he's horrible!! all he does is read off of his little powerpoint and if you miss a sentence and ask him to go back for a quick second or at least repeat it to you...he tells you too bad. all he cares about is his little evolution website he made. he does not offer any help whatsoever even if asked
I really disagree with the last rating. He does read off his slides but he also puts them on the web for you and he has lots of other great info there to. The tests were not easy but if you study, you will do fine. I got an A and all it took was a little work. He drops your lowest score too!
Easy class, so long as you take the slide notes, and read the chapters (and maybe take the Chapter Review tests in the book) at least once. The lectures aren't interesting, but it is biology after all. His final is composed of ten questions from each of hte previous tests :).
A gentleman and a scholar. On the test he gives you every advantage: 3 free misses, 10 questions straight from the book, a curve when it will help most students, and no curve when it won't. When it comes to science classes, you can't have it any easier than that.
Heise is a good guy. All of his notes are on powerpoint (sleep machine). He gives out good test reviews with possible test questions on them. His tests are tough though. His test averages are usually around the mid 70s. The final consists of questions from previous tests which makes it an easy A.
Terrible. Online sucked with him. He gives you over 1000 questions from study guide for exams, and maybe 10 are on the tests. The only grades for the class, are midterm and final. So, if you screw up on one, you're done! Most of the class had D's at midterm, then for final, there may have been 10 people left in the class.Recommend him,Probably not!
Online class definatly sucked! If you learn from reading out of the book than have at it! I'm thinking he was on vacation this summer and totally disregarded his class. The class went something like this: read, read, read, test, fail!
Though I didn't finish the class I thought this teacher was incredibly hot! Great eye-candy. Highly recommended.
I thought the class was easy, and fun!! He is a very effective teacher! He drops your lowest test score, and all tests are multiple choice!
Great professor! Any question you have he has a valid answer for. Just dont talk while he's talking. His brain power is intimidating. Tests arent hard if youre willing to study. All the questions derived from the notes. Im making an A and havent cracked the book. AND he drops the lowest test grade and curves when necessary. All in all, good teacher
Great class. Easiest biology I've ever taken... Test questions are derived strait from the sample tests in the book. Easy 'A.'
The Good? His BSC1005 course is a no brainer. It's like 9th-grade science. You take some notes, you use his review sheet, and you take a basic (pretty easy) multiple choice test. The Bad? Taking his slideshow/projector notes for 2 hours twice a week can be a snoozefest. Also, he is very helpful and will bend over backwards to help a student.
I took him for a summer term that was a split calss w/ DR. Ritter, he's was in the second part. WELL WORTH THE WAIT!! HOTT!! The slide shows are murser but lust looking at him keeps you glues to your seat. Notes, tests, and class pretty carefree, did I mention he is SOOOO hot!? Bad news: he's married....
I missed 1 test, got a 79 on my lowest test and still got an A. The answers to the finals comes directly form the tests you take. I am not going to lie and say that the class is easy because there is not a science class that is, but he will teach you what you need to know to pass his test. He also give you extra credit for online quizes.
A lot of info, but it's interesting. So long as you pay attention enough to take good notes and you study, it's a breeze. The book is almost completely unnecessary, aside from study questions at the end of the chapters.
He uses powerpoint slides for his lectures. The lectures are designed for the tests. The tests are fill-in-the-bubble,scan-tron.He is very proffesional, always wears a tie.
very clear and interesting lectures. He relates everything to real-world senarios to help students understand. Tests are straight from notes, so there are no surprises but a lot of studying. Very nice person.
Simply a good proffessor. Will go to great lengths to help a student. His lectures cover only what will be on the tests! Very straightforward. I enrolled for this course via on-line. I was latter told by Dr. Heise, that I was not on his roster. So he went completely out of his way and helped register. He's simply a no-nonsense instructor.
if you have to take bio, take it with him. power point presentation, easy notes. final is made up from all the other tests. test are multipe choice, no writting, or diagrams!
with this class, you have to have nothing else going on in your life.
Take this online Very easy A. don't need to buy book. All you have to do is retake the tests until you've memorized every question in the test bank. He tells every class that his online quizzes and tests are from the same test bank. Memorize the test bank and you'll get an A without putting in very much effort. Maybe 20 hours or so.
Good teacher, lots of material. Tests were hard. Very clear in class, uses powerpoint slides. I suggest using a laptop to take notes. Just to much to write down. Labs were on Friday, and they were fun. Some students didnt like the smell and such. Had a few drop after a couple of tests. Study and you will do fine.
He is very thorough. He also gives examples that everyone can relate to!
Okay, this class goes over some very dull material. Mr. Heise knows this stuff is boring and he tries to keep your attention. The lectures are extremely boring, yet you have to go, because the main thing you should study is your notes!!! He also gives a lot of tests and you have to show up to find out when the tests are.
