Teaches from PowerPoint presentations. Slides are posted on the web. Tests and Quizes are from the slides. Show up and listen and you'll pass.
The teacher is very consistent and easy to understand. his powerpoints that he had in class were helpful. He explained how to do things well and taught so that you would understand it before you left class.
This teacher must be queer, he is a very nice guy, and will know if u ditch his class, his presentations are helpful tests and grading are fair
His Phil 170 class is sooo easy. Do your work and you'll be fine. His 100 class is also easy, but I really didn't pay attention. His powerpoint lecture notes were hepful, but hard to copy. Overall a great teacher.
He's an awesome techer I took him for both phil 100 and 170 and he is very consistant, helpful and just overall an A+ teacher. If you have to take philosophy I would suggest taking it with him. He is one of the best
The class is easy, but the guy is a weirdo! The book for the class was called "How to think about weird things!" Overall, you won't find an easier teacher cuz phil170 is a hard course in general.
Effectove teaching style, liked the class
he is very easy. the powerpoint notes is very good and it is available for students online. his test is very clear and straight forward (easy. he is one helpful professor and the homework is always helpful
I would have to say that he is one of the best teachers I have taken so far. He really cares about his students and wants everone to pass therefor everything is reasonable. You do most of the learning in class and hw takes only a few mins.Tests are staight forward. highly recommended!
he's a really chill professor and very understanding. the class is really easy. just do your hw and show up to class for the attendance points, and you'll be fine.
He truly CARES for his students and treats his students like equals. Easy to understand while being understanding. Great class! recommended!
he made the subject interesting, but his grading is unclear, and he couldn't explain it well when i asked.
His class was actually pretty interesting. Lots of homework, but doesn't take much time to do. Tests weren't so bad either. He makes philosophy exciting, or at least tries to.
huffaker is super cool. just do the homework and go to class and get an A or B EASILY.
Great professor. He put his power point lecture online so if you missed class you could still take notes on your own.
Professor Huffaker is a really good teacher. I highly recommend him. He gives homework, but only checks to see if you at least tried, and goes over it daily. His tests aren't very difficult if you pay attention, and he gives two like one page small papers, no big deal. Really nice guy too.
Huffaker is one of the best teachers in the Philosophy Dept. He ACTUALLY teaches whereas some PhDs do not even know how. Always helpful and clear. Even if it the most ridiculous question, Phildon will go over it until you understand. Fair grader, not to much reading, and a overall great person!
Very cool professor! Down to earth and very easy to understand. Makes sure that the student understands the material and will not move on until the student understands! Take notes it is very important! Attend class and pay attention.
Very helpful and truly wants his students to understand his lessons. Weekly homework. Tests were a bit difficult (for me), just make sure you really understand the concepts and memorize the ones you need to know. Classes were boring but it's hard to make a Phil Critical Thinking class fun anyway. Overall, a really good teacher. Highly recommended!
Pretty good guy. Class can be a bit boring. Make sure you take good notes because that's what his exams are based on primarily. It's easy to get a good grade in his class. He has a very big curve, almost one letter grade up. I hardly paid attention and pulled a B.
Good teacher, not easy but helpful and had a great way of teaching you things.

Material extremely difficult for me, pulled a B out of my ass, first class of college that truly tested me.

Pretty good teacher. He has a soft voice though and so it's easy to fall asleep in class. Don't sign up for his 8 AM if you're not a morning person!
His way of teaching the indepth philisophical ideals demands interest from his students.
DO NOT TAKE!! HArd class. You cant hear a word he says! Very anal when grading your writing. Tests are difficult.
His lectures were pretty boring, I was constantly watching the clock. But if you study for the exams you can pull of a B no problem. He does take attendace though, which bites. He not bad, but not great either.
GREAT class, i loved every minute of it. had it at 8 am though, sometimes hard to stay awake. professor is very helpful if you have questions, and he likes you if you participate. almost no homework, very little reading, and multiple choice tests were a breeze.
don't take his 8 AM class if you're not a morning person, because he'll put you to sleep easily. he's willing to explain the stuff more if you don't get it though, and if you pay attention, the tests shouldn't be too hard. i was lazy so i didn't do so hot...
didnt learn a thing.
