Good teacher, and nice guy. DO NOT talk while he lectures or he'll shout at you
I can't believe it's a 300 level course.
I HAVE 5 MORE MINUTES AND I INTEND TO USE IT!!!
Don't respect students. Rude & Unpredictible
easy assignment and lectures but hard exams. He used to be a nice guy but not now
I agree that his assignments are easy but long, and the midterms and final are hard.
Hard. That's what I can say.
Impossible mid-term.

i agree that the assignments are easy but his mid-term and final are hard and quite different from his notes, assignment. u have to fully understand what he is talking about in lecture. don't take his course unless u are a clever and hard working student.

This guy is simply brutal. His altitude towards students is as bad as you can get. Don't take his class
Easy course, but this guy made it so boring! His accent was sometimes difficult to understand.
bad attitude towards students. his exams are okay
he's big. very nice person, but simple things make him pissed off in class. very smart.
Hard, then I have nothing to say.
This guy kicks A$$! He one of the best profs I have. Awesome accent, and good lectures. I was never bored in his class. Tests are hard, but thats good because everybody fails and makes your makes look good.
The perfect formula for an A+ in this class is this: go to class + and understand HW + memorize all proofs (~10). Nothing out of the ordinary appears in his tests. But you'll need a good TA otherwise no one's gonna help you.
This guy has a poor attitude towards students... he doesn't care about you at all. And his teaching is sucks!
One of the hardest (workload) classes i ever took. Its assignments are LONG, every two weeks 15 hours of work.. He teaches quite good, his problem is that he is so big that you can't see the blackboard when he explains. If you have time to really understand what you study and not to only do assignments you can easily take A+.He is not so unpleasant
definitely talented guy,but poor attitude
Petr amuses me to no end with his crazy analogies. The class is difficult, but he makes learning calculus funny. We need to "kill the two" and there are "upstairs and downstairs" to rational functions. Sometimes, you just have to "massage" the function to get what you need to work with, even if it is a "compost" function. Oh those crazy Russians.
Considering how hard the material was, he did a really good job explaining. His exams are really fair. He's a really nice guy, and his jokes aren't bad.
Has neat organized notes
he's a little boring at times but hey, it's math. he's an alright guy. nice mostly legible notes on webct. no real surprises on exams
Overall a good prof especially for 1st yrs as he speaks very slowly and emphasizes important concepts very well. Tests are fair and lectures are valuable. Although he isn't I thought he looked kinda mean. I like his accent =)
He has very clear notes which are easy to understand. He spends time on difficult concepts and slows down so everyone understands. Has a Russian or German accent but it's easy to understand him. He closely mirrors his practice exams. Exams are difficult but very fair. Exam questions are from lectures. GO TO HIS LECTURES!
Explains difficult concepts throughly and does quite a bit of examples in class which helps in understanding the material. Midterms and finals are similar to the practice ones, he gives some tricky questions but overall the exams are fair.
He teaches well and explaines concepts. I know that becaus e I am not a bright student and I still got an A. Not that he gives out A's for free, but with him, I actually understood the concept of Math!
Seriously, this guy scares me. He pretty much bellowed at everyone during the midterm where to sit. He's alright in class if he follows his notes. A word of advice, don't try to use your brain.I found a simple way to solve some very hard problems, and justified my reasoning. I got 0.I inquired, and he was VERY unreasonable and wouldn't listen to me
This professor has to be one of the worst profs i have EVER taken. just by looking at him he seems scary and rude even though not too much. Sometimes makes things harder than they need to be. this course is easy but he made is hard as hell. His exams are brutal and unfair; avoid taking him. you don't wanna get a bad grade on an easy course!
Despite his thick accent and his weird use of english phrases, the lectures we're actually quite clear. But he will shine the spotlight on you every now and then. Overall, this is a pretty easy course, but his exams are much harder than they need be and rely on small things he mentioned in passing during lecture.
A fairly okay teacher. His english though is sometimes hilarious. He doesn't like it when people talk to loud. His exams are fairly decent if you have studied.
Some questions on his final were fair, others were far too complex for the amount of points they were worth. Midterms weren't bad though, but like I said..the final killed
At first he seemed intimidating and then as you get to know him, you can tell he really wants his students to learn. You will get used to his accent in no time, and his notes are crystal clear like a text book. The exams were all hard, but fair.
