He does not know all of the content in the corse, only portions. His idea of making a test more challenging is testing you on concepts you have not covered in class.
He comes across nice at first but by the 3rd week you will realize he downloads his slides off the internet and does not know half of the content of them. He will tell you not to worry about something for a test and it will pop up worth 30-40% of the whole thing. He claims it is our job to read the entire book, then tests stuff that is not covered.
The day of our second midterm, Dr. Egberts told us the midterm was going to be more difficult. Ok, fair right? Wrong. The midterm was supposed to cover 15 lectures, and yet made a question worth 40% of the test that was from one slide out of the 15 slideshows. He also specifically told us that he would NOT make us do that question. liarlazy prof
Hardest final you will ever write. Don't bother studying because it won't be on material you've covered anyhow
Epic fail for someone in the educational field. Doesn't put in the work to make lecture slides nor prepare for them. Extremely rude to students, almost to a point of personally degrading. Selectively makes questions so that only 5% of the class could get it right. Tests materials not covered in class, not in text book, and on random comments made.
Final was not even remotely related to the course content. Do yourself a favour and don't waste time studying for this course cause it won't do you any good. Focus on your other courses.
This course is not supposed to be difficult, however he tested us on things he said wouldn't be on the test and the final tested us more on our math skills than anything else. Unprofessional behaviour, makes me question why I put myself through such a headache to get a mechanical engineering degree.
Tests did not accurately reflect course material... or even material covered in the course for that matter. Does not provide any practice problems or practice tests. Lack of clarity and explanation of lecture content and when presented with questions usually responded with "look in your textbook" or "google it".
Does not conduct lecture at a good pace- too fast Glosses over too many details and doesnt appear to be confident about material Refers you to textbook which is better but doesnt help on the test Level of material taught is quite low compared to the material tested Does not provide the appropriate tools to suceed at this course's tests
Wants to help students do well
Great communication, very knowledgeable in material science. Great resource with lots of experience in the field. Open to questions, and goes out of his way to answer them.
Clear and concise during lectures. Covers the necessary material within lecture hours
Clear and concise during lectures. Goes over the necessary material within lecture hours
worst prof ever
Provides the information for tests in class, if you skip class you will miss material and not do well.
GPA booster, dont have to go to class to get good grades. Tests are common sense. Honestly, just a review of highschool biology. Cell nucleation is simple and Eggberts inspires me to be doctor.
Print the notes out, attend the lecture, read the textbook, do the textbook questions; pretty much what you would do for any other course. Egberts does go over the important concepts for the class, but you should read the textbook to get a more thorough understanding. Look out for what he says is testable. Beware of the time crunch on tests.
Very organized. Enjoyed the class
The course was tough and the final was hard, but I ended up doing well in the end thatnks to Dr. Egberts
Good professor
Was told by many that he is not a good professor. But I actually like his way of teaching and his sense of humor. His exams are really tough but they are not unfair. I get a feeling that he is actively trying to improve as time goes on.
Amazing professor. Provides great training for engineers
Egberts is very poor at communicating concepts, he does not help people learn but instead attempts to impress students with hards tests. His tests frequently had errors. He makes terrible, unrelated jokes and comments. The one thing I learned from Egberts is to appreciate all other profs because they can't be worse than egberts.
Decent prof who deserves more credit than he gets. Materials science is NOT easy, and I thought he presented it as simply as he could. Though he tested a lot from the textbook (mc), what he said in class saved me. Bombed the first quiz and midterm, but pulled myself together. An A is not impossible if you actually study and not just blame the prof
He is very funny, I like his jokes
Good Teacher but with a 6 course load, the quizzes are to abstract, with limited study time, we can't go deep into the theory and more textbook like problems would be appreciated
Would take this course again just cause he is a great professor!
Hes very passionate about the material he teaches. Has a nerdy sense of humor which is entertaining. His tests always include one long answer that is meant to stump everyone, so eve n if he only touches a topic once in one class its still equally as likely to be tested on as the rest of the material
Amazing professor who is always there to help. Rocks a vest
Dr. Egberts has taught me what it means to be an astronaut, his knowledge of quantum physics combined with his devilish good looks make him a fantastic candidate to be the start of his own sci-fi movie.