Pretty boring class, didnt learn much, but some of the topics are interesting, he shouldnt lecture as much, and should be more interactive
hard and boring. no question. not only are the class topics boring but so is his discussion. i didnt recomend this class to any of my friends and i dont to you
I hated this class...It's SOOO BORING! He is monotone and his way of teaching is not productive...if you want a class you can sleep in...go for this one...If you want a good grade go to every single class stay awake and take very good notes...that's the only way you'll do awesome. Other than that...DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
So boring, so confusing, But no HW is nice
absolutely HATED this class. luckily, friends signed me in when i didn't want to go. absolutely boring. Don't miss too many classes because he lowers your grade. MC is hard. The essays saved me. He puts up outlines onlne, but you can't understand what they're supposed to mean. Most boring teacher ever
This class is hard for me because the guy can talk for an hour and still not make a point. its ethics, so theres no right or wrong answer to anything.
he is a really nice guy and likes to teach. but good luck trying to stay awake. there is no homework and he usually grades on a curve however attendence is mandatory
Hes is a nice guy and tries to help you but he can lead you to confusion because of all the explanation he gives you on the material Some lectures are confusing but taking notes will help you get through the class The quizes are a bit hard but essay exams are easier Study your notes and the sample essay questions because theyre very helpful
gives you one 2 page paper for HW during the whole semester. If you attend his lecture and pay attention (take good notes too) you'll be fine. Tests are essays. Quizes are little tricky. He's very knowledgable
This class can be easy if you are willing to show up and pay attention. The professor is a nice guy and willing to help with anything that is umclear. I would definitely take another class with him.. very personable professor.
OMG. His class is boring. But he is very helpful. He repeat the material over and over until you get it. But the EXAM for me is difficult. The multiple choice is tricky and has run-on sentences. Doesnt give extra credit.
Awesome instructor. There was one paper to write, it was submitted online - and the deadline is in the evening. Quizzes are tricky: AP style M/C! Extremely helpful. His voice is a bit low in volume, and it's not the most interactive class. If you don't get it, go to his office hours - he'll clarify it well. Do the practice exams - they help!!
A genuinely great professor and person in general. Flexible with hardship, as well as presenting material in a very interesting manner. Posts lectures online, utilize them...limited book use, might just want to borrow...overall a well done class.Easy B if you go to class, tougher to get the A. Definitely recommended.
Good, thorough professor, however VERY HARD class. Introduces you to a new way of thinking, hard to grasp straight out of high school. Quizzes = extremely hard. LOTS of hours studying for this class. Very helpful in office hours. Teaches from powerpoint. Hope you like to write notes and essays...
I thought he was ridiculously boring, the topics he taught were stupid. All i learned was ~5 different ways philosophers use to think about morals, hundreds of years ago. Made us buy a book to read 2 articles out of. I did get bs and cs on tests and papers with little studying. Other teachers teach about better, more interesting topics
Good teacher, and cares about his students. He really kept my attention considering his class was at 8 a.m. Lots of reading, but most of it is interesting. All quizzes are multiple choice, and they are challenging. The exams are essays and easy if you know the stuff. He gives study guides and you always know what to expect on the exams and quizzes.
He's an understanding guy and cares about his students. Practice exams with short essays are exactly the same on the tests just using different names. So pre-write your essay and memorize it and you'll be fine. I never did any of the readings from the book but the readings he posts on beachboard is helpful. He seems intimidating on the first day
good teacher but class is hard. just pay attention. i keep zoning out so i got bad grade cuz i have add or something so just pay attention.
Great Professor! Attendance is mandatory for a good grade. It's a lot of work, but hes very helpful; you can e-mail him q's & even your entire essay and he will get back to you quickly. He gives you a sample question for all papers you will have to write and plenty of time to prepare for exams. As long as you pay attention & study you'll be fine.
huffaker is a great guy, passionate about ethics. the material is interesting, but the tests are hard to get a good grade on. 2 quizzes, 2 tests, 1 paper. he is intimidating at first, but he will definitely help you. the essay tests are the hardest part because you have to memorize A LOT of material. this class is a challenge!
