This teacher is great. I now often think back to his lectures and the great time I had in his class. He knows the material he teaches, and he is generous with his grading. He even gives you all the terms for the final!

Great to take over the summer. You'll learn a lot! Quizzes are in groups - SO EASY! Easy final with study guide. Essays get a bit tougher as you go along, but he gives you a guide on what he expects. Reminds me of Richard Dreyfuss in Mr. Holland's Opus - in a good way though, looks and all. LOL!

greatest english teach i have ever had. i sucked at writing essays but now write ten page essays no problem cuz of this guy. he goes over every topic, from cocaine in coca-cola to ****s. hes a extreme outdoor sports guy and almost always dies but hes the coolest teacher ever. /grades hard on the esssays but it helps in the long run!

He is funny and a really good teacher. He goes over everything before writing our essays. Does quizzes with groups sometimes. Grades hard on essays but a great teacher.

Can be very left sided, which is ok, until he makes another Bush comment. Other than that, hes funny and does explain in very good detail how to wtire a good paper. Has a very good packet that shows good and bad essays to compare to. His quizes are easy and in groups (mostly). Good teacher for a boring subject.

Mayfield is a cool guy who likes to talk about stupid animals and his hiking trips which makes him kind of a fun teacher. If you don't like his stories like I did you can at least make fun of him afterwords. I learned a lot in his class and there isn't a lot of hw. quizes are in groups too!

Mayfield knows what he's talking about. He's very intelligent and is clear about what he expects from his students. He teaches writing on a very step-by-step basis. It seems like, if you don't write an essay exactly how he would write it, it's not an A. Very few people in the class get As on his essays. He's hard. Take him if you want a challenge.

ITS alot of writing, but he gives you time. He doesnt really read your paper. hes unorganized and lazy. He is way to cynical and even if you have great evidence and your argument is sound and valid. If he doesnt agree with you there goes your grade! i cant stand him!

Great teacher. Tells alot of funny and interesting stories. Lets you turn in late papers without affecting your grade, and lets you rewrite papers for a better grade (if you turn it in on time). Wants alot of support for anything you claim. He taught me alot about writing.

I loved this guy, he's so cynical and hilarious. I don't really know what I learned in the class. I zoned out frequently, did papers the night before they were due, studied for his final literally 20 minutes before he had it. Aced them all. Easy professor, easy class, easy A. Take him!

He is the guy to take for critical thinking. He makes sure that you understand everything and he keeps you very interested by telling you some off the wall stories. You learn alot and have fun at the same time. Take him!!

I took his summer 103 class. I didn't mind too much because he was interesting. He just seemed a bit jaded and cynical, maybe it's just because it's a sumer class? I would definitely recommend him. He's a character.

He seems really intimidating at first, but he's actually very sarcastic and funny. He gives realistic examples that make the class interesting. not alot of h.w. at all, he keeps things really simple and straightforward.

Tough class. Grades essays hard. You need to show up everyday because we have group quizzes that have points anywhere from 5-10. It adds up quickly. As for a teacher, he's a cool guy I guess I was just expecting more out of what everybody was saying on here. Overall my exp. in the class has been average.

Challenging class, but I definitely left each class feeling like I learned something important. Cool guy too. Lots of group work, so you end up with friends in the class.

He is a very tough grader but very helpful. He responds to e-mails within a day. He tells you what to study before a test/essay and leaves it up to you to do the work. If you like working hard, take this class. He's got a great sense of humor, very sarcastic. He LOVES No Country for Old Men & talks about it a lot. I enjoyed the class immensely.

Not for those who just want to pass or are lazy. This professor really makes you think critically. Even if you go in with the intentions of not learning, you will learn something. He grades a little hard with quizzes, and essays but just remember to consider both sides of the arguments in the essays and READ THE BOOK! He's a comical guy too.

He challenges you to think about topics in a more in depth way than you normally might. Not an easy A but definitely worth the time because you learn something every class. His humor keeps it entertaining. Lots of group work which counts as daily quizzes. Very interactive class as opposed to just listening to a lecture for an hour.