Textbook is next to useless so dont buy it. Take all notes and dont miss any class or you will be left behind. Print out his lecture outlines and study with those and yoru notes and the class will be easy.
He is hilarious! Has an extremely dry sense of humor. Class isn't an Easy A but if you study an A is totally attainable. Lap Practicals seem hard, but aren't. Just go to class!
Dr. Heise is terrific! He's straight forward and to the point! He's clear on what must be studied and his lectures are interesting.
His Zoology class was great! He's smart, enthusiastic, and not bad on the eyes. The notes are thorough and contain all test material. He's very generous with grading, but you must study well for lab practicals. Overall easy class if you're interested in the material. Great alternative to Principles of Biology 2.
Do not take this class online. The midterm is over 18 Chapters. The book is some what usefull, the questions on the midterm and final are from the questions off of the quizes. You have to make sure you do show activity on D2L becaue I did not for a week and a half and I got a letter sent to my home. The midterm is a 100 questions and is hard.
If you don't like biology like me, and know how to memorize you will do okay in this class. He also has extra credit so with effort you will pass.
Don't do it.
Online: You are on your own; however, he will reply to e-mails. Mid-term and final covers 16-18 chapters each and they are 100 questions but they are straight from the test bank. If you can memorize then you should pass.
POWER POINT NOTES. ALL OTHER INFO IS ONLINE & IN THE BOOK. UNLESS YOU WANT TO REVIEW 20 CHAPTERS IN 24 CLASSES AND MEMORIZE OVER 50 FACTS PER CHAPTER, YES, PER CHAPTER AND HAVE 3-4 CHAPTER TESTS...DON'T TAKE THE CLASS! I FIND THE CLASS INTERESTING, BUT FOR A 'FLUFF' CLASS, IT IS JUST TOO MUCH!!! DR. HEISE PRESENTS THE MATERIAL WELL! GOOD LUCK!
He is a very good teacher! He loves what he does and the animals he talks about! BUT (yes there is a cathch) his tests are extremely difficult. I wish he would review before an exam bc there is so much information you study, study, study but what you studied(most of the time) is not on the test. He is friendly(not bad on the eyes either!;)
The online class is a lot of work, but it was clear and easy to learn.
Dr. Hiese lectures alot. Not a bad class, but not a great one either. Just straight powerpoint and the tests. The tests are killer though. Study your notes and the book like madmen and you will do fine!
His class is mostly notes. I had a hard time with the tests. It all multiple choice but its really hard. I made C's and D's on the tests. I had no problem with the teacher. He offered extra credit towards the end. If you want an A or B you'll have to study for his tests.
If you are not a science major then the easiest way to take this class is distance learning. If you can memorize then you can pass! The midterm and final are 100 questions(m/c).
I took him fast paced on friday and saturday. there was extra credit offered the whole time but I never did it. The tests are straight from the notes and you really don't have to have your book with the notes. took 5 tests and the lowest one is dropped. No studying and skipping the final test and skipping a day landed me a B.
Found Dr. Heise's Biology class very interesting. The 6 week course was challenging, but he told us up front what he expected and how we could get extra credit (complete the online quizzes for each chapter). The quizzes were helpful in getting a passing grade on the chapter exams. Students that struggled didn't do the quizzes or didn't study!
ALWAYS on time, ALWAYS prepared. COMPLETELY organized. Interesting lectures, great sense of humor. To get an A: show up, take notes, review notes/ chapter quiz. EASY A. TAKE HIM! He's the best and he's AWESOME!!
Dr. Heise is awesome. His lectures take up the whole class time which isn't cool, but its all in powerpoint and he lets you use a laptop to type them.tests are 50 questions each and come right out of the notes, do self quiz at each chapter. Overall its a simple class, if you spend about 10 to 15 minutes a day studying youll get a b or a Take him!!
Pretty much what the last two comments said. He rules.
Had him for general bio. The majority of the class struggled to stay awake while taking notes. Boring class overall. His tests were very hard and unless you wrote down ALL of his notes both powerpoint and verbal, and read every word of the chapter several times, it was very difficult to pass. Very long, boring class.
I'm a slow learner.I HAD to take this class and I dreaded having to taking it, but it turned out to be really simple. He tells you exactly what you have to do: show up, take notes, read the chapter, study. I got an A!! The only time it was difficult was because he is so easy on the eyes that I lost my attention span. HAHA.
His tests are way too long! I took very good notes and studied, but most of the stuff on the tests were not in the notes.
