you will be absolutely horrified on the first day of his class, becuase his voice is so monotone. However, i recommed sticking it out, he's actually a good teacher and a great guy
Very good teacher. Makes you think and tells you what will be on the exams.
Great Prof, he makes you think out of the box, makes you see alot of thing usally you never see in a case. Great guy, Great Prof, Has great past experince from banking in Canada
Cool guy great teacher, makes you think as well as you will learn alot about the real world.Brings an international perspective, ONE GREAT CANADIAN Teacher, has alot of experince in the real world
Very good teacher. Relates current events to class. Fair grader. Would def take again.

this is the only finance class that i learnt something in... amazing teacher...makes u think about the world and things going on in the,,,if u wana learn and love finance then take him
One of Bentley's best professors. He knows everything there is to know about finance and does a good job stimulating student interest in the subject matter. Class time is used well and he keeps it humorous. On top of that he wants his students to do well and will give you chances to earn the grade you think you deserve. Highly recommended.
Great teacher/Great Class. Comes from an experienced banking background so he knows every facit of the investing world. Tests are easy because he sends you a "practice exam" which almost mirrors the real test exactly sans some changed numbers. I would recommend him and would take him again. Moderate effort should yeild a 3.3+
I am a graduating senior and Uhlmann is easily the best finance teacher at Bentley...not the easiest (Pierce or Daroff) but definitely the best. He just knows so much and genuinely cares about you and how you do. Hes also not overly difficult as far as FI professors go. Take him.
This guy knows banking and international markets really well. Has worked just about everywhere in the world in some capacity. Exams were extremely tough...did give a lot of practice questions to make studying easier. Learned a lot in the course. Book was barely used. Avoid taking another difficult course with this one in the same semester.
Uhlmann is the best professor I have ever had in my entire life for any subject. If you don't have a sincere interest in finance, don't take FI392. If you do have the interest, you must take this. He is experienced and really knows his stuff. I have learned more in this class than I have in all of my other finance electives combined. Great guy too.
By far the best finance teacher at Bentley. Be prepared every class and he will make you think outside the box, this is what international and project finance really is. He's worked in almost every facet in project finance deals and can relate to every topic discussed in class. Must take!
Best professor at Bentley by far, at least in the finance department. Gives you a clear understanding of international finance matters,as well as transactions involving foreign currencies. Very helpful, always available for office hours. Very interesting cases. Learnt a lot and had a lot of fun in class. Just take him you won't regret it!
Excellent professor. Extensive use of real-world examples make subject more interesting and relevant.
Took this class as a winter intensive over 5 days.i learnt about as much if not more than a regular semester course. He was fair, built our interest with humor and most importantly knew what he was talking about..my interest in project finance increased 90% after the 5 days and i can even do financial modelling for a company.highly recommended!

He admittedly has a lot of real-world experience, but he doesnt explain concepts to us very well. His excuse for his vagueness is he wants us to think critically and come up with our own answers. I try to like him but he is pompous and arrogant. Expect to invest tons of time in his class with very low returns..
Professor Uhlmann has been the best professor in my career as a Bentley student. His real world experience has helped me learn what it takes in the real world. Although sometimes ambiguous, you are always given enough tools to get stuff done. If you do your work, you get rewarded.
Pretty good intl finance professor. Had his own way of doing things. Don't know if he never really liked me or if he was just in a hurry, but always seemed he was in a rush to go somewhere. Had to work my a$$ off for a 3.3.
Hard class but def the best teacher for it. Take him and you won't regret it. Lots of real world experience.
One of the best finance professors you can have at Bentley. For sure one of my favorites and is always willing to help you
he has a lot of experiences BUT he never explains any concept, such a bad professor and all he does in class is tell us about his experience which is good but never explain any concepts or materials. plus he brags about his vacation destinations which all i've already been to.
Great professor, did a great job of setting aside time to help and is good in class. you have to work hard, but if you put in the effort, you will end up with a deserved grade.
One of the most random classes at Bentley: there is no structure and no textbook usage. However, Uhlmann is a genius and youll learn a lot about the world of banking. He's also a complete baller - strongly recommend.
Absolutely one of the best finance professors i have ever had at Bentley. Genius and humble. Real world experience is extensive and he helps you throughout whatever difficulty you have. He is tough but the class is worth it. If you actually want some real life lessons and concepts you can apply to your future he is a must take.
I am a graduating senior and Uhlmann is easily the best finance teacher at Bentley...not the easiest, but definitely the best. He just knows so much and genuinely cares about you and how you do. He's a must take if you are remotely interested in finance. He is amazing. Listen to him, take it in. He is remarkably intelligent.