This class is not fun, but not unbearable. Lectures are scattered and full of words that I couldn't understand. There are three quizzes, two tests, and the final. The tests are essay tests. The only reason I passed the tests were because of study groups so I definitely recommend that. I never read anything, but it would probably help.
He is an extremely nice guy, but the class can get kind of difficult. He gives practice tests online, so as long as you do that one and understand it, the tests shouldn't be hard. It just takes a lot of preparation, but he gives you all the information needed for it. He is always willing to help though.
Phildon is a great professor, he's intimidating at first, but really knows his stuff. Class can be hard, read, study, go to office hours if you have to and you'll do fine. If you use a laptop, don't go on the internet during class, when he says he will revoke laptops for notes, he means it. Take this class!
Well...he wants the best for his students. He gives homework every day, attendance is required, 3 midterms & 1 final, and 2 pop quiz. His lectures are on power point and most of the hw is posted on beachboard. I did like the professor but its seriously tons of work. hope this helps.
Huffaker is really a great professor! I heard bad things and was very uneasy about taking him. But I hung in there because I NEEDED the class, and turned out to be my FAVORITE class of the semester! You have to go to class, but pay attention he will tell you everything that you need to know for the test, literally everything! Just don't be lazy!
Huffaker is a helpful teacher, but his class is extremely difficult. When he says you can't cram before the test, he means it. But he does want the best for his students and is extremely helpful when you ask questions in class, email, etc.
This teacher should be avoided, he is very biased on his gradings for essays. He is extremely dull to listen too as well. The class itself is not that hard but he takes attendance and it hurts your grade if your late or do not participate. Worst phil 100 teacher to take by far.
Really interesting class, but to get a good grade you really need to take good notes. MUST ATTEND CLASS! Three midterms, two papers and a final.
Readings can be quite complex, but he explains it very clearly. Great professor! He is willing to help if you're confused with anything. Attend class because his lectures are basically the exams. It should be pretty easy to get an A if you study his lectures.
The reading is really difficult to interpret the first time around so re-reading, study sessions and asking him questions would be the best thing to do. He's a great professor who really cares about his students succeeding but Ethics in general is just so complex.
He is a very boring professor. Repeats the same thing a lot. Essays were very difficult but the quizzes were fairly simple. Biased grader on essays. He was available for help and did respond to e-mails quickly and elaborately. Avoid taking him if possible.
to summarize my semester. the material is difficult and complex. but that's because it's PHILOSOPHY. as long as you pay attention, study a bit, you will get at least a B. He is very helpful in helping you understand. I was doing poorly, but got an awesome grade and got a B in the class instead of a D
Huffaker is a very organized and effective lecturer. He seems to legitimately care about his students, unlike most instructors. His classroom policies are strict but fair. Easy B. An A will take more work.
I actually enjoyed this class, even though it's a bit hard to keep up with. Gotta read!
I don't know what that comment below said that he was boring. Yes, the material might get a little bit dry but this guy really cares about his students. I had taken phil 100 and was dreading to take a philosophy class again but I really liked it and would recommend to anyone who doesn't mind doing actual homework not just be there for an easy grade
I agree with the recent comments I went into class not knowing anything about philosophy and I really enjoy it. It requires work but hey we're in college
Very good teacher. He explains everything perfectly, although it can get kind of boring sometimes, it is important to take notes. He gives study guides before every midterm which are helpful, no homework just 2 midterms and the final. Attendance is mandatory, he takes roll.
Great Professor! He is the reason why I became a Philosophy major. He is really helpful during office hours and replies to emails quickly. He cares about his students and is really passionate about Philosophy. He is a bit difficult to hear, but sit in the front and you should be okay. It is best if you actually do the reading or at least skim.
His class is always lectures, but they are always very interesting and provides good notes. No homework, just graded on exams and essays. Easy A, just have to pay attention and study
This professor does a good job in explaining the readings but the quizzes and tests are difficult. The quizzes have some misleading questions while the tests are basically two essay questions in an hour. He also expects you to stretch out a concept far more than needed for a complete explanation. Interesting topics but avoid this class if possible.
He is a very nice teacher who cares about his students passing. He is willing to help, so take initiative and see him for help in needed. Interesting class that does require thinking and honestly he is a great professor.
