Hard class, but Phil made it easy and found ways for it to apply to students' lives.
Total fruitcake!
Phil is a great teacher. He makes class interesting and fun. The Big Bend trip he does is also a lot of fun, and very interesting!
Awesome teacher! I love this man, he's so cool and laid back. You probably won't learn anything because all he does is talk about other things besides biology, but that's what makes it easy. Tests are very easy (only 5 questions) and tons of extra credits (to replace lab grades).

Not helpful with the internet process of taking this class. Lost some of my grades.
Shelp's biggest problem is proof-reading. Tests contained info that wasn't yet covered, and sometimes the multiple choice questions had more than one correct possible answer but you could only pick one.
I hope that we have more teachers like him that like what they teach. It comes from his heart!! Horray for Phil Shelp!!!!
Shelp is easy, but you don't learn anything and he isn't very helpful because he usually doesn't know what he is talking about. You have to write a lot, but I don't think he ever looks a them. Easy A, just extremely boring!!
journal keeping is to much.
He was great..really helps when needed. He is extremely understanding and the class was easy.Yeah most will complain about the journal, but only five question tests. He is not the best with keeping up with grading but if you still have it he will give you your points. He tries to make Biology interesting and he will succeed if you give him the chance.
I ended up working for Phil with his Field Biology classes for 7 years.... Loved him ! great man, loves his work and fun.
He was one of the worst teachers..yes the class was easy but he did not know what he was talking about. He was very unorganized and he even lost a few students test grades. The journal was a waste of time because he doesnt even read it.I copied straight out of my book into my journal and made a perfect score. It was still an easy A. He is worthless
I took online Biol 1408. pretty easy. online Lab, Lab quiz weekly and like only 4 tests. I would recommend.
I took BIO I & II online. The class were well laid out & Mr. Shelp is very available, very helpful & very willing to help. This instructor is very easy going, you learn so much from the classes and he is on top of grades and communications. MR. SHELP'S COURSE IS THE REAL DEAL !!! Accept no substitutions!
I took both 1408 and 1409 online and loved them! Mr. Shelp is helpful and concerned about the success of his students. The comment about reading posts is bogus - the point of a discussion board is student interaction and you get a participation grade. If he/she copied directly out of the book that is plagarism and clearly not of good character.
After carefully reading professor reviews I chose this teacher. To my horror I was faced with an enormous amount of work that is crazy if you are trying to attempt with a full time job and family. I was ecstatic to finish the class and pass with a satisfactory B but OMG it was awful!!! He was very prompt with grades and responding to emails.
best biol teacher...i took the class online and don't recommend taking a class online but he was very helpful and got back to you very fast if you needed help. I would def take his class again but next time on campus because i struggle through this class and i took it over the summer so double hard.
OMG! SO freaking hard!!! This is a NON biology major, and his class does not reflect this. My GPA is 3.60 and I was going to fail this class if I did not withdraw. I did the work and studied, but his tests are OUTRAGEOUSLY hard! I will not EVER take another class with him!
This class requires far too much work for it being a class for non-science majors. Weekly lab reports that are 8-10 pages long, just to get a password to take a 10 question quiz. 6 tests (50 questions), 4 discussion boards, 2 practicals and a midterm and final, plus "special events". i would recommend taking something other than Biology.
The labs are done online as well, and it's hard to figure out what you are looking at. There isn't an option to zoom in on the photos and it's difficult to ask for clarification because the whole point of the lab is to make sure you have an understanding of the material. If you are taking this class, don't take it online.
Took the class online. I agree with everyone else, it is a LOT of work and it is hard. LOT of information to absorb in a short time. But remember it is a 4-credit course. The class is reasonable and Mr. Shelp is very helpful and friendly. If you are a no-nonsense student, then take the class, but if you are looking for an easy way out, don't.
Took this class during Summer I and the class was very dificult.
I took this class online, and had a 4.0...until now. This will be the class that ruins that for me. Incredibly difficult. Tests are confusing, and often I found material on the tests that was not covered in labs or in the reading. I think now taht I should have taken it at school, and not online. Hope I can pass the final!
Online Lab Materials were hard to understand. The tests hardly ever related to the material in the textbook. The tests had material that was never covered in the book or the labs. Would highly recommend you not take this class online. The instructor was not very helpful and always forgot to tell the testing center that you were allowed paper.
