He doesn't speak very clear English, but he moves as slow as the class needs him to. Allows cheat sheets on the tests which are totally from the homework--homework is only real work necessary.

Very easy course, especially if you have a good background in pre-calc. Accent can confuse you at times, but not bad at all. I didn't pay attention to one thing all semester and got an A on al my tests and quizzes. Very easy A, attendence not mandatory!

Easy calculus class. Dr. Gwanyama is a brilliant calculus professor. You do not have to buy the book, because he goes over ANYTHING you ask him to. He will repeat stuff and explains calculus in a very simple way.

lots of quizzes, you can drop some of the bad ones though; exams and quizzes are almost identical to HW problems- no surprises; formula sheets for quizzes and tests; doesn't collect homework and is the ONE prof that speaks english clearly for math

This guy is incapable of having a normal conversation. A simple question about a quiz soon turned into him yelling at me. Yells at people in class for no reason. Takes forever explaining things that are just yes or no but skips over more complicated questions. Easy but don't take if u have to go past 131 because you won't learn much from him.

I considered Dr. Gwanyama very approachable. He took the time to explain all questions. He also did not put up with people trying to disrupt or waste class time. Very respectful of the student's right to learn. Best Calc professor for School of Business Administration students!

Run for your life! This guy is the most annoying professor in the world. He yells at you for asking questions in class, he doesn't grade your tests fairly, and he doesn't know what he is talking about half the time. More than 90 percent of the class agrees with me. DO NOT TAKE HIM.

His tests and quizes are the same as homework problems, or easier, he never yells at people, answers every question you ask him!I didn't do hw for the whole semester, but still understood everything and got A!!!Definitely take him!!!

Reviews in class, but if you need help from him directly he is useless. Fights if you need to make up an exam. Really just did not enjoy the course at all. There are better calc teachers at Loyola, take them, especially if you are bad at math and really need the help. 3 tests and 6 quizzes drops lowest 2, online work too. Book set costs too much

what is wrong with people. One of the best classes i've ever taken. He explains everything clearly and tries to make sure all his students are getting it. Tests and quizzes are ridiculously easy. He tries to make them as fair as possible. Quizzes are straight homework problems, so do the homework and you will know whats on the quizzes. Easy A

Professor G is an AMAZING MATH teacher. I have taken him for 2 semesters and will take him for a 3rd. He teaches downtown, his quizzes and test are as reasonable as it gets. He gives you a study guide for the test with exactly the same problems just different #'s. IF YOU GOTTA TAKE MATH TAKE HIM. Nice nice man, wants you to learn.

Worst teacher ever. is so inconsiderate and useless if you need help. i have NO CLUE what all these people are writing about. They have to have the wrong guy. I STRONLY advise you NOT to take him. I love math. This professor is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He is very confusing and very unhelpful. I have taken this class before, got an A but it didn't transfer. I try not to listen to his lecture because it usually makes NO SENSE. May the force be with you if you take his class.

Nice guy who means well and obviously is very smart but NOT a good teacher. Can barely understand him b/c of his accent. If you're good at math take him b/c his tests are relatively easy, but if you suck at math he wont help u understand and will probably make you feel pretty stupid too.

ok, he's not the best teacher around but he's definitely not the worst! He really is helpful sometimes and he does want you to learn. His accent is so funny! Our class had so much fun with him and I ended up loving this class. I would not be upset if I took him again.

He is one of the NICEST teachers i have ever had. He cares ALOT about how you do in the class and if you put even the slightest effort you will get a good grade because its hard not to since he baby feeds everything to you. The tests are not hard at all and are a lot easier than problems we do in class, participation is MANDATORY, but it pays off.

Best Response You will get: He teaches great, answers questions great and cares for students, but for those who are average at math, his tests are a bit hard, if you get one or two wrong you will get a C. I have a C+, but you will learn. Not an easy A at all, but you will learn.