He's a good teacher and makes himself available during two office hours/week (not many people went to them). The midterms weren't difficult if you did the homework (homework is out of the textbook so you don't need to buy it if you can get a reserves copy). Final was harder than I expected; it was all the hard questions from lecture and homework.
Great prof, explained concepts clearly, although his accent was a little bit difficult to understand at first if you get over it you can learn a lot from him. He might seem scary but very nice and helpful. Exams were mostly based of lectures and his examples. Fairly ok exams.
I thought it was boring class in the begining of semester but I got better. Midterms are easy if you study(or just do your homework by yourself) but final exams are hard. This prof hated chatting during the class..
The first few lectures were a bit boring. However, as the class progressed they got alot better. The midterms were VERY fair. I found the final exam challenging but also fair as most of the questions had been discussed in class, in the examples in the book, or were on an old exams available on web ct.
Despite what others have complained about, he's a great prof. and this is coming from someone that HATES math! His accent does take some getting used to though, but his explainations are clear and concise. I found the final more easy than the two midterms oddly enough.
lectures were painfully boring, midterms were EASY (just study past midterms), the final was more difficult. even if you don't pay attention in class, make sure you write down his examples. and his accent is awesome.
He's super nice and very helpful during office hours/in the workshop. Midterms were a lot more fair and averages were pretty high compared to 154. I found his final easier than the practice ones. Even if math isn't your thing its still possible to do well just stay on top of homework
He's a really great prof and super nice and helpful during office hours. His accent may be a little thick but totally understandable and makes going to lecture all that much more interesting. If you just print out his notes and attend lecture you'll do just fine.
Really enjoyed his class. For a proof-heavy class, he made all the concepts easy to understand and all proofs flowed logically and easily. A slight accent, but still understandable. Seems intimidating when questions are asked during lecture, but is a very nice guy in his office hours. Tests are relatively easy, but fair. Overall, Excellent prof.
Lectures are well presented with the occasional ad lib joke. Proofs are detailed and mistakes in the book are pointed out. Assignments are tough, but solutions (after) are clear and logical. His exam prep sessions are helpful, and the exams themselves are fair and heavily based on the textbook. Marking can be austere, but that affects everyone.
Easiest course I have taken.
Took this class for the second time, first midterm was hard, second was super easy, final was fair, you need to know the basics of everything.
He is a really good prof! I don't know why he has so much hate. He describes things very well and his midterms are easy. The final of course is a bit more work. I ended up with a B+ in this class so I do recommend taking math with him.
Not a bad professor. He always makes sure to go over enough examples that you understand the concepts and is always open to questions. Midterms and the final weren't easy, but were very fair if you know and understand the concepts. Would definitely recommend taking a course with him.
I was scared at first because of all the bad ratings but once you get over his accent, he's actually a good prof. Always helpful, tells you as it is. The midterms are just example questions in class, but beware of the final! WAY harder than the midterms. Ace midterms & assignments so you're not depending on the final to pass the course.
I really liked him. His notes were good and he was very nice. First midterm was pretty hard, but the second midterm and final were better. I recommend him.
If you want an easy ride, then this prof is not for you. But, if you want to learn and get a fair grade, he is THE prof to go to. His grading scheme is really fair. You get a grade that reflects your undersanding of the material
Petr can come across as gruff, and you better not talk in class, but this guy is great. Very helpful, very clear, cares about helping his students. Especially nice with one on one questions. Class requires lots of work, weekly assignments, but he makes it bearable. The first math prof I had who provided bio examples in a bio based math class
Interesting material, and gave good lectures.
He's a good prof... Really funny, even though he's not trying to be. His exams aren't easy, but they are fair.
The first midterm is easy and the second one is brutal. The class itself isn't easy especially if you're not good at math. Your mark will reflect your understanding of the material. His tests are fair if you know what you're doing.
Bad attitude. You wont get much help from him. If your TA doesn't have office hour either, you are screwed.
Petr overcomplicates simple topics and has a very fast-paced teaching style. However, his exams are very straight forward and easy. If you study off his note examples and do textbook questions this class will turn out to be an easy A.