Dr. Egberts is honestly the best prof I've ever had. Not only did he teach me a lot about materials, but he also taught me how to be a better person. A true inspiration, with a smile that will take your breath away. Truly in a league of his own, not only as a sailor/bass player/professor, but as a friend.
Before I joined this class, I was questioning my religion and my path in life; I went home and cried every night. Dr. Egberts inspired me to transfer into religious studies through his detailed discussion on FCC. FCC to me once stood for Face Centered Cubic, now it stands for Faith Can Change
Dr. Egberts intentionally misleads students as to the content that will be tested on the midterm. He doesn't use class time effectively at all. He often glosses over important material. He is the most unprofessional professor I have ever seen. He uses class time to belittle other majors, faculties and other professors.
Expects students to read the whole textbook.
I love this prof <3
best professor ever!!!!!!!!
Egbert is not the prof that you think he is by reading his rating and the positive comments here. Just try to find a prof that respects his students and cares for them. If you like reading textbooks and teaching the course to your self then you wont mind what prof you have anyways. But if thats not you, well you might find the class stressful
I only have two eyes I can't read that much
Egberts teaches about 80% of his course. The rest you'll have to learn from youtube or textbook. Nice guy, cares about students. I learned a lot in this course. However, his tests are hard. Multiple choice is SUPER specific, and long answer was hard. The practice problems he posts for the midterms/final don't represent the test q's at all.
Egberts is one of the worst professors Ive ever had. Inepts and incompetent.
During our interim presentation, he got in the meeting 15 minutes late, and stopped us mid presentation and told us we had to be prepared to present a shorter presentation to accommodate his lateness. The course outline and d2l documents clearly state that we were alotted a 20 minute presentation time. So unfair.
Egberts is the worst professor Ive ever had in my degree
It was his first time teaching 521 and the whole course felt unprepared. Assignments were insane difficulty, often using software for the first time in our degree without tutorials or support from him. He doesn't do any math in class and then expects you to self study everything for the oral final. Overall, I learned a lot... but I suffered greatly
Someone hurt him in his formative years and we are the ones to bear the consequences
I took his feedback and he gave me a lower mark than before
His classes are crimes against humanity
Representation is very important, and I commend UofC for giving us diverse representation through Dr. Philip Egberts. Thank you for representing the Incapable Professors Community
Terrible at managing the course time. Very ineffective communicator. Unclear expectations. Changes weighting of assignments after they were submitted, making them worth more. Sad that a course about managing your own project is managed so poorly itself. Terrible example of management for students to follow.
so much unnecessary work!
Unclear, too much work, doesn't explain new material. You're better off learning from the textbooks.
Horrible
Unclear expectations, tons of unnecessary material you will have to go through as its never clear what is actually tested or needed for the course.
Egberts does not give his students the necessary sources to succeed in this course. He has weekly lecture videos that do not even scratch the surface of the content. Aside from his brief and simple explanations, his tests are extremely difficult. Majority, if not all the learning is independent and will definitely require hours of reading.
Terrible. In every single aspect he was horrible. gave assignemnts and opened thme for like two minutes and didnt tell us they would close as soon as they did. INcredibly hard marker
I find it difficult to believe that this person is a professor at the UofC. Choosing this professor feels like opting for a guaranteed 'F' grade. The lecture videos barely cover the material, and excessive textbook reading is expected weekly. Exams are difficult, testing how much you remember the small details in the textbook.
I started hating my life because of this prof. He teaches next to nothing in the online lecture videos, and our textbook has a million times more material that's impossible to finish in a timely manner. Each chapter is a course on its own. And you never know where he will ask the questions from. He will find the most obscure thing and ask that.
I don't even know how the Uni could find this guy and then actually approve him for teaching.
the assigned textbook sometimes has nothing to do with lecture notes, his grading criteria is unclear and all over the place and his lecture videos suck.
Waiting for his retirement.
September 2023: Mechanical Engineer yeaaaaaaaaa November 2023: Anything but Mechanical TLDR: Egberts gave me enough reason to stay clear of Mechanical. I get that it is a new course but they genuinely teach it in the most backwards way possible. Theres no practice midterms. Just these worksheets in class that do not help much.
