you never get D in his class
Very Good Teacher
She is so out there!LOL
Good teacher, well educated, smart, and helpful
Obsessed with Africa and archaeology. I don't like his teaching style.
Found him very interesting and willing to work with you. Does relate a lot to Africa tho.
A little too much emphasis on Africa.
Any of this Professors Anthro classes are all about Him,Him and MORE Him so be prepared to sit in their every day to learn and hear about HIM. If your over 24 his class takes alot of nonsence tolerance about him
Very informative and experienced. Exams not too difficult, just take good notes. Also gives enough extra credit to make grades up. Overall, I would say he is a great professor and I would recommend him!
He's a good teacher, who is a fountain of useless knowledge! Fun stories about Africa, and his adventures. Although...I think he's had malaria one too many times!
This Prof is well educated for his field, but archeology and anthropology don't exactly grab me for excitement. He talks a lot about himself and a lot about Africa, but when it comed down to it he is very helful and willing to work with you.
no coments. seriously!
good professor. he has a lot of experience in africa so you will hear about his exploits there. very knowledgeable in archaeology. test aren't to hard and the papers you right are short 7-10 pgs. would take any class he teaches.
argh... had a really hard time with this class... i got a good grade who knows how. he'll only really like you if you are already into anthropology... he's kinda boring... makes lame jokes... heh
DR De Boring makes anyone who is non-BASAR VERY sleepy. Do not take after lunch! By the way all t/f quest. equal FALSE. dont forget all of the above ALWAYS.
Talks a lot about Africa, and lectures are pretty boring. Tests are pretty easy. Helpful teacer. Would take his class again, as long as it was before lunch
LECTURES ARE LENGTHY AND SLOW. PROF. IS NICE BUT DOES TALK ALOT ABOUT AFRICA. THE BOOKS HE USES ARE PRETTY GOOD THOUGH. PAPERS ARE SHORT AND HE GRADES THEM LIGHTLY.
Boring. Will stop his lecture to stare at anyone who walks in late. Tests are fairly easy if you study for them. Lectures are conducive to note-taking. Good story-teller.
He is the best!
The Physical Anth. class that he taught has to be one of the best classes I have taken so far. If you pay attention during lecture and you read the study guides there is no way you should get below an A. He curves the grades on the median class score!
Dr D, is a wonderful teacher and if you want to learn anything about archaeology/anthropology both in California and Africa he is the best teacher at Palomar College to teach you this!
Professor is funny because he tries so hard 2 be funny and isnt.. tests R based on his lectures and he provides detailed study guides, so its not hard if U actually try. offers extra credit and grades fair, Overall a good class. pre warning: HE IS GREATLY ANNOYED WITH TARDINESS...and he shows it.
I wish he taught every one of my classes at Palomar. If you have to take this class for credit to transfer, look no further than Dr. D. Show up every day (ON TIME) and you will do just fine.
I have aquired a deep admiration for this professor. He is the best teacher I know.
I had this prof in 1998, and he is still the only teacher at Palomar that I remember. My interest in Anthropology as a major began with him those many years ago. :)
I think this class is very interesting. He is a super cool guy, too... If I could live a second life, I would do all of the things he has done. He has a ton of knowledge to offer. I really respect him.
LECTURES: Random, scattered, disorganized, *very* dry & boring. EXAMS: must read on ure own 2 get good grade. PET PEAVES: He'll embarrass you VERY MUCH by staring @ U & saying smthing rude if U: cough, move chair, need rstroom. Unnecessarily unforgiving & in****ing @ times. Nice guy outside class
It was a good class, he is just unorganized. You do have to study stuff on your own, but its not that hard to get a good grade. Lots of interesting stories, and subject. He knows this subject very well.
Awsome teacher! If you bother to pay attention in class and take notes the tests are simple. Ask him an involved question via email you get great extra credit. I would take all of his classes even though they dont apply to my major! He has a real love for the subject hes teaching! My favorite professor at Palomar ever! D/E all the above
EXTREMELY KNOWLEDGABLE! He has done so much with his life, it encourages me to do more with mine. He is not that organized, but nothing that would effect your grade.I got a B+ in his class. He gives extra credit. I learned a lot!
He has his corny jokes and his opinionated lessons but he makes the subject interesting and is very good at showing you the intricacies of an idea. He's an excellent teacher. I highly recommend his class. You'll like it.
