strange how he makes such an interesting subject so damn boring!
This man has to be the most hum drum prof. ever. He loves the Phil Collins.
awesome teacher, will work with you, dont read book just notes off the net=A
Boring lectures, but learned more than I thought
His lectures are mad BORING!!
class is extremely boring, but no need to read the book.
he is very boring and monotone
you have to go to class and take notes...lectures are boring..monotone voice
test are easy if you read the book and go to class. do extra credit it helps alot. pretty nice guy but kinda boring
This class was very easy. test were fair. but he's kind of boring at times
easy class very easy a kind of boring at times but will work with students when they need it
aweful!!!!!have him for 2 classes..AWFUL!
If you care about social issues at all you should find this guy's class interesting. I don't know why the others are complaining. His class is really easy if you are willing to listen to the ideas he presents. Don't sit in the back.
BORING, but easy. Follow his online notes and go to class. Don't buy the book. Tests go by the notes.

I HATE HIM!!!!! SOOOOOOOOOOOO BORING.
Very BORING never-ending lectures. He requires you to do a 50 minute group presentation, which sucks. Did I mention BORING? He is BORING.
Smart teacher, but is very hard! His tests are rediculously hard to understand. Don't take this class unless you won't to study your butt off and make a C.
do not take this class
This is the Pop Culture class. I graduated with University Honors...trust me on this rating. I took this class thinking I would get an easy A. This is not an easy class, so if you're a senior, take music appreciation or something else. DO NOT TAKE THIS!!
Required 5+ page paper. Fairly easy multiple choice tests. Got a B when I was expecting an A! (Got a C on the stupid paper!)
If you're there for one lecture you've heard them all. It's the same thing over and over in different form.
Interesting lectures
do extra credit!!! it helps a lot..boring at times
Certainly not one of the best professors. He is extremely boring and his tests can contain some ridiculous questions. Not a very nice guy either, he always seems to have a chip on his shoulders. He yells at students for very minute things.
I THOUGHT THE CLASS WOULD BE FUN BUT HE PROVED ME WRONG
lectures are hard to listen to, but he is a great guy
Oh my God... I cannot beleive I never fell asleep! He is totally boring and speaks in a monotone voice. All we did was listen to his lectures, write 2 papers and give 1 group presentation -- if you mess up on 1 paper, uit will be hard to pull grade up.
Very smart man, but he does just seem to keep on talking endlessly, tests are very easy, just always look for the most liberal answer. I think he may be socialists, but still cool.
pay attention in class. Take notes and make A. Test ridiculously easy.
boring!!! I think I only went to class a few times and still received a decent grade. There is a paper for pop. culture. which sucks!
his class, by far, is the hardest to stay focused in, it may be the shear simplicity of the whole concept, the class size, or just his teaching style, but honestly, today, i fell asleep for a good ten minutes
He's a good teacher and gives easy test. The key to a A or B is GO TO ALL THE LECTURES. It's as simple as that. Read the chapters twice for undrstanding and study the notes. You can study his notes two days before the test and recieve really good grade.
Good man...class can be a little slow at time, but what class isn't? I recommend him to anyone, he's a very smart man!

boring, spends all of class covering a few topics, do better to just read the book and get notes offline

This guy is the most boring man on the EARTH! I think he almost falls asleep from the sound of his voice. I went 5 days all semester and still got my C. thank god that is over!
Wonderful course, wonderful man. Very insightful.
This guy must have a shrine to Britney Spears in his house, he talks about her ALLLLLL the time! The class is boring, as long as you download the lecture notes you don't even need to go, because all he does is read them throughout the class!
OH MY GOSH! He is the most boring and opinionated teacher I have ever had! If you wanna fall asleep and get a decent grade, take this class....
take this man only if you want lectures everyday about the "evils of capitalism" and why america is bad. if you start to argue with him he'll stop calling on you. not a very smart man, definite child of the 60's. belongs at unc asheville or berk
no good dirty rotten stupid hippie. do not take this class, nothing but lectures on the "evils of capitalism". no real information provided, horrible teacher, very boring and EXTREMELY biased to the left. MOVE TO CUBA IF AMERICA IS SO BAD!
I am not sure what the point of attending class is anymore. I thought this would be an interesting class... however this is the "vampire of american values". if you need credit for lbst 2101 go ELSEWHERE!!! so abstract and boring.
this class is sooo stupid all we do is talk about american values. no where in the title of the course does it say american values. he talkes about the same thing day after day. it is soo boring. and he wonders and gets mad when no one comes to class.
Very Boring!!!! He is a nice teacher but like i said VERY BORING
He told me that after all my study tactics there was nothing he could do for me since i couldnt pass a test. he is a bad professor
Very dry and boring, but not a horrible teacher.
boring boring monotone avoid like the plague
Very insightful and interesting to listen to. Can be a little monotone and repetive. Learning concepts is very important in this class.
Even though everyone seems to have something negative to say about Mr. Rutledge, I think that he is a very good teacher because he is very clear in his lectures. If you simply pay attention and don't goof off there is no way you should get below a B!
Worst teacher ever!!! If you have to take Sociology, take someone else...unless of course you enjoy studying hours for a test and making a C in the class!!!! very boring and monotonous!!!!
I'd rather lick my own butt.
HORRIBLE teacher! Boring and talks as if he's teaching a bunch of 1st graders. Test are wordy and definitely based soley on his opinion. Don't take the class, you can sleep at home!
Just do the work, not hard, boring...yes. very boring.
boring its a horrible course.... pointless
I had Rutledge for two classes this semester, the 1960's and Am. Values. If you don't mind being bored to death, take his classes. They're an easy A. You don't even have to go to class, just take the tests and do the group presentations. Boring, but easy.

I never heard someone talk so much and say nothing important. This subject could actually be interesting if the professor didn't ramble and wasn't so biased. Very hard adn test questions are unfair and unclear. Word from the wise, take someone else.
I think this teacher is pretty good, he explains material throughly...my problem is the class is very repetitive and can get boring. I dont like that semester paper is given back on day of final.
awful class....tests based on his opnion...cant understand tests bc he uses huge words....dont take this professor...HORRIBLE TEACHER HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!
hes the worst teacher ever. i studied my butt of and still made a C. dont take this class unless you plan on working you butt off for nothing! lectures are hard to follow and his curve consists of either one point or two points. has monotone.