UofC should give me a job as professor because I practically taught myself. Your better off ranting to a mirror than watching his lecture videos.
Lecture videos cover about only 25% of exam content. It is a new course with very limited resources available for studying. Textbook provides detailed information while videos are brief and he seems to copy down information from another screen instead of actively teaching and explaining.
He's horrifically bad at conveying his idea in his online lectures, for the future generation that might have his course (204), directly jump to reading the text book and try your best to do the extra practice questions at the end of each chapter. It will take time, but it will be worth it and FYI HIS LECTURES ARE DECOYS TO WASTE UR TIME.
Terrible. He replies to emails quickly but his responses are arrogant and not helpful. ENGG 204 was also total waste of my time. He forces you to buy a $90 subscription for the homework which is not available for free access on campus. Its worth %3 of your final grade. Poorly organized classes. The 'hybrid learning' was a mess too.
The online video lectures are not very good and do not cover any of the actual exam questions. Be prepared to do all the work and studying on your own
Imagine how many students would become great engineers in the future if they didn't stumble across this incapable human being.
Refused to post the answer key for a practice midterm. TAs gave incorrect information during a midterm and he blamed the students for not studying enough. The only thing I learned from his lectures was the materials in a Boeing 787
it was rough.
I love how giving Egbert 1.0 rating has become a daily task.
Was very unclear about the fact that his lectures (which are practically useless because the guy doesn't explain the equations he's throwing at you) do not cover all of the content that is required for the exams. Because textbook readings count for grades, you're better off skipping the lectures and just reading the textbook. Got an annoying voice
You'll learn more about engineering materials by bashing your head with an aluminum rod than you will listening to his lectures. His voice hurts more than nails on chalkboards, and the slides suck. Don't watch the lectures, just read the textbook and do the practice problems. Midterm is partly MC so its hard to fail, but don't expect much.
Unprofessional and unclear expectations.
He was the worst. Arrogant unprofessional replies to emails.
zero organization or clarity regarding content on midterm or final exams, extensive text book readings (with several formulas that aren't even on the formula sheets).
Egberts offers worthless lectures, omitting crucial content, making the $90 textbook necessary. Uses a textbook not made for this class. Zybooks questions have answers hidden from you, hindering study. Arrogant responses reveals an attitude toward students, intensifying the already dreadful learning experience; don't bother asking him questions.
Egberts is an absolute nightmare. Enduring his lectures is a strenuous experience, with zero takeaway. When it comes to studying for midterms, you'll need a map to navigate the labyrinthine assigned to you, and get used to having no help. Being enrolled in his class is unwillingly subjecting yourself to mental torture.
I swear to god this guy is the embodiment of a blue hair girl and the nerd emoji fused into one but in the form of a middle-aged man. The amount of sass this guy spews out is actually unreal. If I ask buddy a simple yes or no question about the course this guy responds and tells me to check the course outline, like ain't no one reading all that.
doesnt teach i hate life
I would give this prof a 0/5 if I could. He is honestly the worst prof I have ever had. His video "lectures" lightly skim through very important topics. He expects you to know small details from the very long textbook readings for the midterm. No clarity as to what will be on the exam. Very poorly organized course. Useless weekly reflections
It's so over for us first years.
New course, he does not go over nearly enough in his own lecture videos and provides no help with textbook material. Guy is a sass machine, you cannot ask a genuine question in this class, and if you have a hard question he will refer you to the textbook in which most questions do not even have a solution and most of the assigned content is random.
His methods do not effectively convey the course material, which is evident in the overall performance of the students in terms of their GPA. There is a noticeable lack of responsiveness to emails, and his attitude often comes across as condescending. This situation raises concerns about his background and effectiveness in this educational role.
u wouldn't want him to teach u.
He classes are a war crime, the only reason he hasn't been prosecuted is because even the Geneva Convention doesn't want to be associated with him. The reviews before 2016 were amazing, all I wonder during his classes was who hurt him in 2016, and why he hasn't recovered yet.