Remarkable character with lots of wisdom and knowledge. However, Uhlmann is not really the man when it comes to teaching finance in a class room;he fails to explains concepts and connections. Sometimes his understanding of the world differs from your common sense - good, but not outstanding and most definitely not someone you should take at all cost
This professor was by far one of the best during my Bentley career. He has lots of real world experience which he shares with the class. Make sure you stay up to day with banking deals and news, this will get you extra point on final grading
This is the best class and the best professor I've ever had in my Bentley life! So lucky that I took the advice from him and went for the class. He really leads you to learn how to think independently and make decision. His experience and knowledge help a lot when you try to think into details. The class is not that easy at first, but worthwhile!
This is the best, yet most difficult class I have ever taken at Bentley. Professor Uhlmann is clear and fair but really demanding. If you take the class, do it because you want to learn, you most give the class a lot of time.
You know those people that know something so well that their explanation of it sounds like its in another language - well he's kinda like that. Smart man. Brought a lot of real world examples to class but did not explain too well. Had to read the textbook over and over to get what was really going on. If you don't come to class, you won't pass.
Pretty interesting class, no exams and instead 3 case studies (one you present) and a midterm and final case as well.
Probably the best finance professor at this school. Guy has been in the industry all his life and uses real life examples. Class is extremely interesting and flies by. Very serious but hysterical guy. Tests are just like the practice tests he gives you.
Uhlmann is one of the best finance profs at Bentley. Come into class with some financial knowledge and don't live under a rock and you should do well. Show so initiative and actually go to class and work hard on assignments and study for exams. Most of the material comes from his lectures rather than the book. Little to no homework assignments.
He is brilliant. Hands down the most amazing professor I have ever taken at Bentley. You will learn a lot from him. Yes you will have to work hard but it will pay off. Uhlmann really is the epitome of how all professors should be.
Incredible professor and some of the stories he shares are hilarious. Tests are straightforward as long as you show up to class you shouldn't get less than a 3.0
Finance Majors, If you should so happen to have the opportunity to take Phil, I highly recommend it. As a graduating senior, his FI 352 class was the best class I have taken at Bentley. Talk to him and get to know him. He is very nice and probably the smartest and most business savvy professor at Bentley. You will not regret taking him.
Professor Uhlmann definitely knows his stuff, but asks a lot of questions. Class is difficult and you should definitely not miss any classes if you want to do well on the exams. He's always willing to help and gives great for advice on anything. Great finance professor and I would definitely take him again.
Uhlmann's a tricky professor. He asks really difficult questions in class and it seems like he thinks his students are way smarter than they are. Many times his questions are met with blank stares and silence. HOWEVER his tests/projects aren't too difficult, and he really is a good guy. +1 he has a dog that sometimes comes to class
I took him for a one week intensive and he is a great guy, you get out of this class what you put in. Lectures can be boring but his assignments are not too bad. He really cares about the students, the intensive is not too bad, especially since the final is due on the last day of class. All group projects but an individual final, not bad got a 3.3
Prof Phil is a wonderfully intelligent teacher and tries hard to make things fun and interesting. He gives practical tips on job hunts and puts in a good amount of office hrs. Must attend and pay attention in class to succeed.100
Would not recommend. All he talks about is current events and you end up teaching yourself all of the important material for the projects and homeworks. He cold calls on people in class and expects us to come up with ridiculous answers that none of us could've possibly known. The words he chooses make it hard to follow his lectures.
He's a brilliant professor, he is one of the most knowledgeable professor's I've ever had at Bentley. His class is tough don't get me wrong, but you will learn so much in this class. He's always available for office hours and questions. This class will be tough regardless the professor so take Uhlmann it'll be worth your time
He is a very hard professor, but you will learn a lot. He is very smart, and teaches very useful information during his lectures. However, what people should know is that he expects you to fill in the blanks outside of class. The book actually helps with this(Use it!) , and do not take him if you just want an easy A. Take him if you want to learn
Professor Uhlmann is one of the smarter guys at Bentley, and despite what others say, his lectures are good. If you enjoy learning and put work in for the projects and tests, you will take a lot away from this course. Not a lot of homework, but a fair amount of time is necessary to complete projects outside of class. Highly recommend.
Uhlmann's the best professor I've taken at Bentley by a long shot. Super knowledgable, makes the lectures extremely interesting. Tests are tough, but you will learn so much. Would definitely recommend taking him if you have the chance, you will not regret it.
I graduated in 2013 and only came across this because my cousin is currently a Sr. and asked me about professor Uhlmann. He was one of the top three professors I had in my 4 years (the other 2 being Gregory for finance and Snyder for Economics). I would absolutely recommend his class if you actually want to learn and earn your grade.
