Mr. Heap is the coolest guy ever!! He is sooo helpful if you go to him during office hours..he gives a great study guide and he helps you with it at office hours the week before tests. He is very down to earth also and curves a lot! def. your best bet for econ200!
Phil is awesome! He's fun and extremely down to earth. His tests are kinda hard but as long as you show up to class, listen, follow along with each chapter for the week and review your stuff before the test you should be fine. He gives bonus quizzes alot on Fridays so they can really help you out and his curves help out! Be glad if you get him=)
cOOLEST TEACHER EVER. class is a little difficult but grades on a great curve. if you go to class and pay attention you'll do fine, and be entertained.
Heap is the man, nothing but 3 tests and a final unfortunately, but he does give bonus quizzes usually on fridays, he curves so as long as you come to class you shouldnt get less than a B, TAKE HEAP
Phil is a great prof for people who don't know much about economics. The lectures can be a bit confusing if you're not a math person, but he'll always help you out. Do your homework, know the terminology, ask for help. Yes, he is really cool, but he's even more helpful than cool. Take him if you are forced into an Econ class for GenEd requirements.
I liked Phil. He was always helpful to me if I had a question after class or went to his office hours. His b. quizzes are great, just read the book. Study notes but I found the class interesting and that made the material more bareable. TAKE HEAP IF YOU DON'T LIKE ECON
This class was so hard. You have to go or you will be lost. Reading the book is very important too. The only grades are 3 tests, a paper, and a final. He goes very fast and sometimes thinks the class understands when we dont. Nice guy though and helpful. econ just sucks
Macro is a hard class, especially if you don't have an interest in econ. But Heap is a good teacher, and as long as you do your part you'll get atleast B.
Macro is a hard class, but I did find it interesting. Prof. Heap is a good teacher and always willing to help.
I decided to go about 60% of the time and got a B. Had to teach myself, but if you can do that, you dont even need to be in class. Grades based on a curve = EASY B. don't expect to get an A though. this course is set up to get you a B. oh and Heap dresses everyday like he is at the beach, not business school lol. nice guy!!
I really enjoyed the class. Heap does a good job at explaing the theory and discussing modern day economic issues. The class wasn't that hard if you studied, but the exam was tough.
My favorite prof so far. Uses sex, drugs, and rock n' roll to explain his models. So helpful, not an easy class but a must have prof.
he is a funny professor. he moves a little quick and is kind of sporatic with his lectures so note taking is difficult. he does a nice bell curve so it is easy to pass the class, but he is tough so it is hard to get an A
Professor Heap is an extremely difficult professor to get a good grade in. Of all of his econ students this year, only 15% have an A or a B. On top of that, he has a very callous and miserable personality as well. If you are only signed up to take him to fulfill gened requirements, you should strongly consider taking another class instead.
A hard class because there are random quizzes and that makes up the entire grade except for cummalitive final. Nice guy and is fair.
Terrible professor. Very hard class and get ready to read a lot. His pop quizzes suck and your grades are made up of these quizzes and the final at the end of the year. AVOID IF YOU CAN! This year, over half the class either has a D or F. NOT GOOD!
He is the HARDEST TEACHER ever!!from my 25people class 6 ended up dropping this class. Quizzes almost every class!!!
Professor Heap is a very difficult professor. I have him once a week and he usually makes us read about two chapter each week to get ready for the class. His grade is made up of pop quizzes (60%) and a final (40%), if you read for the quizzes you'll do fine. That being said, Phil is very fair and I like having him as a professor.
Not sure what everyone is talking about. He changed his style this year to 9 pop quizzes to which he drops 4 of which really helps. It was easier to study one chapter for a quiz rather than 4 or 5 or a test. He helped out and gave extra credit. Out of the econ professors I would suggest Heap. If you go to class and read you'll be fine.
Attendance isn't mandatory but for this class our entire grade was based on pop quizzes (8 of them) throughout the semester and then our final. He's a nice guy though and really helpful. I would recommend him.
attendance wasnt manadatory. but i made the mistake of missing a few of his pop quizes. which make up 60% of ur grade. the other 40% is the final. he is very clear with his powerpoints, and VERY helpful. he will answer any question that you ask during a lecture and was extremely honest and fair in his grading. take him if you dont mind working.
Tough teacher, really makes you learn the material. Quizzes and final are both hard, but not impossible especially if you study. You cannot BS in the class, you must learn and understand the subject to get a good grade. No attendance policy but it will kill you if you dont go. I would recomend because you walk away a better, smarter person.
Heap is hilarious and will keep you awake in class, whether he's teaching the supply and demand of drugs or the economics of the male/female ratio at JMU. Hard class, no attendance policy but he doesn't post notes on Blackboard. Final is nearly impossible, quizzes are difficult, but he makes economics fun...which is pretty impossible IMO.
hilarious, but hard. you will learn. math skills are required.
Very hard class, but Heap is a very good teacher, very clear, and definitely knows what he is talking about. No tests but you get random quizzes and he takes your best 5 as 60% of your grade. Doesn't take attendance but I would definitely go to every class.
One of my favorite professors. Grades fairly and 60% of your grade is based off of 8-9 quizzes of which he drops 5. The other 40% is the final. I easily got a B+ with him as he is very clear and helpful. You must go to class though and read. Highly Recommended
Awesome teacher this guy knows his stuff. Tough class you need to stay on the ball in this but if you think you already know econ you can just take the final at the end and have your whole grade based on that. I learned more with Heap than any other professor and still only got a C. You will get your moneys worth but maybe not the GPA you want.
Gives about 8 quizzes and only keeps 5 of them. Final is 40% of your grade. Tough thing is quizzes can be given at anytime. Study an hour before each class and you'll be fine.
Likes when students fail quizzes
Alright, where to start. This guy knows his stuff well, but does a terrible job at teaching it. He gives around 10 random quiz's and only keeps 5 of them. Problem is they are at any time, and most likely on a subject you didn't look over. Class is fun but there is not much incentive to go. STAY AWAY if you can not teach yourself from the book.
Funny guy and makes the class interesting even though most of the stuff is really boring. quizzes are really hard but he drops half of them. Final is ridiculously hard. read the book it helps.
I'll give you a better perspective because it seems like the people who rated before me were first semester freshman. Class is hard, however, by talking to Heap, he makes it 20 times easier to understand. Very helpful and so approachable, he can really help you out. 11 Quizzes, drops 6, tough final. Phil makes the class alot of fun. Hilarious guy.
Phil Heap is the worst business teacher I've ever had. He gives about 9 pop quizes and a final, all his quizes and tests are short answer and essay. He does not fully explain ideas and how to apply them. I got a B+ in Macro but Mico with Mr. Heap is horrible. Do not take.
bad. Quizes suck. Kicks you out of class and takes 5 points off your final grade.
Good Professor. He only deducts points if you text or talk in class which is reasonable because you shouldn't do it in the first place.Go to class so you won't miss a quiz. Though quizzes are random you get a better notion of when they'll be as the semester goes on.
He knows his stuff and uses examples that relate to individuals our age. He demands respect (no talking or cell phone) and makes you sing if you are late, but thats not the end of the world. Dont violate his rules and you wont be punished. Go to class and pay attention and you will do fine. I know thats probably asking alot for a college student.
Great Teacher! Really relates to students are age with examples and explanations! You have to go to class or you might miss a quiz but class can be interesting majority of the days. 10 quizes drops lowest 5. Just pay attention in class and you'll pull a B in the class.
9-10 quizzes and he keeps your 5 best. Don't be fooled, unless you've attended most every class, and kept up on your readings big time, the quizzes will stump you - every quiz is 4 short answer critical thinking questions. I wish my grade reflected how much I enjoy his class - unfortunately it doesn't
This guy is the worst. He truly is the spawn of satan and doesnt care about his students at all. get the hell out now
Please ignore the negative reviews that talk about how hard it is, they must have lived in a magical world where bunny's frolic and fart sunshine and rainbows. It is a rather difficult class, but the professor is entertaining and will help you when needed. He gives quizzes, not exams which actually helps your grade. However in general, Econ = Hard.
The guy is a jerk. Liked him all semester long and did well on all my quizes and had an A- in the class. He gave me a C though because he said I talked. I hardly ever talked. Idk what kind of teacher lowers your grade by 16 % points.