The only reason my therapist makes money is cause of Egberts. Attending Egberts lectures make me question my sexuality thus making me pursue Gender studies.
Roses are red, frustration runs high, His lectures and zybooks readings, make me want to say goodbye.
Worst prof ever. So much reading and no clarity for what will be on the test. poorly organized class
This professor is Godly awful, HIs lecture videos does not help with any concepts and will make you more confused. Reading the textbook is more beneficial than his video, so save your time and just read the video. Only thing I've learned from him is the boieng planes.
Rude and hates receiving emails.
Tends to have unclear expectations as to what will be tested on exams, and his lecture videos aren't very clear or descriptive either. His communication through emails and D2L announcements is somewhat unprofessional.
I feel bad leaving a bad review but there is a major disconnect between the content in this guys lectures and the assigned textbook reading, which has an extreme excess of information and you are given absolutely no indication what information is relevant to the course and what isn't. Dude's aim is to stress everyone out.
This guy is tripping and doesnt understand chemistry
This guy makes me want to switch to business
Terrible at communicating what is expected to be learned. Uses video lectures, in person-lectures, and a textbook that hardly ever align with one another
He's literally the rudest person with a power trip trying to make first year eng students drop out, NEVER email him with questions, he will answer quickly, and extremely rudely.
At the beginning of the semester, I was an aspiring mechanical engineer. Now I am electrical. That should tell you all you need to know about this course. He is unhelpful and his lectures cover 10% of the material, his demeanor toward students is very sassy. There are almost no resources and students go into the exam running on hopes and prayers.
He is so bad he makes even mediocre professors look like a gift from God. Quite unprofessional. Useless lecture videos that cover 10% of the topics actually needed to know. Assigns very large and copious amounts of reading in the textbook that he makes us pay $90 for when it's not worth much of our marks.
Dr. Egberts has difficulty staying on topic and was disinterested in the materials he was supposed to teach. He will often go off on tangents, talking about his PHD studies and disregards the most important topics. This combined with the absence of exam prep and practice problems, made the material next to impossible to learn.
I think this guy is teaching a different course than all the other 204 profs. He yaps way too much about himself and his "accomplishments". I would rather live in Manitoba for the rest of my life than see this guy ever again. I am making it my life goal to prove everything he has researched wrong.
The one good thing I can say about Egberts is that he will make all your other professors seem amazing. He only goes over around 15% of the total course material in his lecture videos, and expects you to do an insane amount of reading to learn the rest. Do yourself a favor and don't watch his videos, just read the textbook
To future first years; I'm sorry. - Tons of reading - Flipped learning style is a mess with low quality lecture videos - Does not provide good additional practice for midterms (or lacks answer keys for practice) - Arrogant in his responses to students - TAs gave incorrect information to students during midterm and he blamed the students Good luck
I didn't think a class could be this absolute atrocity that this man has made it.
Terrible, just terrible.
This man is the most disorganized and outright mean person on this campus. Test questions are nothing like questions worked on in class and are taken from random pages in the online textbook. Mock midterms are multiple times easier than anyone could hope the exams could ever be. Be prepared to hate this class. Good Luck
Informal and hates replying to students.
Bad prof doesn't teach the course in an effective manner to promote learning within the students and inspire them into the field of mechanical engineering. He does quite the opposite with his terrible teaching style and terrible tests. Read the textbook and hope you get a good in class prof that actually wants to help because that's the only way.
He'll respond pretty fast to discussion posts/emails... and try to guilt you into thinking your question is beneath him. I have seen the gates of hell; and at its post, stands Philip Egberts. I read every associated chapter in preparation for his midterm and still feel like I have a surface level understanding of the material at best. God.
Although I understand that Eng 204 is a brand new course and there may not be many resources like older practice mid terms, the practice we actually get becomes quite frusturating as there isn't much clarity of what questions we should do and what we're expected to know and not know. There is a huge difference between the textbook and the lecture.
Egberts goes out of his way to respond to students questions in such a timely manner simply to say "I've answered this question already". He is the most frustrating professor that I've had and I will not miss him. Every waking moment Egberts is alive he is plotting the perfect plan to screw over every innocent being that was forced to endure him.