Prof. does not respond to emails, he will not answer your question, and if you're working full time this will be a difficult class, as it is a 4 credit class in 4 weeks. GOOD LUCK! you're going to need patience and some luck to get through this. my previous GPA 3.6, now I'll be lucky to even pass this class, wow FML
Terrible class 10 questions in 10 seconds should say enough. You can't sell back expensive books. Don't take this class you will regret it. Do not waste your money! If you like a challenging class that's rewarding this is not the one to take.AVOID THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE A HIGH GPA. :( SERIOUSLY!
Worst minimester class I have ever taken. Its supposed to be an entry level class, but the expectation seems way beyond.
I didn't have a problem with the material but he was incredibly untimely with his e-mails. I submitted three assignments at the same time and he only returned the passwords for two of them. And 24 hours later I still haven't gotten the third.
WARNING: This class is awful. It is not extemely difficult to keep up with. The online labs are totally confusing. Your GPA is sure to take a fall. The test cover material that was not covered in the reading. The lab quiz questions are tricky and confusing. The professor is very rude and never directly answers questions. You have been WARNED!!!
I thought the professor made expectations clear- the problem is the expectations are unreasonable. There is way to much information to learn in 4 weeks.
Took online. Lots of work but great teacher. Expectations are clear and he is leniant. Gives you a week at midterm and end of the semester to make up missed work. As long as you stay on top of the work I would recommend this class!
Professors expectations are clearly set out in the syllabus... they are just unrealistic expectations. Be sure you have the time to devote to this class, because it is not a cake walk. You earn your grade, and the non-science major thing in the title is a joke. This class is NOT an easy one.
This is the worst professor I've had in college. He is rude and disorganized. Most of the time he talks about controversial topics regarding politics and religion. I had to teach myself biology this semester because what little he got around to teaching was vague. You'll get an A in his personal life, but will leave knowing nothing about biology.
Professor's expectations are clear- and he is also very helpful. As long as you do your work and stay on top of everything, you will pass. (Took a 4 week online course)If I had to take another, I would take one of his classes. :)
This guy is the worst professor I have ever had. We had a test over 3 chapters, to which we only covered 1/2 of the first chapter in class. I have had to teach myself Biology this semester. He spends a great deal of time going over the chapters covered on the PREVIOUS test, and discussing how religion, politics, and biology are different.
Very nice professor but he will make you think about the material. Lots of points for assignments make a good grade possible. Course materials need to be updated as they have discrepancies and questions are not complete or clear in some cases.
Mind you, I took the non major biology. There are 6 tests. 50 Questions each. Unbelievably difficult. You need to memorize the book verbatim if you want to pass. You also have to buy HIS lab book for around $100. This class is more for biology major students. AVOID if you can.
Very difficult teacher. Should not give online classes at all. Hate his way of teaching nline. No sensitivity!
Teacher is very quiet and unclear in his lecture. I could drink a huge cup of expresso and I STILL feel like passing out once he starts speaking. He gets off topic, even if you were to listen.I made the mistake of not looking his name up on this site before, and am struggling w/ an already high GPA to maintain. He can be rude if you don't understand
I loved this class. It wasn't exactly easy but I enjoyed the format of the class. You pretty much have a lab report to complete alongside an online lab and reading followed up by a test every week. As long as you manage your time, you'll be okay. Responds timely to students.
One of the worst classes! The format makes you think it would be pretty simple but he was so rude. He never answered a single one of my questions and took forever to respond to emails. Do not take him.
This guy is very unprepared and unprofessional. I have had multiple issues with the formats for test and lab praticals not being set up correctly. A couple of examples are the timer was set for 10 minutes on a 55 minute test and he closed lab quizzes before the due dates. He is also unclear in directions he gives. By far the worse professor.
I took Professor Shelp online for Bio 2, while taking Bio 1 in the classroom. I would just google the question for most tests and still made a B! If I had put more time aside for the class, I could have easily made an A.
Pretty rough around the edges but the overall experience was manageable.
In the beginning of the course Phil told us that we were all his family and he treated everyone who respected him with respect in return. He always made class welcoming, enjoyable and his great positive outlook on life rubbed off on everybody in a great way. He makes Biology a wonderful learning experience. Great Professor, and a great person.
Phil is a nice enough guy but he seems like he has really checked out at this point. He always forgets to open quizzes, making it difficult to get all your assignments in. The lectures are mind numbingly boring, and he is terrible at explaining any of the concepts. We were taught half of the class by youtube videos.
Took him for a MAY MESTER ONLINE. Non science major's bio. 3 week long course, expected hell. BUNCH of work, but was really easy! Good professor, very fair and replied to emails pretty quick!
