Very clear explanations. Good lecturer. Multiple choice exams. Needs to lose that hippy look.
Great lecture and very clear examples. He's quite enthusiastic about what he's teaching and I loved when he jumped on the front lecture table to reach the top chalkboard :)
great teacher. fair. nice guy with an all right look.
great teacher, i wish all my teachers were like peter. very caring about the classes understanding of material, lots of good examples, enthusiastic. knows his stuff. had him for math 111, math 241, and soon math 245.
Peter will do many examples. He will cover all material. His pace is good so you don't get bored. Take notes, listen for understanding, and definately visit him during office hours for any questions you might have so that you keep up. Kudos Peter.
Gives good examples. Explains things clearly. Great Professor.

Good overall, very understanding
He covers material as if doing it for the first time to help us understand how to approach them. The material was pretty tough, but he made it easy for me at least. I also had him for MTH 245.
Very good teacher. Looks like Jesus.
Cares a lot about the students
Can we please get a little bit of professionality around here? Why does he need to ride his ten-speed into class every morning?
He is so boring, and very unorganized sometimes.
Took 111 & 112 from him, and is still the best math teacher I had in college (taken 5+ teachers). Teaches math well and takes time outside of class as needed.
This guy is Crazy! I took math 241 from him and on our first test the class average was a D. The next day in lecture he went ballistic and yelled at us. not only that he said we were dumb. He treats you like a kid. Bad bad
I attended only a few classes, but I can say he cares for the students. He gives good notes and examples, plus the homework assigned is relevant to the course. It was an easy A
Great teacher, moves through the material quickly but is easy to follow. Cares about the students and helps as much as needed. First Midterm grades were way low but he compensated with an easy final.
Seems nice.. kinda crazy though. He had to chase a spider off the overhead during the first week of class. I haven't gone to class much and I'm not into going to the MLC as early as he is there.. otherwise, I might have a chance at a semi-good grade
I have to say that Prof. Argyres is a very intelligent man, knows the subject incredibly well, teaches wonderfully, but his tests are extremely difficult and strenuous. I did not do well in the class, but he is very good at what he does.
He makes a tough subject easy. His examples were so thorough I didn't have any questions after each lecture. Best teacher you can get on this subject.
Very easy class, good professor.
Explains the topics very well, very easy class
His explanations are clear, concise, and easy to follow. He was always very helpful. I don't feel confident in my math skills, but I got an A in his class. Try to get this guy (esp. if the choice is between him and Gyde)!!!
I dont like his teaching style at all. He tries to be funny and the class laughs at his jokes out of pitty.
awesome teacher. try your hardest to get him, he may be kind of lame but at least he's not hard/boring and he's always clear. he DOES look like Jesus,
One of the best math teachers i ever had. explains the topics very well, and very organized, keeps updating the calendar when we are behind.
Although I probably will be getting a B in this class...I slept through it a lot...but when I was awake he was loud and clear...I like when he yells all together on the notes because then I wake up.

Good instructor. Makes sure everyone is on the same page while lecturing and answers questions. Also impressed me by addressing complaints about my TA who wouldnt let us have out hw while we went over it. Recommended.
Great professor, Lectures were well written out was always on top during lecture. Very to take notes highly recommend if you have a chance to take Argyres that you do.
Explains things very well. Adds a lot of humor to his lectures.
Great guy, clear, patient. Try your best to get him.
GET THIS GUY! Explains things INCREDIBLY well, and makes sure everyone is caught up/understands what he is talking about. Best math teacher I've had so far.. Usually I get stuck with people like Scarborough or Camp. Once more: Get Argyres if you can!
I took him for 112 too. Easy to understand and clear instruction. I slacked in both math classes but pulled an A in 241 and a B in 112. Don't worry, do your homework, do decent on tests and then score the EC he always gives in lecture duringthelastweek
Mid Terms and Finals are IMPOSSIBLE
souper easy to understand. very good at explaining materia.
What an awesome math teacher. Very clear and understanding. One of the BEST math explainers in OSU. This guy is really good -- get him at all possible costs. He will explain the material thoroughly and has a very enthuastic respected approach. Everyone in the class likes him.