He is tough, but nothing over the top. Econ in general is never easy and he actually makes you learn the principles, not just regurgitate definitions. Also, try to answer often in class. I did pretty well on quizzes, but ended up with an A because I participated a lot. If you want to learn a lot and don't mind working hard, take him.
Very difficult class. If econ does not come easy to you then DO NOT take Heap! Quizzes are very hard and open ended and some questions have nothing to even do with econ. He talks way too fast so it's hard to understand stuff. But when you go to his office hours he is very helpfull and his grading is pretty fair. The book barely helps either.
HEAP IS HARD! Regardless if Econ comes easily to you or not, you will have to work your butt off to get a B in this class. I would strongly suggest looking into another professor if you value your sanity.
Bring a drink.
I found micro with Heap to actually kind of interesting...and thats saying a lot about micro. You are graded most entirely on quizzes throughout the semester, but they are mostly from the notes. Not an easy class.
One of the greatest microeconomics teachers and probably the best at JMU. Knows all of the information by heart and with great detail. His lectures are very entertaining and he teaches in a way that everyone can understand. You can get an A in the class if you study before every class. Take this class.
Heap is a great guy! very helpful during office hours. I would not have passed this class without going to get help in between classes. Somehow pulled out a C and didnt have to take the final. I would take him again if I was better at econ.
There is a high correlation between grades and where students sit. If you sit in the front two rows, and volunteer a lot, you will do well. No matter how bad your answers are, he applauds the effort and makes it worth your while. The further you sit to the back, the less seriously he will take you. I didn't miss this class once and learned a lot.
I REALLY enjoyed this class. Yes, it is hard but it's extremely interesting and Heap is so helpful and nice if you go to his office hours. Don't think because you had a quiz one day you can miss the next class--mistake. Don't ever be late if you're shy he really will make you sing, I had to twice. Ended with a B. Strongly recommend if you like econ
Heap was a great professor. I had him in the fall and he made class really entertaining. If you do well on the quizzes you won't have to take the final. If you pay attention in class and read the assigned chapters you will do well on the quizzes!
He's a really smart teacher & how he relates economics to the real world is interesting. I have 5 weeks left & have NO idea what my grade is.No one in my class does, nerve racking. Good but not great, gave everyone an "I" for their midterm grade, not helpful
Heap is the man. Game theory is my favorite class I've taken at JMU and Heap makes it even better. Class is made up of 8 quizzes (3 are dropped), A final (you get 75% of test before hand), and homework (not that bad). The class is challenging, but a lot of fun. Definitely recommend
Future econ majors enjoy this guy, otherwise stay away at all costs. I've taken micro before and nothing prepared me to the difficulty of his class. all of his assessments are pop quizzes. You basically have to study for almost every class if you want an ok grade. If econ gets you hard then take him though. He knows what he's talking about
Good Lord. This class was HARD and the final was awful. Prof Heap is really smart though and he knows what he's talking about (as far as I know). You REALLY have to be dedicated to this class to get a good grade. He's very helpful and clear during office hours. My grade may not reflect it well, but I feel like I learned a lot from him.
Heap was a really great teacher and wants his students to truly succeed. His quizzes and final are impossible though. But he curves a lot; my grade went from a 75 to a 90 with his curve. If you want an easy A, take a different professor. If you are really interested in economics, take Heap. He was one of my favorite professors.
hardest class ive ever taken and will probly ever take. I literally had to memorize the textbook to suceed. All that said he is a really cool guy and I cant imagine learning more from another teacher.
Gives a lot of readings in a lot of different books, no midterm and only counts the 6 best quizzes are really hard. Holds review sessions in the afternoon to help that also give extra credit though.
Professor Heap is a great teacher, he really knows his information well; however, if you are taking the class you have to be deicated to the readings he assigned bc the questions will most likely appear in the quizzes, even though it is pop quizzes it is most like 1 a week, take good notes and the final was not as hard as it had seemed.
I'm kind of tired of people complaining about this guy. He is clear in his lectures, and yes, you actualy have to read. He really wants everyone to do well, curves, and prepares you incredibly well for the final. It's not a class you can just breeze through without doing the reading, but all it really takes is a little effort. HES NOT TERRIBLE!!
Professor Heap is probably the most knowledgable and insightful professor for macroeconomics. However, HE IS HARD!! I loved him, and he was definitely very clear. Attendance is not mandatory but pop quizzes make you go to the class. Also, DO THE READINGS!! If you don't the quizzes are impossible. Very reasonable, however, lots of work.
Heap is the bomb! Highly Recommend. Class is entertaining if you have any interest in econ. Quite a bit of work but suck it up and do all the reading and attend class and you'll get at least a B and learn a lot.
Heap is simply the man. He's one of the smartest teachers I've ever had and isn't as hard as everyone says. The material is very interesting no matter what your major is. He gives a decent amount of extra credit and if you go to his help sessions he clears up everyything you might've missed in class. He is also very clear in teaching. Great teacher
Heap is one of the most informative, knowledgeable, and entertaining professors. There are 12 pop quizzes throughout the semester. Make sure you read everything and don't miss a class. If you do, good luck. It's one of the hardest classes you will take, but take advantage of review sessions and study before every class. Take advantage of all EC.
Heap is a hard teacher. The class itself is interesting but gets complicated. The final is impossible. Avoid this class if your looking for a guarenteed A. All pop quizzes are extremely difficult.
VERY good at explaining the material, moves a bit fast sometime, but go to his office hours and he does an excellent job of catching you up. His quizzes are very hard but if you're prepared they aren't terrible. Don't take this class for an easy A, but if you really want to learn the material he's one of the best.
The fact that there is no textbook makes this course exponentially harder. Relying on Heap's disorganized outlines and extremely fast paced notes makes studying for the class difficult even if you are a hard worker.
Heap is a TOUGH professor. He is very smart and is clear in his lectures, but his quizzes (which make up 70% of your grade) are ridiculously difficult. He sets up the class so that if you don't attend his Sunday review sessions, you will NOT do well. There is a curve though. If econ isn't your passion, take another professor!
The average quiz grades to date combined is a 3/10...I think this says a lot about his teaching and less on how well the class studied. I for one studied hard and still failed everyone. He definitely tries to trick you. I also hate his attitude its very superior and smug. Wish I didn't take this class.
I can't stand this class. I have been doing almost all of the reading, and coming to every class but then compl. fail every quiz. He is NO help. When I asked for help all he says is do the reading & look at the notes--I DO BOTH! I understand in class, but his quizzes are impossible (4 questions worth 25 pts each)& he doesn't pass back til next quiz
I hated this class. I thought it was very difficult to grasp because his lectures aren't easy to follow. he only has 9 quizzes, no tests but the quizzes are near impossible. they are only four questions very vague. I ended up getting a c in this class but that's only because I went to office hours and even attended other sections of his class.
This is a VERY difficult class, but professor Heap is an outstanding professor. He is very knowledgeable and wants you to do well. Do the reading, go to class, and go to his extra review sessions. The pop quizzes are really tough but its not that hard to get a B in the class
Straight up he is the man. How interesting his class is overcomes how hard it is. He loves when people ask questions and when people go to his office hours. He will help you with anything you need. Go to his review sessions on Sundays they help a lot. Don't use this site to find out what the final is like because he changes it up every year.
Heap is one of the most informative, knowledgeable, and entertaining professors. There are 12 pop quizzes throughout the semester, and he keeps the best 7. Make sure you read everything and don't miss a class. Take advantage of review sessions and study before every class. Take advantage of all EC. Had him for GECON, ECON201 is just as good w/ him.
Very very tough class. If ECON is not your thing, do not take Heap. 70% of your grade is written quizzes, which isn't my style of testing at all so that really killed me. Very knowledgeable professor but if you're just trying to survive ECON I would recommend a professor that doesn't already assume that we all want to be ECON majors.
The only reason I survived this class is because Heap has such a cool personality. Otherwise, I did terrible in the class. Econ is not my thing, and his pop quizzes killed me even though he does give you the benefit of the doubt in some cases. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS AND STUDY STUDY STUDY if you want to get a good grade.
Real funny guy - but very hard to pass. On quizzes if you don't have every single detail written down (even the unnecessary obvious parts) you will get half credit. Really discouraging class after a while of trying too hard and going to office hours is degrading.
