He was very enthusiastic about teaching, over whelming at some points. I would take him again!
Really enthusiastic teacher, but tests were difficult and book was not helpful.
Tests were never directly aligned to lectures or book materials.
Very difficult, slightly spastic in lecture. He views his role as weeding people out. No partial credit on tests.
Extremely difficult class, in a lecture so large it is difficult to follow. Teacher is very enthusiastic, but tests tend not to be clear, and do not closly match what is worked in class.
The man likes to talk about wangs.
Difficult. Lecture was amusing...at times, but yes-very spastic.
this man is insane. he YELLS the lectures, and if you sit in the front row, you'll get spat on and see the veins in his neck about to burst. his exams need to be curved at least 40 points because they're so difficult. go to him for extra help and he tells you to change your major to something that doesn't require organic.
He is some sort of hotshot dean and does not teach very often. Doesn't make much time for students; weeds people out instead of trying to help them out; and uses that Wertz textbook, which is terrible---as bad as Wertz himself. Brown is filling in, I think...his heart os not in this. Not a great teacher exemplar at all for a new freshman here.
very enthusiastic during lectures, i am sure that if you went and took notes every day you could do ok in this class but otherwise youll probably fail
Extremely enthusiastic, spastic, and humorous during lecture. Provides relevant information from is his vast knowledge of chemistry and its applications. Tests are very tricky and difficult. Curves an average of 10-15 points per test. Always willing to help after class or during office hours. Great at explaining topics. Studying recommended.
Best organic professor I have ever had; he explained things that my organic I professors couldn't get to me. I really actually enjoyed organic 2 and would take any class he has to offer. Tests are not difficult if you pay attention in class and do the homework. Absolutely awesome.
He is a horrible professor. It is pointless to even go to lecture. You pretty much have to teach yourself for the class. He yells a lot and tells random stories that don't even apply to chemistry, but that is the only thing you will remember.
He tries hard to get the message across but his teaching methods are awful. He posts no notes or study guides. He's enthusiastic about chemistry but can't explain things well. He's a good person but terrible teacher. class test average was a 26 so he curved 20-30 pts.
He's not that bad of a teacher, webassigns arent too bad, but his tests are ridiculous and theres not really any good way to prepare for them. Luckily he curves like a mad man, usually 20-30 points on each test plus a final grade curve. Take his class if you want to pass.
Awesome professor and he gives great curves on the tests. Be sure to actually attend class because he sometimes gives out hints for the test.
pb is A GREAT guy. He's really nice, and funny. However, I found his lectures to be rather ineffective. Go to class every day, though, because sometimes he will reveal a test question.
He was most definitely an expert in chemistry. However he was a horrible teacher in that he did not know how to explain things clearly and he jumped all over the place in his lectures. His tests were extremely difficult but he did give good curves.
PB is an awesome guy. He is a good teacher if you pay attention and buy into his system. I had to use the book alot because he is kinda spastic. His tests are hard but just read the book and know your stuff and you should be able to stay ahead of the curve. ps this dude should have been a stand up comedian
Knows his stuff, but cant break it down for students trying to learn. His lectures are sporatic, he can cover two chapters in 50 minutes. But when you go to study the chapters it all seems like new material, and then the test questions are nothing like what he teaches or what the book teaches. Don't take if possible, if you think ch is hard
He was not helpful at all because he didnt have any practice problems, just his one example in class and his tests were impossible. He was very excited and cheerful to teach but the way he went about teaching this course was absurd, should of assigned extra practice problems to help out. Either you get it or you don't in his class.
Brown is a good teacher contrary to what a lot of students say. He is definitely spastic but if you take good notes in and out of class (more out than in) you will be fine. He gives large curves (25 pts on one of my tests) so, if you tend to stay ahead of the class anyway he will give you an A or B. Go to SI though, it is extremely beneficial.
Awful teaching methods. If you don't live by the book, then this class will be impossible.
