She's SUPER SMART and has so much power over the class. but she's a good prof overall.
MATH is so hard.... but the examples she teaches is somwhat related to the exams...exams are really hard tho...oh yeh.. her yelling is scary...!
She is a crazy lady but her midterms are fair and easier than anticipated. She expects you to know things without really explaining them though and zooms right through her explanations sometimes. A hard course if you haven't taken any high school calculus before but if you have you should be fine.
Easy Midterms, pretty good notes, but i mostly rely on textbook for studying.

She is a good professor. This course gives fair midterms but tricky final exams!
she did a horrible job on the last section of my course, skimmed through 3 chapters at god speed. but turns out, it wasn't on the finals so she's ok i guess.
@@" but she was too fast in her last few sections...><
Her midterms are easy but the final is quite difficult. There are quite a lot of notetaking, so prepare to write and jot down notes quickly. Her jokes at the end of class are usually quite refreshing after a long lecture.
She's an excellent prof. She's clear, direct and organized. Her notes are like the bible of succeeding calculus. Yupz, they are better than the text.
Very good prof. She really knew what she was teaching.Go to her lecture even though it is in the early morning. Her midterm is fair, but not her final exam.
she's FAST FAST FAST FAST, you dont wanna miss any of her lecture..you'll fall way behind if you miss one class. but she's clear and very organized..
the worst teacher in the world
She's very clear and organized. Don't ask a question in her lecture - you're always wrong, she's always right ... which is good if you want to learn to do things the right way! Her exams were very fair. If you happen to go on to take 152 from Tariq YOU WILL MISS HER
VERY VERY FAST DO NOT SKIP! SKIP THEN YOU ARE DOOMED. Gives out ok midterms but a final that i would like to drop a F bomb on... a total of 3 proving questions and 2 weird funcions. Go for her to maximize your knowledge in math... despite the fact that she is quite uh... unfriendly during lectures.
Although she traches REALLY fast, but she's a good teacher, she knows what she is teaching! And Her notes are GREAT! And she is very helpful and explian in detail!
She teaches good & explains the problems clearly. But sometimes she changes 180 degrees! Depends on her mood! In case of asking for mark...don't waste your time! Once she makes her decision, she won't change it.
nice prof and her review is helpful
Very clear, good instructor. Although she may add to the fear factor if you already have math anxiety.
great notes, very helpful, attend lectures cuz she gives away a lot of hints for the midterm. she tries to scare you about how difficult the course will be, but its not
Very organized, very helpful, very good notes, one of the best prof that I ever have so far. Even though she sounds/seems mean, and scary, but she is actually pretty nice. Awsome jokes every class. Exams are very fair, but she is a little bit picky. Overall: AWSOME Prof.
Good prof, hard final exams, seems like she needs a hug. Maybe a couple hugs, and some stress relief.
Useful notes and fair exams
"ARE YOU NUTS?" Why are u taking a Math course WITHOUT Prof Menz? LOL a very exciting class having to get along with her ever-changing moods -.= Make sure no talking when she switches slides or She'll GO CRAZY! Very Clear explanations, excellent notes, Love her cool accent and voice!! GOOD PROF EVER MAN!.wait..hard final btw haha! but still cool
Fabulous prof, very clear although the order she teaches topics can be confusing. Don't worry if you've never taken Calculus before, I still ended up with an A-. Midterms are a joke, but study hard for the final!
She is an awsome prof. She knows her stuff well and good notes. Make sure you turn ur cell off and no talking btwn slide switching. Very esay midterms so try to do well cuz final is hard. Must take calculus with her or u are gonna be screwed.
GOOD TEACHER
great math teacher :) very clear notes. if you listen carefully in class, you basically know what's on the midterm. not hard to get good grades on midterm if you try and do assignments. but final is much harder compare to midterms, but if u do well on assignments and midterm, most students get average of B and above anyway.
notes are okay, midterms fair and she prepares you well if you listen-ie she tells you what equations to memorize-, but not good at explanations and brushes of questions. explosive temper if there is any noise. evil final
SUPER HARD COURSE.. DO NOT TAKE IT IF U DONT HAVE TO.. TEACHES TOO FAST GFG
Good prof, I really enjoyed her class she teaches pretty good. The midterms are easy but the final is hard.
she is a great prof! she gives excellent notes and example. She is well organized and willing to help anyone who has problem with math.
she's a good prof, but goes a little fast.. she knows her stuff but its some hard stuff man.. good luck
Possibly the best math prof ever. After having a bad math prof, you'd realize how good she is.
Great prof, best prof i've had so far. Doesn't spoon feed you. Really quick and clear. Her notes are understandable. Really organized. If you are thinking of taking math, get her. She's really good
Good instructor, although at first she may seem a bit bizarre. This, however, doesn't help the fact that the course hits you like a dump truck (unless you eat integrals for breakfast).
Everything up until the final exam was smooth sailing
Awesome instructor;
An extremely FUN and EXCITED class with Petra! Yes projects and reports due every 2 weeks, but u really learn a lot! I had never know almost everyone in the class before, and I did in this class! She not only emphasis on Math, but also heavily on team work! She is the first prof that I say "ONE WHO REALLY KNOWS HOW TO TEACH!"
Make sure you ace the midterm exams because they are a joke, but the final is messed!!!!
she is good. :)
very well prepared. notes are clear. although she act strict at the beginning, she's nice and funny actually. most of my frds like her.
her midterms are all jokes, the real killer is the final. Although almost everyone got over 80% on midterms, the final pulls everyone back to what you should really get in that course.
Most people might complain about how hard the material is but it's a very fair class. However, the overall average is pretty high so dont think that your doing so well. The final is the real decider in the class so study hard for it changes everything. The prof might come off with a bad attitude at the start but shes way better than most profs.