Heap is fair. You have to study hard and remember a lot of details, but he is fair when he grades. You will not do good on the first couple of quizzes just because there is a bit of a learning curve but if you stick with it and work hard it is possible to get a good great. If you can't commit at least an hour to his class every day don't take him.
Heap is a funny but the class is ridiculous grading wise. Only chance you get an A is if you put 3 hrs studying prior to each class. His grading is so hard but he knows his stuff
He's a really cool professor. No tests, only 11 quizzes, and he takes the best 7. There is a final. Offers a lot of extra credit And he's really helpful. I want to take him again for micro
Gives out 10 pop quizzes throughout the semester takes top 7, that's 70% of your grade. Near impossible final that's the other 30%. Ruined my GPA. My advice wait until you have more credits to sign up for a decent GECON200 professor.
This class is really interesting, but he is HARD. I do all the reading and I still don't feel prepared because there is so much reading. He really knows what he is talking about, but I am struggling to pass the class.
I would not recommend Heap to anyone. His class is extremely hard and once you get confused (which is usually the 1st or 2nd class) there really is no chance of catching up, unless you forget about all your other classes and spend all your time on this one. For a GenEd, this class is ridiculous. If you can take Macro at a community college, DO IT.
Such a good teacher! His quizzes are difficult if you don't spend time reading and understanding the books, however, if you pay attention to class and read very thoroughly, you'll be fine! Many people don't like him because of the quizzes but if you're lost, go to his office hours, he's soo helpful and really helps you understand things.
I will never take him ever again. The tests are hard. Average is around 65-70%. There are 7 quizs throughout the semester. All of them are POP quizs. I studied at least three hours every time before the class. Still, I do not do well. I have been getting a lot of 100% tests on Calculus III, but I could not even scratch a C in this class.
Wow. Don't take. I'm pretty smart and still had issues.
Here's the deal with Heap. He doesn't care about wither you learn the material or not. You can be a genius in Macro, take his class and completely fail it. The only means of survival is following his rules and going to his office hours until he likes you enough to tell you what questions he will ask. Avoid at all costs. grade of c as an econ minor
He is tough and doesn't like having distractions in his classroom which can make the environment intimidating if you are not prepared. The course load will be challenging, especially in the first half of the year so be ready to perform. If you do your work consistently and don't procrastinate in his class a B or higher is very manageable.
Heap is a very hard professor, and you have to work hard to get a descent grade. However, i learned the most out of this class than any other. He does pop-quizzes throughout the entire semester so your forced to study everyday. He's very clear and does great lectures, just NEVER pull out your cell phone.
Heap is very knowledgable, but a terrible teacher. He plays games with his students with pop quizzes which do not correlate well with the readings. Everything he says in class is based on the readings, but even then it is difficult to understand. I had to withdraw because of the amount of stress and work was killing me. Avoid at all costs.
He is a very difficult teacher. I would not recommend taking him unless you are prepared to learn a lot. However, if you are determined to get an A, you will. I do recommend him for all business majors because you will learn so much and it will be necessary to know it all in the future.
DO NOT TAKE. HORRIBLE. He is very smart but should not be a teacher. His pop quizes are extrmely hard. Class avergae was around a 46%. A GenEd class should NOT be this hard.
Heap is very smart and should be working in his field not at a university. He calls himself the spawn of satan. This is a hard corse already and should not be taught like this. More than half the class has failing grades. Go to his office hours or study sessions!
If you don't learn by only reading and memorization, then you are pretty much screwed for this class. He is unhelpful when giving study tips and assumes everyone in the class is an idiot because they can't answer his ridiculously difficult questions.
Probably one of the smartest professors I've ever had, but IF YOU ARE NOT TAKING THIS CLASS AS A MAJOR REQUIREMENT, DO NOT TAKE IT. It is the hardest class I have had so far and it requires hours of readings daily. He gives solely pop quizzes throughout the semester and they are terrifying. It is do-able but SO MUCH EFFORT REQUIRED.
He knows what he's talking about, but he's not interested in students doing well. More than 3/4 of all of his students are failing, but he offers extra credit and weekend review sessions. This class had no structure.
Heap is easily one of the smartest professors I have had, but he is an awful teacher. Almost never understood any of the work and treats you like you are training to be an economist. Do not take this class with him.
If you plan to take this class as a Gen. Ed. i would advise against it because of the workload. However, if you are taking this as a business prerequisite then I would take Heap. He is definately not the easiest but if you actually do the work he tells you an study an hour or 2 before each class, getting a B will not be difficult.
This class gave me a lot of anxiety literally every day. I dont recommend as a gened. If you do have him, go to his office hours, get to know the man, and let him help you with everything that you need help with. Take the initiative! He is more than willing to help you if you seem stumped. Work your hardest and do your best!
Awful teacher who bases grades on ridiculously challenging fill in the blank pop quizzes every other class. He only offers help at 8 am on Saturdays and Sundays.
Phillip Heap is a special type of professor. If you are not an Econ major, don't bother because he will confuse the sh!t out of you. If you are into economics and look to really get something out of Macro then this is your guy. He taught me more in one semester than I have learned my entire life. Switched majors because of this guy but I like econ.
Worst class I have ever taken. Got me beyond stressed out. Lots of reading, pop quizzes almost every class that are super hard. You will struggle to pass. I did, but avoid him at all costs.
Most confusing teacher ever. Way too smart to be trying to teach students he calls "stupid". I thought I could understand the subject better by reading the textbook, but unfortunately he wrote it, so everything is explained exactly the same in the book as in his lectures. He doesn't seem to care how many people fail his class.
Heap is a very smart man but expects you to be just as smart. I choose to withdraw from this class instead of fail it and have to retake it. Your entire grade is based on 5 in class pop quizzes that the class average was about a 210, and a few take home quizzes, and the final. Take this class with a different professor, its not worth the stress.
Phil Heap is an awesome professor. It was honestly the most interesting class I have ever taken. You read some really good books and the quizzes are not hard; all you have to do is read the book. Also the in class quizzes are not hard at all if you just go over your notes before class. I would definitely recommend.
This was the hardest class I have ever taken. You only get graded on pop quizzes and the final, and he purposely makes the class hard so that people will withdrawal, giving him a smaller class.
Giving him the benefit of the doubt is not a good idea. Worked as hard as I could (attended review sessions, office hours, didn't miss a reading assignment) and still managed failing grades. This class will consume all of your time without reward. Also likes to degrade students and remind them of their "stupidity". I had to withdrawal with a F.
Better be ready if you have Heap. Only quizzes you get are pop quizzes which he grades extremely tough. I did most of the reading and studied and still had trouble. Eventually had to drop. Don't take him unless you're ready to devote half your time to study for his class
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. i do NOT understand why he has such high ratings. Gives pop quizzes all the time and which are all short answer. Powerpoints are confusing and he goes off on tangents. By far the hardest class I have ever taken and I am by mo means a slacker. do not take
Game Theory is an interesting topic. Heap, on the other hand, is a dismal prof. His rating here is high because freshmen are impressed by a 50 yr man swearing and berating them--they enjoy his tyranny. As a junior, it's easy to see thru his BS. This man is disorganized, rude, + condescending. Do not take him. His low salary speaks for itself.
Heap is the most brilliant man I've met and his lectures were clear cut and captivating. Quizzes are hard but only takes top 5 out of 10. Participate, get to know him, attend help sessions and speakers, and receiving an A is not impossible. He is not an unreasonable grader. With all the extra credit I ended up with a 91 in the class.
He is loved by few and hated by many. He calls himself the spawn of satan and he embraces it. He does know the information very well, but if you don't study your notes every day there is no way you're going to understand everything,
It is a really tough course, but I did all the readings and went to office hours for extra help. He can be scary in class, but one on one, you can tell he really cares about his students. Go to every extra credit opportunity you can! Help sessions on sundays are worth it. I worked really hard & got a B.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Your grade is mainly based off of 4-question pop quizzes that are insanely hard, even if you do all the reading. He degrades students and makes you sing "I'm a Little Teapot" in front of the whole class if you are ever late. I dropped the class and strongly do not recommend him!
My biggest regret is taking his class. Heap is an okay professor but his 4-question quizzes are impossible. They're usually pop quizzes too. Even if you go to every class and study, there's a very good chance you won't do well. Avoid him at all cost.
