Awesome Professor!!!
She has great experiments and she's not boring, you'll learn a lot but it's hard
awesome teacher
No Comments
awesome, energetic, entertaining, very clear, goes at good pace, hard tests
very good teacher if you want to actually learn this subject
great lecturer... and HARD tests.. but DANM it feels good to do well..
She rocks my socks off.
She puts a lot of work into her lectures and labs, and it shows.
You dont have a choice if taking Chem Lab
She blew stuff up during lecture. If you need more than that to convince you, there's something wrong with you.
Good lectures as far as chem goes. Test are not very hard if you know the material.
Shes the best...shes famous...!
SHE IS THE BEST!!!! I actually enjoyed Chemistry for once in my life!
She is way into her material and teaches an excellent class.
Easy A if you have taken AP chem in high school. Lectures were about as interesting as you can make chem. Know how to read and apply formulas given to you and you are fine.
Kickass lady
The best chem teacher EVER.
She is great, makes chem clear as chem can be. Great with demostrations and has a snese of humor
GREAT Teacher! Actually makes you somewhat like chemistry. Lectures go by fast. BEST chem teacher in the school.
she makes lecture a little more exciting than most of the other dull professors. her tests are not too hard either.
REally awesome teacher and person. She truly cares for her students and wants them to succeed. Super helpful
Van Koppen is amazing! Her lectures are great and she really cares about her students. It's definitely worth it to take her class - even if it's earlier in the morning!
very helpful, with student, really cares and wants everyone to do well...gets really embarressed very easily...its funny to see
MONEY.. Makes class interesting, but tests are hard!!! She does a very good job teaching the class and gives lots of handouts of equations and all kinds of notes you 'll need for tests...which is why tests are so hard though. It's a double edged sword.
Van Koppen likes to talk a lot about chemistry so she knows whats up. You have to study for her tests and know your ish. She also likes to talk about her mother country so be prepared to hear some history.
Encourages everyone to do well. Probably one of the best professors at UCSB. Very enthusiatic and wants everyone to learn and succeed. A real inspiration.
GREAT Prof...highly recommended...extremely encouraging and certainly makes one enthusiastic about this subject...wants everyone to do well and learn...she understands that life needs a healthy balance and actually promotes fun- safe fun that is...
van koppen is the best. i was thinking of transferring because i didn't think the chem program at SB was that great.. but after having van koppen, she's inspired me to stay the full four years.
TAKE VAN KOPPEN! She is fun, enthusiastic and AWESOME! She turns chemistry into FUNistry. She is awesome and makes you learn the stuff with an ease in lectures. She makes the hardest subject easy. Her tests are a little hard but she is best chem prof
Van Koppen is the best Chem prof ever. See all the other comments, they are so true. She really stresses problem solving, know how to do the problems she presents and puts on practice tests, cause they show up. Seems like she really cares student success.
She really cares about student success and she makes chemistry interesting to learn. Even though her tests are more difficult than the other professors', I still prefer her to them
Van Koppen must not need an explanation.
A teacher who really inspires student. She explains the materials clearly, and with passion. She never hesitates to help students understand certain concepts, and very committed to help students to do well on the tests and earn highest possible grade.
wow, everyone else already said it. great teacher rather than an instructor.
Better then any other Gen Chem Prof
Dr. Van Koppen was really one of my favorite professors. Even though her class is tough, I enjoyed it and learned a ton. Shes also a really nice lady, go talk to her in office hours and you'll get points on tests.
Van Koppen is so nice and she is very clear and helpful. Her grading scale helps you out a lot and her ADD is so cute.
Best professor i've had so far! She is so enthusiastic and fun. Even causes explosions during class! Attend lecture for sure, sooo entertaining and also clearly taught. SHe is an amazing teacher and an even more amazing person!
Best chemistry professor!. take her!! you won't regret it!
Amazing teacher. Really cares about students. Rational and practical teacher. Take her over any other Chemistry teacher if you have the opportunity to, you will be making a mistake otherwise!
Teacher not only cares about doing well in her class but also about doing well in college and getting involved. She prepares you for everythig and if go to CLAS you will Ace every test. Any teacher that makes learning chemisty interesting... ROCKS!!
Van Koppen is the best teacher I have had so far here. She really wants her students to understand and succeed in her class and she has a great sense of humor.
Very interesting. Quizes are pretty easy but the tests are very difficult. Go to CLAS and you'll do 3 times better than you would if you didn't.
Nice, helpful teacher. It's always fun when she does experiments in class. You have to read the textbook before you go to class though and her tests are incredibly HARD. :) --> that's a sarcastic happy face
Fun teacher because she did some cool experiments. The quizes seem easy then the tests are hard so watch out.
van koppen is a great professor, she truly wants students to learn the material. Just make sure to go to class and do the problems
great teacher, very helpful, she's hard but you really learn a lot, and it's def not impossible to get an A if you stay on top of things
She's a great professor. She knows the material and she earnestly wants all her students to learn SOMETHING. She has really cool experiments too. The tests aren't easy. Take her class!
this is definitely one class i didn't look forward to, but after going to her first lectures, i knew it wouldn't be so bad. she's a really funny professor who really has a true passion for teaching. she is definitely the best professor i've ever had. sign up for her class
Not an easy class but a great professor...take her anyway you will be glad the work is worth it
Very good teacher, but the grading is a little tough.( first midterm is easy, second is hard, but the final helped me out a lot )
You'll have to work hard, but you won't mind doing it. She is a great teacher, and she'll help you in anyway she can. I really appreciated her willingness the answer questions, and she sends very helpful practice e-mails. Good luck!