Dr. Brown's lectures are really hard to follow at times. He does not prepare notes before class, he comes in and just starts teaching and writing on the chalkboard. He also says that certain things will be on the test and then they will not be on there at all. Take a different professor if possible.
Literally the worst teacher I have ever had. I am a Chemistry major and was actually really excited to be taking organic. He ruined it for me! It was painful to sit through his class and I always felt helpless. He screams the information. I am completely ill-prepared for the next level of organic chemistry. If Chem is your major, DO NOT TAKE!!
He's a very interesting guy. He hates Web assign so much he made them give us a refund. Tests are difficult but doable. He likes to blow stuff up. And he's a nice guy. If you get stuck with him you should be ok.
Most of the material from the tests is not covered in class, but comes off exercises from the book. He likes to put one difficult question on each test, and the tests are 25 questions, short answer, and no partial credit. However, if you can teach yourself and do the exercises from the book that he recommends, the tests should be easy.
Doesn't know what he's talking about. Tests have nothing to do with the material he covers in class. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Do Not Take Him !
Brown makes Chemistry way more harder and confusing than it needs to be. I attend every single lecture and get absolutely NOTHING out of them. The only way I learn in this class is by going to SI and doing problems in the book. I love Chemistry as a subject, I would NEVER take him again.
DO NOT TAKE PHILIP BROWN!!!!! You will regret it!
This guy is the worst teacher i have ever had and ever will have in my life. He does not teach. He does not know the material himself. His test averages are in the 50s and 60s and he excludes grades below 20's from the average so he bumps it to a 65 average and gives a 4pt curve. Still half the class under 60 on tests. He is too stubborn to curve.
Dr Brown is usually an organic chemistry teacher, but if you have him for CH 101, be prepared to not understand anything and be confused for the majority of the semester. He's a really interesting guy with an alright sense of humor but his method of teaching really sucks. If you ask for help he will go out of his way to help you solve your problem
Probably the worst teacher I've ever had. I went to lecture for the first few weeks before realizing they were just a huge waste of time. I tried to understand what he was saying, but the guy is simply not cut out for teaching. He needs to stick to research and never step foot in a classroom or lecture hall ever again. Made my 1st semester a PITA.
He is usually an organic teacher, but rumor has it he was so bad they moved him to 101. Do not expect this class to be easy. You will be your own teacher, you will need to read the book, and he will curve the tests so the average is a 70. His office hours are useful if you come in with specific questions, but lectures are jumbled a best.
AVOID BROWN AT ALL COSTS. 1st exam I got an 80. 2nd exam, class average of 56.12, 15 point curve, only 1 A in the whole class. Over half the class has dropped since the start. Med school hopefuls: avoid him. He loves the material but is spastic at best. His tests are ridiculous, multiple answers for one question, must get all to get points.
Oh man. I really liked Chemistry, especially Organic, and Dr. Brown is starting to make me hate it. He doesn't give partial credit, even if you get 99% of the answer right. He gives 20 question tests and if you miss one thing, automatic 5 point deduction. He comes in late to class and rambles about stuff that has nothing to do w/ the exam. AVOID!
Awful, avoid at all costs. Half the problems on tests seem irrelevant to what is being learned and he seems not to care much about helping you learn.
Okay let me start by saving you some time. If you expect to go to class and get a good grade don't take Brown or Organic Chem for that matter. Now with that being said, Dr. Brown is the best professor i've had at NCSU he is extremely passionate about teaching organic and if you work hard (Read the textbook and sutdy outside class) you'll do fine!
I took organic II with Brown, it was a hard class because of the material but he was very fair and understanding. And kind of hilarious
Worst chemistry teacher I have ever had. What he taught it class has NOTHING to do with the test and he does not respond to emails, nor does he care that the majority of his students fail every test.
Dr. Brown gets such a bad wrap, and look, Organic is a HARD class. You have to study a TON out of class, but as far as professors go, Dr. Brown is approachable, funny, and actually a pretty decent teacher. If you put in the time and effort, Dr. Brown will help you achieve a good grade, but don't expect him to just give it to you.