Professor G is awesome. He explains the material very well, and tries not to make his tests too difficult. He provides you with a sheet of formulas that you can use on every exam. Grade is based on 3 exams, quizzes, and final. If you mess up on one exam, it is kind of difficult to recover because the total class is out of 100 points. Take him

Ok I took this class last summer and it was hard due to time constraints. Participation, I'd say mandatory because he will embarrass you if you don't know the answer. If you move and look away from him, he'll call on you and whatever you're doing (good or bad). The good part is, u can ask any question u want and not move on til everyone gets it. No

This class is ridiculous. Most of the learning is done on your own, as other posters have said. He doesn't give you full credit for having the CORRECT ANSWERS on the tests. Uses an almost completely useless textbook. I should have bitten the bullet and taken a calc class at Lake Shore. Avoid if not good at math.

I really enjoy Prof. Gwanyama. This is my second Calc class I've taken at Loyola and it is by far the easiest. If you're good at math you will do great and if you are okay at math he will help you with anything you need. It is very possible to get an A whether you are good at math or not. Just do the practice problems and you will be fine.

He is extremely helpful. He will stop the class if one student is confuse or simply loss. He is a fair grader. Does quiz here and there, which is good for the exams. He gives hand out for che-che. You will learn regardless.

I can't figure out why so many people give the guy so much flak. If you go to class and pay attention, you'll do fine. I didn't do a single homework problem and ended up with an A. Drops a couple quizzes, which the exams are based on. The final is cumulative, but he puts out a non graded quiz with basically the same problems as the final.

Take him! His quizzes are pretty easy, he goes over problems after problems and he makes sure you're learning. He's sweet and overall a nice guy. I hate math in general, but I looked forward to going to his class. Tests were a bit more difficult, but he preapres you. You'll learn.

This is a great professor. His tests and quizzes are really easy, you just have to put in a little effort. I looked over my notes one hour before quizzes and a few hours before tests. I'm at a low A, but it's still good for minimal work! :)

Professor Gwanyama is a very clear and fair teacher. He gives 10% extra credit on each test, which is fantastic, and you spend most of every class doing practice questions. Make sure if you go to class, you know what you are doing, but don't be afraid to ask questions. Do the work, an A is pretty easy.

He's not clear in what he wants on the quizzes or exams. He is all over the place at times,which is difficult to keep up. If you are willing to teach yourself then take his class! Also, be willing to ASSIST in his class! Enjoy!

On the day of a quiz or test (which is frequent) if you go to his office hours beforehand he will not help you what so ever. He writes very sloppy on the board. The entire class looks confused and frustrated half the time because in addition to the frequent math mistakes he makes, and the poor writing, he zips through problems without explaining.

DO NOT TAKE. He seriously does not speak english, does not understand how to teach, and isn't a nice guy. I could learn precalc better from a juice box. He'll take away your phone if he sees you on it and has strict computer rules. I had to learn everything for the tests completely from the textbook, and his tests are completely unfair. AVOID!!!

Had him for MATH 118 on the WTC. If you already know the material coming in, you'll do fine- tests/quizzes aren't very difficult. If you're learning the material for the first time, do not take him. The classes consist of him doing problems on the board straight out of the textbook and he struggles with basic math.

If you don't get Widener just take Gwan Easy A if you know what you're doing. His Tests do not have any trick questions to them. There is no assigned hw just practice quizzes and tests online that are almost identical to exam. Overall, if you think you're good in math take him. Gwan is also hilarious. One of the best teachers i had this semester.

Class consists of 3 exams, weekly quizzes, and final, does not check homework. Good: makes math entertaining, does a lot of examples problems, easy grader, encourages questions. Bad: difficult to understand, quizzes are short but are worth half an exam, teaches stuff that isn't in the textbook.

Really not that hard of a class, but philip can be pretty confusing especially if you have never taken pre calc before. He is unorganized and randomly calls on people for answers so be prepared in class. He is very nice but i definitely would've gotten a better grade if he were clearer and more organized during lectures.

this class is a complete joke. Seriously if you can't get an A (B+ at WORST) and you are premed, you should already start looking into other careers. He has weekly quizzes, and three exams and a final. He drops like 3 out of 10 quizzes. He gives recommended homework that you don't have to do, but if you do them and understand you will Ace the exam

Weekly quizzes, his lectures are hard to understand because he goes fast through each example or sometimes fails to explain details, but you can always ask questions in class. He'll call you out with questions in class if he sees you using your phone or talking. To pass the test you have to study, usually the way to study is with the homework.