Awesome teacher. Great at explaining and makes lecture interesting. 85% = A-/A/A+. Willing to curve to help students get A. Quizzes, midterms, and final similar to HW (which isn't turned in or graded). Easy if you study and read the book.
She made me love chem. But after that, I got Prof ****, then it's all down hill with chem.
She is one of the best lecturers on this campus! Tests are hard but there is a pretty fair curve and she is always willing to help students. Take her for Gen Chem! You will learn so much and enjoy the class!
She's a great teacher & always willing to help.
awesome teacher, very helpful and it's easy to understand her lectures...one of the few people who can make chem fun
Van Koppen is AMAZING. Such a good lecturer, very knowledgable, includes demos in her class, and actually takes the time out to email info to her class. Don't even think about taking the Chem 1 series with another professor, not if you want to learn.
A great teacher who really takes time out to help you understand. She's very enthusiastic and loves what she does. Do the hw and example problems and if u dont understand she's more than willing to help. ***If you take CLAS, don't take it with ***** b/c ***** is pretty discouraging.

Well i actually don't have Van Koppen, but i do sit in her class whenever i can. And i must say, she IS a great professor! i regret not signing up for her as my professor. So if you know what's good for you, don't be like me! (Sign up for her!) :)
Van Koppen is amazing. She isn't an easy professor. However, she keeps my interest, does cool things with fire in lecture, has great handwriting, cares whether or not her students understand, is friendly and bubbly , and is immensely knowledgable. I had zero interest in chemistry before her class.
Everyone swears that she is more intresting than the other gen chem professors but she is just as boring. Goes over problems rather than lecturing so its easy to learn how to do the problems to pass the class but you dont learn why it works. Boring lecturer.
Van Koppen knows what she is talking about. i respect her for her intelligence. i dont think it is fair that all the other professors tests are easier... she is a good teacher but not so great that her students should be able to do harder tests than everyone else

She's very enthusiastic and hyper so you don't fall asleep. She is very clear and easy to understand, so if the book confuses you she clears it all up. She really cares about students and wants everyone to do well. She talks about her having ADD and by attending her lectures its evident she has it.:
Van Koppen is the best professor at UCSB! She truly cares about teaching and helping you understand the material. Don't be discouraged by the difficult tests because she has a great curve. Go to lecture & do the homework and you will do great in her class!
I have had her all year. let me say, shes is gives difficult exams. However, she really wants her students to succeed...so she does experiments in class alot. Which is entertaining. GO TO CLASS OFTEN! ENROLL IN CLAS with Terri, shes great!!!
Van Koppen was awesome! Her lectures are really easy to follow and her teaching methods were very helpful. Test were HARD though!
Go see Petra after exams! She is more than willing to give extra points if you can argue anything.
I've sat in on her lectures. She's like Paris Hilton - way overrated!
Her lectures usually kept me awake, and she seemed to want everyone to do well, but I went to her office hours (more than once) and she was not helpful at all.
Van Koppen is the most helpful and best Chem teacher at UCSB. Don't start with any other teacher or you won't get the foundation you need to continue.
The best teacher at UCSB.

Nice lady, much better than Harris or **** by far.
One of the best professors i've had. Extremely helpful and tests are fair.
Tough but very fair. She delivers all you need to know in lecture and with style. You really have to work to do well in this class, but it is worth every minute. go to CLAS.
Awesome
Petra is so nice and willing to help. She is super easy to follow in lecture and makes the time fly by. Go to lecture! it's actually worth it.
She is one the best professors i've had at UCSB. She really cares about her students and is very helpful. She is very approachable and sweet. If you have questions about your midterm/finals definately talk to her, cause she'll probably give you extra points.

VERY good class, she does lots of fun experiments, is very helpful, and the lectures usually aren't too boring. The class has lots of work and is time consuming, but worth it!
awesome teacher!
Speaks well, and knows how to teach
PHENOMENAL! i looved her so much. she is the best teacher ive ever had. She is very clear, sometimes cracks funny jokes, does awesome experiments in class. Do the practice exams and quizzes and you'll do great.
She is definitly knowledgable about chemistry and is able to verbalize her knowledge very well. However be warned her tests are hard. Do the practice tests and questions from the book and you will be fine. She makes it interesting and with a bit of studying you will be set. Realize though this is not a class for complete slackers.
She's a great professor, and her lectures are always fairly easy to follow. The exams aren't that bad so long as you pay attention in class.
I loved this class due to the professor! Van Koppen goes above and beyond! She allows a whole page for notes. A lot of my friends ****ed about their professor, while I just smirked. :)
Great professor. She is what professors should be. Very interesting and enthusiastic lectures. Her quizes and tests are curved. She sends out numerous emails throughout the course, and repsonds very well to them. Great teacher, highly recommended.
