Good teacher - funny and engaging.
Smart guy, good teacher, hard class.... good luck and take advantage of his sample tests. All of his tests were exactly like his practice test except for the last one and everyone failed. I got a 60% on the final and it was curved to an A.
boring
He is not a bad guy. In fact, he blew up stuff which was fun. However while other teachers (CHEM 1) did Ch. 1-9 we did 1-18 we finished the whole book = to chem1 and 2. so it was HARD but hey 2046 should be cake.
I thought he was hard at first, but TAs help you with weekly quizzes. It may help to print some online notes and bring them to class. He funny, keeps it interesting, and has an awesome grading scale. I recommend him. Hes great.Tests just like Hitt Ques
No Comments
Grading scale is really good; don't bother asking questions it will be a total waste of your time; tests are pretty easy, study HITT questions!
He is a funny, cool professor. He wears the coolest shirts too. Anyways, with the help of my TA the weekly quizzes do get better and as long as you study those HITT clickers and understand how to do them, you should be good to go! Good grading scale!
Guy is a jerk. Don't bother asking him questions, he'll just blow you off. Smart man that tries to make everyone feel dumb. Easy grading scale, tough class. Pay attention to HITT questions.

The class is hard but Brucat's grading scale makes up for it. His tests are a lot like his clicker questions *hint hint* I studied mostly those and got an A. He's funny and tries to make class interesting... as someone else said, he blows up things :-D
Decieving grading scale. The HITT questions are ridiculously hard. I recommend against him. Also, he looks real cool riding his bike around campus.
His tests are just like the clicker questions. It's easy to get an A because of the grading scale. Try to get him for this class. It'll make your life easier.
The weekly quizzes, clicker questions during class, and home CSBs are great. They help your exam grades so much. His exams come straight out of the clicker questions. Sometimes he puts the same exact questions, if not he will just change a number or two.
His lectures were vague in regards to the work assigned and problems seen on the quizes/tests.
vague note giving.
Goes through material very fast and does not explain concepts well.
THIS GUY BLOWS, dont take him... he goes through almost twice as much material in than any other 2045 teacher. i suggest gettin' someone different.
he sucks seriously so much.. i usually am very good and anal about my studies but i cant do well in his class because he doesnt teach.. ya his tests are the clicker questions but no one never knows how to do the damn things ... its a lot of time that is unneccessary in this class .. shoot for anothe
Test questions are HITT but when you see a zillion hard questions you don't know how to do it doesn't help you to learn Chem. Don't make the mistake I did look for another professor!!!
this guy sucksssssssssssssssssssss. please, spare you're self.
One of the worst teachers you can have for a class as important as 2045. He covers too much material doesn't write notes and you come out knowing not much in a general sense.
A very difficult professor...you walk out of class not knowing what has just been discussed, although it is possible to do decent in his class because of his grading scale (anything about an 80 is an A). but if you want to learn find someone else.
he sucked
If run-on sentences with little or no meaning were strawberries, Brucat would make a lot of smoothies.
He uses math a lot which is probably why people don't like him, but he's a good teacher and is willing to help. The semester I took him, we saw a lot of the test questions in class as quiz questions. If you show up and do the work, you can get a decent grade.
too much work, horribly boring lectures
Do not take his class! He rambles, his notes aren't helpful, and he is a sucky teacher. Try to get Amaral.
Wow, I definitely had no idea what he was talking about during class. So much busy work, too!! And his tests are HARD!! Good luck with this one..try to get Amaral, she rocks!
I do not at all recomend taking this class. He rambles on and on and he doesn't explain anything clearly. I basically had to reteach everything to myself after each class. And don't even get me started on the tests.
Absolutely LOVED him! yes his lectures could be a little boring but you can see how much he loves the subject and he isn't one of those teachers that cares much about grading, so you have ample chances to get your grade up....his grading scale is great too!
He likes what he teaches he just has a hard time conveying them to the student.
He sucked ass, his questions often seemed impossible until u asked for help (then he make u feel like an idiot). Avoid at all costs.
has absolutely no regard for his students and only cares about stroking his ego, he likes to be hard for the sake of being hard
It is very easy to get an A. He really loves Chemistry, but his lectures are dull. He has online homework and quizzes, which are EXTREMELY EASY to get full credit for and the tests are based on the clicker questions. Read the book. It helps. Don't be lazy and whine about your bad grade.
