this guy will teach you so much and he doesn't mess around. We also talked about movies all the time. Still remebers his students years after he has had them. I will never forget the knowledge i gained from his class.

Professor Polous is the first English instructor I really enjoy taking. He is funny and a great teacher. I learned to understand essays and movies more in depth. He encouraged us to write essays with our own voice. Show up in every session bec he explains the essays and can help you in your writing.

He isn't easy, but he's really nice & funny. You have to come to class every time, because he likes that. 3 essay, 1 is in class. He'll let you revise your essay to get a better grade, which is great!!!

His class could be difficult but I found that as long as u show up, ask questions, and have a great attitude towards the class, u'll do fine. He wants students to become great writers and even approaches his students quarters after taking him. He even remembered my name!

the topic he gives is not that hard, as long as you read the books. He is patient, and very funny. he always says,"Flip it real good" when he flips the page. Grammar has a grade for it. I don't think anyone failed in his class.

He is a very funny teacher. He doesn't grade hard and gives ample comments on your reports. Personally, the literature is boring, but if u stick it out and show up to class, then he'll take that into consideration.

The subject matter can be a bit boring, but if you show up to class and show some interest in the readings he will cut you some slack.He is sooooo funny! One thing, do not show up late for class....he takes it personal!

Good professo! Hillarious, and easy. He makes you write three 4-5page essays and a research papaer which is like 8pages. He is a professor you won't forget. Don't miss class, show up and participate. I got an A in his class, he'll make you like english.

He is A** h*** that accused me of plagerism, which wasn't true. Anyway, he's not all that difficult as long as you participant in discussions. Make sure you understand the reading and movies he shows.

The reading bored me to tears....I've had to read these classics a million times already. I would count down the minutes in this class-as he always said the same jokes and our lectures went on and on about nothing interesting. The pressure to NEVER miss a class was annoying and ridiculous. Whatever, Prof, understand that most of us here at this school work, have kids, and are trying to do our best! He bothered me, can't really pin point it.

Good teacher, exposes you to writers that you don't normally read. Grades fair, just show up for class do the work and do not be late. recommend him

I don't think theres lot of negative comments about english teacher in CSULA. I research the comments to see which teacher to take for ENG 102 and almost everybody had a postive experience. I guess its the nature of the job. Take poulos, I liked his jokes.

Poulos is a very easy teacher. He is not boring at all and he always has jokes coming. He is very funny and we got to watch movies in class, then we had to write about them. The essays were easy all you have to write about is your opinion. I highly recommend this teacher.

watch old ass movies. couple of them are good, but u get tired of wathing movies that were not made recently and ones that he likes. the only ppl who understand the movies are ppl who were born in that time. if ur young u might not understand the movies. essays 1.5 pgs long mostly about criteria of movie

you must go to class everyday because you'll be watching some movies to include in your paper and read everything. partcipant in class to get extra pts. 3 essay. first 2 is 4 pgs long. final essay is 4-6 pages long. MUST PROOF READ TO GET A GOOD GRADE. he's funny and very kind. type of man you want to respect.

Excellent English professor, very cool guy and extremely helpful with writting assignments. Turn in all the work, revisions, and you'll be fine. Highly recommended....Movies will be a bit boring, but its alright....

Fantastic professor and a fantastic class! He is truly a professor who loves reading and loves discussing books. He's not a professor that's great because he's easy; he's great because he makes you think. He wants students to learn and express themselves and is very open-minded to new ideas. He is really good,funny, but sometime he a little weird, 3 essay, no midterm, no presentation, 2 in class essay(write the first draft in class then he return it to rewrite, the 3rd essay is take home final)he grade really hard on grammar(recommend to the tutoring center), watching couple of movie and essay topic related to the movie. He gave too many reading assignments and you only end up using 2 or 3. He is extremely weird but you learn alot and get a laugh out of it too. Recommended but not an easy A.

Very cool teacher. He has a really good sense of humor. I had him early in morning at 8am and not once did I ever fall asleep. Only 3 essays (2 in-class & 1 take-home) on the mandatory daily readings. Readings are pretty dull though, since the theme of the class is: Critical Thinking. But overall, good class!

This class is easy the way he teaches it but dont think that means you dont have to read. READ the books. Don't use sparknotes or any website because he WILL give you a NC for plagarism.

