Good teacher, easy
excellent teacher
Tough but fair
He is mean and unfair to deal with. No personal skills what so ever . The guy thinks he is Einstein.

Great!!!
good prof
Makes me feel dumb during every class. AVOID him AND Suteanu. Avoid Geography at SMU all together.
No matter how much time I put into this class I still don't get the marks that I deserve. A lot of work on the weekends and outside of class for very little marks. Avoid this class if possible. You will be disappointed if you don't.
Really makes you work for you grade. Teaches well (i.e. explains things clearly), but poor communication skills. Very hard to talk to for help.
Unfair to deal with. Will never take a class with him again.
Avoid
he is a hard prof but dont not take his classes because of the work, you will learn loads in his class.
Giles is a hard marker, making you really work for your grade. Good Prof
I would not recommend. Has no personality.
No personality. Talks to students on a lower level than himself. The man thinks he's a genius. You may have the alphabet after your name, but it's useless if your students feel like they can't live up to your standards.
not to bad but a little anal
Most accute case of little-man syndrom I've come accross in my whole life. Does not understand the fundimentals of what he teaches. Geologists make him feel infearior. Worst, most retentive proff ever!!!

He's a hard teacher, but I still got an A+ because I worked hard
Very good prof. He is demanding. But come on people, this is university. What do you expect. Your not in high school anymore. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him. Loves what he's teaching and always makes time for you if you have questions.
Has done a complete 180. Excellent professor and great guy! Classes are more interesting and he is much more approachable!
Has made great efforts to develop a rapport with students. Very helpful one-on-one. All you have to do is ask. Prof. Giles clearly cares about what he is doing. I learned a lot.
Horrible horrible prof. thnks he knows everything, dont get on this guys bad side, he marks his students personally!!!!! Stay away from classes and try to get fired
He should not be teaching let alone be dept head. How I pitty GPY students now
Who ever gave this man a job teaching is stupid!
Not a good course at all... material can be interesting, but manner in which it is taught is horrible. Extremely hard marker and does not clarify what he is looking for at all for assignments. Avoid this course at all costs.
very easy class . easy Aplus
AVOID
He is a very nice person and if you have a problem all you have to do is go talk to him about it. His material is very clear, and eveything he teaches is on the test. The tests and labs are fair. All you have to do is put in a little effort and study and you will receive a good mark.
HOW WAS HE EVER HIRED?
A real nice guy. If you need help he will help as much as he can without telling you the answer. Material is clear and he knows the stuff good. He gives examples to help explain material along with pics from the text. Material taught in class is on the test, along with some stuff from the text. Study and you will get a good grade.
A very smart man and an easy grade if you know your stuff and study. Material is not hard, just attend class, pay attention and study an you have a good mark. He;s helpful and very clear. Prepares you good for the tests.
NOT NICE
got an A+ with this guy. not a lot of studying if you do all labs and go to all classes, 90% of the test was material from lectures, and if you need help just ask. He's kind of shy
His lower classes liek 203, 213 are very easy, but stay away from the higher level classes, he's very mean in them.
Well organized and structured course. Demanding prof, but always answers questions and gives plenty of notice for tests and time for assignments. Course objectives are clear. Very good prof.
AVOID
good guy , loves sports . test can be asy if you attend all of his calsses . written assignments are burtal . not percise in what he wants you to write about and will beat around the bush when you ask him what he is intending .
One of the best profs at SMU!!
Demanding but is very clear about what he expects from students. I find him hilarious. Super dry.
Always available for students. Goes out of his way to find ongoing real life examples and internet links to engage and expand learning. Written standards are high, because he expects good quality work at the appropriate level. I encourage any students who are serious about learning to take his courses.
Really good professor. He's very organized and you always know what's going on in the class. Labs are good too, usually pretty short and the material isn't hard. You need to go to class to get what he leaves out of the slides. Very clear explanations and fair grading.
Great Prof.... he can be intimidating....but he is probably just shy cause once you pop in his office 100 times he is great and friendly and really wants to help you succeed. I have cursed his name a few times but overall and in the end he really made me think and i really learned something from him. He would be a great prof to do an honors with
He is absolutely the worst teacher I have had at Smu yet. He puts power point up ahead of class but takes gaps out of them so you still have to take notes on the power points. He marks all or nothing and you can hardly pay attention cause he seems clueless. His assignments have little use and his tests are ridiculous.
Great prof! Organized and interesting.
He has changed this course around from how it was first semester this year. He won't post the powerpoints online so you have to come to class. Insanely clear about everything. Tests are very fair, and he gives you a question bank that he picks the test questions from. So as long as you study, it's an easy A.
Just plain awful, is not helpful in class and doesn't post ppts and it's impossible to keep up with him while taking notes. Utterly useless
Tough teacher but if you do the work and show your willing to put in the effort then it's great. Tests are very fair as he gives you a "bank" of questions he will choose from to put on tests. Show the initiative and the grade will come.
Giles is a very fair prof. His ppts are straight forward- it's easy to tell what the important things to know are. This course was pretty tough though- you were only graded on five things (midterm, 2 assignments, portfolio, and final). This made it tough because everything was weighted heavily so if you messed one up it really messes your grade up.
