Brother Allred makes the Book of Mormon exciting and makes it personally relevant. He has good insights to the Book of Mormon. He likes to have class discussions on the things that we're learning. He's a great guy and highly recommended!
Brother Allred, in one word, is AwEsOmE!! This was my first semester here at BYU-I and I took a chance and took Allred's Honors course. I am VERY glad that I did! The discussions and papers were well worth my while, and I would take it again in a second!

One of my favorite Religion classes yet
Great teacher!
has an amazing ability for knowing references and doctrine. not too hard and not a waste of time either.
HE IS THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!! i LOVE BRO. ALLRED!
Awesome teacher. Very insightful
He really is amazing and knows his stuff! He will help you with anything that you need. If he doesn't know the answer to a question he will find out and tell you the next day.
Bro Allred is the BEST ever! He's so amazing! I took his Doct of the Gosp class and I learned SO much! All you have to do is read the lesson and do the readings that are assigned to certain lessons. It's a super easy class if that's all you're worried about. But if you really want to learn and have your testimony strengthened, take Bro. Allred!
He is awesome! He's not so focused on his lectures that he won't answer random questions, and he has a lot of quotes and knowledge of the scriptures to back up whatever question you have. He also knows a lot about other religions that he can tie into the discussions.
He is really great! He'll drift off from the lesson if he needs to (it stays spiritual). He's really amazing!! I'd take him again.
I love Bro. Allred, his class is interresting and he makes it so a lot of people want to participate. And if someone asks a question that he honestly doesn't know the answer to, he isn't afraid or embarrassed to say that he doesn't know the answer. But he usually knows the answer and has a quote and some scriptures to go with it. I love him.
I love Brother Allred, he is my favorite teacher ever!! I have changed and re changed my schedule many times so i can have him as a teacher this fall so i'm taking his class at 7:45am! He's funny, and really gets you into the book of Mormon! He has class discussions and wants to get to know you. He's not super hard, just enough!!
This guy is the SHIZ. And I don't mean the Jaredite Warlord. He is the MOST FUNNY guy you will ever meet, and he truly cares if you feel the spirit or not. His assignments are all due on blackboard, so you can get them done in like 4 weeks if you try, and his final is also online and taken from the readings and other homework. pretty easy huh?
Brother Allred is SO amazing. He always teaches with the Spirit, and he has the best way of helping you discover the Gospel! If I could, i would get him as a teacher for ALL of my religion classes.
Brother Allred is fantastic. SO funny, wants to get to know all his students and really cares. Has really good insights to the scriptures with countless talks, quotes, etc to back it up. He's not just cheesy funny but actually hilarious.
I LOVE BROTHER ALLRED!! He gives just enough homework for a religion class where you still learn but you're not overwhelmed. He cares that you are learning and is great at responding to any questions you have. TAKE HIM, HE'S AWESOME!!
Great way to start your day! He is always very positive and I feel refreshed at the end of his class. Great with class participation and humble in his teaching.
I took Family Foundations from Brother Allred. He really knows his stuff. A textbook wasn't required (we would just read talks from LDS.org. He can be hilarious. He follows the Spirit when teaching and is ALWAYS very helpful and willing to work with you. He never makes you feel stupid. Wonderful teacher!
This class was only two credits but I did more work in the class then my four credit science classes. All the work in the class is busy work. Some classes periods I learned something but for the most part class was random discussion.
Brother Allred let the students lead the class. We discussed what we wanted to and he always had information to go along with it. He was a great teacher, lots of enthusiasm, I plan on taking another class from him.
Great teacher, I took 3 classes from him and enjoyed them all. You do have to keep a diary which can sometimes be a pain if your not used to it. But it is worth it in the end.
Amazing professor!! Knows so much about the gospel and is always happy and upbeat. Really cares about his students and is always willing to help you in anyway and do what he can. I loved his classes!!!
He is way fun!
Bro. Allred is a great teacher! He has you read a ton of articles, which I think is awesome because you learn so much from them. He lets the students lead classroom discussion, and has us all contribute practical applications of the talks to marriages and families. He's very friendly and willing to answer questions after class time.