This man is an imbecile. He hates everything American with a passion. Teaches nothing about sociology, instead he lectures on his biased leftist opinion. Typical leftist prof. VERY BORING TOO. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
HE SUCKS
He is an awful teacher. Tests are hard and have nothing to do with his lectures. He hates Greeks, so if you're greek...avoid him at all costs. He's an absolute butthead to ALL greeks.
Worst class EVER!!!! Test questions are mainly based on his opinion. Study, take notes, read the book and go to class like crazy and you might get a low B!! Well thats what i did anyways. Good Luck with this one
You got to be crazy if you consider taking this class with him!! In fact don't even take your time to read this! Find another professor for this class!
Excellent teacher! Very interesting lectures! If you take the time to go to class, read his online notes, and read the book, then you will absolutely have no problem with this class.
THIS GUY SUCKS!
Um, kinda boring, but at times class is interesting. Not a big sociology buff, and he didn't help, but overall he's not that bad.
lecture class that is 50 minutes of lecture. no attendence, class can be boring. read book, but test come straight from notes from class. tests are easy
No Comments
he explains everything thoroughly and will go over it again if you ask. all you have to do is pay attention and read some. if you think he is boring then you should participate more in class.
This man is Karl Marx incarnate. I've never seen such an anti-American, anti-capitalist person in my life as Phil Rutledge. HORRIBLE.
Wow where do i start? He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He talks for the whole 50 min of the class and then asks you if you have any questions. Um... Please dont ever ever ever ever ever ever take this class. It is the boring class in the wo
He's not my favorite teacher in the world, the class was not hard though if you buy the books, do the paper, and go to it.
What a joke Talks the ENTIRE fifty mins, dont eat in class. If your a good multiple choice test taker will do well. I did my term paper the day it was due and turned it in a day late still got a 92 and minuse five for late. overall easy a
I liked him alot. But I am liberal. Suppose I'd be pissed too if I were conservative. Class is like listening for NPR for an hour a day. You can learn alot but that's probably why greeks hate him! If you don't like him it probably because you're stupid!
Extremely liberal, opinionated & that is what he bases his lectures on. Doesn't give a balanced view of topics; if you're conservative, even a little, you'll probably get pissed listening to his lectures. But interesting. Go to class and you'll do fine.
EVERYONE ELSE IS CRAZY! PHIL FOR PRESIDENT! SUCH AN EASY AND STIMULATING CLASS!
This is such an easy class. If you go to class regularly and take good notes, you should be fine. The material is interesting.
Class can be repeatitive. Print out the notes online and follow them as a guideline for class and you will not even have to attend. Teacher is smart but does tend to get boring!
STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM THIS TEACHER!!!! TREATS YOU LIKE CHILDREN!
Class is boring but the topic of the class is boring. Very easy class though, just come to class and do what he says and you should have an A. For the required group presentation, make sure you include videos because he likes that, don't just read off papers. Don't be afraid to speak up either.
I went into this class thinking I would learn history all around the world, I did not sign up for American Values 101. He is a very boring teacher and very liberal. His tests are easy though, as long as you go to class and listen to the lecture.
this is one of my best classes this semester, very easy tests if you go to class, do not even have to read the book, people who don't like him are probably stupid
very good teacher
good class
No Comments
He is very good. He clarifies himself many times. His class does tend to get a little boring, but if you go and pay attention and read you will do very well on the tests. Plus, the final is not a cumulative exam, its just the recent chapters you've done in class.
Great teacher, but there is no need to go to class. You can make an A without ever being there.
Horrible! The teacher was soooo boring and he uses this dumb microphone that gets annoying to listen to after a while. I thought the tests were hard even if you read the book and go to class. do not take with this professor
tests are easy, journals are hard.Easy to make an a B, but you have to try for an A. Nice guy, but if you hate liberals don't take him.
This was an awesome class, sure it was a little boring, but the test came straight from the notes and book! No homework, and no quizes, just four tests. I would def take him mwf i dont know if you could stay awake for him on tr!
My only complaint about this class is that it's too easy. The lectures are very interesting. So are the movies. Rutledge is a nice guy and his extremely insightful. If you want an easy A or if you are a Republican, Rutledge's class will be perfect for you.
Easy class, just use the notes from the internet on the first test. Going to class is helpful; you wont have to study hard for the tests. DO NOT WRITE A CONSERVATIVE PAPER. You'll still get a good grade, but not as good as writing a liberal one.
At times he lectures non-stop. He was responsive to me when I asked him to let us input more frequently. It is an easy class if you do all the reading and actually attend. Most of test questions are addressed in lecture. I liked him.
He is a pretty good teacher. Lectures are important to attend. Tests come mostly from lecture. I touched the book maybe two times all semester and good a B. Not too hard but can be boring a lot. I got a lot of good naps in that class.
Phil is a decent professor, lecture can occasionally boring. No assignments for this course. Lecture attendance important, test straight from notes. I never opened my book, got a B for final grade.
This professor is decent. The tests are easy if you come to class b/c the questions are directly from the notes. He does a good job with emphasizing things so you know what is important and what is not.
Very knowledgable, doesn't need notes professors are SUPPOSED to take the 50 min, it's the class period. Interesting, LIBERAL (u dont need to be republican at all to pass better to be democrat), papers aren't hard, i didn't buy the book and got As, internet notes, doesnt like interruption
pretty easy. don't waste your money on a book though i never used it and it wouldent have helped. he puts notes online. droped lowest test grade. my lowest was like a 78 and i went 4 times that month counting the test. he is boring but easy.
Great teacher, but he's sometimes a little boring. Go to class and you'll pass the tests, especially since he drops the lowest test score. Be sure to do the extra credit offering too... it meant the difference between an A and a B for me.
hey is a very boring teacher that wears this stupid microphone! you will do well in the class if you take notes and study. you don't really need the book, but its more interesting than the lectures. he's ok, not the best but i like him
interesting class, his little microphone is kinda wierd but i enjoyed the lectures for the most part. never had a problem with his tests as long as i did a little studying. good overall
I love this teacher!! He doesn't take attendance!! Easiest tests. Don't bother studying, it's all easy if you think his way, LIBERAL. Think liberal, think open minded, think Rutledge and you NEVER have to attend class! Enjoy...
