Taken three classes with him. He's hilarious. Very helpful. Will break things in class, usually accidentally. Screams a lot. Waves a stick around and tends to throw things. Exams are taken straight from notes and books are used only for papers.
I love Daileader. He is amazing and makes medieval history fun. He is so enthusiastic and the way he lectures, you can't help but remember since he marches around weilding a stick and acting things out. He's hilarious.
My favorite professor ever. The only class where I was regularly disappointed when it ended. Not only that, but he's available and helpful after class and goes above and beyond.
I am not interested in history, but Daileader made history very interesting. He is a great professor who captivates his audiences during lectures. I find him a very fair grader and the work load is not excessive. He's an amazing professor!
I really love this professor, he's great! He's very funny, and makes history interesting.
AWESOME!!!
Oh my gosh, this man is sooooo funny. I hate history with a passion, but I looked forward to lecture!!! Definitely take a class with him. He is a fair grader too!!! He is so smart, and you can see his passion for teaching.
Please take Daileader, for the love of God. The man is a genius, PLUS he's engaging, hilariously funny, and young. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. I would take a class about the Yellow Pages if he taught it!
amazing lectures. he knows the material in and out, and makes fun of everything and everyone. there is a decent reading load, but that's the bulk of the effort for class. always worth waking up for.
I love Daileader's teaching style. Although his lectures get a little old by the end of the semester, he is still very clear with the material. He gives a lot of reading, maybe a little too much. However, his class is not hard if you study some.
Daileader is great. Both hilarious and insightful. Look out, he'll make fun of you for answering easy questions. Best class I took my first semester, and really easy if you know anything about history.
If anyone has a chance to take a class with this guy, take it! Don't delay! He was probably the best teacher I had while at W&M. He was my last class of the day and if I skipped all of my other classes, I still made it to this one, no matter what.
Daileader = the greatest. Sometimes makes fun of people in the class, but it's all in good fun. Fascinating lectures, really good feedback on tests and papers, funny yoda-like voice. Recommended.
I love this man. Seriously, BEST PROFESSOR EVER.
Fantastic. His lectures are both hilarious and insightful, and he is always willing to help students out. He's not too difficult to get a B from, but an A requires an intense amount of effort coupled with ideas that will grab his attention. Overall, one of the best teachers in the department.
Daileader is seriously awesome. Engaging, extraordinarily knowledgeable, and as helpful a professor as I've found. It's professors like Daileader that make WM such a great school.
Awesome class and the guy is hilarious. He really knows his stuff too. I haven't turned anything in for a grade yet, but I would still recommend one of his classes to anyone. **Confidential to Daileader: I thought you only looked at this site to check out your colleagues' ratings**
Funniest professor EVER, but also extremely engaging and knowledgadble! Lectures are organized in a clear manner and he never falls behind! I would never skip this class... his jokes and funny voices make it like 50 minutes of enterntainment 3 days a week! What are you waiting for? Take his class!
I took history of the crusades and medieval history I with Prof. Daileader. He's by far one of the most engaging lecturers I've ever seen. I can safely say that I was almost never bored in his class. Most importantly, he makes you think rather than just giving you the answers.
Daileader is awesome - his lectures are like stand-up comedy of medieval Europe, interesting and entertaining at the same time. Even his reading quizes make the class laugh out loud. One of the best classes I have taken at W&M- I had fun and learned a lot too - perfect amount of reading/assignments
Hmm...what can I say about Daileader that hasn't already been said? Except that I sometimes get his name stuck in my head, to the tune of "Dreamweaver." I admit it. But you MUST take a class with him. Do it now!
My favorite professor at W&M (honestly!). Lectures are always interesting (and hilarious to boot). Feedback on papers and exams was very helpful, and he actually forces you to think. Loved every second of it! Take his classes if you get a chance--you won't regret it!
Awesome prof. Took his class at SUNY New Paltz. Wish he had stayed up here. He's engaging and fun to sit and listen to. Fair grader and never boring. Was so great I'm posting this at your school!
I would marry this man if I could. He is the most amazing professor ever, I am so excited to go to his class, its like a free comedic performance three days a week. He is extremely clear, extremely engaging, I learned a lot, and wholeheartedly enjoyed and loved the whole experience.