FABULOUS teacher and great person. She would keep the lecture interesting enough so that attendence time and time again was more than 75% (which is pretty good and says something about her). She was always willing to help and would give you a copy of notes if you missed class for an excusable reason. Switch into her class, even if it's at 8am.
This is the best professor I had all year. Make Chem way more interesting then it should be. Don't take this class if you like boring professors. She is very fair and understanding. I took CLAS( take w/terri if possible) and went to most lectures, got an A. She really likes to teach and it shows. Dont read the book, but do the problems
Easiest chem professor yet!! she's very passionate about what she does. Her tests are very fair. I highly recommend taking CLAS with Terri (don't take it with Andrew if u can avoid it). She does some experiments in lecture that are actually cool. TAKE HER!!!
actually cared about her students...pretty rare in the large scale class uc systems. pretty refreshing to know that some professors are there to teach instead of the time filler between research projects
Best chem prof at SB. Her tests are kinda hard and require you to think, but they are totally fair and you learn a lot in her class. She expects more out of you, but she is entertaining and really cares about her students. Not an easy A at all, but go to CLAS and do practice exams and you should get at least a B. tricky final though :(
Amazing teacher, had demonstrations for almost every class. Tests are slightly hard, but she really tries to help you understand.
Go to her offices hours, and if you're going to take CLAS have Terri has your tutor. Best of luck.
The quarter hasn't ended yet, but so far she has been very helpful and it's actually easy to understand. She does EVERYTHING to help people and she wants every one of her students to get A's. :D
Van Koppen is amazing. This class is HARD if you didn't take AP Chem and she moves very, very fast inclass. She sends you emails practically every night telling you what to study and giving practice problems to help you succeed. Despite all this though, I still pretty much had to teach myself because it the class goes so fast.
very easy class if you actually do (or know how to do) all the hw and pay attention in class, or if you've had ap chem before, since it would all be review. she also puts up all the old quizzes and exams online for you to practice with, and emails you about what to read before each lecture.
It starts out easy, but the tests and quizzes quickly become difficult. She's very helpful, but you have to do studying on your own, and you'll do fine.

hard to rate a professor who's TA teaches her classes. major disappointment.
she's absolutely amazing! very helpful and explains everything. So passionate in teaching, she really makes chem fun!
this woman is amazing. i hated chem in high school, but now i like it thanks to her... shes an awesome teacher, always wiling to help out, and most importantly she wants you to succeed. highly recommended!
If you don't have her, try to crash her course.
She is the best chem teacher at the university... if you couldn't get in her class try and crash it. Excellent at explaining and very helpful.
Well....yeah lots of work. I ended up spending about 80% of my studying time this quarter in this class because of all the practice problems. I had a 94 in the class until the final when the last two chapters were the end of me. She was on her hyper turbo mode when she explained buffers and she killed my spirit.Dropped 1B due to my discouragment
Van Koppen is a wonderful teacher, great lecturer, fair/kind person. She sends out informative e-mails every other day, and tries to make chemistry as fun as possible. She is known to give the hardest tests out of all of the chem profs, so if you are a learn-it-by-yousrself person, choose a different professor so you can get the easy test.
Great teacher. Really cares about her students (or it seems like it). I got 100% and 98% on first 2 midterms without studying much, but the last two chapters are hard and i didn't study much and I ended up with a B+ in her class. But still, she's great and does fun demonstrations to break up the monotony of chemistry.
She is great! She really cares that students learn and understand. Tests are extremely similar to practice ones she has online. Go to CLAS it helps a lot. Assignments are easy because they correspond to questions in the book and you have 10 tries to get the right answer. All the other professors are horrible. She is AMAZING!
BY FAR the best chem teacher out there - prob cuz shes the head of the dept. She lectures really well. Keeps it interesting. Is really encouraging. My only complaint is that sometimes she would assign hw problems that don't exist in the textbook nor did she ever cover. But, that was very rare and hardly makes a difference on ur grade.
Best chem teacher out there. TAKE HER IF U CAN! shes extremely nice, encouraging, and upfront and clear in lectures. only complaint is that she sometimes assigns hw problems that dont appear in the book nor did she go over in class - but this only happened very rarely nd didn't really affect my grade.
Great teacher but hard class. Material in Chem 1B is much more difficult than the material in Chem 1A. Van Koppen does a great job teaching you the material but her tests are hard and very conceptual. Very nice and fair teacher though, definitely recommend her for any chemistry class
Great professor. Fair tests and homework. Really cares about her students succeeding. Keep up with homework and you'll be fine.
She is an amazing teacher but this is a difficult course. You must put in a lot of study time to do well and attending CLAS helps also.

This whole class depends on your TA.
She is a good teacher, but I think RMP makes her seem overrated. I learned more on my own than going to lectures. My expectations were lowered after having her once now, but again, she isn't a bad teacher, just not great.
Probably the most difficult Chem 1A class, but she is the best professor. Some students sign up for different professors and attend her lectures so they can learn the material and take an easier test. She is very fair and if you have problems, go to her office hours. Even if you are good at chemistry, sign up for CLAS for extra help.