Honestly if you value your GPA DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, find a different professor. He is arrogant and loves to remind students that he is smarter than they are. Has no problem failing students and might actually enjoy it. Lectures last all class and he usually relates prostitution to each one, which makes it extremely uncomfortable. DON'T TAKE IT!
For Micro he's definitely tough, I like him as a person but as a teacher he was alright. He is very clear about readings and what he wants, but everything accept his final is all pop quizzes. I would suggest steering clear if you aren't ready to constantly be on your toes and reading with his class because every point counts. Attendance is graded.
Awful. DO NOT TAKE. I came out with a C but I had to stress like crazy for it and roughly half of the class withdrew at the W deadline. The entire grade is based on pop quizzes which are impossible (Getting a 510 is difficult). He also thinks he is the smartest guy on the planet and he talks down to the class. If at all possible, do not take him.
Quiz every week on the reading from the assigned books. Fair grader.. He holds help sessions about every sunday and gives points for attending at the end of the year. takes the score of your highest 5 quizzes (50pts), + 2 take home tests(20pts) out of70 and add EC +exam grades for your total grade. He lets you know your grade 1 week before finals.
Probably the worst class I've taken at JMU. Gives pop quizzes but are on random topics that you didn't discuss, is rude to his students, and if your not an Economics major your going to be completely lost. Just take this class at your local community college, probably a million times easier.
Don't take this class or you will cry yourself to sleep every night and it will ruin your freshman year. This professor is the worst I have ever had, he completely belittles everyone and fails 90% of the class. Take literally anyone else or better yet, at community college. TRUST ME.
easily the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. only class I've ever had to withdraw from. went to his office hours and help sessions and it still didn't help. I'm not a bad student, i took this class in HS. DO NOT TAKE WITH HIM
Phil gladly calls himself the spawn of satan. He gives out quizzes once a week based on lectures and readings, but gives no hint as to what to study for them. As a person, he's hilarious and awesome. But he teaches super fast and assigns alot of readings that you HAVE to do to understand what's going on. I wouldn't recommend
I took this class for my major and he tells you the first day if you're a freshman you may not pass. He makes you read chapters from the textbook, an online website, and a small book every single night. If you don't read and take notes you will not pass this class. He makes you feel stupid if you ask a question and has pop quizzes. BEWARE OF HEAP.
This was the toughest class I have ever taken. Heap doesn't necessarily want you to fail, he is just gives a lot of work and is sometimes hard to understand. I HIGHLY recommend going to his office hours. He usually gives extra credit to those who go and is very helpful in them. People are scared of him but once you get to know him he is a good guy.
He gives out quizzes every other class, for the most part. These are difficult if you do not read however manageable if you do. He gives extra points as a curve and his grading scale is slightly lower than the usual ten point (i.e. 85-100, A). This is a difficult class however it will prepare you for upcoming business classes.
Not worth the stress. It almost seems like he wants us all to fail. Even if you keep up in this class, it is nearly impossible to get a decent grade.
Extremely hard but very informative. 11 pop quizzes, he counts 6 but they are very difficult. 2 data projects that are assigned in the beginning so he grades them throughly. If you want to get an easy A or B or even C for that matter do not take him. If you want to learn Econ take him. overall very good professor.
Overall I really enjoyed his class, lectures are interesting. Gives 11 pop quizzes keeps top 6, and 2 data projects. If you study and go to office hours its not bad. Put in effort and you should be able to pull out a B.
Heap is one of my favorite teachers at JMU. Sometimes he gets a bad rep for being tough, but that's how you really learn the material. Overall, if you go to class, do the reading, study and make a solid attempt, you will succeed!
Heap's lectures are very interesting and informative. Gives lots of readings that are essential for passing. 11 pop quizzes, keeps 6 best (60%) 2 data projects (20%) and final (20%). I never went to his office hours, but did all the readings and worked hard on the data projects and ended with a B. A is not impossible, but don't count on it.
Heap intimidates you into thinking it is a tough class, but if you do all the readings and go to every class you won't get lower than a C. I consider myself pretty smart and pulled out an A because his grading scale is more than fair, you should be able to have at least 70% easily going into the final. He holds Sunday morning reviews that help ALOT
Only 6 of the 11 quizzes he gives count towards your grade. He has review sessions almost every Sunday, he answers questions and basically tells you everything that is going to be on the "pop" quiz that happens every Tuesday after the review. Do extra work on the data projects, he gives extra credit. Participate and he is nicer with grading. Read.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken at JMU. If you're thinking about it for a gen-ed, skip it. But if it is required for your major you will get SO MUCH out of this class. I learned a ton, but that is because he really pushes you. Do all the readings and take notes on it - he quizzes on that. Extra credit and Sunday study sessions help!
Phil is really there to help you. What professor gives you 11 quizzes and drops 6 of them and also gives you a project and help sessions to boost your grade? I honestly think people who see him as a horrible teacher just do not do there work and are looking for that easy A.
I don't think I've ever done a review of a professor before, but Professor Phillip Heap is an intellectual mastermind within the field of Economics. His class is extensively comprehensive as the class has a solid foundation on the of basis of Macroeconomic theory. I've learned so much that much of many of my beliefs have changed due to Macro. Yuppp
Attendance isn't mandatory, but you won't pass if you don't go. 9 pop quizzes (takes your 5 highest scores). Get ready to read and take notes. He isn't a bad teacher, but it's really hard if you don't think/learn a certain way. Don't take this class if you're more of a visual/kinesthetic learner: will cause A LOT OF STRESS.
The material in this course is tough to grasp but Heap tries his best to help you understand. He drops your lowest 4 quizzes, offers pass sessions on the weekend, and is accessible outside of class. However, expect to be challenged on your understanding on the tests and quizzes. Easier gen-eds out there but highly recommended for cob students
Phil may be one of the toughest teachers i've had at JMU. The topics are confusing and he does his best to explain them, but if you put in the extra time, go to his help sessions, keep up with the reading, and research outside of class, you should do well. Also pop quizzes will ruin your grade if you show up not knowing the material.
Hardest class I've ever taken at JMU. By the end of the semester all I was aiming for was a passing grade because it was THAT HARD. Definitely don't recommend him if economics is a tough subject for you.
Mr. Heap was the man. Yea I got a C but I could have done much better if I wasn't such a bum. As long as you read a little bit and listen to what he says in class, the pretty much weekly quizzes and the tests should be pretty straight. But this man really cares about his students and wants the best for all of them. Take him for sure.
don't do it
Pay attention in class. If you don't understand, go to his office hours (they don't help too much because it's still confusing) just try to get help. Read the textbook and study a lot because you don't know when the quizzes are coming.
I'd avoid taking Heap. He's a funny guy and you will learn a lot with him. But his class is extremely difficult. 8-11 pop quizzes (drops a few), midterm, and final. He does Sunday morning help sessions. Micro is one of the harder COB prereqs so if you end up taking him just read and ask a lot of questions. DO NOT SKIP CLASS.
I took Heap for both ECON200 and ECON201 and I would take him again in a heartbeat. If you go to class, take notes, and read the textbook, you should have no trouble getting a fine grade. Quizzes take place about once a week and he drops a few. He's really caring and willing to help. If you're willing to invest in the class, take him!!
He gives hard ass quizzes every week or two and if you want a good grade you have to study ALOT. Avoid him at all costs.
Professor Heap will care about you as much as you care about his class. Make an effort by going to his review sessions/PASS sessions/his office hours. Once he notices that you make an effort in his class he starts to cut you some slack and is always willing to help you. His pop quizzes are hard af but he only keeps your top 5 grades.
If you're not good at math or Econ already, he's not your man. He takes no less than exceptional and he doesn't appreciate stupid questions. He knows what he's talking about, but the material is dense and he wrote his own text, so he grades harshly. Only pop quizzes and tests, so read EVERYTHING. Very easy to fail, be careful.
This man is not the devil. He knows what he's doing, is very knowledgable, and is actually pretty caring if you show good effort. Just be ready to work hard, as is standard with any harder college class. Go to all of his help sessions on the weekends and you will get an A. He drops 5/10 quizzes, but try to do better on the earlier ones.
This was a HARD class. My advice would be to sit in the front row, participate as much as you can, and go to the pass sessions and saturday morning help sessions. Do all the reading and study a lot cause there are weekly pop quizzes and they are very difficult. He curves your score if he notices you putting in effort so get on his good side.