This teacher is one the best that I know this semester. He might only be boring to you, if you are lazy and stupid to let him know your problems.
i hated his class! the teacher gets annoyed when you pack up 2 min before class is over or if you leave the class room. he makes you feel like you're still in highschool
He is good, set in his ways, but good. know's his material--a little to well.
This class was dreadfully boring
Most insightful professor I've ever had. Gives an alternative perspective on society in general.
I might have gone to this class 8 times the whole semester and still pulled off a C. Tests are fairly easy if you memorize the study guide and look for the most liberal answer.
Very smart professor. Lectures are somewhat boring, but important to attend. He talks non-stop in a monotonous tone but listen carefully. Microphone so you can hear him even if you're in the back. Just go to the lectures and study your notes for an easy A
No Comments
Very smart and insightful teacher. His class is my favorite one this semester. If you dont like him, you must be an ignorant, close-minded religious fool.
I HATE THIS CLASS....His test are sooooo hard and he does make his point while he is teaching, you have to write everything he says and he just talks and talks....
I love Rutledge- he is my absolute favorite professor at UNCC! He's really knowledgeable about the subject matter and his lectures are interesting. He is also very friendly and helpful with whatever you need. You don't have to go to class a lot to do well. Few papers, no homework, but you'll still learn a lot. Take any class that he teaches!
Ehh, I suppose the reason I don't like him is because he probably wouldn't like me. You see, I am not a Bush bashing liberal, so I can't really take anything he says seriously. Good teacher though. Just talks crap, that's all.
The subject matter is interesting, but his monotone voice makes it seem very boring. He seems like a cool, liberal, laid back guy (who talks about tripping on acid) but for some reason, I just can't get into his lectures!
The man is a tool. His class is all about the takeover of captialism, every class he says the exact same thing and his assignment (10 page paper) is completely unclear. This class is a complete waste of time.
This class with Rutledge is a waste of time. It's more like a class about his political views. I would not recommend Rutledge for anything. He was unclear about the large class project which is worth a test grade. He just talks & talks... no specifics on what's actually important.
He is a great teacher. He lets you know exactly what is important and I loved this class. One of the best professors I have had at UNCC.
very hard class. the tests are SO confusing. and he talks like he is the book. i hated this class. dont take it if you dont have to!
I love Rutledge. It's my second time having him as a professor and he's very clear in his lectures. It's like he speaks in essay form all of the time. I don't see why people don't like taking his classes--he doesn't ask much. If you simply go to class and listen, you will pass with flying colors. I really like this professor.
Talks wiht a stupid microphone thing... really boring a lot of time but the actual material is awesome if you take the time to thinka bout it. Final isn't cumuplative....no attendance...overall not too bad
Intelligent, really knows his material but this class is very difficult. The tests are very hard and it almost seemed impossible to be fully prepared for them. I guess you will do well if you are very liberal and you agree with his views. I would not recommend him or this class. Also, make sure your paper is what he wants to hear.
if you go to class, take notes, take tests on time and do the extra credit, then there is no way you cant get atleast a B. it is an easy class as long as you go, and attendance is not required.
gets the info across, very obsessed with the 60's but picks iteresting info.
Very hard class! do not take this guy, he is awful and does not care about his students. Tests were incredibly difficult and a ton of reading was involved. Huge 10 page paper also.
Phil will listen to other sides, but like everyone, he sticks to his own beliefs. I didn't enjoy this class very much. Literally failed the test, but made up for it with my paper and presentation. Not my favorite class, but Phil isn't such a bad guy. He says things to get his point across and people misinterupt it. (ie: sex partners, tripping acid)
Way too liberal. In fact, the class is more of a Bush Bash than a lecture on pop culture. His narrow-mindedness was frustrating and a distraction in class...however, this whole flaming liberal thing put my mind to ease once i saw his "pretty toenails." yuck.
One of the best teachers at UNC-Charlotte
He repeats himself and just makes things more complicated then they are. Every class I look around and there are at least 10-15 people asleep!
Lecture based class. he goes off on tangents a lot. Go to class , listen, take notes, and everything should be fine. Make sure you study before the tests. His tests are not based off what the book says i never opened my book once. his tests are based on his lectures. He offers an extra credit paper which will boost up your grade a full letter grade
boring as hell... but usally a huge lecture class so you can fall asleep
I loved Rutledge!-- He is incredibly intelligent and knowledgable-- you have to ATTEND all his classes to get the most out of them (most people in my class did not ever attend) if you listen to lecture you will get an A. I found him understanding when I asked for an extention on my paper. I learned more in his class than any other I've taken.
I love Mr. Rutlege! He is an awsome supremely knowlegeable prof. I can't believe he got any bad ratings--- probably from people who do not attend all of his classes-- if you attend and pay attention to the concepts you will get an A. Mr Rutlege is also very accomodating and friendly.. He is truely passionate about the subject he teaches.
Class was extremely boring because all he did was lecture for over an hour and a half. he never lets us out early and we're only graded on 4 tests. the test are SOO hard, even if you study. He doesn't offer much help. The classes are so boring because all he does is lecture with no class discussion.
Class is boring but he is a good teacher and he is sometimes funny. Some things are interesting but not many. take notes and you'll pass the tests
Rutledge was a great teacher. He knows his stuff. Yes, you have to take notes and pay attention, but this is college people.
In order to do well in this class, you must take class note as much as possible and you will be going well in the test. Most of the exam question come from his lecture. Sometime he makes it even easier for student to obtain class note by going to his website. This class is not hard , but you really need to pay attention and it can be tedious
His new thing is he now reads directly from powerpoint slides which he posts on the internet. It is very hard to stay focuses cus it is SO boring. He doesnt take attendance and you can get everything off the internet. All the grades are 3 multiple choice 50 question exams and 1 big paper(i recomend starting it early) and one extra credit paper.
class is so boring. he gives you one other grade other than test and that is a extra credit assignment that has to be like 13 pages for him even to consider it. no point in taking notes because he reads straight off power point that he puts online. HORRIBLE!!!
THIS IS THE BEST TEACHER IN ALL OF UNCC... very smart, very intelligent, acute, deep, and insightful analysis and observation of pop culture... very interesting lectures for those who have a brain...
