Here's the deal. Take the online course. Lecture class is pointless and is the same thing as the online course, except you don't get to use your book for tests in the lecture class. Made an A either way. Not a bad guy just a little scatterbrained.
This class is wiffle ball. I missed 4 of 9 online HW's, missed a few classes, and didn't always pay attention. There is in class extra credit and lots of online notes and help as well as a VOLUNTARY TEST for bonus points onto your FINAL AVERAGE. You'd have to actually put forth effort to fail.
MOST GOD AWFUL CLASS AT CLEMSON, HE TEACHES ASTRONOMY AS WELL AND IT"S HARD! STAY THE F@#! AWAY!!
His lectures are coma inducing. The tests are hard and the online quizzes are a pain. If you are thinking about passing this class, YOU HAVE TO do the bonus points. If i didnt do the bonus points, i woulda failed for sure. Avoid at all costs!
I only go to lecture for the bonus points. If you enjoy this class..you should seek help. I'm pretty sure the guy has smoked away any teaching ability he once possessed. I can't imagine a bigger waste of time...maybe the Astro Lab..it's a toss up.

This class is completely rediculous. Questions on the test are impossible to find in the book. If you do find them, almost every question has multiple answers. Online notes don't really help much, but they are more clear than the book. Grading scale isn't too harsh. STAY AWAY, It's killing my GPA.
If someone told me I had to take this class over again I would tell them they might as well shoot me because there is no way in hell i would even consider it...Death or Astronomy? I think we both know which is the better option.
He's a nice guy, but this class is a joke. Take the online course, it will provide more time to sleep. I got an A in both classes with minimal effort. You better be ready for Tests, have you notes handy and Google ready, cause they are impossible. Good luck, cause this class is a waste of time.
Phil is really nice and can crack some funny jokes :) However, don't take Astronomy unless you really enjoy the subject. It's a lot of information and very difficult. There is a lot of extra credit in the class though, which is the only way I passed :) That and the Grace of God! Very Hard Class
Boring. Don't you just hate it, when the first day of class- a teacher comments that there are too many people in class? He doesn't expect people to come to class. Lectures suck- uninteresting and even more importantly incoherent. CU please approach him. But it's e-z. Especially if you get your classmates help...not his. Gosh he's a joke.
Boring. He made an interesting topic not fun. Go to class for the extra credit. Take the tests with as many friends as possible. Easy to get an A, if you go to class.

Probably the most boring class I've ever been in, except for that beautiful Chi Omega girl that sits beside me! But yeah, other than that...bring your laptop and a pillow and you should be alright. And just to warn you the tests are hard and the homework sucks. The uncaring professor wrote the text book, so don't ask questions..he doesnt care!!
doesnt seem to care too much about the well being and clarity of the class

I like him. He's well-versed on the topic... he wrote the book for the course. He gives tons of extra credit opportunities (in class quiz questions and voluntary tests all for extra credit). The real tests are online, so are the homeworks. I'm not a science person by far but I actually like his class.
Avoid this class. Seriously. Tests are open book and the majority of students still barely make a C. Killing my GPA and I'm on scholarship...to hell with Phillip.
Flower doesn't offer any help, when you ask him a question he will just say "Read the Syllabus files"
Horrible teacher. He's not into helping you unless "read the syllabus" helps you (his syllabus is completely unorganized so it prolly won't). His tests are extremely difficult, but there are extra credit opportunities, and believe me you will need them. C for an elective is not my idea of fun.
Do not take this class. Its is one of the worst classes I have ever taken. I probably learned the least from this class than any class I have ever taken. If you take it online you will never see Mr. Flower and he can be very smart with you when you ask him questions. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!
Should be an easy A if you show up to class and try to do well on the tests (use wikipedia!). He offers up to 11 extra credit points on your final average along with 25 extra credit points on the Final. Boring, but easy.
Maybe if he would get his head out of his butt he would realize the world does not revolve around him. I think the **** haze he exists in has killed too many brain cells.
If you have no clue about astronomy, then the material is difficult to grasp. No one usually shows up for lecture, so Dr. Flower really doesn't spend much time explaining things. The tests are pretty hard, so you have to study A LOT!
The tests are nearly impossible as is the homework. Our Astr TA in Lab didn't even know how to do the HW, but I guess we are supposed to know somehow. dont take the online course...its not an "easy A or B or C" like some think. Stay away or suffer...like all of us in Astronomy now.
This class was absolutely terrible. Flower is a horrible teacher who barely teaches. The homework is sometimes ok, but mainly really hard. The tests relate to nothing he "teaches" in class, and you only get 50minutes to do it. I would not take this class, at least with this professor.
Okay okay, so I know his ratings aren't good, but this class is definitely the easiest science class offered. Astr 101 was a breeze... definitely take that! 102 is harder but all the tests and homework are online... open book, open note, open friend. If you go to class, you get extra credit. Go to class, play on your laptop... not so bad at all
very hard class. if you ask the professor a question, he will ALWAYS refer you to the syllabus...
If you read the syllabus files and don't ask him stupid questions, he's very helpful and nice. If you do the practice tests, do the seven homeworks, and objectives, it's really not all that hard. Very possible to get an A - and it's completely up to you. There's also up to 11 points extra credit on your final grade that's easy to get.
He charges WAY too much for a textbook he wrote that isn't even bound, and the bookstore won't buy it back at the end of the semester.
The online class is very difficult, especially if you are not good at "teaching youreself." Not at all interesting like I thought it would be. The book is very expensive, he wrote it himself, and the bookstore will not take it back because its not bound--seems like he wants to make a little (or a lot) extra bucks off his students.
Class is not hard at all, use lecture links on bb instead of reading, but expect no help from the professor, do the HW and try on it because even if its worse than your test grades it still counts as a test grade. but hes no good
OK so the class is boring as anything but it is an easy A. You get extra credit for going to class so go and take your laptop and work on other stuff. The tests arent too bad. If you put any effort in at all you'll get a A or B, easy.