Excellent professor. He knows a ton about the scriptures and encourages edifying conversation. I learned a lot from him. He gives a really easy quiz at the beginning of every class and there are two pretty easy projects in the semester.
The readings he has you do are consise and to the point. Doesnt have you read ten sections of scripture that say the same thing like other teachers do. Projects are kind of fun. Classes are fun because he makes the scriptures real, ins't uptight, has a great sense of humor, and knows each student by name! I learned alot and loved his class!
AMAZING teacher! Bro. Allred is the best! I loved his class. super easy! He is so funny and makes class so much fun. I wish i could take him for every class. He is such a great guy!
i love brother allred! we have readings and a quiz each class period but it's easy and you grade your own. and a midterm and final paper you write, no tests. i learned so much each class period and he is hilarious. take a class from him if you can!
He is awesome. He brings the spirit to each and every class and has such useful information for you and your future family. You can tell that he practices what he preachs and is an all around amazing teacher.
Brother Allred is a wonderful teacher. Every class was enjoyable and uplifting.
Bro Allred is the most energetic teacher of all time. Just showing up to class fills you with the spirit. This man knows how to teach and teaches with love and authority. HE IS THE TEACHER TO TAKE!
He is the best teacher EVER!!!!!!
Brother Allred is so great! He is an extremely insightful person and can quote just about any general authority or scripture. He will make things easy for your to understand. He also likes to pose questions that helps you to remember that the class isn't memorization etc. Its about knowing the gospel and discovering its possibilities.
He is really great! The only thing that could be hard about his class are the daily quizzes. If you read the chapters assigned in the student manual and go over it a few times you'll do just fine. Despite the quizzes he is an excellent teacher! He has so much love for the church and his family it makes you happy! I would recommend him to anyone!
Good teacher but I wish he would have the students talk less and have him talk more because I want to hear what he knows and not what all the idiots that went on missions have to say. His midterms and finals feel more like busy work and not like I'm actually learning something but they're easy enough. Take a lot of time tho.
Fantastic teacher! He is so insightful and teaches with the spirit. Great class discussions. There are daily quizzes on the chapters from the manual. The midterm and final are just essays. Loved the class!
I love Brother Allred! So so insightful! I learned so much! The class is easier then other BOM classes in the fact that he doesn't require any reading journal or anything. Just daily reading and quizzes. I totally recommend him!! He does use the student manual extensively though - so always make sure to read the assigned reading for each class.
Brother Allred has an interesting classroom. His teaching style is different than any other I've had so far. His open discussions made learning the Book of Mormon more interative and intriguing to me.
Brother Allred is the man! He is super smart and can answer almost any question. The only homework are daily quizes which are a breeze if you do the reading. Take him for sure!
I really enjoyed BoM2 with Bro. Allred. He made class fun even though a religion class can be boring, too. I learned a lot this semester and really appreciated the way he motivates students. Highly recommended!
Brother Allred is such a good teacher. TAKE A CLASS FROM HIM. He totally teaches by the spirit even if it means not making it through his lesson. He invites class comments and spends time to answer questions, even questions that sometimes may be hard to answer concerning the gospel. He's also funny! My favorite religion teacher by far.
One cool guy! A quiz every day, based on the workbook where you practicaly have to memorize the passages, but midterms and finals not to bad. No surprises. Class discussions were incredible though - very thought provoking and inspiring, the spirit was always there. At first I was skeptical of a student lead discussion class, but ended up loving it!
He has general idea of where he'd like to take the lesson, but allows students to lead the discussion. Each class begins w/ quiz from student manual reading. If you remember what the general authorities say in it, you'll do fine. There is a 3-5 paper midterm and final, fairly easy. Great professor. Willing to spend time w/ students outside of class
He teaches with the Spirit and motivates you to be better. He is extremely down to earth and easy on his grading. There are daily quizzes which double as attendance, but they are easy if you do the readings. I will take another class from him for sure.
Brother Allred is amazing! Teaches with the spirit! Has a great sense of humor, clear in what he expects, and allows class discussion. TAKE HIM!! I would definitely take another class from him!
Very easy class. The only course work is daily quiz's from the reading, and an easy midterm and final project.
