I HATE algebra and this class didn't help. I tried as hard as I could and got a "D". I did take MAT 0024 with him and passed, so I retook him but did not have the same results.
Beginning algebra. Did not really like this teacher. He was a little too into talking to people who knew more about algebra or liked it more than I did. This was only a requirement. Do not take during the summer unless you are an all "A" stu
He is a great teacher, one of my favorites ever. I have had him for 3 different classes and I have learned so much from him. ANd he will help you UNTIL you understand, hehe i know. His test are harder then everyone else s but you learn more.

I hate math, all forms of math. But Mr. Lyons makes this very easy to understand. I have been able to retain what he has taught without having to do the homework. He teaches very well and one of my hardest courses has become one of my more enjoyable ones.
Dr.Lyons is a great teacher. I hated math until I started taking his class.
he is awesome. I would take him again if I could. he knows so much but can still teach it. I dont really like math and stats and calc are very confusing. However, he explains in a way that you can understand. very understanding and helpful.
Lyons is an allright guy. I probably learned more about math in his class than I ever did anywhere else. Just never could seem to do better than a C in his classes though. No matter how hard I tried.
He's a great guy, but I didn't care for his teaching style. Everyone told me he was a wonderful teacher but I just didn't think he was that great. I ended up taking a "W" in the course. He seemed to favor the students that liked math a lot.
Professor Lyons is very helpful and he shows you more than one ways to get the answer to the problem.
Great teacher! He is so easy to get along with, and extremely helpful when you just do not understand something. I have had him for two of my classes. I still have two more to go and will only take them with him!
lyons is my boy
AWESOME........... I love his teaching style. Very compassionate and understanding. I was a slacker but I saw my potential when I took his class. Lyons is the best.
I had this teacher for beginning and intermediate algebra, and he is awesome! His exams are very basic, and he is willing to help you until you understand. I plan on taking him for all my math courses at st.johns, and i recommend that you do too!
great teacher, i don't care much for math, but i made an "A", but you must put the study time in.
After failing this class the first time with some dumb lady I was told Mr. Lyons was one of the best teachers so I took his class this semester and passed w/ a B and passed the exit exam. I already signed up for the next math class w/ him. Explains work very well.
Mr Lyons can be very rude to his students. He is very boring. However his class is a breeze, if you complete the study guides you will pass the tests.
Lyons is a very nice guy. I would have received a better grade if I had actually studied the material before taking the test. I did pass the class but definately not with the grade a could have gotten if I had applied myself. Take him, you learn and the tests are basic material.
Great Teacher, I will take him for college algebra and On
He is awesome!!!! I recommend him to everyone.
vERY GOOD MATH TEACHER
Only grades on test scores. Does not drop any grades. Will do well if you study and he will let you know exactly what will be on the test normally.
Great professor. Always offers help if you need it. Humorous in the classroom and will stop the lesson to help you understand it. It's easy if you keep up with the studying and make sure you understand the homework. last minute studying does NOT help. if you don't get it from day 1 then ask for help because he'll move on and youll be stuck.
This man is great. Grew up in the Bronx and is as patient as a saint. Down to earth.. not about extra work.. shows you short cuts.. I plan to take him for College Algebra.
Finally a professor that didn't stree me. He has a soothing tone. Unlike any other professor that I've had he did argue that some of the material was hard. Not a hard nose. Soo greatful! I'm terrible at math and his humor got me through. He made it seem easy. Showed short tricks. And he didn't get caught up in things that we didn't need to know.
Love this Professor! Hated that I couldn't take him for Pre-calc. Very patient and makes math FUN! If you can take him for all math classes, DO IT! If you get an "A" on all the first tests, you can opt to skip the final. GREAT GUY all around!
Lyons was my first teacher and he made learning fun! He doesn't make you feel dumb when you ask a question and he makes math seem really easy. You do have to study in order to make a good grade, but isn't that how it is with every class? I took him for Inter. Algebra and College Algebra.
Best math professor @ SJRCC OP campus, has test reviews before the test date and after, explains information thoroughly so that everyone understands, & displays a genuine desire of success from all his students. Overall grade based on 5 test. no homework & no cumulative midterm or final.
I've taken Mr. Lyons for prealgebra and college algebra and soon for precalc. He's a great teacher! Actually remembers what its like to be a student. Super nice. Tries to teach a few different methods for each problem. Study and do the home work and you should pass no problem.