I dont know who wrote all these reviews saying he is a good teacher, but he is probably the worst teacher i have had at clemson. The online class is super hard, and he is the biggest jerk i have ever met. you cant email him to ask him questions, and the only answer he ever gives is read the syllabus. this class is really hard, dont take it.
Horrible! I learned nothing but how to be stressed during a test. He manipulates everything in the text for the test so the information is not similar at all. You can barely understand the material so to be able to apply it is outragously difficuly. He doesn't care if you learn or not. Worst professor at Clemson.
One word :Godawful dont take anything he teaches provides no help dosent care for his students should be banned from teacher anywhere on this planet
This is the worst professor I have had. He wrote the book and thinks hes hot s*** for doing so. His lectures are extremely boring. I stopped going to them 3 weeks into the semester. Tests were challenging and he does not help when you ask for it. When you ask him any form of question, he simply says look at the syllabus.
The worst teacher ever! The notes he gives don't make sense and he bores you for an hour and half about dumb analogies! The tests are RIDICULOUS and so is the homework. My advice is to NOT take Astronomy. You are better off in any other lab science!
The class material is hard, but this professor is very clear about what he expects you to learn. I took the online class.. Make sure you read ALL of the syllabus files so you know what you can/can't make up for this class. He isn't a bad guy, he just gets frustrated when people don't know the rules of the class. Not hard to get a B.
Do what you are expected to do and you will make an A or at least a B. The material can be slightly challenging, but never overwhelming. I took him for 101 & 102 and did well. He can come off as kind of a jerk, but he really isn't bad. He just expects you to read the syllabus and know the basic rules of the class so you don't ask stupid questions.
He is a horrible teacher. He wrote the book but constantly contradicts it. On the bright side you don't have to go to lecture to do well in the class. I went to maybe 5 classes and still had an A. He also gives extra credit.
He is full of himself for some reason, but is the worst teacher I've ever had.
everyone makes this class out to be their worst nightmare. yeah it was annoying & a lot of work, but what class isn't?! you're at college to get an education. I took the online class this summer and barely read, there was no HW just tests and I ended up with a high B in the class. It was extremely easy.
His class is very straightforward-- go to class to get good notes. Take the practice test right before you take the actual test and keep it open in front of you. A lot of the questions relate to the practice test. Also keep the text book nearby for the questions that are really specific. It's easy to get a good grade if you put any effort into it.
Very helpful considering the class size. He and his course assistant answer pretty much all questions posted on blackboard, but don't expect to slack off and then ask for him to pad your grade because he won't. Tests are online and open note/textbook. As long as you take good notes, the tests are easy. Easy B, a little effort for an A.
A very easy class If you show up and do the test objectives prior to the tests. If you do the test objectives correctly, you know everything for the tests. He gives extra credit which could change your average 10 points. And all the questions you have about the class are answered in the syllabus, so read the damn thing and stop asking questions
I'm a business major, and I did not think he was hard... He's not very helpful and sometimes rude, so you have to learn and understand on your own. Loved the class, never went... still got an A. Take this class!
"refer to the syllabus." kidding, its really not that hard at all being that everything you need to know is outlined, and you can use your book for everything. On homework theres even a page number to find the answer. Class is only important for the extra credit opportunities, but you should do fine without it. Just dont ask stupid questions!
The online course is hard as hell if you don't have prior knowledge of the class. Thought it would be easy everybody who was taking it with me did bad. Don't take unless it is required or you take the inclass sections, I hear they are easier! Oh and he's very rude and not really into helping you out.
Kind of a nutjob but not a bad guy. Class is really easy; just look at the "objectives" for the test that he puts online. All tests are open book/notes and are online. Lecture is optional; go if you want the extra credit questions he asks during class. He tends to ramble though...
Worthless teacher who contradicts himself often. Just don't go to class and find answers to the test online while taking it. Don't waste over $100 on the unnecesary book. He offers a lot of extra credit, and the class is good for fulfilling the science with lab requirement.
He's an idiot but its the easiest science requirement you could take! No homework, all the tests are open book and online! you can get up to 10 points added to your final grade in extra credit! If you have to take a science, take this one with him! The class is a GPR padder!
Great online class! 10 points extra credit if you take the daily quizzes and do well on the extra credit test at the end. Tests are open book and there is enough time to look up answers to questions you don't know. Anything you're confused on you can post on the discussion board and Dr. Flower typically answers pretty quickly. I recommend him!
Terrible teacher. Gives tests on material you've never seen even if you have gone to every class. Doesn't even know what hes talking about. Makes you talk on a discussion board instead of e-mailing and wont answer your question, just say refer to the syllabus. Uses overheads to lecture but they arent organized at all just random pictures clumped.
easy class! his lectures are optional (I know TONS of people who got A's without even attending class all semester). Tests are easy (open book). 10 points to your final grade for in class quizes and a voluntary test. TAKE THIS CLASS!
Really easy class. I took online section and skimmed over the material before took test. Objectives are really helpful. Take VT and 5 min quizzes. EASY A
Too hard for an online class. I thought it was going to be easy, but i was wrong. I barely got a B. If it was my only class I probably would've done much better though.
Very easy online class. All you have to do is make sure you take all the extra credit quizzes and the exams.
I took this class online. Be sure to read the chapters before hand and highlight important facts and TAKE THE PRACTICE TESTS! I printed off the practice tests and used them on the exam because there are sometimes exam questions pulled straight from the practice test. With a moderate amount of work an A is easy.
Easy A. Just read the book, take practice tests, and do objectives. Tests are kinda hard but online so just google if needed. Most questions are same as practice test though. Can't exempt final. Extra credit test helps bring up grade if you need it. Flowers is completely unhelpful. Find other people in the class to work with!
The most unhelpful person on earth. The class is confusing for an online class.
I took this class online, thank god. I wouldn't have gotten a good grade if it was in a classroom setting. He wrote his own book, and gives out "objectives" for each test with what material is needed to know. Take the tests in groups and you can google answers, but the tests are timed. Not too bad, just tedious.
