boring lectures, straight from the text. exams are a surprise (pretty tough)

warm and wonderful
Great prof, very friendly.
You'll get more sleep in his class than on your bed, but he's very helpful
Tough exams
skip lectures, they suck. Exams not representative of material covered
No Comments
exams are fair, as long as you study and are prepared
Great guy, likes to talk to students, tests and exams are hard. Likes Pink Floyd
Very helpful, always trying to explain things clearly, exams are hard though
No Comments
Best professor ever, marking is fair, exams are not hard if you do assigned work
Not bad tests, and thankfully notes are on the net(can't write that quick!!!)
Could make exams a bit more like the stuff he covers, do I look like a genius
After midterms does he start to explain clearly. EXAMS/TESTS HARD!
He sucks, he's dumb can't do questions students ask him hard exams/midterms
friendly and really cares about his students
useless guy doesnt care about students, lazy prof hard exams
Great Prof... highly recommended!!!
Should realise teaching is not a competitive sport, be there to teach
He was a good prof in the classroom and outside. An easy A.
AWESOME PROF!!!!!! Finally someone who knows how to teach!
Sometimes he seemed more confused than the students, but his tests were generally fair.
Ammusing and altogether pretty cool (especially for someone like me who had a horrible chem teacher in high school!
too arrogant
HE SHOULD BE BANNED FROM TEACHING...HE IS JUST USELESS..I DONT GET IT WHY IS HE TEACHING
I don't know why they put him is associate dean, he should be there at all, also gives uneasy questions and hard ones that will give you the lowst grade possible
This is the worst professor I have this first year. The others are great. His lectures are totally useless and he is not friednly-a total jerk.Doesn't explain well at all.Every1 goes to the other chemistry section and no one comes to his class(total waste)
NOT approachable..seems like an ass..Proffessor Root is much better. Guess that PhD was for nothing.
to quote his problem solving..."you take a little of this and a little of that and you do some calculations and you drink some toluene and you do some calculations which I don't know how to do and you drink some toluene.
he talks to you like you're a PhD student not a first yr student. Root is MUCH, MUCH better. everyone goes to root's lecture cuz dutton's lectures are useless. his midterms were fair but his exam was murder.
what a great teacher.could be a little clearer though.exam was murder.still walking in daze.just got to nearest computer to tell my story.does anybody else think he's kinda cute..or have i been drinking a little too much toulene?
Dutton almost always fails to understand why first year Chem students don't think like him, and always goes into way too much detail behind the theory of the concept, instead of teaching the math of the concept, which is ALWAYS on exams, which are BRUTAL.
i just would like to know if any of the people who rated Dr. Dutton ever talked to him personally or asked him for help, i can tell they obviously didn't. Dr. Dutton is one of the nicest profs. to talk to and does his best to help his students.
EXTREMELY unclear when solving problems, cocky, insensitive, and makes being a 1st yr university student even harder. To all who get him next year - avoid his lectures and go to another professor's.
absolute worst prof ever...better off going to other class, where you will actually be taught the material on the exam, not what to do if sulfur gets in ur eyes.
stays more outside the realm of the subject that he does on the subject
I went to Root's instead. Dutton is brutal.
I havent met any one lower human being than him yet
Good prof, approachable and "hot"
A pompous fool. Has no respect for undergraduates, and is full of himself for he is the Associate Dean of Science. If you need to appeal any decision of his go straight to the UWSA for assistance. If there is another section, avoid his section.
To person below: most students who are appealing grades in science are losers and cheaters, so get a life
went to him for counseling. He BREAKS the rules written in the U of W calandar..and according to him he doesn't have to explain ANYTHING..if u have issues..go thru a FORMAL appeal process. And he won't listen ..all he says is "NO...NO ...NO&qu
I'm surprised everyone here seems to dislike him. I took his class last year, and all the exams seemed to correspond pretty well with the lectures. He was good about adjusting the marks so more people would do well. The lectures weren't that bad either.
Gets off topic frequently, is not clear at all in problem solving, and is very pompous and arrogant, and therefore quite unapproachable. Avoid his section if you can.
He's pretty stuck up. I would definitely avoid his class if possible. Take a different section - he thinks he owns the school, and his lectures are bad. Really bad.
I have never in all my life seen a professor that did not care about his students and only cared about pleasing females and his motorcylce. If you can avoid him DO IT.. and if you cant dont take the class. Dutton is the professor from hell.