I studied before every class and still managed to fail almost every pop quiz because he looks for ANY reason to take off points. He takes pride in being a harsh grader and does not clearly explain why he marks things wrong. If you go to his help sessions he grades you less harshly. Apart from that, he is unlikable and extremely rude at times
Take him if you're willing to put in the work. Its worth it if you actually want to learn. He doesnt take any BS, so study, show up to class, and go to the help sessions. Let him know you care. This guy's pretty likable if you do these things. Also, stick it out. If you end up having to take his class, dont be worried about his negative reviews
He really knows what he is talking about, just makes the class a little harder than in needs to be. If you don't go, you'll fail. About 8-10 pop up quizzes, a midterm and a final. Has morning help sessions on the weekends. You get what you put into it with his class, so be ready to work hard.
Heap is a really good, tough professor. He has help sessions on the weekend that are definitely worth going to. He has about 12 quizzes, which are hard. He drops about half of them at the end. He definitely makes you work but if you work hard it's possible to do well.
You will learn the most taking Phil, but be ready to put in the time to study your notes. Note handouts match up perfectly with the slides and the slides are very easy to understand and are very clear. Participate in class. Go to office hours when you get behind. Attend weekend help sessions. Quizzes and exams are very fair and from notes.
Professor Heap is definitely one of the harder teachers you can take for your Econ classes. If your just taking a GenEd I recommend skipping him and taking an easier prof. However, if your a business or Econ major taking his class will greatly benefit and prepare you for your classes ahead.
Grading is based off of pop quizzes, which are difficult even with studying and reading required material, mid term and final. He makes this course way more difficult to succeed in than it has to be. Avoid if possible
I would not recommend taking this class, he teaches Econ 200 and it is already a challenging class. He does not make you feel like a human at times, because he is so demeaning. If can, take this class online or at a community college.
By far the meanest guy I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. Confuses everyone, makes it 1000 times harder than it has to be. If you're late to class by one minute he'll kick you out. Told us he's a "vengeful grader" so piss him off and he'll just fail you. Graphs and power points he presents in lectures are impossible to keep up with.
Expect shameless criticism. He seems to enjoy what he teaches, but his teaching style is not fit for majority of those who like things clear, structured, or visual. Quizzes are not announced and are 50% of your final grade w/ the lowest scores dropped + you have to buy his textbook. Will be taking this class w/ a different Prof next semester.
Heap is an extremely smart guy. He knows what he's talking about and is passionate about what he teaches but, he makes the subject way harder than it has to be. The pop quizzes are difficult. He could assign a ton of reading over the weekend and still give a pop quiz on something from two lectures ago. Avoid if reading is not your thing.
Prof. Heap does not make the class easy. However, if you actually do the readings and pay close attention in class then youll do fine. There are 9 quizzes which he then drops half of them. A midterm worth a quarter of your grade, and an optional final depending on your grade in the class. If your thinking of taking this for a gen ed, don't.
Everyone who says he's "mean" is soft and is probably the same student who does not attend class. If you do the readings, go to class/pay attention, and participate, you will be fine. Maybe the most straight forward, fair class I have ever been in. I would strongly recommend Phil Heap to anyone who is willing to put in the effort.
So here is the deal. Heap knows what he's talking about, he's smart. HOWEVER, he doesn't know how to make econ easier. He makes it and grades hard, and the reading is intense. For someone with no econ experience this was my struggle class. Usually 1 pop quiz a week, question specific ex: read 50+ pages then question on 1 specific saying in the book
Heap is incredibly tough, and if you can't handle a bit of teasing/sarcastic dry humor, then just skip him. His quizzes are brutally graded, but not unfair. He makes sure you can't BS your way out of the quizzes, which are all based on out of class reading and notes in class. Heap makes sure you learn in his class, but you have to work for it.
Prof. Heap is a wonderful guy, and the class itself (as a gen ed) shouldnt be that hard, but he tries to make it that way. 9 or 10 quizzes that are based off of 1)reading 2)that weeks lecture and 3) some graph or formula learned. As long as you dont talk to others or be on your phone, he genuinely will help you out. Would probably take again, maybe
Heap is a TOUGH grader. There are pop quizzes every week and you basically have to memorize everything you read and heard from the lecture because the questions are specific. This class is hard, but it is possible to do well. People that completely fail his class probably cheated or didn't show up.
Heap is a tough grader and even tougher on students in the classroom. He would call students out for extremely petty reasons and put you on the spot in front of the entire class. If he thought you weren't following the material well in the classroom he would call you out and make you feel uncomfortable about it. Overall, poor prof w/ bad practices
Tough grader, serious about what he is teaching. Class material is very hard and need to pay attention. He is nice though and cares about his students. Very helpful outside of class and with reviewing problems you may not understand.
He's not great at explaining the material and is critical when it comes to grading
Professor Heap definitely makes you work hard to get an A, but if you go to class, study, do the readings, and participate, yu will do fine. I heard so many people complain about him, but those were the same students that joked about not doing any readings. In my 4 years as a bio major, this was one of the hardest yet fulfilling classes I took
Dr. Heap is great, but you need to go to every class. His class is really lecture heavy and missing one class can leave you really far behind. Grades based on a midterm and a final which is worth 50% of your grade, and the other half is from 8-9 pop quizzes, but he only takes the best 5. Quizzes are largely based on readings that he assigns
Overall it's a hard class, but it's Economics so I wouldn't expect anything less. Heap explains everything you need to know in his lectures, so don't miss class. You must read everything if you want to pass the pop quizzes. He had Sunday help sessions every week and he took notice if you were there. My participation helped me get an A-.
So here's the deal with Professor Heap: At the beginning of the semester, you probably won't like him because he is sarcastic and kinda makes fun of his students, and he gives difficult pop quizzes about once a week. However as the semester goes on you'll start to like him. With that said, the class is still very hard so get ready to work.
Avoid
Very hard class. He cares about the class but doesn't care about his students. If you don't read you won't pass. Heap can be a real ass, I would recommend not to take this mans class.
Prof. Heap is a great guy, and loves when students interact with him(expect when belittles you from time to time) still It's a very interesting class and requires lots of hard work. Don't get it twisted this class is a struggle, and it requires the reading. The only true way to pass Heap's class is to pay attention and read everything he assigns
Very intelligent and knows what he's talking about but is a terrible professor. Lectures are hard to follow and doesn't simplify anything down. Assigns a lot of readings and gives pop quizzes almost every class. His tests are almost impossible even if you do all the readings, see him for help, and get help outside of the class. Avoid him.
I love this guy but you need to work for your grade. make sure you read textbook & outside readings he posts. these readings are important! class isn't mandatory but he notices who shows up, which could benefit you. 10 quizzes, keeps highest 5, two exams, drops lower grade, & a final. so quizzes are 50% of grade, 1 exam 25% and final 25%.
Phil is smart. He really knows his stuff, explains it well, and is inspirational. However, he is a tough grader, and the quizzes are brutally graded. Get ready to read the textbook closely and pay close attention in class. The class was really interesting and was a good thing to take as an Econ major. For a non-business major, take an easier prof.
Makes you read about 75-100 pages a night plus useless articles. Pop Quizzes are hard but if you interpret the articles EXACTLY the same way he wants you to think you could be fine. Not helpful at all. THERE ARE MUCH BETTER PROFESSORS. Before the final, I had to ask my AP Macro teacher from HS for help because Heap was of no help at all.
avoid seriously
Horrible. Worst gen ed ever please take something else
Class enrollment is starting. DO NOT TAKE. IF you do I wish you luck
One of the hardest graders I've ever encountered. Also does not post grades on canvas so get ready to try and calculate your own grade through his confusing grade system. Has about 8-9 pop quizzes throughout the course and assigns reading beforehand. If your answer isn't exactly what he's looking for then he will assume that you are making it up!!
Take econ with Phil if you're a business major, otherwise, this is a very tough gen ed. Phil makes you really think about the concepts and challenged my critical thinking skills. The Sunday help sessions are definitely worthwhile. I think he intimidates a lot of students who don't really know him but he's truly a nice guy. Lots of reading.