Daileader is great! His lectures are extremely interesting, and he makes some jokes that are actually pretty funny. He passes out lecture outines and key terms so you're never lost during lecture. He's also very helpful outside of class. Lots of reading, but if you're interested in history, you HAVE to take one of his classes!
Hands down, the best professor at the College. Even if you don't like history, he will make it interesting for you. It's the only class where not only did I look forward to going, but when I saw that it was almost over, I was disappointed. He's very helpful and kind at office hours, too.
WE <3 DAILEADER...seriously the administration needs to pay him whatever it takes to keep him here, tenure him or whatever. He is awesome.
Great professor! Very intertaining lectures full with both information and jokes. Not too much work either. Some light reading and one minor paper. FUN CLASS!
hot, in a weird academic way. hilarious. too bad hes married.
Simply Awesome, if you ever get a chance take a class from him. Lectures are focused and filled with great information and jokes. I feel honored that he teaches at William & Mary, they need to make him the president he is that awesome.
Daileader is a god among men. His lectures were unfailingly funny--and I mean this-man-should-be-a-comedian funny. Class is interesting and insightful, and the TA's are knowledgeable. I took notes in class and read some of the reading and pulled off a B+. My favorite class of an otherwise dull freshman year--too bad he's on sabbatical until fall :(
His class was the highlight of my semester. Oh, to be both smart and hilarious.
Professor Daileader is my hero. He will be yours too if you take this class.
Professor Daileader is hands-down the best professor I have ever had at the College. He is a difficult grader, but fair, and requires his students to have intellectual insight and ingenuity to receive an A. However, he is by far the most entertaining and knowledgeable professor at WaM. Take him...you won't regret it.
Quite possibly my favorite person in the world.
Informative, organized lectures. Paper assignments are well-planned and help a lot with overall understanding in the class (and it's nice to pick your own deadline). Very kind and helpful outside of class! The class will be painful if you don't like offbeat humor and wasting a little time here and there. Definitely a must-take at W&M.
Amazing Teacher!! Even if I skipped all my other classes I would make it to his lectures.
I think Professor Daileader is the single most inspiring, fascinating and faculous professor at W&M. His intellect makes his otherwise mousy appearance transform into wildly hot :) Seriously, if you could take only one class at the College, it should be his. He is, in a word, phenomenal.
I took this "easy" class I had already tested out of because I heard he was so interesting. And he didn't disappoint. Insightful and wildly entertaining. Who else would consider cultural progress in terms of pants?
I. Love. This. Man. I took 112 with him, loved it, and came back for the senior colloquium. He did not disappoint. One of my favorite professors at the College. Tons of reading, but the class discussion is SO worth it. Ripping apart other historians has never been so fun. I have never laughed so much in a class before!
This man is awesome! His class is so entertaining... I actually look forward to lecture which does not happen often. He is hilarious but is also extremely intelligent (apparantly he knows upwards of 6 languages). His class is very informative. Exams aren't too bad as long as you pay attention and do the reading. TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!
Daileader's lectures are hilarious but that is the only positive aspect to him. His readings are ridiculously long. If one did all of the reading listed in his syllabus one would read close to 200 pages a week! His first and finals exams are tough. If you're interested and already know Medieval history take this class--otherwise keep away!
funniest professor i have had. wish i had gone to lecture more. readings are a bit intense but if you just skim them before exams you'll be fine. i did it and came out of it with a B.
best lectures at w&m! loved going to class, he keeps your attention up and isn't boring to listen to. very cool guy
One of the best professors I've ever had. Funny, interesting, great guy. Lots of reading, but they aren't that bad. His lectures and his personality are completely worth taking the class for. I LOVE THIS GUY!
this is a fantastic class. he makes crusades come alive with interesting, funny lectures. don't need to read any textbooks. however, he gives weekly short, easy, but annoying 5 question reading quiz every week on primary source readings--but 80+ can be easily attained with a quick look-thru. arguably the best professor at this school.
Hilarious. Had the class laughing hysterically throughout his lectures. Sadly the lectures don't help much for the exams. LOTS of readings. TAs lead the discussions and grade your essays. There's an essay exam, a quiz-type exam, a paper and a final (2 essays).