He doesn't check attendance, but if u want to make a good grade u need to go to every class. His test questions come mostly from the class notes (u don't even need the book), so if u don't go to class u won't do well on the tests. It's an OK class, it's just BORING! I have a high B right now...it's possible to make an A.
Do NOT take this class unless you are a history person and like all history topics!!! And willing to sit and listen to him go on and on for three hours!
DONT TAKE HIM unless you exspect to make a C. It is not an Easy class. His tests are SO hard and SO confusing and everyone did bad. He also gave a pop quiz and took off 15 points from everyones FINAL grades that were not present (insted of just a 0 or no points everyones grades dropped 2 letters). He is also cocky and a bit arrogant. DO NOT TAKE
He lectures from the entire class non-stop. It is helpful if you print off his powerpoints before hand and take notes as he goes along in class. He goes through notes very quickly. I would recommend that you come to class everyday otherwise you miss out on his examples that ARE on the test. Very knowledgable professor & gives an extra credit essay.
He is very knowledgable about this subject, primarily because he is/was a "hippy". His tests are hard, but if you print off his powerpoints and study guides you should be fine. There is a group project in this class that he assigns for you, but it is easy. He tells you about his hippy days which is interesting, but he is quite intimidating at times
I had Rutledge for AMST 1960s and I thought he was a very knowledgeable person! Yes, the class is long and yes he does talk a lot, but the information is usually interesting. I personally love the 60s in general so maybe that's why I liked it. I don't think I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't want to learn something about that era.
The 1960s was a crazy era. This man makes it incredibly boring. He puts a liberal bias spin on the class, and half the time rants about Bush and not the 60s. Lots of movies, he grades very harshly, and does not make it interesting AT ALL. He rambles and repeats himself. He's not a BAD teacher, but by far not a GOOD teacher. I don't recommend him.
Professor Rutledge is ridiculous. I learned absolutely nothing in this class. The class is based entirely upon his opinion, and if you're not liberal you will not fare well. All I remember from this class is that conservatives and the religious are responsible for ALL terrible things in the world.
what's up with the little box he talks through? that was obnoxious! I hated his class, i went every time and learned nothing from it. he might be smart but he can't teach and makes class more boring than it should be.
EXTREMLY BORING! he talks in a monotone voice that will put u to sleep! The information was intersting but taught in a boring way. I would take his class again b/c attendence wasnt manitory and test could b a lil cconfusing but you really have to study b4 hand! I wouldnt take him unless u understand concepts already
Rutledge is extremely boring. There is no point in going to class because his notes are on powerpoint and he doesn't take attendance. He speaks in monotone the whole time. Easy to make a good grade if you study the powerpoints and read the textbook.
I thought I would enjoy this class, but I was mistaking. Fairly interesting topic destroyed by a very boring lectures. Many books are required, but he's unclear exactly which book should be read when. Exams are quite difficult. 10-page paper due, and was never returned, so no clue how I'm standing.
Rutledge is somewhat of a hard teacher. If you have no interest in sociology, don't take the class. He is liberally biased, even though he tries not to be. I've had him twice. The first class I made a C, and the second I got an A. If you buckle down for the assignments & tests, you will make an A. (FYI, he is terrible at returning e-mails)
He can be a little boring, sometimes. However, the material is very interesting. You will learn a great deal about the 60s and especially Vietnam, if you take an interest. If you are a slacker looking for an easy grade, look elsewhere. You have to work in this class.
Learned so much from taking this class. The book tells the real history of the us, and not the stuff we were told in high school. All his lectures are basically summarized in his powerpoints, so as long as you look those over you will be fine. He definitely knows his stuff. I highly recommend.
Boring professor. Thought the class would be interesting, but he made it unclear and rather pretentious. I actually attended class about three times all semester, and wound up with a C. All his test material is in the power points, which he posts. DO NOT take this class!
knows his stuff, but very boring!i bought the book but never read it... cost more than 100 bucks. best thing to do is to print out powerpoints and label what he says
He is very liberal and tends to have worped views of how society should work. He also teaches by reading notes that are already on the internet directly off the board. There is really no point in going to the class
do not take this class, unless you can stand to listen to his monotone voice!! tests were kind of hard. first test was based on alot of videos he showed in class. attendence is not mandatory but if you dont go you definately dont have a chance.
Never take this class! EVER! This man is a sociopath, he lives in a delusional world that consists of liberal politics. He at one point claimed that the National Anthem was American propaganda. He also claims he supports southeast asian communism in small farm villages. I don't think I need to say anything else!
i had him for popular culture. I thought the class was going to be live and fun. He talked about a lot of old stuff that i couldnt relate to but he made the class very interesting! He is very smart and knows what he is talking about. Make sure to attend class and read the power point notes and read the book!! this is an easy B or C class!
I wish I didn't take his class.
This class is horrible. You cant understand anything he says and doesn't even teach about the power points in class. DONT take him!
This class is horrible. Total waste of time. He does't teach anything, just reads power-points to you for an hour that you can read yourself online. The way he subtly gets VERY liberal, at times warped, views into his lectures is nauseating. I was very interested in this subject until I took his class.
Professor Rutledge is SO SO SO boring! His voice is monotone and I had trouble listening to him at all. If you read the powerpoints and go over the book then you will do okay on the tests. I wouldn't reccomend him though because i was really excited for Sociology and he ruined it for me. Attendance was not mandatory.
Good teacher. Class can be somewhat boring. Study his slides to do well on tests. I am an accounting major so definitely not my cup of tea. I thought this would be more about current Popular culture; however about what forms Popular Culture. 3 Tests, Final is not Cumulative. One paper on Pop Culture. Extra Credit Option Available.
He covers quite a lot of material and goes very slow in the beginning but towards the end goes extremely fast with the course work. My suggestion is to stay one step ahead of him and read the chapters that he's assigned. The book is very insightful and I read from it very consistently. So long as you put in the effort you should pull out a B!
He is only boring if you are an idiot. Truly, this professor is brilliant and presents some of the most data and fact based arguments and philosophies there is. People call him liberal, but he is not. He just unveils the BS and brainwashing that every subscribes to. Really interesting, makes my head spin and gets me thinking. He is life changing.