Midterms were based on in class examples so its useful to go to class. His teaching is not very clear though, I learnt mostly through the examples, textbook, and youtube videos. He is however very helpful during office hours. Do the practice midtermsfinals and textbook questions and you'll be fine.
1. Notes and examples posted online but you MUST attend class to obtain the answers from those examples 2. He doesn't let you talk and eat in class. He may CATCH you, so I advise you to sit at the back to do this if you MUST 3. Really HARD course overall, especially if you're NOT good in math 4. REVIEW regularly & ask for HELP to SUCCEED!
Dr. Lisonek is a great teacher. All you need to do to pass his exams and weekly quizzes is to attend class every time, do SOME of the homework, and go over his notes. Try to do your best on the midterms, so that you have less pressure doing the final exam. I really don't understand why people say this is a hard class, because it's not.
The lectures are quite rushed as there is so much material to be covered in this course. He provides detailed examples and emphasizes on important concepts. The midterms are fairly straight-forward, if you go over all the examples in the lecture notes and keep up with the weekly homework assignments. The final exam was a lot tougher.
There is a lot to cover in just 3 months, however, prof lisonek does a really nice job explaining the concepts. Weekly quizzes are basically freebies if you do the HW since the Q's are taken straight from there. Midterms, as well as the final exam was fair. As long as you do the HW and know your material, you should be good to go!
Petr is pretty boring to listen to. He can be patronizing and socially awkward. But he does cover the material pretty well and his examples mostly make sense. Exams are fair. Theres a lot of material covered in the semester, but its not a hard class if you put the time and effort into the homework every week.
Lisonek's teaching ability is pretty standard, but the real money is in the class examples he uses in his lecture notes; variations of these examples always manage to find their way onto his exams. Exams are fair if you study, do the homework, come prepared for quizzes. Practice practice practice. Algebra is key.
Petr was a really good prof. He uses a lot of examples during lectures which is amazing and so useful for exams. I only had him for half the semester but I wish I had him for the entire thing. Assigned textbook questions are good to follow before exams and the questions on the exams were very fair if you went over lecture and text examples.
One of the most intelligent and kindest professors in sfu. Was patient with me in the ACW for extra help and made sure i understand the material. He left us mid semester on sick leave and i honestly miss his teaching style. Hope he makes a speedy recovery.
Can come off as mean or rude, not that friendly when you ask questions. Very good examples in class and variations of them show up on exams. Study his examples and you will do well, along with the true false questions from the practice midterms online from the math department.
He goes over many examples in lectures (he may go through it fast, but the pace was fine for me). He is a nice teacher and he encourages questions in/out of lec. Midterm was fair; just practice as much as you can (lec notes, IQ, CN, maybe OQ but meh) & understand concepts since that's generally how you can do well in calc
Must attend his lectures to get the notes, doesn't post filled notes, which is understandable. Has an accent. You need to yell loudly for him to hear your question (seriously!), he does NOT try to ignore students,he just can't hear well sometimes. Good prof, and fair, and he reminded the students of the available past exams on SFU's official website.
Had Dr. Lisonek for only half a semester because of a sick leave. It was very unfortunate because I really liked how he gave a lot of examples in his notes. Attend lectures as the notes aren't posted anywhere. His exams were fair if you do the course notes and other homework! His accent is very amusing!
He left us halfway through the semester and I didn't think I would miss his teaching style but boy did I ever. He does lots and lots of examples which is awesome, but you definitely have to go to lecture to get the notes. His notes are clear and well done. He has an accent, but it does not detract from learning and can be kind of funny sometimes.
Horrible grading criteria. His lectures were incredibly dull and he read directly off of them. Assignments were written poorly and were confusing to understand. He did not clearly define what the grading criteria was. Avoid being taught by him if you can
It was very hard to understand what he was saying most of the time because he had a strong accent and would keep breathing into the mic. Overall wasn't too bad but gave us 2 assignments a week.
His constant grunting, breathing, and moaning into the mic made me so mad. I didnt know it was possible to be that mad at 8:45am. Rude when you ask him questions. I learned more about the subjects from Khan Academy than I ever did from his lectures, all I ever took away from lectures was anger at his god forsaken mouth noises.