"Cake"
Brother Allred is the BEST teacher I have ever had in all of my schooling. I was so excited to come to his class everyday. He isn't afraid of hard questions about the gospel. He will answer anything and is so knowledgeable! He is funny and the class is always a discussion rather than a boring lecture. Best class I've ever taken.
Brother Allred is an awesome teacher. The class was fun to go to and super helpful. If you do your reading before class you will get an A in the class. He makes the class fun but also allows you to learn a lot.
Leads very insightful discussions about our unit, gotta make sure you come to class prepared by reading the talks in your FF packet. Offers memorizing Family Proc paragraphs for extra credit. Daily quizzes over assigned talks. Pretty simple class, be involved and you'll enjoy your time there. Unit tests can be tricky if you haven't studied
I feel that Brother Allred is a great teacher and strives to help his students learn as much as they can. The one thing that really bothers me about brother Allred are his pre-class quizzes. These quizzes are poorly worded and he tries to "trick" you. These quizzes are a main source of your grade so you better do well on them.
This is the second class I have taken from Brother Allred. He makes every lecture uplifting and spiritual. You learn a lot about the subject matter, and strengthen your own testimony. Plus the work is really easy; show up to class, do a quick quiz before each class period, and do a small midterm and final. I would highly recommend him.
The class is really inspirational by reading a ton of conference talks. Each week there is a 600 word essay that has to be written on the study questions which doesn't seem too bad but it can seem over board. Missing one essay will bring your grade down a ton, expect one letter grade!!! Which is a little ridiculous. Learned a lot of insight!
Great professor! Bro Allred is inspirational and always teaches to edify. Expect readings from the manual and scriptures. This class helps students use gospel tools to deepen and enlighten their scripture study. In addition to your personal study, you'll learn to study commentaries from prophets, apostles and other gospel scholars. There is a final
Bro. Allred is a fantastic teacher, and I would take him again in a heartbeat. I think the nature of the class is hard already, and it was a little unclear what we were expected to read and do. There are a couple projects that are pretty specific and time consuming. The final is pretty tough as well. Tough class, but I really enjoyed it.
His lectures are very interesting and the reading assignments are awesome. Tests are open book.
Bro Allred is fantastic. He is probably the most real professor that I've ever had. He's willing to discuss controversial topics and guide the class in a good direction. He promotes learning and gaining your own testimony, but allows you to get there on your own and in your own way. He'll give you material to learn from, but leaves the rest to you.
He's so lively and fun! He makes his expectations clear and they aren't hard to achieve. Every class you have a small quiz on the readings and the questions are pretty specific, but after a while you get the hang of them. Not too much work
He is THE BEST Religion teacher I have had at BYU-I so far, He really knows the doctrine and is really humble and willing to learn with and from his students. I am taking all my religion classes from him from now on.
Really great teacher! Amazing discussions! Lots of reading but nothing too out of control. Highly recommend this teacher.
I took this professor for the Eternal Families class and at first everything seems kinda overwhelming due to all the church talks you have to read, but he selects talks that are super insightful and inspirational. Really cares about his students on and off campus and is REALLY knowledgable. Recommend 10/10
Amazing teacher. Does a great job at getting the class involved in discussions. Assigns a LOT of readings and asks you to read all the assigned readings three times each with an hour spaced between each reading... It created far more work than normal.
Funny, cool guy who is willing to learn and listen from his students. Easy layout compared with other religion classes Ive taken
Amazing teacher. He really cares about our success. The class requires a bit of reading but nothing unusual. Every 2 weeks we have a podcast to listen to so you don't even show up to class!
Loved Brother Allred. My favorite religion teacher. He makes lectures exciting and makes it very open so everyone participates. He knows so much about the gospel and relates every comment or question back to what prophets have said and scriptures.
This class was very interesting. He is very passionate about religion and loves to engage the class in his lessons. It's very simple: show up, take notes, do the readings and homework and projects, and then you pass. He loves talking and will fill the entire hour and most times the end of the class hour cuts him off.
Bro Allred is hands down the best prof I've ever had. His passion for the topic & thought provoking discussions make for amazing lectures; I've always left class inspired and in deep thought. He's super understanding and cares about his students and their well being. Show up, don't miss more than five days (or you will fail), and take notes.
