He was a good teach but he sometimes not explain things correctly which is sometimes confusing but if you don't understand something he will help you.
He's really nice and is willing to help one-on-one. He also reviews what will be covered on the test before you take it on JExam.
He does not care if you come to class or not, gives some points for test if you do certain homework problems, but does not cover sufficient material. He also messes up in class alot, first time though... Overall, hes understandable and will help, not too bad
Phil is a great precalc teacher. He teaches you exactly what is on the JExam tests and goes to great lengths to make sure you understand it, but he does often make mistakes while teaching. If you come to class, study his notes, and do the JExam practice tests, then you will get an A. Overall, a fairly easy class.
Great Lab teacher. Always willing to help people when they get stuck. Very fair grader.
Phil's a great teacher. He makes some small mathematical errors, such as addition and subtraction, but he knows his Calculus. He gives opportunity for extra credit and holds review sessions before tests. He's always willing to answer questions and help in any way possible. Highly recommended!
has to be the best LAB instructer. for the LAB, he makes projects on the computer system, MAPLE, easy! you will do these projects every other week. on the other week, he devotes class to student's questions that they are having in their regular class.
Phil is an awesome guy. He even has facebook! Just kidding, but in all seriousness he's extremely helpful and understanding. Just be sure not to miss the quizzes because I kinda missed a couple. Still got an A!
Math is scary but this guy is amazing. My favorite person in the world. Greatest teacher ever. andheiscute.
TAMALE!!
good.
awesome teacher! do the practice quizzes online and its easy!!
sucks
I enjoyed Phil's class a lot. He teaches you exactly what you need to know to excel in his class. If you show up to class, take notes, and do j-exam practice problems then you are set to make a good grade in the class. To me the textbook was not necessary and I should never have bought it. He is easy to listen to and teaches the material well.
I ended up withdrawing from this class because it was too fast-paced for someone who hasn't taken math in over 2 years. Phil was a great teacher though, very nice and extremely helpful. He was also very understanding when I withdrew. If you're ready for pre-calc, he is your man!
Phil is great! The course sucks because of J-Exam, but Phil tries to make it as easy as possible. He uses worksheets in class that mirror the problems on J-Exam. If you don't do well on the test, he'll walk you through it in office hours to see what you did wrong and will often award points back if you just made a careless error. Highly recommend.
Phil is hands down the worst teacher I have ever had. He is impossible to follow, probably because he doesn't know what or why he is doing something. He scribbles aimlessly, then grunts, erases half of it, then moves on to the next problem. He is incredibly adept at making simple problems seem complicated and vague. Save yourself the pain & trouble
really laid back
Excellent teacher, very laid back. I understood almost everything he taught. I am not a good math student at all but did well in his class. He does move a little fast, so it helps to have taken calculus in high school. Either way, I would recommend him.
Phil is hands down an awesome teacher!!! His class was a lot of fun. He is super helpful and will try different ways to help you understand what you are doing. Highly recommended! Oh, he wants to call him Phi!!!
Phil is great. He's young and tons of fun. You can ask him ANYTHING and he will always help you out (and he genuinely wants to help you). I really enjoyed him, and I pulled off a B in the class.
I definitely recommend Phil for Calculus. I was really scared of taking it at UGA, but Phil is really laid back, gives you opportunities to boost your grade with homework presentations and easy quizzes, and works a lot of examples in class. Don't be intimidated to go to office hours; he is so helpful and will give hints about the test!
Tests are very challenging but he is a nice guy and very laid back. He also speaks perfect English which is a plus- especially in the math department!
He makes the class a lot easier. Gives chances to gain extra points on tests. He is very helpful and will answer any question. Take him!!!!
take my word- if you have to take calculus, TAKE PHIL. calculus is hard, but he explains everything really well. anyone who tells you differently is lazy and didn't make enough effort in the class. study for the one question quizzes, sometimes they come right off of his notes, and they can really boost your grade. and he DOES NOT have an accent.