I took this course online and lots of homework especially with labs. The labs are doable. The tests does not have much to do with the textbook but I still suggest reading. Also, do the extra credit as it does help your grade. The final is comprehensive but easy.
I just finished Mr. Shelps online Bio class and I was very happy with the class. The only downside really is that there is quite a bit of homework, mostly in online labs, but it's pretty doable and you learn a considerable amount from them. He gives great feed back when you are confused about a concept and is understanding of outside commitments.
Biology is one of my harder subjects, and I was very nervous to take it online. Mr. Shelp was very helpful and clear about what assignments were due and when. He gave extra credit, which I needed, and additional points for turning everything in on time. He was always accessible through email, and responded very quickly.
He was very helpful!
Online course. Labs, quizzes and tests weekly. Also short essays and discussions. Assignments are timed- tough look up every question in book. Familiarize yourself w/ the chapter. Great professor, responds quickly to email! Very nice and accommodating if you have an emergency but overall strict with deadlines in normal circumstances.
Mr. Shelp is a very nice professor. If you simply go to class, pay attention, participate, and ask questions, you will pass. You go over the actual exam a couple days before so you literally have all the answers. It is on you if you don't pass, just pay attention. He's caring and understands actual real life situations happen and gives you make ups
Took his class over winter break, really intense but totally doable! you have a lesson do almost everyday, quizzes aren't too bad but they are timed which isn't the most ideal but again, totally doable. He responds fairly quick, guidelines are very clear, he gives you online access to the book which is so great!
Phil Shelp is the kind of teacher who is willing to go out of his way to help you along in the course. Very fast responses when emailing. Very polite.
Literally don't read anything just take the quizzes and you'll be fine. Learn and pass in the 10min you're timed for the quizzes. You'll pass after you do the labs.
Very good prof to take during the summer for online courses! The course load and grading is fair. Dr. Shelp is also very responsive to emails. As long as you make time for the class and put forth the effort, there isn't any reason for you to not make an A in his class.
All you have to do is click through each lab, fill in a lab report, then take a short quiz. Each lab goes along with a lecture that there is a quiz over as well. VERY easy class, worth it to transfer credits easily. Not much effort is required.
Absolutely amazing!!! You will not regret His grading criteria is clear and the extra credit will give you the opportunity of get an easy A as long you do your part. His class is set up in a way that you will learn a lot in a easy way. So far the best online teacher I had have, how I wish to have him in all my classes lol. Highly recommended.
When I emailed him he would get back with me asap and he helped me achieve my goal in this class.
BIOL 1408 is so easy with Dr. Shelp. The work is really simple and self-explanatory.
He provided all of the materials needed for the course, very organized, and very helpful even though it was online!
I was very nervous to take biology online. However, Shelp made the class easy to navigate and it was an overall great experience. Quizzes and Tests are timed but there is plenty of time to get the work done. He also gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. I liked this class so much that I have decided to take bio 1409 as my second science! A+++
Professor Shelp is very straight forward. The course calendar lets you know exactly what you need to do. I enjoyed it! Taking him again in the fall for Biol 1409. Don't let the assignments scare you. The labs and tests are doable - just focus.
Class was very clear on what needed to be turned in and by when. I took it during the summer, so there were a lot of assignments, but all easily doable. You get two tries to take quizzes and exams with the highest grade counted so that helps to take the pressure off too. Would definitely take another class by Prof. Shelp again.
Best Professor ever! He is the best with a whole lot of knowledge to offer! Amazing teacher!
Very detailed schedule for class to following along and complete assignments. I purchased the book, but it is offered online. Many learning options including videos and Power Point presentations. Professor is accommodating if an assignment is late or accidentally missed. Very responsive and provides feedback! Would certainly take again!
I have not had Science in over 30 years and was a bit nervous taking it online. I found the class easy to follow and keep up with the work in the 16 week course. The timed quizzes and the timed comprehensive final were stressful to me but I did ok with them. The online labs were interesting and easy to understand.
One of the best online classes I've taken. Very easy format to follow. Very self driven, you need to stay on top of things yourself. I took this class within a 5 week semester so there was a lot to get done but it was not overbearing. Great communication with professor, responds to emails quickly and very understanding.
Phil is very responsive to emails. Clear grading criteria and extra credit is offered for completing the orientation quiz and turning in all assignments on time. All quizzes/tests/exams are completed online. The lab is fully online with a lab report turned in on blackboard. 5 week course completed in 3 weeks. I highly recommend it.