Definitely would not recommend Heap for Econ 201. Doesnt post grades on canvas at all so you have to continuously calculate your grade. Lots of pop quizzes. Very tough grader. Will take points off if he thinks you made up an answer. Doesnt allow students to get up and go to bathroom during class as he feels its disrespectful.
Sat through this class the whole semester. Never skipped. Didn't understand one thing and he was not helpful. Very judgmental.
I don't understand his teaching style, no slides just lecture, and he talks fast.
Hardest proffesor that I have ever encountered. Gives a lot of pop quizzes that are mainly on the seperate readings he assigns. If you mess up a little bit he marks it wrong. Would not reccomend taking his class.
Heap is a great Economics professor. He is intelligent and doesn't just lecture about definitions straight from the book. He actually teaches the material and connects it to current economic problems students face. (Did a whole lecture on why college is so expensive) He is a very intense grader though. Hard work and office hour visits necessary.
Read some of the reviews before I took his class and thought how hard could it be? I was so wrong, whatever you do avoid having him as your professor. If you do take him make sure he knows who you are (go to office hours, raise your hand, ask questions, etc.)
Incredibly unhelpful, unprofessional, and uncaring. He seems to bully and ridicule his students to inflate his own ego. While hes intelligent, and knows his material, he has not the first clue on how to translate it and make it accessible for students. Avoid this professor at all costs, you will not have a good semester or final grade.
Professor Heap is extremely intelligent; he has great analogies in his lectures. But it will be the hardest class of your semester. I only received a B after reading the textbook every night, going to office hours weekly, and attending the review sessions. If youre willing to do the work youll be ok.
Enrollment is coming up! FOR FALL 2020! Do NOT take him. You will regret it!! Especially if econ isn't your thing and you aren't willing to dedicate all of your time to interpret his class. So intimidating. Sunday study sessions do not help. Class is a waste of time and doesn't make sense. I always went to everything. Office hrs suck too. DON'TAKE
Don't skip the last class before break... it will help you
Plain and simple, if you aren't an economics major/if you are looking to fulfill the requirement and not be depressed, do not take phil heap. He's an acquired taste. You'll either love him or dislike him there is no in-between. He uses fun examples to engage the class when he teaches like beer, cigarettes, etc. He knows his stuff. He's just tough.
Incredible teacher, doesn't take any crap from students but expects great things of his students. attendance not mandatory but if you miss lectures it's gonna be rough. Curves heavily, tests are fairly specific. Holds office hours on weekends which really shows he goes the extra mile. Humorous lecturer.
AWFUL. Heap accused 40+ students of cheating on an open note final exam because they looked up one question which he reworded so it wasnt in your text book. He never specified the parameters of to which degree of open note it was but he effectively failed all of those students. He is a bully, stubborn, and will not admit hes wrong.
I took this class for gen-ed credit because it sounded interesting to me at the time, but if you are taking this: good luck, tests are hard, and be ready to put in the work. Don't be discouraged though, Heap does a good job at being fair to his students too.
Phil is a funny professor. He would always use funny examples like beer or cigarettes to engage his students. Knows his stuff and if you pay attention and do the readings you will be fine. Only downside is that he is a hardass grader but he curves heavy to help his students.
Econ is a tough class whatever the professor you take. Heap is a good choice, however. Just make sure you do your readings (very emphasized), pay attention in class, and take notes on the things he says, as that is what is very often on the test.
Really awful
I sat through this class the whole semester and his teaching style was so confusing. I went to help sessions and talked with him after class. Yes i got a C which is average but people go into the final with F's. He does heavily curve which is how I went from an D to C. Stressful gen-ed!! Caused me a lot of panic attacks & im not a stressful person
Dont listen to the awful reviews. If you show up to class and respect him and not ask stupid questions youll be fine. His class is tough but its not too bad. If you take good notes in class and listen you will be fine.
Phil's econ class is a lot of interesting lectures and examples, but he gets the point across well. I really liked his class and definitely would recommend it. Friday tests tho, which are 5 questions and honestly not too bad just because he drops 5 of them at the end of the semester.
I really enjoyed my time in this class and thought Professor Heap was a very good teacher. He gives pop quizzes through the semester and chapter quizzes. I strongly recommend you begin working on your final project early and update it regularly.
avoid. horrible class. I guess you can take him if you want too but good luck
Do not take this unaccepting and insulting professor. He openly disrespects students and refuses to make any changes in order to make his classroom more inclusive. He speaks until his voice is the only one heard and is unreceptive to other people's opinions. Unless you can tolerate someone that is egotistical and behind the times, don't enroll
Have to read 2 chapters a week and take notes. Only thing making your grade is tests. The test has a multiple choice section and a writing section. He makes class super boring.
Average grade on every test we had so far was around a 50% lectures are hard to understand and just trying to teach yourself the content through the textbook doesn't work cuz the tests questions make no sense and are confusing af.
AVOID!!! I have made straight As in every college-level course I have taken... except for this awful class. Lectures are pointless, except for the ex problems, because he just barely talks about the heavy information from the textbook. You will learn on your own from the book. Grades are just weekly quizzes and exams, so there is NO help with grade
He can be difficult but if you go and talk to him he's very understanding of difficulties and will help you. The material is hard but he does a great job of explaining it - if you don't go to class you won't understand it. His lectures can be boring and there are weekly quizzes, and he doesn't allow technology.
Phil is a great professor. The class itself is very difficult but he is always available for extra help and explains this clearly. He seems a little intimidating but he is very nice and understanding. Show up to class!! He gives little pop quizzes but he gives a free 10 points for just completing it. Read the articles and chapters he assigns!!
Heap is a great prof. Only 3 assessments and they count for a big part of your grade but he assigns quizzes every Sunday that will help raise it. Often gives EC to those who regularly show up to class since attendance isn't required. You will not pass without attending since tests are lecture-heavy but they are incredibly beneficial and engaging.
I have never met a professor as condescending and egotistical as Heap. Always makes you feel terrible and insignificant when asking questions or for help. His tests, which pretty much makes up 90% of your grade, are extremely difficult to even get a 70% or higher (I have read every chapter of the macro textbook and taken notes for every lecture)
Don't get me wrong, Prof. Heap can be a prick. But you WILL learn in his class. He will put you on the spot, give pop quizzes, and occasionally publicly embarrass you. It will force you to come prepared and care about learning. Go to his office hours... he is helpful and shockingly nice. Don't be scared to take Heap... you'll survive :-)
Prof. Heap is my favorite professor that I've had to far at JMU. Tough grader, but good teacher and helpful should you approach him. I've taken him for 2 300-level economics classes so I can't testify as to how he is for intro courses but he is fantastic should you take him. Highly recommend.
Game Theory is a tough subject but Prof. Heap will get you through it. He gives outlines and easy quizzes on Sundays to help your grade. Beware the final though, it is unlike anything you will ever see before or after you take it.
I dropped this class because I was failing after only 1 test. I thought that I was understanding what I was reading and learning only to find that I didn't learn anything. No electronics are allowed and it is lecture heavy; there were also worksheets to complete before class that he expected you to print off and work on. Maybe pick a different Prof
This class is all lecture and nothing else. weekly sunday quizzes on a lockdown browser. He doesnt take attendance, so half the class doesnt show for any class except test day, which you will probably fail if you dont show up to normal classes. The average for tests are Ds. He's cool, but the lectures can be mind numbingly boring if u dislike econ.
professor heap is a horrible professor. has very dry humor and will commonly mock students. weekly quizzes online every sunday and exams in person. no other homework and graded by little material. do not recommend.
Phil Heap put bluntly is rude. Seeing him straight up pick on students wasn't a one time thing, he is not sympathetic at all, weekly quizzes are around 10 questions in 15 minutes with word problems and fill in the blank. Summary: He looks down on his students, doesn't care how you're affected, is difficult, and overall a bad pick.
I liked Phil Heap. He is very difficult, but he makes sure you actually understand ECON rather than just get an easy grade. I would say if you are a business major, it will be beneficial to take his class. Buy the textbook, it is worth it.
This is a difficult class. It takes a lot of studying time outside of class to truly do well. Heap is incredibly smart, but he is a tough one. There are weekly quizzes, but they do require some preparing. The test can also be very difficult. He gives students outlines, where they can follow the presentation and take notes, take advantage of them.