Awesome history professor! Lectures were engaging, funny, and very informative. Tests were challenging, but not impossible. Discussion texts were interesting (mostly). One paper not horrible; do the first one and save yourself a lot of trouble. Would highly recommend this class!!!!
He is amazingly funny and intelligent, and makes the Middle Ages come alive in his lectures.
I'm listening to his Learning Company tapes. Fantastic. I was never interested in history and now I can't stop thinking about what happened in our world before I got here!
If you get the chance, take a class with this man. He is hilarious and his lectures, though they are large, are dynamic and fun. In Hist 192 you do have a lot of reading, but most of the sources are very interesting. You have a discussion session with a phD student. I highly highly recommend this class and this professor.
Funny, funny guy. Not too hard. Study for final and write 2 decent papers.
Hilarious person who loves to teach in multiple voices. I wish he taught other classes that I could take.
Professor Daileader is one of the best teachers I have ever encountered, in college or elsewhere. His lectures are HILARIOUS, informative, and never boring. Though the class was a large lecture style, I never once skipped because he is such a great person to hear lecture. Take any class that he is teaching; he will not disappoint.
Excellent, compelling, funny, smart, mesmerizing, open-minded.
Amazing. Best professor I have had at W&M. He keeps everybody interested and laughing throughout the hour. You wind up learning more than you think you will and not even realizing he's teaching you, half the time it seems like stand up comedy.
Best professor I've had yet. He is hilarious! Even though I was interested in history before I took this class, I can easily see this class holding the attention of someone who would usually not be interested. Lots of reading, quizzes in the discussion sections, two papers, and a final. So, a moderate workload but actually not that bad.
Somehow he makes a HUGE lecture fun and interesting. The class is two days of lecture and one day of discussion with a TA. Your experience there depends on the person- I like mine but I've heard horror stories of bad ones. But Daileader is really good! 2 papers, final, and reading quizzes during discussion.
Easily one of the best professor I've had so far, and I'm not even a history major. The class has a fair amount of work but you will never be bored in lectures.
I'm gonna be honest and say I didn't attend this class as much as I should've. Daileader was funny as could be, but the shear easiness of the material kept me wanting to skip it. The real highlight for me were the weekly discussion sections on Fridays. They were a lot of fun. I didn't really read a lot for the class and still got a B.
Daileader is awesome. Although the huge lecture is not ideal and the discussions can be awkward (not a whole lot of participation in mine at least), Professor Daileader is hilarious, engaging, and clarifies the material. Doing all the reading is helpful but not necessary to get a good grade. Exam was reasonable, papers were not too bad.
I am not a history major, but I am so glad that I took his Crusades class. He is extremely helpful in office hours and is extremely down to earth when you talk one on one, but also has a hilarious style in lecture. I hate to miss class because he is so engaging. Definite must-take.
I took this class because everyone raves about it. I didn't really like it though. And he is kind of a jerk on his comments on grading papers. He only said negative things about it, and yet gave me a B. I'd hate to see his comments on a bad paper. I got a B- on the second one, and he slammed it even harder. Not what I expected.
LOVE Daileader! He was named one of the best 300 profs in the country, and its easy to see why. Funny, engaging, brilliant man. His lectures are great and the work load's not bad at all - read a short book a week, take a quiz on it, write 3 papers for the term. It's not hard to do well if you do the reading and coming to class is fun!
Hilarious; best lecturer in the history department. If you're a history major (or even if you're not) try to take a class with him, because his lectures are a sight to see
He will make you want to come to class.
Daileader is hands down the best lecturer at the College. You must take at least one class with him.
Daileader is the best lecturer I've had in my two years of being here. He makes history less about memorization and more about the "why this matters" and "so what?" He is extremely charismatic and overall a great professor who clearly cares about his students and history. Even if you just need it for a GER, I definitely recommend this course to all
The lectures are phenomenal! He's an engaging professor. 2 papers, weekly discussion quizzes and 1 final... Be prepared to read and take notes! His syllabus includes a guide for the discussion. Use the HRC at Blair and NOT the WRC to help with you papers.
Already did this GER? Don't need this for your major? Think you're a person who likes to skip class? I don't care. Take this class and go every day. You'll want to. Why? Because an hour with Daileader is more entertaining than an hour of free time. The guy is the absolute bomb. The class is a lot of work (it's history!) but it's worth it.