This teacher is really nice and friendly. He never gets mad even if you fail every test. Just pay attention in class and take notes and you'll be fine.
I do not like math at all... but because of Mr. Lyons... it's not so bad. He does have the patience of a saint, very easy going, laughs throughout the class, teaches in a way that is understandable, what can I say... the guy is awesome.
The Best.
Highly recommend. Great teacher. Very helpful, great sense of humor. The day before the test gives a review which is extremely helpful. I used review for my study guide. Gives partial credit on test if you have wrong answer but right formula. No grades are dropped and only one make-up test allowed, but still highly recommend this teacher.
Professor Lyons is good humored and almost too-nice. Do the homework and go to the reviews and it's an easy A.
Strongly recommend! He will help explain every step in detail & if you have any questions he will help.
Thank goodness for Mr. Lyons. He actually speaks with the students and everyone can relate to him on a personal level which makes math much more enjoyable! Reinterates and explains anything you ask. HW offered as help but not graded. Amazing teacher.
Excellent teacher.... explains everything in detail
Mr. Lyons is a really good teacher. I had him in the spring of 2010 and got good grades in his class. He even gave me good comments on how I improved a lot since Int. Algebra. I had a tutor to work with when I took the class, but didn't need it since I've taken better notes from Mr. Lyons class. I suggest you all take him!
Absolutely BRILLIANT teacher, explains until you understand, teaches different approaches and let you choose your own, gives partial credit on problems if you have shown how you worked it out. Really hope I am lucky enough to have him for all math related classes.
I had Mr.Lyons from College Algebra all the way through Calculus III. He is the best teacher I have ever had. He is patient and knows so much about math that even if you dont understand he has 10 other ways to explain. I would recommend him to anyone. Go to class and take notes and you will pass. Homework is helpful too
MR. LYONS IS LIKE THE BEST TEACHER EVER.. I WISH I COULD TAKE HIM FOR STATISTICS
Awesome Professor, always willing to help you understand the processes of Algebra.
Had him for Calc I and taking him again for Calc II. Excellent teacher, very patient with questions and extra help. Does everything he can to make sure you pass, and he's forgiving about absences in class.
Crystal clear teaching, the consummate professional. If you put in the study time he will guide you to an "A". I wish all of the instructors at St. John's had his love and enthusiasm of the course subject. It was a pleasure to sit in his class.
I took this professor for two previous math classes but had to take him for precalculus. I He requires a graphing calculator for the class but will NOT allow you to use it for the trig portion. It makes no sense because the textbook he requires only has problems which the calculator is needed. He isn't prepared with proper examples for each clas
Easiest math teacher ever! He made algebra beyond easy! Easy A !
If you attend his class his notes are so easy to understand and explain EVERYTHING! I studied the notes alone and passed all my tests!
Cant say enough about this teacher. If you are someone who has trouble understanding math, or it just sounds like another language completely, take this professor. He is great! Teaches things in a way so you understand it clearly. Drops lowest test grade too! Makes math easier to understand, and that on its own deserves an award. Best math teacher.
I wish I had taken his class my first semester. He goes over whatever you didn't understand for the homework and plenty of examples in his lectures. Can't wait to take him next semester!
Great pfrof for everything. Took him from Colllege Alg to Dif Eq wish I take him with me to the university
Took this teacher for algebra and pre-calculus and would take him again for my other calculus classes. Only have good things to say. Hes always willing to help, hes always in a good mood, and hes always patient. I got a C but its only because I didnt do the homework assigned. It was my fault! I definitely recommend him. Hes a great teacher!
Great teacher!
Professor Lyons has the deepest knowlegde of mathematics I've ever seen. He makes things very easy to understand and grades based on conceptual errors versus trivial errors. Tests are alsmost exactly as the review.
Fantastic teacher! If you're confused, he'll go over anything. He uses the online program web assign, which isn't that hard, but its annoying. Great teacher overall, and every helpful and knowledgeable in his courses.
Great teacher! Great sense of Humor! Very good at explaining what you don't understand.
LOVE HIM...VERY ENCOURAGING AND HELPFUL..HE WANTS ME TO TAKE PRE CALCULUS...NOT!!!
I recommend goin 2 every class 4 notes. Do hmwk and study a lil bit 4 tests & u have an A. He gives a study review/guide the day b4 the test and the test is identical. He does not use the same book as the school requires, so the book isnt worth the money. ALL YOU NEED IS THE MATHXL.