Phil was a good man! Really did alot for us...webassign SUCKS!
Phil is a great professor. He teaches using examples.Coming to class everyday isn't mandatory but if you want to make a great grade it really helps. He is super nice and helpful and tries to teach at his best. If you naturally learn then you don't have to go to class. homework isn't mandatory. It's a hard class in general but he teaches really well.
I have nothing but praise for him. Easily one of my favorite teachers because of his pretyped out notes and teaching style. The notes that he handed out were a fantastic outline, but we still needed to fill in the rest of the information(like the examples). He spoke very clearly, had neat handwriting, and made sure everyone understood each concept.
He was an exceptional professor. Before every class he gives you typed notes as an outline (which are great to study for his test). In class he works out multiple examples for you. If you ask him for help he goes above and beyond to make sure you understand. If you can fit him into your schedule definitely do it.
I took Phil at 8:00 a.m. 4 days a week. It was worth it. Calculus is hard, but Phil made it fun. He doesn't take attendance but there's group work once a week. He gives you printed lecture notes every day. The tests & final were on paper & not too difficult if you study hard and don't slack off. He's also a fair grader. Made an A!
He is an excellent teacher. He has typed notes everyday and weekly quizzes that are super easy. If you go to class and take notes, the class while be a breeze! Make sure you study a couple days in advance for the test and he is VERY willing to help you if you don't understand. I DEFINITELY recommend him!
Great!
If you understand math, you will get very bored in this class as he explains everything much to thorougly. But if you have questions, he is really not very good at helping, and will sometimes give you short one word answers that don't help at all. He is very clear during class though, and I would consider having him as a teacher in the future.
Bergonio is the best pre-cal teacher! I had trouble keeping up with the pace at the beginning but caught on and started making A's. My advice to study: his class notes, homework and the quizes will help you make an easy A! His class notes are very thorough. and he uses colorful chalks which help alot for note taking.
Bergonio is an AWESOME teacher! He explains everything very thoroughly. If you write down everything in class and redo all the problems on the worksheets he gives you, the Webassign homework, quizzes, and tests are a breeze.
Best teacher I've had by far. Take advantage of his office hours. I didn't until the day of the final, but even then he made sure that each question I had got answered. He makes some simple mistakes in lecture, but students do a good job checking his work over. By all means take him.
He is incredibly helpful and kind. I had some medical problems and was not able to make two test days because of an long ongoing illness. Regardless, he was very helpful and worked with me throughout the semester. I cares about what he does and that shows. I thoroughly recommend him.
Worst Math Teacher, No,but is by far is not close to being a good teacher either. Much better for PreCalc--- DO NOT TAKE CALC WITH HIM. Most other teachers give practice exams for the tests and are super easy. Sure he is nice enough and gives unhelpful notes but, lectures poorly. He just writes useless proofs and makes many errors during lecturs
Take someone else. He does not explain things in the best of ways.
He was really helpful throughout the course. He was always available when you needed him, and he has office hours on the day before the test also. I attended all these, and got help on the harder problems for the homework. I him for both 1113 and 2250. Tests are pretty straight forward, and most all the problems on the tests you HAVE seen before.
Was i great teacher!!
was a great teacher!!
do not take this professor. He was rude, horrible at teaching, rushed through the material, and completely inconsiderate. I DO NOT RECOMMEND.
He was a great professor if you let him be. Some people thought he flew by, but if you asked him to explain something he did every time. Very nice guy, awesome class.
Definitely just an ok teacher. In lectures, he rushes through content, but if you actually want to understand, go to his office hours or use Study Edge to learn it on a more basic level. Study edge explains things hilariously/easily so I def recommend watching their videos for PreCalc.
Phil is a great teacher! He walks through all the steps and although the class moves quickly, he is always available to help during office hours.