Reasonable professor with reasonable expectations. Treats his online class the way an online class should be treated. The tests are open book, so if you have a decent understanding of the chapter material, looking up unknown questions is easy and an acceptable option. He puts learning objectives online to clearly label what should be studied also.
I'm actually really surprised at a lot of these reviews. I took Astronomy 101 online with him and I pulled out an A in that class. If you study his objectives, you'll do okay on his tests. It's hard not to get a decent grade. At the end of the semester he gave an extra credit test and the final wasn't hard. He was helpful and it was an easy course.
Took the online astronomy 102 course thinking it would be interesting. It's not. The textbook is difficult to understand sometimes and the professor gives extremely vague answers to questions asked on blackboard, since that's the only place he'll take questions. Look over the learning objectives if you want to at least make a decent grade.
Had his class in 1993 and looked him up because I want my son to take him. He took a subject that was very uninteresting to me and made me love it. Loved going to his classes. The 102 class is MUCH harder though. I still love astronomy to this day.
This guy is very unhelpful and his tests are very hard for being an online class where he does absolutely no teaching or even tells you the main things you need to know
When you start this class off you think you might have a chance of doing decent. But than unit 3 rolls around and it is impossibly hard. The book is written by Flower, and it is written in very hard to understand jargon. The test questions are like needles in haystacks. I don't recommend it to anyone, unless you like C's and impossible astronomy.
He somehow managed to make open-book tests hard
Easiest A ever for this online class. Tests are taken with lockdown browser and are open notebook. There are no assignments other than the tests, which there are about 10 of throughout the semester (less than 1 a week). I think I only needed to get a 50 on the final to get an A. So easy
The worst professor. His tests are extremely tough after the first couple of units. The exam is terrible; it's too long, not enough time and majority of it is never taught.
I took this course because I needed 3 credit hours... big mistake. Do not take this class. There are 9 difficult tests and an even worse final. The objectives for each unit aren't helpful for the exams, the content is hard to understand, and there is a lot of material to teach yourself in usually a one- or two-week period.
It's an online class, so I didn't expect much and that's exactly what I got. He assigns a lot of readings and extra notes that he provides along with a lab portion that doesn't relate much to the class. Exams can be pretty difficult so make sure to highlight the material in the book (which can only be purchased from the campus bookstore).
I thought online astronomy would be my easiest class but it turned out to be one of my hardest. You have to spend a lot of time reading outside of class and the tests aren't easy, even when you take it with other people. Get ready for a test every 2 weeks
Class is relatively easy, just a pain because of all the reading and the tests can get tricky times. He does offer make-up and extra credit opportunities though. Always willing to help clarify assignments and answer questions.
If you don't read, you won't pass.
For an online class, it wasn't too difficult to learn on your own. There are tests every other week and lots of extra credit. If you need help, he emails back quickly. If you don't get a concept, he's very understanding and willing to help. The textbook is online and a major pain but I would take this class again.
I took an astronomy class in high school so I knew a lot of the material. Nonetheless all the answers to the questions on the test are provided by Dr. Flower in some form. It's a very doable class but will require decent studying for the test.
The review questions and CCs that are posted are very helpful for the tests!!
Uses an online textbook that is very difficult to use with online class. Really confusing material. Very difficult to find answers to problems. Said tests would be open book but the made us use a lockdown browser that prevented us from accessing book during tests.
This was an online class that I anticipated to be easy. It was to take care of my natural science gen-ed. The lab was completely aside from the class and they were completely separate. The professor will answer your questions, but it is completely up to you how well you do. Do NOT take if you are looking for an easy credit.
He is clear in what he expects from you. He is willing to listen to students' suggestions, and offers a good opportunities for extra credit. If you are used to reading the textbook this class is easy, but I have realized that for students who aren't used to reading the entire textbook it can be difficult and more time consuming than expected.
One thing that I felt this class was tough is that Astronomy actually involves a lot of Physics and Geography, which was beyond what I expected. Surprisedly, Dr. Flower replied emails very fast, and I felt that he was glad to answer students' questions. Material was hard, but it also related to how one study on his or her own.
The material is pretty boring and difficult. The tests are very detail oriented so it's hard to get a high grade, but that's the only negative aspect of the class.
This class was my difficult class because it requires students to learn all on their own with little to no teacher help. If you are able to teach yourself material, this is a good class for you. If you get bored easily or are not good at time management probably not the best. Wasn't the class for me but some students enjoyed it!
There are many tough tests, but there is a lot of homework and extra credit to do that can help with your grade.
ASTR 1010 is an online course so it is a little difficult but Dr. Flower is extremely helpful. Tests are based off of the textbook so make sure you read but Dr. Flower will post practice questions and tests that are very similar to those on the test and are very helpful.
There are a lot of tough, hard tests. But many options for extra credit and the homework explains most of the stuff on the test.
The text book is annoying, but if you actually take notes on it then you should be okay on the tests.
He gives a lot of extra credit, but his tests are hard.
For a distance learning course, this class is well taught. Dr. Flower keeps students informed and is readily available to answer any questions. The test questions come directly from the textbook (that he wrote) and are basically given to you in some form before the test date. As long as you read the text, it is not difficult to pass this course.
If you are interested in astronomy this is the class for you! Personally, I struggled because this is an online course that you will have to teach yourself in its entirety. I ended up enjoying it as I learned about everything non Earth bound. His tests are tough and sometimes heartbreaking.. This was my only C but his extra credit and my notes help
Professor Flower is very clear about when assignments and tests are due. However, his tests are very difficult and if you make a bad grade on one you are stuck. It is an easy B, if you are okay with making that.
Very considerate teacher with computer trouble
The test are tough and the book is online. He gives study guides and extra credit but the class isn't an easy A by any means.
For a 101 class, this requires a lot of work. It isn't necessarily hard, but it requires a ton of reading each week. Be prepared to read every chapter and take extensive notes to be able to do well on the test. Most tests tend to be difficult and not exactly from the material taught in the course.