He's a biggot
Very helpful--if you don't understand something, he's sure to clarify it for you. His is the first Phys Anth class I haven't conked out in!
he is a very cool teacher - after working all day and then coming to class it was really cool to have a teacher who was actually really interested in the subjct he is teaching - Lots of corny jokes that weren't really funny, but kept it intertaining - I would highly recommend anyone to take his classes.
His only purpose for class is to get you to believe in what he believes. So I guess if you are an athiest and place your faith in science, then you will probably like him. If you believe anything else, don't take his class or your will become very irritated by his objectivity.
Very good instructor. His class is only easy if you study. An hour a day is more than enough. He isnt bias. When you take an Anthropology class what you learn will go against most religious beliefs (DA DA DUHHH!!). Question your religion, question the science, but dont be closeminded and be angry with the professor. What are you thinking?
He is extremely closeminded to anything else but his own beliefs. I think the person two below me meant that he is subjective, not objective. and he is a biggot.
De Barros is the most passionate teacher ive had. The tests are not hard if you study. Hes worth taking.
De Barros is a great teacher. Just make sure you attend class, dont be late, and you should do fine. He teaches right out of his study guide and so are all the awnsers to all the tests. No need to buy the book.
He's a good teacher, I fell alseep a few times... he doesn't care LOL! Oh and most of the answers to his tests are "ALL THE ABOVE" Or "BOTH C or B" something like that. He's cool, and he can make the class fun if your open minded and not a dick or a ****.
He's a very passionate and knowledgeable about anthropology. His lectures are interesting and fast paced. He urges you to think beyond what you normally believe.
Perhaps the most far left wing professor on campus. If you are an advocate of academic freedom and dislike indoctrination, do not take him. A secular-progressive who attempts to get you to think exactly as he does. I love Anthropology and he was knowledgeable, but 40% of your class time will be devoted to his world views.
Very knowledgeable & clarifying in his lectures. You'd be insulted if you're Christian or Republican. Luckily, I'm neither. His classes are interesting, but make sure you're classes equal less than 12 credits and pay VERY close atention to names and dates. This class is like taking history rather than anthropology. Mostly names and dates.
Excellent Professor.
Great Professor. Passionate about his work and is very interesting. For me, I went into the class not really knowing what to expect. By the end of the course I got a new perspective.
He is a very good teacher. Focus on studyguides! Seriously.. book is not needed really. Just come on time, know his pet peeves, and you'll be fine. =)
His tests are really easy But but he deducts 30 pionts from your grade if your always late. I was taking 6 classes when I had his class and I got a B, so if you love people who bore you to death, put you to sleep, and hate when you walk in late then your in luck becuase he's your man.
Have taken several classes with this professor. Lots of puns. Don't really need the book, but he picks a lot of interesting books when you do need them. Essays can be difficult but the tests are easy. Never gotten anything less than a B from him...You would have to do NOTHING in order to fail. Understanding and willing to work with students.
Great professor! Very helpful and will answer ANY question you give him. Will take a break if he see's that his students need them. You must attend class! This is not the professor to miss class on, as he covers lots of material in short amounts of time.
He can be boring, but still he thinks outside the box and does get you thinking... which makes me wonder if my brain got tired from thinking too much. He is a good teacher, tests are easy and you'll enjoy.
Good Professor. Not "anti-Christian." Read the study guides and you'll be just fine. Nice guy.
Nice guy. Not "anti-Christian" and a good teacher. Remember to read the study guides.
Great teacher with lots of knowledge of anthropology. Has a real passion for it. He pretty much does everything he can to help you. His syllabus explains everything, he gives very detailed study guides which you just study and should be good for the tests. Only thing is, there are only 3 exams so there is a lot of material on each test!
This is a real college class, he is an amazing professor. He is so intelligent and fair, I wish he could teach all of my classes. I learned so much from him and I couldn't wait to get to class everyday! Some say he's boring, but everything he says is great information I loved every minute of it. I love him!
He is so passionate about Anthropology and it really shines through in his teaching. Gives great study guides. Extremely fair. This professor is a true genius and always interjects with his vast personal experiences as well as knowledge he gains from books he reads on the side. One essay but it wasn't hard. My favorite professor at Palomar!