I took Dr. Brown for Organic Chemistry I--lecture does not help with comprehension. His lectures are very disorganized and does not give necessary detail to follow along. He expects you to read the material before class--designed for review. Tests do not match lecture or hw. Lots of book reading and practice tests. Future grad school student? AVOID
By far the worst professor ever. Goes berserk during lectures. Literally asks you to learn hundreds of pages of reactions for a test. All over the place. You have no idea what you need to know. Coming from someone with an A in organic 1.
Prof. Brown is a serious character. Person wise, I think he's great! He is funny and extremely passionate about what he teaches. On the down side, he's not very good at teaching it. His lectures are confusing and only sound like a bunch of foreign words stuck together. Read the book, go to SI sessions, and pray for a miracle and you MIGHT make a B.
There is no partial credit (which is INSANE for any organic chemistry class) if you miss one Carbon or Hydrogen you lose points for the ENTIRE problem.
He is passionate about what he does he just isn't very good at explaining it. He is very sporadic with his lectures and will sometimes waste 10-15 minutes of class on a point and then finish off with "but you won't need that until Organic Chem 2" his test questions differ greatly from those in the homework and there is no partial credit.
Brown is a really nice person, he is entertaining but confusing as all get out. I basically taught myself everything I knew. One day he spent 30 minutes ranting about sunscreen because someone mentioned zinc and he went off about zincs potential uses rather than sticking to the topic. Very funny, VERY loud. Would not take again. STRESSFUL.
Hard class in and of it self, he made this class a terrible one.
His opening speech was a promise to fail as many of us as he could, he gave impossible homework problems, he openly declared in class that he wished he had done something other than teaching with life. The only benefit of taking his class was that I could choose a major free of chemistry with no regrets.
Ok, first off no hard feelings to Dr. Brown i just couldn't get the material. I need more practice with reactions and he gave one example and moved on. He does go on tangents during the lectures, but can be a funny guy. He definitely knows the material, but you gotta do a lot on your own. Watch out on his exams, he doesn't give any partial credit!
Do not take this class if you have no prior knowledge of Organic Chemistry. Lectures are long and hard to understand. He is lenient on homework, and as long as you do your best on it you should get at least some credit. Exams are tough and the class average is usually around a 50. Get the textbook and the solution manual, they help a lot.
I understand how people see him as being a bad teacher, but he really isn't. He is loud but passionate and knowledgable about ochem. He will not spoon-feed you, if that's what you're into. If you don't know what happened last class, you will struggle big-time . Read the textbook and put in a decent effort. Exams aren't bad IF you study.
Even after reading the reviews I took him anyway thinking it wasn't going to be that bad, I was desperate, it's actually worse! I learned absolutely NOTHING. I ended up paying a tutor over $1k to teach me the material. His lecture is just a review he assumes you already know the material. Oh and the final HA! I think he pulled it out of his ....
He is the worst professor at NCSU! Stay away at all costs. He doesn't give partial credit and doesn't explain the material at all. I went to office hours and wasn't helpful at all. I suggest taking this class somewhere else.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
He is a nice enough person, but honestly I've never had a worse professor. His lectures were confusing, disorganized and not at all helpful. His exams were close to impossible... only 20 questions, no multiple choice, all multiple parts and he gave NO partial credit. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Organic Chemistry is a hard topic and this class will not be easy no matter who you take it with. However, I found Dr. Brown to be a good teacher who is very clear about his expectations. You have to put in the work, but if you attend lecture and pay close attention while you are there, I think this class is very fair.
DO NOT EVER TAKE BROWN, I repeat DO NOT EVER TAKE HIS CLASS. I am chemistry major, I have A+ in both general chem 1 and 2. I love chemistry since high school. But he made me hate organic, O-Chem is hard enough but he makes it even harder. He is literally the worst professor I have ever taken in my life. He so strict that you will hate your life.