Overall a pretty good professor. He clearly defines the work you'll have to do and the material you'll be studying. Because it's an online course, you will have to keep up with reading the textbook and taking notes. The sample questions are very helpful.
Due to the fact that ASTR1010 is an online class at Clemson, there wasn't much interaction between the students and Professor Flower. There are about 7 tests over the course of the semester along with an extra credit test. Having a test every two weeks helps to keep you on track. If you are not good at pacing yourself, this class will be difficult.
Overall, I would recommend taking this course. It is a whole lot easier than other natural science requirements, and it was online so you can read at your own pace. Dr. Flower did a good job of communicating important dates and assignments even though the course was entirely online.
Be prepared to read and prep for the exams. I did not expect this course to be as difficult as it is, but there are clear expectations laid out in the syllabus, and if you follow them you should be able to get a fine grade. The professor provides practice tests and study guides that really help on the exams.
I definitely recommend taking this class. Although, it does require a lot of reading. The chapter readings help for the tests, so take lots of notes! If you work hard and do the modules quizzes, you do well. Communication between students and the professor is great. Responds promptly and is understanding if blackboard crashes on you.
Firstly the tests in this class are extremely difficult and the text book used to prepare for them can be really confusing. I recommend that if you decide to take the class that you prepare to work with a study group or something of the sort because without one you will find the class extremely difficult. However the teacher is very willing to help
Find kids also taking this class and make a study group it will save you. Don't freak out if you get a few 60's on tests because there's extra credit. If you are like me and hate science its a good way around it but it isn't an easy A so watch yourself.
You can't get above an 80 on the tests. Don't take this class unless you have no other options.
teacher is helpful and gives opportunities to interact online; however, tests are very difficult. There is many extra credit opportunities, but you have to be willing to read and put in a lot of time to do well in the course.
This class isn't an easy A, you will need to put forth work in order to receive your A. That being said as long as you keep up with your readings, modules, and study guides you will do fine.
The class was more difficult than expected. You have to keep up with the readings but also know that some of the test questions are difficult to find in the reading.
Prepare for to buy in to the belief that astronomy is the foundation of every scientific discovery ever. And prepare to learn every aspect of a few intro physics classes and not learn a damn thing about constellations or anything actually interesting.
Test every other week with unclear questions, lengthy homeworks,
His tests were extremely inconsistent. Some were very difficult and some were very easy.
Must read the textbooks in order to even consider passing the exams. Online exams every other week. Information is a lot and pretty tough. Exams are pretty tough but he gives good extra credit at beginning and end of semesters. If you fail the tests he may give you a chance to get extra credit to improve your grade.
Not a difficult class if you actually read.
Dude wrote his own textbook. Not a bad class.
The tests are hard, but he gives sample questions that are a pretty accurate reflection of the real tests. If you read and study you should be okay. Not an easy class, but that is the point of college.
I will be honest, I was looking for an easy A class and this was not it. There is a lot of reading required in order to do well on tests. Although tests are open notes, it is pretty impossible to find all the answers during the time limit so you have to know your stuff ahead of time. Dr. Flower is willing to work with you on lots of things though.
He gives good feedback, very involved with the students and keeps you aware of what is expected. I took the class to fulfill a general education requirement and I would recommend the class to a friend.
Overall a good class to get a Gen. Ed credit out of the way. The tests are pretty average and the content of the course is as well. If you are not good at grasping concepts strictly from reading I would not recommend. Most if not all learning comes from textbook. There are no recorded lectures.
This was the first online class I have ever taken. What Dr. Flower lists in his syllabus is straight forward. The class is hard only if you don't study. Read and study for each test, and you'll be fine. The grades are from the tests, the final, and an extra voluntary test for extra credit. There is no assigned homework, which is helpful.
Dr. Flower does a really great job of organizing this online class. There is a decent amount of reading, but it isn't hard and it is clear what you need to know for the exams. The exams are open book and notes, and he gives plenty of extra credit. Fairly easy to do well in this class.
The class is online, so it is extremly difficult to get help because he doesn't hold office hours. He wrote the text book and you live and die by it
Not the hardest class ever, but DO NOT listen to advisors/orientation staff who tell you to take this class bc it's an easy lab. Flower is friendly and does his best to be helpful, but the tests are hard and confusingly-worded. I studied my butt off, read everything, took detailed notes and still made Cs. Find a study group, do the extra credit.
Lots of homework, lots of tests, lots of memorization. ONLY TAKE IF YOURE ALREADY INTERESTED IN SPACE
Do the modules, CCs, and sample questions.
Dr. Flower did a great job at quickly replying to all of his students. From what I understand, it was a pretty substantial amount for an online class. I do however believe that this class should not be online. I had a difficult time understanding some concepts, and online classes usually have difficult tests. That is just a personal opinion.
I took astronomy because I needed an easy lab science credit. It's harder than I expected but if you commit to reading you'll be okay. Take the Sample Test Questions and CC's because it helps and its extra credit. Get ready for a test every 2 weeks.
Lots of reading involved. Tests are hard. Do the SQ's and CC's.
You basically have to read 24/7 for the class. You have a test every two weeks. If you don't like reading I would not suggest taking this course. There are no lectures and you have to teach yourself the material. The test are pretty difficult if you don't intensely read and take notes. The practice test are a lot different than the real test.
There is definitely a large amount of reading required for this course. The tests are open note and book, so if you have good notes you'll be fine. You definitely need to put in some work to make a good grade in the class.
Dr. Flower was very helpful and answered emails almost immediately. The book is well written and written by Dr. Flower which is nice because he is educated on the topic and knows exactly what you're asking when you ask a question. The tests are quite difficult though.
This class boils down to a bunch of online tests. You're pretty much own your own when it comes to preparation, which is tough because the textbook, which was written by the professor of the class, is very little help.
Straightforward class, lots of note-taking.