Petra is strict! It's usu. her way or the highway & she doesn't care at all about her students. In class she said a couple of times about how she will not help you unless it's during the scheduled times b/c she "doesn't get paid for that." Which means, if you want to email her during the weekend? She won't help you b/c she doesn't get paid for that.
earlier this week, she didn't show up for class and didn't tell anybody! She stood up 200 people! I went all the way up to school for nothing! And it takes me 1 hour just to get to school. It certainly looks like she cares about her students. NOT!!!
well, this is a very easy course, but sometimes this prof uses stupid methods to solve questions, and she even forces us to follow her stupid methods. as a whole ,a good prof, very passionate in lectures
Best math prof ever
attend her lectures!! very helpful. she prepare some notes on webct for you to follow in class. over all she is great, except for being strict
GREAT MATH PROF. She explains the concepts REALLY REALLY WELL. BEST Prof I ever had. Her class has a great atmosphere. The midterms are super easy, just the basic stuff to make sure everyone is doing their work regularly. She said the final is hard, but it was pretty easy. She does not scale the marks, so what you get is what you get. not bell curv
Clear, precise, helpful and fair. Top notch math prof.
She is very helpful.
She is an intelligent Prof. She has a unique way to teach. Personally, I think she cares about her students. Her exams are fair enough. Although she looks very strict, she is very helpful. I will rate this Prof. GREAT!!!!!!
the best math prof i have so far ..mts are easy...and i like the way she explains the materials altho she seems strict.. but if u study (esp do the practice exam) and do the assignments .. u will get a good mark ..ppl said the final's hard ...it's not so if u work hard on ur assignments
I personally dread math classes but surprisingly Menz made it quite enjoyable. Quite simply, you just have to attend all lectures and do all homework and you WILL do fine! The first midterm is a joke so you have to take advantage of it because the second midterm isn't as easy. But beware...the final is hard!
Decent at explanations, but unfortunately she spends far too little time explaining and instead focuses on repeated examples. This is very bad if you aren't good at catching on to concepts quicily. I HIGHLY suggest anyone who has her reads the textbook section for an upcoming lecture before attending. Do this, and you'll be fine.
Ok I skipped like 90% of the lectures and managed to get an A. Anyone who actually attempted the HW should get at least 90% on midterm. The stewert book is so good at teaching and pair that with the solution manual you're set! In fact i skipped even most of calc 1, and calc 3 lectures.
i hated calc until this course made it very fun. but the few lectures just before the finals, made me hate it again. if u ask questions, and u dont get something immediately, she will burn u for it...so hard to ask her questions.
Great Prof! very organized and explains very well with excellent note that you print off and come to lecture with. As long as you go to lecture to fill in the notes and follow along you'll be fine!!
this professor is very good, she will make sure you understand the questions. When you have questions you shouold ask in Class or ask her.She will help you to acheive you goal in math. Be sure you study all the past practise of exams.
I got A+ and this is all I did. I did all her assignments earnestly to get 6/6. Even though I was shy, I asked my classmates if I could check over my answers. I did lon capa right after the lecture (it takes 30 min MAX). Studied her notes, solve the last relevent thirty odd questions in each section. Went to workshops and helped out hot asian girls
Easy prof. She doesn't curve the marks either so everyone does well. However, she is extremely rude and very condescending. Take math with her if you want to do well but be prepared to skip a lot. After every lecture, I'm not sure if I should strangle me or her
You have to take Math 157 with her! She's a really passionate prof. and she made math really enjoyable for me (I used to HATE math) Her course materials are VERY HELPFUL, ATTEND ALL LEC. AND DO ALL ASSIGNED QUESTIONS and you'll be fine for the 2 or 3 easy midterms... but her final is VERY HARD... so study HARD for it! :)
She is the first good math professor I have ever encountered had. She speaks clearly, gets to the point, provides excellent lecture slides (to print) and gives fair exams. The course itself is very hard with LOADS of work, but there is no question that she is an excellent overall prof something I rarely say.
do not attend her class. Get a tutor and you will ace this class. If you have taken Calculus 12, dont even bother to get a tutor. If you dont get an A+, you fail.
Very mean prof, went over questions too fast, not explaining things very well. difficult to understand
Her tests are TRICKY(paper/electronic) but at the same time she provides enough and helpful sections that are meant to be attended by ones who think her lectures are not clear enough. Complete understanding of the material is needed to ace the course for those who havent taken calculus before.
Awesome Prof. explains everything to the point, she is clear and concise. The ONLY thing I hate is her T/F questions, she changes the smallest things on it and you will not notice. But basically if you don't do examples your screwed and lectures are a must! Also you should not fall behind, it is hard to catch up!
awesome and fun!
Awesome prof! A little fast with her notes, so it makes it hard to follow (occasionally). She is really willing to help as long as you want to learn. She does get frustrated sometimes. She attempts to make her class as fun as possible (with corny jokes at the end or start of each lecture). Exams are fair, assignments are easy, so yea, not bad :D.
Decent teacher. She'll occasionally rush through the material and seems a bit impatient at times, but she's more than willing to help students who seek it.
Great prof! Her notes are excellent, and her lectures are important, so make sure you don't skip them! The tests were rather tricky, but as long as you keep up with the homework and do the example questions she gives you in the notes, it shouldn't be too hard.
Great Professor!.. Must take her for beginners business math! She's funny & easy to approach. Attendance is mandatory, unless you got a friend to take notes for u. Class Average 67% this semester.
Amazing Prof! She was very helpful and the notes were all you needed to do well. Midterms were pretty easy and the final was fair. I definitely recommend her for MATH 157.
great prof! ... midterm 1 was pretty easy and midterm 2 and final were fair. Attendance is mandatory! Her notes are very important esp doing lon capa!
