An excellent prof. Makes math interesting!
This prof is making math scary
Hardest but greatest course and best prof EVER!
the best prof i've ever met, though the exams aren't easy
Best Math Prof I've ever encountered, but he made Math looks god dawn hard
illustrate the material in a clear manner
Awesome Prof. Makes math easy. If at all possible, take his sections.
Great Prof. Explain things in a fully clear way. Hard exams though

A really really good prof. He's funny too.
Just superb!! He is the most dedicated math prof I've ever seen.
Excellent prof, v dedicated and helpful @ of hr. BEWARE his tests and workload
No less than the ideal professor for an honours math course. Subjects students to a brutal workload, but is an extremely effective, capable, and knowledgeable teacher, and is friendly and funny to boot.
Best math prof ever, best prof at UBC. Really takes the time to get to know students and is so dedicated.
Very approachable, and funny too. Made us love math despite the heavy workload. His class notes are *really* good.
DON'T TAKE HIM! HARDEST math prof. in UBC
A very very good teacher! Sometimes the assignments are hard but they're really fun to do. (You gotta love those delta-epsilon proofs!) Very helpful when you have trouble with assignments.
more than half of the class failed. extremely hard exams and assignments.
hard midterm. hard prof.
I will be surprised if you don't fail.
Loewen is indeed one of the best math profs I've seen. Pushes you to think and learn your stuff. Exams are challenging but doable. The guy really cares about his students. Hats off to Dr. Loewen!

Incredible lecturer - fantastic notes. He is a challenging honours prof. If you can't keep up with him you have the wrong major.
Just wrote a midterm today. It was a really challenging exam. Many people will probably fail this midterm.

This is an excellent teacher. His attitude is great. thanks for all your help prof. loewen
TOUGH
midterms are too hard. But he is a good prof.
Best Math prof. in UBC
His exams and midterms are way too hard
Magnificent prof.Strongly recommended.Lots of good examples, easy lectures. BUT lots of homeworks! Exams are hard. If u're in math, take with him.
The best professor I have ever seen! He explains things very clearly in class, and has the greatest notes. If you have any questions after class, go to him, he is supper helpful. Highly recommend everybody to take his course, you will learn a great deal.
Eventhough he taught me a year ago, I'm still impressed by him. He's assignments and exams are quite carefully setup and you can actually learn through the exams.
Very smart and amazing memory.
Extremely difficult exams. Class average on exams are usually around 50%-60% range. But Loewen is a great honours prof. Even if you're doing poorly in his course, you'll still learn A LOT of stuff after it's all over (and hopefully you passed)
HARD HARD!
great prof teaches very clearly very helpful. I wish there was more prof like him in the department
This is the 2nd time I'm taking a class with him. And he is still super at what he's doing. His webnotes and homework solutions are the greatest. I like his occasional math jokes. Very helpful during office hours. Unfortunately, super hard exams.
Awesome prof, lots of help, very very good notes, very very difficult test, but you feel like you really know the material after you're done
Very difficult course, Helpful teacher!
great guy, great attitude, great explanation, great everything
Quite a bit of scaling at the end. Brilliant prof who challenges you every step of the way. Focus on learning the material and reading through his awesome notes. He's really generous in giving help outside of class.
Good teacher for hard course (math 300/317 combined). Gives alot of notes but not enough examples. Midterm and final were reasonable. but homework was somewhat useless for the complex analysis part.
The summer session avg is 59% - sounds hard? Not so, because if you actually study his notes and understand all those concepts, you could do well. He's very organized, responsible, and sometimes witty :)
A very intellegent man who can also teach very well. He's organised and helpful all the time. Although his tests are tough, you will do fine in his class only if you work hard.

Doesn't show enough examples in class. It makes hw a lot more difficult to do. Too much theory garbage in his notes. Needs to learn how to teach like Dr. Bui.
Nice~
Course is made sooo hard, but made sooo interesting and fun! Massive and fair scaling also made all the hard work worth it. Dr. Loewen is also nice in person, helpful in office hours, and a delight in class!
very hard course. But he is very friendly. Good sense of humor. Very good communication. He supports his students very well.