Good communication
I had him for math 112 which want bad but for 252 hes the worst teacher. On the first 2 tests the average was a 43%. we had 75 F's and 24 D's out of 104 students. My gpa is going to take a huge hit.
Midterms are impossible! 1st midterm more than half the students failed, 2nd midterm there was about 25 passing grades (D or higher) aka BS
Lectures can get pretty tedious. He is a great guy and teaches math very very very simply. Tests are not bad at all! They are exactly like the homework problems and examples that he gives.
Great lectures I thought that he made the calculus a lot simpler and easier to understand. Did well in a large classroom setting. Made class seem a lot smaller.
i just have to say one thing.. the worst teacher ever
No Comments
Just one thing to say,, Thx for destroying my Gpa. O ya Thanks again
Worst teacher ever! Didn't explain anything at all, tests were like nothing he said....DON"T GET THIS TEACHER
I took pre calc in high school so i thought this would be cake. and it was except for the midterms and final they kicked my ass soooo bad...
Agree with the bad teacher comment. Terrible class, I hated it.

hard ass tests. highest grade on final was b and there was only one of them. i believe average for final was around 30 or 40 percent
Great prof

Just the worst teacher ever, i dont know how so many people like him. I think i was in the guys class below where the final average was 30-40% The midterms averaged at 51 and 54%. I dont know how good of a teacher that is but that class i was in was redi
Good class.
Asked unfair questions on the final and then was blatently discourteous about the competence of previous term's students to the (at the time) current term's students. Often spent whole lectures "explaining" a subject only to realize he was doing it incorrectly just at the end of class.
he seems like a good teachers, although i've never specifically ask a question, i think he would have no problem explaining something to you that you dont understand. explains ex. problems good, but needs to do more like the ones in our hw and on tests
He's a pretty good teacher, and I feel that he thoroughly explains things. Yeah, his tests are difficult, but hey, that's how they're supposed to be. My advice: Pay close attention to the word problems. Also, he absolutley HATES it when people keep talking in his class. It's pretty funny how he lashes out at them, and I don't blame him. Pretty good guy overall.

Great proff, explains well and clearly, and writes good notes on the board. he assumes you have a working knowledge of everything up to his class. avalible during office hours to help. i reccomend this guy!
First midtearm is the most difficult.
Good teacher that is pretty straight forward. Tests are somewhat hard but not unfair. Very helpful during his office hours.
Decent tests, great test reviews, very clear and awesome lectures.
The problems on the tests are a lot different and more difficult than any problem that was seen in a homework assignment or in reviews. Make sure to study and understand the word problems, and Do your homework. If you get bad test grades, your overall grade can still be saved if you do it.
He makes sure that his students understand what is going on before continuing on to the next section. Good teacher.
Don't take this class in the morning. It's so hard to learn all the information when you're tired. Peter is a really good instructer. He's very good at teaching many different learning styles and he's very willing to help. If you're like me and don't have to take this class for your major, then S/U it for sure. It's hard because there's so much inf
I believe there is no problem with asking for an extention but when I asked he was incredibly rude and was disrespectful. Assigns tons of homework problems but when it comes time to take the test they are completely DIFFERENT!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND for Math 111.
I really liked his lecturing style though many times he could be very condecending when you asked him a question. He is usually quicked pased so if you get lost ask a TA or go to the help center.
Claims to challenge students so not to "fail" in Math 112 that follows. Has lots of examples and homework problems. Tests can be manipulative because of answers that are extremely similar. Be careful of mathematical errors and don't rush through it which leads to stupid mistakes!
This teachers fault: he doesn't cover variations. He reviews base problems any monkey with a calculator could solve. Therefore you are screwed when you attempt harder problems. Tests appear easy, but actually weed out students who make small mistakes but get the overall concept. Unfair if you ask me but I guess they deserve to suffer for it.
except for teaching at a very fast pace, he makes sure you know what you are doing before you move on
I thought he was a cool teacher..His lectures are clear and understandable..i recommend this teacher better than hake..