Class is pretty easy if you put in the work.
The class was easy in the sense all you had to do was read the textbook. There was extra practice if you wanted to, but none of it was required. All the tests were online and every 2 weeks. You have to make sure you read otherwise you will fail.
It's your average online class. If you read the textbook and study the study guide provided you will do fine. 75-90 test grade. Getting above a B is somewhat of a struggle so you better work for it.
It's an online class so you're not spending any time with the professor, however he made himself very available through e-mail and made sure the class new when tests were coming up, and provided us with the information we needed to study and get a good grade. Tests are hard but if you study and put in the time definitely doable!
Not a class for everyone, only offered online. My favorite of the sciences, but is very difficult for my style of learning. Very unclear tests, no matter how much studying I've done, I've not done well. Wouldn't recommend unless online is your thing.
Of the online classes I've taken, this was by far the most fair. It was certainly a good bit of work/studying/reading, but I never felt like the class was designed for us to fail. You most definitely need the book, but it's not too expensive or difficult to read. I wish someone had told me about this class sooner so I wouldn't have taken Chemist
Be ready to be completely on your own when earning your grade. There is no tutoring at all, unless you can understand answers via email. The text is clearly published by Flower, and unless you have an advanced understanding already, good luck trying to understand it or decipher the spelling and grammar errors. I took tests in groups, still got 75s
This class requires a lot of studying even though the online exams are similar to the study questions. They are altered just a little in order to make sure you know the material so don't count on it being exactly the same. It's difficult to pace yourself and teach yourself so unless you're great at online classes don't count on an A
Overall, this class was a lot of work but pretty fair. If you read the material thoroughly, take good notes, do the concept checks/sample questions and review for the exams, it is not difficult to get a good grade in the class. It is definitely one of the best science classes available at Clemson, however, it is not an "Easy A" class.
Dr. Flower's Astronomy course isn't anything thats extremely hard. Like any other course, you get out what you put in. Study the book and you will pass, the tests come directly out the book, literally.
Took online astronomy. thought it would be an easy A. Turns out it is a little harder than i expected, but getting an A is doable if you read ahead of time before the test. I basically didn't prepare at all and am looking at getting a B.
Lots of extra credit opportunites
I took this class online because I thought it would be easier than other science classes that have actual class. It was pretty tough, but doable.
No matter how good of notes you take, there are always test questions that seem to have no correct answer regardless of what the book says the answer is. It's almost impossible to make over an 87 on a test.
I loved the class. I didn't do much work until a few days before the test. There are 7 of them, but they aren't that hard or long if you read the two chapters they are on. He gives a lot of material to help study for the test. It was an easy A for me. I took it without the lab.
Lots of exams but no homework. Tougher than expected. Definitely read textbook.
I feel like my grades were not indicative of what I learned. I took this class because I had to and I am definitely not a science person. I felt like it was a tough class to teach myself because it was online. The astro 1030 lab is a breeze compared to this. He'll help you if you need it, but it is not an easy class (which I expected it be).
The class based off of his own textbook, so he is very knowledgable when you ask him questions about any concept you might not understand. If you actually ask him what you aren't sure about, he's very prompt to shoot an email back. Tests are VERY tough and some questions are confusing, or random and nit-picky, so take notes and use study guides
Make sure you enjoy reading and can read about very dull topics for extended periods at a time. After that, take a confusing test every other week on the readings. Not an awfully hard class, just a lot of mind-numbing reading and confusing emails.
The material is not always clear and consistent with the exams, but if you complete the practice exam and CC's then you will do fine. He also posts practice sample questions that have all the topics that are covered on the exams.
There was a test every other week so you have to keep up with the material!
I took this class as Gen Ed and it very time consuming and very hard to do well on tests and I'm a studious person. If you can avoid it do so but if you need this credit ASAP then take it but be prepared to take a test every two weeks and read the entire online textbook.
Class is tough but has many extra credit opportunities. 7 tests plus the final. One every other week. Textbook is online and is written by the professor. Lots of reading. Getting a B isn't too hard.
Dr. Flower knows his material well, but the class is hard to understand if you don't have prior knowledge about astronomy. He wrote the textbook, and it has a lot of grammar mistakes, so it can be very confusing at times. He is good about communicating with students and informing you about class requirements. I recommend forming a study group!
The first two tests are extremely hard and difficult, nothing you do can help you prepare for them. I suggest studying with people to get through this course or not even taking it at all.
I do not personally like online classes so this was hard for me. However, if you read and do what you are supposed to it is not that bad.
Teaching style not good for auditory learners, virtually everything is done by reading the textbook. You will fail if you don't. He is very good about giving extra credit opportunities though and responds promptly to questions asked.
I took this class as a Gen Ed, and it ended up being harder than I thought, but it is a good class for non-science majors. There are tests every two weeks, but this is a good thing because it allows for lots of opportunity to improve your grade. Dr. Flower is good about communication. Definitely recommend a study group or it will be hard to do well
Interesting class but it definitely not an easy A. If you do what you are asked then you should receive a passing grade.
Great Class. Professor Flowers is really Helpful. I recommend that you divide up your reading assignments up daily. Test are tough, said to be open book but test are timed SO YOU BETTER READ .
The tests are hard but if you study and understand the materials well, it'd be fine.
In order to pass this class reading the textbook is a must. The professor is very clear on when you will take the test, how much time you will receive during the test, and when you can take the test will be open. One thing I do not like about this course is after you take the test it shows you what you got wrong, but doesn't give the correct answer
Definitely a good class to take as a gen ed. The tests are very difficult, so it's important that you really read the book. Professor Flower is very good about sending email out to remind students of upcoming tests.
Dr. Flower is very clear on what he expects out of students. Make sure you read all of the documents he posts before the class begins about grading, tests, etc. He provides a "Pre-test review" before every test which consists of concepts that will be on the test and everything that's on there is what you need to know. Good luck!!