SUPER NICE GUY. Eversince the first time i went to his office hours i was deeply impressed by his friendliness. A great teacher, except he doesn't writes too much on the blackboard that starts to become a little distracting. Very highly recommended
He is really good but the homework promblems in the class where to hard and made learning difficult.
Best proff I ever had;let me tell you sth in every course in which there is Loewen and Feldman working together you have to study HARD!!! no I mean really hardZZZ!! Hardest tests ever.Chears
Excellent Prof. I would recommend him to anyone. He really cares about his students and is willing to help you where ever you need it. His tests are a little hard, but going to all of his classes before really helps. He might not give too many examples, but he chooses them well and goes through them thoroughly. Makes this class enjoyable!
I am having a lot of difficulty in this course.. this guy writes too fast and too much.. makes going to class quite distracting because you spend most of the time catching up to his writing speed. HW is hard... tests are harder.. makes going to class very fustrating
Too much theories, too little (useless) examples. HW's on the difficult side. Probably the hardest class you will have to take (in and before 2nd year)
I would NOT recommend this prof. It was the first time he taught this course in 20 years. That could very well explain why the course was so POORLY taught - the final exam was BRUTAL, the textbook was bogus, not enough practice problems, and the list goes on. Homework problems were too hard and made learning difficult!
An excellent professor, no doubt. Made life hell though. I don't remember working so hard for a course in my life, and I usually work hard for all my courses. If you want to learn math and don't care about your gpa take his course. I took his course in summer though, that made it harder I guess. Average was 58%, after scaling. I was glad to get 72%
Focuses less on content more on abstract concepts. Seems funny and nice but really isnt.
Ignore the negative comments. Yes he did concentrate on the abstract, but gave numerous examples. And the abstract is where where the fun is in Math; if he doesn't teach the abstract MATH in a math class...then what's the point? The exams were challenging(approachable questions; crunched for time). However, it was fun to listen to his lectures!
Absolutely AMAZING teaching. The guy is a teaching machine. All his classes are actually entertaining. Very clear, puts hard questions on tests, but always tests for understanding. Gives LOTS of notes in class but they are very helpful and so are his examples. Put time and effort and you'll ace his course. Again, hands down, best math teacher ever.
He is definitely an AWESOME prof. He cares about the students who are quite behind as well. His HWs are quite challenging, but the midterms are reasonable =) His lectures are not boring at ALL. He gives many examples. Overall, one of the best prof
One of the best math profs I've had at UBC, would definitely recommend this class!! His midterms can be tricky at times and he tends to not allow too write fairly long tests. Be prepared to study hard and you'll be rewarded!
Great person, terrible instructor. He only knows the BAkery example and has to check the notes every minute or has to stop, not boring because goes at 100 mph, does not care about being clear just about being fast no matter what. If you can can please avoid. OR HIDE HIS NOTES FOR CLASS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.
Always in a rush, does not answer questions, does not give office hours and when finally does try to convince you to avoid going.Simply frustating to have an instructor like him. No examples provided, only the ones known by heart.
Whenever the wind whistles through the leaves, I'll think "Loewenstein"... ..."Loewenstein"
Great prof. Doesn't just teach out of the textbook and gives other approaches to solving problems. His homework problems are insanely challenging, expect to spend a lot of time on them. Midterms are more reasonable though and the class tends to get easier as it progresses.
Rushing through the material, late to classes, not many examples, exams are very tough, make you really work your grade. Pretend to understand your issues but does not really help. Expect you to know everything and does not help much. Hard on students. I would NOT recommend to take his course unless you really have to. A REAL PIECE OF WORK!
Too fast, uses same examples, explanation is not always clear, does not care much what students think, marks are way too low, assignments are very hard, not recommended....too overrated!
He is the worst out of all my profs in the past. He speaks too fast in class, gives unclear examples and is tough on students. I would recommend to avoid by all means unless you have to take his course. Save your time and nerves.