Took this course in 5 week flex term format. Yes, you have to work, but course content well organized and manageable. Multiple opportunities to correct your work, retake quizzes for higher grade, and offers bonus work. Took this course while taking 2 language classes and Philosophy; also working full-time. If youre organized you will do well.
I only took this course because I needed 2 science classes for my degree. Don't put assignments off until the last minute. And don't blame the professor for the grade you earn. His website clearly will guide you to the answers. I only passed by a few points, but looking back on the flex-course, I should have planned better. Take this class.
Professor Shelp is the BEST!! If you are up for the challenge, you can do it. It's alot of work but everything is available online. The lab reports are long but you have to submit them 24 hours in advance to get access to the quiz. * 4 discussion boards * 12 lab reports & quizzes * 12 lecture quizzes * 2 lab practical exams * final exam
This is the best biology course I've ever taken. All the work is posted early so you can complete it before the course even starts. There are 2 chances to take quizzes/exams and your highest attempt is taken. Everything is well organized and easy to navigate. Phil is very responsive to emails, a fair grader, and grades quickly. I highly recommend!
Professor Shelp is a gem, he is so caring!!!!. so there are labs required, need to do those before accessing the quiz. lecture is very organized and easy to navigate, I took him for both my biology class!!! take him, you wont regret it!!!!!
Very easy class if you do all of the work and submit assignments on time. For the online summer course there were 3-4 labs due a week which are pretty much fill in the blank, a lab quiz and lecture quiz to go along with each lab but you are given two attempts, 2 lab practicals, 2 special events, extra credit, and a final.
Took him for summer. It was a lot of work crammed into a month but it was doable. Try working ahead so you don't forget to turn something in. Labs are super easy. Check your due dates cause once the due date is past you cannot make up that work. Taking him again in BIOL 1409 hopefully it goes as smoothly as 1408.
Post-bacc here. Class was straight forward, and easy if you do the work. It can be time-consuming so work ahead. Do not procrastinate in this class. Prof gives good feedback, e-mails back promptly, and gives access to free textbook and lab manual! Exams are based off of quizzes, and the lecture/lab goes together - no tricks. Prof Shelp is AMAZING!
My main advice would be to work ahead! Straight forward class. Do not miss deadlines. It's tough but doable if you put in the time.
Professor Shelp is firm in his requirements for the class, however was always willing to hear what I needed and then made a decision afterward that was fair. He encouraged me to remain in the course when I got off to a rough start in BIOL 1408, which is why I chose his class for BIOL 1409.
Professor Shelp is an awesome professor, I like professor Shelp Philosophy in teaching, prof. Shelp wants us to learn and understand Biology concepts more than anything else and this is a successful process in teaching (The labs were amazing, labs key answer practice quizzes, and study reviews. Professor Shelp is absolutely a great professoer.
Best professor ever. I took online and everything was well laid out and easy! Take him. Give him a raise!!
I do not major in Science, but this professor changed my mind in his Biology class. Even thought it was an online course, it was interesting for a non-science major like me. He is such an understanding, fast-responding and nice professor. Plus, I've got easy A just by following exactly what he says and everything is on the syllabus.
Professor Shelp provides an interesting and informative class. He is graceful, understanding, and a great communicator as he frequently posts announcements and responds to emails in a timely manner. Course workload is reasonable and do-able, but as with anything requires effort. Strongly recommend Professor Shelp for your Biology needs.
Phil was an online teacher for me. He provided a lot of helpful material in order to be successful in the class. He is very generous and understanding. I really liked how organized the class was by him. Once a week, you would complete a lecture quiz and lab quiz both 10 questions. Great guy and work load is not that much.
He makes it clear what is due and when it's due. I was not a fan of the labs since they require most of your time and you don't get a grade for it. The only grade that counts for it is what you make on the lab quiz. You have to work hard in this class for an A, especially during summer months. He provides you with the textbook PDF for free.
I dropped out of the summer on-line class. DO NOT TAKE the on-line class at DCCCD unless you already know biology. The video labs are crappy (hard to see). The on-line book (free off some website) is extremely scientific and should not be the required textbook for the class. Especially for non-science majors.
Mr Shelp is a great teacher! I took him a few years ago and now my daughter is taking him. He cares about his students and is always willing to help- always!
Prof. Shelp was a nice enough guy but no extra mile is run for his students. Locks quizzes and some tests, requires completion of labs before passwords are provided, this led to a mishap not on my part but the system. Excessive amt of reading/studying required to achieve an A. Too in depth for a non-science major class/flex semester class.
Honesty it was a pretty easy class. Professor Shelp worked with Professor Birmingham and made the class pretty simple.