There were 10 written assignments, lon capa assignments after almost every lecture, 2 midterms worth 15% and a final (50%), so it's a fair amount of commitment, but if you attend the lectures and do the homework thoroughly, it should go well! Petra cares about her students.
Nice and funny lady reminds me my high school math teacher .(the appearance , both marry mathematicians, both enjoy sharing staff about their sons, both speak fast)But I really need to complain about TAs .every time I check the answers with my friend before I handed in assignments. When we got the marks ,she was always 6 out of 6 .and im like 5...:(
I feel bad for people who take course from her. She is a very difficult person. Sometimes nice sometimes not. Not my type. Her husband is in math department as well.
She gave me a very bad first impression. But, she's a pretty good prof. Finals and midterm were challenging, but if you were paying attention and doing the homework, then it's not that bad
She is a good prof. Her notes were clear and lots of explaination. Make sure you do well on the first two midterm terms since they are easy to get high marks. The final will most likely pull your mark down. So beaware!!
I did okay with Math in Highschool, but without any Calculus background, my grade severely dropped. Other than my struggle to understand, she has really good notes that will help you. Her midterms don't seem hard, as long as you know what you're doing. A good prof overall. Bad first impression though.
This prof freaked me out in the beginning of the sem. But now, i miss the math ninja and her nazi regime ways in the lecture hall.
She seems to think both a) that we're too dumb to understand proofs for theorems and b) that we already know the material we're there to learn. It's an insulting combination. Notes are right out of the textbook, so attendance isn't helpful. When the class avg. for midterm1 was 45% she said it was *our* fault, that we weren't trying hard enough.
SO bad. I agree with the person below me.. I have not learned a single thing from her even though I've gone and paid attention at every lecture...
Amazing prof. I hate math and always failed at it in HS; for the first time in my life I'm getting good grades and actually understanding stuff. Menz shows enormous enthusiasm for Math and acts as if she genuinely wants us to do well. She seems really dedicated to teaching, unlike most of my profs who seem bored out of their minds.
First off this course isn't too bad if you look at the material, what makes it hard is Petra's teaching style. Her notes are straight from the text and her examples are the easiest, even though those are nothing compared to examable questions. Your going to have to teach yourself and study hard. Exams are hard and class average is always low.
Shes a great teacher, probably the best I've ever had. Explains everything crystal clear. Her notes are straight out of the textbook, and examples are way too easy. Weekly assignments are a joke compared to the tests. Be prepared to do hundreds of the most difficult examples to do well on tests. Class average was around 50% for all midterms/finals.
VERY strict and angry-looking prof. If you are easily scared you will be scared by her. However, I really like profs who take total control so I really like Petra and her Nazi-ish way of teaching. Really strict and zips through material pretty quickly, but EXTREMELY clear. Ask her for help with homework at workshop! Complete explanations in 30 secs
She is an extremely arrogant professor, to say the least... I have no doubt she is great at mathematics but teaching it does not come naturally to her. I have never been treated worst by a professor in my entire university experience. She treats the students as if they are worthless animals and pays no attention to detail! Beware!!
To all those that wants to learn math: Petra Menz cannot teach. Find a better professor please. Nobody should attend her lectures to learn math. To all the future math157 students, please try your best to go to Professor Devos' lectures. He is that much better.
she the best looking prof ever.... If u wanna study math 157 go to devos class
Sarcastic when ppl make mistakes, but thats part of her humour. shes funny and great at teaching. shows u all the work required for solutions, which is very helpful for exams, caz all u have to do is remember the steps, and of course have a decent understanding to the reasoning of the solution.
she gives weekly assignment and makes you do online assignment as well but they help. She can be kind of mean but in a hilarious way so she keeps you awake during lecture! there is support session if you need help and overall i found the midterms fair except that she's extremely picky with the marking.
I think Petra is very misunderstood and people are thrown off by her straight-forwardness. She doesn't "sugar-coat" things and tells it like it is (which I love!) As for her teaching, if you haven't taken calculus she will go too fast (welcome to university!) but if you've taken it before, have her as your teacher! Midterm=easy, Final=KNOW UR STUFF
can be very blunt and a little abrasive but i love it! her notes were very neat and concise (so important!) and she went over examples carefully and clearly. final was pretty brutal but still fair. if you show up to lectures, and do the hw, it's nothing anyone can't handle. i'm just terrible at calculus but did okay in the end.
I don't understand her especially when she tells jokes because of her accent. Her online and offline assignments are annoying but helpful. Not enough time for midterms although they are easy. Final is harder and more challenging.
Great teacher. Must be good and fast at math to do well in this course. The course has a heavy workload but it's not too bad. workshops are quite helpful. study hard and you'll do fine.
She talks SUPER fast so PAY attention and don't be late. Her lectures are never dull because she keeps you on your toes and time flies. Her midterms are FAIR and considerably easy so STUDY hard for them! Final was LONG and alot of work. She'll try to lighten the mood every lecture with a comic or something. Good prof.
She is an awful teacher, rude to the students and completely incapable of explaining herself clearly. She is arrogant and frustrating; and seems to think her class is made up of morons. Save yourself the trouble and do not take her classes.
DREADFUL. While she might be good for other math courses, do NOT take math 190 with her. She is often rude to students, completely incomprehensible and expects way to much from her students.
Very difficult to understand, quite rude, prone to yelling and makes learning math difficult and painful. Not recommended for people who do not excel in math.
She goes pretty fast with the material so make sure you copy everything down. Try not to miss lectures. Weekly assignments and Lon Capa was helpful. Midterms were relatively easy but the final was kinda hard.
