Big mets fan, obvious republican, obsessed with Seinfield. Any teacher who lets on this much about his personal life is gonna be fairly easy, an ego thing. Just read the text and bring in sociological articles, and you're set. He also does an excellent review before each exam, there are only 3.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS GUY!BORING! GIVES 10 ESSAY QUESTIONS ON EXAMS (3) WITH 1HR 15MIN TO COMPLETE AND HE WANTS YOU TO GO INTO SPECIFIC DETAILS. VERY UNFAIR, NOT CONCERNED WITH STUDENT'S PROGRESS. VERY ARROGANT
Interesting instructor with lots of different ideas about teaching sociology. Uses handouts and videos in addition to textbook and lecturs. Exams are challenging but fair. I would take him again for other sociology courses.
worst class ive ever taken. worst professor ive ever had. the class is a joke and professor is never prepaired. mind numbingly boaring. would be easy BUT professor can decide to put 20 questions on the final about 1 handout that was never discussed and nobody read!!!! bad teacher!
I would strongly recommend this course. Not just long lectures but nice use of video documentaries and class discussion. Professor Lewis is very accessible for questions.
HARD WORK BUT YOU LEARN ALOT. THAT IS WHY I CAME TO COLLEGE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Hes a cool guy nothing personal but his f'n tests are way too hard!!!! He gives 10 essay questions to be answered in complete detail and he only gives u 1hr and 15min! Are you kidding? He doesnt really care whether or not his students finish the test. Nice guy but dont recommend this class.

Hard to get an A in this class because the exams are essays, but very likeable & pleasant teacher. I would take another class with him if I could. I got a B+
He is real hard, and i hated his tests as well as the rest of the class.
I really hard class where you had to memorize like every word in the book. I really dont understand why we had to memorize stupid names or facts that we will never ever need to know!!! He is a very lazy teacher, and doesnt care much.
For a summer class this was a really good experience. The documentaries made the lectures very clear. I would strongly recommend this professor!!
Nice professor, interesting class & he tied sports into society nicely. However, it was tough to get an A in his class. He does help those students that do not understand the materials by explaining his examples; but most of his exam questions were not from class discussions. If you do not keep up with his reading assignments, you will not do well.
My first impression was that prof lewis was very strict and difficult. After the course was over I realized how good he was at explaining things and how much he was willing to go over topics till I understood them. I would recommend him highly!
Excellent
clear, tests not too hard - multiple choice, not cumulative, only annoying thing is a group paper. thinks he is smart and that no one read the chapters... but overall not difficult class
Clear - interesting course. Mult choice tests Nice guy
He is a real pleasure. Down to erath and really cares. All around great guy. Highly recommnded.

I wish all my instructors were like prof Lewis. He is very easy to understand and approachable.
He puts TOO much emphasis on class participation/bringing in articles, attendance doesn't cut it. Even if u get 100's on tests, he'll take off pts for not participating. His exams aren't extremely difficult but he does give a bunch of questions that see if you really studied, went through all the material with a fine teeth comb, be really detailed.
Excellent course - very visual. Excellent professor.
People who like him must be on drugs. he treats students like high school kids:attendance, participation, no laptops. his tests are not hard but he asks stupid questions (regardling motives, numbers, dates, stats)he takes points off for a lack of participation but focuses on his favorite students so others have no chance to speak up.
This was not an "easy" class, but I learned quite a bit and I got a grade I was pleased with. I didn't mind discussing the material in class unlike some backrow students who didn't put in much effort. I would take another class with Lewis.
Highly Recommend this class. This instructor was very patient and answered my e-mails very quickly. I enjoyed the class.
There were 3 exams and no paper. 20% was for participation. Overall, a good course....
Very interesting course that combines documentaries and lectures. You have to show up or you can easily fall behind. Exams are fair. I highly recommend this course and this professor.
Good professor that encourages participation even though some students didn't seem to get it. He was pleasant and knowledgeable.
In reflecting back on this course, I think it might have been one of the best I've taken in college. This instructor openly discusses the inequalities against racial and ethnic groups and the crimes committed by the US in history. I contacted the instructor several times by e-mail and got quickly, helpful responses. I would strongly recommend this
Interesting class. In the beginning you can't figure Professor Lewis out, but then he turns out to be a pretty interesting and knowledable professor. Doesn't make it too difficult for the student and you learn a lot from his course. I enjoyed it.