No office hours, no real help. Few examples provided, vague explanations. Follow the notes most of the time. Always in the rush. Not to helpful. Students be aware!
Simply avoid
disappointing class. unnecessarily tough from beginning to end. exams and homework aren't straight forward and therefore don't reflect if you know the course material or not. STEER CLEAR!
Not for the faint hearted. Really pushed you to think and he put in lots of efforts to know his students. A few weeks in he knows everyone by name. Lots of office hours and always helpful.
to be honest, his lectures were average math class, be there, and take notes. BUT his final was unbelievablly hard and long!! nobody in my class finished it! it was just ridiculous!!run fast, run far from his class, especially summer sections. you will have self-esteem issues after his exams, trust me,i regreted already.
Oh man where do I even start. Average lectures. Nothing phenomenal. HOWEVER: HIS EXAMS ARE KILLER! If you thought your life was tough enough as is, you clearly haven't taken Loewen's classes. Take something else with another professor is all I can say. I still have nightmares about how horrible it was (and I got a decent mark).
Super clear notes & stuff. Boring lecture. If you are math major hes pretty good. For non-math major, avoid. BTW, easy on marking (exam), but super loooooooooong homework takes 4ever to finish.
His tests are absurd. Basically impossible to understand what they hell he is asking. You can go into a test knowing the content and still fail hard due to the fact that you couldn't answer the indecipherable cryptic questions.
This is the hardest teacher I have ever had. He makes the material much harder than it needs to be. Others i have spoken to, who have taken this course with a different prof, have found the course to be trivial. Our course consisting of the brightest minds was %30. I relied on Paul's notes, khan academy, and chegg to get by,
I should have skipped every class and taught myself the course. This guy's useless.
An anomaly: a quick, clever thinker, enthusiastic and engaged, whom I cannot at all recommend. Explanations were absurdly complex, with no reference points or labels. He managed to confuse me about material I’d already learned and practiced on my own! My math friends explained the same material in a fraction of the time, and far more clearly.
So incredibly helpful and understanding of students, and non-judgemental, although the course is very tough. Taught myself out of textbook mostly but his in class notes are more thorough. Go to his office hours!! Difficult but reasonable exams.
Unreasonable evaluations all around. Assignments focus on abstract stuff, useless to prepare you for exams. Very little examples done in class - useless derivations and proofs only. Had to teach myself. No effort to make the course relevant to engineering, and the majority of the class happens to be in engineering. Take it with Pierce if you can.
Hardest exams in the first three years of civil engineering for sure. They are not relevant to the course material whatsoever. Pierce is far better from what I have heard. I don't ever do these things but he was that bad.
Exams are extremely difficult; the questions showing up can be unpredictable. However, he is very helpful in and outside of class and genuinely a really nice guy. He's funny, speaks clearly and has enthusiasm for what he teaches. Loewen didn't really use a textbook which would have made it easier for me personally to follow along in class.
A really nice guy and really clear in lecture, but an ineffective professor. The experience overall left a bad taste - exams were much more difficult in comparison to what was actually taught and the requirements on the syllabus.
Dr. Loewen is really nice, and genuinely wants to help students learn. However, he tends to over complicate things and a simple subject can be explained in such a way that confuses even Einstein.
I'm not sure what all the complaints on difficulty are about, or where they came from, but my experience with dr. Loewen has been positive all-round. He is an excellent teacher, giving a well balanced mix of theory and example, and his tests are absolutely fair and manageable, not to mention he marks very fairly. Take him if you want to learn math.
Took his class during the summer and as a professor he is great. The content could be difficult if your not keeping up but overall the final exam and previous exams felt straight forward and definitely do able.
A great prof
He is a good person, always there to help. But he tries to make the scienceengineering course concepts look like a novel to read. It will be good if his teaching and notes are not wordy.
Amazing professor and also one of the hardest (if not the hardest) courses I've ever taken. His energy during lectures is great, and he makes the content very interesting. Even then, the midterms are very challenging so study off anywhere you can. The exam questions are unique and really test your understanding.
