One great teacher, kinda hard tests, but absolutely worth taking

Great teacher that really keeps your attention so classes fly by! but tests are hard so intense studying might be helpful. Worth taking if you do the work.
More than half of my class ended up dropping the course, so tell me what's up with that? Obviously, the class is near impossible to pass or was it because a bunch of dumb students were in the class. SERIOUSLY CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS!!!CLASS BLOWS!!!
very enthusiastic, keeps class going, is helpful if u go to him but stilly really hard. probably 5 ppl got As.. i ended up with a C =(
great teacher, will challenge you to think in everyway. hard tests and is not a hundred percent clear on all he wants in essays. Worth taking. Does not give study sheets except for questions to think about for the essays. Do take though.
Great teacher. I liked the writing exercises that we did because it prepared me for how he wanted the exams answered.
He's a very approachable and sincere prof. He really likes teaching and Anthropology. However, for a mandatory 101 class, he demanded WAY too much memorization and detail. He can't see the forest for the trees.
Entertaining, but appearances can be deceiving. On tests, he expects you to know excruciating details and expects you to be able to critically think about aspects he hardly touched upon.
P Arnold was my favorite teacher freshman year. His sweaters are cool, but then he cut his long flowing locks. For the record, all the people I took the class with got As. whatever you do, no capri pants in his class!!
By all means, stay the heck away if you know what's best for ya! I mean it, this class is no class to blow off, you do that and you will pay dearly. I mean you'll be seeing a big fat F. And his tests are mean, they are absolutely terrible(hard & painful)
AWESOME TEACHER i learned sooo much
he's a pretty good teacher, but his expectations are way too high for a 100 level course. his tests require that you know very detailed information, some of which he may not have discussed in class.
He wants you to fail
I hate him AND his stupid sweaters
His tests are impossible, even studying doesn't seem to help at all.
he's full of himself, very cocky, and a horrible teacher. everything is based heavily on his tests which are impossible; he puts biased and poorly worded questions on his tests and quizes. DO NOT TAKE HIM! defanitely NOT worth all the effort for core.
I keep seeing all these true things about this prof- that he was taken to the dean, that literally 85% of class is getting a grade so low that they wont get credit for it, and they keep getting taken off this site. People need to know what is happening!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! IT is impossible and if you go to him for help he provides no HELP!! I HATE HIM!
This class is extremely hard!! The tests are very specific and ask the littlest details possible. It is nearly impossible to get an A in that class.
I couldn't agree more with all the people who think this class is impossible. Yes, he really was taken to the Dean, his class is that HARD! Let's not forget he starts yelling at you if you try to argue your pt. on a test ? The class is evil!
He is arrogant, contentious, superficial, and has this grand idea about his own superiority it is laughable. But the sad fact is that his students suffer- most get a C or less, a very few pull off a B. Dont take his class, or you will regret it.
definitly true statements...he is really that hard. i went to ask for some help and he didn't seem to have that word in is vocabulary. not worth the stress; take something else for the core credit.
I had Dr. Arnold for Anthro 217 Writing Intensive and he was good. If you are an excellent writer, this is the class to be in! He was very helpful and open to questions in our class...his lectures were sometimes a lil boring, but I have been in worse!
this class sucked! i don't recommend taking it. i went to him for help and all he told me was to study for his tests like they were essay questions, when they're multiple choice! horrible class, not worth all the work
His tests are really impossible. You can study all you want and fail because the questions are so skewed. NO ONE does well. I read these b4 taking him and thought Im a good student I can do well but that does not matter!!!!
Class is real hard he makes the tests impossible, he's not a bad guy its just that the lectures are so laid back, just take notes and stuff and then the first test came and you wonder where all those hard questions came from?
Exams are impossible, and qustions are way too detailed. Lectures are clear, but only somewhat helpful
while tests are hard, he always has review sessions before them, and is always receptive to questions. I was challenged at first, but all you need to do is know your notes inside out, link the concepts together, and you'll be fine. his final was a breeze
No, this is not an "easy" class. However, he informs everyone that "this is not a blow off class" during the first couple of days, so beware! Lectures are very informative, and he's just an awsome teacher. Know your notes inside out yo
Dr. Arnold is a really good teacher but yes, his tests are hard. Class isn't too boring. We watch movies sometimes and he is very passionate about what he does. It is hard work BUT there are only 3-4 tests and a final...good/bad depending on the person
Professor Arnold is a really great teacher. If you don't read the book or come to class, you won't do well on the tests, which are incredibly easy if you do. There are people who do well, and the test questions aren't impossible to understand either.