This class can be intimidating at first. The expectations are that you paid attention in previous Soc classes. I found it to be a goo d experience and I would recommend it to serious students.
mutiple choice tests, no papers, hybrid course requires short essays for weeks class does not meet; easy class if you do the reading; just 1 textbook
Absolutely recommend. Bright professor, very honest discussion about slavery and other civil rights violations. Moderately difficult exams - Online five weeks.
A must take!
my favorite class at queens so far. I have already told my friends they will get alot of out it. Hybrid structure is great!!!!!
At first I did not like the class, because the assignment appears to be very hard. He also appears to be arrogrant, but I think his bark is worse than is bite and I think he puts fear in you so you can do well.Got a good grade in the end when I thought I was not going to. His finals count for 70% of the grade. He's alright.
Kept my interest. Love the online weeks, very caring professor. Recommend....
Prof Lewis is the most arrogant condescending professor I ever had. 5 weeks of the class is online, but you have to write two 300 word entry and respond with two 100 word entries. His exam is 40 multiple choice but it's 12 pages long. He focuses on dates and insignificant nonsense trick questions. The entire test is a trick. DON'T TAKE HIM
I had Professor Lewis last year for the Intensive writing section. He was a great motiviator and lecturer and helped me get into grad school. I totally recommend 381W
This has been a very enjoyable class for me so far. I would recommend it based on the first six weeks
I did well in this class, strongly recommend
Soc of Sports was the most fun class I have taken at QC
THIS CLASS CONVINCED ME TO DECLARE AS A SOC MAJOR - VERY HELPFUL PROF
Loved this class...
Do not take this professor. I have attended 4 cuny colleges already. I have experience with the professors. This professor does not care about the students at all. He gave me a d grade and I did at least a b level of work. His tests are very hard multiple choice and it is very difficuilt. You will not learn anything from this class. He is lazy.
He's an amazing guy. If you just read the book - or remotely pay attention during class & take simple notes on what he says - you're bound to pass. Extremely enjoyable. If you need another class & want an easy & fun one I definately recommend.
very cool hybrid format - five weeks online - I take lewis again - funny, smart prof
sarcastic professor
I found this to be a very challenging course with the combination of political science and sociology. Strongly recommend
Recommend. Friendly, bright professor. Only issue is that sometimes he seems a little frustrated with the slackers in teh class. Since I wasn't one of them, I enjoyed the course alot
Cool prof
Honestly if you do your work throughout the semester and focus on his points you will not have anything to worry about. I did my work and attended his classes and received a B+.
So far this is the best class I've taken at Qc
Hybrid rules! Only there half the time is great. Coool prof
If you want a great learning experience, Prof. Lewis is the person to turn to. I took 211 and 381 with him and wished I could take all my SOC courses with him. He is extremely intelligent and will ask questions on the things you should have learned in 101. If you want to slack off, don't take his class, but if you really want to learn take him.
I dont know what these guys are talking about. Prof Lewis is very intelligent i agree with that but very arrogant. He thinks he knows it all, very tricky on his exams. It seems that he wants to trick you as much as possible so you can fail the course.
By far and away the best course at QC.
Strongly recommend
Amazing knowledge, understanding, and ability to teach with excitement and interest. Profoundly affected my understanding of sociology.
GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!!!!! He goes over everything that he covers in class. I almost flunked the class if it wasnt for his office hours.
Lewis is a great professor. He's funny and if you listen there shouldn't be anything about the class you don't understand. Has regular quizzes, they're easy. So unless you're looking for a class that you can skip all the time, there's no reason not to take this course
I agree with the last rater, very good teacher. I'd take him again
Nothing more to say...great class
I wanted this class to be more interesting. Nice prof but the lectures were basically what you already read in the book to prepare for class. He really didn't add anything. Fairly easy class though. Hybrid was cool.
Not an "easy" hybrid course, but a very bright, caring prof. I recommend....
WORST PROFESSOR IN THE HISTORY OF QUEENS COLLEGE. HE THINKS HE'S ALL THAT, NOT WILLING TO HELP AND HIS CLASS IS JUST A WASTE OF TIME.