He's a fantastic teacher. He's pretty bold, but always has a thoughtful answer for every question. He's flexible and understanding, and he trusts and respects his students and values their input. No homework except daily reading assignments and an easy project for each unit.
Had to leave behind a positive rating so other students will know where to go if they want to make their life easier. Bro Allred is a great teacher, I can hardly come up with any criticism for him, so this concludes my short review.
Super funny dude. Lots of reading but I expected it. He has a phd from Norte Dame at BYUI. Really insightful and the class was good.
Brother Allred is AWESOME! I took him for Pearl of Great Price and Eternal Families. He inspires great discussions and has helped me understand fundamental truths of the gospel as well as some really cool deep doctrinal points. He is a kind man and willing to listen. I've talked to him many times after class and he always offers great advice. :)
Brother Allred is really great. He definitely cares about each students wants to get to know each student. If you ever have questions, just ask him. This class was probably the least amount of reading I had in a religion class. However, with the reading program used the reading is still full of inspiration and discussion with the class.
Brother Allred was really kind and cared about every single one of us. Even over a zoom lecture. He made sure to check in and that we were doing alright. His class was not hard but attendance was mandatory.
Bro. Allred is my favorite professor I've had! Our class discussions were always so good and you could feel the spirit during every single one of them. He also makes time to get to know the people in his class and makes you feel cared about through the way that he will respond to questions that you have. Be ready to do a lot of good reading though!
A very routine class, which I found nice, because I never forgot to do assignments. Classes were all lectures based on Perusall readings, but were interactive- Bro. Allred is good at changing a discussion to fit the questions that come up. Notes are required every class. All in all, not a stressful class, and Bro. Allred is very understanding.
Brother Allred was a great teacher! I was in his eternal family and he was really good at leading discussions and being respectful. We did have to take notes and do readings, but honestly if you tried it was pretty easy. Brother Allred was just overall awesome!
I had Brother Allred for the course he helped create, "Jesus Christ Everlasting Gospel". He is an amazing teacher and really cares about his students. He has you do a perusall before each class period which is just a talk / some scriptures to prep you for class, and the class goes over the same stuff.
Brother Allred is awesome. I am taking another class from him next semester. I didn't get a good grade in the class but that was honestly my fault, I slept through class a good amount and didn't do every assignment, but you could definitely get an A if you put a little effort in.
Bro. Allred really knows his stuff! He's obviously very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches, which is really nice. However, it's a 2-credit class and he gives homework befitting at least a 3-credit class, so get ready to not just "cruise thru" this class. But, he shares fantastic insights and stories and he's a great teacher.
I LOVE BRO ALLRED! His class was amazing. Instead of lecturing, he introduces a subject and then has us ask questions and has a whole discussion about the it. I love his style of teaching. I learned so much. He's so respectful and he really cares for your grade and for your testimony. No exams, just class notes and some papers.
Brother Allred is awesome! He is always there to answer any questions you throw at him and loves class discussions. He cares about each of his students and wants them to succeed. There is class notes you turn in for attendance, and readings for homework. There isnt really any tests. This class was easy once you get the routine down.
I really enjoyed Brother Allred as a teacher. He clearly knows his stuff and his wisdom shows throughout every class. However, for a 2 credit class, the amount of homework is ridiculous. Most things are only worth 10 points, but require extensive essays, notes, etc. If you have a full load already, I honestly wouldn't recommend this class.
Bro. Allred really is awesome, and I feel like I gained a ton of new insights from his lectures. For a 2 credit class, though, the amount of homework was insane. Not only was it a ton of homework, but they were only like 5-10 points each. The amount of homework can start to take away from the overall messages of the class, unfortunately.
Genuine care for students. Met with each of us personally. Studied the Family Proclamation in depth and focused on doctrine, not opinion. Spirit was definitely the teacher in Allred's class. Lots of reading, great discussions in class, some projects replace class time, allowed for late work, and was great with communication.
Brother Allred is the best religious teacher!! He deeply cares about his students and it shows. I felt that each class I learned something new and he seemed so knowledgable in the material he was providing. Would highly recommend!! :)
Always has great discussions and points, and has taught me a lot more than I expected. True for all religion courses, but there's a lot more hw than you expect. It's not seminary. there's 30 min or so or perusal reading and comments before class, and you submit notes after class. Some classes are canceled for "deep dives."