I personally hated the ordeal. It's interesting material, but his tests are quite hard, even if you show up; reading the book IS definitely a necessity if you want to do well.
His lectures are so laid back and simple you would think the exams would be to. no way!! this was the hardest class i have ever taken. Do not take this teacher!
I loved him. Go to class and read the book and the test are not bad. I didn't read the book but got chronic B+'s on the tests. The final took me five minutes. He was a lot of fun in lecture, though a little dry at times.
full of himself, has fun making his tests as hard as possible, and leaves very little room for error
Why is this man still teaching? His class was impossible, and I've said it before, more than half of my class dropped! What does that tell you? People, don't take any class he teaches, he is out to kill!!!
I love how passionate he is about the material and the class is not hard. I think he is nice, too.
Impossible class. Do NOT take!!!
this guy needs to be fired immediately! even if you take good notes and read the book he'll screw you. dont even bother registering for this class, youll be dropping it and losing credits.
I took the class figuring, easy A--wasn't easy, but I did get the A. Maybe wait til you have a semester under your belt before taking him, because he REALLY makes you learn the content. I took him 3 years ago, and still think about ****Habilis, etc. As a non-Science major, a bit hard, but worth it!
The class was not particularly hard if you studied. Nice guy, excused the two of us who had As from taking the final and just gave us the A.
He's a really cool professor. I really enjoyed his class and he really loves what he's speaking about.
i figured anthro would be sooo boring, but dr. arnold is so passionate about this class. the class is interesting. he always offers review session before exams & gives study guides. The exams are only hard if you cannot connect ideas cuz it more than memorizing. 2 quizes 2 tests no papers.A+ for him
One of the worst profs here at Loyola. two quizzes, and two tests. quizzes arent too bad, but the tests are impossible!!! AVOID!!
don't take him unless you like W's on your transcript
The test questions are not clear or direct. Hardly follows anything in the book. You can take all the notes you want, but it wont matter. The exam questions are so roundabout that you won't know which way is up when you finish. Unless this is your major, DONT TAKE.

This guy is so interesting he actually held my attention(being someone who can care less about science related subjects). Hes very enthusiastic and it wears off onto the students. Definately a hard class though but not impossible. just study..take it if you're intelligent&work hard. Very nice guy!
Dr. Arnold's class is completely worth taking (any of them). He's hard but you learn, which is the point of classes. I've taken three classes from him and all have been exceptional learning experiences. If you talk to him about problems or misunderstandings he's very helpful.
One of the BEST anthropology professors at Loyola. ANTH101 is a CHALLENGE but it's definitely possible to get an A. Those who withdrew or failed the class were a bunch of assclowns who thought they could sleep through class, avoid hard core studying and still get an A. DO: ATTEND CLASS, STUDY THE NOTES and VOCAB in the book and KNOW THE STUFF COLD.
ancient worlds was my favorite class this semester, i went to every class and studied hard and did well on the exams. he makes it easy to listen to him and got me really interested in Anthropology, i hope to have him again.
Great professor. Tests are tough but with a little effort you can get an A in the course. Dont memorize definitions, read everything the book and his notes say about each word on his study guide list. Classes are very interesting. I would definitely take another class with him.
This was the worst class i have ever taken! I hated it! Every lecture I thought about leaving the classroom!
boo arnold.
don't know why everyone thinks he is so hard. read the book and study hard with his study guides and you should do well on the tests. know concepts and how they relate or derive from eachother rather than cold facts. interesting teacher who helped me outside of class. enhances the subject and likable lectures.
Extremely interesting class...only problem is the tests are not easy! I read the book and still couldn't get higher than a C on every test. The final is not cumulative, and there are no projects/papers/surprise quizzes. I did not find him very helpful, but he is extremely well educated, funny, and makes an interesting class. Your call!
amazing prof. tests are tough, but it's worth it.