Dr.D is if not the best teacher I have ever had, pretty darn close to it. This guy is extremely intelligent,we like to call him the walking encyclopedia because he pulls info out of his head with astounding accuracy. He is also very nice.Chill with tardiness. Also lets you turn in assignments and projects late.Grades really easy. Dr. D = LAID BACK!
One of the greatest teachers I've had at Palomar. Is very clear when giving lectures and his study guides are very easy to follow. He's very fair grades on a curve and is very helpful.
Awesome instructor, anthropologist, and person. de Barros uses great material. Print the study guides out and fallow in class, EASY. Two book report papers need to be typed, but they are on two interesting books and you only need to read about 4 chapters per book IF you can stop there
Personally, I don't think cultural anthropology is anything extraordinary (my opinion both before and after the course). But I signed up for the course simply because I wanted nothing but excellent professors (and I wasn't disappointed). Go to class, do all the work, and don't be afraid to mark "all of the above" a lot!
What a 'punny' professor!!! Love him and his jokes. This class is informative and great fun. Dr. D is helpful and knowledgeable. Not much bookwork.
Looking back, he was the only teacher who was both very interesting and really boring at the same time. Either way you'll learn A LOT from his class and his tests are REALLY HARD... If you don't mark All The Above on most of the questions ha ha! Good Professor and interesting.
He's maybe one of the smartest instructors in Palomar College and maybe in san diego couty when it comes to Anthropology...He knows everything by heart(atleast that's how he sounds like)teaches current matter and have no problem mentioning the pros and cons when it comes to some theories.
He is funny! He has really lame, corny jokes but they are pretty funny. Def gets side tracked a lot but for the most part he stays on course. Def need to pay attention to his lectures b/c that is what you get tested on. Books are not required, past w/o reading them. Best part, he has control of the class, does not get out of control which is nice!
If you're interested in Anthropology he's an excellent teacher. If you're not interested (like me), it'll probably be pretty boring. He's a reasonable guy though and I respect him a lot. It wasn't too difficult but I'm glad I'm through the class.
He's a great teacher but hmm not very organized. Like he talks a lot that you dont know what to study for the exams plus the exam study guides arent that useful. I passed the class w. a C+ didnt really try i already got credit for it so didnt bother that much, but he's a very great teacher opens your eyes a lot!& once in a while he likes to show off
I took the Evolution, Religion, And Science class just to expand my knowledge. I fell in love with the class and Dr. D was very VERY helpful. He is not always on time to class, but he will always answer any questions you may have through email. I think he is a passionate teacher, especially with the field of Anthropology.
I took three of his classes. He the best professor I have ever had and I'm now at UCSD. I loved his classes and I admire him very much. He is really helpful and smart and I wish I could take his classes again! I looked forward to his classes and I never missed one!
Dr. D is a GREAT teacher! he is extremely helpful and loves it when students ask questions. his tests are fairly easy, you don't need the text book, just read his tutorials and practice quizzes and you'll pass the class no problem. and DONT hesitate to put D. ALL OF THE ABOVE on his tests!
He has study guides all over his online resources, he grades super easy, and the material on the test is known with plenty of time to study. If you don't get an A in this class, you are doing it wrong. If you can stand his political agenda (far left) ramblings, it's a very easy class. I highly recommend doing the extra credit.
Dr de Barros is very knowledgeable when it comes to Anthropology, not politics. He has a far left liberal agenda that he push onto his class, both on study guide and exams. It is very annoying. If you are religious do NOT take his class. However he is very knowledgeable when it comes to Anth. His grading system makes the class very easy.
Dr. de Barros is a very intelligent man and knows a lot about anthropology but he is extremely liberal and shares his political opinions to the class OFTEN. The class is pretty easy if you thoroughly read the study guides but if you are religious or easily offended by radical left-wing politics..stay away!
Ignore what people are saying about his "agenda." He is extremely knowledgeable in the field of Anthropology and any fields that happen to interconnect (i.e. all). The only time he brings up his own political viewpoint is when it is applicable to the subject at hand, and I've never seen him force his opinions on anyone else. Great professor.
very interesting teacher but lectures are very boring especially early in the morning. he knows what he is talking about and tests are very easy.
This instructor DOES have a far-left wing agenda that he brings to class and even puts on his exams. He is very knowledgeable in Anthropology, NOT politics! Very annoying in that regard. Overall, a very easy A. You don't need to buy a book for his class either, a big plus. Just know you are going to have to tune out a lot of far left nonsense.