Good Prof(I don’t know what every ones wining about) tries to keeps the lectures interesting by talking about real world application of the material being covered. Does sometimes get off topic. Answers any question a student has. Fair marking scheme, however be very careful with the multiple choice.
Very stuck up and arrogant, is NOT willing to help and doesnt give a rat's bleep about his students. I can't believe he's the associate dean. If i had the power to fire a prof, it would definitely be him. (Likes to impress the girls, even tho he's like 50).
dr. dutton was a great prof. he gave us lots of clues that will help us in the future. he taught us many problem solving methods. yes, he would get off topic to increase the insight and help us think outside the box. the people who think he's a bad prof probably hate chemistry. he's hot.
He thinks he is smart and cute. He is not that smart and not that cute! and he can't even teach!
excellent prof, very approachable and always willing to help those with weaknesses!
Very nice prof, and advisor, just the best in the science dept (along with Pandey)!
When I took this class last year, I found myself in a very tight corner of my own making. I went to see him in a panic a few weeks before exams and he took the time to listen and gave me some very good advice, not on the exam but on surviving university itself, which I really took to heart. Kudos!
He is very nice and educated person and he's very helpful and understanding. Best of all at U windsor
Going to class is sooo useless.... he copies the examples straight out of the book. Doesnt even bother figuring out his own method to solve a problem!!
59-140. Good speaker; didn?t like to put up with people that were not there to learn. If you are there to listen you will learn.
Was regarded by 95% of my colleagues as the absolute worst speaker to date. Computer, note taking, organizational, interactive, communication, and problem solving skills are severely lacking. Gave cyclic advice when asked questions and failed to work through examples of his own making under 30mins. Majority left during lectures. Worst case scenario
I wish he taught 141 as well cause Eichorn sucks. I liked Dutton because his midterm and final was easy for me. Althought he wasn't the best speaker, he explained the material slowly.
going to his class is useless and his not good...DON'T TAKE HIM
Great prof. Way better than eichhorn. Understood everything he said/
a good natural presenter thats caring and gives a lot of advice. Only thing i don't like are the slides because most of them are pictures, so you can't really take any notes. Read before you come to class.
i think he's a good lecturer. His main problem is that he goes off on tangents.. I suggest that you dont listen to those and you'll do fine. At the end of the day he really knows what he's doing. I found that he's also good at connecting with the class, good quality.
This man cannot give a straight answer to a question. Even if you ask a simple question, you will get a 15 minute answer that has nothing to do with what you asked. It's unfortunate that he's the head of the department.
Does not know how to teach. A straightforward answer turns into an elaborate confusing one. Examples and text straight from textbook making it pointless to go to class since we can read the book ourselves. Midterms and final tricky but if you do practice questions you'll be fine!
BEST TEACHER EVER !!!!!!!!!
Pretty good prof. Knows what he's talking about but definitely can get sidetracked on questions asked. Practice the problems and the midterm'll be really easy
Good lecturer, in depth notes and slides. Can be a bit ramble-y but he knows his stuff and is interesting to listen to! I've enjoyed his class.
He is a fair professor. He will test your knowledge thoroughly, but you also have every resource available to do well. Put in some effort, do the questions from the book and you have an A
Worst rudest prof. Closes doors in students face, doesn't answer emails. Will refuse helping you. If you have 85.8 wont round to 86 to give you an A. All I can say is this man is rude and I hope Karma gets him.
He is very rude and rambels on there is no purpose to his lexture honestly you are better off teching yourself. Doesnt know how to answer quesions at all, i dont really think he knows what he is talking about
Pointless to go to class. He just tells you random points about chapters, doesn't go through the material you need to know for midterm.
Explains material somewhat well. He breezes through topics, have to be paying attention. Uses examples in many ways (on screen, real objects) to further helps students understand problems. Enjoyed his lectures. Textbook questions are a must!!!
One of the best profs at UWindsor He speeds by the material during lectures so pay attention and go to class Most helpful during office hours, seriously, use them... Funny guy, very nice and polite. Overall my greatest experience with a chemistry course
Professor Dutton is extremely helpful. He repeatedly told us to come to his office hours and get the help we need rather than seeking out paid tutors. However, his tests are hard and he tends to stray from the topic during lectures. Some of his lectures are helpful, but for the most part, solve from the textbook and get help.