Best math professor you will ever encounter. It's very clear that he is a subject matter expert and will go to enormous lengths to help students who have questions. He is very patient and genuinely loves the subject he teaches. I wish I had a professor like him for every class. I'd recommend him to any student who wants to learn.
Bergonio teaches one of the hardest freshman courses in the books, but he does it with flying colors. If you have to take Pre-Calculus then take it from Phil. He has been, by far, the best math teacher i have ever had. MAKE USE OF HIS OFFICE HOURS. No matter what you do this class will be hard but having a good teacher like him makes a difference.
I've never taken anything higher than Algebra and passed this class with a B. I had to work at it, but if someone that bad @ math can pass you can too! He is very friendlyhelpful during office hours if you don't understand something. class seems a bit rushed sometimes, slow him down if you are getting behind. Tests are based of quizzes.
Bergonio is probably the best teacher I've taken in a while! He is very helpful during office hours! He takes time to explain everything! If you want to do good, I definitely recommend him! GO TO OFFICE HOURS!
Probably the best Pre-Calc teacher at UGA. Doesn't take homework for a grade, its really just for your own practice based on how much you need for each unit. His office hours are extremely helpful. Doubtful you will fail with him if you do everything he tells you to.
So Bergonio is the best precalc teacher. Take him! optional homework as well. no textbook required.
He gives help on all the quizzes and tests. There are in class quizzes that count for your participation and online quizzes allow you at least a week to complete. Study groups and office hours will help a lot. Homework was not graded for this professor.
You will not regret taking Phil for Calc 1. He really wants his students to do well. Make sure you brush up on pre-calc before this class. He lectures and there is group work as well. Daily quizzes too. Going to class is SO important. Overall one of the best professors I've had at UGA.
I really struggled with this class because I never had calculus in high school, but Dr. Bergonio went above and beyond to help me. He was regularly willing to meet with me outside office hours to help me with homework and studying. I have super respect for him.
I have pretty bad dyslexia, so math-based classes have always been difficult for me. Mr. Berognio is the first professor that has effectively taught me mathematical concepts. He initially seems blunt, but he's really dedicated to helping students. If a student isn't doing well in his class, its on them. His tests and quizzes are very fair.
I took Prof Bergonio's online precal class and he was super confusing and wasn't accessible. The tools (blackboard collaborate, webassign, and proctorU) we used were not user-friendly and he wasn't really any help when I needed help. wouldn't recommend taking him or precal online.
Talks kinda fast but if you ask him questions on the side hes really good at explaining things
Its an online class so you have to have initiative. However, if you put the time in and attend the study sessions you will get a solid grade. I was on the fringe line and was given the higher grade because of this attendance. I would definitely take this over regular precal
i have no idea why his rating is so high. every class was just him doing examples in his notebook. extremely unhelpful. if you had a question, he would respond as if you were dumb. he does not care either way if his students fail or do well. i would avoid him if possible. he made my first semester in college the worst.
literally the hardest class i have ever taken. he ins't a very helpful professor and he really doesn't care if you do well. he judged me the entire time i was struggling and i ended up withdrawing. he caters the entire class to the few students who were retaking it and knew what was going on, which made it really difficult for the other students.
Do not trust the reviews! Teaches heavy on specific examples and little on the concept. The majority of the class will be only answering examples with little to no stopping to explain in between. Everything just seems rushed each day in class. He basically tells you how to do problems without thoroughly teaching you how to.
Not a good teacher. This professor will get frustrated if you do not understand what he is talking about. Calculus 1 should not have been this difficult. I taught myself most everything in this class because the lectures lacked meaning. Please do yourself a favor and look for another teacher.
If you're not good at math he is not the professor for you. His attitude is not the best and he makes you feel dumb if you have questions. He was very rude to my classmate after she had a question. He knows Calculus but does not know how to teach. He speaks fast in lectures and at times didn't even explain how he got solutions unless asked.
do not recommend. he does not engage with the students at all. he just stands at the board and does practice problems for the entirety of the class, and doesn't ask students questions or if they understand what he is doing. goes super fast and does not explain anything! he also is condescending and laughs and scoffs when students ask questions.