The guy likes to jump while erasing the board. It's the most entertainment you'll get from his lectures. ^_^ The class was fairly easy as long as you study and do the work. He goes by his notes really fast! A lot of people seem to fail on his tests, but I found them to be quite easy as long as you know your material from your previous math classes.
terribly bad teacher goes over simple problems all week in class and on hw assignments, then turns around and throw a some kind of rocket science on the tests, completely inconsistant
Good teacher easy to understand. Really tries to help the students
He's very CLEAR as he goes through example problems - for example, he rarely assumes we know some of those complicated properties that we're supposed to have learned in previous courses. He'll repeat how to do them in the problem - VERY HELPFUL.
He was a great calculus teacher, the tests are hard, but just do all the practice tests he gives you and you will do fine. He'll go over problems again if you have questions. Very clear when it comes to teaching. Consice
Overall he's a great math teacher, better than any one I had in high school. He teaches things very clearly and is usually pretty patient with his classes. His tests can be hard, but as long as you take notes and study them, you should do well. Even if he only covered something in class once (hint hint word problems), expect it to be on the test.
He is such a hard teacher. All the people who say he is really good have already taken a Calculus course, either in high school or college. On the first midterm, the average was a 62. "That's about right, I won't be curving" $%^&#%^!! Over 50 people didn't even take the final. Didn't affect the curve at all because it appears he didn't curve!
The tests are very hard. Just be sure to study for at least 8 hours before any midterm or final. Although he has hard tests he is very helpful and easy to approach for help. I was always able to go to him during office hours. Use these office hours and the math learning center.
He explains the material very well and you will understand everything he's talking about in class. Except, the tests are extremely hard! The test questions are nothing like the "practice tests" he gives you before hand. Be prepared for a lot of studying or settle for a 50% on the tests! The midterms are multiple choice, 20 Q's and can be tricky!
A hard teacher. Goes very fast and spends as little time as possible explaining material. Exams, compared to homework asignments are much more difficult.
First off he explains things very clearly especially some of the tough concepts in this class. He's the best MATH teacher I've ever had. Yes, the tests are hard. They are hard because he really wants to make sure you know what you are doing. If you don't understand the material, then you shouldn't pass the class. Study, go to lecture, and you will!
he is good
His teaching skills are adequate, but his personality is difficult to deal with. Don't let him know you are in the military, because you will get unfairly labeled. I tried to reschedule a test for a mandatory training exercise and he was unwilling to compromise until he learned of the Soldiers and Sailors Act. Take the class from a different pro
Mr. Argyres is a very good Calculus teacher. He is very detailed and concise, and he is determined to help you learn the subject. His tests are moderately hard, but as long as you study and ask questions you should do good. Try as hard as you can do get Peter Argyres for MTH 251.
Excellent teacher. He is very good at his job and his notes are crystal clear. Somewhat harder than the other teachers. I hated the structure of the whole course though, but I guess the math department is to blame for that.
It was a difficult class, but as long as you go to class, take good notes and study you should do fine. Make sure you take his practice exams, they helped so much! And write down specific examples on your note card! Just write really small. If you do these things you should at least pass :)
I think he's a great teacher! Others are saying that his tests are hard & that they aren't what was covered in lecture, but I found our first midterm to be very easy. We covered everything on it in class..if you are motivated to do well, I highly reccommend him!
This teacher gets a bad rap. However, I am positive that if you go to class you will get at least a B. He's exceptionally clear and very thorough. Tests are multiple choice and are moderately difficult, but there are no surprises. Go to class = A. "Together on the notes?"
At first I thought he didn't have much of a sense of humor. Later you find out that he's not that bad. He answers questions very well and gives a lot of examples. Sometimes the homework questions seem a little harder than the examples given in lecture. If you attend the lectures and do the homework, you should be fine during the midterms.
He teaches the material very well. However, you really have to do the homework to understand the material and do well in the class.
Although he teaches the class with some clarity it seems like he doesn't want to be there and wishes he didn't have to keep teaching 111 over and over again. But if I have to choose between him and another math prof who doesn't even allow calculators (some lady), I would go with him. Don't let the first day of class get you down!