He is a nice man, with many interesting stories. However, lecture is not the time to tell those stories. He will talk about chemistry for 2 minutes before going off on some random tangent. Very boring, but fair exams. Slides are useless, textbook will be your best friend.
You're going to need the textbook. He's there to help if needed but it's best to ask questions from the book. He gets off tangent very quickly in lecture and in person. TAs/GAs are bound to screw up marking your midterms so don't be afraid to go ask about where you got marks off even if you wrote in pencil. Midterms are fairly easy, exam was hard.
Dutton is one of the worst professors at the U. Run as far as you can. He is rude, and does not know how to teach. I think the saddest part is that he does not WANT to teach. When you have Rawson second semester you will be so grateful. I hope they get rid of Dutton soon. He gives the chem department a bad rep. Dr Mutus and Dr Rawson are amazing.
Dutton is one of the worst profs at the U. He does not know how to teach and leaves you with a shaky foundation for the rest of your chem career. You really need to rely on yourself and the textbook for his class. Also, he's really rude and unaccommodating. I used to like chem and be good at it, but then I had him as a prof.
If you follow his work, you will be confused. Teach yourself everything and you will pass...
He's so pretentious. Literally do all the textbook questions, because he barely teaches anything useful. He also gives the hardest midterms ever. I did better in my algebra-stats courses than in chemistry. Went from a 98 in high school to a 70. That says a lot.
He will post the slides online and they are full. He doesn't go over practice of math set problems and that is what his midterms are. If you really want to do well in this class I would recommend doing many practice problems from the textbook or buy mastering chemistry.
Took Chem 140 with him and thought I sucked at chem but it was actually just his horrible teaching skills. I even went to his office for extra help and he made everything seem more complicated. I retook 140 with another prof and it was night and day- made me realize it was him!!! If you can't avoid him as prof just read textbook, ignore him!
Showing up to class will get you a lower mark than if you skipped and learned everything on your own.
Lectures often went off topic. I had a better experience learning from the textbook than from him.
Lectures are very off topic, he expects you to know a lot for a second year course and he isn't great at teaching at a basic level. I wouldn't recommend taking a class with him at all if Organic chemistry isn't your strength as you're basically learning on your own since he's a bad teacher.
Duttons lectures were all over the place and not very helpful. He did encourage office hours, but those only helped so much. Exams were extremely difficult for the course level and not remotely close to exams from previous years. Everyone I knew in that class was having a difficult time.
This man straight up said we have to spend at least 40 hours a week on just his class, and that if we worked at our jobs more than 10 hours a week we wouldn't succeed in the class. Do not take him if you don't have to.
Absolutely awful professor who should not be the course coordinator. Has office hours twice a week but if you try to contact him via email, expect no reply. You are much better off skipping the class and just reading the textbook to teach yourself. The exams were nothing like previous exams given as examples. Avoid him if possible!!!!
Class is only made up of 2 midterms and a final so mess up one and you basically are screwed. The exams were really hard but marked fairly as he gives part marks where possible. His lectures are disorganized and hard to follow.
So organic chemistry II is your make it or break it course for university if your in biochemistry or chemistry or taking it for mcat prep. I practiced using old stuff he posted and when in depth chapter by chapter through the textbook. I took a huge initiative to self-learn but always found his lecture notes a good supplement. SO TOUGH but doable
HE IS THE BEST
He's got a bad rep but he's not that bad. Definitely not an easy course, you have to put in a lot of work on your own to do well bc he doesn't really provide homework problems, but the exams are relatively straightforward and he's a VERY lenient marker. He's also very approachable and accessible outside of class.
Do not ever take this class with him, lousy professor.
Awful...
Tests and homework were completely multiple choice, so I was unable to show my work on bigger questions. Course taught by two different professors. Live lectures were not very helpful. Lots of online homework.
This professor had many issues using Mastering Chemistry and when you would appeal your grade for the issues Mastering chem caused you he wouldn't believe you or do anything about your grade. He was very arrogant and acted like it was our fault for the computer issues. Very unfair!
HORRIBLE during online school. Exams were lengthy, and formatted horribly. The entire structure of the online course was set up for students to fail. Caused so much unnecessary stress. Would not take again.
Dont even bother going to class. He definitely doesnt know how to teach. Not sure how he made it this far as a professor. Self-study and that will get you through the semester.
Doesnt go over necessary material, making class pointless. To pass this class, youll need to teach yourself the material.