He made the course so much more interesting and easier to understand. Got a B+ in the course, and hardly ever had to touch my textbook. Very funny guy, and down to earth! I wish every teacher was like him!
He's very prepared and expects students to be prepared for class. Good experience.
Excellent class
Possibly the most patient prof Ive had. Deals with the slackers as well as the strong students equally. Very enjoyable class, lots of humor
down to earth and polite. very compassionate toward students and says hello if he recognizes you around campus. Online assignments aren't that bad.
He's one of the worst professor in QC! He's strict and difficult. Expects too much for undergraduates. He really does not care for the students. Recommend not to take him.
Very good professor. My favorite overall. Taught clearly. Very knowledgable.
Wish my other professors were as prepared and interesting as Professor Lewis. Gives detailed feedback in drafts and returns quizes and papers very quickly which most QC profs don't. I would take him again
he makes the material so easy to understand that it looks like a joke. he's awsome. hes fun, makes you laugh and still teaches you everything
Recommend this professor!
generally nice, honest guy. highly suggest taking his class. he's extremely clear through his lectures that he is actually interested in what he's teaching (and makes things interesting)
Some people love him, but I can see how the less prepared students would not. Exams are on the easy side. Hybrid format is very cool.
Interesting class
So much more than other classes I have taken at queens. Like night and day. Take this class.
Tough but fair
Overall he was a fair teacher. IT was a hybrid course which was pretty cool since your in class half of the semester. but you really need to attend his classes because the movies he shows is a big part of the test. The tests were a lil tricky but if you study you will be fine!!
Most of my class didn't like him. It was hybrid, so we only met seven weeks. When we did meet the videos were interesting but that's it. Each week you have to write two 300 word essays to a question he gives you, then two 150 responses to what someone else said. Not at all what I hoped to get from the class, more like a history lesson.
I enjoyed racial and ethnic relations. I felt prof lewis really focused on the important issues and didn't shy away from the controversial issues. I went to his office hours and found him to be a very nice man. I would def recommend!
Professor Lewis is definitely one of my favorite professors. He does an excellent job at explaining concepts. His tests are fair and all the questions are based off of the lectures and some readings. I got an A in the course. But he's also one of the nicest guys. I know that I can talk to him if I have trouble understanding something.
Great professors (also taught by prof Furnari). Very easy as long as you do all the work. A lot of reading, but this class is cake.
Fun Class! Very different look at Sports.
Not an easy professor
Loved the class. Professor Lewis brought in a number of great guest speakers. Three easy exams and a cool paper. Recommend
on line class, a lot of reading and 3 exams that were actually in class. I was worried that it was going to be too much, but he is very clear about what he wants, didn't give any work on the weekends and he was a very fair grader. Do all the reading and you're ok.
You can definately get an A in his class as long as you attend class and take notes. He's a great professor, but a little bit cocky
Interesting hybrid class. Fair professor.
Three short essay exams, wide range of spors topics. Not as easy as you might think a sports class would be, but well worth the work. Professor clearly has a sports background.
This is my first online/hybrid course. The work is reasonable. I thought it would be nuts. This professor seems to have every minute planned. So far I'd really recommend racial and ethnic with lewis
Hybrid class taught with Dr. Furnari. Loved Furnari but only liked Lewis. Maybe because Furnari acted almost like a friend rather than a professor. Lewis expects a lot from students and it's a lot of material. But do the reading BEFORE class and you'll be set. Review the questions at the end of each chapter before the tests
had him mostly online, thank god cause i didn't enjoy lectures
Professor Lewis is one of the best teachers I have ever had throughout college. Very enthusiastic, LOVES what he does, and is extremely helpful. You would have to try in order to fail this class. Just give him the respect he deserves and he will go above and beyond for you. Don't second guess this class at all...just take it!
Oh my god...He is the best professor i have ever had. He really knows how to communicates with students..He gives us a confidence to talk. Just impressive that i could take this class..It was lucky
This professor came off as a bit arrogant. His assignments are completely overboard for a non-writing intensive course. Although I received a good grade in this class, I don't think the professor was lenient with the work load. You must read given assignments or you will be completely lost in this class. Be prepared to read and write alot.