Took eng100 and eng103 with Mayfield. Absolutely one of the best english teachers on the Fullerton campus. He is not easy but, you learn a lot in his class. Keeps the class interesting and uses his sarcasm as entertainment. Grades essays hard but the everyday easy quizes and classwork helps your grade out a lot. HIGHLY SUGGEST TAKING HIM!

Prof Mayfield is so far one of the most enjoyable teacher's I've had so far. I enjoyed his class for ~π reasons. 1.His class is very entertaining (lots of jokes and group work that keep you awake) 2. He is fair in his grading. 3. I've learned to write better essays.

Funny, entertaining, and love the way he gets his point across to the class. I feel like he's reading an essay each time he lectures. He uses a lot of random things to explain one simple point but its way easier to grasp the concept of what he's trying to say. I feel like I've learned more about writing essays in this class than in any other class.

Absolutely amazing professor. He grades very hard and the class is not easy, but you learn a lot from him. His critical thinking class teaches you to think outside the box and apply it to your everyday life. Not a lot of homework, little text book use, group work every day, gives extra credit toward the end of semester, attendance is mandatory.

The best English teacher in the world. I had such a good time in his class. I thought I was an excellent writer when I started ENGL100. I learned that I had so much to learn. You'll have to work cause Phil doesn't give out A's. If you have questions he's more than willing to help you understand. The writing center helps if you need more guidance.

Professor Mayfield is one of the best professors I've ever had. English has not been my favorite subject in the past but Professor Mayfield made the subject really easy to understand. I recommend himm for ANY student who can take him.

He's an excellent professor. Take him, you will not regret. Class is mandatory but doesn't matter because you'll never want to miss this class anyway. its fun. Class is not an easy A, but again, doesn't matter because you will learn and grow as a writer and thinker. Oh best part, he gives 1 week extension on essay due dates with zero penalization.

Professor Mayfield is a tough grader, but because of that, you will become a much better writer. There are 4 essays and quizzes every day. If you remember to take notes, you should be good for the final. I highly recommend this professor for people who are willing to put some effort. Mayfield is an all around great professor!

Professor Mayfield has by far been my favorite english teacher. I hated english, but he is really funny and I definitely am learning a lot. He keeps it going, yes, there are daily quizzes and 4 essays. BUT the quizzes you do in groups and the essays he is consistently preparing you for!

Professor Mayfield is by far the best professor I've ever had. He clarifies how to write. Which then actually helps you communicate better verbally. A very entertaining and caring educator. There is a lot of writing, 6 essays (2 in class) which he prepares you for nicely along the way. Great experience, take his classes!!!!!

He's a pretty good professor with some interesting ideas. He grades pretty hard on papers, but if you turn them in on time, he'll give you some helpful comments-which you can learn from. He accepts papers a week after they are due, but offers few comments. Daily quizzes, which are usually group.

I took his classes english 100 and 103 and i did whatever i could to get it because he basically knows how to make you into a better person intellectually. I will be taking more courses from him

Write long and thorough paragraphs. As long as you do that he will give you good grades on your essays. He is very specific with what he wants, so do what he wants. Easy as that.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate Professor Mayfield. He is extremely well-rounded, relatable, and comedic. I took his summer ENG 100 and was so encouraged by him throughout. I would recommend him to anyone. Truly an inspiring educator.

One of the, if not THE best professor I've had at Fullerton College. The guy is funny, smart, entertaining, etc. It's fun to be in his class. I loved it. As a professor, he's really flexible. There are few "correct" answers in his class. What's key is to make he best case possible for your arguments. Put thought into your papers and you'll ace them

I took this professor in 2010, and am getting to doing rate my professors. This guy is by far one of the best teachers I've had from K - 12 and beyond. I got a chance to do a interview with him for another class as well. You'll learn a lot from him. I enjoyed talking politics in his class. Took him for 101 and 103.

He's a model professor. He's very helpful, clear, and funny. When you need help, just ask away, and he'll answer your question. As long as you pay attention in class, you are guaranteed to pass.