Basically taught myself everything l, you should go to lectures because it is somewhat helpful but I could hardly understand him because of his accent unfortunately
Petr's teaching is very straight forward. His exams are very similar to the assignment questions & lecture examples. If you can understand the concepts and apply them, it's an easy A. Make sure you do & hand in your assignments ON TIME!! He has hearing problems so just shout out any questions. & don't be afraid to go to the ACW for help.
alright first of all his grunting and constant moaning already makes me want to leave. on top of the sounds he makes hes always saying uMMM in his lectures making whatever hes teaching confusing :( glad i took APcal
He's not that bad but not that great either. Lectures are not mandatory since he posts notes online but going would be good in my opinion. His notes are straightforward but he's always breathing into the mic. Sometimes its hard to hear what he is saying. The midterms were fair but the final was a lot lot different so you should study hard for that.
His class is very straight foward, anything that isn't taught won't be on the exam.
He was kinda rude, but he was an OK prof. He was VERY organized. tests were ok, not too easy not too hard. A LOT OF homework.
I am pretty sure I attended office hours every single week and he was always so so helpful and kind. His lectures can make me a little bit sleepy sometimes because he tends to repeat things often and say "um". That is probably the only negative I could say about him though. His assignments are fair and he does a great job of explaining. Very caring
Can be rude at times, but he is an okay prof. Lectures were kinf of boring and makes you want to fall asleep. LOTS of homework. Difficult homework. Apart from that, he's alright. Grading can be a bit tough but I'm doing pretty well. Overall, he's an okay prof
Petr's notes were helpful, and ultimately factored to my success in the class; however, I would not say that he's great at teaching them. He would not be super clear with why certain things worked/did not work. He also came off as rude on occasions, which may have not been intended, but was still apparent. Not bad, but definitely not great either.
The course was short due to being only 2 credit course, but I loved the last topics in last weeks introduced to us, in week 8-12. Thanks professor
Lectures can be pretty unclear, and assignments do not have a clear grading criteria before marking, but they are doable and the final is pretty fair. This class can also be used to your advantage when taking 316 in the same or future semester for computing assignments.
Petr is a really good prof! This course is quite enjoyable, and the weekly assignments (10) are fair and based on the tutorials and lectures. I found Petr's lecturing style to be somewhat dry at times, but he comes across as a nice guy who cares about his students. Overall, I would recommend this course for learning Matlab!
as a lecturer hes pretty dry and boring mostly just reads off the slides, however assignments are fair and I wouldn't say hes a good prof but I also wouldn't say he's bad, just average. I would say the marking is a little unclear on the assignments
Not the most engaging teacher, but he knows his stuff and I found him more helpful one on one. Personally, lectures weren't super helpful, but assignments and their grading were very fair. He's a nice guy and definitely not a bad prof, just a bit dry.
Lectures are pretty useless, as he essentially just reads off the slides - but the assignments are quite fun and interesting, and the concepts are pretty cool - but I would say that he doesn't really teach. Fun class, dry presentation.
His lectures are extremely boring. However, the assignments are a lot of fun and the course content itself is interesting. I have mixed feelings, but overall I'd still recommend him
Chill course, professor is a little boring but I can see the effort, the assignments are a lot of fun and not overly hard. Gives a good intro to MATLAB and surveys some UD math topics
This was probably one of my favorite courses at SFU in terms of content and assignments. Each week was a new topic, all very cool stuff, and the assignments were just an application of that week's topic. Petr is a little boring with lecturing, but he's very supportive, gives fair assessments, and makes the course accessible.
Yall are glazing him in macm 203. His lectures and labs are boring, as he just reads off of the pdf (which is uploaded on canvas). Attendance doesn't matter. He is sassy when responding to emails. I will give him credit to the assignments, they are fun.
To do well in this class, you need to have a solid understanding of Matlab and math in general. The lectures are interesting, but he does not even fully explain anything, so you're basically self-teaching the whole course. Assignments are very complicated and you have to use outside sources for almost all of them. Avoid him if you can!
If you know basic programming and remember your linear algebra, this course will be a breeze. The assignments are mostly fair, some can be tricky and require some thought, but for the most part they're not hard at all. The labs and lectures are pretty useless though, since he just reads off the material. But content wise, this course is easy
Decent prof for MACM 201. Kinda boring, but delivery is pretty standard and tests are pretty fair I'd say
Good professor overall, no complaints, Macm201 is just a hard course.