Not very clear in how the essays are suppose to be written, GAs are the ones who grade his papers, some are a little to strict on how the papers are written.
He is a very nice guy and tries to help you the best way that he can. He knows his stuff! Need to keep up with the readings and study beforehand, not the night before. Not a class for lazy people. Try and make a study group, that can help. Overall great professor :)
Notes straight forward in powerpoint, but A LOT OF READING!! Essay exams are EXTREMELY difficult and he is very articulate in grading as well. Quizzes had minimal questions but missing 1 docks your grade. I advise you NOT TO TAKE HIS CLASS!!
Very nice and it seems he likes what he teaches. Challenging class, what you put into it is what you get. Don't be afraid to ask for help!
he cares a lot for students. Attendance is a must because he gives homework every night. He reviews hwk and is extremely helpful if you don't understand. Instructions are very clear and homework helps with essays. He's very organized. Overall I enjoyed his class, he made everything easy to understand.
Very good professor in general but his essay questions are so specific and hard, that if you dont study before hand it will be very difficult to pass.
i personally hated this class, its really boring and he made me fall asleep. the material is really hard too. the quizzes arn't so bad but the tests are all essay questions and are really really hard. HAVE TO DO READING.i would try to get a different professor but he is fine if you cant. not the worst teacher but definitely not the best.
Great professor! Very challenging class that you need to read a lot of the material. Visit him often.
Yes, the topic is challenging, the readings are extensive, and tests are lengthy, but the professor is great. He explains everything thoroughly, and provides sample essay questions to help you prepare (which I HIGHLY recommend doing- no cramming, constantly study!). I was struggling at first, but I pulled through with an A.
If you need a philosophy class, dont take 160. Huffaker is nice, but the subject is difficult and the readings are not easy to understand, so going to class is important to get the notes, and visiting his office hours will help, i visited once for the final exam and I think that helped me pass the class and he remembers you. Overall he's the homie
I passed fairly easily, but it required the most work of all my classes. Tons of people thought it was really hard and dropped. It is definitely do-able. When he says "Put in lots of detail" PUT IN LOTS OF DETAIL. People did badly on the tests because they didn't explain enough. If you do what he says you'll be fine. If you're a slacker you'll fail
He is extremely boring and i feel like there should be a prerequisite for the class because he expects far too much. about 75/200 people withdrew instead of failing. His lectures are everywhere and the book is extremely difficult to understand. i once took a 5hr energy and still fell asleep during his lecture.
Phildon, is a very tough grader. You definitely have to read a lot, and the class takes up a lot of free time. You will probably spend 6-12 hours outside of class either reading or studying the class. The subject is interesting but difficult to put into words.
The class is interesting, but he is a tough grader. You only have essay exams and they are extremely difficult even though he gives you the prompt a few days before. You really need to study and and read over the book which isn't always easy to understand. You really have to work for your grade in this class.
If you don't like reading, go to class EVERY SINGLE DAY so things make sense to you. He takes attendance daily. Take good notes, and write down his explanations verbatim. You have in-class essay exams. The concepts are difficult to put into words by yourself, so use HIS wording. It will make more sense. Take Phil 100 instead if you can.
I loved this class..even though he grades hard, he makes you interested in the material and if you email him with questions he is SO helpful. if you have questions on anything make sure to email him because he really goes out of his way to make sure you understand everything. I got an A in the class an A on every single exam
Professor Huffaker is that one professor at SMC that will not only make you work for your grade, but encourage the best potential from you while you are with him. One quote specifically remembered now, which helps me understand so much now was, "If I didn't have expectations of you then I wouldn't even be worthy to be a professor." Recommended.
Tough class. But he is soooooo helpful and very clear! He will edit your papers and give great feedback. Assignments and exams are based on in class notes only, no outside research so attendance is a must! Grade is based on 2 papers and 3 exams. Textbooks arent really used
Professor Huffaker was fair, clear, and honest about his expectations in this course. The hardest part of this course is learning to write out someone else's ideas without any of your own commentary. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and it changed my view of the world, but don't get too entranced and be sure to take notes, you will need them!