You will learn from the class but your grade will not reflect that. Unrealistic expectations, will dock points for the silliest things. Next to impossible to get a good grade.
Powerpoints very clear, easy to follow when you go to class.
His class isn't the easiest. But if you go to class, and put in the work you can get a good grade. He isn't the best in lectures, but he is very helpful when you go to talk to him and also in the labs. Which you need to go to so you can get a high mark.
Go to class, make an effort, you'll have no issues. He is extremely organized & trust me that works only to your advantage. More than willing to help you or give you a break when you stay for labs and work through questions. He gives you what he deems important to understand & that is what you are tested on so you don't have to memorize randomness.
AWFUL PROF. The class had an average of 48.6% on the midterm and he didn't curve the marks. Very hard marker. One word off and you automatically get it wrong. Very unclear in class and on his power points. Unrealistic expectations.
He is a great professor! Extremely helpful and accommodating to students. Gives you all of the questions prior to midterms and finals so easy to get a good mark! Highly recommend him.
He is a excellent professor! He gives you all of the questions prior to midterms and finals. I would take another class from him.
Doesn't give it away for free, but gives every opportunity to get an A. Will answer any questions. Go to class. It's not hard to predict what he will ask on his tests. Ask yourself what he's trying to say is important in each lecture, and you're set. The only questions I would get wrong were from classes I missed. Don't just rely on the slides.
If you're willing to put in the effort, you are guaranteed a good mark. He is extremely fair and provides many opportunities to get good marks. He is definitely one of the best geography professors at Saint Mary's.
Easily one of my favourite proffs at SMU. Once you understand his teaching method his classes become a lot easier, just do the work and ASK QUESTIONS whenever needed even if they seem stupid. Giles is amazing at explaining hard concepts until you completely understand them.
I took GEOG2313 (Geomorphology) with professor Giles, and although he is a tough marker, he is one of my favourite professor's at SMU. Giles is there whenever you need extra help, and genuinely wants you to do well. Giles is extremely knowledgable in the subjects he teaches, and is genuinely interested in them as well; this shows in his teaching.
Dr. Giles' class is extremely structured and is very well prepared. He does not gives it away but highlights study objectives that if followed, gets you an easy A. GEOG2306 is a very easy class if efforts are put in, and Dr. Giles takes the time outside of class to make sure you understand. Great prof!
Dr. Giles and he gives clear study objectives given in class, not on the .ppt so if you show up you will get an easy A. He gave a total of 20% in participatory exercises worth 1% each for just showing up and participating in class. Fair grader with lots of feedback, very accessible outside class, would take his class again.
Awful prof, sets students up for failure. He bullied one of my classmates into nominating him for the "best educator" award, which is entirely unwarranted. Instructions are very vague, then penalizes you for not including things he wanted even though he never explained what he was looking for. Gives rude feedback and doesn't clarify when asked. BAD
He is an okay professor. Dont bother asking questions because he will be rude in responses and act like youre stupid. He will dock points if you dont do assignments the way he wants, but he doesnt specify how he wants it done. He talks about about his other classes than he does about the class youre taking. Do. Not. Take. His. Class.
Unwilling to help. Tests are very nitpick. Incredibly mean. Makes fun of mental disabilities. Multiple spelling and grammatical mistakes in his notes and tests. Mean class grade on midterm was 58 (he was happy with that).
Giles is an awful professor. He basically calls students stupid for asking questions via email. He's extremely hypocritical as he has multiple spelling & grammatical issues in his tests and units. He's extremely rude & abuses his power as a prof, instead of trying to expand the minds of students his goal is to make the student feel inferior to him.
Other than all of the units being structured the same, I have nothing positive to say. So many spelling/grammar errors in his notes, but will doc so many points for errors in assignments. Extremely rude and condescending in feedback, notes and emails. Unwilling to help. Doing whatever I can to avoid taking a class with this prof again.
English prof? He's your guy. Doesn't matter if you know much of geography because if it's not written well enough, good luck. Oh, and if you don't write as much as he can on the topic, be ready to fail because he has his own "model answer" that is typically 4-5 paragraphs long and if you can't hold a candle to it, good luck on getting above a C+.
Terrible Professor. Has attitude in emails and is very cocky. Made students write 5 paragraphs things they learned in the course for a grade as a way to grow his already huge ego and to make it seem like hes a good professor. Hes not. Gives 150 definitions to memorize for tests but only asks for 5 on the actual test. Never take his classes. Ever.
I went to his offfice hours for help and he got pissed that I interrupted him while he was busy, and did not help me
I'm very surprised to see all of the negative feedback on this professor. I've had him for 3 classes now, one of them being an online class. He is accessible, and willing to help. He structures his courses in a very clear way, providing study guides for you to do after every class. If you do these as practice, you should do well in the course.
brutal
Prof Giles had very clear instructions for assignments as well as outlines for the quizzes and exams. He even gave us the short and long answer questions that would be on the mid-term and final, though we didn't know which would be chosen for the exams we did have them in advance and could practice them. Clear explanations and easy to email.