The class consists of weekly quizzes, exams & WebAssign assignments. I would say he is the most lenient math professor I've taken as the WebAssign assignments are all due at the end of the semester and sometimes on the day of a quiz he'll announce it will be online instead and is due by next class. Lectures are fast but he provides tons of examples

Super caring professor! He moves very fast throughout his lectures so you have to attend class and pay attention. However, he makes sure that everyone is on track in class and that no one is confused/falling behind. He gives weekly quizzes and study guides for the exams. Takes attendance. He makes calculus understandable allows you to make up work.

Honestly you are not going to find a better cal prof. than Gwan. He allows questions in class and is very patient and caring. He doesn't explain concepts as much but does a lot of practice problems which helps. Sometimes he skips through certain steps but if you ask him he will clarify. He is very clear on what you should know for exams

AMAZING!! I didn't do well in math in high school but got an A in this class. He's hilarious, laughs while he's teaching at literally nothing (he just really likes math I guess), and makes everything easy to understand. You get a formula sheet and can use it on every quiz and exam. Attendance is part of the grade but very little (5%), easy A

After taking math 117 and 118, this professor was the best for 131. He actually applies the WebAssign to what you are learning. He teaches quickly but will stop and help if you ask for it. Overall I would recommend him just be prepared to do the work of a college level Calculus class.

Philip was a fantastic teacher. I learned a lot from him. His lectures were simple and easy to understand. He got right to the material and showed you what you need to know. The tests and quizzes are just like what he does in class. The homework was sometimes harder than assessments because it is online and he can't control it. Best Math Professor!

He is the best math teacher I have ever had. All I studied were the notes and I got an A in both 131 & 132. Make sure you understand how to do the online hw and you will do well because his quizzes and exams are based on the notes and hw. He is very helpful during office hours and I wish more teachers at Loyola were like him. Highly recommended.

He gives the whole period for tests and his lectures are super easy to follow along to. He includes lots of his own problems on the test which he gives as examples in class during lecture. 10/10 would take again. Their are no surprises with him study your notes and do the hw and you will be fine. The best in the MATH department at Loyola!

Gwanyama tags you as a bad student if you don't show him that you care above and beyond the first week of class. I did fine in his quizzes but couldn't pass his tests, so he flunked me. His explanations are very fast and he is not approachable during office hours he cares more about giving you a lecture on being a bad student than teaching you.

I wouldn't recommend taking Gwan if you haven't taken precalc before because he moves pretty fast. Show that you care at the beginning of the course and he will respect you and be willing to help you out. He calls out students who are on their phones and will pick students randomly to do problems, so come to class prepared. Overall great guy.

Philip needs a higher rating, in my opinion. His class is online WileyPlus hw and exams, which I know the online hw can be difficult, but he doesn't expect you to finish it. The exams are ridiculously easy!!!! I never took a calc class before, but he made it so simple. He's always ready to help you on the hw too, in case you don't know a problem!

Professor Gwanyama is without a doubt the best math teacher I have ever had at any level of education. I always hated math, but he made sure that i could understand it and apply it to the coursework. He has a GREAT sense of humor and will ALWAYS help a student that is struggling. I honestly couldn't have passed the class without his help.

If you did not take pre-calc in high school I reccommed taking another professor due to his fast pace. He gives quizzes every week and four tests including the final through out the semester. If you don't do well on some of the quizzes he will drop a couple of them. Before a test make sure to review the study guides he gives you and wiley plus HW.

He is probably the worst professor I have taken at Loyola. If you haven't taken calc do not take him! He does not have the social skills to be a teacher and does not know how to address students respectfully, will call you out in class & embarrass you. Class is made up of quizzes, 3 tests, final, and wiley HW and he takes 5 best quizzes. skip him!!

One of the best professors I've ever had. Had him for Calculus III and he thoroughly explains complex ideas in a simpler manner. Unlike other professors, he calls out students to make sure you're on track. It may seem embarrassing, but it's for your own good as helps you understand what you missed.

