Mr. Huffaker was a good and fair teacher.
Fantstic Teacher! Such a sweetheart. Very helpful although if you email him thats when he can answere your questions best. FAB he's darling
Great professor. Spends plenty of time reviewing material from previous lectures. Tests were very fair and straight-forward.
Overall I enjoy his class. If you have any problems just approach him and he is really cool and understanding. His tests are a little bit difficult, but so is the material. I can't really complain; some people just get philosophy and others don't. I wish we had homework though to boost your grade, instead of just tests and papers.
This guy kicks ass at teaching. I wish more teachers were like him. Everything is clear and concise. He makes my other teachers look like Nazis.
beautiful person, helpful teacher, easy and fun class. highly recommended for anyone who likes to think but doesn't necessarily like extra work... this class was the BEST!
This guy is a pretty good philosopher but a very unclear teacher. You are encouraged to ask questions but his answers are rarely helpful. He talks alot but says very little. The tests aren't based on how well you know the material but rather how well you can decipher through tricks and traps.
I like to see teachers with this kind of passion for their subject. Pilosophy can be a head ache if you dont stay on track and Huffaker does a great job.
Huffaker is an extremely helpful teacher. He provides his class with an open and comfortable environment and seeks to be very approachable and understanding. He is a great teacher and a great human being. Some of his multiple choice is a little tricky, but he is mostly very straightforward about what he expects you to know for essays and exams.
Mr. Huffaker is very organized, clear and helpful. Lectures from Powerpoint slides he makes available online. You must work, esp. to prepare for essay part of tests & on 2 papers. MS a little tricky, but if you've studied you'll do fine. Most test/essay info. from lectures, not the reading. *Extremely* approachable, humble, cool. Attendance counts.
He is a very nice guy, but the class is purely lecturing about history, with no philosophizing, which is a shame. Also, he doesn't really know what he's talking about and I sometimes feel like he makes things up just to appear smarter. Whenever you ask a question, he spends ten minutes answering, without actually every addressing your question.
Mr Huffaker is an extremely reasonable and straight forward teacher who really cares about his students. He grades very forgivingly on essays although his multiple choice is a little difficult to get used to. I learned a lot in his class and I got an A and I never felt overwhelmed. I definitely recommend this teacher.
Professor Huffaker is just an amazing professor. Before taking this class, I had no interest or even slight idea about philosophy. He makes it clear for you to understand with powerpoint slides. Make sure to take notes during class, thats where tests come from. really understanding and truly cares about his students.
He really enjoys what he is teaching. I just didn't understand philosophy at all so I didn't get a good grade in the class. I don't recommend this class if you think it's about God/world. It's more about history and ideas from main philosophers. Boring. But he's a good teacher and willing to help. The papers are hard though...
huffaker isn't teaching an easy course.. but he tries to make it as easy as he can.. he is definetly fair.. and he is a good teacher.. has good insights.. def worth taking!
This guy is an amazing professor. the subject isnt easy at all however Huffaker is very approachable. if you have any questions or problems with the material, you can easily talk to him and he'll do his best to explain it. the papers were hard and challenging, but once again all you need to do is ask for help and he'll give it to you. awesome guy!!
phildon is incredibly helpful and personable. He really values in class participation. I did most, but not all of the reading, and paid attention in class and got an A.
good teacher
No Extra Points. Difficult Tests. Very Strict Essay Grading. Poor feedback on the essay grading. Highly demanding, but teaching poorly. In the Fall Semester only 3 students got “As.” I do NOT recommend this class.
Phildon is a fantastic Philosophy teacher and by far the best teacher at SMC. His class is challenging but he helps you by providing excellent powerpoint slides. Philosophy is a tough subject but Phildon is helps you understand it. This class will stretch you intellectually and will teach you how to think outside the box. Take it to improve your
I had no idea that I would end up learning so much in this class! This class is certainly not an easy A for a G.E. by any means, but this isn't elementary school - Phildon presents difficult material in a very simple way, and his love for the subject was very inspiring to me. Highly recommended!!