I had Brown for Organic I and didn't do crazy well in the class but I think that if you read the textbook and put in the work, his class isn't that bad. Honestly I had a hard time adjusting at first with the way he does his tests but once you figure out his testing style you'll be just fine. I'm taking him again for Organic II.
You have to study from the textbook. His lectures are nearly impossible to follow otherwise. Orgo is a hard subject, and Dr. Brown does his best at teaching it. Go to office hours and the SI meetings because they can help.
Great guy, awful teacher. I'm a chem major but just couldn't make it through this course. Orgo is a difficult subject and he doesn't help at all. He lectures as if you already know the stuff. Textbook is necessary or you'll be lost otherwise. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM. Take another professor if you can. Wait until the next semester if you have to!
He was HORRIBLE. I was an engineering student and switched majors. I had to take the class and I made a TERRIBLE mistake by taking his class. His lectures act as if you need to know the material already. He does not teach well and his tests are horribly difficult. He curves test grades but the average is still failing. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!!!!!!
He's lecture heavy, but they're usually pretty interesting and always funny at some point. Beware of not knowing course material because you'll often be left to learn certain topics on your own such as certain laws.
Do not take this class. You will fail. My mans cant teach. Drop the class. He's so funny and actually a nice guy. He just can't teach.
I do not recommend if you plan on learning in class. I am currently halfway through the semester. This year is 5% participation and 95% test grades.
He's super bad and will not teach you and even if you understand you will still do super poorly on his tests because they are outrageously difficult for no reason. thumbs down:(
Phil Brown is the worst professor that I have had the displeasure of being stuck with while at NC State. There is no homework and he doesn't take attendance, so the only grades for the class are the tests. The tests contain random information from lecture, so if you decide to skip lecture and try to teach yourself from the text you still fail.
Attendance is not mandatory and the only grades you have in this class is four test grades. Lectures are usually all over the place and does not follow a set guideline, he usually jumps around when lecturing. If you try to teach yourself you will probably still fail because he puts random questions on the test. Would not recommend at all.
He loves to go on tangents about topics that seemingly have no relation to chemistry. However, beware because those odd topics WILL show up on tests. Also, the tests are ambiguous and open-ended in the answers. Don't take chemistry with him, unless you're a chemistry genius or like getting C's. He is a funny guy though.
Worst teacher I have ever had. The grades are based solely on tests. There are 3 tests and a final. For the three tests were already taken the averages were a C (74), a D (63) and what would have been an F (54) but he added 10 points to the test so its a D. DO NOT TAKE HIM. It is very likely that you will not get anything above a C-
Grading changed 5 times throughout semester; tests so far out of left field; read the textbook and went to class religiously, did all practice problems, studied for weeks leading up to test, still did awful on them; nothing he says in class makes sense and a lot of the tests are something he said in class once for 5 seconds; no ppts specific to him
He's pretty entertaining but not good at teaching whatsoever. The tests basically don't pertain to what he talks about during class or what is in the textbook. I've tried so hard to study everything that might possibly be on the tests and it's useless because his tests are ridiculous.
loves to fail students. should stick to research.
Phil Brown does not deserve to represent the chemistry department at NC State, much less be in a position to teach an introductory chemistry class. He does not know how to teach effectively, how to organize a lecture about material relevant to the course, or how to communicate what he expects of his students. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.
Professor Brown is passionate and very knowledgeable about Chemistry. However, he does not know how to effectively teach the material. The lectures are not well structured so expect to read and learn the material outside of class. He did give some extra credit near the end of the semester and that was the only reason I made an A in the class
Brown is a nice guy, but nothing he says will be on the test is and then he gives the hardest questions we only briefly discussed. Please do not take his class.
Very passionate and sweet teacher, yet does not teach anything that will be on the test. We paid for Webassign and then we no longer used it due to students complaining. Therefore, grading was based strictly on tests and it was a waste of money. Only take if you can teach yourself. On a positive note, he's very interesting to listen and talk to.
DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS MAN! Consider yourself warned. He is the worst. He doesn't teach. There are questions on the tests that aren't in the curriculum and he never mentioned.
Advisors, parents--if you see your student assigned to Phil Brown for CHEM101 have them DROP IMMEDIATELY and seek another professor--take in summer school, take at another university. SEND the Department of Chemistry, the Provost, the Registrar's office a MESSAGE! When there is no one sitting in his class--NCSU will get the message and FIRE HIM!
Nice professor for being humor in daily time. But NOT A GOOD TEACHER, he can't explain what he wants to teach so clearly and the test is barely related to textbooks. Even worse he skips those slides so quickly and you woldn't even have a chance to take note cause he thinks it is your responsibility to know what he says in class which is confusing.
Phil Brown has no idea how to teach Chemistry at all. His tests have nothing to do with his lectures. He yells during his lectures and cannot simply talk. On his last test he told the class they didn't need to know the last half of the chapter on the test, yet more than half of the questions were on those sections. DONT TAKE HIM!!!
I took this class to give Dr. Brown a chance. His favorite saying is that some people are just born with talent in chemistry and never have to try, others may study all the time and get C's. You can study, do the readings, and still fail his class. The tests are 50% of the grade and overly hard. He expects a full back ground in CH- for a gen ed.
This is the absolute worse teacher I have ever had in all 18 years of my life. He does not tell you anything about the tests and honestly does not deserve to be a CH 101 teacher. He goes off on tangents and his tests are nothing like the lectures or the textbook. Unless you already know chemistry, you will not do good in this class. DO NOT TAKE HIM
DO NOT TAKE BROWN YOU WILL LEARN NOTHING. He loves to tell you stories that may or may not be about Chemistry. What he goes over in lecture will not be on the exams. He's a TERRIBLE professor.
Phil Brown was by far the worst teacher I have ever had in all of my years of education. He elected to get rid of homework as there were some complaints of web assign grading incorrectly, making the tests a huge portion of our grade. This would have been fine if the class average for every test was an F.
Phil Brown is a hilarious guy and very underrated. His chem 101 class is not hard if you read the book and do the homework.
This is this first class I've ever failed, and honestly I tried my hardest. He expects you to learn from the book then come in knowing exactly what to do. Doesn't teach the topic in an understandable fashion. I understood less going out than going in. I would not say to take this course with him, wait until there is another teacher.
I'm not sure why the negative feedback. I just took this class this past semester and did fine, a B+. I'm not thrilled with chemistry in general but he is very interesting and very fair. I think the bad reviews are the people who just did not do the work.
My study mate just passed on the rating site. Maybe he was not good last fall but this spring he was great. I only got a C but not because of Brown. I had to work a lot of hours and just did not have the time. I should have waited until I had a lighter schedule. Still happy with the C given really bad effort on my part.
I took Dr. Brown over the summer & was pleasantly surprised. He isn't the greatest professor, but he's not as awful as his ratings make him seem. He was interesting & he curved every exam. Just put a LOT of effort into this class. Take good notes, ask questions, & watch yt videos. I recommend taking this class with a "light" schedule if you can.
I'm strong in math and science typically, but this guy was awful. He is ridiculously hard, and he doesn't explain it well . . . or at all sometimes. My worst experience at NCSU.
No matter how much you study, your grades wont add up. I studied for a day - got a 70. Studied for a week - got a 50. Studied for 3 hours - a 105. That doesnt add up
3 Exams (60%), 1 Cummulative Final Exam (30%), Kahoot Credit (5%), HW Credit (5%) The way to ace Brown's class is to teach yourself the main points of sections/chapters before the class. The final exam grade replaces the lowest midterm if you scored higher. Score a 75% average on HW and 85% on HW to get the 5 pts for each. Exams curved 15-20 pts
It's a tough subject. You have to put in the work, ask questions, think about the lecture material and go over homework questions and PRACTICE. It's really friggin hard. 5 stars because he teaches you what he thinks is important and if you understand the key concepts he teaches, it can be applied to other chapters. You HAVE to practice.