This teacher is terrible. He can't teach and he doesn't know how to return emails. He is probably the worst teacher I have ever had. He's rude and not willing to help. Do not take this teacher. His class is so boring and his voice is so monotone. I was miserable in his class. Awful awful teacher!
He is extremely BIAS and LIBERAL! All of his test questions starts off with "According to the professor..." In this case, if you and him doesn't think alike, you won't do well on the tests. Also, he would ask for your opinion but if your opinion is different from his, he would criticize you and leave you rude comments. Stay away from his classes!
His multiple choice tests are hard. It goes like this: A, B, C, A and B not C, B and C not A. Pick one.
not helpful, at all. stuck on his own opinion. i suggest you avoid taking his class.
horrible teacher. not only did you not have to attend any of the classes, but he made it so that you never wanted to go. very monotone. rude when it came to others opinions.
He is a genious. Some of the other poor ratings are from slackers who like lax professors and mundance content. This guy will challenge you and you will be a better person once you are done with this class. An easy A ONLY IF you attend class everyday and do well on the only paper. Take it!
Rutledge speaks in a monotone voice and can be very boring, but he opens your eyes to a lot of things that you normally would not have thought about. You have to come to class because he takes attendance, but the notes are online so you dont have to take notes.
A power point is supposed to have key points, not an entire essay on one slide... He makes it almost impossible to take notes and listen to him. Not that, that really matters.. he will spend 45 min talking about one thing. I learn more from reading the text book myself than from attending class. And he's very monotone and somewhat disrespectful.
He is indeed very smart and he has a good class. You just have to actually show up because its hard to correlate between what he puts online and what he actually wants you to know.
Took twice; D both times. Class is every other week for 3 hrs. Attendance mandatory. ALL he does is show DVDs. I'm paying for expertise from an educated person; NOT FROM FILMS. His exams are tricky & he holds you in class until last minute. Takes interesting material & makes you pissed the 60s ever happened! He's smart but not in way he teaches.
SO BORING. I am normally very kind to the professors and appreciate their knowledge, but this guy is boring as hell. He is an awful teacher. He just stands up there and talks like he is reading in a monotone voice. His tests are hard, despite attending every class, reading everything, and studying. It is not a good class at all. Horrible.
Yes, his class is really boring, but you will survive. The tests aren't that bad, just memorize the powerpoints.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He is the worst lecturer EVER!! I feel like I'm sitting through the most boring church sermon ever. I litterally haven't been to one class that I was able to stay awake in this semester. BORING BORING BORING!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very boring class. All he does is stands and talks. He has slideshows that are 70 slides long and he will stay on one for the entire class. He will take attendence maybe 3 times. 3 test and the final, which is not cumulative. Study the powerpoints and read the chapters in the book, and the test aren't bad. If you like a fast moving teacher, he isnt
I took 2 classes with Phil. He is very knowledgeable, however he does talk...a lot. Coming in as a Freshman to his SOCY class, I could barely keep my eyes open to stare at his powerpoints while he spoke in a monotone. His tests are difficult, so study HARD. The AMST class I took with him was fun, but again, make sure you do your reading.
Although he may seem boring at times, his insight to the subject at hand is brilliant and he definently knows his stuff. Easy tests, no hw, no mandatory attendance. He was an awesome prof, who taught well to those who actually cared about the subject. I changed my major to sociology because of him. Take his class, especially if you like sociology.
Those who are complaining must not be interested in Sociology. I've taken three classes with him- Wester Cult, Intro to Soc, and Pop Cult. He is VERY interesting and has a great sense of humor. If you don't like sitting in a big room and listening to someone talks for an hour and a half, then don't go to college. And definitely don't take his class
oh gosh, this class was so incredibly boring. heavy use on the book. but he was nice enough, and he made himself available. gave extra credit, and papers weren't too bad. if you read the book you should be fine
I never wanted to come to this class unless it was test time. The test were DIFFICULT. He stands in front of an hour long class and will stay on ONE SLIDE for 30 minutes. You have to learn a lot on your own. I DO NOT recommend taking him for sociology. His voice is monotone and he does not make the class interesting, it is very boring!
He is awful.
Had him for Intro and Pop Culture. I like his style but if you're more hands-on and need a special kind of teaching method, be wary. He simply lectures with little to no class feedback, but the subject truly is interesting. Tests come from PowerPoints and book. If you do badly on a test, ask for the essay version! I recommend attending every class.
This teacher is hard when it comes to his testing. His class is somewhat interesting but the tests are nearly impossible. However, he does provide extra credit.
He is a good professor but his exams are a very difficult. Study hard. His lectures are interesting and he is a very smart man. I enjoyed his class and ended up getting in A in it. He lectures a lot, If you don't like listening to lectures, then this class and college isn't for you.
His exams can be hard. I ended up getting a B. Attendance and textbook not mandatory at all. He posts all lectures online. Class can be boring but he is VERY nice and helpful. He will allow students to retake exams in the week after he gives the papers back and if you missed the exam, he will give you a take home.
Pretty easy teacher, very dry lectures. You can tell hes really interested in the topic but all he does is talk from the first minute to the last. Tests are easy if you study the powerpoints which are online, attendance isnt mandatory. Extra credit paper mid semester. Dont buy the book, you dont need it.
Very good professor. He knows what he is talking about and is a very insightful man. One of the best teachers on campus. I highly recommend taking any of his classes offered.
Dudes boring, and lame. But class is easy. Attendance is mandatory he took me off the roster after I missed a few classes so I had to get a note explaining why. Easy class, didn't buy book. Got an A. Lame, but worth it.
This professor is awesome. He can be long winded and he tends to go on tangents a bit but i found them interesting. If you have an issue or need clarification he will always take time to help you out. His class is farely easy and his attendance policy is lenient. I didn't use the book and did pretty well.
I had him for Intro to SOCY and he was awful. Everyday there is a hour & 15 min. lecture. His test are every 3 weeks & the way he words his questions are ridiculous. He will tell you to study the power points & the study guide, but the study guide is word for word the power points. Be sure to staple your papers because he takes points off!
A wonderful professor who is extremely insightful and passionate. Plus he doesn't give you stupid busy work. I can't wait to have him again.
Had him for pop culture and intro to sociology. Tests are easy if you study; lectures are dry and boring and attendance is required; group projects are unclear and a pain to coordinate because he doesn't give you enough class time to work on them and his directions are unclear; 3-4 tests, 1 paper, and 1 extra credit paper. Would not take him again.