This class is no joke! She is serious about chemistry and it seems as if her life only involves chemistry. However, the first midterm was easy and so was the quiz. But the second midterm and final were hard. Some of the questions were from previous exams and Webassign. There is lots of Webassign. Take this class seriously; don't slack off!!!!!!!!!!
Van Koppen is one of the best teachers I have had here at UCSB. I wish she was teaching chem 1c next quarter!
Petrais definitely the best chem teacher at UCSB. Her tests are really fare and she gives you plenty of material to study by posting her old tests online. The class is hard, just as it will be with any prof. she really cares about her students and wants them to do well
She is a good prof who is willing to answer questions. Likes focusing on concepts which can help or kill you. If you pay attention and actually do the homework rather than looking it up, you should be fine.
good at explaining, webassign takes a long time, and midterms and final were hard. practice tests help. CLAS is useful. can count the final for 90% of grade
Super helpful and nice. Tests aren't easy, but not hard. Study and ask questions
By far the best professor I've had at UCSB. She is very helpful and she covers EVERYTHING even extra! With her, if you get a bad grade it's because you didn't do the work; it's NOT because "she is a bad professor." YOU DIDN'T STUDY!!! GO to her office hours. She helps you so much to the point that you end up understanding everything! I am serious.
SAVE YOURSELF! took this class first quarter of freshman year...if you don't mind NOT having a social life, and feel like having sudden urges to throw yourself off of storke tower because of**** loads of hmwk and bad midterm grades, then by all means--take this class. really nice/ wants you to succeed, but a HARD CLASS, also, lab's 3 hours!!!!!!
very helpful and enthusiastic. if you want to understand chemistry take her class
Van Koppen is so passionate about her class. The tests may be harder than those of other profs but I think she will give you a firmer grasp of the material. Definitely recommend her.
I'm not the best reasoning science student out there, so I'm already at a disadvantage. However, I can notice that she is a great professor and a surprisingly good teacher. She clearly tells you what is expected and needed to succeed, so any reason for failing her class is most likely due to the student. With hard work, there's no reason to fail.
If you are going to take Chemistry, then take it from her. She is the best gen chem professor at UCSB. Her final is not easy, but if you understand the material then you can work through it and get the answer.
THis proffessor is excellent. Very clear and teaches Useful tricks to help. Test are easy if you pay attention and study a LITTLE bit. Looked at the book about 3 time whole quarter and still passed with a c+.
Best professor at UCSB! Wants you to learn and succeed. If you're willing to learn she is willing to help. Lectures are great. Her tests are difficult so be sure to listen to her advice... work practice problems daily.
A really nice lady. Very passionate about what she teaches. Wants her class to succeed. Tests are pretty hard and loves to focus on concepts that get really confusing. Probably the best chem teacher at ucsb. Go to office hours will often give you more tips and tricks in order to figure out problem. USE CLAS! Eric Engel is the man.
Extremely passionate and helpful professor. The tests are fair and not too difficult if you don't get behind. Her office hours are extremely beneficial if you want to understand the material
The best Gen Chem teacher at UCSB! Goes over and beyond to help her students succeed!
Head of the Chemistry department; very enthusiastic about teaching. Tests are more difficult than other professors', but she is able to convey more difficult concepts to her students.
best chem teacher. may be a bit more difficult than other teachers, but she makes an effort to really teach you the subject. lectures are semi-interesting. just be sure to attend all of them and pay attention. she's super nice and will thoroughly answer your questions. loved the experiments in class! :] take CLAS
Good professor. genuinely love the subject that she covers. the exams are hard and tricky but the instruction is top notch!
One of the best professors I have ever met. She genuinely cares about the students and their successes in class. The tests and quizzes may be a bit challenging for multiple choicers at first, but by the end of the quarter, it becomes much easier than a written exam. Sends all her students emails before lectures to help them succeed!
Van Koppen is a great professor! Her presentation of the material is very clear and she is more than willing to help anyone that needs it! Quizzes and Exams are somewhat challenging, but Van Koppen posts old exams and quizzes online which are great for practice. I can't wait to take chem 1B with her next quarter. I highly recommend her for chem.
Great professor, very helpful always, taking her for Chem 1B now, too.
Professor Van Koppen is one of the finest lecturers I have ever come across. She is extremely helpful in office hours and via email. The material is challenging but she makes it exciting with dozens of fun and exciting demonstrations. If you have to take chem, make sure it's with her.
Van Koppen got me into chemistry. I came in dreading the fact that i had a year of chem ahead of me. go to office hours, she is smart and really helpful, plus a personal relationship helps! doing the book problems makes her class easy. 1 big tip: read the assigned text before class, making her lecture a review. best professor I've ever had.
Best chem professor, too bad she's not teaching 1C!
Best professor I have ever had. She really cares about the students and works hard so that you will learn. I am sad that I will never get to take another class with her, she really is the best. Her tests are difficult but she is so clear in her teaching that you will do well.
Pretty clear on teaching skills but her exams are extremely difficult, she also relies heavily on ALEKS so make sure you keep up with the assignments that she posts. She is not lenient at all with grading. Overall, incredibly difficult class. She's known for "weeding" out students who cannot handle the pressure of college chemistry.