He's honestly not a bad professor at all. He's straight forward with what he expects and doesn't enforce attendance. I missed many classes, never did the extra credit, and never even opened the book. I still pulled a C easily and I actually learned a lot. I'm just an average student so if you apply yourself there is no reason why you shouldn't pass
His class is so hard and the test are way beyond hard.
Lectures from powerpoint presentations. Tests are directly from the notes. Not a very hard class if you take decent notes.
Took this class online because I thought it would be easy...not so. You need to read the book and take the quizzes online MULTIPLE times! You can take the quizzes till you get a 100 but you need to continue to take them till the midterm or final. The Midterm/Final questions are the EXACT questions from the quizzes. Study those and you'll do fine.
Dr. Heise is a great teacher and even a better person. With that said, his class is super hard in the sense that he gives you so much material to memorize. Conceptual skills are not needed for this class, it's pure memorization...
awesome teacher!!! he is soo helpful and really cares about how you are doing in his class. labs are really cool too. however, it was a really hard class just because there is so much material to learn. and he expects you to know it well. so be prepared to memorize A LOT!!
Got a C and I had a 4.0 going into it. He may be a good teacher for someone else, but I cannot get much studying done on the weekends and ALL 7 of our tests were on Mondays. If you have to miss a test, he is not sympathetic to the reason, and will not let you make it up. He's not terrible, but I am disappointed. Thought I would enjoy this class
You will read alot over and over, know the answers to the question throughout the chapter and at the end of the chapter some will be on the test. Class is not easy, labs are fun.Hope you enjoy reading becuase you will need to basically know everything in the chapters. Lab practicals are not that difficult, pay attention take pictures of specimans.
If you're interested in Biology, I strongly recommend Dr. Heise. He's one of the best professors I've had here, especially out of the Bio teachers. He's incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, organized, and he clearly loves his job. The class is not VERY easy, but if you study enough it shouldn't be too difficult either.
I honestly don't mind the class. The tests were a little difficult but most everything was right from the text. His examples are always funny and he seems like a good guy. It's basically one step further than 9th grade biology.
Tests are way to hard. You are on your own with very little help from him.
Beyond Hard. Unhelpful and rude
This guy has expectations that are crazy. Its amazing that half of the class is failing. And the withdrawal rate is staggering. Find someone else thats more helpful
Took it online. Only had to do quizzes which are right from the book. Mid-term and Final are exactly from the quizzes, so retake the quizzes many times. Responds to e-mails quickly.
Please understand before you sign up for this class that it is not as easy as you think. It is a lot of reading with a lot of biology terms you have never heard before or will ever want to again. Not a horrible experience though. If you read the chapters and take the quizzes you'll do fine. The actual tests are much easier than the quizzes.
After taking Principles of Bio 2 with a different professor where everything on the test came straight from lecture it was a difficult transition. I took Dr. Heise for General Biology before principles and although principles is a harder class his lectures still consist of general powerpoints. Everything in the book is fair game for the test.
He drops your lowest test score, so do well on the first six and you don't have to take the final.
Heise is a really good teacher as long as you put in the effort. The tests are extremely hard, but there are quizzes online that you can do for up to 5% added to your final grade. The answers to the quizzes can easily be found on quizlet. And if you can borrow a former student's tests as a study guide DO IT.
Great professor. I am terrible when it comes to science but he made it easy to understand. His notes are detailed and his tests are fair. He makes the class fun and bearable.
While this professor does seem very passionate about biology, it is expected that you do much more than review notes outside of class. Reading all the discussed chapters in the textbook and taking extra online quizzes are definitely necessary .
Took this class online and I will say, the reviews scared me. I realized though after a few weeks that it wasnt bad at all. No HW, just quizzes and tests, all online(unless you chose otherwise). Quizzes are unlimited attempt and the quiz questions make up the test. Ctrl+F and quizlet/google seemed to do the trick if ever I was lazy and didnt study
Quizzes are 20 questions and there is about 4-6 each unit, Only three units . Test are 50-70 questions only three test. EVERYTHING is on quizlet. Super easy class !!!!
This class pretty much tests your ability to memorize. Basically memorize the entire book. He also doesn't cover everything thats on the tests. He says everything in the book is fair game but yet he doesn't cover everything. He lectures straight off of powerpoints too. There little to no schedule. Labs are cool but hard to study for.
Dr Heise knows his stuff, but it seems he is in competition with Dr. Ritter on making tests as hard as possible. If you want to pass his tests, you need to be memorizing the lecture notes, and questions in the book. If you want an A be able to concisely explain everything. If your answer is long, you are likely wrong.