I took this class in Fall 08. She was very intimadating at first saying people will fail, but she is a good teacher overall. Her uploaded notes are fill-in-the-blanks. She offered sessions for us to ask her questions so go to those if you're weak in math. Calculus is like a big jump from Math 12.
The class is mathematics for elementary school teachers but instead Petra treats you as if you were still in elementary. Very condescending and often lacks explanations. Very unhelpful in class. I would not recommend her for this course, maybe for other math classes though she is better?
she's craaaazy.
Crazy But Helpful
Chances are you are not going to like her personality - she's tough, can be rude and can be intimidating. BUT if you put in the time and effort, you'll get a ton out of this course. She warns you of her high expectations. Do all the homework questions, use the mathlab, and see her one-on-one (completely different person) and you'll be just fine.
i can say honestly say she is the worst prof i have ever had. DO NOT TAKE HER COURSE
Excellent Professor but need to work hard to get a good mark
Do Not take this class by distance ed, whatever you do... I have taken many classes by distance ed without a prob, but having done Math 190 by distance fills me with regret and my GPA has taken a rough blow.
She is intimidating actually but she can also be really nice. Seems like she cares about her students. Although she seems like she thinks you know everything already and expects a lot from you, which is why this is a hard course. You have to work really hard to get your B or A
She is the BEST!!!
This is never ever an easy course! Especially when you choose HER as your prof! However, if you can attend all her lectures and go to the workshop frequently you will survive it. The midterms are fine but the final is horrible… be aware of it.
If you want to survive, you must be on top of the hw everyday ESPECIALLY IN TE BEGINNING. Mid term 1 and 2 is easy because she basically gives u the answers. i was getting 84%, then the final dropped me to 71. (56/100) I suggest U keep ur mark very very very high pre-final and you can walk out with a B easily. i barely studied for the final =(
You will do well in this course if you have taken Calculus before and work hard. You will do well in this course if you work your butt off and haven't taken Calculus before. She has good notes and there are no surprises. If you know your stuff you should have no problem with the midterms or the exams. You must attend every class.
For those who have not taken calculus at all, IT IS EXTREMELY HARD. So, for those who have, you still must work hard because there are a lot of applications. Prof. Menz cares about structure and organization, and statements in math. But midterms and finals were fair enough. Final was a bit hard. She's intimidating, but she's caring at the same ti
Her midterms and finals are fair. If you take calculus 12 prior to taking this course, you will be finding this just a little bit easier than those who haven't. You can't really say that if you work hard you'll get it, must I say, you need to understand it!
Her MT are extremely unfair, the T&F and domains. For those who have no calc background, she goes extremely fast, just to tell her lame jokes at the end of the lecture. Textbook questions are useless because they are unrelated to the exams. Study the examples from notes. Extra side note, she has messy and ugly writing
She is the most UNSYMPATHETIC TA I've ever met. Worst person to talk to, unreasonable, and VERY unfair. I'm not rating her as a prof, but as the workshop coordinator. She hands out zeros because she's lazy, and probably hates her job. She won't listen to you. She thinks she's always right, so don't even waste your time talking to her.
I took this back in 2008. Petra is kinda old-school in her approach to teaching math, and it honestly helped me out a lot. At first I absolutely hated the class, the assignments and her. But as time went by (and after going to her for help) I slowly started doing better and better. Don't give up on the class, work your butt off and you will be ok.
Always went past class time, and very difficult midterms. Loves math but perhaps not teaching. Very strict with her rules and most of the TAs in the workshop were not very helpful in the beginning.
She may be a good professor, but she is unfair and unsympathetic. She has a lot of students, especially since its an undergrad math class, but she shows no understanding. She also makes you feel stupid for asking a question or making a mistake - given its a first year course, she could make more of an effort to make it a more enjoyable experience.
I have no idea what mark I'll get yet because I've only done 1 midterm so far. I can tell you that the 1st midterm is very fair because most of the questions are either related to the questions from the assigned exercises or the exact same questions! online questions and instructor assignments are a guarantee boost for your mark as well.
I failed my diagnostic test and still managed to get A- on both my midterms.. that's how great she is. She also dressed up as a karate master and gave us candy on halloween!! just do all the required textbook questions and you'll do fine!
Coming into her class with only a low B math 12 makes her course incredibly hard. Not only is calculus a difficult course, but she teaches the lectures incredibly fast. I rarely get what she is teaching. As well, she makes herself seem unapproachable by constantly reminding us NOT to contact her for and instead go to the math workshop.
This lecture is easy to me,the prifessor is good, but her writing notes are not so well...Even can't guess what the word is ..
She goes extremely fast during lectures, chances are, you won't listen to a word she says because you're too busy copying notes. Midterms so far, I would say, are a lot easier for people who have taken calculus before, and a killer for people who haven't. The calc support class online was also completely irrelevant to what we do in class.
Do all the textbook questions she assigned, cus they are really helpful for the midterms..i ddidnt have any calculus background, but i found that if you try and understand the concept, u will at least get a B-
Key thing to doing well is to attend all lectures, as she takes very small details in her notes and puts it into exams, even when she only does one example. I've taken her class twice; once in the fall of 2010 and I just finished it this fall. I retook it because I received a C+ (I skipped almost every lecture after Sept), but now I have an A+. =)
do all your homework or else you will cram for 24/7 the day before the exam! do all your lon capa and homework assignments because if you fail both the midterms, you can still pass!
Extremely approachable and friendly prof. Very understanding of her students and goes out of her way to help anyone who asks. Exams are extremely fair but don't expect to do well in the course unless you put in a lot of work. It isn't easy. I ended up with an A- with no Calc background.
no comment
as long as you do textbook question you'll do well and attend workshop.