His biggest downfall is that he is socially awkward, so sometimes when you ask him questions he can't give great answers. But that doesn't mean he isn't a good professor. He explains things very thoroughly and gives practice tests that are almost exactly like the test. He is also a more than fair grader, and gives out tons of info on grading.
For starters, do not take this class if you are not good at math. It seems obvious, but this class requires far more work online than in person and is far less forgiving. I do not really have an opinion of the teacher since I had him online, but there is a lot of work and the test are not forgiving. If I were you, take this class in person.
If given the opportunity to take this class again, I would not take it online personally. He's an okay professor, but you have very few opportunities to learn the material. The worst part about the class to me though was how his online lectures were always a week or two ahead of the material due, so if you fell behind it was hard to catch up.
The class was difficult and had a lot of homework, but if you study the homeworks adequately, the tests are pretty easy. He was always quick to respond and I liked how his online classes always went over actual homework questions. I also liked how he and Professor Arnold worked together and held separate classes that we were able to attend.
He is very disrespectful to students. Don't take him if you like passing,
does not answer questions, hard to understand. more than half the class had to drop at midterm
DONT take him for pre-calc please! he makes you memorize all formulas and makes the class harder then necessary. This class made me hate calculus because he gives so much homework, quizzes, and tests. He comes off as passive-aggressive and demeaning when asking for help. Don't take this professor.
Math 1101 is a really easy class and he was a nice professor. The class was always recorded on zoom and posted for the entire year. He did a great job at answering questions in class, on zoom, and through email. He also always had a class that was devoted to answering homework questions before we had to turn them in. I really enjoyed his class.
This was required for my major & to manage my workload with in-person classes and this was by far the worst choice I could've made for my GPA and mental health. He assigns 3-4 homework sets PER WEEK, makes us do a quiz a day BEFORE tests, and tests are more difficult than the homework & quizzes, and NO EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITIES, DO NOT TAKE HIM!!
This was the easiest class I have had at UGA. There was a recorded zoom option so I did not have to go to class at all until the exams. There was also an optional final at the end of the course. The homework and quizzes were easy and so were the exams. I did not have to do a lot of studying to get an A in this class. Take this class.
Do not take Math1113E with him. Pre-calculus is not hard but his tests were impossible. Not even doing the 150 practice problems over and over again will help you pass. Do not take this class or withdraw before its too late.
Bergonio is the worst teacher I have had at UGA. He is so rude when answering questions, and is useless during office hours (He also teaches the material wrong half the time and has to go back and correct himself the next day). Whatever you do do not take him for any math.
Even though its an online class that is at your discretion, he has DAILY assignments that take up so much time and barely follow the information he teaches. He also has an online platform to ask questions, but when you do, a lot of the time his answer is to look back at the slides. No extra credit, redos, or leniency in grading. TAKE ANYONE ELSE!!
To me, he did a lot to try to help his students. Class isn't mandatory so he posts the notes on elc and then during test time he posts a video of him doing practice problems. He does give a good bit of homework and they are harder than the test but I recommend doing them asap. I think the class isn't bad if you actually try.
If you value your mental health, DO NOT take him. Students had to correct him several times during class. He's not helpful when you ask questions. When I came up to him and asked about help he told me "not right now". I had to drop the class because there was no way I could pass. The university really needs evaluate the math department.
I took gifted precalc and calc in high school with no problems. I though this would be an easy class, but found it incredibly difficult for no reason. he was rude and did not explain how he got answers to any problems. If you are not a math person, DO NOT TAKE. He is cold to students and does not make it seem like he cares if you succeed.
Could talk you to sleep any day of the week. Very boring to listen to, doesn't really seem to care about students and often needs corrections.