Took him for this class and his FI787 summer intensive class. Both are pretty much the same, expect with different cases. Phil did a great job relating the content of the classes (the cases), into understandable pieces of material. He actually connected the classes to the real world. He's a very respectable guy and truly cares about his students.
Professor Uhlmann is the best professor at Bentley. He is totally invested in you and your success, so put your time in. He is intelligent, realistic and challenging. Speak up with your thoughts and ideas. He's impeccably devoted office hour time, and makes himself available for each and every student. I consider myself lucky to have known him.
If you want to get cold called on, take Uhlman. Treat homework like projects and start early.
Took for 1-week intensive. Really liked the guy. My one qualm is that he didn't do enough practice problems for the exam and focused on anecdotes about his personal life. Yet the exam wound up being much easier than expected so I guess it evened out. Has a great dry sense of humor.
The man who teaches the real world stuff with his experience in the financial world. Treat his homework like projects, IT'S A LOT. Cheat sheet allowed for the exams. If you truly want to build a solid finance fundamentals, then take him and follow his instructions. You will not regret. If you just do not want to work for your grade, then skip him.
Professor Uhlmann knows a lot and is very respected. You have to put in a lot of work in the class. There is also a lot of group projects. He really wants you to learn. Class average is always a 3.0 so he curves every test.
Professor Uhlmann is a great guy and probably the smartest professor I have ever taken. He teaches a lot of real-world trade finance and makes you be aware of the market everyday. All his tests and projects are related to something you will do in the real word. Might have a lot of work from his class and exams might be difficult but worth it!
Uhlmann is Silicon Valley meets Wall Street. The guy lives in 2050. Knows exactly whats going to happen in the market weeks before it actually happens. He is too smart to be a teacher. It's hard for him to dumb stuff down so make sure you ask a lot of questions. Prob would have failed his class with a 20% if it wasn't for corona.
Phil Uhlmann is the Finance teacher most likely to develop the type of unique thinking that will get you a better job when you graduate.
Uhlmann is hard ball but a great! Hes the best. Just take
Prof Uhlmann is the goat, he's very and cares about his students. He tries his best to help them succeed with his own powerpoints, case studies, and anecdotes about his personal career path. None of his courses are easy, but they are must-takes and relevant for anyone going into finance. I learned so much from him and highly highly recommend.
Very polarizing and peculiar fellow. Tried to be helpful but frankly made me understand less every time he spoke. Gave us past exams to study which were similar. Rounds final grades so that the average is a B no matter what, I guess if everyone fails you're still fine then. His heart is in the right place but maybe his head is a little off.
I have taken Uhlman for FI 306, 351, 686, and 720. He is the best finance professor Bentley has to offer. You gotta work for your grade and his exams are challenging, but if you want to learn then he's your guy.
Best finance professor in Bentley!!!
Professor Uhlmann is without a doubt the smartest professor at Bentley. He is probably the most knowledgeable man I have ever come across. His depth of knowledge is incredible. You will learn so much while listening to his lectures. He will destroy any Harvard professor.
the best finance professor I have had at Bentley. I was hesitant to take him because I heard he cold calls a lot and I was worried about not knowing the answer but if you don't know he helps you work through it or you can pass. He genuinely cares about his students and always checks in with us to see how we are doing. 100% need to take him
Prof Uhlmann is a very smart and soft spoken man. You learn so much beyond simple investment strategies as he is always bringing in outside work and experiences. He is a must take in any course. Projects and exams are difficult but he works well with you to get ready. Even if you don't do well, he scales so everyone will get a B+ or A- as he says.
Dr Phil is a great Finance Professor, and you will learn a lot in his class. His lectures are very relevant, and asked us what had been going on that week (refreshing to cover the latest developments on topics). His class is very hard, but he is fair with expectations and grading (the hardest class that I've had at Bentley). Would recommend
One of the best teachers at Bentley. He knows a lot about the market and you will get that from him. Take him
Best finance professor at Bentley
Hands down the smartest and best professor I have had at Bentley so far. The guy has so many stories to tell about his past career, and connects all lessons to real world events. Super interesting guy, would definitely take a course of his again. Be sure to show up to class though - everything on exams he talks about during lecture.
If you want to learn, take Phil. If you want an A, go elsewhere. Easily one of the toughest professors to get an A in, however if you go to office hours and read the financial times before class, he'll like you because he knows you want it. Great guy, cares about students success, will tank your GPA if you have a 4.0.