Her midterms may be fair but her final is COMPLETELY UNFAIR..i studied over 60 hours for this final, doing every textbook question and managed to get 55%.. She is rude and completely unapproachable i strongly disagree with her teaching methods
Well, whoever said taking MATH 12 would be sufficient for a first year calc course is completely retarted. and taking it with petra makes it that much worse. Cant understand, trys to scare/intimidate the class, css session are useless, and her final is completely unfair and she assigns 50% of your grade to it. TAKE WITH ANOTHER PROF
WOW!! I was in CACLC SUPPORT ALSO but I got an A-! Studied around 3hours 5 days before the final and got an A- on the final haha! KEY TIP FOR FUTURE STUDENTS: do the assigned textbook questions throughout the course! do not cram last minute! Her writing is messy so PAY ATTENTION!Be respectful and don't talk when she's talking.
menz really wants all her students to succeed. Don't cram, do math homework from textbook and make sure u keep note of what she tells u, straight up will be on the test.Great teacher, really supportive. writing isn't always legible though. Comment below is very accurate too!
Calc background is definitely recommended. Lectures are helpful as she will dictate exactly what is needed for full marks and trust me, it is all too easy to lose marks for omitting the smallest of details. Assignments, midterms and finals were fair and although I didn't do textbook questions, they are recommended as they will show up again.
Interesting Prof, funny jokes at times, makes the class fairly interesting.
Her accent was no problem for me. Her m/t were fair but the final was pretty hard. I think she's a very good prof and will offer you help when you need it.
Great class, but you really have to pay attention. Go in for extra help and you'll do great. Get to know your derivatives!
Best math prof at SFU. Exams are extremely fair and predictable. She tells you stuff that's going to be on them throughout the semester. Very understanding and a great help. Course is easy once basic derivative rules are learned. Very intense though, do all the practices, assignments, and practice exams.
Menz makes math much easier since her notes are very useful, but you must attend class to fill them in. She's clear in her explanations, but can go too fast. An Excellent prof. But it's still math, so be prepared.
Not too bad for the first part. After the second midterm she goes on a blitz, and covers things that should take 3 classes in 1 lecture.
She is very clear and had good depth in maths.
horrible teacher, lecture notes look like chicken scratch , doesn't explain notes throughly, forces you to read the book. you will fail this class if you do not have a calculus background. useless teacher, makes you lose hope in math
Petra has a wonderful set of notes that explain everything you need to know. She gives hints on things that will be on the midterms and final and is very fair in her assessments of exams and assignments. She speeds through the course quickly so background calculus is preferable, but not essential. You must work hard though and stay on top of things
It would be helpful to have a background in calculus before taking her course, because she doesn't make calculus any easier. She puts relevant questions in our midterms and you would have seen those questions if you did your homework. In my opinion there's too much theory questions and not enough mechanical ones.
Taking MATH 157, chances are, you are either pursuing a Business or Economics Major. You'll find that, if you put enough effort into the course, these are some of the EASIEST marks you'll get compared to the BUS and ECON courses that you'll take. Doing your homework is a must, the course goes fast. Great prof, dry sense of humour. Recommended.
Worst teacher ever. she doesn't just have an accent or make simple applications seem impossible, she doesn't even care to help you. She was in during a workshop and was really quite rude when I needed help. Not impressed.
Do homework, read textbook, fully understand concepts then you will get an A in her class. She teaches fairly quickly so its highly recommended you attend all lectures. Lenient with marks, only scales up on final.
Great instructor! If you work hard, and always keep up with assignments, you will succeed. She may seem hard at times, but in the end, she really just wants you to do well. Definitely enjoyed my semester with her.
MAKE SURE you pass the diagnostic test. The extra work is absolutely useless and the sessions are a waste of time. Do all the work and you'll be fine.
Her notes are really easy to understand, weekly assignments are hard so be sure to use the workshop, exams are really easy. Even though she says she doesn't scale, her final exam is scaled and i got over 100%
Fantastic prof! Her lectures notes are all you need to survive this course. I bought the textbook and didn't even use it once! All I needed to study were her notes and past exams to do well on the exams. Attend all her lectures and pay attention (she goes fast)and you will do well!
Ugh she is just awful ... the assignment and exams had nothing to do with what we did in class and in the text book. garbage!
Ridiculous amount of work for one class, over 40 assignments- online, group and textbook and weekly reflections (for a math class?!) Lecture notes are inconsistent with her exams. She only gave one hour for each midterm, half the class didn't finish. She'll spend 2 classes on the easiest concepts, and skim through the hard stuff. AVOID her.
She was very helpful! I think she is a good professor but students need to put in the effort. A lot of people complain but do not even play their part. She makes you work hard because your going to learn how to teach. If you're going to be a teacher stop complaining and work hard. How can you be a math teacher if you can't even get through class
Decent teacher, not enough time given for midterms (there were two of them). Knew the subject well, but could be abrasive at times when help was required. Tries to keep lectures interesting, but does manage to skim over important units while spending time on easy ones. A little on the hard side, but not the worst there is
At first I thought Petra was okay but she turned out to be incredibly unprofessional . She inputted the wrong final marks for students and did not change them for a whole day and when she turned she did not even issue an apology. The course is also incredibly hard and the TA was no help at all.
Was put off by her at first, but as the semester goes on she becomes more welcoming and helpful!
I was quite unimpressed by the teaching ability of Professor Menz. She moved quickly, and came across as very rude if you asked her any questions. Her exams were pretty unfair in my eyes. I ended up dropping it and taking the engineering calculus instead, found it much clearer.
The material isn't difficult but there is a LOT of work. Spreads marks out over assignments. She's really good about listening to feedback and responding. She's tough and expects you to do your work. No deadline extensions. More than fair with marks.