Really didn't seem like he cared about students and left some pretty sassy/questionable remarks on blackboard when there were technical issues due to online learning. The content was fine but not a big fan of him...
I had him for both 1st year chem courses. First semester was horrible, unorganized, unfair evaluations, second semester was great, much more organized and fair evaluations. Both courses were fairly easy. Definitely not as bad as people make him seem, he was just struggling to adapt to online learning 1st semester.
dont bother with lectures, get ready to teach yourselves. also very rude when asking for help.
His first midterm had VERY low averages (59%). I don't understand how he even made it this far into his career. He leaves very sassy responses, like what's the point? It's your job to help students. Don't get mad at us for reaching out for help and wanting to learn the content that YOU teach us. If you have other options, pick anyone else but him.
He's super rude to students. 75% of your grade will be based on 2 midterms and the final, which is stupid. He doesn't care about students, basically refuses to answer personal emails, doesn't want to talk about grades, etc. Gives way more questions than you have time for on the midterm so beware. Even well-studied people can only do average in chem
Not helpful whatsoever. Would not answer emails or questions from students. Made online midterm so difficult to avoid cheating that almost no one finished.
Im not sure if in person is any different, but if you have the option avoid taking any class with Philip Dutton. He is rude and condescending towards students. Both of the online midterms marking was incorrect and he refused to respond to students emails about their marks. If he did respond, it was a rude and short response
Honestly, the materials covered in the syllabus is pretty basic if you did chemistry in highschool . But the online course was designed poorly and made learning chemistry awfully boring. You will also not be able to approach professor Dutton regarding any concerns, hell either not respond, or go off about how silly your questions are.
Dutton is misunderstood! He was a fair marker, and his exams had questions easier than those taught in class or previous exams that he generously gives. Sure the first exam (59% Avg.) is plagued with mistakes and long, but he understood and rectified. Imagine receiving 700 repeated emails before marks even came out; I would be a little upset too!
The lectures are very useless. You're going to have to teach yourself all the course material which is extremely difficult. He is also very rude and intimidating.
Dutton should not be teaching. His lectures are useless and he is arrogant and rude. If you cannot keep up with the material yourself, you won't do good in this class.
I attended class for about a month. I gathered that his lectures were of no help. The content was needed, but I didn't retain much. I always had to teach myself the content at home. Luckily, he is kind enough to post everything written during the lecture online. From then, I did not go to class. Never read the textbook. Quite helpful office hours.
His lectures are pretty bad. In this class, you need to keep up with the course material on your own (it's very fast-paced) or else you will not do well. Very helpful for midterms as he posted practice examples; though the average was low the marking/questions were pretty fair. Your mark will be 95% from exams and 5% from homework.
Went to about 4 lectures at the start of the semester but found he doesn't explain anything well and then didn't go for the rest of the year. Not very approachable, will get mad if you email him about anything instead of using Brightspace. His midterms are similar to the practice ones he posts so they are helpful, and overall he is a fair marker.
Worst professor I've ever had, he has a short temper, he's not patient and not kind at all, gets upset easily, avoid talking to him if you can!
Easily the worst course I've taken. Lectures were rushed, unclear, and didn't match what we were tested on. Asking questions often led to rude or dismissive replies. No amount of tutoring or studying felt enough. This course is far more manageable with other profs. Avoid if possible.
Worst professor I've ever had in my entire academic career. Just so condescending and rude to students. Lectures made no sense, tests had no correlation to class lectures and he would never explain anything properly. This is the worst I have ever done in a class in my whole life. I can't even explain how mentally drained I am from this class.
Though our professor was Sam and Rawson, I used to watch his videos for chem1110 which was very good to understand the concepts. After the holocaust in second midterm, he gave us a chance to score 90+ in the final by giving chance to answer 4 out of 5 questions which sums up the average. Overall, the coordination was good this time.
for the first time in my life, i did so horrible. the lecture notes made no sense whatsoever and he was very dismissive. very unorganized prof and should be replaced for future students success.
if the course is with him, would suggest to transfer the course from Queens University rather than take it with him. respect to how he teaches but i will never ever in my life take this class with him again. if you want to save your gpa from an exponential decrease, take my advice and take it with another prof or take it at a different institution
pick a god and start praying
I sit at the very front but cannot understand what he's saying no matter how hard I try.
Talks down to students , always upset about something and taking it out on everyone else, I have no words.