He has interesting stuff to say after all...most of the time. Sometimes you want to sleep but that is just because you've stayed up studying
He makes class intresting because he' so passionate. But, the tests can be really hard. Your grade is based on 5 exams.Make sure you know all of your notes! You have to be able to understand concepts, not just memorize facts. He's a great guy and if you ask him for help he will set aside time for you. I didn't buy the text book and am getting a B-.
dont know y hes rated so low cuz hes awesome, makes class interesting, class attendance not req but passes around sign-in sheet. Go to lectures/take good notes cuz if u do that and do the study guide, then the tests arent that bad at all. Grade based on 5 tests but if u get As on the first 4 you dont even take the final! I would def take him again!
Good teacher. Very clear expectation. Read the chapter, and do everything on the study guide before the test. 5 Exams, drops the lowest. Easy A. STUDY THE STUDYGUIDE. Exams are multiple choice, true false and 2 short answer questions.
This guy is a pretty good teacher. He's not easy, but he's not impossible either. 5 exams, drops one grade. Just follow the study guide and spend a good amount studying and you'll do fine. Class is interesting and he loves what he does and it shows.
arnold is amazing!! hes interesting and if u do the study guide u will get an A. take him!!!
Good teacher. Passionate about the subject. Drops one test. Take his class!!!
Dr. Arnold is a pretty good teacher and takes his time to teach it to you and answers whatever questions that come up. However, if he hasn't gone over all the material before the test, he expects you to still know it from reading the book. He drops one test so that's good but the same information may show up on a later test so beware!
An awesome guy, good teacher. 5 tests, drops lowest. Study guides for every test. Information on tests will overlap into other tests. The only problem is if he doesn't get through all the info in class you have to make sure you get it outta the book.
Professor Arnold is probably one of the nicest and funniest teachers at Loyola. This is a good choice for a history core credit. You take 5 tests, but can drop your lowest. You don't have to show up for the final if you are satisfied with your grade. I didn't try as hard as I should have, but if you study hard for his tests, you should do fine.
Dr. Arnold is one of the best professors I have had at Loyola. He gives study guides with everything that is going to be on the test and the tests are straight forward. He never puts anything on the tests that are not in his lectures, but he does not post the powerpoints online so going to class is to your benefit. RECOMMENDED!
He is a good teacher but his multiple choice questions in the exams can be tough. He drops one exam, however he uses only the letter grade not the %.
great prof! very straight forward, gives study guides and what's on the guide is what's on the test. doesn't post powerpoints, but if you go to class, take notes, and do well on the 1st 4 tests, you get to not have to take the final! he's fantastic and super easy!
Flip is the sweetest dude at Loyola. How could you not like a professor with a ponytail?! Drops your lowest test, extensive study guides, attendance isn't mandatory (but recommended), yada yada yada. He has some of the best examples and stories for his lectures. Tests are a little tough, but I'd still highly recommend this class.
He is awesome! I really didn't care much for this class but prof. arnold really makes the information interesting. Go to class, take good notes, study the study guide and take the exams. You don't have to read the book unless you are confused on a concept. Going to class is really important b/c that makes up most of the exams.
One of the worst professors I've had at Loyola. Claims he wants you to understand "connections" between the material, but just presents long lists of names and facts in class. Tests are extremely specific and 'nit-picky'. I don't know how he gets positive reviews on this site because everyone I've talked to HATES this course/professor...
His ponytail and love for latin music makes him a stone fox in my book. He's entertaining and class is interesting but it is a lot to memorize and there is no extra credit, just tests. He gives you a study guide before each test but its pretty vague. You definitely have study more than just the night before an exam.
This guy is great! One of my favorite profs! Makes sure to take notes from the LECTURE and not just the powerpoints (he does that on purpose). If you do that and (get this) actually read over them more than one before the test, you'll do fine. He actually gives you study guides, the answers to which ARE in his lectures and the book. Do them well.
P. Justin Arnold the III is great. I have taken two classes with him. The tests are hard, but if you do the study guides you can get A's. He is funny and makes class enjoyable.