He does not even try to engage in teaching. It was an awful experience and made the context of learning the material really difficult.
I'm rating it a 1 because a zero isn't an option. It's unclear what we're supposed to be learning, and there's no adequate preparation for the midterm and final exams. The professor appears to have an arrogant attitude, considering himself superior to everyone. This is the worst professor I've ever had and that's surprising in Schulich.
Dr Egbert's needs to do a better job organizing the course and clearly explaining what we need to know for the test rather than just making us read hundreds of pages.
Phil Egg is a professor that actively works alongside the devil to suck the happiness out of every student before the second semester. When a student has a question, Egberts shuts them down, using the language of a grumpy two year old. The only thing I am being taught in this class is that I should not ask questions, or even wonder anything at all.
I came here from my home country knowing no English and no information about Canada. However, my biggest hurdle is overcoming this professor and his poorly designed course. The only thing worse then his lectures is the lack of resources he provides on the material.
Professor Egberts hates teaching. The course content for 204 is all over the place, and Egberts does everything in his power to make the course harder. If you dare email him about the course material he'll reply in a sassy and condescending way, without actually answering your question. Terrible teacher all around, good luck if you have him.
Unclear, uncoordinated, and immature.
Dont come to engineering, unless you somehow can skip first year
It would've been just me hating without clear reason but it turns out, almost every other student feels the same way about him and ENGG 204. There is a lot of reading, the practice midterms don't help at all, and above all, the way he addresses/responds to students' emails is condescending (didn't experience this directly but my friends have).
Dr Egberts is the worst teacher that has ever graced the face of the Earth. His unprofessionalism, sass, unpreparedness, inability to admit wrongdoing and general incompetence is astounding. Unclear expectations, completely useless lectures and tons of textbook reading (whose hundreds of practices questions have no answers) are what you can expect.
The material in this course range from chemistry to material science to confusion to despair. You have to do a lot of mental gymnastics just to make sense of how the chapters are even related. I am studying for my 2nd midterm 2 weeks before my final. Really shows how well organized the course is. Good luck getting a straight answer out of the prof
Phil Egberts is the reason why Eng has such a high dropout rate. I feel bad for his children, he is the mother in law that no one wishes to have
very unorganized.
I love Philip Egberts!!!11!!!1!
Textbook heavy course where the the lectures give a minimal portion of the content required to know. Very unsure of what is on the exams and has mislead students on midterms. Responds to questions on the discussion board with in a demeaning manner and is never clear with his responses. Leads you to get your answers from teaching assistants instead.
Atrocious and stuck up. He's on a mission from hell to ruin his student's lives, probably resulting from a lack of attention from his husband. The only thing more unclear than the expectations in this course is the survival rate of his students. If you're reading this it's too late. Repent and believe in the gospel. Jesus is the only way out now.
Cant teach The only thing lower than his ability to teach is how many ***** i give about his phd.
my biggest opp. the most informative lesson egberts ever gave was a lesson about himself, followed by a quiz about himself. i learned more about him, his phd, and his love for beer and biking than i did about engineering materials.
Course I took (engg 204) was in shambles. That being said, he was the coordinator. No accurate outline of curriculum/learning objectives or worked example questions given. Brief and shallow video lectures. Most he has gone in depth in this course was about himself. And the cherry on top: inconsistent and/or snarky responses to student questions.
Now I get that this course is relatively new, but I assure you it can be managed a LOT better than this. The content is rushed, the video lectures are not that helpful, and the communication between coordinators to the profs are clearly insufficient. Focus on using the online textbook and communicate with other block members. May God be with you.
There is NO need for a class to be this unorganized. Lectures were so vague and exams were based 80% on the textbook. Egberts responds to student questions cryptically and often in a very condescending tone. It was never show how to use any of the formulas in lecture so you had to learn to use 50+ formulas completely on your own for the midterm.
Easy class if you have the prerequisite knowledge (ENME 616, ENME 630). Think there was a mix-up with the course code (says 204 for some reason? def not a first-year class), but it's a refreshing course to take with my capstone and other senior electives. If you're looking for something to challenge you in your last year, this is a good course!