You can tell Gwan tries in an online environment, but it's difficult to pay attention. His teaching style does not work for most people, and he doesn't respond to email which is essential in online classes.

Gwanyama is not the worst you could take, but also not the best. Lectures are pretty unorganized and confusing. Precalc isn't too hard so he's ok, but i wouldn't take him for any higher level. He uses wiley plus for homework so you can teach yourself based off that. Test and quizzes aren't too hard. He is good at answering questions in class.

Lectures are no different than any other math class. Homework is on WileyPlus and is horrible. But gives you a ton of review material for exams and the exams are usually much easier than the homework.

He doesn't teach very well and yells at students. He isn't understanding or compassionate and doesn't answer questions students ask. He goes through 5 sections within an hour class period and will be upset when questions are asked. If you can avoid him, I would.

I took this Professor for a class online. Hes helpful and isnt too tough on students but he does tend to be condescending at times and can make a student feel belittled or disrespected might not be intentional but it can be annoying. He is available to help students outside of class and hes willing to help you pass.

I did not enjoy gwan at all, he is condescending and always assumes that you have past experience. I had to take pre-calc after not having taken math for awhile and he assumed I knew all background information vs taking the time to explain any of it. It feels as though he is yelling at you, regardless if it is intentional, it is annoying.

Rushes through lectures and then assigns thirty to forty problems for homework and half of it he never lectured over. I spend so much time on assignments teaching myself. Tests are a time crunch and are often over the things he didn't talk about. Do not recommend

He is good and it is like any normal math class that you take in high school. His quizzes are not difficult and are based on homework. He doesn't mind questions and goes over the homework in class. Tests are online, and are two parts MC and short answer and are not hard, just have to know your stuff. Overall, he isn't the best or worse.

The quizzes are easy and his lectures break down the concepts pretty well. I struggled with calculus in high school and dropped it after a semester, but the professor made it much easier to understand. Come to class and do the homework and you should be in good shape.

If you study, you'll get a good grade. It might be scary to ask him questions (he does seem to be yelling) but just ask him, he will provide good answers and be really helpful. One of the better math profs at Loyola, would take him again.

Professor Gwanyama is good in ways that will help you understand calculus and wants you to get the information. The tests and quiz's are easy but the final exam was not English and was nothing that we learned, so be prepared.

Quizzes typically every Thursday (sometimes they're online), and Tests are online in class (a bit of an odd format but it works). The Wiley+ Homework/Quizzes reflects what you'll see on the exams. If you need math spoon fed to you, he's not the guy for you. That being said the class format is Wiley+ HW questions and then introducing new topics.

Class is awful. He lectures for 3.5 hours straight which becomes tedious & he is very stern. He doesn't give you time at all to do quizzes during class. He'll give you the last 20 minutes and many students have to use outside class time to finish. He also give the exams on Zoom but would only allow the last hour for the test and lectures beforehand

He can get annoying with participation but I feel like he genuinely cares about his students and whether or not they are understanding everything. He takes time to answer your questions. There are a bunch of quizzes and they aren't hard at all. All of the homework is on Wiley, and tests are usually in person on your computer.

This man is the most disorganized and delusional teacher I have ever had in my whole life. He doesn't have lesson plans most of the time and just pulls questions from homework that he assigns to us on things that we haven't learned yet. Also likes to rant about students in the class to "make an example" out of them and what not to do.

I'm not sure why this Professor has such poor reviews but I think he genuinely wants his students to succeed and most importantly learn. He goes over notes in class and goes over homework problems which is super helpful because the quizzes and exams are based on the homework. Show up to class, pay attention, and you will succeed.

Graded on 3 tests and a final, as well as weekly quizzes. Homework was only worth 5% of grade and you only have to get 70% on assignments for full credit. Professor Gwanyama is a relatively nice guy, but he really likes to cold call people during lectures and gets upset if they do not know the answer.

Please do not take him. He yells during lectures, goes very fast, and makes it scary it speak up or ask a question. He is always calling people out for doing nothing/ embarrassing them. I've always been ok at math until his class. After every single class I regret not being in the school of comm. Take anyone else.