Grading scale is cool, curves on exams, anything below a 50 is an F. But this leniency is only because this class is EXTREME. Attendance isnt mandatory, so I stopped showing up and just started teaching myself because he doesnt really teach anything useful in class.
He stands at the front of the room and lectures, rarely writing anything on the board and speeds through powerpoints whenever he bothers to show them. As someone who cannot understand concepts by being talked at, Brown is horrible. The homeworks are pretty decent and fairly representative of the tests, but the tests WILL throw new material at you.
test questions are ridiculously hard. study all the material given to you and you still wont know some of the questions. exams are curved but still difficult to get an A
Was absolutely terrible. The lectures were absolutely pointless, confusing and hard to follow. He is not accessible outside of class and honestly doesnt care about the students.
I'm studying for a test in med school and memories of the class I took with Brown just came across my mind. If this is any indication of how miserable his class was, that was 4 years ago. Find literally any other professor. I squeaked out alive but there were many pre-meds in my class who would have made great doctors -- Brown crushed their dreams
Most pointless lectures ever. He ranted once that it is our fault for failing if we have jobs/kids. We were graded by 3 tests, meaning the final could be worth 70%. He kept delaying material because he thought it was too much for one test, and yet saved ALL reactions for the LAST WEEK and that made up 100% of the final. I have nightmares.
Brown a really nice guy and he does a lot better at teaching Orgo 2 then 1. If you read the book before class you'll really understand his lectures. A 60 is a C in his class and he curves more then professor i've ever known (i've had 18pt curves before). He's an okay teacher and you can definitely do well if you try really hard.
Take literally anyone else. Chemistry is a strong subject of mine and I am struggling to do well in this class. Get a tutor if you wind up with Brown because he does not teach what's on the test. We spent 2 lectures on a chapter that was supposedly on a test just to find out on the test that it didn't matter. Do not take Dr. Brown
Brown is the worst professor probably to walk the planet. He doesn't give two craps about his students. Four tests make up 95% of your grade. His lectures do not make any sense, as he gets side tracked VERY easily. He makes a confusing topic even more confusing, never answers emails, and overall is just very rude.
Worst professor Ive had. The first two classes were fun, yet Philip Brown is completely scatterbrained, and never stays on topic. Hes inconsiderate of your emails. He barely gives you homework, and when he does its not related to your tests. He doesnt clearly outline testing material. Tests are nitpicked. Too fast in lectures, you cant keep up
I took him fall 2019 and he was an absolute nightmare. I tried reaching myself from the book like i did with him for orgo 1 but couldnt. Not clear test grading it has nothing to do with lectures/hw, basically you are never prepared. I retook it again this semester with Dr. Proulx and got an A+ if that says anything about him vs a good prof.
DO NOT TAKE WITH BROWN. The worst professor I have ever had. Lectures are all over the place and have nothing to do with the tests. A monkey could probably teach better than him. He doesnt give two craps about you or your grade, and although he may be smart, I dont know how he still has his job. Good luck getting a passing grade.
A nice guy overall. He is easier to pass than most other NCSU profs bc he curves everything heavily. Grading is 95% from 5 exams. He does not indicate what will actually be important so you have to study everything and then might have several questions on info from one slide while entire chapter is ignored. Use outside resources and you'll be fine.
Dr. Brown is one of the worst professors NC State has to offer. His lectures are absolutely useless in which he emphasizes stuff that does not matter I would extend a whole semester than to take a class with him again If you are unfortunate enough to take him, I would suggest treating the class as an online class and learn the concept from YouTube.
Ever watch "Scrubs?", channel "Dr. Cox." Professor Brown thinks he is hilarious with his dripping sarcasm. I had rather watch TV for my entertainment and be taught for my tuition payment. His same flippant approach in his attempts to teach is what leaves students with no understanding of chemistry and their disdain for him. RUN AWAY, if assigned.