He is a very nice and passionate professor; however, his class is all lecture so it can be very boring. His tests are ok! He grades you on group work, as well as on moodle discussions, attendance, and tests. HINT: Attendance is always at the end of class so you can always get there late and still get the full points for it ;)
He knows what he's talking about but his lectures are very dry and incredibly long. He can be moody sometimes too. Requires a lot of group work and projects every week including a group semester paper.he isn't very clear about what he wants and is very cocky and is not very helpful or understanding
I dreaded this class. Professor is soooo boring. Lectures for the entire class time. The 4 tests are hard and the group projects are a joke! It was impossible to make a good grade. You could miss up to 6 days. Don't bother with the book. I didn't open it. overall I hated this class!
Instructor's lectures were boring. Also very political-based. This is a pop culture class, not a poly sci class. He also rambles a lot, let's no room for any discussion. The ppts he presents are not on Moodle, just the ppts from the book, his exam reviews, half relates to the book, ,and half according to him. Horrible, would not take again. EVER.
Notice how all of the bad reviewers don't mention the grade they got. He's an okay guy, boring lectures. This class is very basic, and he makes it really easy. Go to class and study his power points. No real reason to get less than an A in here.
Class wasn't that difficult but he wasn't the easiest to approach. Tests were easy because of study guides but class is mainly group projects that weren't that fun. Only take this class if you have to.
Never take this teacher!! He lectures are very boring and he rambles a lot. Definitely can tell he is a democrat and if you do not believe in his stances then you will not do good in this class
I took this guy back in 2011. It's true, he doesn't make it too exciting, and can do political rambles (I don't mind it, since he sounds like a newcomer to the Libertarian Party, haha!) But he's easy to talk to if you know what to ask. He gave me 10 extra points on my lowest exam (made it a B) because I talked so often after classes! :D
I can tell he's really passionate about sociology, but personally, it wasn't that interesting to me. Lectures can be dull, but hang in there. Study the Powerpoints and know your definitions for tests and you should be fine! Got an A on all my tests so far. Drops the lowest test grade at the end of the semester. Textbook isn't needed.
Be forewarned that he is very opinionated and many students disagree with him. Yet, if you come to class and listen to the lectures you will pass with an "A" or "B". I see no reason why anyone would get a lower grade. Another warning, his class is pure lecture, not much class interaction. Also, there are three group projects and a group essay.
Awful teacher! if your looking for a easy class this is NOT it.. there are only 4 test and group projects which are easy, but the test are SUPER HARD! I studied everything the powerpoints, lectures and text and still got 70 and below! hardest class I have taken. He is so boring and talks forever!! ... Don't need to buy the text DONT TAKE HIM!
He knows what he's talking about, but his delivery method isn't effective. It's hard to focus on what he's saying, and honestly the slides are too long to write in your notes, so it's hard to follow along. Nice enough guy.
This was the single least enjoyable class over the course of my entire college career. He lectures the entire class, every class and he goes off into long tangents most of the time that are somewhat relevant but very boring. The subject matter isn't hard, but it's a lot. I would only recommend this classprofessor to someone I really didn't like.
Tests are simple if you use the study guide. Lectures the entire class without much interaction. Requires several group projects. Easy A or B. Marks off points for not attending.
Rutledge's class wasn't bad at all and touched on interesting concepts but you really do need to review your material and attend most classes (he takes off points for incessant absences) if you want an A. You definitely need to ensure you secure a reliable group too. Otherwise, this course will be a thorn in your bum.
I absolutely friggin' love Rutledge. First of all, he does go off on tangents... But they are so random and engaging that you'll be laughing or finding yourself wanting to contribute. He talks a lot and his slides have LOTS OF WORDS. I recommend a laptop. Handwritten notes will eff you up. Group projects, ofc. I love the man. He's funny and cares.
Exceptional Professor, better teacher. He explains a four slide PowerPoint through one hour. He goes through and explains until you get it. Still don't? Go see him. He actually cares whether you learn or not. One tip: He is a sociology major. He explains history with behavior so be there for lectures. They matter more than the book.
Horrible. Grades are not given back in a good period of time and he rambles on about things that have nothing to do with the lecture. He can also be quite belligerentrude towards students when he is not in a good mood that day. Would never recommend him to anyone, but take this class if you want doable work and a long drag of a class.
he rambles a lot so just read the study guides and you will do fine on the chapter tests (not many). you can miss 6 classes and everything is posted on moodle, so all you really need to go to class for is to take the tests and meet and work with your group projects. He is very boring but the material is sort of interesting.
Absolutely awful professor. He does not make the class interesting AT ALL. He goes on and on with things and that makes it difficult to understand the information he is presenting. The TA team is relied upon far too much. I will never take him again!
Extremely boring lecturer, four group projects during the semester that are not bad but annoying bc of large group sizes (6-8 people). The only thing I appreciated was the study guides and power points on moodle that were great in place of reading the book when studying.
This class is SO boring! It wasn't hard at all but my goodness. If you want an hour and 15 minutes to drag on then you'd like him. I could barely stand sitting in the class as dreading going on the reg.
You will have a group project and you will have an attendence taker among your group. If your attendence taker will lie for you, you don't need to attend class. His lectures cane be boring however I had a Friday class so my attention span was on 0.
Lectures are long and boring. Gives powerpoints online, makes you do group projects.
Very easy. Posts all the powerpoints online, and creates study guides. You could get an A without going to class once. Attendance is taken by a group of students deemed the TA team, and as long as you're tight with your 'TA' or your group members will cover for you, you're good. Don't buy the book.
Only grades are 4 tests and 4 group projects. Pick your group wisely. Easy projects though. Tests are very hard, lots of trick questions. Smart teacher, but bashes religion a decent amount. Take him if you don't see an easier class.
He basically talks about the same thing every single class. You have 4 group projects with the same people all semester. Which is fine if you have a good group, every project is the same thing over and over again.
Amazing hair. Amazing lectures. Not to mention he's a major cutie ;)
The class is very straightforward. He actually does cover everything that is on the test so make sure you take good notes. Lectures last the whole class. There are study guides for the tests on moodle. What I recommend doing is having the study guide pulled up while you take notes so you can answer all the questions on them.