I got an A in the class, but I had to work for it. At first was very intimidating. But he's the type of professor that'll actually teach you something. There's four papers, but you're more than prepared. He has you turn in outlines and really provides feedback. He's quick to return papers. Quiz every day and class work, so you have to go to class.

I am being very brutally honest with you, this guy is freaking awesome. I am not a teacher's pet or anything like that. He give extra credit (a LOT of it) and is freaking hilarious. You can't miss more then 2 classes and there is a lot of in class work (especially with other people) but its cool. Its EASY POINTS! I'm taking him for my ENG 103 class

Honest opinion? I like him. Great educator. Knows a lot of random facts and stories and can recall them from the top of his head when its somewhat relevant. He's the kind of guy you want to hangout and have a drink with, in hopes he would make you smarter while you've been drinking. It's like he's fortune cookie wise with his advises on revisions.

Honestly when I walked in Prof Mayfield's class first day of the semester, I definitely had my pre-judgements (I thought it was going to be a boring class). But he is seriously a freakin hilarious/intelligent teacher. This isn't a class you can afford to miss since he gives a ton of in-class points but he makes it fun in his own way. Great guy.

Rarely had homework but had 6 major essays! LOTS OF IN CLASS GROUP QUIZES! No final or midterm. Very cool & reasonable. He can be lenient. Taking him for 103 this semester!

Never takes attendance but almost no one ever missed class. I would take him every semester if I can. Because of his class I added English as my second major.

He is very interactive with his students and enjoys when the class interacts with him back. Very helpful with assignments and answers emails quickly. If you're an English major and like working with groups very often then you'll like this class. He is a really good professor who will actually teach you something after you finish taking this class. His class is not that hard as long as you do the work, show up, and turn in the essays. Other than that I would recommend him.

Grading criteria is clear and easy grader. Literary terms quiz work 20 points and 4 essays so study. Put in the effort and you'll pass with a B or higher.

The professor is good at answering all your questions or concerns. Mr. Mayfield is very nice and clear with the class concept. Also, the group quizzes occur daily and they are worth between 4-6 points. Which it is okay to miss one day. He is also quite humorous at times.

Professor Mayfield is a really nice man. He tells a lot of good stories and ties them into his lectures. He offers a lot of extra credit. And you learn one of your greatest lessons in college writing from him, to conform to your audience. There are 6 essays and he lets you drop your lowest essay grade. Only complaint is a lot of group work.

I took his English 100 class and thought he was fantastic, he was a bit tough of a grader but once I worked a bit harder on my paper and followed his instructions, my essay grades went up. I liked him so much i took him again for his Eng 103 class, solid teacher but get ready to work, no free rides

Phil is really interesting and gets you thinking. Activities to work your brain and discussion to share ideas (and sometimes, debate). I increasingly grew tired of the group activities but other than that, he has achievable expectations and wants his students to learn. Definitely read or at least pay attention to what he says bc it matters!

I took both ENG 100 and ENG 103 with Mayfield and I loved every minute of it! He gives a clear outline of what he expects for all assignments and his grading is fair. He gives plenty of extra credit opportunities and every essay has a chance for a rewrite. Lots of group work. Pay attention to his lectures; they're informative and hilarious!

Overall, this professor was good. He gives you lots of homework, and reading materials, and has 4 major exams. If you want to succeed in his class, you want to listen carefully to what he says. It was difficult class, and if you can other classes that needs less studying hours, you should go for that one.

As long as you do all the modules, assignments, and essays you'll do great. Although, I would say sometimes his modules are time consuming, but at least you get to complete them on your own time. He is willing to help you as long as you email him or ask for a Zoom session. This is my 2nd time taking him (took him for Eng 100F) and I don't regret it

Professor Mayfield was awesome! He gave good feedback on every assignment and especially on essays. He told awesome stories with every lecture and kept each student very intrigued. Would definitely take his class again, as long as you show up and do the work on time you should be okay!

He is so far one of the best professor that you can have in Fullerton College. You have to do the group activities and read a lot everyday. Do not skip class because it may affect your grade a lot. If possible, please go to his office because he would give good advice to improve your essay. He is really nice and respected !