Is not good
Bro wants you to read his mind while writing the midterm since TAs give wrong information and the questions are vague. Little to no practice available, lectures are useless.
Unclear as for what is on the midterm. Poorly organized course
Not a good class
Lecture videos often unrelated or irrelevant to material we are expected to know. For future 204 students, just read the Zybook instead, don't bother with the videos. Exams are often vague and unclear, with questions that are never covered in lecture and Egberts comes off stubborn and condescending whenever people come to him for help or advice.
For future students; if you want to do well on the tests you'll need to do all of the challenge activity problems in the zybooks, don't expect Egberts or the practice tests to be indicative of what's actually going to be on the midterms/finals. Good luck, you will need it
1. Read the textbook first. You WON'T pass if you rely on lecture notes alone 2. DO NOT TRUST HIM, he told us we didn't need to memorize any formulas for both of the midterms. BOTH had written answer questions that were worth 11 marks with formulas that you needed to memorize 3. HE WILL respond passive-aggressively if you ask any valid questions
Dr. Egberts is the kinda guy to not give any resources. For calc, Dr. Hamilton had a 3 hour review session along with practice. For 225, Norm Bartley posts ALL previous midterm and final to give students a good shot. For 211, practice finals and midterms are avaliable. The only class where you can feel both prepared an unprepared is 204.
first question of his first final of 204 was a quantum mechanics question... i did not know i changed my course from material science to physics in one night... man had the audacity to be in the examination hall taking selfies and eating his donut... that hole in the donut is also probably his doing.
So bad I would rather drop out than take a class with him again. Too much content, mean, very rude and seems like he doesn't want his students to succeed. He should not be in charge of a whole course with that ignorant attitude. The 204 final was a nightmare and it's his fault.
Useless. His lecture videos cover about 1% of the course material, forcing you to read the INSANELY long textbook. For finals preparation, he released 4 final exams for a course with content similar to ENGG204, but did not state which questions applied to our course and also didn't release an answer key, so you never knew if you were correct. RUN.
After that final, this guy deserves every hate comment on this godsend of a platform.
The midterms were a breeze, but HE TRICKED ALL OF US. That final was an extremely poor representation of the course material. The second question involved a quantum mechanics equation? Half of the test was on one small unit, in which the only material given to us to learn those topics were a poorly photocopied section of a random textbook.
Originally, I mentioned that I felt bad about giving a bad review, after the final exam not anymore. I think the RMP score speaks for itself. If you are taking this course soon, good luck my friend.
I never give bad reviews as I also feel bad for it, but after seeing the final exam of this course, nah not anymore. Well, just refer to the other reviews and the ratings. Disappointing.
Speaking as someone who is academically confident and studied very hard for this course, I can tell you that it doesn't help, your success isn't in your effort but this man's decision. I got marked wrong on a question because I didn't do it the way he wanted. The final was insanely difficult and seeing students failing brought a smile on his face.
Donut take his classes, he is a ruthless man with no pity for us mere mortals.
First off a 90 dollar textbook of which reading were for marks. He was very vague about the material we needed to know for the midterms and finals so no one knew what to study for. Lectures were reading off slides and when questions were asked we " should already know that". Final was absurd and completely omitted half of the cotent
Guy is your biggest op. Does not want u to succeed. Better learn how to read minds, because no one has any clues what will be on the final. On the day of the final, he was smiling and laughing. He knew this exam was hard. I am not a religious man, but Egberts made me pray on the final. Decided majority of course (week 6-11) wasn't important.
They say there are no bad students, only bad teachers. WOW is that true. Exams don't reflect course material at all. You're better off taking a dump in a gas station men's room and then playing Lego Fortnite Battle Royale for seven and a half hours straight than studying for this class- nothing you study will be on the exam anyways.
holds this weird grudge against all students that the entirety of all germanic languages do not contain enough words to express how awful this man is
Bro is NOT a munch
He is truly a gem of a man when it comes to one thing, and one thing only. He will turn your life, no matter how good or comfortable you believe it to be into a Shakespearean tragedy. You will weep like you never have before, and the ground on which you stand will quake so that it defies every law of physics you can barely understand.