He's a great teacher. Just show up and take the notes. He's very nice and there's 3 tests and 3 essays to write..each one is a bigger percent of your grade then the last. The books definintely help you to understand what he's talking about. I'm thinking about taking more philos classes after this. :)
great teacher - 3 essays and 3 exams that aren't very hard if you study. material is difficult but the teacher helps you through it. need to be able to think outside the box and think abstractly, recommended for anyone who has ever once questioned their existence or the meaning of life (everyone).
I would recommend this class to everyone. It is by far the most benificial class that I have taken regarding life in general. The pace varies a bit and you are expected to participate with questions and occasional summaries of material (influences grade). Tests require a lot of studying but there is no homework other than keeping up with reading
This professor is awesome. He wants his students to succeed.Attendance is mandatory. Most of the material for tests and essays come from lecture. Do not miss class!Take his class you will learn a lot.
Professor huffaker is a great teacher...you will enjoy his class..he is extreamly helpful both in person and over An email...he is intelligent and knows his stuff...a couple of things though is that he wants the essays extreamly detailed and I mean detailed...his test are pretty hard because All the answers seem correct..take him but just know that ur going to work hard... I had to pull a lot over nighter to study for this class and I still got a b... But work and study and Ull love this class
Great Professor! Very passionate and extremely helpful. He cares about his students, and he will do his best to make sure you understand the material. If you read the articles in advance, it's easier to follow along in class.
Very very good teacher. Patient and very clear. He will always try to help you. His lectures are very interesting. You do have to attend every single lecture and take very detailed notes, but you will learn so much in return. His tests are not that hard you just have to make sure you take very good notes because some little things might be on test
Huffaker's cool but his lectures are pretty boring. He is passionate and knows philosophy like the back of his hand. He's willing to help and wants you to do well. It's a pretty in depth detailed class. If you're looking for an easy A this isn't it. I don't recommend this class if your fulfilling IGETC requirement.
SUCH a boring class (philos1)! It is all about him giving a lecture and that's it. No activities, group discussions or even a tiny homework that makes you get into the philosophical thinking easier. This is the only class where I haven't got to know anyone because he does not encourage discussion, which I believe is the key to success!
Some people have said it was boring.I think it depends on your class my class always had active discussions. I loved this class. He's very helpful allowed us to email him drafts through out the semester for all assignments.I got an A. Must have the books and read. The first exam is mul. choice/essay, everything from then on is essay (in class)
loved this professor!!! best professor ever! makes you love fall in love with the subject! :) take hm!
Mr.Huffaker is amazing! if you take him take alot of note and keep up with readings. there are no homework assignments, just 4 essay exams that will be based on all the info covered in class. Take him!
This class is a joke, he is very difficult and your grade is based on in class essays, he has no sense of humor and is very boring, he always talks about random stuff. I do not recommend him.
He's a really sweet guy and when he lectures you know his passion for the subject. Be warned, this whole class depends on how well you take notes because those are the only things that will help you when it comes to studying. Besides first exam, everything else is an in class essay with no notes allowed, so be prepared! Not an easy A, but possible
Excellent Professor, engages you to join in lectures. Always open for questions and is there to help. Easy A? No! But definitely doable! Take notes on everything he says and what other students comment on. Essays are based solely on in class discussions so attendance is really important. Really enjoyed the class!
He lulls you into a false sense of security with his cheery demeanor and the first multiple-choice exam. Papers were straightforward. Midterm was gnarly. The rest of your grade is the final. Exams are lecture-based; bought the books, but never used them. He's helpful if you seek him out. I’d recommend him if you’re willing to work for your grade.
Huffaker an alright teacher. but he is so ambiguous. if youre like me& need straightforward answers& someone who can CLEARLY answer questions, then do NOT take his class. he is all over the place& his slide shows are not useful. everything is purely based on what he says (which is confusing) and if you mange to keep up with his ambiguous lectures.