I found Petra to be a very tough teacher. Her lectures were very long and she only focused on the easy chapters. Too many assignments for a math class. Her tests were very hard and did not relate to material taught in class. She was very unapproachable and did not like to be asked questions! Avoid this class!!!!
Worst prof I have ever had! She is extremely rude and just assumes everyone understands everything immediately. However, she is sometimes funny and is knowledgeable of the course material. Just WAY TOO MUCH homework!
Unable to release grades on time but imposes strict deadlines on students 10/10 would recommend if you are happy with your life and need a reality check
Tried her best to make concepts clear and easy to understand but alot of the time she would rush and make it more difficult. Tests are very theory based.
Really caring, her routine worked well for me. However, due to unforeseen circumstances I was unable to pass this class(presumably, I haven't taken the exam yet, but I need like an 80% to get a decent final mark)
Awesome and touche prof. She is inspiring and caring(if you can prove to be respectable). She even pulled some bad/mean comments on this site to to laugh it off with the class in lecture. Her lectures are fast but clear, she is also very knowledgeable in the material. btw you get roasted in class if you don't study and slack off.
I walked into the lecture hall and I was Petrafied. End of story.
Expects a lot from her students, but does not give them the time or tools they need to actually meet her expectations. Her teaching style is rushed and extremely difficult to follow. If you are unfortunate enough to get stuck with her as a prof, here's a tip: skip lectures and watch Jamie Mulholland's Math 150/151 series on YouTube instead.
I really enjoyed Mrs. Menz's class. She is tough, but she genuinely seems to enjoy the material she teaches, and her passion makes lectures less dull (but I mean... how exciting could a calc lecture be?). There is lots of homework, but I really think that it helped with preparation for the final exam.
I found Petra to be very passionate about what she teaches, which also her weakness in this course. There way way too much work and confusion for a first year course. Don't take this course if you have a full course load. She's sweet but can be very salty. I found she had a general lack of understanding if you had other classes or commitments
Petra is an amazing teacher. But she does expect a lot from her students. You will need to put at least 10 hours a week on this course if you want to succeed.
Does not give enough time to complete assignments but she expects way to much from students. She had three assignments due each week and the course ends up taking up so much of your time that you fall behind in other classes. Does not take into consideration that some students have full course loads.
Petra is definitely interested in Math, and is passionate about what she teaches. However, she does not provide the answers or show you the "steps" of completing a question. She leaves this up to you, so if you struggle with math then you will have a difficult time in this class. There is also way too much weekly homework and material.
Looked at my midterm before I handed it in and said "what is this" 10/10 would not recommend
Her midterm tends to be kinda quirky like her. Focus on specific details in midterms to avoid losing marks. Beware of notation errors and don't expect her midterms to be like standard midterms.
Petra is passionate about her work. Although rushed at times, the class overall is quite laid back. Yes, she is strict, but this helps the class understand concepts more well. Be sure to understand the notes that you are taking and do the homework. The midterm that I just completed was fairly straightforward, based on the instructor questions.
A professor who is totally non-sense. You can get a zero because the misuse of punctuation in the midterm! This is not English class! Is math!!!
Obscure midterm, not fair considering the fact that many students only take math 157 because it's a requirement for business, and are not Math majors. Could make the course more straightforward and reasonable for people who just need some math for further business courses. Sorry we're not all math professors.
This course is designed for Elementary Teachers to learn basic math. The concepts explained in this course are far from basic. It is difficult to see how this course is designed to prepare teachers to teach basic arithmetic to elementary students. The way this course is taught is almost counter productive. Too much homework ridiculous expectations.
The most ridiculous midterms for students that aren't focusing on math. Makes obscure exams that don't credit the effort and learning that students have fairly and appropriately. Exams are much more difficult than the previous midterms.
Such a maniac!
Petra doesnt understand that many of us are Business majors forced to take 157. She flys through the notes expecting us to know this. Wont answer your questions. Dont take it with her! If you are reading this stay away!! Unless you have calc experiance you are destined to be at the bottom of the curve. Guaranteed
Fill in the blanks is all you do with no real motive to learn anything. Get ready to spend your life indoors and on youtube learning on your own time. Petra goes through material lightning quick and doesnt explain anything instead skips steps. Exams are nothing like the material. Math 157 has taught me nothing with Petra.
THIS COURSE HAS TO BE ROCKET SCIENCE THE WAY SHE TEACHES IT
Just dont take the course with her. Thank me later
Took this because i had to as a business student not because i wanted to but instant regret taking it with Petra. Fingers crossed for the upcoming final. She taught me nothing all we did was fill in the blanks.
Stopped going to class after the second midterm as all Petra does is fill in the blanks, skip steps.
Walked into class and walked out more confused than ever
Are you a Business student? Better start praying cause Not even God will save you from this class. Stay home and read the Bible cause youll learn more useful stuff from it rather than showing up to her class
She flys through notes expecting you to know it all
If I knew about rate my prof coming in this year to university i wouldve saved my gpa but anyone who reads this please save yourself! I give her a -10/10
Im wishing the curve saves me but the prof gets an F hopefully i get atleast a C.
STAY AWAY UNLESS YOU HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE TRUST ME YOU DONT WANT TO DO THIS TO YOURSELF !!!!!!
I did my homework every night but im still struggling with youtube videos. The prof doesnt explain anything and seems to want her students to be smart enough to not ask questions during lectures. Please listen to all the reviews.
I dont understand why shes a prof, should have chose a different career path. If shes not there to teach or explain anything why is she even there! I can assure you that i could fill in the blanks sitting at home watching a video if that was the purpose.
Easiest math course 157 turned into the hardest rocket science course and all due to the prof Petra Menz. I sugguest you stay away !