Idk why he has bad reviews, he literally cares for his students and wants them to succeed. Yes he can be very strict when it comes to attendance and participation, but thats because he wants you to pass. There is weekly quizzes and homework though. He does give formula cheat sheets and gives study guides that are identical to exams.

If you can, please don't take this professor, specially if you struggle with math. The most disorganized class of all. He is unconsistent, only uses hmw from Wiley Plus to teach, and sometimes I feel he is a bit disrespectful towards some students. Professor Gwanyama explains the material thoroughly and as long as you pay attention, the quizzes and tests are easy. We had 8 quizzes and 3 exams but he drops two of the quizzes. He is pretty fair but will call on you if he thinks you are not paying attention. He is only abrasive if you are disrespectful but he is definitely not crazy.

Besides the brain-numbing lectures the final was by far the worst part of the class. If the exam and study guide were laid next to each other they would seem like two different courses. Unless you spent 4 days straight going through the 40+ homework assignments (worth 5%) and reviewed every obscure note from class you would not have stood a chance.

I think Gwanyama does care, but his class is structured horribly. Wiley is a nightmare in my opinion, I find myself spending more time figuring out what obscure way they want me to give the answer than actually getting it. The final I just took looked nothing like the study guide, or past exams, which was super frustrating. Avoid taking if you can.

Avoid this course. All he does is go over homework problems in class never really teaches anything new. Quizzes every week which he has no study guide or prep for. Will randomly call on you in class expecting you to know the answer but does not teach. If you say one word he will ask you if you are concerned about the problem you go over.

Gwanyama is a good professor. Although he does have lots of homework and quizzes, he always goes over hw problems in class to make sure we understand the material and gives out study guides before hand. If you are no paying attention you will fall behind and get called on. Just make sure you are actively paying attention in class :)

I have never disliked a professor so much so that I would love to curse in this review but cannot. DO NOT take this class, especially if you suck at math. Wait for a professor that has better reviews. All these 1 star reviews are true. Please heed my advice so you can avoid dropping a class. This is not a class you can just thug out. DONT DO IT.

He is not the kindest professor, but he is good at teaching math. The class consisted of 3 exams, 8 quizzes (drops 2), Wiley+ hmwrk, and a common final. Class isn't exactly mandatory but you won't pass without attending since he does quizzes you can't make up. Show up, take notes, and do well on the in-class exams and you'll pass.

Prof. Gwanyama is very hard to learn from. Many units felt overbearing and overall stressful. teaching style consists of doing hw problems for 80% of class and 20% lecturing on what is next. minimal office hours, also calls on students he knows aren't paying attention. tests are online. SO much homework for such little points (5% of final grade).

Prof. Gwanyama is a traditional math teacher: not very forgiving, hard to understand, and annoying. His class consists of weekly quizzes, he drops 2 lowest, homework on wiley plus, and exams. He has a very thick accent, and is hard to understand. I would get scared every time the door opened, hoping it was not him. I feel that he needs to teach a much more advanced class because he does not know how to dumbs things down or teach slowly. He will stop class and yell if you speak at all. He will try to cram multiple lessons in one day.

Lecture is very extensive and covering up to 3 units in 45 minutes made the class stressful at times, if you really apply yourself to the material you will be just fine. Review the material before class and go to his lectures to confirm what you taught yourself. Quizzes/tests are much easier than the hw.

Professor Gwanyama is very sweet. I wished my shuttle would crash everyday to avoid this class. He gets so mad if you even breathe in class, let alone talk. He cold calls on everyone. His accent is too thick to understand most material. His problem is he understands the material but does not realize most are learning it for the first time. If you can find another professor do it!

He is a nice person yet his teaching is very questionable. He 'teaches' by doing problems from the homework. His handwriting is hard to read so it is often hard to follow along and he overcomplicates problems and makes it seem way more confusing than it actually is. The grading is done so there are fews points and it tanks your grade easily.

Professor Gwanyama is a great guy! I'm the opposite of a math person and did just fine. A lot of people complain because his teaching style can be quite confusing at times but if you practice the homeworks and study guides he gives you it's easy enough to pass. The funniest man ever and is exceptionally kind when it comes to giving partial credit.