She is simply one of the best professors. Specifically, she teaches the class in an engaging fashion and do sideline experiments in class to prove her point. She also teaches the class in a way that's easy to understand and also like to answer many questions.
This teacher made chemistry bearable for me which is saying something for someone who hated chemistry the first time around during HS. She is a very good teacher and very reasonable!
She was really nice, loves chemistry and loves demonstrating experiments in class. She was really awesome, and is definitely one of the easier chem teachers, but all chem is hard.
Good professor, but extremely challenging. I recommend using CLAS in order to understand the material.
go to class and follow the instructions in her emails about what to read and you'll be fine. just make sure that at the end of every week, you're caught up and where you should be. got an A- without using CLAS because I read the book. actually my grade should go up when she curves the final and the class
Great teacher. Very helpful, I recommend you go to lecture it helps a lot. Do assigned book problems and the homework and you'll do good on the tests.
She is very clear during her lectures. I had a tough quarter and did not do the assigned problems or anything extra besides CLAS and got a C. From what I can tell, her class is harder than other 1a professors', but she is a good teacher. WOULD recommend her if you're willing to work
Class is very straightforward, really basic concepts. First two midterms were extremely easy but the final was definitely a surprise. While, for the midterms you could use her past tests, for the final this would be useless as it was mainly concepts. Still it was pretty doable
Despite not liking chemistry, she made it manageable. Book problems aren't for credit, but she takes the some of the same questions and puts them on her exams.
She's awesome best chemistry teacher around. Take her and you won't regret it. Just so you know the midterms are chill. The final is HORRIBLE so yeah a heads up. But she does definitely care about her students. I mean its chemistry its supposed to be hard.
oh petra, she's awesome. quizzes are easier than midterms which are way easier than the final. do the book problems and go to her review sessions. take CLAS with eric. love petra, she's so kind. iClicker class, but all gen chem classes are. go to class, pay attention, do your aleks (even though she loves extending it). sad she isnt teaching 1c :(
Van Koppen was such a sweetheart! She is also an amazing teacher who explains everything very clearly. I never even opened my textbook and got 100% on her midterm. She really wants you to do good - GET HER.
Van Koppen is a quality teacher, her quizzes and exams are pretty easy if you pay attention in class and study. Beware of the final though. If you do well the beginning of the quarter you should definitely pass. She is really passionate about teaching and loves to help students who go to office hours and such.
Professor Van Koppen is really helpful. As long as you take her online exams you should pass. The final was extremely difficult but as long as you do well in the beginning of the course you shouldn't have trouble passing. Not an easy A.
Look, Van Koppen wants you to do well, so take advantage of that. Follow her emails and read the text book to understand the material. She only has 50 minutes in class to teach, its up to you for the rest. Very good professor.
Great professor! Extremely helpful! She made Chemistry very easy with clear lectures and emails that give you helpful practice problems. The final though is impossible (defiantly hurt my final grade). However, I recommend her for any Chemistry class!
Honestly one of the best teachers I have ever had! Hard class with a lot of work but she is so helpful and approachable! Do the text book problems for sure! And aleks is terrible...
Van Koppen is really clear in her lectures. Sends out emails before class on how to prepare for class and they are really helpful. Her tests on the other hand are the WORST, they're a slap across the face. They are the hardest tests I have ever taken and her final was insane. Great professor, but tests are ridiculous
Van Koppen is the best professor! She makes sure you understand the material and is always willing to help. Tests are difficult, but manageable if you do book problems. Definitely recommend her!
She is awesome. Her class is difficult, but she pushes you to understand the material more deeply.
Love this professor! I have never been so happy to be pushed so hard. After I took Van Koppen's class my first quarter at UCSB, I had no more second thoughts about being a chemistry major.
She's definitely one of my favorite professors, and I wish she taught Chem 1B. DEFINITELY NOT AN EASY A! I got a C in her class because I slacked off pretty hard; however, if you do the assigned homework problems like you're supposed to and do ALEKS, you'll get an A. She grades pretty leniently. Go to her office hours. READ HER EMAILS!
very good teacher, v clear and helpful
Petra is an overall great teacher. The material covered in class is somewhat basic and then the exams tend to be more applied and difficult to figure out. The final was a nightmare! The average for my class of over 400 was a 62% and the curve wasn't that steep, part of the reason for a lot of grade drops, like myself. Study and do book problems.
She was one of the best teachers I have ever had. Her classes were always engaging, and made it easy to develop a strong liking for chemistry. Her tests were very fair, especially if you practiced. She makes it very easy to pass, and even get an A.
I felt that Van Koppen's class was a good, challenging course. She sends out a lot of emails with work that you can constantly be doing... and I regret not having done more of the recommended questions. That is the key to success in her class along with getting help early on. CLAS is a great tool, but office hours were mildly helpful as well.
Lab completely depends on your TA. I had Andrew Cook. He was pretty cool, fair grader. Things to note: lab reports will be due 3 days after lab at 4pm, so keep that in mind when choosing a time. Also if you have lab 12-2:30, it can get tricky to get food because dining commons close at 2:30. I had class until 11 (dlghuge line) and ort was closed
Her class is incredibly stressful. She emails practice problems on things she hasn't even begun to cover yet, and expect you to have a full understanding of them by the time you come to class. She skips over basic concepts, focuses on complex things that you will never see in the real world. Her demonstrations can be fun, but her class is useless.