Let's face it, students who are not Philosophy majors want easy Professors. Dear Professors, we're just trying to keep a good GPA so we can keep our financial aid! He is extremely hard grader. But he extremely nice and understandable. If you're a Philos major, take him, if you're not, steer clear! I don't recommend if you're not a philos major.
I read his ratings and challenged myself and took this class. He is not an easy grader, however, he is always there to help you. He is always happy to go over what you do not understand. I am not a Philosophy major, but I loved this class, P.S. the lecture notes helped me more than the book, but read if you need clarification on a subject.
Huffaker is a compassionate and wise professor with a great wealth of knowledge. His papers require a lot of thorough explanation, which has expanded my own writing abilities. I highly recommend him. Huffaker's method of teaching, though, is a bit dated. Laptops aren't allowed in class and rigorous note-taking is required to keep up with lectures.
I literally blanked out and stared at the board all semester long. I got an A. Just wrote the two essays and crammed for the 2 tests and final like one night before. So duable.
I spent three years at SMC, and if there is one class that I can say drastically changed the way I see the world, it would be Philosophy 1 taught by Professor Huffaker. Without a doubt the most thought provoking and fascinating class I have ever taken. I never wanted to miss class! Lots of reading but it's amazing. A must-take class.
Professor Huffaker is that one professor at SMC that will not only make you work for your grade, but encourage the best potential from you while you are with him. One quote specifically remembered now, which helps me understand so much now was, "If I didn't have expectations of you then I wouldn't even be worthy to be a professor." Recommended.
Tough class. But he is soooooo helpful and very clear! He will edit your papers and give great feedback. Assignments and exams are based on in class notes only, no outside research so attendance is a must! Grade is based on 2 papers and 3 exams. Textbooks arent really used
Huffaker is one of my favorites. He'll really go out of his way to help you succeed and is always in a great mood with tons of energy! As interesting as Ethics can be, it's also a bit challenging at times. Huff will make you think... just take good notes and review often. Philosophy major or not, this class is worthwhile for anyone open-minded.
Go to class and take CLEAR, DETAILED notes and ask questions, he'll be willing to answer and go in depth. You don't have to read the assigned pages to do well. There is only 3 tests so do well on all of them or your grade suffers! He wants to see you do well! Some points the class is boring but if you're a philosophy major you probably will enjoy.
Really good professor, makes things clear. As long as you pay attention and are able to explain things back to him exactly the way he explains it and you can show you understand things you can pass. Doesn't really use a book for ethical philosophy. Really nice and makes corny jokes, if you have a question.. ASK IT.
Huffaker ROCKS! Nice, easy going, straight forward. TAKE NOTES+READ THEM,OVER AND OVER!! Lectures get long, we are talking about some really old dudes here, I suggest sitting up front and be more engaged in what he's saying. You'll have an easier time passing and enjoy the learning experience more if you do. I minor in Philosophy now. Thanks Huff.
This professor has to be the most organized professor I've ever seen. All the points he wants to see on papers and exams are literally hand fed to you during lectures and are posted afterwards online. Just take notes and read them while writing your papers. My only problem with him would be those 5-15 minute motivational speeches he does often.
This teacher is flat out amazing
Pretty chill professor. All coursework is straight from his lectures (some are boring but mainly due to the subject). Didn't touch any of the books and got a high B. Very clear on what he expects on all assignments. 1 exam, 2 outside papers, and 2 in class essays. Go to class and take good notes and you'll pass easy. Definitely recommended!
Very open, goes into detail but is straight forward. He is there is you have any questions. Lectures are entertaining but take very good notes.
You NEED to attend class in order to pass, I cannot stress this enough. All that's expected of in the 2 exams and 2 essays is what he lectured on during class. The books are back ups, to help you understand what was discussed in class. Overall he's straightforward, as long as you pay attention and put your part in as a student you'll pass.
Professor Huffaker's Philosophy class was so great! I fell a much more skilled critical thinker and writer. His classes are so inspiring, interactive, and interesting! I would totally take his class again.