Lyons was a terrible teacher who made me hate math, and was not helpful at all! his test are worth 90% of your grade which puts an unreasonable amount of pressure on test. and I do not recommend taking his class.
I have never succeed in Math. Mr. Lyons helped me understand it in a very simple way so I could get through his class.
Wonderful teacher. Very funny, great personality. highly recommend him for college algebra
Professor Lyons is the best math teacher I have ever had! He is able to break down math into basic terms that most people can understand. He was always available for questions. His expectations were very reasonable for a class at this level. Do the work, attend class, take notes.
You don't need the textbook do not buy it. Take the notes he writes on the board and there is the test. Wonderful teacher! The tests are exactly what he teaches.
super great teacher, he knows his stuff. class is easy just copy the notes and do the mathxl homework.
Professor Lyons is the absolute best Math teacher EVER! I was HORRIBLE at Math until I took his college algebra class, where I made my first 97 on a test, EVER, and finished with a solid 'B'. Use the pen casts, they are amazing, and the homework can be done at your own pace on Math XL. Enroll early, his classes fill fast!!
I love this man. I went into his class freaking out that I wasn't going to understand the material, and in the beginning I didn't. But I tried really hard, did all of the suggested exercises, and most of all I went and talked to him. I went to his office 3 times in one day and he never seemed the least bit mad. He is the reason I passed!
Fun to learn from, but sometimes he goes a little too fast in the lecture. But if you ask him to go back over it he will. Tries to make you understand the material.
I wish I had him for the previous Algebra class, I would've made an A. He's super helpful, patient, kind, and funny. You have to put in the work to pass the tests because the homework counts 3 points off your test if you don't complete it. Only tests are graded; not homework.
Veckzo is engaging and lively, but wouldn't recommend if you're bad with math as his tests are challenging. Hohrath is my favorite, gives a lot of homework but you come to appreciate his teaching style & he's understanding. Lyons is passionate w/ math & a good balanced option but he can be not-so forgiving, TESTS ONLY are credited to your grade
College Algebra was insanely hard. I managed to pull out a C which is my lowest grade but it was on my incompetence in the course material. Mr. Lyons is an awesome professor and will literally stop in the middle of equation and go back over it until you have it nailed. Very kind and genuinely cares. Functions and logarithms are the hardest part.
Great teacher. Take his classes if you suck at math. Homework is online but he only takes points off if you get below a 90. Its only a few points and they are taken off the tests. Standard attendance sheet passed around. Gives partial credit for wrong answers if you're going the right direction. DONT BUY THE BOOK, THE ONLINE SOFTWARE HAS EVERYTHING
Professor Lyons is a caring, knowledgeable, and understanding teacher. His lectures are entertaining and informative. Partial credit is given. Must accomplish 90% of homework or points are lost on tests. Tests are the only grading criteria for the class with the final weighting 25% of the grade. I would recommend him for PreCal.
Professor Lyons was a great professor but this was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. There were only 4 grades in this class which were all tests, so it made things extremely stressful. However, he does give partial credit on test questions which was a HUGE help. Hard class but a great professor, definitely learned a lot.
I took him for precalculus I am in calculus 3 now for UNF. Best teacher I have ever had! Better than any of these, University teachers. Super clear way of teaching leaves no doubt in your mind, no pretentiousness from academia, absolutely brilliant and wise teacher. If you fail his class it's not because you are not a math person fyi.
He is an amazing teacher, willing to help you in and outside of class. Only criticism is that he expects you to have remembered all of your math from before so if you forget, just ask and he'll reteach what you forgot or go to him during office hours. Do the homework, take notes, and you'll pass.
Professor Lyons is an informative professor overall. He can go too far and make the lesson more complicated than it should be, though. He presents the lessons on the board and talks about how easy it all is. It's a shame that I have to look back at my previous math professor's notes in order to get the main idea across.
The class is going to be a little difficult but he is overall a strong teacher and the online homework will really help you. I'm pretty good at math all together and came out with an 89.
Lyons is a great educator however, there is a difference between "educator" and "teacher". He teaches the material while skipping steps and makes it harder than it actually is. He also expects you to already know everything about calculus prior to class. I would NOT recommend him for anyone who struggles with math. Hard and cocky teacher.
I would not recommend this professor upon my sworn enemy. I have not received lower than a B since primary school until now. He expects you to understand the logic of the math he's teaching and thinks you know everything he does. He skips steps during examples because he does them in his head thinking you know what to do. Please do not take him.