Oh my gosh, Daileader is amazing! Definitely my favorite professor so far. The class is a good amount of work, but Daileader makes it interesting. You will want to show up to class simply because he's absolutely hilarious! I would recommend taking it with him (only him) to everyone, whether you need it or not.
Loved his class and I'm taking another with him next semester. However, your grade largely depends on your TA. There are differing expectations for the essays between the various TAs. For the amount of effort I put in I expected an A but got an A-. You shouldn't get less than an A- if you put in the work (which includes a lot of reading).
Amazing! As long as you DON'T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST FEW WEEKS to do the essays, and you do all the readings, you are guaranteed a good grade. He is hilarious, and one of the best professors I have ever had. His class has been one of the standout positives of my time at the College. Want to take again. You don't need the Madden book for this class.
Daileader is the one of the best professors I've had in 7 semesters of college here at W&M. He is hilarious and gives awesome lectures. The only drawback of this course is he makes you read a lot. But for me, I looked forward to reading because the subject material is so interesting.
I love this man
One of the top tier profs here at W&M. Funny lectures, engaging and cares ab students' performances. Take this class. Only criticism is that nothing from his lectures are available online- he basically improvs his entire material. Skip class & you won't know what is talked about.
Absolutely one of the best professors at WM, inspirational. Interesting, funny lectures. I was very sad to have missed a class of his, because they are amazing
Daileader is a great professor. There are weekly reading quizzes (which can be a bit tedious / oddly specific) and three overall papers, but overall the class is straightforward and fun. Daileader is a great lecturer and makes an interesting subject even more interesting.
Prof. Daileader is an amazing lecturer and truly an intelligent guy. His class required some boring readings but he makes up for it in his lectures. He cracks a lot of jokes and keeps the class lively. Would definitely take a class with him again.
Professor Daileader is my favorite professor at William & Mary. This man is truly an expert in the subjects he teaches, and his lectures are never boring as he is very entertaining. It isn't an easy A and there is some reading each week, but he is fair and always willing to meet outside of class. Also, he gives the best feedback on every paper!
Best professor I've had so far. He's hilarious and he knows how to present the material clearly in class. The readings are compelling and the workload is not heavy at all. A must-have for any history major.
Daileader is the funniest professor I've ever had! He always makes a joke of some sort and it really makes class enjoyable. He teaches by using a 5 slide PPT but has the lecture's contents memorized (which was very impressive). Note: I read more in 3 weeks in this class than all of high school. I HATE reading, but took the class for a C200
Best professor
Daileader is a great profesor who really challenges you to think. Be prepared to put in a couple of hours for the reading every week but the discussions are always engaging and he is a fair grader.
The man. The myth. The legend. You have to take a Daileader class at WM. Amazing and funny lectures. Rolling deadlines for papers and no tests. The reading quizzes are usually easy if you do the reading. This man is a true gem. You just have to experience him to understand the craziness.
Rolling deadlines, easy grader, and very informative lectures. Easy to do well if you put in efforts.
Professor Daileader is an absolutely amazing professor. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had, and you should definitely try to take one of his classes.
If you can take a class with Professor Daileader, please do it. The way he runs his classroom is so fun and makes you think more critically about everything. He gives great feedback on papers and is really entertaining in class.
Utterly hilarious. Lectures are fabulous. Not only that, they're chock-full of content and tell a clear story, based on themes in global history. His syllabus includes all of the outlines, paper topics, and discussion questions for weekly readings, which do take a little time, but quizzes are pretty basic. Don't procrastinate papers. Take it!
Professor Daileader is a true gem. He's absolutely hilarious and his lectures are amazing, both in content and humor. The class is a LOT of reading and there's a reading quiz/discussion section every Friday so you have to do it, but if you're into history it's not too bad. Professor Daileader made me want to be a history major -- he's that good.
Daileader is what all professors should be. His lectures are awesomely entertaining as well as informative. He does not get lost, or wander on rabbit trails. There are three papers, one of which is your final. the first two are based on the readings; the final is on a historical debate. The rest of the grade is based on weekly reading quizzes.