It's a fun and straightforward course on matlab
Chill instructor, boring at times. Other than that tests were pretty fair, this is just a tough course.
Came across quite strict and stern with policies, but the class itself wasn't bad. The assignments are fair, and so was the final, as long as you did the assignments honestly without outside help. (He was really strict about this too btw). Overall, not a bad course, pretty foundational for mathematical computing
For a 2 credit course it was the worst course I've taken. I don't think the assignments were a fair reflection of what was taught.
Very bad course. The prof just reads code slides with no real teaching. Final and assignments expect deep understanding without building basics. Total waste of time, tuition, and effort. Not meant for teaching at all. Avoid if you can.
I wouldn't recommend the prof. He just read off the slides. Classes are boring.
really bad prof, not sure what the hiring process was with him. Boring lecturer (reads directly off the slides), assignments theres no clear grading criteria, final was weird and he doesn't teach but expects you to know it all. I thought cryptography was cool as an upper division but saw hes teaching it so sadly have to skip that class
Nothing to say in particular. He is good, but my only complaint that his speaking style was putting me to sleep. I was really unengaged during lectures despite the fact that on some level I could see he is good. Make sure to pay attention tho and put in effort in this course cause for a lot of you this is a very new style of math
Although his lecturing can be dry, Dr Lisonek has an underrated sense of humour that I enjoyed. He knows his stuff and is helpful in office hours. The assignments were pretty fun but do take up a lot of time, so start early. I spent more time on assignments than I expected to for a 2-credit course.
The class itself is easy. Personally, most of the assignments took me only a couple hours each week, but that could be because I come from a programming background. Petr is a decent lecturer, presents material as it is, but I'll admit he's dry and tends to read off slides. But given the low workload, I'd still recommend this class.
a lot of the positive reviews sound like they are written by the same person. The assignments are NOT fun, and are HARD to complete given the materials. This is a 3-4 credit course disguised as a 2. I genuinely struggled with this class more than my other 3 combined.
Prof has difficulty teaching. Prof should consider retiring like yesterdary. Would not recommend unless you're a math genuis. A 2 credit class that feels like a 5 credit course.
Not a useful instructor. It's better to rely on the TAs in workshop instead of the lectures. He is not willing to answer questions in lectures, which makes the thing devolve into a glorified Youtube video, and not a good one at that.
If you're taking this course, be aware that this professor language is not clear enough, and for the question in the I didn't find this professor friendly. Not good at explaining the concepts. Whatever you write in your exams, he is not going to give you the score for incomplete answers. I don't why still we have this kind of professors.
Not a great prof, but definitely not the worst. His lectures are very dry and have low attendance, but honestly attending them did help. His assignments give good practice for the exams. This class is tough but doable if you are consistent.
It feels like he's forced to teach, follows EXACTLY jamie's notes which is AMAZING but he makes it NOT so amazing, no explanations, just filling out notes. He genuinely hates being present in class, idk how else to describe it. He also thinks everyone show up to cheat on his tests/quizzes. Homework is good to prepare for quiz/midterms. pls retire.
This class was a disaster. He does not know how to teach. We had a lab every week, but we didn't even use the computers, he just made us sit in front of them and listen to him try to teach. People stopped going to class. I went to one class where it was only me and two other students. The lectures were useless, and I didn't learn anything.
It's definitely a terrible prof, his test is not very hard i'd have to say. But the homework is hard, you can't find answers online. Work shop is mannatory for this course. Class is hard to understand and boring. Can't understand his notes, especially when you try to refresh your memories using his notes. Regret taking with him.
Dr. Lisonek does all his lecture notes based off Jamie Mullholland's videos but somehow explains it worse. When someone raises their hand up for help, he won't ask them what the problem is. Probability of asking for actual help from him is P(A) = 0. Way to grumpy in class. Also somewhat rude in person when approaching after class.
His lectures weren't the most inspiring, so I can understand some of the other ratings. But his exams are pretty fair and based on the assignments, so if you put in the work it is manageable.
Professor is rude, every time you take an exam he is paranoid that you are cheating, he just reads off notes. I recommend not taking him, you will just be watching jamie's videos on youtube the entire course.