Prof. Lewis came off as very strict - gruff, even - in the beginning, but he softened up as the semester went on. He was extremely thorough in his explanations of the material and genuinely wanted to instill in all his 101 students, regardless of reason for taking the course, a solid foundation in the principles of sociology. Recommend.
I took his course during the summer. He was great! He teaches online but you feel as if the material is more personal than virtual. Everyone can learn something about race and ethicity from his class.
I took his online class for Sociology of Sports. It is simple but you need to keep up with the material in order to do well. He himself isn't very helpful and I find that when you email him questions/comments/concerns he gives an attitude. Isn't that your job? He tends to be rude, thank god I didn't have to see him face to face.
By far the best class I've taken at Queens College. Very fair professor-very interesting course for anyone who loves sports.
Two 300 word weekly writings on the readings, with four 150 words on other posts. 4 tests- all very difficult with hardly anything to do with sociology, have the book with you when taking the test, as well as the modules. Not so helpful when you ask for help. And one 6 page paper due at the end of the semester, but you have all semester to do it.
Very disappointing. Online class re: raceðnic relations coupled wQC's diversity is golden opportunity to discuss racialðnic tensions of today (esp. as each student is "sight unseen"). Should be renamed "history of" class. Mandatory reading not too exciting; writing way too extreme. Did all work req'd but didn't learn much. A missed oppty!
Recommend!
Someone below wrote wasted opportunity and that is right. I am very interested in the topic but his assigned readings were dull and the workload was way too much. Also no slack with deadlines. When asked for help, he would give short unhelpful responses. This class has the potential to be much better. Would not take another class with Prof. Lewis.
There is no study guide for the tests nor any exact explanation of what will be on it. You'll have about 5 chapters for 1 test and about 40 questions that are randomly picked. The class was extremely easy minus the tests but the tests are the biggest portion of your grade so BEWARE!
The professor is very rude in his responses to emails and general communication to the class. I would never take another class with him again. The class was not enjoyable at all the way in the way it was laid out.
Fully online class, so I never met the guy. But his emails weren't really that great and didn't really ever answer the questions I asked. We had a schedule to follow since it was online, but he was slow to make changes when necessary and not clear when making videos for instruction. He taught with another professor, who I think was better.
10 modules, 3 tests and a 6 page paper, I think that the final should have only been on the documentary instead of being cumulative. overall easy grader, must read every word of the textbook to pass the tests, they are timed and you can not afford losing time by skimming through the pages. this class had the same amount of work as campus class.
Great online class! Reasonable workload and very caring professor!
I really enjoyed Soc 211. Professor Lewis set very clear expectations and was unbelievably accessible considering this was an online course. He answers emails in a few minutes! Great class!!!!
One of my favorite courses online. I plan to take more courses with this professor!
I really hope this professor is a better instructor in person. He'll grade the modules very leniently, and then he'll put weird and confusing trick questions on exams as if he wants his students to not do well on them. He builds this "tough guy" persona so you feel uncomfortable asking him just about anything. I would not advise anyone to take him.
Most organized and easy to follow online class that Ive taken at Queens College. Good textbook, easy assignments. Take this!
LOVED this online class. Reasonable workload....
After taking two other online classes before, my experiences were pretty bad. This class was different. The prof communicated with the class almost every day. He answered my emails right away. I recommend this professor.
Recommend. Very interesting.
I took Data212 with Professor Lewis online. It was two discussions per week and labs and 4 writing assignments. If you are organized this class is very easy and also Professor Lewis and Professor Funrnati Andre questions right away!
He has many rules on how he likes his assignments. You lose points for very minor things which will ruin your average. Not a professor youd want to take if you work or raise children. The course is very interesting but not one Id repeat with him. Does not like to work with students to help them flourish its simply transactional.
This has been a great class. You need to take it. Lewis is the best
He grades based on 4 exams. No homework or extra credit. The first lecture he comes off harsh and makes you uncomfortable asking questions He uses trick questions on the exams. Its based off a text book and everything he says in a lecture and no notes allowed. This was suppose to be an intro class and he expects us to have prior knowledge!
Pls Don't take this class from him