I have taken calc courses at 3 different insitutions unfortunately couldnt transfer credits one being math 157. Has to be the worst prof by far in my 3 years of being in post secondary!!!
don't take her. especially if you only taken pre calculus, because she skips a lot of steps. if you dont have a background in calculus, youre going to struggle real hard in this course. her skeleton notes makes no sense, especially because her writing sucks. i must refer to other resources instead of hers. she doesnt explain concepts well.
Came in motivated but after the first mid term she didnt seem to care much about explaining her methods and her notes became really dry and hard to follow!
I couldnt follow her way of teaching as she blew through notes super quick in her lectures. She was not engaging at all. Dont reccomend at all
Save yourself the work and choose another prof you will regret taking the class with petra. If you dont believe me see for yourself!
Obscure midterms that have questions youve never come across before, uses true/false questions for a math midterm, expects you to know everything, way too many concepts in this course to cover in 13 weeks.
Trust me, never take this prof's math 157. If u need it, just take a different prof. She is Slightly mean. Lots of homework(you need to spend at least 3-4 hours on hw every week), Incomprehensible lecture(rush lec and think everyone already understand it), terrible note(bad hand writing, and left lots of blank in the note, go learn by yourself!)
Final was nothing like the notes, notes were nothing but fill in the blanks. Math is not being taught the right way.
Please save yourself the sleepless nights and take a different prof!
I WAS SUPER SHOCKED AT HOW THE NOTES MADE NO SENSE BUT THEN THE FINAL WAS EVEN HARDER!!!! This was one prof i will never forget for life. Dont take this prof!
She is too smart to teach a basic level course like 157. It's difficult for someone that smart to teach students who have no idea what's going on. Feel guilty complaining as she does care for everyone to do well and tries to give us bonuses to pass, but this class was just SO hard. Overall, wouldn't recommend 157 to anyone because you will HATE IT.
Honestly, the exams are much easier than the paper worksheets and online questions. It isn't even comparable. She puts very easy and fair questions that are nothing like the notes as the notes have much harder questions. It is an easy class granted you pay attention and practice problems/do homework without googling everything.
The class isn't hard as long as you are naturally good at math and/or have taken calculus in high school. As someone who did already take calc, I can say that Petra didn't do the best job at explaining certain things and I usually just used my knowledge from calc 12 because her methods were wack. Also, learn the correct notation on everything.
I did not take Calculus in high school and I still managed to get an A+ in the class. I just did the questions provided in the notes and it was enough to understand how to do other similar questions. The midterms and final were easy and fair.
Previous calculus experience would be a big asset. The prof goes through concepts at an unrelenting pace; blink, and you'll miss an entire slide of notes. Studied using her lecture notes and IQs (never touched textbook nor did any CNQs) and got solid marks on the exams. Walked out of most lectures confused, but her teaching style kept me focused.
Prides herself on how hard her class is and how many students she fails, do not take any of her classes.
Decent math prof. Felt bad because she was constantly joked about and turned into a meme. Her slides are helpful. Exams were fair.
Dont take math 157 with her unless you wanna fail
take her if you wanna fail 157
DO NOT under any circumstance take her class. If you are given this prof drop the class. She is the least understanding person I have ever had the misfortunate of interacting with. Started the class by joking about how inaccessible she is and the semester went down hill from there. Dr. Menz does not realize that first years does not have PHD's
Currently in this course for PDPn requirements. It's October now, and this course has already made me switch my entire plan for graduation. This is by far the worst math course I have ever taken in my UD degree. It's literally horrible. Good luck to all future teachers with this course. I'm happy if I barely pass.
This is an extremely demanding course so you need to be determined to work hard. Has high expectations but does set you up for success if you are willing to put in the hard work. Do not take many courses alongside this course, you will need to spend everyday doing math to succeed. Do all the work as the tests are fair and based on them.
Please Don't take her course.
DO NOT take her classes! Her lecture slides are clear and easy to study on your own but you have to print out her slides with blanks and fill it out in class. She does not provide the finished notes from class, so you can't skip any class if you want the notes. Practice questions help term tests but final is cumulative and too much to study
One of the worst classes of my degree. Almost reconsidered pursuing my lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. Class consisted of perplexing lectures and an immense amount of homework. When seeking help, Petra was very condescending. I hope someone else teaches this course.
Dr. Menz really cares about her students' learning experience. The course was very well organized and the test material was clearly connected to the assignments. But in the end this is a very hard math course; you have to put in the effort. Dr. Menz is not warm & fuzzy, but she is approachable. If you are working hard she wants to help you do well.
Petra is just awful. She doesn't care much about her students, she offers extra help but is not helpful. I took this course because it is a PDP requirement, I had taken Pre-cal 12 in high school and got an A, this class I barely passed. There is a lot of work (which I expected), but her videos were dry and she is not willing to explain with detail.
JUST DONT.
This class is very content heavy, take fewer courses if possible. I recommend getting a tablet for this class because it will make notetaking and group assignment submissions much easier. Petra's exams this semester was mostly based on lightboard lectures, group assignments, and explorations. She may change it up*.
Get ready to do a LOT of work. The grading scheme was stupid and youre forced to do weekly group assignments regardless of having to work remotely and getting 100% on those was impossible. The prof constantly yelled at students and spoke to them rudely in front of the class when they asked questions she didnt like. Ridiculous.
WORST class I have ever taken. Petra was extremely rude and condensing, always saying she's ready to help but puts students down when they ask questions. Class was super difficult even though it is a first year course. If you have to take it do NOT take it with Petra. She is unpleasant and just plain mean! She makes learning harder and stressful.
Petra can be a bit scary at times, I think this is because she has a different background and is more strict than other profs. As a person, I don't think she is awful. I have not had a negative experience with her in our class so far but she does tend to be passive-aggressive sometimes. Just make sure to review and practice, you'll do fine!