He is not the most personable person and the lectures can be boring, but this class is not that hard. If you pay attention and actually do the homework, you'll be fine. There are online homeworks do every week, but I feel lie the homework is what helps me learn the most. Class isn't mandatory at all.
Genuinely awful. His lectures were boring and all of the information was read from slides on ELC. I took the class for about a month before withdrawing because I had corrected his work in class 4 times. He was not personable at all, and tutoring wasn't helpful. If you don't already know 100% of the course information, I would not take this class.
At first I did not like this class or him. The first unit is hard but once you get the basics of the calculator down it's easy. He does a great job of posting videos and materials that make it easy to understand what you don't know. I stoped going to class the second half because it got so easy I could learn it on my own. For UGA math its easy.
I definitely recommend taking pre calc online with Professor Bergonio. He was very accessible via email and posted lots of helpful videos. I dropped from the in person one because the graduate assistants suck and taking it online is the way to go.
I am not a math person like AT ALL. I struggled in elementary stats to give you an idea. But I still found this class relatively easy. He posts the annotated notes after class. And gives a Hw assignment (not tedious) for every topic. This class is VERY calculator heavy and tests are timed, in person. So make sure you remember all the key strokes.
Math 1101 should be an easy, introductory course. After all it is not a prerequisite for anything, just a basic credit. He made this uncessarly difficult. Tests weigh very heavily. They're in person on paper and always different from practice tests or homework so you better understand the concepts. Would not recommend this class if you want easy.
He did not teach well. all he did in class was do problems in front of you. questions in the tests and final exam were nothing like the ones on the review he gave out. he does not give a clear idea of what will be on tests and does not offer extra credit. content is easy but he makes it hard. do not take him if u want an easy math class.
I believe this class was a bit difficult for no reason. Graded on homework, 4 tests, and a final exam. I used tutoring, study groups, given study materials from the professor, and worked on my own to help myself throughout the class and still passed with a C+(wanted an A). The professor seemed unapproachable and lectures/class is calculator heavy.
i was a little nervous because he straight lectures and it can be super boring and a little tough BUT he curved my grade up from a c+ to a b- at the end of the semester and was SO nice
Professor Bergonio teaches pretty fast so it can be hard to grasp content within the class period. He can come across as intimidating but he does genuinely care for his students and does his best to assist them with the content. However the course itself is difficult, and the final was 10x harder than the other tests (and was weighted heavily).
Phil Bergonio is one of the best professors I have taken. He clearly explains every concept. All you have to do is pay attention in class and do your homework. Give it your best throughout the semester so you do not have to depend on the final because the Calculus final average is usually around 65%. Overall I do recommend taking Phil's Calculus.
Although the content itself can be challenging, Phil does a great job explaining topics thoroughly. He is straightforward and his expectations for the class are clear. I recommend taking his class if you need face to face instruction/lecture.
He makes sure everyone understands what is being discussed in class and makes clear how we should answer the homework exercises and exams in order to get full credit. There's a lot of homework but they aren't that hard, and he allows students to do the lecture sets outside of class, as long as they submit them in time.
If you want to learn math... maybe take a different professor. He's such a BAD TEACHER because HE DOESN'T TEACH. rude in emails as well... hard pass
Very boring lectures and very rude when "helping" students. No extra credit in this class so keep that in mind because other calc 1 professors here offer extra credit. Also makes mistakes so many times and the notes online are not always correct because of that. You can definitely find an easier professor for this class. He just can not teach well.
i would recommend registering for a different prof if you have the opportunity. i took ap calc in highschool and had a tough grading teacher, and my final grade was a 98. i was fighting literal demons while taking this class. prof didnt teach, he just did problems on the board and rarely spoke. he was rude in some cases. don't take
The course itself can be challenging. Each exam included opportunities for extra points based on the class average, sometimes up to five points. I finished the course with an overall average of over 99%. If you keep up with the lectures and consistently review the material, I believe earning an A is absolutely achievable