Chem 1B is the hardest course out of the chem series. Make sure you read the book and go to CLAS. She extends ALEKS due dates frequently, but make sure you do it anyway. Teaches very closely to Price.
She likes to derive equations using calculus, but she's also very straight-forward regarding what the student needs to know/memorize. Her tests are mainly based on what she discusses in class. I-Clickers will help you grade. Don't underestimate the quizzes. If you really have no other choice and need to skip, read the book in detail.
petra is nice but very serious and a tough grader. Her tests are difficult as well.
Labs are not useful, long and uninteresting.
Very patient at her office hours
Participating in the Learning Assistant (LA) program with Prof. van Koppen has been the best academic experience I've had at UCSB so far. Petra is very caring and approachable, and is always willing to take feedback from TAs and students alike. I'd recommend the LA program to anyone who enjoys teaching and chemistry.
Granny Petra is amazing. definitely an eye candy. I get distracted by her look in lecture all the time. She's like the loml. *Heart-eyed emoji inserted here*
-CHEM 1AL should really not vary in difficulty based on the TA you get. -A good number of TAs are difficult graders and take of easy points for little mistakes % the lost points really do add up & hurt your grade. -Don't rely on the curve -On the flip side, quizzes and tests should be easy if you are on top of it and easier than CHEM 1A. -READ!
As the gen chem lab series goes on (from A to C) her explanations of the labs get worse and worse. Once you get to Chem 1CL don't expect to learn anything from reading the manual because she doesn't explain anything you need to know for the pre-lab or review questions. I'm sorry you poor confused souls who have to take her lab course.
i hate her
Petra is a good person, but sometimes the labs were unnecessarily specific. Plus, your grade is totally dependent upon who your TA is. I was blessed with a normal grading TA, but I knew others that were totally wrecked by their TA. Also, this quarter, the lab final had a TON of questions that were NOT on the study guide.
It all depends on your TA. Mine was super chill so I liked the class. Lab reports make up most of your grade so if you do well on those and score alright on the quizzes and final then you'll pass. If you want an A, study the lab manual before class and you're basically guaranteed an A. Disclaimer: I actually like chem so it may be different for you
Although she doesnt grade any your HW, she designs all the experiments which are useless and took more than 5hours to do the HW. Besides, this course shouldnt be a 2credits class!
no one ever meets her, but the final is hella hard. Be ready to study a ton, but it may not even help
You dont actually get to meet her really, you just have a TA. I absolutely loved my TA and LA and they were super chill so I loved this class, but Ive had friends with not great TAs and they hated it so it all really depends on what TA you get. Final is harder than the exam questions.
The TA teaches the class and some grade much harder than others. UCSB doesn't give the option of taking anyone else so you just have to try and get lucky with your TA. Also be prepared to do hours and hours of homework for yours labs. On average I spent 10-15 a week. But I'm also not very good at chem, so it depends on you.
She wouldn't even cancel classes for the coronavirus when the entire campus was closed! Clearly did not care about student's health whatsoever. TA's teach the class and she simply writes the textbooks to make money off of them, and you can't resell them because it changes every year.
Very poor professor, labs are poorly set up and TA's grade lab-work extremely ungenerously
This class is more work than gen chem but youre kinda forced to take it since theres literally no other profs. Youre forced to buy ridiculously written textbooks made by Petra. The classes are inconsistent based on the TA you get since the textbook doesnt help and you need to constantly ask for clarification. Communication sucks good luck buddy
Super vague grading rubrics, unnecessarily difficult quizzes, and assignments are almost never returned on time/are graded very harshly. It's only a 2 unit class but I genuinely spent more time on it than any of my 4/5 unit classes. You are also required to buy the poorly written textbook and corresponding lab manual.
online class. too much work for a 2 unit class. a lot of requirements per assignment. you have to show a lot of work for very little points. also makes you buy her book which she changes every year. ta was nice
She gives pretty good lectures and appears passionate about the subject, but I have two problems with her class. 1. Unintuitive, unclear, and messy grading rubrics. 2. Labs, although not necessarily hard, are quite long. It takes me 7 hrs each week for the labs consistently get an A avg, and will probably take longer if you've not taken AP Chem.
The Chem 1AL course is pretty hard. Honestly, it was harder than regular Chem 1A. It's 2 units and a lab, but I've spent more time on this class than any other.
The professor seems very passionate and the lectures are fine. However, the class is 2 UNITS but I spend more time for this class than any other class that gives more credits which is sad. You need to watch long lecture videos, take hard quizzes, write a lab report, pre-lab, and do reading every week for this class. Seriously so time consuming .
For online lab you only see prof once a week in a 30 min video, you'll mostly be depending on your TA, and most of them are really happy to help you and friendly. No one has much of a choice of if they want to take this class or not but beware for only 2 credits it is a LOT of work. Make sure you study your lab before you take your quizzes!