Funny teacher. Watch a lot of movies then write about them. Very clear on what he wants from your essays once he gives it back for you to submit again.Every essay in the class should be filled with red markings since he's that specific on what he wants. Your essay will be raped but it doesn't mean its bad. Just adjust it and you'll do good.

A very easy class.You read a couple of essays from the book, then you watch a movie, and then you just have to write a essay about what you read and the film. You get your essays back for revisions and a higher grade. You will probably have 4 essays in total.

You watch movies, read, discuss and write about it. I recommend taking him.

Best English teacher, if you want an A you must work hard attend the class on time, he's a great person, he respects and teaches from his heart, he is very smart, he knows everything, so don't try to look up things on the net and lie cause he catches you. his class is not that easy. the readings are really boring and hard to understand because it's based on philosophy. You may sleep through the movie he shows because it's in the 1950s. However, he's a really good teacher with his jokes and helps out his students to make sure they pass. Not easy to get an A, but work hare to get a B

He is pretty chill. doesnt assign much hw unless its revising essays. His lectures and just straight out of the book. Sometimes he would let you guys watch "I love lucy" in his class. Lol.

He has a good sense of humor. Learns names quickly and is picky about attendance and cell phones. If you read the works you will be fine. Only 3 essays.

Participation is required in order to get an A in this class. So if you're one of those quiet people lurking in class, you know the highest grade you'll get. There is a lot of reading involved but only 3 major essays. If you don't do the reading, it's difficult to participate. But it seems that he's the easiest 102 I've heard of.

EXTREMELY funny and very humble. easy going and interesting. not a lot of homework involved put 3 major essays. got to class because there will be movies to watch for the essay. he is a hard grader and is not easily fooled so no PLAGIARIZING! always jokes about being hungry all the time and his age. one of the funniest prof i've had so far

He's super FUNNY! Keep laughing for his jokes and humors for 2 hours. He is a hard grader. Make sure you read the reading assignments and speak good English in front of him, otherwise he fails you at the end. :(

Best English teacher ever! Very funny and very helpful with your essays. After you turn it in he will give it back with corrections and if you follow them you get a good grade. Just show up and pay attention. And make sure you do the readings! Don't be afraid to participate! He's easy to talk to and he's not judgemental.

Dr.Phil is awesome. A little weird at first, but you get used to it. Shows really great films that you would have never seen on your own time. Reading can sometimes be a bit boring, BUT IT IT A MUST! He knows if you didn't read! 3 essays(4 with the final) Corrects them and then lets you rewrite them for a better grade. Definitely take his class!!

FUNNY teacher will make you laugh about ANYTHING.. all you do is watch movies and talk about the stories you will incorporated in essay.. "maybe next year" what he says when you don't do the assignment.

Very critical of his students. Grades fairy and does his best to educate his students through humor or topics of interests. Fairly decent class.

He's very talkative and very helpful in whatever topic you do not understand. He grades his essays fairly based on what you give. Overall, he isn't too bad of an English teacher. He's also pretty funny and he makes his lectures interesting. You just have to write 3 essays total and no final.

I had him in fall 2011 - 2012?. Decent amount of readings. You watch movies. I don't know why people say his class is hard. English was never a thing for me, but if you participate in class & talk to him he's a really cool guy. when i had him you wrote a first draft, he'd tell you what to fix & then you turn it in a typed copy.

He's kind of a tough grader, but he has good taste in films and readings so the class is entertaining. Pretty fun for a GE class.

After failing English 101 twice, I finally passed it with him. His class is pretty straight forward.

Dr. Phil is very funny. Likes to act like he's not with it, but trust me, he is very sharp and observant. You must read to pass, he remembers names so participate, don't pull your cell out either. He's a tough grader but takes the time to correct your paper thoroughly, plus you can revise your essays (3 total) for a better grade.

Poulos Is a great professor. I went into this class hesitant because I heard he gives a lot of work and he is tough. But he is tough but fair. Reading and attendance is an absolute necessity. You had to write 3 essays for this class and I felt he graded them all fairly with helpful feedback. Poulos is the best English professor I've had ever!

Dr. Phil is an outstanding professor. The course is very straight forward; read two essays at home, watch one film in class, and then write an in-class essay based on the readings, film, and your own thoughts. The essays are very easy . DO NOT MISS CLASS! I got an A in his class and to be honest, it was not tough

I love his class and he makes me laugh, but I make sure to never miss any of his classes because it is very important to talk about the readings assigned for every class meeting. Very important you read all the readings he assigns for every class meeting. Most of the essays he assigns us to read from the book assigned are relatively short.