Heap is definitely very strict and will not tolerate any kind of nuisance in his class and will call you out if you say something dumb, however, he does care about his students and gives extra credit options. The way he teaches actually makes students learn the material.
Heap is not a bad professor, but he is tough. I would describe him as a very practical person, he knows ECON well. The weekly quizzes are difficult and give you a minute per question, which is impossible when you have numerical problems. The exams are difficult as well and the study guide project rubric is pretty vague. Lectures are engaging though
Professor Heap is not the best option for any economics class. His tests are nothing compared to the quizzes and are not based on the notes that he gives.
Professor Heap is not a bad option for Econ 200. He knows the subject very well and provides a lot of help during office hours. He says that attendance is optional but if you do not show up to the lectures you will fail. He teaches extremely fast during lectures. Be ready for weekly quizzes, very difficult exams, and a group project.
Heap was overall a decent professor, his lectures usually weren't too boring. Attendance is not mandatory but to do well in his class you definitely need to go to class. 1 Group project at the end of year, and his tests are very difficult.
For this class being a GenEd, it is rather difficult. Unless you are a business major, or economics really interests you, I wouldn't recommend taking this GenEd. Heap is actually one of the better professors, but even he says that his average grade in the class is a C- to a C. Lectures are optional but are very helpful. Weekly quizzes, tough class.
Phil Heap is one of the best teachers that I have had at JMU so far, even if he is difficult. He thoroughly understands the material to guide the students through it, as well as being able to keep the attention of the students through how engaging and sometimes comedic he tries to be. Quizzes on Sunday are annoying, but do help the grade in the end
Just don't take him
Would not recommend at all, only good thing is his office hours. Be prepared to try insanely hard, get a tutor, and still get 60's on everything and barely end with a B.
Heap is a good lecturer but seems to dislike young people as a whole. Tests are hard but he provides psets which sometimes have questions replicated in the tests. He doesn't take attendance but there are test questions on topics that you only cover in class. No technology allowed. He is mid.
I dropped this class very early on. He only grades on exams. His exam questions make no sense. He's rude. Not allowed to use the restroom (he will lock you out of the class). You cannot use any technology if you have your phone out it is ten percent off. He doesn't post his lectures. He expects you to read a lot. I do not recommend this teacher.
This is a very tough class. Graded only on tests and the averages are usually in the 60's. If you go to office hours and review sessions he will help you and wants you to succeed. He has a strict no technology and bathroom policy. To succeed in this class get ready to spend hours studying. I would not recommend unless very interested in econ.
only grades are tests and they are super confusing. Don't take him
Although class is not mandatory you must go to class because it is the only way to access your information. Heap's class and tests are hard but not impossible. He is very intimidating in class but a lot easier to talk to and understand if you go to office hours.
Very rude towards his class as a whole, and seems to pride himself on it. Sometimes, he inputs his own beliefs, further confusing students. He also only posts rudimentary notes that do not help clarify any questions you may have outside of class. Take his class only if you have to.
take as last resort not too bad but for econ being a hard subject in general he does not help the case on three grades being exams but does throw bonus points at you. class not mandatory but must go to really get anything
Worst professor I have. His class is lecture based and the only grades are 4 tests and a final. During his lectures, he moves too quickly for students to take accurate notes and the topics of his lectures hardly transfer over to the tests. Also doesn't provide a study guide so you are stuck with your inaccurate notes to study. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!
I took Heap for International Econ and it was genuinely the worst class I've ever had. I have never had a professor so rude as a human and unforgiving on exams. The class consisted of 3 exams, a group presentation, and a final. The exams are on content that is not even in the textbook and his lectures are impossible to understand. Do not take him.
Rude professor? This man expects you to know the material and actually cares about his students. Great guy that gives opportunities for success (extra credit) and is friendly. Heap drops your lowest exam score, so he does care about your success. Just study and you'll be fine.
Hes not a bad professor hes just rude to students who dont put 100% effort in his class. He doesnt post notes online either so prettymuch take him if you plan on attending every single class and want to study hours a week. The only study material he provided was practice quizzes which he closed a week before the exam for no reason so good luck
Professor Heap is a good professor who wants his students to learn and succeed. The content in the class is quite difficult and students are expected to read textbook chapters each week to learn. 3 exams throughout the year and a difficult final. If you don't want to spend 8+ hours reading chapters and studying, YOU WILL NOT DO WELL.
Does not allow you to take notes on anything but paper, and he will call anyone out for it. Your grade is only based on 3 test grades and the final. There is a pretty big curve at the end though. Doesn't teach at an introductory level, so you have to learn most of the content from the textbook. Would highly recommend finding a different professor.
phil heap is the worst professor i've ever had i honestly don't know how he still has a job at jmu. he is so rude to students and after every test we take he yells at the class and degrades us for our low scores. like dude its your fault? that class gives me literal anxiety. do not take him
Skip class won't pass. Heap is a fast lecturer and only allows notes on paper, so if you didn't catch something, you're not getting it. But he does see and appreciate people who work hard, come to class, and go to his office hours. He was very difficult, but if you REALLY put in the work and participate, you can do well.
Lots of reading, not many grades, hard ass grader, doesn't explain everything just stands at his desk and talks, kinda funny though
Phil Heap is mixed for me. He is a very funny guy and always uses Alcohol or Drugs as examples for economics; this for me kept me entertained. However, the amount of detail and depth that this dude gets into is insane. My classes test average was around 60%, be prepared to spend long nights and weekends studying.
Grading consists of weekly problem sets and 4 tests (the lowest is dropped). His lectures are pretty all over the place. Problem sets and tests are all very challenging. If I could go back in time, I would never have taken him. Lowest grade I have ever gotten in my life and it isn't close.
The class has 3 tests (only the best 2 count) and a final. Every weekend you have a 20+ question homework assignment. His lectures were dull and boring, but he'd randomly start using examples with drugs and alcohol that would grab my attention. His tests barely contain any in-class material so definitely read chapters and everything else in book.
Professor Heap gives very hard tests and is an hard grader but curves the grades at the end of the class. Attendance was optional but many of the questions on the exams were specific things from his lectures.
Professor Heap runs a challenging class, but if you stay engaged and utilize resources like unstuckstudy ai, you can succeed. Attendance is a must, and the textbook is essential. With hard work, this class is manageable.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS, his lectures feel like casual conversations rather than structured lessons. He speaks quickly and doesn't provide notes, making it hard to follow. The exams are challenging and don't reflect the material. I only understand the content thanks to YouTube videos. Save yourself the frustration and choose a different course.
Phil Heap is actually the worst professor I have ever had at JMU. He nearly made me drop COB all together. He just gives you work without actually teaching on how to do it and homework assignments were weighed really heavily in class. Everytime we would get something wrong he just puts an X on the question and doesn't give feedback even when asked.
DO NOT take Phil Heaps class. He made the class so hard to pass. The lectures were so boring and seemed very unorganized. He gives homework but does not explain the material well at all. He is a tough grader yet doesn't explain what you got wrong on the homework problems. The professor is rude and is not helpful at all.
You have to engage in this class to succeed. Assigned readings before every lecture, but they're helpful. He can be harsh but warms up throughout the semester. He is happy to help you during office hours or "Sundays with Phil", but you need to reach out. I wouldn't recommend this class to someone who just wants an easy A.
The class is difficult if you do not study at all or do the readings which is likely most of these reviews did not. A lot of readings and they can be lengthy. The exams can be hard but I would make a quilt with everything, study it for a week, and get an A. I have no finished this class but it is for sure do able for anyone if you put in effort.
ummm good luck. was supposed to be an intro to microecon but he acts like we know a lot already. there is sooo much reading in this class. i do the readings which take a WHILE and i do all the homework and i still currently have a D+ in the class because the exams are SO HARD. he talks way too fast and i am unable to write down some notes in time.
Take literally any other teacher for micro besides him. He gives outlines for each lecture but they are very little help. The lectures are very confusing and hard to follow. He has three tests and you can drop the lowest but they are very hard. The short answer questions are lecture specific and you HAVE to read everything he gives you.
Phil Heap is very, very interesting. There was no technology allowed in his class, and you could not leave to use the restroom. His tests are very difficult, he is brutally honest, and he expects a lot from you. However, he offers plenty of extra credit and help; so long as you keep up and ride the wave, you will be fine.