Amazing professor, who inspires conceptual understanding and learning rather than hard work. study smart
Very good and respectable prof, also a piazza god
Legitimately the worst professor I've ever had. He over-explains the material of math 316 to the point where the dead-simple material we are covering becomes confusing and difficult, I don't think his ego can take knowing how simple and unimportant his class should be. Does not allow formula sheets on the final for some reason. Avoid at all costs.
Prof Loewen was a great prof. His lectures were always full of people because everyone in other sections would just come to his. He explains things well and he really likes to tell stories so lectures are always very entertaining. I just wish he would get through all of the practice problems he plans to -- webworks are hard and time-consuming
Made going to class so enjoyable. I usually looked forward to going to his lectures cause you know at some point in the 50 minutes he'll make you laugh or at least smile with a good joke or story. Went pretty heavy on conceptual learning and spent less time doing examples which made putting the theory into practice for webwork problems.
I started going to Lowen's section in the middle of the term, and it was definitely the right decision. Lowen's teaching style is very laid back and relaxed and he really makes you think about the course content. I will warn that he does get carried away every now and then but despite this he is still a fantastic professor!
Prof Loewen is such a great teacher! He transitioned from online to in-person classes in the winter term so well. His classes are really content-heavy but he is chill and accessible during and outside of office hours. The webworks are really hard and tough though.
His fine, but RARELY He gave EXPLICIT Examples, that would come to the exam & hwk, get ready to study using textbooks
He is super nice. His teaching style is very note-based. He writes many sentences to explain things in detail. I attended every single class and took notes, but his teaching style did not match mine. I learn through examples and formulas. The way he wrote lots of sentences did not help me :( Sadly, I am about to fail this course.
Philip gives funny dad energy and his lectures are so entertaining. He's VERY active on Piazza with great answers. His cheatsheets are so good and he does optional lectures! He always answers questions on zoom so go to lectures guys. The only downside is that sometimes he uses complicated analogies that are a bit hard to understand.
He's ok but his lectures start going on tangents and get way too theory focused sometimes. If you're taking math 101, the lecturer really doesn't matter. Just look at the learning objectives, watch a 5-10 minute youtube video, do the webwork and see if you can do them. If not, ask on Piazza. If you can, boom, you saved yourself 2 hours.
Incredible professor! Would undoubtedly take a course with him again.
Dr. Loewen cared about his students' wellbeing even outside of the class. He was non-judgmental, always available for questions, and a great teacher. His lectures were engaging. One comment is that the homework grading feedback was not always accurate, and too lenient considering his tough test grading.
Professor Loewen is always ready to help, if you can book an office hour with him he would be happy to discuss any topics, not necessarily restricted to the course material or mathematics. His exams were fare, and homeworks were challenging. He probably scaled up the grades by 10% at the end. Advice is: review calculus 2 and ode in the summer.
Negatives: abstract lectures sometimes not clear how to apply knowledge not enough examples given in lectures (math department's fault for 2hrs a week) 2023W final exam includes questions as difficult as the hardest ones shown in lectures Positives: theoretical lectures interesting to listen to makes you feel smart for understanding him
He really cares about his students and teaches with passion.
Professor Loewen is an engaging lecturer who injects humor into his classes. While his focus on theory can make applying concepts challenging, using resources like Unstuckstudy alongside the lectures helped me grasp the material. Overall, an enjoyable and rewarding class.
Professor Loewen shows a genuine passion for the material. Lectures were engaging and run in a way that encouraged me to attend class even with optional attendance. Tests are fair and based clearly on the content that is covered in class, which is directly supplemented by weekly homework problems throughout the course.
Professor Loewen demonstrates genuine passion for the material he teaches. His lectures are very impressive and his instructions are clear. He is highly approachable after class and responds in a timely manner on Piazza. I would definitely take another class with him.
There is no resource you can find online, you must go to the lecture so that you could take the note on blackboard. it is really oldschool but to hard to follow and get the vital topic which is examined...
the final is really tricky which makes me feel my review work is all for nothing for some questions need you to broad you brain during the tight exam and do the complex calculation after that...