The assigned readings for each week's quizzes are stuff that will make you want to fall asleep, he makes corny jokes throughout class that got old 10 minutes into the first day. The class is also based around 100 minutes of lecture each week but he has taken advantage of online classes and has assigned over 200 minutes of video lectures per week.
Daileader is one of those professors you have to take a class with if you're in the history department. He's super knowledgeable (we read his book in medieval history) but also very good about explaining concepts! Lectures are in a storytelling format so very engaging. Only thing is his sense of humor can be a little cringey at times
He is a very nice professor! I normally am not fond of history but I did enjoy this class. There is a lot of reading though. With the move online he did make lectures a lot longer but the final exam became non-cumulative and T/F so I appreciated that
Even though this semester was a bit unorthodox, Professor Daileader managed to be a fantastic lecturer the whole time. While in class he was detailed and kept people on their toes, and he managed to be the same for distance learning. If you have the chance to take one of his classes, definitely do it.
Just the best. I looked forward to his lectures every week, as well as the discussion sections. Reading heavy but I never came across a dull piece. Be sure to do the readings, the weekly quizzes add up. Two papers, both around 6-7 pages, were very doable. Final was changed due to the apocalypse. He is a very prompt, caring, and funny guy.
One of the best professors at W&M. He bent over backward to make online class fair to everyone in the class. Very funny.
The best lecturer I have had. He is very funny and engaging! I honestly loved listening to his lectures! Does a great job introducing parts of history less often covered! A lot of reading but from a diverse set of sources which was interesting! My discussion section was lackluster but I loved his lectures!
Great professor and very funny! Definitely a lot of reading required, but you learn a lot in this course!
Daileader is a good person, love him. But, HIST 240 online is very difficult because he doesn't meet with you outside of 1 class a week and his grading criteria is not clear at all. He wasn't informative about what would be on the exam as well. Doesn't discuss lectures. I would take another class with him if it was in person, but avoid him online.
I took 192 online this semester, so I never interacted with Prof. Daileader himself, just my TA. Daileader's lectures were kept relatively short and always contained little jokes that were quite entertaining. Lots of reading every week, and a quiz every week, too. All the graded tests and quizzes are true/false which is kind of difficult.
There is quite a bit of reading. Some weeks had around 120 pages, while later weeks had 3 or so 20 page readings approaching finals. Most were pretty interesting. It was very important to do them well as weekly reading quizzes and class participation constituted 40% of our grade. Professor Daileader gave interesting lectures around 150min+ weekly.
Course was asynch except for 50min discussion session with the TA p/w. TAs do most of the grading, and they're the ones who we interacted with the most. Final grade is broken into 5 equal parts. Pros: Prof breaks lectures into shorter vids, is very engaging and funny Cons: A LOT of reading (though manageable! most are interesting) Would take again!
He is well organized, funny, and knowledgeable. Unfortunately, I wanted to like this class, but he assigned around 200 minutes of lecture each week when there should have only been 100. That being said, I'm sure he's a great choice for in-person, but online was exhausting. Luckily, I liked my TA for the discussion group, and he was super friendly.
Professor Daileader gives some of the best lectures Ive had in college so far-he makes all of the information interesting and has a great sense of humor. There are 2 easy papers along with weekly reading quizzes and a final exam(essay and t/f test). Participation in the TA session is also important. Take his class, you wont regret it!
I am biased (he is my advisor), but Daileader is awesome. The Crusades was a really interesting class, and while the asynchronous format meant only one live session a week, it was good. The readings were super long (and with weekly quizzes, you needed to read), but the final was 50 T/F questions. Learned a lot, the course lived up to the hype.
Prof Daileader is extremely easy going and is a great guy in general. You have to read a book a week for weekly quizzes, but it is manageable and besides that the only graded assignments are two papers (which will be on books you had to read for the weekly quiz so it's also manageable) and the final. The final is also an essay which I appreciate
Professor Daileader's Crusades class is fantastic. His lectures fit perfectly into the outlines he provides on the syllabus, and he is funny and personable. I would recommend this class for every history major, but if you don't plan on majoring in history only take it if you have an interest in the topic.
An amazing professor and I cannot recommend taking him enough. The class flew by every time and he helped me take up even more interest in history. If you are on the fence about taking him, please give him a chance.