I thought he was pretty good. Attendance is really important. Go to class and write down his examples, and you should be good. The homework is usually harder than the test material. If you find him during his office hours, he's more than willing to help you out.
He was really good at keeping things moving in lecture, and does a good job explaining things.
The class is not an easy one, his teaching style is good tho.
HORRIBLE! Congrats, to the students who can listen to him babble for an hour and get what he is talking about then go to a recitation and not learn a damn thing because the labs are poorly written and the TA's seem to have a problem taking control of their small classroom. 0-60 is his average scores on tests.
"all together on the notes?"
All together? Okay!
Terrible! I learned absolutely nothing. He solves problems in the longest ways when you can really solve them in the simplest forms. Even the TA's didn't know how he solves his problems!
He has one guideline to success, attend class. He is the best math teacher I have ever had, he had online printable notes for following along and does quite a few examples. The only thing I have problems with is the book, some problems may have to be skipped, but he has office hours all the time and loves to help.(had him for 111 too, same thing)
Makes things clear and knows the best techniques for teaching math.
Simply, if you want to do good in this class and bad in the other class take him. This is the worst professor ever. I had him in math 111 and was barely able to pass with an S grade. His lectures and homework and exams are very different. If have to take his class you need to find practice tests otherwise you will do bad because if you have the pre
After every 5 minute you will hear, All together on the note? okay. No one says "yes" and he still says okay. LOOOL
Lecture and notes were very clear and easy to understand, which was surprising for an early morning class. Midterms were not too bad, but by no power of his own the finals are almost always at 7:30 in the morning, often resulting in a much lower class average for that test. Drops a low midterm and counts the final twice if it benefits your grade.
GREAT TEACHER everything is laid out plain and simple ready for you to understand. He helps you with notes by writing partial lecture notes FOR YOU, so that you don't get those nasty hand cramps. If you EVER get a chance to take a math course with Peter...DO IT!!! He is one of the best math teachers I have ever had, period.
The best at helping and teaching. You have to go to class and he makes notes for you to print and bring to class to fill out. Very understanding to needs and usually has lots of office hours. Will grade homework and tests hard because he goes through everything. When you're done with his class, you'll know the material if you gave the effort.
All around good teacher. The only problem I ever had with him was some of the assigned problems being unclear, but that is the fault of the textbook (which sucks btw). He's helpful and willing to give extensions at the end of the term when finals and papers are piling up on you.
Excellent!Awesome notes. Great Professor.Don't take the homework assignment too lightly though. Overall not too hard a class.
Hardest class I have ever taken.
I thought he was a cool guy. He's good at math, which usually means "cannot communicate with humans," but he did well by me. The text was garbage though.
Always getting upset at people. Seems like he is on his last nerve all the time.
I think Peter is a great instructor. I was dreading taking the class, but Peter explains things in such a way that I rarely had problems with any problems! It is very important you do the homework though! Mathematics is just like learning an instrument. Practice makes perfect and doing the homework helps you practice and get good if not perfect!
Not helpful, very rude
You don't get docked points for not going to lecture, but taking notes in class is much easier than figuring it out on your own using the book.
Notes in class are esay to understand but homework is hard, he assigns alot of problems too. Two midterms and a final, plus recitation to turn hw in and do a lab (which are pointless). I would not recommend him.
really good at explaining everything. hes the best math teacher i have ever had and although the homework may have been kinda hard at times, the class overall wasn't bad. the two midterms are pretty easy but the final is a little bit harder
Very heard to understand at some points, moves too fast for most of the class to understand.
Yeah, many people fail this course so be wary. If you do your homework every week and review before your test, you should pass. The course is very cut and dry so you know exactly what you need to do. He is a clear teacher, slightly boring but better than other 111 teachers. Take advantage of the study tables offered by the university, helps a lot!
Bottom line is that Peter Argyres is a pretty good Calculus teacher. He knows what he is talking about and is always willing to help students understand the material. HOWEVER, his tests are ridiculously hard. He blows other math teachers at OSU out of the water. If you pay attention and study, there is no reason you cant get an A.
Sometimes difficult to keep up in notes. He rushes to cover everything each class making an environment not welcoming to questions. Also, make sure you bring an interpreter with you to recitation or you won't get anything out of it except a headache.