The class for SOCY was a joke. He had students grading our work and they made things difficult at time. Phil means well but should teach and grade HIMSELF instead of lettign students determine other students grade.
Lectures were great, very clear and engaging speaker, really knows what he's talking about. Lots of group projects though, which is never fun (lets you pick your own groups, but what's the point if you're a freshman and don't know anyone yet?). Text was on the pricier side as well (all though text is used, definitely get a copy).
Every class session (3 hour night class) consisted of at least an hour and a half of boring videos, with a side tangent for a half hour at the beginning of class. Group projects, no test reviews for the two major exams. Still trying to figure out what I've learned from the actual professor.
It was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. This man is NOT helpful nor is he a good professor. The group work is only 20% of your grade. A majority of your final grade will be the tests which are impossible because this man doesn't help you learn anything.
This class is the most boring class I've ever taken he literally stands in one spot and talks no pause or break. I don't even know what the bottom half of him looks like because he doesn't move. My class was 3:30-4:45 so i almost fell asleep. Lecture were long and not coherent even his emails are long drawn out. Doesn't cover everything.
This professor really knows what he is talking about!
Professor Rutledge was the most boring lecturer I've ever had. However, all the power points are online so if you miss class you don't miss much. You do have to work in groups with about 4-5 power point projects and he takes attendance. You can sign your name and leave if you need to. Final semester paper with partner. Overall, easy A.
This guy can talk for DAYS. The class itself consists of interesting topics but there is very little class interaction between the professor and students. Prepare to sit and stare at the powerpoint presentation the whole class. Make sure to get a good group for projects. Not a very motivational teacher. I've heard he has tenure.
If you take this class, good luck. He won't put your grades in the gradebook all semester. so you won't know your grade all year long. his lectures are incredibly boring and nothing he says makes sense. Happy College!!!
Attendance is a must. All the material on the test is covered in class and he posts all the power points online. There are 3 tests, a group paper, and the final which is made up of a essay (the essay question is in the syllabus) and 50 multiple choice questions. The book is a must. Overall, fairly easy class. Great Professor with great hair.
He doesn't seem to care about your education whatsoever and doesn't give any work to check your knowledge. Terrible class will never take him again.
All he does is stand in front of the class and preach the whole time. It's very hard not to fall asleep and there is never any class discussion
Every single class, Rutledge will completely bash conservatives and conservative media outlets. Literally, Every. Class. This gets very annoying considering politics have little to do with the class. The lectures are extremely boring and long. So, unless you enjoy constant belittling of a political party and long lectures don't take this class.
Spends most of the class bashing conservatism as an ideology, incorporates that mentality into his grading when grading papers, and when writing the tests. Long, boring, monotone and repetitive lectures, with the occasional movie/video sprinkled in, with very few grades. Would not take again, don't like listening to propaganda for an hour.
You will be graded on your opinion and receive poor grades if your opinion differs from his.
This is the most incompetent professor I have ever had in my history at UNCC (I am a Senior). He makes an introductory course harder than it should be due to his lack of uniformity among assignments. He even managed to forget to print off enough tests, leaving half the class taking the test online a week later then everyone else. Never take him.
He doesn't even teach, he just talks about politics all class. Literally EVERY DAY. Nothing else. Extremely liberal as well. Also wears the same thing every day lol.
So disappointed in UNCC for allowing Prof. Rutledge to continue to teaching here. He speaks in a monotone voice the entirety of the class, does not engage in class discussion, and grades based on group projects. You don't get individual grades. If you choose incompetent partners for the 1st project, you're stuck with them. Terrible class & prof.
EXTREMELY bad professor. All he will do the whole semester is ramble non-stop, barely even stopping to ask the class engaging questions. He does not care about students retaining information at all. Doesnt update grades either
For the sake of your sanity, don't take any class that this professor teaches. His course is listed on Canvas, however, he is very old-fashioned and does not upload anything. No grades, no assignments, no instructions, no due dates, nothing. He does provide a schedule to use (paper) but it doesn't help.
Easy class, but the prof is very disorganized and lazy. Only grades in the class are online, out of class tests and 3 group projects. You are stuck with your group for the whole semester, so choose wisely. Whenever you have a question about a project, etc., he will tell you to ask the TA team instead of him.
Professor Rutledge has to be one of the most boring professors ever. Popular Culture sounded like a fun class and has the potential to be, however with Rutledge teaching it will drag. You will have 3 group projects one being a group paper. You have test online and those are the only grades that you will see. I don't recommend this class at all.
Horrible. I took him about 3 years ago. He had a really offensive slide titled Blacks in America with horirble stereotypes. I was so uncomfortable.
Very heavy on lectures, groups for projects and "attendance", and test online outside of class
I applaud you if you are able to pass this class. I have a disability and Rutledge refuses to follow the rules, even though it is mandatory.
Biggest complaint is that he would interject almost every lecture with his own personal opinions and then teach as if they are fact. Every lecture is just him reading off a power point with no class interaction. Only 3 exams and two group projects and they are all weighted the same. Very interesting material, but not that great of a prof.
The tests are online but not all answers are in his notes, you need the book and thorough notes.
This is an unfortunate situation. The material is very interesting and if you actually learn it, you would have a great basic but broad understanding of sociology. However, he just stands up there and reads the powerpoint and connects random examples to it. Very monotone. The set up could be more engaging. He didn't even tell us what to study.
This professor was the worst. He is so monotone. I had to work really hard in his class, reading the textbook. He also liked to push his own political agenda. Will not take him as a professor again.
This is the most boring class I've taken. Rutledge just talks THE ENTIRE TIME and ties the PowerPoint into pointless examples that make no sense. Tests are online and you can pull up the PowerPoints so it's easy to make an A. He actually cares about sociology a lot, it's just not engaging and he's really monotone. TA team does everything for him.
He likes to go off about random topics that have nothing to do with the presentation. Very boring. Teacher assistants seem useless.
I'm not sure why he has such bad ratings, because hes a nice professor and the tests are easy. His lectures can be kind of boring if sociology isn't your thing. The TA is useless though he doesn't grade by the rubric.
I think Professor Rutledge is a nice person, but his lectures are extremely monotonous, and I often found I did not get much out of them. Grade is dependent on three exams and two group projects. He just wasn't that effective for me. I would not suggest if you do not like group projects or straight lectures.