Petra Menz in the worst prof i have ever had in my whole entire life. She is so mean and makes people cry. She gives you so much homework and does not explain why you are wrong if you are. Do not ever take a class with her.
Please never take a class with her!! She made students feel bad about asking questions, and was extremely passive aggressive in her responses. The first day of class she played a video from her husband and son saying something along the lines of: "She may seem a bit mean, but she cares." They were definitely right in the first half!
The only grade I received was less than an A- overall at Sfu. She was not available for help when asked, often telling students to 'google it' or use Wikipedia. This was because her teaching materials were insufficient for the major exams. Pray you get a good group for the group work, and know exams are 10x harder than the material she uses.
dont take this class if at all possible. an unbelievable amount of work with unclear lectures. terrible class honestly probably the worst one ive ever taken its even changed my mind about pdp i cant believe sfu has this class the way it is.
the worst class at sfu hands down. its shameful that this class is set up the way it is at a top rated university. lectures are extremely confusing and there is an absurd amount of work. this is a terrible class and sfu students (who want to become teachers) deserve better
Petra is an amazing professor! She cares about her students' success. She is easy-to-understand and encourages students to ask questions. The Q-Workshop lets students learn together with help from Petra or the TA. Her class is fun with hands-on activities. If you work hard, she isn't as hard as you think! She uses tough love, but has a heart!
Petra cares a lot about her students and made the lecture very engaging. The course was extremely organized. She can seem a little scary but she really cares about your success. The course was a ton of work though. Was very difficult to juggle with multiple other courses.
The combination of passive aggressiveness and horrendous exam questions that are based on memorizing the names of mathmatecians and little to do with the actual contents. She's a math teacher instructor who doesn't know how to teach. Please don't take her class as best you can. I never felt so upset over a prof this much in my four years.
Never interacted with her in person however, communicating with her over email, canvas, and through zoom was very pleasant. She always responded kindly and answered my questions. I found the course well instructed and easy to follow.
Petra is a great instructor. At first she is very intimidating, and I can't lie, I did cry in her class LOL. But she cares about student success and she is extremely passionate about math. People think she is mean, but I think she is just very blunt in a way that many people are not used to. Very demanding course, practice some math before if u can
Petra was intimidating at first but once you talk to her one-on-one, she's actually like a friend. The class had group assignments, a reflection and 3 online quizzes due every week [plus the draft for the GA]. Just show her that you're trying hard and participate and you'll be fine! I bombed all my exams but got a B.. DEFINITELY GO TO Q WORKSHOP.
I loved Petra! She's not really all that strict, she's just German. I found her hilarious. She also cares very much and she will really be there to help you! Math190 is a 4 credit course, not easy GPA boost or some quick credits. lots of work. There is help available - you just have to be the one to ask for it.
She might seem critical and mean at first, but once u start participating all the time & show her that u always come prepared to class (tip: finish all weekly quizzes before that unit's introduced), she gets to know u better and hence a profound relationship between u and her. Don't memorize a thing or u'll do poorly. Full understanding's the key.
Petra is a demanding yet caring professor. Her class is challenging, but engaging. I found unstuckstudy ai and Q-Workshops super helpful for staying on top of the workload. If you're willing to put in the effort, you'll learn a lot from this course.
I took FANX99 with Petre. I think she truly is an amazing prof who wants her students to do well. She was always very helpful and willing to provide extra help. As long as you try and make an effort and put the time in you'll be good for this class. Don't be afraid to ask her questions. Her midterms were fair and samples were representative.
i'm finishing up FANX99 with Petra, and so far she has been a great instructor. She teaches math in a way that is engaging. If you participate and engage in the class discussions/activities, and do your homework and assigned assignments, you are certain to succeed. She is very charismatic and caring! Just be open minded and don't be intimidated :)
i loved petra! she can seem a little intimidating, but once you get to know her, she's honestly so funny. she's very passionate about math and really wants her students to succeed. her exams were fair, and were very similar to the sample ones she posts on canvas. as long as you put in the work and participate, you will do well in the class.
This is my second time taking this class, and Petra was amazing! She really helped me understand the concepts & really cared that the class tried. She's German, so seems tough, but is super respectful & funny. The course is ran by a bunch of profs and TAs tho, so there are weekly quizzes, weekly assignments, and weekly online stuff.
Petra is honestly the best prof you could ever have for this math class. She seems intimidating at first, but she's quite funny and wants you to succeed. I took this course just for credit and usually am bad at math, but she helped me succeed. The exams are very similar to the practice exams she gives so study those and you should be good.
She's not strict or scary, she's just German lol. She cares deeply about her students and there are so many chances for more help! This is a four credit course, expect a lot of work (especially group work). That said, I thought the assignments were really fun! I think that Petra might be the only prof to ever believe in me
Best professor I have ever had. She is so kind, she loves her students, honestly, if I could give her a rating of 100/10, I would. I don't know why she has a low rating. I suck at math and always have, but TRUST ME, you will do SO good in her class.
Honestly great professor! Initially when looking at her RMP ratings I was kinda worried, but after taking FANX99 she's great. She makes math concepts very easy to understand and offers help when you need it. She shares a lot of personal stories which are very interesting and inspirational. If you're taking FANX99 she's the best option!
Petra cares about her students and whether they do well. the course has a lot of quizzes and assignments, if you attend class regularly and do the work you will do very well.
She was honestly a super nice math teacher she deffo cares a lot about her students she did a quiz every tuesday which I failed but if u stuided u can do fine, in the end i made it out of the coruse with a b so failing those quizzes every week dotn matter but make sure you try to particpate and always do hoemwork it saves u
