A very good teacher. Anyone who needs eng. 101, without a doubt you should take him. You just mostly sit down in class and listen to him read interesting essays. And if it is not interesting he doesnt even continue.

The book was horrible, but teacher made class interesting. Took him 4 winter then Eng 103 in spring(got B's in both). He made writing interesting and simple. Poulos is an amazing person. The work isn't easy, but he keeps it from becoming too difficult. He is a very understanding, intelligent, professional, and compassionate professor. He has inspired me, along with many others, in countless ways AND he has an incredibly witty sense of humor to boot. Take one of his classes! It was a true experience.

Oh child, with that spelling, you probably urned your low graid. Great sense of humor, generous-gives lots of advice for rewrites to help with your grade. Has a very unique, calming reading style. If you don't like English, I recommend him-he makes it more enjoyable. And you get to watch movies.

Dr. Poulos is a great professor, perhaps the best. He has a deep understanding of intricate composition and assigns only the greatest works of literary art to his students. I was in high school when I had to take this class to make up credits. Dr. Poulos and his class pretty much convinced me to go to Valley and save money instead of going directly to a UC. He's a really smart and funny man, and he still remembers me to this day (this class was 3 years ago haha).

Poulos is a really good teacher. As long as you do what he says, not even really try, and attend the class, youll pass. If he sees that your interested in the class, hell give it his all to try to help you. You pretty much watch movies, analyze them, and write essays about them.

A fun and influential class. Prof. Very very helpful!!! Very enthusiastic about the short stories that we read. This class is fun. The hardest class I have ever taken! But learned a lot! He is sarcastic and constantly picks on students. But that what makes him different and fun. The are no tests, just essays. All assays are in class. We watched movies and did some reading, I wouldn't advice you to buy a book, get it in the library. never be late to class. never use your cell.

Genuinely cares about his students, has a PhD, is passionate, knows his students by name, & demands respect. (Be on time & don't play with cell.) Lots of reading & the 3 essays were challenging! Follow directions, ask the Prof. for guidance, & put in a 110%. You will FAIL if you use Spark Notes or other cheating sources. Hard work earned me an A!

I took english 102 with him and i got an A. I hated reading but the stories he assigned were very interesting. The class is very easy if you read and attend to every class. Ok i loved his class. The movies were interesting and time literal flew by. Hes very understanding and really does try to get to know you. He goes the extra mile take his class. I am not smart and I learned a lot in his class. Don't take this class if you are going to be absent a lot or be tardy all the time.

He's a pretty funny guy! Always welcoming in to his students. There's sometimes a hint of sarcasm but he's still cool. No homework, watches a movie once a week, and writes an essay about it the next day, and sometimes releases us early. Time really flies in the summer but it's really fun! One of his catchphrase is "Isn't it Wonderful?" xD

Grading can seem arbitrary, but he's generous with re-writes. Sincerely cares about every single student, zero tolerance for cell phones, old-world charm and humor. Strongly advocates lean writing, don't be verbose and ditch the thesaurus.

Wonderful professor, if you have a decent ability to write you will pass. He even lets you correct your papers to turn in for a chance at a better grade.

He is REALLY serious about attendance. You miss more than one class, you're exempt. Now, this class is really easy as long as you TRY. He almost has a routine. 1. Show a movie, 2. Read an essay or two, 3. Write a paper comparing the two. He gives good advice and I honestly feel like I came out of that class as a better writer.

Watch a film, read a few storiesessays, & comparecontrastconnect film with essays or stories that were read. Essays are written in class and turned in the same day so attendance is a must. Gives you 1 chance to improve each written essay for a slightly higher grade. Made class not to burdensome.

One of the best Professors I ever had! He is very clear about what he wants and gives you a lot of chances to improve. Does the corrections for you on your paper. Make sure you attend class or he will drop you himself!! Watch a movie, discuss the reading, write an in class essay, and repeat! He is very helpful and willing to chat.

Watch a movie every week, read 2-3 assignments every week, write about the connection between the readings and movie in class, and turn in essay. He'll correct your essay and grade it. He gives you a chance to improve it to get a higher grade. A lot of people find it difficult to get an "A" on the essays even after corrections.

"Takes very personal," it's a college course, why wouldn't it be personal? Excellent instructor, respectable man and always willing to help us students, if only we'd stop playing with the cell phones in class, CLASS!

Great proffessor . Gives many chances to improve your grade on assigned essays. If you're a clear thinker and are able to have your thoughts flow on paper with pen easily, able to follow essay directions, able to attentively screen and find a connection with the films and readings-then this class is a breeze. Put time and thought into essays.

Dr Phil cares. Follow essay directions. READ the required readings. PAY ATTENTION to the movies. DONT leave class early. ATEND class. STOP using cell phones during lecture or movie. DONT rush your essays to leave class early. PUT thought into your work. It's a college course, take it serious and be mature about it. He's there if you need help.

I loved his humor. He cares about you learning. I wanted to fail just to be able to take him again. But I passed, I had to. I have much respect for Dr. Phil and his interesting choice in movies.

NO HOMEWORK! Only in class essays which are based on the movies he shows, which are superb. He is a classy, wise, timeless professor although he can be snarky, intimidating & rude, especially if you ask dumb ?'s. He grades hard but he lets you rewrite his essays with his corrections and turn them in for a better grade. 7 page MLA cited FINAL essay.

Only need to buy 1 book, can get on online for $10 or less. Read assigned book pages & attend class every week for movie viewing & in class essays & you will pass. However he'll fail you if do not turn in 7 page final cited MLA format essay. Do not use cellphone or miss class, he will notice, remembers everyones names by heart and might drop you.

Dr. Phil is a tough grader on the in class essays, but he gives pretty decent feedback and lets you revise them for a higher grade. I think his lectures are pretty funny, and he's pretty laid back as long as you're not late or on your cell phone. I would have taken him again if his 102 class wasn't so early.

One of my favorite classes I have ever taken. I usually struggle with writing but he is very forgiving. You write about 4 essays comparing short readings and movies that you watch in class. The movies are very interesting and have lots information to write about. He gives you chances to rewrite your essays after he gives feedback. Loved the class.

If your major requires you to write reports or arguments then this is the class to take. Dr. Polous seems to enjoy teaching which I have found to be rare. He will not tolerate cheating . You will have in-class assignments which he will edit grade and return to you. If can raise your grade by revising your work. He is a fantastic instructor.