Very cool professor- Lecture can be boring, but he uses personal experience to spice it up a bit- Quizzes/test are moderate easy, but he is a very lenient grader- I did not use the text book at all, and all the notes go on canvas- If you need to take this class for GE, I would take Huffaker- Very cool and accessible-
He's amazing. Really easy to talk to and ready to explain anything you don't understand. Philosophy can be a bit boring but he makes it pretty engaging.
Philosophy is hard to do well in at first.. I studied so hard for the first test and failed. Then I reworked my understanding, thanks to Huffaker, and ended up getting an A. If you try your best (go to office hours, ask questions), he will work with you. He wants you to get an A! Also, he is extremely intelligent and his lectures are a pleasure.
Wonderful teacher! My favorite so far. Really inspirational, loves teaching and gives great life advice. Has office hours, and is easy to talk to. Really cares about his students and their journey. Class was interesting too.
Professor Huffaker is a really amazing guy. He's very friendly and he knows the subject well. However, this class was extremely difficult for me. I found the material a bit hard to understand and sometimes his explanations weren't very clear. I would recommend going to his office hours to make sure you get it because if you don't, that's your grade
Professor Huffaker is my favorite professor here at SMC. I had him for Phil 1 in the fall and recently had him in Enviro Studies this spring. He genuinely cares about his students and is always there to help! He is so kind and his lectures are always interesting/ engaging. His classes really made me think and changed my views! 10/10 i recommend!!
Professor Huffaker is a really good teacher, but in order to get an A in the class you have to ace the final. Your whole grade is based on three tests and 2 essays, it is hard but go to office hours and you'll be fine you do have to buy 3 books, but overall you'll learn a lot about philosophy.
Professor Huffaker is an excellent choice for a Philosophy professor. He gives great advice on life and studying, and he gives excellent feedback when preparing for exams and essays. Two essays, one multiple choice exam, one in-class essay exam, and an in-class essay final determine your grade.
If you're genuinely interested in philosophy, read Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy. You'll learn much more from that book than a whole semester of this class. Huffaker is a nice guy, but he's not the ideal philosophy teacher. Too dogmatic and superficial in his methodology, not to mention condescending toward adult students.
Professor Huffaker has good energy when he teaches. He teaches clearly and explains concepts well. For the essays and tests, as long as you basically repeat what he said in class, you will get an 'A.' Taking notes will make this class very easy, but you can just borrow notes. The reading is easy after his lectures.
One of the most challenging writing classes I have had. Make sure you follow directions and formatting. I read all of material, took notes, only missed one class all semester, went to office hours, but still ended up with a B. I do not care about the "B" because I learned and loved his class so much. I was very engaged and enjoyed the material.
Huffaker definitely makes you work for your grade, so make sure to go over the reading several times and pay attention in class. He seems a bit serious at first, but he is actually a very interesting and amiable guy. Going to his office hours really helps. The writing is all about presenting the philosophers' arguments accurately.
Professor Huffaker is wonderful. He's funny, caring, and has a very precise way of lectures that truly help you understand the concepts. He's more than willing to work with you, give you feedback, and is understanding when it comes to personal hinderances. Overall amazing.
Honestly a pretty boring class, but this professor adds his own flare to make it more interesting. A few quizzes and tests, as well as an essay determines your grade, so don't slack on those. Write down everything he says and take detailed notes, most of what you are tested on is from his lectures. Overall, had a good experience.
The best teacher I ever had! Philosiphy can be a hard class to grasp because the info gap between now and then, but this guy has colorful metaphors and anecdotes to connect you to Socratic thinkings. The best part is, he doesnt just give the answer, he expertly leads you to it so you feel like you are actually learning, and you take away something
Professor Huffaker is an amazing teacher & person overall. Very caring and connects with the entire class like if everyone is family. He explains what he expects to be done on written exams clearly & provides study guides. Plenty of writing so being in class to take notes and ask questions will help to obtain a better grade. Overall, a great class.