Dr. D tells it like it is. Very interesting, very passionate, very knowledgeble. Those who dont agree with his views are clearly ignorant and uneducated in the topics at hand. Listen to this Anthropological Sage and your academic journey will blossom beautifully. Lots of extra credit, if you want an A, you have many oppurtunities to receive one.
Difficult for a 100 level class, but worth it. Very knowledgeable. He can come across as intimidating and arrogant at times, but if you stick with it you'll realize he is just passionate about anthropology and has devoted much of his life to it. Come to class, pay attention to lectures, and study the guides and you'll be fine.
Dr. Debarros is an amazing man that is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his work. He is very particular about classroom etiquette.( too much sometimes) Overall, I learned a lot from his class not only about Anthro but many other things. I highly recommend taking his class.
I took the class in the summer. I received B's on the tests and did all of the homework assignments, but received a C in the class. I was confused so i emailed debarros, and he replied saying i missed 3 classes and did no extra credit, so that's the grade i get. So go to class, and do the extra credit! Otherwise, you may be surprised!
I took the class during the summer. Very knowledgible professor. If you do the required work, attend class and complete the extra credit and you should get a decent grade. Though his tests are multiple choice and true/false, they are not easy. Whatever you do DON'T TEXT MESSAGE IN CLASS, you will be kicked out of class. I got an A for the course.
All this guy did was talk about himself and his experience in Africa. Very boring, not anthropology, didn't take any notes, repetitive lectures
Terrible! Wastes the majority of class lecture time going off on tirades about his political ideologies that have no real relevance to the course. Thinks "Al Gore" has scientific merit-no im not kidding! Pushes his radical left wing agenda on students instead of teaching the subject. He also does not welcome debate or challenges to his "beliefs".
His class is not hard, at all! It is very simple: come to class, listen to the lecture, get a study guide for the exams, and study. There are two required papers: a essay and a term paper on two different books. Not hard. Very knowledgeable but don't use electronics in class. He gets pissed!
A very intelligent man, but not the best teacher. He goes on tangents, which is really annoying when you're behind on material. He even snapped at a student who was asking a question. Not okay. It's not a hard class, but it's one that you dread... especially when it's 2.5 hours long. Just a forewarning. Oh, and I didn't need the book.
Go in with an open mind, he'll go on tangents sometimes but I think that's because he's so passionate about science in general. At least he backs his opinions up with solid arguments, which I can respect. Just study and you'll be fine, the great thing is that there aren't any surprises about his material, you just gotta do it.
This class was not difficult at all. He is very clear about what he expects and makes all of the material to succeed in the class available on blackboard.
Pretty good class! i got a B and never opened a book. Listen to the lectures and read study guides. He goes on rants here and loves to say things are "bulls%&%" but the class is pretty easy...plus there is a ton of extra credit! little boring at times.
Very passionate about ANTHRO Has two 6 and 8 page papers. Test are pretty easy as long as you follow along in class and read the study guides! Goes on tangents but does mean well. Cares about students grades. Has 3 tests. OVERALL EASY CLASS. p.s. HE is also very passionate about Africa! fyi
Excellent professor! His silly jokes actually help things stick (like it or not). His tests are overly simple with minor studying and seeing his pattern. During the summer, it's solely exams and the tutorials (even easier). I never really needed help, but he was always willing to speak to me after class on related matter.
Took his summer biological anthropology class. Not the easiest material, lots of things to memorize, but it's not too bad. He's quite reasonable--as long as you show up consistently, he'll be generous with rounding your final grade. He also has some interesting political stories, so his lectures are kinda fun. Just keep an open mind in there!
Great teacher who loves what he does. His courses feature a lot of information so it's not an easy grade but how passionate he is about the subject makes it an interesting class. He does like the sound of his own voice though and usually will go off on political tangents, but that's the only bad part about the class.
Ok, let's start yes he's a cool professor. He has some issues with arriving to class on time. He is passionate about what he's teaching, he takes it serious and feels you should too, so don't use your cell or talk in class. His exams are pretty easy as long as you follow his study guides, text, and tutorials. Be in class! If not email him.