He knows what he is talking about and is ther better teacher i have had. he explains well and its clear what the studnets responsiblity is.
Took his class for math 111 and got an A, he is willing to explain things to you if you dont understand. good teacher
Very good teacher, though he expects a lot out of you. You will not be able to coast through his class. He is extremely helpful outside of class, so I highly recommend making tons of appointments with him to get help. He is very patient and will make sure you understand the material. I highly recommend him.
He was a good teacher. he just tells you what you need to know, but it's hard to get clarity without going to him office hours. the rec was a joke and you get graded on just doing the work. must be in class to understand material. you are allowed to have a note card during tests. if you take his later lecture you;ll get out 10 minutes early.
peter goes really really fast through notes, the worst part is the TA's in recitation. they have no idea what they're doing. but if you go to class, and do the homework then you will be fine.
if you struggle with math do not take this teacher. This class was the biggest waste of money ever. the recitations were a total waste of time.
I've seen all the material in the past and figured this class would be a review. Well, I recognize it all now that I'm seeing it again, but I'm not relearning it (and since I forget how to do math easily, that's a necessity for me). This has become my hardes class, which strikes me as ridiculous because in general I'm good at math. Depressing.
I found his lectures to be interesting and he explains the material very well. Go to class if you are lost and the MyMathLab program he uses for the homework is great. The best way to do well on the midterms and final is to do the review questions out of the book and to sign up for a SI table at the library. Good Luck!
Very good teacher. I don't know understand the other responses but his lectures were really straight forward. The notes online are helpful. His test are 20 questions multiple choice so it's very easy to get a low score by missing a few questions. Study the example problems he gives because all test questions are ones that he's gone over in class.
He is very clear and helpful, once you attend the lectures and study the review before the tests you will get an A
Challenging course but this isn't the instructor's fault. He's a great teacher, gives clear explanations and provides printable notes before each class. Attendance is a must if you want a good grade. He is very nice and helpful, always willing to provide extra help outside of class. Review sessions basically tell you what is on exams. Small curve.
At the beginning of the course, I thought he was great. He took thorough notes for us to follow, I was doing fine on the homework. But then the first midterm happened, and almost every person failed. The Rec. class is also pointless and unrelated to the classwork, as is the tests as well! I do not recommend taking this class with him.
Very clear and organized. I went into office hours once for homework help and once before the final, both times he was incredibly helpful and eager to teach. Go to lecture because that is the only way the material will make sense, overall a great guy.
The prof is amazing, he might look unapproachable at first but when you visit him during office hours he is very very helpful. I would honestly take him for future classes.
I took MTH 111, 3 times before with another professor and I failed. I took it once with this great professor and I passed. HE is really great with considering what you have to say and accepts a lot of things. He is the best math teacher I ever attended.
Don't ever think of taking a course with this teacher. He only cares about finishing the material before the time of class is over, rather than making sure that all students are understanding. I went to the class, and I knew that I won't understand anything. Also, he takes attendance, and gives many homeworks for the MYMATHLAB.
One of the (if not the best) math professors I've had at OSU. Utilize his office hours! Does give a skills quiz, but it's easy if you study. Go to recitation; those points add up at the end of the term. Study the two midterms and you'll be very prepared for his final exam. Very nice and smart guy; I HIGHLY recommend him.
I took MTH 111 with Pargy last fall (2013). He's got a pretty good sense of humor and sometimes tells stories about when he was in a band. He can be a little impatient when he's trying to explain something one-on-one to you, so try your best to really give the material a shot before you ask. Lectures are a bit fast but overall he's a good prof.
Peter was a very solid teacher. Lectures are very clear. He is extremely approachable and willing to help. Recs are dumb. TA was pretty terrible. If you want an A, be prepared to put in a lot of extra outside time into practicing the concepts. Don't just wait to cram everything on your notecard. Overall one of the best math teachers I've ever had.
Peter is very willing to help, and he is also willing to extend the deadline on homework if you request it. Initially, I felt that he explained the material very clearly, but as the term continued, he did become a little bit more confusing for a lot of people due to the fact he was speeding through 2+ sections per lecture due to the lack of time.