Huffaker is the coolest guy. Super caring and wants you to do well. His class consists of written essays for the exams. Some are take home and the rest are in class. He gives you all the information you need to do well. Basically everything he says verbally is what you have to put on the exams. You have to study to do well and learn the material.
Professor Huffaker was fair, clear, and honest about his expectations in this course. The hardest part of this course is learning to write out someone else's ideas without any of your own commentary. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and it changed my view of the world, but don't get too entranced and be sure to take notes, you will need them!
Really understanding and sweet prof. I genuinely can say I understood this course and I enjoyed it.
Coming out of highschool, this professor really made me work for my grade. Most of the times his lectures weren't too bad, but you need to be constantly listening if you want to do well, because what he is saying is different from his slides. He takes attendance very seriously, so if you are going to take this in the morning beware.
He's such a great and caring professor, he's definitely one to remember. You really have to listen to his lectures since quizzes are based on them. Very understanding and is willing to help outside of class. Attendance mandatory, i learned from that one day i missed and missed out on a lot. Be ready to go when you enter class. Please take him!!
Show up to class!! Lectures are helpful because the text is almost always very confusing, he will explain it better in class. This class requires TIME, readings and studying, reviewing notes before class is helpful. Ask questions during class. Find study buddies to get notes if you miss class. His humor makes the class more fun
He does not accept feedback about his test if you replied back he will get mad. he always right and you are wrong.(Traditional teaching) he owns the truth. he does not accept that the test was confusing ( everyone failed) No extra credit if you ask why he thinks it is silly. He uses his cat at every philosophical theory which is boring.
He is passionate about what he teaches which makes the class interesting. Pros: Few assignments, you don't need to do the hw if you pay attention in class, he grades on a curve Cons: The material can be hard to understand at times
Professor Huffaker is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is so passionate about Philosophy that you can't help but be interested in the subject. His lectures really stuck with me. He is fair, always tells the class what he expects and as long as you pay attention in class you won't have any problems. Most importantly, you'll learn a lot!
Just Bad. "The problem with your generation......" I'm not really fond of a professor patronizing younger students every lecture. Not appropriate.
Huffaker isnt a bad professor. He's passionate about the subject but as for explaining the info you NEED for your exams, you're pretty much on your own. Briefly mentions the important things to jot down in your notes under layers of talking he does. Not learning disability friendly, his powerpoint covers the bare minimum. A slog to sit through.
His lectures are very entertaining; however, make sure you're taking good notes. Perhaps the hardest part of this class is the fact the mostly everything that comes in the test is from the lectures (what he says, not the slides) and not from the readings. Yes, you must still do the readings because that will allow you to understand the lectures.
you cannot go into this class with personal opinions and bias if you want to be graded well. You need to learn how to present the information asked of you in the way Huffaker wants to read it otherwise you will do poorly. His lectures are interesting and he is good to ask for help if you have a different learning style. would recommend.
Took this class a couple of years ago, Huffaker is a great professor who makes the material very accessible and easy to digest. Some beefy papers for sure but if you take decent notes you'll be fine.
I took professor Huffaker fall 2022, the class was interesting and the way he taught philosophy really peaked my interest, 100% recommend taking his class. Lots of reading but is needed for the writing assignments.
Phildon is a queen.Takes notes from the lectures!!! If you copy the slideshow notes you will ace the class. He does a lot of open note tests. Important to find some people in the class and start a gc for notes . If you have a different learning style than Prof, just ask him to explain it in a way that makes sense to you and he will.
I took this class in 2021 and immediately became a philosophy major. Prof. Huffaker's lectures were an entertaining, fascinating overview of the history of the field of philosophy. Essays were about showing what you learned, not grammar/technique. He really cares about making philosophy exciting, relevant, and understandable for students.
he only wants you to copy what he says word for word. if you are not in every single class with camera on he hates you. does not clarify grading criteria either, and just boring wordy lectures that he expects you to watch over and over again