LOLLLLLLLL I CHANGE MY MIND!!!! SHE IS AWFUL! THE FINAL INCLUDED SO MANY QUESTIONS THAT WE NEVER EVEN WENT OVER IN CLASS. RIP. PRAYING FOR A CURVE.
Dr Van Koppen is super knowledgeable and has an amazing passion for what she does. I will say that they credit this class a lot lower than it should be, as multiple hours will go into each lab report and the concepts are not easy. They are curved however, so as long as you are doing around the average of your section, you should be okay!

I got a solid 5/10 on the final because it made no sense. My ta is a gem but who cares considering my test average is a striking 20% bc they are unnecessarily difficult. I should be getting a 96% in this class but the tests have ruined that. Not to mention we're in a pandemic and there is no compensation for having to learn everything on our own.
I think if the lab class was done in person, everyone would have learned more, but given the conditions we all had to adapt and I think Van Koppen was really organized in a lot of aspects. The quizzes throughout the quarter were fairly easy, but the last quiz, supposedly the "final" featured questions that have never been seen before.
No mercy for students struggling through this online class. She doesn't accommodate students from different time zones, and she's a tough grader. Quizzes are mostly free response so it's either right or wrong. The review quiz was very misleading. Everything she said to review for was barely on the quiz. Also forced us to buy her lab manual.
your success in her class depends on if you get a good TA or not. Inconsistent grading with the TAs which makes her course extremely unfair. Some students get an easy A while others barley get a C because they have nitpicky TAs. Material on quizzes was never even taught in the course. Praying there's a curve or else that's just not fair to students
I just got a 10% on the review quiz. I literally studied so hard and it was useless! The fact that so many people failed her quizzes and she still doesn't help or give out answer explanations shows how much she doesn't care about students.
Dr. Van Koppen is a very knowledgeable and passionate proffesor. Although the course is only 2 units, I did spend a lot of time on my work. However, the grading was straightforward and the labs are worth a lot more than quizzes. She is very kind through email and in-office hours. Not a difficult A if you work hard.
I don't have enough characters to adequately describe the absolute embarrassment that was Chem 1CL in F20. Making labs online is tough, but these guys made it so much worse than it had to be that it almost felt like they were doing it on purpose. The only reason you'd take this is for your major, which means you can't avoid it; I'm sorry, good luck
all the online quizzes were easy , but that review quiz... what a joke to pull during a crisis, deliberately attempting to fail us without giving the necessary preparations . i mean at least the curve will be heavily skewed in our favor now
The quizzes are easy enough to do and the lab reports are easy enough to write. But this class is definitely really time consuming for only a 2 unit class.
Her lectures didn't really cover the quiz material at all, it's up to you to study and put work in yourself. This class was so much unnecessary work for 2 units, all my homework was basically from this class, not to mention lab reports were around6-8 pages. The review quiz was terrible though. If you have a good TA you'll be fine.
Lab reports were really time-consuming. Lectures were decent but it didn't always cover lab quiz content. Quizzes were fine as long as you're also taking Chem 1A but the last review quiz was terrible. As long as you have a reasonable TA you'll be fine.
this is more of a review of chem1al than van koppen(her vids are ok tho), since the only interaction is basically with your TA(pray for a fair one)! definitely a lot of work for a 2 credit class, but if you have chem1a knowledge the quizzes shouldn't be that bad and the lab reports have a clear grading criteria so just be sure to follow it exactly.
Not too bad of a class, but quizzes every week were definitely harder than I thought. Lab and Pre-Lab due every week, but the way they are graded depends on your TA. I got lucky and got a great TA so it wasn't too bad.
The class was okay, the lab reports were easy enough to write, but very time consuming for only a 2 unit class, and the review quiz was ridiculous, there were so many questions on there that I've never seen, I'm passing this class only cuz of my TA. There are weekly quizzes that are manageable, but you do have to spend some time studying for them.
I loved this class. Professor Van Koppen is very nice and approachable. The class is overall pretty easy but the lab reports can be a little time consuming. Overall, I really enjoyed the class.
There is a pre-lab and a lab every week. If you are not a chem major or have never done chem before, get ready to be very confused. Get on the discord group for help from other students asap if you can. This class is a lot of work and was the reason I changed my major to have less chem. All depends on how your TA grades.
The class is really a TA-driven course, as the TA leads the class and delivers lectures. The quizzes are pretty typical and not too difficult, but there definitely are a lot of lab assignments that require some time to do. The grading was tough because standards have to be kept across the sections, but overall it's a class that I would take again.
Lectures and labs are recorded. Class really just depends on your TA as the TA grades your lab reports and you meet with TA for a discussion once a week. Each week a prelab, lab report and quiz are due. WAY MORE WORK THAN 2 UNIT CLASS!
Petra is a solid professor. She's readily available outside of class and she also answers all your questions, even if some of the questions are graded questions. Overall, she's very helpful, and if you have grading issues, you can always email her, and chances are that she'll be on your side. Def more work than a 2 unit class, however.
Tests are insanely disproportionate in difficulty compared to what is taught; much of my final was things I hadn't learned yet. TAs lead sections but its a hit or miss, some explain concepts and others skim past them. Online schooling meant my peers and I were left struggling to stay afloat in this 2 credit course.