He was insulting when I tried to get answers from him, as he said you should know this by now, he also gave stuff form a separate similar course but did not give an answer key and what was more applicable for use. A dog could teach better.
we got played and tricked. rest in peace engg 204 class of 2023
while most professors test us on what they taught, philip tests us on stuff outside the course curriculum.
testing us on blurry textbook photos> texting us on course content
His lectures are useless, barring a few multiple-choice answers laid out as confusingly as possible to try and trick you into picking the wrong answer rather than test knowledge. Written questions were completely out of nowhere. The formula sheets were extensive but nothing was used from it, expect to memorize additional formulas.
Awful
Tests are all over the place
jeez that final bro!!!
The final was mostly on 1/12 topics, and that was the only one no body had time to study, and he didn't even have any readings for it, so we just had to study off of his horrible lecture videos that cover nothing but facts about him. Honestly would have done better on the final if he tested us about himself instead of what we were "taught".
Honestly made me hate engineering, and his calss was just a nightmare.
Omg don't even get me started on the professor. The videos were so useless and they were a waste of time. The final was all stuff from the last week stuff and we only had a few days to go over content, why would they use material from a Mech Engg third year course as a first year. The course could have been structured way better.
Pretty Deece
Really rude and I don't enjoy watching his lecture videos because it doesn't seem like he enjoys teaching them lol. The two midterms weren't too bad, and the assignments are easy but the final was terrible! I don't think many people passed lol
His online lecture videos are useless. He's also quite condescending towards students. You'll pretty much be learning the course by yourself through the textbook which is an awful amount of reading. In-class worksheets are a joke. It is a new course, so some trial and error is understandable, but the lack of preparation for the course is beyond me.
None of what was taught in the lectures and in class was on the exams. The online lectures had numerous mistakes in them. Some topics weren't even in the textbook and were major components of the final exam. The final exam comprised of 90% material from the first three weeks. Unprofessional, not helpful, and rude
very bad.
A terrible course coordinator who likes to test us on stuff that was either not covered or barely covered. Also chooses to spend lots of time teaching us stuff that he does not test us on. The lectures and course are very unorganized.
Aced the second midterm, which was %90 of the course material. Only needed a quarter of the marks for final to pass. But I ain't getting it. Why? because the final wasn't from %90 of the material and it was about the most obscure irrelevant stuff he could find in the textbook that he wen't over for a fraction of a second. (for 90 points) Says a lot
The content taught in lectures and the videos was only 5% of what you needed to know for the midterms and final. The rest of the content you need to know will he hidden in the smallest part of the online textbook.
I am a Egberts supporter till the day I die. Yes this class is hard, however, everything is provided to you and you can do well in this class if you stay on top of your work. Yes the final was hard, however as long as you did practice problems and showed up to the PASS you would have done fine. Everything is literally given to you, just us it.
his lectures are useless as they don't cover all the content you need to know for the course. and the textbook covers extra content you don't need to know for the course. long answer exam questions worth 1/5 of the exam were incredibly niche and seemingly unimportant content from half a page out of the hundreds from the textbook. eggy is also rude.
Unclear instructions on what the material will be on tests including midterms and finals, condescending attitude in news posts and discussion boards, unnecessary extra homework that's graded and not optional, useless video lectures on D2L, high expectations for absolutely no reason (assigned quizzes before classes even started).
This man should be banished from academia. His competence, attitude and fashion choices (husband must be blind) are the worst at the UofC. The university should be ashamed that this man is now becoming the assistant Dean of the engineering physics dept. Should never be allowed to teach first-years, or anyone else, ever again. Jazz hands.
All the materials are in fact there for you to pass and succeed, it's just that you spend most of your time on graded readings and video quizzes which are the opposite of helpful. Independent learning and self teaching are not bad skills to learn but we were unfairly thrown into the deep end without any guidance on what to prepare for.
You'll be thrown in the deep end immediately. First midterm was bad, second was easy & the final was a flaming dumpster fire w/ a large amount being random stuff he added to the course in the last week. He decided the best way to teach the new random add-on was an 80 pg PDF of cellphone PHOTOS of a textbook we could not get w/ scentances cut off.