He's nice and friendly. The class is simple - all you do is listen to him the whole time, but it can get really boring. He gives all the notes and study guides online. 2 essays and 3 tests. Didn't use the book at all
VERY EASY teacher. Probably studied 10 minutes for each exam and ended getting As on all but one. Just an easy lecture class. He is really boring though. Makes you do a 6 page paper at the end. DO NOT procrastinate for it. Gives out some extra credit as well.secret: on a test if there as an "all of the above" option, it is most the correct answer
This professor is fantastic. He knows the material very well and is capable of answering practically any question you pose. He provides a great amount of extra study materials and lets the students know exactly what they need to study for. Also has a great sense of humor. I highly recommend any course he offers.
This professor is very close-minded and old fashion. Every lecture, he will mention something related to him and Africa and will try to crack corny jokes to make the class laugh. He is very hypocritical at times by getting extremely angry at tardy students but he, himself, often shows up a little late. At times, he also has quite the temper...
If you don't mind a very dry and boring lecture then suffer through it and take his easy exams. There is zero class participation. He talks the entire time and usually refers to his experience in Africa 50% of each lecture. Very unfortunately I do not (as an A student) feel I learned what I thought I would.
He will spend most of the time talking about Africa. Very knowledgeable about it. Learned a lot more about Africa than Anthro. If the test were on Africa alone I probably would've Aced his class. He's a good teacher, I was just a bad student who wouldn't study. Tests are based on his very detailed study guides. He's kinda boring though.
Barros is very smart and loves to talk. Be prepared for long lectures and no overload on homework which is great. He has like 3 tests, and two essays. Show up on time, ask questions, readdo the study guides and you will pass. If you read all the assignments on blackboard he gives you, you will learn a lot and pass the tests easily. Some EC also
Don't think about asking questions or engaging in the lecture. Each class is only him talking. Best way to pass the class is to not listen and just read the study guides he gives because nothing he talks about during the lectures are on the exam. He is very knowledgeable but monotone and boring. Wish it was more interactive.
Yes, boring & no class interaction but interesting when he talks about Africa. Requires 2 papers to pass the class (6 & 8 pages) but is a lenient grader. Use study guides and you will do fine on the tests. Definitely take advantage of the extra credit opportunities, he does not grade on the curve and it can make the difference!
Horrible professor that makes Palomar college look bad!
All he talks about is africa--super cool and inspirational but not relevant to the class or his lecture. He has study guides for his lectures and exams which you should print out and study because thats exactly what is on the exams. You have to show up bc he does pass an attendance sheet around; answers on exam are 910 d-all the above
WHAT EVER YOU DO DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! Prof De Barros is a really nice guy, but his lectures are way too long! All he does is talk about Africa. He only requires to papers, but if you don't do them you will NOT pass the class! Please do yourself a favor and take it with a different professor! If you want to be bored to death then go for it!
Excellent professor. Very interesting though he does diverge often in lectures to talk about his studies in Africa which I found very interesting. Professor de Barros is very kind and willing to help. I thoroughly enjoyed the class. Papers were abundant yet if you know the material and follow the directions, easy to pass. Would take his class again
It's not so much the textbook you use, but a lot of printout reading that you get from blackboard. You definitely need to work to get a good grade, but he is a good teacher and is thorough with the material.
His tests for cultural anthrop. is the best! It's straight out of the study guides he puts up. Just make sure you read the study guides and it's an easy B or A.
Easy A. Offers E.C. If you study his guides you get A's on tests. Essays not bad, just time consuming and he is very lenient on turning essays in late. Unfortunately, he is vocal about his own political opinions, and personally this ruined the class for me. I do not recommend this teacher.
Interesting class, but a lot of info. He does have pretty much all you need to know in the study guides on blackboard so be sure to study those before tests. Some days he's pretty serious, some days he'll be making jokes all class, but overall he's a good professor and I would take him again. DO NOT GET CAUGHT USING YOUR PHONE DURING CLASS!
He's an archaeologist by trade. He has spent a lot of time in the field so he speaks from experience and first hand observations . He goes the extra mile to ensure you have all your learning accommodations met. He welcomes discussions and debates where appropriate. Tests are fairly easy as long as you read and do the tutorials.
He was one heck of a teacher, given that this was pre covid, the way he had explained the material was entertaining and very clear that a chimpanzee could pass!! I would definitely take his class again 10/10, 100/100, etc