Dr. Phil is amazing! His class was so much fun. He is really funny. We watch movies and he assigns readings and then we write essays about them. He has discussions on the readings & the movies you watch. It's important to participate otherwise he gets annoyed. The readings aren't long and if you don't understand talk to him. He is super cool.

Poulos is SO funny! I had him at 8AM so everyone was too tired to get his jokes, but let me tell you- this guy is good. There are 3 essays where you compare readings to the films seen in class. 1. The readings are fairly easy because they're discussed in class and 2. The films are so interesting it makes you want to write a 4-6 page paper on it.

Dr. Phil Poulos is an amazing professor. He's a tough grader but he helps you become a better writer. I will recommend him to people who are hardworking. This class isn't an easy A, although an A is possible. Just remember that he is always there for you. Lectures are interesting! He's very organized on what he wants done. 5/5 **. He's a good one.

I LOVE Dr. Phil. He cracks jokes to break the ice and is very caring towards his students. You can tell he wants his students to pass and encourages to visit his office hours. The class itself was manageable, we read a few stories out of the books he requested us to purchase. The books are inexpensive and go hand in hand with the essay prompts.

FUNNNNNYYYYYYYY GUY. His class is a good one. A typical day is basically, going to class, he takes attendance, he asks you about the readings(posted on moodle), he talks about it, and he talks about some life stories that relate to it or just randomly talks about other stuff. Nice man.

He was a great teacher and I love his choice for the movies we watched. All we do is watch movies and use them with the readings from the book to write essays. If I am not wrong all you do is 4 essays, which is not much and pretty easy. Great teacher to take for English; I would recommend to take!

I have a love/hate relationship with Dr. Phil. He really made me work for my grade and I still barely passed his class, but he made me an incredible writer by making me question myself and my clarity. I love that he pushed me to do better and not turn in crappy papers. I have a lot of respect for him considering my major is a lot of writing.

He's really nice but can be boring because he just blabs on and on. He expects you to read each chapter but honestly he won't question you about the chapters you read, you just have group discussions about them. The mid terms are only essays about movies and quotes from the chapters you read!

He is one of the professors that care for his students. He will try to correct your mistakes and gives you a chance to make up the essay known as revision. Make sure to read the assignments. Plus by doing so you will gain knowledge throughout the class. He isn't easy but not too hard. You have to work for your grade. Gives you time to do your essay

Dr. Phil is one of the best professors that I have taken at Cal State LA so far and maybe forever. HE IS REALLY FUNNY, as soon as I entered the room and saw him, my I would automatically smile LOL. I learned stuff that I never did before and those things are important in real life as well. Sometimes he talks about food or stories which is fun lol.

I had Professor Phil Poulos for ENGL-1010-47 and so far he has been my favorite professor for my first semester in College. I highly recommend taking his class. He is fun and funny. You watch a lot of movies and read short readings and write essays about them. He gives you feedback on your essays so you can improve them and get a better grade.

We had weekly readings and discussions in the following class session. We also watched 4 films that would last 2-4 class sessions. We wrote 3 3-4 page essays using our readings and the movie as sources. The third essay is our final. I really appreciated his feedback on his papers especially when I made my 2 revised essays. I recommend taking notes.

One of the funniest and most helpful teacher. 3-4 essays, and as long as you fix the mistakes you make during your rough draft, your grade will go up. Really straightforward, 3-4 movies that lasts 2-4 sessions, and helps you with the essays if you ever needed help. The best at csula!

Amazing and funny professor. Make sure you there every day and participate and youll pass. Dont sleep or be late to class cuz hell get mad. Attend his office hours and he would help you with essays and give you points.

This is an easy class. This man grades a little harsh. You will literally get your paper back with a lot of red markings. Go to office hours and participate and you will be fine. He ducks point off for being on your phone! He literally watches everyone like a hawk.

Decent professor! A lot of reading and and movies that are incorporated in essays. Cares to give students feedback but feedback can be a little harsh at times. Do not take this class if you do not like reading!

Total of 4 papers all but the last one are revised and each paper uses a reading and a movie watched in class, making connections b/w them. Your papers will come back looking red with his feedback, do exactly what he says and youll be fine. Go to office hours he will help you and give you points.