This class was absolute hell on earth. The midterms were a mess, and the final was like a landfill near an oilsands. AVOID IF POSSIBLE.
What is there to say that hasn't been said before. This was a horrible class, and the final asked questions on material outside of the course. It's bad. It's just that bad.
This class is what I imagine Jahannam to be like. The devil should take notes.
Good teaching in the videos, but inconsistent and dishonest with grading and tests. Puts equations he never explained on the midterms (only from the textbook, which we were told could wait till the finals), assigns large useless assignments each week (like he thinks it's our only course), and refuses to answer questions about what is on the test...
The midterms will be easy. The final will be hard. His video lectures are good but vague. What I found after the first midterm was the bulk of every question is from his online lecture slides and online quizzes after. Some questions were legit taken word for word. Very little info is from the textbook - the textbook is to help you understand stuff
This class was taught with an astronomical level of incompetence. The organization of it was genuinely terrible, and the final asked questions that were not in the curriculum.
Let me be clear: I succeeded in this course, not because of Dr. Egberts, but in spite of him. His lectures were horrid, and unreflective of the second midterm. Important concepts are glazed over in the lecture. Shoutout Taylor Sparks on YouTube for teaching me the curriculum better than the instructor. Seriously, everyone should watch him.
I succeeded in this course but none of it was bc of him. You need to read literally all of the textbook - set aside a few hours for this weekly. One of the most disrespectful &unprofessional teachers ever, don't expect any help. Class doesn't matter bc you learn nothing new (they go over slides you have already read). Pray and you might succeed
He has got to be the rudest prof I have ever been taught by. Thinks he and his class are the center of the universe. Don't even bother with the lecture videos, everything in them you know from highschool or will be covered next year just google the topic names and get that completion mark. The midterms may be easy but the final is HELL!
He has no rules, no boundaries. He doesn't flinch at torture, human trafficking, or genocide. He's not loyal to a flag or a country or any set of ideals.
Nuh uh. RIP to the engineering physics kids next year who have him as an associate dean. This course made me learn to never expect any goodwill. 50% of the final was two written response answers from the most obscure sections of the course, which were a combined less than 5mins in the video lectures. RIP to first years if hes doing this again.
Trust Alberta women but not this professor! But still you can get 4 GPA in his subject if you follow zybook only and neglect his videos.
This class was fairly difficult, but it's unfair to put all of the blame on Dr. Egberts and it makes 0 sense to snidely remark on his personal life. The course was brand new and was bound to be a struggle because of that, but the midterms were fair and our final marks were curved significantly. Attend the PASS sessions and you'll be fine
Course itself is not actually that hard but he doesn't do enough for you to learn it well. lazy copy paste of the textbook of the course back when it was a mechanical course with no changes to reflect course content changes. notes don't go in depth enough nor do they have enough examples. final also just had a question in a topic he never taught
Egberts was clearly not used to teaching. He good making each lecture, the transition in content week-to-week was poor. We would frequently return to topics we had covered weeks earlier for no apparent reason (it's a new course, will likely improve). Grading was fair - nothing was weighted too heavy and I only needed 20% on the final to pass.
this was one of the worst profs i've ever had, lecture videos were useless and same with emailing him to ask questions. you're better off reading the textbook and finding videos online to teach you. midterms were okay but final was absolutely brutal. if i could give him a zero rating then i would.
The professor seemed inexperienced, but the class was manageable with the help of the textbook and unstuckstudy. Attend classes and use all available resources to ace this course.
This man is the worst professor ever, I'm a fourth year engineering student and I failed his class. He brought donuts to class once a week and would take SELFIES during exams with them. Do not bring donuts to class he might eat them.
This guy is the pinnacle of worst professor to have existed in history. I thought the donut comments were ridiculous...they were in fact very serious. I think he brings in more donuts now out of spite...
I only had him for one of my sem lectures and I can already feel my gpa exponentially dropping just from his speech, an mai is like lebron and hes like D wades daughter
I never see anyone this delusional before... genuinely I'm so confused man... what's wrong with you gng!