Dr. Flower is very prompt when asking questions in the discussion section. His test are hard with really specific questions. Other than that, his course is great. He posts interesting astronomy related videos that are inspirational.
The class has 7 tests that are simple as long as you do the Sample Questions and Concept Questions that go along with the chapter because those will show up on the test again. It is an easy A as long as you put the effort in to study for the tests and have a good review guide to look at.
A lot of reading, but plenty of time to do it, and tests are fair.
Challenging class if you want an A... Anything else is fairly attainable according to the amount of work that is put in. A fair amount of extra credit given at the end of the semester as well.
If you read closely and find a study buddy you'll be fine!! Tests are really hard at first, but once you get the hang of it they aren't too bad.
He's very fair and understanding
He wrote his own book; it is only an ebook and it is poorly written. It is very hard to understand, there are a lot of typos and you spend a lot of your time reading the book rather than understanding the material. You have tests every other week. He changes class policy half way through the class and seems to have not read his own syllabus.
As long as you read the textbook and take notes you will be fine for the tests.
Took an online ASTR1010 class with him. The class is tough to begin with and some of the tests are challenging. He gives some extra credit, and if you ask for help he will give it.
gives a lot of extra credit opportunities which helps but the tests are very difficult and you have a lot of them
This is an online class. The professor wrote his own ebook which is very confusing to understand. He gives a lot of tests and some extra credit but it is way harder than it should be.
I think that if I would've been a better student from the start I would've done better. The tests were really confusing and not exactly relevant to the material.
Tests are really the only grades for this class + a couple points from extra credit opportunities. There is a lot of reading, but only some of the material will appear on the tests. Tests are difficult, but Dr. Flower provides study guides. The online class organization is confusing at first and certainly time consuming if you want to do well.
Only take this class if you have lots of time to do the reading, modules, and quizes. There is a LOT of reading, and the tests have only 40 questions, so you don't really know what is going to be on there. It is difficult to improve my score from the quizes to the test because there was little to no feedback.
Not a horribly tough class but not a breeze either. Do the test review questions he gives out for each test. My online section created a Google Doc and all chipped in to answer all the questions and it helped a lot. Do all of the extra credit - it adds up! Easy B. Doable A.
this is an online course, you must read to pass
The class wasn't terribly difficult, but you do need to take time to go over the study questions before you sit down to take the online tests to help you understand the questions.
This is a fairly easy class. I recommend taking it. It doesnt take much effort to get an A.
Very fast at responding to students' questions and concerns and takes time to explain it in a different way if need be, it is an online course so there is a lot of reading from the online textbook
It is sometimes hard to communicate with the professor since it is an online course, but if you do the reading and homework, it is not hard to get an A.
Always updates students on what they need to do and when they need to do it by; very organized.
Online classes are not for everyone - if you can plan from the start to dedicate time throughout the week and at least skim through most of the material you'll save yourself a lot of stress and trouble during the exams. Theres a lot of exams which helps with your grade, and tons of EC. Dr Flower is also very communicative with you too - just ask!
Very good with reminding you of upcoming dates and tests, very hard to not know what is going on in the class. Very straightforward class, but you have to read the book and do the work required of you
The professor is very helpful. He always responds quickly to email and answers any questions that I. The challenge was taking the course online. The tests are not that hard if you do the readings and the study guide.
Professor Flower is nice, but the class is not an easy A. Its an easy B with little effort, but if you want an A for sure the class probably takes about 5 hours out of your week.
Overall the class is all right if you have the time to actually devote to it. You HAVE to read the chapters and do the modules/practice tests to do well on the actual tests. There are 8 tests, so the course material is spread out pretty evenly. Like I said, just keep up with the reading and you should be fine!
As long as you read the book and do the sample questions and chapter capsules you'll feel prepared for the tests. They are extra credit anyways so thats nice too. Tests are open note so take advantage of that too. Not a bad class at all.
Only grades are tests which are difficult. There is extra credit but only a couple points compared to the 100 point tests.
I thought this course was really difficult for an intro level course. It's online and you have to put a LOT of work in to get a good grade. It's interesting if you like science
While the class is online, which I believe makes it naturally more difficult, the instructor provides some clarification on material and provides practice tests or "sample questions" that can be taken an infinite amount of times to grasp the concepts.
This class I pretty tough without the book. Study guide like material is also given to help on the test you have every 2 weeks.
Although there are tests every other week, he gives a lot of extra credit opportunities for students who need to boost their grades. I found the sample questions and CC's to be much more helpful for tests than the textbook.
This class was tough, there was a lot of reading and the tests were very difficult. But, if you're interested in astronomy then the class was definitely interesting.
the class being online makes it really tough
Good teacher who communicates quickly with students. The class lets you go at your own pace. Just keep up with the reading and you will be fine.
Dr. Flower's class is like a spaceship going up in flames. He doesn't believe in email, he's not even qualified to be a teacher, and his textbook might as well be written in hieroglyphics. You have a better chance of waking up with wings and flying to the stars than getting an A in this class.
I love astronomy, but I do not like this class. I've read the textbook and studied for the tests and I can't make an A. He may have discovered a galaxy, but he is yet to discover the dictionary, he can't spell anything right. He is confusing and his textbook is all over the place. It's online so you have to take it on your own time. Don't take it.
If you read and prepare for the tests like you would in a regular class then it isn't that bad, but that is difficult for most people to do for an online class. He was clear on what we needed to do and gave extra credit.
Took this class out of pure interest and now cant even look to the stars with anything but hatred. Flower has turned something beautiful and lets not mention an "ENTRY LEVEL" course and turned it into Dante's vision of Hell. Cheat all you want, you still cant get an A on the test. Or just learn from the mistakes of your predecessors and RUN
Overall it's an okay class you just have to be able to pace yourself especially since you have a test every other week
There are 7 tests over the course of the semester, which is the only work you actually hand in. Other than that, all you have to do is keep up on the reading, and you should get an A.