If I could give this professor a zero rating, I would. He has absolutely no care in the world for his students and if you go to him with personal concerns he will send your email to the entire class and then tell you to drop the class. STAY AWAY IF AT ALL POSSIBLE. He tends to ramble and not actually stay on track to what he's teaching.
Studied extremely hard but didn't understand anything (as a chem e with a 4.0). In a normal class, I would've failed but got a B because of the huge curve. Brown's presence makes the whole NCSU chem dept look bad. He should not be a professor.
Avoid at your own cost.
To put it simply, get ready to teach yourself Orgo Chem I and pray that the massive curve at the end of the course will save you. Only 4% of people in my 200+ section made A's.
If I could give Dr. Brown a 0, I would. He is by far the worst instructor I have EVER had. This was an asynchronous class, so there was no live lectures through Zoom, just videos he posted on the website. The lectures weren't helpful and he always rambled, never going back to the info that was important. Didn't give partial credit on the exams.
He did let you replace a test grade
Tests did not reflect anything that was taught in lecture, you are better off learning all the material off of YouTube. He hardly responds to emails and when he does he answers vaguely. He also emails you in the middle of tests to correct his own errors in the creation of the test. He Is not willing to work with students with questions.
I think a lot of people can agree with me when I say that his lecture videos do not make much sense. He's smart, but he does not do a good job explaining content and trails off into irrelevant topics. I understand that he has a lot of students, but he takes long to respond, sometimes he does not even respond at all, and if he does, he's rude.
Started off liking him as a professor and slowly began to really hate him. As many people have said, his lectures weren't great. His tests were very confusing in his set up since he did them through Moodle, although the class required web assign and could've just done it through there. Refused to give back credit due to syntax and was mostly rude.
This class deteriorated my mental health this semester. Dr. Brown's tests are multiple choice - no partial credit. This resulted in me failing tests despite somewhat understanding the content. His lectures are just awful - an hour of rambling and not much else. Please take this course with a different professor - or better yet, at Wake Tech.
THE WORST PROFESSOR! I spent hours taking notes, rewatching lectures, and reviewing PowerPoints and the tests didn't reflect anything we had learned. I tried reaching out multiple times but he rarely responded. The class was based mostly off of the tests. Barely passed. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. You might as well WAIT ANOTHER SEMESTER. DRAGGED my GPA
Ever watch "Scrubs?" Channel Dr. Cox. Professor Brown thinks he is hilarious with his dripping sarcasm. I had rather watch TV for my entertainment and be taught form my tuition payment. His same flippant approach in his attempts to teach is what leaves students with no understanding of chemistry and their disdain for him.
He is a professor who genuinely cares and tries to make you understand the material. It is a difficult subject but he tried to make every student feel heard and helped.
Dr. Brown is my politically correct and sensitive hero. I have learned so much in this class, especially about my favorite topic.... biodiesel! Dr. Brown is a very kind professor who truly cares about chemistry. I just wish I understood it better. But now I know how to make biodiesel. 10/10
I LOVE Phil. He is one my favorite professors I have taken at State. The lectures are a lot of fun, but kind of all over the place. This didn't matter though because I learned a lot and the tests were super easy.
Gotta love Phil Brown. He is clearly very knowledgeable about organic chemistry. His lectures were often hard to follow but always engaging with the emotion in his voice and strange stories. I have never seen someone so excited about biodiesel. I was always looking forward to going to class to see what out of pocket thing he was going to say next.
Professors Brown is hilarious, he says some outrageous things. His lectures are a bit all over the place, but his homework is very important. He rewords homework questions on the test and he usually tells you in class “you’ll need to remember this part for the exam.” Study the homework and you’ll be fine.
Dr. Brown is one of the worst teachers at State. Do not take him with all cost. He is very political and talks about insane things. He goes on random tangents about nothing to do with class. He doesn't know how to work Moodle and is getting sued for emailing us our grades. All of the grading is wrong and he will never help you.