Save yourself from taking him. He does all the hard steps in his head and declares that everything is "easy". He does not care about his students passing, given that only tests are what makes up your entire grade. Tests are based on his VERY detailed lecture, which he expects you to remember everything he writes down. Do not take him.
This is the hardest math class I've ever taken. However, it isn't hard because of the concepts but because there is so much to remember. If you work hard and do ALL the homework and ask whenever you need it, then you should do well and pass. I recommend coming to every class. Only 4 grades which are exams and then the final.
Absolute best teacher I've ever had, inspires you beyond the course material, helps you become an analytical thinker, always open to break down solutions and show you where you could make improvements. Took him for precalc, calc I , calc II
Save your time and money and do not take this. I've always been good at math and barely passes his class. He often over explains the easy concepts and under explains the hard ones. I honestly could have skipped every class period, watched the reviews he puts on blackboard and done better.
Not very difficult concepts but you need to understand them along with understanding on how to do the problems if you want to do well on the tests and get an A or a B. Graded only by tests. Attendance is not mandatory IF you are doing well in the class but it is highly recommended to attend every class. Amazing professor. Way easier than Calc 2.
Very nice man, always willing to help you understand the concepts. Homework optional but strongly recommended. Daily quizzes based on hw for extra point towards test. They're easy if you do all the HW. Tests are tough, always at least one curveball question. Very fair at handing out partial credit. Final exam is HARD, so build your grade up early!
Terrific professor. Had him from Calc1 all the way to here, differential equations. Knows the content inside and out. Your grade is only tests and there are only 3, including the final. Only flaw is that he skips steps a lot so make sure to ask what he just did. Always available during office hours. The content was easy until Laplace transforms.
Best teacher I have ever had. Math is the most difficult subject for me and he really breaks everything down and really helps you clearly understand the material. Highly recommend.
Very hard to follow on lectures. He skips steps on math problems expecting you to already know what he was thinking.
He is so descriptive you cant really follow along to what he is doing. I look down to take my notes for a second, then I look up and there is an entire board of stuff that I dont know. He only grades his tests which are stupid because I have test anxiety.
He is a wonderful person. I would show up to class every day just because he uses examples that might be in the final but with different numbers. He is very nice. However, all of his grades are tests. If you get a 70-90 percent on the homework he takes 1 point away from your test and if you get greater than a 90 then you get no points taken away.
Good professor. The grade is based solely on five tests and a final. His handwriting is difficult to read, so if you didn't write it down when he said it you won't get it off the board. He grades very quickly, tests are always returned to the next class period no matter what. Homework is almost useless, worst case scenario you lose 3 points.
Professor Lyons is a great Professor. His lectures are intriguing though there is a lot to cover. He also tends to crack a few jokes to brighten up the lectures. The course can be very challenging itself but as long as you attend class and study it will be fine. Tests and homework with one quiz is what you should look forward to in his class.
As someone who has struggled in math since a child, Mr. Lyons was an amazing math professor. I was terrified of being in college algebra, but he gave you all the resources to succeed. He does challenge you and it is difficult, but that is just algebra. Grade depends on the 4 tests, but he provides recorded lectures to review before.
I have never been good at math, but I got a 95 on a test and got an a in the class. While he does not take it easy on you, you makes the material very clear, he tells you what is on the test, and he will answer questions during class without making you feel dumb. If he says its on the test, it 100% will be on the test. He will tell you!! Amazing.
Professor Lyons gives excellent lectures and goes through every detail of the problem. He is very well respected in our class and grades tests fairly with clear criteria. Professor Lyons also dedicates a review day before a test which really helps with what I should be studying before the test and of course what's on the test. ]
Grade is 100% tests but if you don't do the homework you will struggle. He has bonus quizzes for extra credit and he gives awesome partial credit for exams. No trick questions— he tells you exactly what will be on the test. He's very from the textbook and goes fast, but his tests are a lot easier than what he teaches in class. He's funny too
Prof. Lyons was one of the best math professors I have ever had. He truly cares about his classes and has detailed lectures. He will explain a concept and then do practice problems from the textbook for the class to work through. He goes through each question and is happy to explain areas of confusion. Tests are like in-class practice, so show up.
I had Prof. Lyons for Calc 1 and 2, and he has been great. His Calculus 2 class is definitely a challenge, but that is because of the material. He tries his best to make lectures understandable and gives extra credit quizzes that definitely help. There are only four tests and a final, so make sure to study and do the practice from the textbook.