I took both 1010 and 1020 online with Dr. Flower and I really enjoyed it, however I had to work hard for my grade. If you think online courses are just "easy A's" I would take one just so you can see for yourself that you have to put work in to any class you take. I would highly recommend this teacher! He is very helpful and interactive.
I took an online class, so I had to discipline myself to get the reading done before the scheduled test times, but the instructor made himself very available if I ever had any questions, and he was really helpful.
Dr. Flower is really good about helping us with any problems that we had during the semester, but the only grades are tests so make sure you study and stay on top of things considering it is an online class
Professor Flower provides his students with a rigorous and inclusive astronomy course. As long as you study and do all your assignments, you will have a positive experience with Professor Flower. I believe he is an effective teacher and I would recommend him to a friend interested in learning more about astronomy.
The test wasn't too bad, I just feel like you had to know every single bit of the information on the chapters on each test to be able to get a good grade. But there is also modules and other things to help prepare for the test. There will be multiple test throughout the semester and it is the grades you have so the test are very important.
Despite this being an online class, Dr. Flower is very helpful and makes himself available as much as he can as an online professor. He provides multiple opportunities for students to succeed in his class. Reading the online material and completing the checks/study guides is the best way to study for the tests!
The class is online, but Dr. Flower is always available via email and discussion boards on blackboard. He does an excellent job at making sure you know what is expected when assignments are given and makes sure to inform you of any upcoming due dates and extra credit opportunities.
Professor Flower is very helpful and makes himself available for his students. This is an online class so you have to do your own work and learn it on your own. The reading isn't too bad and the majority of the test comes straight from the book. As long as you read and do all of the extra credit you'll do fine.
It's an online class so you have to read to pass. The sample questions are really helpful and similar to test questions. The sample questions and concept checks for each chapter are extra credit.
It was a lot of material to learn on our own.
Dr. Flower is a great professor for an online class! He always keep his students aware of when the test and assignments are due through emails & blackboard posts. I really appreciate that because sometimes it can be easily forgetful to pay attention to a course online. He also offers lots of extra credit which is awesome because the test are hard!
He writes the book and its all online.
He always keeps his students up to date on what they need to do and is available to help but the tests are real tricky.
I spent a lot of time reading and taking notes. His tests are difficult but if you take his practice tests, a lot of the questions are also on the exams.
A lot of reading if you choose to and you need to read to understand the test material. Find some buddies to bounce questions and problems off.
As long as you do the reading and retain most of it, the tests are honestly not bad. You do have to work at it, especially because it is an online class, so it takes work, but if you put it in, it isn't hard to get good grades on the exams. and because there are a lot of them, if you don't do well on one, it won't kill your average.
Great teacher! Wants you to learn and get the material.
Took the online course -- DON'T do it. The tests are a combination of blatantly obvious questions and random obscure things that aren't even in the book. Strongly recommend forming study groups. He does give some extra credit opportunities toward the end of the semester, which helps many people pass the class.
Confusing but not too difficult.
He is very consistent with responding to emails and sending out numerous reminders about tests! Just be prepared to read and review the textbook for every tests. You need to work for your grade
Class was completely teach yourself. Too many tests. Very hard for online class.
The class is one of the ones where the professor writes his own book, meaning that it was written for people with a basic understanding of astronomy, which we don't have because it's the 101 class. Also, several spelling and grammatical mistakes occur in both the book and the test, making it difficult to understand.
Lots of extra credit available, but the tests are tough and the material is sometimes difficult to understand.
very hard. tests unclear and does not give you answer key for test so makes it hard to study for final
There were a lot of tests, but the course was online so it is really self-taught for the most part. The tests had some confusing questions, and tended to be on the difficult side of things.
Not much to say since it was an online class, other than that the tests are very hard.
Overall, a well run online class
The class is really easy, if you do the reading and watch the videos he posts you'll be fine
Dr. Flower is good about responding quick to emails, etc. The class is super easy if you spend maybe 2-3 hours looking over the material in the 2 chapters covered in the test. There's 7 tests, each with 40 questions and it's all multiple choice. There's also extra credit at the end of the semester. Easy A!
Dr. Flower makes it very clear what we need to know for the tests. The tests can be difficult at times, but overall it is a well run course. He also gives out lots of extra credit.
Read the book before exams and take notes.
Lots of tests. Tests are difficult and hard to tell where questions come from. Lots of typos and confusion. But gives lots of extra credit.
This course was online so I never met Dr. Flower in person, but he was a decent professor. Always available via e-mail and had a student discussion board where we could ask questions and he would give us feedback. However, the tests were extremely hard. He taught as though students were all astronomers who already knew the "easy" material..
The class is semi-difficult. A lot of reading and exams make up your grade. Practice quizzes and reading makes up the hw and the quizzes are counted as extra credit. Do all of the reading and practice quizzes and you should do alright.
There is a lot of reading in this class. The only negative thing about the class is that the test questions are very ambiguous. The extra credit offered really helps your grade out.
This course was very challenging.I enjoyed learning about our universe.
The professor was very helpful when i need it and he had goof information to test over.
Great teacher. Very clear expectations. Would recommend to a friend.
good class, just read the book and stay on top of everything, clear grading criteria, and generous with EC
He was not very clear at the beginning of the semester but one thing that was good was that he gave an outline before the test so you knew what to study.
The teachers textbook was a bit confusing and the information was not clearly laid out
Your only grades in the class are the tests, but he gives a lot of extra credit.
The tests were not representative of what was in the book and you had a test every 2 weeks. Professor was not very involved or helpful and his tests always have typos. It is possible to make a good grade, just kind of annoying for what I thought would be interesting/easy.
There is a lot of information for this course. Test are very hard if you do not study or know the material. There is a test every two weeks but there is plenty of extra credit if you need it. If you do not like interaction with your professor, this is not the course for you.
The class was doable as long as you stay up with the readings. Readings are very important throughout the class.
Pretty tough class for a intro course. There is a lot of reading and you definitely have to work for your grade.