Dr. Phil has to be the best finance professor here. If you show to his lectures and just soak it all in, you will learn so much. Cares deeply about his students, recognizes potential, and is more than happy to work with you. Impeccable availability in office hours. His class is extremely hard, but if you want to truly work and learn, must take.
The smartest man I've ever met in my life. His knowledge of business will crush any professor, with that being said his class and exams are absurd, but he does curve and care about his students. You will learn a LOT, but this will likely be the hardest class you take in college. This is what I imagine classes at MIT would be like.
Take him if you want to actually go into a finance profession, if you're taking the class for any other reason I would not recommend. I ended up doing well in the class but I went through so much unnecessary stress this semester trying to teach myself the content. Lectures and assignments are unorganized, rarely gives actual answers to questions.
Very knowledgeable guy who teaches you a lot. As long as you put in effort you will do fine. Amazing prof who knows and has seen a lot.
Professor Uhlman might be my favorite professor at Bentley. And definitely one of the smartest! He will teach you so much and help you to start thinking beyond the classroom like he does after years of working in finance in many different capacities. He is also very fair and cares about his students. I can't recommend taking his class enough!
BEST PROF EVER. Great mentor to have at this school. He is extremely knowledgeable, one of the smartest people I have ever met. The class is tough but if you pay attention and are willing to put in effort it will be rewarded. If you actually want to learn something take Phil!!
Listen, I get the reviews saying he is super smart & knowledgeable, he obviously knows his stuff, but he is really, really bad at conveying the course material. Like really. His slides are not clear & he will not thoroughly explain anything in class, so you have to put yourself through a lot of stress teaching yourself the content. Not worth it!
DP is the best finance prof at this school. If you show up and put in effort, you will learn soo much. He is very smart pretty funny. Exams do tend to be hard but he does curve, is very fair with grading, and always has time to answer emails and go over any questions during office hours. He really cares that you learn in class. Take him if you can!
Smart guy who knows his stuff. Not the best at actually teaching the information, but his lectures are entertaining. You definitely learn a lot from his class, accessible outside of class. His exams are fair very similar to the practice exams and homework class average for midterm was a 70, but he curves. Definetley would recommend taking him.
Nice guy but he's not great at actually conveying the course content in a way that's understandable. His teaching style is just telling stories and speaking in riddles. He cold calls and participation/attendance is a big part of your grade. Exams are tough but are based on exactly what he talks about during class rather than the book.
Not just an average finance professor. You will not be doing much learning from a textbook, but more on what he talks about in class/his stories. You have a midterm, final, and 3 group projects. The exams are hard, but he gives you old exams to study from, and it's based on those questions and what he talks about in class. Different teaching style.
Prof. Uhlmann is a smart, old guy with a ton of stories. He is extremely entertaining, but not the best professor. Spent far too much time carping about useless information that wasn't helpful / did not enhance any learning in the class. If you want to learn something, buy the textbook and read it on your own. Also extremely unorganized.
Would I like to sit down and have a beer with Phil Uhlman, yes. Would I want to have him again for 306... maybe. He is a very tough grader in terms of group projects. His tests are also very difficult and he teaches very little in class so get ready to read if you want to learn the information. However his class is extremely entertaining.
I have never posted a rating before because I never felt the need to, however Professor Uhlmann is self centered and tends to be rude to his students when they don't know something instead of actually teaching the coursework. He just cold calls the entire class and I recommend avoiding his classes all together.
Cold calls students but wants you to apply the stuff learned in class into real life. Extremely hard exams but his practice exams help a lot. Be sure to ask questions and participate. Touch up on the markets.
If you can't handle being cold called in a finance class by your junior or senior year then you shouldn't be a finance major. Uhlmann just wants to teach his students what the real world is going to be like. Take a class with Uhlmann if you take your degree seriously, but if you are at school to waste time then don't waste his either.
Sounds like he speak in riddles. Teaches useful things and the real life stuff. Not so clear guidelines and grading system. If you relax, trust the process, participate, engage in the learning, and use the sources (office hours + LEAF with a tutor that's taken him), you will be fine. Tests are brutal but group projects are okay.
In a class of his own. You'll learn a lot- adjusts his style for each student, teaches the real world stuff- high finance and beyond. He's challenging/unconventional, good for smart kids who work like he🏒🏒, brains alone won't do it. Take a class or 3 w/him-stick with it/trust the process, if you got it. Take initiative. Bentley rite of passage.
Take him if you actually want to succeed in finance. He prepares students for what life in this industry is like in the real world, so don't be scared of his cold calls. Phil is an extremely smart guy, exams are hard, but doable if you do the practice tests. Stay up to date on markets. Go to his office hours and get to know him