You will read extremely long Old English books about the Crusades for this course. If that doesn't interest you don't take this class. There are weekly quizzes about them so if you don't read them you fail the quizzes. But lectures were engaging and you could tell he wanted to everyone to do well on the papers. He's great!
Dr Daileader is a really fun and engaging lecturer! The readings could be long and tedious, but the quizzes weren't hard. He usually put one or two silly answers so by process of elimination you could answer correctly. He was a generous grader for papers (2 papers, 1 final paper, weekly quiz). Highly recommend for ppl interested in medieval europe!
LOVE Daileader. He is so kind, gives thorough feedback, is accessible, and gives some of the best lectures I've ever had in the history department. He made a topic I knew nothing about interesting, and made me want to learn more about medieval history! He is hilarious in class and is very engaging. Clearly cares for his students and knows his stuff
Daileader is fun! There are a lot of readings, some better than others, and you need to read them for the weekly quiz, but honestly, the quizzes weren't that hard and the readings were mostly manageable and interesting. Lectures were good, and the rest is just three papers. Fun class, just probably don't take it if you don't like history.
Daileader is above and beyond the best professor I have had at William and Mary, I went into my sophomore spring declared history and IR (with no advisor) and within two weeks I asked Daileader to be mine for history. He is absolutely hilarious, his lectures are engaging and so full of knowledge. Get ready to read tho, skipping is not an option.
The Crusades was a very fun class! Daileader's lectures were amazing and very informative. However, he is a very tough grader for the papers you write in this class. You have to be great at taking your own notes, since the lectures are a bit all over the place. If he wasn't such a tough grader I would take him again, but overall you learn a lot.
Daileader is a nationally ranked professor and it shows. He knows his stuff and can pretty much answer any question you could have. 100+ pages a week and weekly quizzes, but otherwise not much work. This guy is hilarious and I HIGHLY suggest his classes regardless of major. Lectures are clear, prof. is accommodating, nothing bad to say. 10/10
Super long readings. Weekly reading quizzes asking for direct quotes from the 300-page text. Super energetic but it can be a lot. Good lecturer that's why people like him.
Professor Daileader is an amazing COLL 150 professor- he gives in-depth feedback on papers, and even manages to make grammar fun to learn. Though he assigns ~140 pages of reading per week, skimming gets you enough information to participate in class discussions. Coming from a STEM person, I def recommend to take this class for a COLL150.
This guy is the GOAT. So funny and so so smart. If you can endure the gauntlet of Lawrence Stone you will crush this class, learn how to be a better writer, and have fun while doing it. Daileader is incredibly helpful and caring. I love this guy so much man.
Daileader is an incredible professor who genuinely cares about his students, wants them to succeed, and helps them to improve their writing. Yes, there is a lot of reading, but class discussions are interesting, enjoyable, and always funny. He is easily accessible outside of class, and his feedback on papers is always super detailed and helpful!!
Professor Daileader makes the Crusades fascinating with engaging lectures. While the readings can be dense, using study tools like unstuckstudy helps make the workload manageable. Tough grader, but you'll learn a ton.
Amazing professor! Class discussions were fun and made me excited to come to class.
Daileader is the BEST! Highly recommend taking his coll 150. Class discussions are engaging and make the reading worthwhile (even though it is a ton of reading), and his feedback on papers was genuinely helpful. Daileader puts effort into getting to know his students and improving their writing.
I took The Crusades last semester with little background knowledge, and I can't recommend Daileader highly enough. His lectures are engaging, inclusive, and hilarious—you'll love coming to class. There is a good amount of reading, but Daileader is accessible and will help you manage all assignments! Really made this a rewarding class to take.
I took his Crusades class first semester freshman year, and I remember being so scared to write my first college paper, but he instantly helped me organize my thoughts. He's truly caring and wants his students to succeed. The class is definitely focused on the Western perspective of the Crusades, but he goes so in-depth. Plus, he's hilarious!
Daileader is very energetic and his lectures are great. There's a fair amount of reading each week but they're pretty interesting. Paper feedback is good.
If you aren't interested in medieval history, do not take this class. Unbelievable amount of weekly readings which were very boring and hard to understand. They're also required bc each reading has a quiz. He is very nice as a professor and you can tell he cares about his students. Hard to reach during weekends and grading criteria is unclear