The book can be very confusing and the tests are really hard. Sometimes the questions are really random and don't seem to make much sense. If you work with other people on the tests then you can get a decent grade (mid B-low A) but the only time I've seen people get real A's is studying like 15 hours a week which is ridiculous.
Dr. Flower was very clear in what he expected from this class. The layout of the modules and the order of the flow of the class made it easy to follow along. The material is spaced out well also so you don't feel like you have to learn too much at one time.
There is a lot of information to learn for each test but he tells you exactly what you need to read in the textbook for the exams. Gives extra credit!
It's an online class so lets be real, the tests aren't terrible however everyone failed the first one so be smart, use your resources, and you'll be fine! He gives extra credit at the end so don't stress too much.
Flower is there when you need him but the class itself is just a lot of work on your part. My main problems occurred in the beginning of the semester when I had one bad test but then I got used to them and haven't had a problem since. This class is easier than chem or bio.
There are only grades that come from tests and then some extra credit opportunities which make it hard to get a good grade. The test are very difficult but there is a clear understanding of what he wants you to know beforehand with the Sample Test Questions and Concept Checks.
I really enjoyed this course. He is a great communicator and also extremely fair. I recommend this course :) Plus all of the extra credit he offers is awesome!
Only tests and not too much extra work. If you do good on the test it won't be hard.
As long as you read and complete the posted study guides the class is fairly easy. Mostly tests with a little additional work.
Easy B. Class is out of 900 points, but gives 50 points of extra credit. Tests are hard but not impossible.
Tests are a little difficult but if you do the work necessary beforehand you should have no problem.
Reading the textbook is necessary since it is an online class but sometimes the content in the textbook is not very clear so it can be hard to understand. Dr. Flower is a nice professor and he is available if you ask but to be frank the course is not very interesting so that makes it hard to focus on the readings. I suggest take notes while reading
He is a good guy. Everything is extra credit when it comes to assignments. Some tests are difficult
There is a test every other week and you must read the book to succeed in the class.
Helps you if you need it, quick at responding, tests are tricky
You basically have to teach yourself and the material isn't super interesting but it's not that difficult if you start early and give yourself plenty of time.
Really helpful professor, however I found it just a lil bit challenging for an online class.
Test are pretty hard, but not crazy tough. He gives a good amount of extra credit. Use the sample questions and study guides to your advantage!
Really enjoyed the class
This is a very tough class if you don't put in the effort. Tests are difficult, and there is a TON of reading every week. That said, it's an interesting class and worth taking if astronomy is your thing.
All tests, book needed, easy to get an A/B
Dr. Flower is a good teacher for having to teach online. Since it's an online class, it's mostly self-taught. He tries to help a lot! Read the book and take detailed notes. Pair up with other classmates to make study guides; it really helps! The tests are pretty tough, so make sure to take the practice quizzes so you have an idea of what to study.
Tests every two weeks, does give extra credit but its not much. Lots of reading for chapters.
-I would definitely recommend this class to science/non-science majors who have an interest in astronomy and would like to learn more about the universe. It is not a hard course, yet it is imperative that you actually take advantage of the assigned readings and other extra information that he posts.
More than half of the questions asked on the test did not reflect the information on the study guide.
A lot of reading, easy if you have a group to study with.
It was an online class, so you never actually meet him but he is always available to email and the practice questions help.
The class was online, and there were only tests. 7 tests plus a final. The tests are not easy, but with studying it is not hard to get a B on them. That being said, there is a ton of extra credit, so make sure you do all of it, and it can easily bump you up a letter grade.
Go over the modules before the test, they give a very good idea of what questions will be like on the test.
Would recommend this class for an easy lab science credit. Way easier than bio or chem. Do the sample questions and concept checks. The majority of the test questions come from there, and they're extra credit. The test were never too hard probably about average and he gave lots of extra credit including an EC test to replace your lowest grade.
you have to read the text in order to get through this class and the tests are very specific
Great professor. He has the best interest in his students doing well. He posts study guides for each exam and also has modules that are most of the test questions. Study the book and you will do great!
I found the online book to be difficult to follow because it was set up in articles, rather than chapters. I wish it was set up more like a textbook so that it was easier to read and go back to find things. Other than that, I found the class to be what I expected.
Class is online, but there is so much reading that it is easy to get discouraged. Tests are pretty in depth, but there is enough time to google/read for answers. Overall, easy for a science requirement, but a lot of work for just a gen-ed.
This class is not a walk in the park, you'll need to do the CC's and modules in order to get an A
Very difficult class. Would not recommend.
This is a hard class for people who are assignment-based learners as myself. The textbook is difficult to use and is not set up in a way that clarifies concepts. Class made study guides netted me solid 70s on every test. Not necessarily a hard class, but if you're looking for more than an average grade you're definitely going to have to work for it
good class to take
Doctor Flower communicates well especially since this class is online. He warns you days before the test and on the test day constantly to take it. Its basically impossible to miss an assignment. I definitely recommend.
Says he will deduct a letter grade for asking for a better grade or extra credit. Did not know they had that authority.
He responds to emails quickly.
I took it so I would have an easy A, but it was kind of annoying.
Signed up for this class thinking it would be fairly easy, but end up being a lot tougher than expect. Good course, professor knows the material well.
Love the opportunity for extra credit. Knows material well
Well I already reviewed Dr. Flower but I wanted to post an update. I got an 89.90 in the class and to most people that sounds great because it rounds up to a 90 and is an A, however Flower refuses to round up. So I am stuck with a B by .1 points. Do not take this class
He is a wonderful man. I wouldn't take this class though. I was deciding to switch to science teaching as my major and this class totally turned me off and I will be a history teaching major. His class is the worst for an online class. His book is so unorganized you want to pull your hair out. He is a fast responder though so I will give him that.
The class requires a lot of reading, but as long as you can focus on reading more than two pages a day and actually care about the material, you'll pass with 100%. The teacher is super helpful, and provides video lectures to go along with the textbook readings that you can address whenever's convenient for you.