Phil Rutledge comes to class and spews his option for the entire 75 minute class. Although I agree with him on most issues he is extremely biased and repetitive. You are allowed 5 absences and on the 6th one you lose 10% off your final grade which I think is fair. All the tests are easy and online. Not a single person listens to the lectures.
He is so ridiculously boring. He drones on and on. All the tests are online at home though.
This class was easy, but not fun. It was boring and I often didnt want to go but he takes attendance almost every class and it counts. Reading textbook helps for test but is not required for any assignments. His TA does a lot of the work.
Spoke about his opinions for 1.5 hours non stop. We had 4 assignments. The paper,40% of grade, had a vague/unclear rubric. Every class his expectations of the paper changed. He never posted grades to canvas. The only grades i ever got back were 3 via email of which were 80,87 and 90. Never got my grades back and I ended with a C somehow. Worst prof
The class always has an hour minimum lecture and he is super monotone and boring. Super difficult to stay focused on him. Final grade consists of 4 tests and 2 group projects. However all the tests are take home tests and the powerpoints are up on canvas.
As someone on the TA team for this class, I heavily do not recommend it. Besides his boring demeanor for an interesting subject, he is EXTREMELY vague and unclear with directions. The subject material is not hard, however, the way he formats it is atrocious. It's like everything he says or produces comes out in essay format when it could be simple.
Worst professor I have ever had at UNCC. I am normally a straight A student but this class ended that streak. Do not take a course with this professor if you want to keep your sanity. He is so boring and never stops talking. He lets students grade the group projects, his test averages were all failing, unorganized, horrible assignments.
Do not. I repeat do not join the TA team for this class. I thought it would be a great idea and would save me a bit of time because you dont have to do the group projects, but it caused me more stress than just doing the projects did. Lectures were long, and he went off topic many times. Questionable comments and actions on occasion.
This class is very test heavy. You only have four test grades and one semester paper. Lectures every class and very boring. The test questions are general questions of the topics on the lectures, comparisons, along with question based on his personal opinion on historical events. I would suggest doing the extra credit, helps a lot. Not a hard class
Class consisted of very long, usually boring lectures. Overall nice professor, but heavily relies of lectures. Powerpoints online but they are better explained in person. 2 group projects. Tests are online. Decent study guides provided by TA.
This class will absolutely put you right to sleep, but if you can manage to stay awake and take notes on a google doc, you've basically passed the class. Exams were open note so if you know how to use ctrl+f you made an A. Group projects were okay but our TA graded like his life depended on taking points off, - points for color choice on a PP....
I took this as a fully online class, there was no weekly homework or zoom calls, but every week or two he would assign a chapter reading from the textbook. TAKE NOTES & READ THE TEXTBOOK. There are only 5 grades in the grade book - 4 exams and a final paper. If you do not take notes and stay up to date on the textbook you will not pass this class.
Took fully online & asynchronous, Prof is a really nice and understanding man, but the course material is hard to grasp. There are only four tests and a group paper that make up the entire semester grade, and the tests frequently have questions that arent covered at all. Even with open notes, powerpoints, and study guides, I struggled. No lectures.
the material for this class is very hard to grasp. The class is made up of 5 discussion, 2 papers and 2 tests. If you do bad on on test its really hard to bounce back. He replies to emails really late and seems to forget sometimes. Grades very slow as well. However he is understanding when it comes to giving extra credit. Dont recommend
His lectures are boring, however, if you pay attention during them, and at least skim the assigned reading, you will get an A or a B. Nobody shows up to the class because attendance is not mandatory, but I recommend going. There is one paper for the semester, I got an 88 on it, and it wasn't too difficult.
He seems nice but his lectures are pretty boring. His class is made up of 4 tests and one extra credit paper. So if you don't do well on a test, it brings your grade down a lot. No homework
This professor was okay. There isn't much class interaction. The only assignments are four tests. No exam. The only bad thing about not having a large workload is if you do badly on a test, your grade plummets. There are a couple of extra credit opportunities. He's very lenient. No required attendance.
Knows his stuff but lectures for a long time in very monotone voice. He posts his PowerPoints online so you don't necessarily have to go to class. You're only graded on 4 tests the entire semester but they're all online. His TA's do most of his work for him. Says the textbook is required but I never used it. Good teacher, just boring at times.
He goes over the slides in GREAT detail, so be ready to listen. He's really interested in what he is teaching, which I believe makes him a better educator. The only grades that go into the book are the 4 tests that we have, so make sure that you study and you'll pass
I took an online class and he posted everything at the beginning of the semester so you could work ahead. He posts PowerPoints that are extremely long and text heavy. But if you read those and do the assigned readings, it is a fairly easy A.
His LBST class consists of 5 discussion posts, 3 tests, a semester paper, and an extra credit paper. Dr. Rutledge is a tough grader on the discussion posts and can be bias when it comes to the opinionated discussions. He doesnt require attendance. Also, definitely do the extra credit paper, it can help your grade.
Rutledge is a nice man who reads strictly from his power points. There is so much information. His tests are online with no lockdown browser, but don't let it fool you, they are hard. My course only had 4 test grades. There was extra credit at the end of the course.
I would not take this class again. His lectures were the most boring thing to sit through and he made us all buy the textbook to not use it. Tests are online and open note but those are the only grades in the grade book. He does random discussion boards that he says are required but they don't even count towards your grade.
Told us on the first day that attendance wasn't mandatory due to covid. May seem like an easy class but no. Your grade consists of 4 tests. That's all that's in the grade book. Something I will say would be to DO THE EXTRA CREDIT PAPER! He allowed me to submit two papers and it improved my grade tremendously.
An incredibly tough grader for an lbst class. Very specific with what hes looking for, and if you interpret something differently youre wrong
You get 4 grades for the class... The 4 tests. Most boring lectures you will ever sit through. Long readings each week. Just don't do it.
He knew what he was talking about and was really passionate about sociology. There are only4 main grades, which are test, so you have to do good on the test to pass the class. He does offer a lot of extra credit to bring up your grade. It's just your responsibility to do it.Very easy class, if you study and take the time to do the canvas discussion
Wouldn't take this professor again. Only 4 exams which were hard. He is very lecture heavy so attendance wasn't required.