AMAZING! Very understanding. This course topic is very controversial for many, but he approaches it in a very easy way. He really sets his opinion apart from doctrine, which is something hard to find in religion professors. He is the nicest person, and if you have a genuine concern, he is willing to GUIDE you.
Brother Allred was very understanding and very fun to be around. I usually find myself dozing off in my religion classes, but I was able to keep up and be engaged in his lectures. He does provide a lot of homework, but it does kind of makeup for how short the classes are. He has a very valid and touching testimony that was very impactful
A lot of writing involved but its easy. I seriously learned so much from him and this class. I couldn't recommend him more. His lectures were so amazing. He would say something and it would be exactly what I needed to hear. A lot of discussions. Very open to questions. Makes sure we know he is there for us for anything at all.
One of the best religion teachers you can have. He teaches you how to really be a disciple of Christ. He is willing to spend time answering questions in class, even if at the expense of the lesson plan. He is funny and easy going. Great teacher!
Brother Allred is fantastic! I learned so much in his class by attending his lectures. He teaches with the spirit and helps you understand in so many ways. One thing I LOVE about him is that he asks a lot of questions and allows the spirit to guide the lectures. I have felt so heard and respected in his class! He does personal interviews too.
Brother Allred was amazing, he really cares for his students. He likes to met with each student one-on-one to get to know them, he likes to pick someone new to say the opening pray and will use it as an opportunity to get to know them. Make sure you do the reading and the assignments! He's good about late work but it can really hurt you.
He is AMAZING! Has lots of knowledge and experience. This course touches many sensitive and controversial topics, but he knows how to make them clear to you, respecting opinions. Has very inspired responses to genuine questions. If you are looking for a REL professor that doesn't teach his opinion as doctrine, just take his class.
Professor Allred is really nice, but has no idea how to structure this class. This class was two credits and had more work than any other class I have ever taken. There are crazy amounts of readings, essays due every week, and more. Not only is it a ton of work, but the grading is also super harsh (the average on the first essay was a 67%). Beware.
His TA was horrible, would mark things wrong, and not tell you why. Most of the class does bad on the test due to poor grading. He is inconsiderate and horrible. Never take him
There aren't any exams for this class but there's A LOT of reading and homework due each week. I've never had so many assignments for a religion class but they aren't too bad. It's worth it not having to worry about exams though. His lectures are amazing and I learned a lot from him! Take him for RELC200.
he handled some controversial topics very well. no tests, but heavy on reading and writing mini papers. attendance is required or you won't pass
Great guy, but not my favorite professor. Attendance is absolutely necessary. Missing more than twice will plummet your grade. Easy to zone out. No tests or quizzes, but big assignments make up most of your grade. The before class reading assignments are literally graded by AI... I would sometimes get points off and no one could tell me why.
Essays are due weekly and graded harshly; attendance is a huge chunk of your grade and there is no mercy even for big events like grad school interviews. He has letter of the law style of teaching. If you consider yourself a nuanced member at all, get ready to lie on every essay to perform well. Also, I hope you don't mind homophobic comments.
My favorite religion class at BYU but left a sour taste in my mouth. No Tests You can't miss more than once or it will hurt your grade Do not miss ANY assignments. It's half off if it's a second late (but if it's only a couple minutes email him and he'll be more merciful) It's on Canvas not learning suite which threw me off organized course well
Very strict and unfair grader. Long, nit-picky syllabus. Grade based on mindless busy-work. I wish from the bottom of my heart that I'd taken Eternal Family from any other professor. It's almost impossible to get above 9/10 on the AI graded assignments. I don't know if it's possible to get an A.
The homework and essays are not difficult, just a pain to do sometimes. You have a 1-page essay due every other week. You are graded on class notes, so don't miss class. It's nice not to have tests.
Not my favorite class. We talked more about marriage and random topics than prophets. We had to read a bunch of general conference talks and comment on them each week, which became super repetitive. My comments were mostly fluff since I ran out of things to comment about. Attendance is definitely mandatory. Not a horrible class, but not great.