Grades the class like a 4th year English class. You actually lose a full mark on a response for simply missing out a hyphen in the response to the question. He fails probably around 30% of the class on all quizzes. The feedback on poor grades is based on paragraph structure and grammatical errors rather than looking at students understanding. Avoid
Brutal grader. Feedback is given on grammar and paragraph structure issues rather than understanding of Geography.
I took this course expecting it to be relatively easy for a second-year course. It was far from easy. He assigns too much work and grades them based on his "model answers" and you lose most of your marks on grammar.
Possibly the toughest grader at SMU. Only class I have ever been in where you can fully understand every aspect of the material but still almost fail assignments. Before attending his class make sure you attend some sort of advanced grammar class to prepare for it as he grades purely off of his model answers structure and grammar.
This class is run as a 4th year English class. Class is graded 90% on grammar and 10% on understanding Geography. Toughest elective at SMU simply because the prof treats it like a 4th year advanced English class. Not one point in his assignment 2 feedback was regarding geography but every single point was about grammatical issues. AVOID!
I found the class was very straight forward. He gave examples on what he was looking for and gave the questions before the tests and quizzes. I struggled a lot with my own personal life halfway through this class with a loss of a loved one and Dr. Giles was very understanding and helped accommodate with when I was able to write the final exam.
He does not use audio recordings or videos of himself, but he has thorough slides. His powerpoints are clear and he explains concepts well, and he has lots of examples. The material was very interesting. Yes, he does take off marks if you can't write properly - but this is university. You need to be able to write if you expect to do well.
inconsiderate of accommodation for people with permanent disabilities
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!! Lots of writing and tough marker. Marks papers like their a Master's English course and does not care how much you know. Points out the smallest mistakes and punishes you for them. Never shuts up about the style guide he wrote. The class has nothing to do with geography and everything to do with writing.
Very tough marker and focuses on spelling and grammar more than an understanding of the material. Many assignment through the term with nothing worth more than 20% however assigns the assignments throughout the term with some only having a week or so to do them. Expects way too much for a 2000 level course and for the amount assignments are worth
Worst prof I've ever had, rude, structure has so much written and so much information its hard to get threw and manage. he's a super hard grader, even if u think u no the info and material well be prepared for 50s if your lucky. avoid this class / prof if possible
Dr. Giles is a good thorough professor. His grading criteria is clear and gives optional bonus marks. It's not an easy course you do have to put in the work. He responds right away to questions and really wants his students to understand. If you put in the effort, he is an amazing professor.
Quizzes and assignments open book, but the midterm and final (which you MUST pass to pass the class) are closed book and very difficult but only if you let yourself fall behind. Maintain a running list of key terms and quiz yourself throughout the term. He gives you the long answer questions for midterm and exam during the term so keep practicing.
Dr. Giles was a pretty good Prof. He grades quite harshly and takes off a lot of points for small errors but what he expects in his assignments is very clear. Have to show up to class cause there were spontaneous graded participation exercises and he doesn't post his powerpoints. He responds really fast to emails which was nice.
Focuses on grading your grammar instead of the context that you've learned from the course materials. This approach robs student the chance to show their level of understanding instead of proving to him how you fluent you are in English. Arrogant, ruthless and cold. keep this in mind for the evaluation of professors towards the end of the semester
Cruel with the grading schemes, and can be quite intimidating. He does not care about how much you know, but he needs 5 paragraphs for each question. This takes away from understanding the context and focuses on grammar, waste of money and time because it is not an English course. He can retire now or change his teaching style.
Clearly loves his job, tough grader but you end up actually learning. If you show him that you care about the content, he'll be sure to care about how you're doing in the class. Genuinely just wants people to learn.
Very knowledgable guy and does a few things to help you (gives examples of questions that might be on the exams) but the volume of work in the class is staggering for a second year course. He also seems to have a pretty pretentious attitude and acts like the class is the problem for not being able to remember the obscene amount of material.
Dr. Giles is a very nice and chill guy, but his class is the most difficult one I've taken. The class is content-heavy, the tests are hard, and the final exam nearly sent me over the edge. The exam required 5 pre-written essay answers on top of an already long and hard exam. If you put in the work, you can get a decent grade, but expect difficulty.
Class format and approach is horrible. The format of the assignments will make you spend more time reading the instructions than doing the assignment itself. One of the assignments will make you download a software or if you don't want to, you can just commute to campus and waste time doing so. Grading focus way more on the grammar instead of answe
Harsh grader who grades solely off if you write out word for word what he has for an answer. Grading relies on stupid rules, grammar, and other things that for some reason affect your grade more than the actual work. You have to read 5-8 pages of information just for assignments, it takes longer to try and understand the assignments than doing it.
I understand the poor reviews. I put this class as my number one priority even though I had it as an elective. It requires a lot of attention but hard work pays off. His feedback is EXCELLENT. It seems intimidating but it is a great class and I feel like this was one of the only classes I actually retained knowledge. Don't be afraid to email him.