I think he's great. People complained about how nitpicky he is...but if you do the study guide, read, and go to class (as you should), the tests will be fine. It's not a core class you can just slack off in, but if you try, you will learn a lot of cool stuff.
Worst class taken in my 4 years at Loyola. Didn't covered half of what was on the book which we in result were responsible for memorizing WORD BY WORD. You have to MEMORIZE the book to get a decent grade. I never missed a class, he missed FOUR. If you have other classes to care about and hate professors who DONT care AVOID.
I noticed a lot of complaints here and I would agree with the comment that says if you do the study guides, attend class, etc--you will be fine. He's cool. Interesting material. Just write down what he says as well as book-related material. Seems like a fun/nice guy, though.
I thought that P. Arnold was a great prof. He was really friendly and super passionate about the subject. The tests weren't easy but if you went through the study guide and read the text you should have done fine.
Loved the class. The subject was interesting, and Dr. Arnold is a great lecturer. The tests are tricky but he drops your lowest score. Taking good notes is a must if you want to do well. I would absolutely take another of his classes.
Great class, very interesting, very straightforward. 5 tests and the lowest score is dropped. Go to class, pay attention and take notes, and study from the study guides he gives out and you will be fine. Plus, Flip is the coolest dude ever and he really knows how to rock a ponytail.
Easy class!!! 5 tests including final. lowest one is dropped so if you go to class and are good at memorizing you can skip the final. Self paced lecture class with very helpful lectures. Interesting stuff and if you put in a bit of your effort it is a breeze. Go to lectures! He gives you everything for tests
Worst class I've ever taken in college. I'm in my 5th year, with a 4.0, so I'm not just lazy. Tests are basically impossible to study for, and he doesn't teach you anything in class (just goes off on tangents). Only 4 tests, so if you can't decipher his vague questions, you're pretty much screwed. Great guy, terrible class.
Good class. The professor was funny and helpful to students. Lectures and subject matter were rather interesting. Tests were overall fair.
Never went to class and ended up with a B+. If you want to do better then that, go to class and study notes and study guide that he gives.
300 lvl for a reason. Tons of reading and class discussion on the readings, so you need to keep up. Midterm & final were both 2 papers each. Participation was the only other score. Dr. Arnold is great, always makes class enjoyable. Difficult course, requires a lot of outside commitment. Recommended.
Went to every class, sat in the front row, and took extensive notes. Had to withdraw because on the first two exams, despite studying lectures hard, received C's (and I'm an A student!). He's a great lecturer, but none of that is on the exams. They seem to be purely book-based (which in my opinion is a waste of time).
Such an interesting and enthusiastic guy!! I really love him as a teacher. Exams are mult choice and true false and matching. STUDY everything he puts on the study guides and you will see it all on the exam. I really enjoyed this class, and it was an 8:30 class...so thats saying a lot!
He's lively enough that the material is interesting. Be a diligent note taker - some info he mentions in class isn't necessarily in the book. Know every term he puts on the study guide & you'll do well. I don't put that much effort in & I pull a high B. No homework - just five tests & he drops the lowest.
I really enjoy this guy. From his reggae references to his lush ponytail, you can really tell this guy is CHAF. Anyways love him and his exams really aren't that bad just follow the study guides (most are online).
Archaeology was a really tough class. Material wasn't especially interesting though. He did a good job keeping it entertaining and making the occasional joke. Good professor but not amazing
Wears his passion on his sleeve and it's contagious. No, not everything on the exam will be completely covered in lecture. Yes, provides GENEROUS study guides. Yes, you have to read and occasionally do a Google search to prepare for exams. Projects are evenly spaced, relevant and easy, just do it neatly and take his suggestions. Great prof to know
The lectures don't have anything from the book, yet the exams are all about the book. He is a great person, but not the best professor. Also didn't have any interest in this class, only needed it for my anthropology major
Very hard class bc his grading system doesn't use % only a 4 pt scale- an A-4pts B-3pts etc.5 tests, drops lowest.Helpful w/ ?s on material, not w/personal ?s.Says attendance isn't mandatory-go to class!if u want any consideration if ur grade is borderline.Threatened if u can do well without attending class. Beware.