Worst Professor of all time do not take
Ratings are skewed. If you are engaged he will like you and help. Just show up and participate. Test questions pulled directly from the homeworks. No test is that hard my average was like a 91. Hard course so people blame it on him but any professor would be hard. Also many extra credit opportunities and curves decently well.
I've heard horror stories about his micro class, but I enjoyed his macro class. Professor Heap knows his stuff and if you pay attention in class and take time to understand the material outside of class if you have to, you can succeed.
Professor Heaps assigns textbook readings that relate minimally to in-class packets and lectures. Even students who took him before struggle because of his lack of organization and communication. He teaches as if he expects you to know everything he is speaking on and it is safe to say I am disappointed in his course and teaching.
I took 201 with Phil and felt more successful than in this class. The textbook and lectures don't always align, and some test questions are based on lecture discussions—so attendance is key. Lectures use the Socratic method. Weekly problem sets draw from readings and lectures. Not awful, but it's a tough ride.
Dude gets a lot of hate for no reason. He's a genuine guy who knows his stuff and wants you to learn. Exams aren't easy buy are doable if you take the time to study. He gives a TON of extra credit so thats nice. He drops your lowest exam and provides feedback to missed questions. I recommend taking him but only if you're responsible.
I will never take this class again. He's a nice dude who knows what he's talking about, but he tries to make everything so much harder. His tests are so hard, i studied so much for them and knew it, but he would never give me above a 60.
He's a really great teacher with a bad rep because his class is hard. He really wants you to read the textbook which I didn't do and still ended up fine, so if you do read it, you will do exceptional. He knows a lot about economics and cares about his students. Just a hard class, but if you're willing to put in the effort I would reccomend.
People like to say he is one of the worst economics professors. But honestly, I think it's just the fact that you actually have to put in the effort to learn rather than ChatGPT everything. As long as you show up, do the readings, and actually try on the problem sets, you're fine. However, I wish they didn't have a time limit.
Avoid. The outlines he gives for tests do not correlate and are very little help. I do all the homework and the readings and still can't get above a 55% on a test. He is very hard to follow at times and may randomly call on you and if you don't know the answer he will be rude about it.
Honestly dude kinda grew on me, but does the most. Thank GOD for his amazing curve because I had a C all semester despite it being the class I put the most effort into. SO much reading. Definitely recommend going to office hours
He told our class he loves seeing people fail, and sending them to court. This guy is brutal and I would avoid him at all costs
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES! He is by far the rudest, most disrespectful professor/teacher i've ever had. I dread going to every class because he makes it so unenjoyable by cussing at students and giving confusing lectures. Your grade is almost entirely based on tests (which are so hard and no cheat sheet). Just trust - avoid at all costs.
He isnot very understanding of medical absence. He makes rude comments during class and is not reachable out side of class. All of his exams are way harder than the homework and class material, and if you don't go to class, theres no online material at all.
Wanted to cry when walking to his class. This class is impossible. Phil is a somewhat nice guy if you show up and don't mess up anything. Other than that he hates his students and honestly it seems like he wants them to fail. He knows a lot so I will say he's good with the material but that's it. Just don't take bro, he's not a 3, he's a -1.
Where do I even start, if I could give advice to anyone going to take microeconomics I will immediately tell them to not take Phil Heap. Lectures and tests are very confusing. Microeconomics is hard in it's own but I strongly believe he makes it harder than it needs to be. If you care about your sanity DO NOT TAKE PHIL HEAP.
People leaving bad reviews just don't put in the effort. I've never taking an econ class before and i'm sitting at a 92 going into the final. Lock in gang.
He "encourages" his students to ask questions but on the first day he will tell you your question is stupid and to figure it out. He is very his way about teaching and explaining and the exams are extremely difficult unless you memorize the problem sets and all lecture outlines. He expects too much from his students and does not curve any tests.
I did not like him at all, I found him rude, his tests are ridiculously hard for no reason. You really need to read what he assigns and watch the videos because there will be free response questions on the tests. Also make sure you take the problem sets seriously bc many of the questions are on the test.
He seems like he wants his students to fail. Gives you a study guide then makes the test the exact same as the study guide, except way harder. Don't take unless you want to do way more studying than you have to.
DO NOT TAKE! The only reason people get decent grades is because he offers a lot of extra credit, which although attendance isn't taken if you don't go to class you have no hope, as some of the test questions are taken directly from his lectures and extra credit is given based of in class activities. His tests are so hard for no reason.
He said he was going to curve our grade at the end of the year, and NEVER DID. He is honestly the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. I studied so hard for his exams and still did bad. he actually wants to see you fail and do terribly in his class. I am a straight-A student in all my other COB classes. STAY AWAY
Based on what ive heard from previous students the grading structure seems to change all the time. For me most of the points came from pop quizzes. Other years didnt have any quizzes. The tests are NOT hard, 50% of the test material is from the problem sets that he gives u tons of time to get done. You do have to read the textbook to know whats up.
The tests are NOT hard, 50+% of the test material is directly from homework, in class slides, and required readings. You have to read the text book to know whats up. We had lots of pop quizzes that were pretty hard, but not impossible. He seems rough at the beginning of the year but he's actually chill.
Phil Heap was the WORST professor I have ever had. Tests are extremely hard and majority of your grade. All quizzes are pop quizzes. Very rude and lecture slides were non existent. Doesn't even let you take notes while he's giving lectures. No phones allowed, and matter of fact will not even let you leave the classroom to go to the bathroom.
AVOID! as a person, Phil is funny & knows a lot about econ & offers a lot of office hours. but his TESTS & QUIZZES ARE HARD. average grade for midterm was 49% & 39% of people withdraw from his class. grades are mainly from POP QUIZZES which are based on LOTS of readings. if you love yourself and don't want to study econ everyday - RUN.
Don't take him so many better professors to take for this course. He knows his stuff but is a terrible teacher and was always in a bad mood.
Awful professor, never met someone in the class who didnt dislike him. talked to my advisor and he told me hes never heard anything good either. avoid this class at all time unless you want your life to revolve around a 200 level economics class
Awful. If u pu to lectures and remember every little detail, then ur chillin. Uses tiny details from in-class discussions on his exams. Doesn't allow access to class slides on canvas. Bad lectures. Not a nice bone in his body. Asked him no more than two questions at office hours and couldn't give me an answer without saying something snarky.
this guy SUCKS. I WARN YOU DO NOT TAKE PHIL HEAP. he brags about having an average of 65% on his midterms and finals and doesnt curve anything. He also does pop quizzes from the very first week of class to the end of the year and they are each worth about 100 points each. The only grades you have for the entire class is pop quizzes, midterm, final
the class is difficult. Heap will not give you an inch on quizzes only giving pop quizzes and making exam review material have a deadline. he is also a tough grader. saying this he is the funniest teacher I have, and he makes himself available with review sessions every Sunday and frequent office hours. participate in lectures and read to succeed.
This class is hard in general, not because he makes it hard. All quizzes are pop quizzes and they make up most of your grade, but you only need 6 graded. He's always available for extra help, and gives a TON of extra credit. I'm sitting at a 98 going into the final, so legit just pay attention and you'll be fine.
The material is relatively challenging, but if you go to every class and put in work before lectures to read and get to know the material, you will succeed. Professor Heap is a nice guy when you actually talk to him. He can be a little standoffish in class, but just do your work, and he'll like you, and you'll get a good grade.
Wasn't a bad guy in the sense of going up to him and asking questions. He does make you feel like it's common sense but besides that his office hours usually help. He is a very tough grader and only has eight grades in the books for six POP quizzes and the midterm and final. There are only quizzes and finals for your grade so be prepared to study.
this man was put on earth to ruin students lives and sauté their love for education slowly but surely. He is genuinely evil. Most neurotic human being i have ever had the displeasure of meeting the fact that my tuition helped pay his bills fills me with rage and shame. he is determined to fail any student and suck any life you have left in you.
teaches like he has a deep hatred for his students, ur better off being taught by satan. it was a pain to hear these halfhearted lectures, and deal with your dismissive nature and apathy. Professors have an obligation to help students and not be condescending. You've been a sorry excuse of a professor with the little dignity you have left.
His tests are incredibly hard, but if you participate in his class even a little bit he will curve your grade at the end and help you out. I think he's a pretty good professor, but he curved my 59 to a 76 so I'm biased.