Horrible man. He lies and he is an ****. dont take him, get Amaral or Zienteck. In fact, anyone but him would be better.
amazing man, you are going to learn chemistry, and it is a hard subject. but go to lecture, and read the book. its very easy to get an A if you learn the material. know his clicker questions for the tests, and you will do fine. and know the concepts from the book, cause he tests those a lot, too
This guy practically throws points in your face. His tests are exactly the same as his clicker/homework problems. Anyone who didn't get an A in this class was a slacker and wouldn't get an A in anyone's class. Take this professor.
Tests are EXACTLY like the HITT questions, so the tests are not confusing, but you don't learn a single thing in this class, except memorizing how to do his HITT problems. Easy A, but you don't really learn much.
this guy thinks its fun to teach 2045 and 2046 in a single semester... beware.
While Chemistry is usually pretty hard, this class wasn't too bad. Brucat is a nice guy and the tests are identical to the remote control quetions and homework. He does cool little demonstrations in class and is clear in his explanations.
this guy is horrible!!!! i have never hated a professor more in my life. He does not teach a thing u have to teach urself and read the book every single night..if ur into that kinda thing, i guess u can get an A.Its weird tho i ended up with a B+ with like all D's on my tests. Everyone says his tests r like the hitt questions, umm NO they are 10xs h
My efforts to study were pointless. memorize, memorize, memorize. you learn nothing, and don't bother doing the hw, he ends up giving everyone the points anyway, which sucks because I actually wasted my time doing it...retook class w/ keaffaber, and got an A vs. my D with brucat. BRUCAT IS AWFULLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
worst teacher at UF...get out of this class if you can. he gives a lot of extra credit but he makes u stress out so bad during the year. very unclear. his tests do not reflect his lectures or the book.
It's true, he is very unclear and his lectures do not reflect the book material. However his test are EXACTLY like his clicker questions which he posts a week before the test. I dont know how some people can get a D. I got an A and I studied three days before every test. I never even read the chapters, it's useless. His last test was very hard.
Too Technical and unclear lecture style
if you dont get an A in this class, youre retarded. its one thing if you dont like the way he teaches, but how hard is it to copy the homework from the solutions manual and memorize how to solve the clicker questions that he puts on his exams? it doesnt matter if you dont learn anything in this class because its all irrelevant once youre in orgo.
Took Brucat for gen chem and then for quantum mechanics as a senior. I got A's in both classes, and I also have no idea how anyone could not have done so. His classes are easy, and he's very smart, funny, and made his lectures interesting. Would recommend him regardless of the bad reviews by all of these morons.
PJP is one of the most interesting professors I have had. He is extremely helpful and knows what he is talking about. His lectures are enttertaining and informative. If you have to take chem I would recommend taking it with Brucat.
He is a great teacher. His tests are easy. Make sure you keep up with your owl and dicussion quizzes b/c those things can hurt you but then again there is no reason not to get an A unless you are stoned 24/7
I thought he was nice at first, just really difficult to understand if you arent a genius when it comes to chem. When finals came around, he was such a condescending ass to my questions that it just showed me if you arent nice when someone asks questions, you arent a good professor.
i love brucat! his lectures are interesting and he practically gives you the test questions through clicker questions. and anyone who complains about the final didn't listen to what he had been saying all year: the final questions were old test questions with different numbers. easy A if you don't get behind.
he's boring
PJ is the man. His lectures can be a little confusing sometimes if you don't pay attention, but they are usually pretty good and he is a funny guy if you catch his jokes. His clicker questions really help for the tests. He blew stuff up in class several times, which was sweet. The dude's brilliant! Take his class, it's not bad at all.
Brucat is an overall interesting guy. Honestly his lectures were confusing and not helpful in da least. I honestly got my A from reading the text, and feverishly copying his clicker question which are often replicated on exams. Therefore for that reason you should attend lectures .. so do what I said and you'll get a B+ da least.
The class was very boring despite the occasional joke or explosion...which was cool. OWL and his clicker questions helped on tests. He also put up practice quizzes before each test that were helpful. His TAs sometimes went over the quizzes b4hand It is very possible to get an A if u study hard. I got a B and i didnt even work to my full potential.