Worst class I have ever taken at Loyola. Dr. Arnold is a poor lecturer - too quick, PowerPoints lack information, and he spends more time trying to portray himself as hip and relevant. Outside of his lectures I found him insensitive, unapproachable, unhelpful, and dismissive. Save yourself grief and AVOID this instructor!
5 tests, drops the lowest one. Has a really stupid grading system. Read the book if you wanna do well in class. Definitely possible to get A's on the test from only reading the book and going over the notes from a friend or something. Class attendance isn't "mandatory" but it kinda is if you want him to like you and give you a favorable grade.
The first test really caught me off guard. (Only test I ever failed in college). Took his advice and changed the way that I study...instead of just review notes, reading and memorizing, I started making concept maps. Got an A on the second test, and for the last 3 nothing lower than a B. Challenging class, but makes you actually think!
Dr. Arnold is one of my top two favorite profs at Loyola. Not sure where these other comments are coming from- his tests (multiple choice, T/F, and matching) are fine! Take notes in class, look over the study guide, google what you don't know, and you'll be golden. 304 class was more concepts, which provided for many stimulating discussions.
This professor expects you to memorize and repeat facts verbatim. More of a history course. Expect t memorize facts, not learn applicable skills. Will do fine if you love archaeology and bland readings, and useless memorization. Offers no useful advice in office hours- just read and memorize harder.
Professor Arnold is a great lecturer. His tests can be a little difficult if you don't read the book, and without it the best you'll get is a C. He's very informative though, he tells you from the beginning you'll need to read and will even tell you how to study for his exams, providing study guides and tips. Definitely take his class!
He is a good teacher - funny, clear, and helpful. However, the course is demanding for those who are not interested in the subject. Thus, only take this class if you are seriously interested in history BEFORE writing. Your grade is completely dependent on FOUR tests and what you get taken away on them also gets taken from total. Choose wisely.
Never took an ANTH class before this one. Love the guy, he's funny as heck, but he has a ton of material and reading. The tests are tough. Don't expect an easy A. Coming to class is essential, also he doesn't post his powerpoints. You gotta be a fast note taker or else. Our class exam avg. was 70% THAT'S HOW HARD HIS EXAMS ARE.
He's a great guy and explains the material very well. His tests are really tough though they don't seem very tough, but they are, trust me. This class made me push myself and work hard to get better grades. As long as you read the material, take good notes (I can't stress this enough) and talk to him out of class, you shall be fine.
Dr. Arnold is a great person and great professor! He is good at connecting themes and explaining the role of archaeology in interpreting the past. Have to be a vigilant note taker and know all of his examples! Gives a study guide for each test and has a matching, multiple choice and short answer section. Class was 4 exams, all weighted evenly
I did not enjoy Prof Arnold's course. If you are interested in Anthropology, take it. Otherwise the work is pretty much useless, and you will be spending LOTS of time on his class. It is based on 4 test grades which are pretty difficult. Like I said, take this if you love history/anth because otherwise it is unnecessary stress.
Doctor Arnold is a really good guy, and it shows. He is very intelligent, funny, and is interested in his students. Has experience in the field he teaches. His class is pretty straight forward - 4 tests make up the grade, each worth 25%. Non-cumulative. Need to take lots of notes, he covers a lot of material.
This class was hard. Youre graded by four tests only. If youre bad at memorizing facts like me, you wont do well. The professor is very passionate about the subject, lectures are interesting, but test questions are all from the book. Very difficult to study because you cant do flash cards, just memorize the chapters.
it is pretty hard to get an A in this class, but if you are looking for a class where you don't have to do much work this is the one! 5 exams, but only have to take 4 and participation and attendance does not matter. he is super nice and if you take the first 4 and like your grade you don't have to show up to the last few weeks of class
Dr. Arnold may be one of the best professors I have ever had, he is super caring and gives amazing lectures. You don't have to go to class, but I suggest going since the class is graded by 5 exams (you get to drop your lowest one). He is willing it work with you to improve in his class though. Awesome lecture and awesome prof. but difficult class.
This class is interesting and the Dr. Arnold is very entertaining and relatable. However, for a gen-ed the exams are hard! Your grade is entirely based on five exams but your worst one is dropped.