She grades unnecessarily hard, and makes the grading for labs unclear and excessive. This class is way too much work for 2 credits. She has been the worst professor I have had during online learning, it's like she wants her students to do poorly despite working very hard on the labs. I wouldn't take this class if I didn't need it for my major.
Not super hard but each lab is a lot of work. Every week a pre-lab, lab report, and quiz are due. Each pre-lab and lab report takes several hours. :( Grading depends on how tough your TA is.
Your grade LITERALLY depends on your TA. For Chem 1AL my TA was great and also didn't grade too harshly, the averages on labs were 80% and up. This quarter my TA is EXTREMELY STRICT like the lab report grades are about 50-60%. Completely ridiculously.
This is a review for 1BL (course code unavailable). Not a hard class if you pay attention and don't mind writing up tedious lab reports. HOWEVER, she keeps removing the lab rubric from the course website and editing them AFTER THE LAB HAS ALREADY BEEN INTRODUCED. To add insult to injury, she doesn't even tell us about the updates.
She is inspiring and really cares that you understand the material. The labs are from a manual she wrote and she 100% knows her stuff. Great attitude, seems really interested in what she's teaching. She wants you to succeed and get interested in chemistry. There are weekly meetings, assignments and quizzes but expectations are clear + manageable.
Grade completely depends on TA. Had a pretty nice TA fall quarter, passed with a B. Winter quarter, TA grades super harsh, even took off points for not putting the degree sign when talking about degrees C. Quizzes are not too difficult, and I do recommend going to office hours if you have questions because they walk you through the problems.
The class itself is not too bad but the problem is that Petra often removes the lab rubric and REEDITS them after the lab has been introduced. Sometimes she doesn't even inform us of this. So for my lab report, I was missing sections that were not EVEN mentioned in the rubric I had and lost points.
The class wasn't really taught by her; everything kinda depends on your TA. Honestly, this isn't a hard class. You just have to read the rubric extremely carefully if you want to excel in this class. The quizzes aren't too bad either.
This class is immensely difficult even if you get a good TA. Manageable but I wouldn't add this class to your schedule if you have other challenging classes. Zoom is required even though it would be more appropriate recorded.
Depends on your TA and how you perform on quizzes. Besides the quizzes, you also have to watch lectures, complete 2 labs, and go to section meetings each week. This was very time consuming but, with effort, you can succeed. I only had a few conversations with the professor and she seemed very kind and caring as she helped me with issues with my TA.

The lectures themselves were easy to understand. here comes the bad part: VERY LITTLE guidance and clarity given on the labs themselves, lack of clarity on the rubrics and organization is basically nonexistent. Conflicting information coming from the lectures, personal office hours, and from the TAs. Very disorganized, unhelpful for online!!
Your grade really depends on your TA. Each TA I had each quarter varied A LOT. But the most annoying thing was the fact that Petra would sometimes change the GRADING RUBRIC and wouldn't say anything. I lost a couple of points for not having something on my lab report even though it wasn't mentioned in the version I had downloaded.
Terrible transition to online. labs are very confusing, w/ vague rubrics and inconsistent grading styles from different TAs. Learning online makes it very difficult to understand what is being taught. A 20 min lecture, a lab video, and section per week doesnt mirror an in-person experience at all, yet the expectations are just as strenuous.
I don't understand at all how this is a 2 unit class. Each week, you have to watch lecture & experiment videos, write lab report+review questions, write a pre-lab for the next lab and take a 40-minute quiz. I spend MUCH MORE TIME on this than my 4 or 5 unit classes.
Online labs suck, but what really sucks is if you get a terrible TA in this course. The rubric is not clear & includes so many details, it's impossible to cover them all without going over page limits. If you get a nice TA, you're lucky. Wish I switched sections because mine sucks & now I'm probably getting a C.
I love Dr. van Koppen. She is so kind and accessible. Her grading is very straightforward and her rubrics are extremely clear. Despite taking this series online, I learned a lot and feel prepared for in person labs. I do recommend choosing a good TA and if anything feels off, contact Dr. Van Koppen ASAP. Not hard to get an A if you work hard.
I never actually met Professor Van Kopek face to face, but her lectures were clear and straightforward, and the grading criteria was well established from the beginning. The quizzes are hard, but once you get the hang of the wording and style, good grades are attainable. Would definitely take Van Koppen again.
Lab reports make up most of your grade. They are time consuming, and if you have a TA that grades strictly, make sure you are very detailed and attend office hours for help (you do not want to miss easy points). Study previous quiz/review/pre-lab questions before quizzes. Quizzes can be tough, don't underestimate them! Grading policies are strict.
Rudest professor I've ever encountered. There was a mistake in the grading system on one of my larger assignments, and Professor Van Koppen was extremely rude and still didn't give me ANY points on my assignment because my work "didn't deserve any points anyways", even though it did because I spent 6 hours on it. She only cares about research :) .
I like her as a person because you can tell she knows what she's talking about, planned the lectures well, and wrote a pretty great, thorough lab manual. But this class needs to be more than 2 units. It takes probably over 5 hours weekly, not including the 3 hour 50 minute lab section and the 40 minute quiz.