Dr. Brucat is really great. I went to get help a lot in office hours, and he was really good and stayed late. One time he helped me when I just randomly ran into him, and he didn't have office hours. Go to class. Clicker questions are helpful for test. Lecture is interesting. Stay on top of the reading and you will be set during lecture.
Explained confusing material in lecture so well! Posts lecture notes online, w/ pictures and links. Clicker questions help for exams. Nice and funny, by far best demonstrations in class compared to other chm2045 profs. Wish I had had him for 2046.
Recommended for Quantum
Physical chemistry was hard, but Brucat explains the concepts fairly well and his tests are fair. Although he is a nerd, he's an awesome guy and if you can get him for CHM4411, you should.
Excellent teacher, pretty funny as well.
I enjoyed his still of teaching. He explains things clearly and goes straight to the point. Tests are definetely manageable if you put some effort into studying his notes. Clicker questions really help and most of those questions show up on the test so make sure to go to class.
Professor Brucat is an amazing teacher for P-Chem. His lectures can be a bit intense, but he prepares you for his tests. His grading policy is fair and his homeworks and quizezs are a great help for one's overall grade. Plus, if the class as a whole does well, the final is not cumulative.
Good teacher, lectures were often yawn-worthy,(and often not tooo important for the test) but still good. Prepares you very well for the tests, and a pretty sweet grading scale.
PJ Brucat is the most worthless teacher I have ever had. He is the least helpful person I could imagine. On test days, his dishelved self will NOT say a word... he types up stuff on the computer and makes the computer talk to the class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
Dr. Brucat is a really great teacher, material is a little boring at times, but he tries to make it as painless as possible. Overall, just go to class and do his sample tests and your good for an A. Oh yea and go to office hours and he'll just explain what you dont understand so much better without making you work for it.
Experience was been great. He knows what he is talking about, his lectures tend to be very interesting and sometimes entertaining, except for some long derivations. If you visit him during office hours, he will help you. The tests were very fair bordering on easy. My only complaint was the textbook by Engel/Reid was horrible!Hope to take 4412 too
clicker points are a must (write down the qu's- they often pop up on exams). Exams aren't that bad. he's a bit impersonal, but its worth it to take chm 1 w/ him.
CHM2054L - HHMI Undergraduate Core Lab. He teaches this class likes it's P-CHEM. Even uses audio from his p-chem lectures for us to listen prior to attending lab. When he talks you want to shoot yourself because the sentence never ends, and he uses such abstract words that really aren't necessary. Grading scale makes it IMPOSSIBLE not to get an A.
hhmi lab. he's a genius - crazy smart - but he gave his TA's too much control over the course and yes, he taught it like it was p-chem lab. we didn't have a clue what was going on most of the time. took a lot of time for only 2 credit hours. would be completely different w/ different TA's but brucat's great. knows his stuff and wants to help.
Phil is a smart person, and I am sure he is a clever, innovative researcher. However, he is a profoundly bad instructor. He bulldozes through material via slides sans actually deriving material. His tests are more like IQ tests then Pchem tests, and more like general chemistry then pchem. I think he underestimates the difficulty of the material.
So Dr. Brucat is a decent instructor (especially when you consider the other options for P.Chem professors). He gives alot of E.C. on tests (although no real partial credit given), but they are challenging and sometimes arent reflected in difficulty by the practice ones. I didn't like that he acted like we were all engineers (ie were great at math)
Tests are difficult for some, but he provides practice tests which are almost exactly the same as the exams. He also allows you to use notes and your book on the exam. Very easy to get an A in this course. Brucat explains concepts well and is really funny. Do the homework and online quizzes, study previous exams, and you'll do fine.
Pretty good teacher. Pchem is the most difficult class I have ever taken, but with that said, Brucat makes it very passable. Lectures were all powerpoint and textbook was terrible; however, he reviewed the material before each exam and gave nearly identical practice tests. Very generous with extra credit was a big plus.
Dr. Brucat makes P Chem really interesting and relevant. We had a big class, but Brucat and the TAs always made themselves available to answer questions. Great class and professor.
Miscellaneous Chemistry would have been a better name for this course. What you learn in one chapter is irrelevant in the next one. Dr. Brucat WILL teach you the concepts well, but his exams require plugging-n-chugging instead. I stopped going to class when I realized all we were being graded on was how well our formula sheets were made.