Professor Peter Willard-Argyres is a funny dude, uploads detailed (and colorful!) notes within the week of the lecture they belonged to. Homework assignments were short and reasonable, and I found that the tests were easier than the homework and recitation materials.
Very fast classes, recitations don't correlate to the lecture what so ever and the "practice exam" he offers did't translate to the real exam at all. Even the tutors I went to were confused why he was teaching the way he was...
One of the most helpful professors at Oregon State, especially for students with disabilities. While he might have hard tests he will go out of his way to help you if you show effort in his class. I have taken a number of his math courses and the lectures are always clear and effective. Has a decent sense of humor and tries to make class engaging.
Everything goes by very quickly. It's hard to keep up because the poor guy has to fit so much material into one term.
You will hear Math 111 is the most failed on campus, and that is true! However, Peter is one of the best teachers to have. His teaching style is quite different than others. He expects you to know a lot before hand, but if you don't, he would be there to answer questions. He gives extra credit but don't just bank on that.
Peter is phenomenal. Lectures are engaging and he's very supportive of all questions and always tells you "good question" even if it wasn't. Peter worked with me after I failed his first midterm and helped me pass with a solid B. Would highly recommend. Don't listen to the negative comments out there, try him out for yourself. He is really helpful.
Peter is really awesome as a math teacher. I usually got a B or C for my math class but with him I got an A. as long as you're attending every class and go to recitation, you will be completely fine. Also, pay a close attention to every paper he goes through class and recitation, also the exam review because most of the exam question are on that.
Peter is very chill and makes expectations clear. Quizzes are pretty easy and the midterm was a cake walk. Huge amount of notes allowed and walks through problems in class.
Peter is overall a decent professor. Math is not my strong suit at all but he did a pretty thorough job of going through the material. The quizzes are a lot easier than the homework and labs. There was no point in going to lecture because the class is flipped. Midterm and final are worth 45% of your grade which is unfair for bad test takers.
I normally find math to be easy, but the way Canvas was set up by this professor didn't suit my learning style. It all felt very hectic. There's a lot to learn and do in so little time. The labs and videos didn't seem to help towards the exams and quizzes. The homework was easy and helped towards studying for quizzes. Easy grader, though.
Gives copious amounts of homework and moves very fast in person. The only chance you have of passing calc is online (through him at least). I normally do the weeks homework in 4-5 hours in one day. This week we had 163 problems total, I actually went through and counted. Most homework assignments have multiple parts per problem.
This professor is the worst professor I have had for any math class that I have ever taken. He is difficult to work with, he is always on a power trip, has a superiority complex, and speaks with rude tones to all students. He phrases questions in a way made to make the student seem/feel incompetent. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
Overall Peter is a very nice guy, he didn't give us a midterm and we have no test. Just weekly quizzes and he drops the lowest quiz score at the end of the term. Math isn't my strong suit but this class wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be. You just have to watch the videos and take notes on your own time.
I personally thought he was a great professor. Make sure to pay attention to the lectures and example problems. Don't be afraid to ask questions during the lectures because he will always answer them. The lab assignments were the most difficult and were harder than most of the tests. Decent amount of hw, never super complicated, just repetitive.
Peter is a great professor. He breaks down content into digestible chunks and if you're not especially bright with math (which I am not) the online pre-class lectures are VERY helpful. He even has optional algebra review material and great study material for the final exam. I felt like Peter truly wanted everyone, including me, to pass.
I was a little intimidated by Peter on the first day as he "laid down the law" about class expectations, but I later came to see him as a compassionate, kind professor who is happy to help and very accessible outside of class. I would recommend making sure to study the material before each class, as he goes over practice problems in class.
Professor Willard-Argyres sets clear expectations and provides great support, even for struggling students. The workload is manageable with regular study and unstuck ai can be a helpful supplement to the course materials.
Went to class maybe three times the whole term, had a 97% the whole time and passed with a B because I only did half of the final. Learned mostly from canvas resources he posts everything! Online hw and in person quizzes(though TAs were on strike my term so those were online too!)