Dr. Brucat might be the smartest guy I've ever met. His lectures are entertaining even though they're somewhat fast-paced and hard to follow. It's ok, though, because you don't really need a clear understanding of the concepts as long as you can do the old/practice exams. You can get an A with these as your sole resource.
I love Dr. Brucat. P-chem is hard, but he is a great teacher. I would take him again every chance I got.
Brucat is very knowledgeable, but your success on this class depends more on the TAs. When they tell you to write everything in your journal, they're not kidding, you'll need it during the practical. The class is hard, but not as bad as 46L. Take time before the labs to learn the material, and you'll be find. Grading scale is really fair.
He doesn't teach and then expects you to know all of these chemistry concepts. And then oh yea his tests are impossible to pass.
He has no idea how to teach a gen chem course. The guy is insanely smart but has no idea how to explain anything on a level where students with no prior knowledge can understand. He tries to make you feel as stupid as possible if you ask a question in class. His tests are nothing like what he goes over and doesnt show you how to do any of the math.
Do not take a class with him if you can help it, especially Chem for Engineers! Extremely hard to follow in lecture. All he does is talk and rarely writes on the board to show how to do problems. Also, you better just shut up in lecture and not ask any questions or he will bash you for it and be extremely rude. He does not care if you fail.
I'm currently in Chem 1 for engineers and the only thing I like about the class is the fact that an 80+ is an A. The lectures are worthless- I only go for the clicker questions. I struggled with the tests even though I understand the concepts perfectly-got a 5 on AP Chem and refresh by reading the textbook. I recommend not taking him.
AVOID HIM IF YOU CAN. Awful professor. He thinks that he teaching graduate students in his chem 1 class. He is the only prof for chem for engineers and he has no business teaching undergrad. If you ask a question during class he makes you feel like an idiot and embarrasses you, and you have to teach yourself online through a faulty program.
I'm quite perplexed by all the total hate for the guy, he is the absolute best alternative at UF to get a chem credit, his class is honestly pretty easy because he curves everything to death, is he the greatest professor? No. But he is the much better alternative to Gen Chem which is almost a guaranteed B or lower, just make sure you can self-teach
I think he's awesome! Had him for Chem 2 Honors. It was rather stressful during the semester, but in the end, turned out unexpectedly well. He's pretty funny too.. Not to mention that he's a genius!
He's a decent teacher if you have prior knowledge... I didn't know anything but still managed to get an A... and I still don't know anything about .chem
Really awesome nice helpful teacher, but still definitely couldn't have done well in the class without study edge
Dr. Brucat is a freakishly smart guy. He's rarely (if ever) wrong, and he knows it. I struggled, but I feel like I've improved my analytical skills 100 fold. Be ready to work but you will get out of it what you put in.
Worst professor. Teaches at grad school level and speaks to you as if you've taken the other classes that he's taught, which no one has because he's awful. Looking for useful feedback on lab assignments? You won't get it. However, you will get mocked and told your data is hilarious, when he's the one providing barely-working equipment.
Dr. Brucat is extremely intelligent, very approachable, and a phenomenal lecturer. That being said, the lab that he runs is a complete mess. The TAs are consistently giving instructions and advice that differ from each other, the technology used in the lab is constantly faulty and/or not calibrated, and the overall content is painfully dry.
Dr. Brucat is a funny guy, but his CHM4411L class is difficult. He expects you to know the intricacies of Python and grades assignments very harshly. He will write on students' reports things like "Poor conclusions supported by even worse data." The way he talks down to students can make them feel inferior and not eager to ask questions.
Dr. Brucat taught CHM4412 & he was an awful instructor. His lectures were hard to understand, & he all does was read off his packet of wordy notes. His graphs & equations in the notes are unhelpful. If you ask for clarification, he makes you feel dumb. He expects you to know everything & teaches at the graduate level. AVOID at all cost! Run away!
Dr. Brucat expects his students to use Python to do their homework in CHM4412 when we have never taken a coding class. His initial demonstration on using Python is mediocre but expects you to write complex codes afterward, especially for the HW. He doesn't care. Going to the TA for help is more helpful than having him explain the class material.
Brucat's P-Chem class is no joke, but his lectures make it engaging. Utilize unstuck ai and practice exams to ace this course.