I took BSC1005 online with this instructor. Be prepared to study! Lots of memorizing, but an A is certainly achievable with the right effort. The videos, FREE online textbook, and study guides were more than ample to learn the material. Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Heise is a great professor, and is very knowledgeable about biology. However, be aware that his lab practicals and tests are fairly difficult considering the amount of information he wants you to memorize. Studying is a guessing game since the study guides are long, and he expects you to study what wasnt gone over in lecture in the text.
study, study, study. Tests are about 50 questions. The only things that are put in the grade book are extra credit quizzes and the test and I believe he drops the lowest test score. It's not hard to get a good grade in that class just take notes and STUDY! He's also very helpful and makes it easier to understand so don't hesitate to reach out.
I got an A+ in Principles 1 but this class is so different. He highlights about half the test during the lecture and the other half is in the book. Not much of his tests contain the chapter outlines posted. For the essay questions, you have to put exactly what he wants word for word. It's not that he teaches bad, he just made this class too hard.
He is an EXTREMELY difficult grader, takes off points over specific words and will nitpick. Gives 0 credit if you say something not from the book even if true. Lectures are long/dry as he reads from powerpoints, and a chunk of the test is on material from the book. I definitely wouldn't recommend him as he made such an interesting subject a pain.
Great prof. Do the work and you will pass the class. Would recommend Dr Heise for online biology class.
Ughhh. Just .. ughhh
Took his online course. His quizzes and tests are pulled from the same data bank, so you'd think it would be easy studying for his tests! NOPE. It seems like every other question is a "which of the following is not true" or a trick question. I read the material, studied, printed his quizzes out to have some actual questions to study from. Got a B.
Dont take his online course. 75% of the grade is exams that are recorded. The exam questions are pulled from the quizzes, but theres hundreds of them. After failing 2 exams I memorized 300+ questions only to get a D. I emailed him multiple times for help and he didnt even bother answering my last one. No curve or ec. Almost graduated with a 4.0
I would say Im pretty good at science and math, but his online bio course was extremely difficult. Took the class because he had a pretty good rating, but it looks like this Spring semester wasnt that great for anyone... not sure if something changed, but hopefully he makes the class a little easier.
I loved Dr. Heise for Principles of Biology 2. There are 5 tests, one is dropped, and two lab practicals which are pretty difficult. The lectures are very long but very, very informative. He is also hilarious and overall a fantastic professor. I definitely recommend him. The labs are really good too.
Overall good class. No papers or HW. The class consists of chapter tests and exams. A lot of content to absorb but chapter tests are open book and allow multiple attempts to boost your grade. Dr. Heise was very clear about the Online class structure and what the expectation of the course was.
Do not take. I ended up withdrawing from the class and taking a W on my college transcript. The quizzes are fairly easy, this is a ruse. The tests are extremely hard. I studied for three days basically nonstop and still got an F on the test. I am a straight-A student with a high GPA. I don't have any advice except don't take this class.
Took the Online class and its self-taught. Broken into 4 units with 3-4 chapters 1 quiz per chapter 1 exam per unit. You need to read the material and understand it to do well on the quizzes. You can take the quizzes multiple times and review the answers to know what you got wrong. Highly suggest taking the quizzes till you remember the answers.
Lectures the entire class time. 6 tests & the final. Drops the lowest grade. Questions on the tests are basically pulled right from the lectures. His tests are very straight up. Take good notes & you should be fine. He explains things very clearly & provides good examples. Great teacher who wants you to succeed. Very passionate about the subject.
not great. took notes every class but the test wasnt really about what he lectured. you had to read the book to actually prepare for the test. dont take if you want an easy professor because you actually do have to study and look at the book.
He gives all multiple choice exams and the final consists of questions from previous exams. Outline for notes to fill in during the lectures consists all information tested on the exams. Great teaching style and personality.
Dr. H is one of the best professors I've taken at NWFSC. Don't get me wrong, the class is hard, but you learn a lot, and Dr. H truly cares about students' success. There are 5 tests, including the final, which are worth 65% total; the lowest is dropped. There are 2 lab practicals which are like mini tests but are pretty easy. Study, study, study!
Amazing! There is no homework besides reading the textbook and he has PowerPoints/videos for extra help. There are four exams and no final. Each exam is on 3-4 chapters which have quizzes. The quizzes have infinite tries and the questions used are the same ones in the exams! Read the material, take a bunch of quizzes and you WILL get a good grade.
He is a great lecturer. Class is fun and I learnt alot. However, this class is so hard. I spent an entire week studying non stop for exams, and barely got an A. Sure, an A is good, but this class basically became my full time job and wasn't worth the effort. I would go to UWF for this course - would be far easier.
I've heard good things about his in-person classes, but his online class was mediocre at best. The tests are taken from the quizzes, but the questions you get on the quizzes are randomly generated-- meaning that you could take the quizzes 20 times and still not see all of the questions. The textbook is free online, but it's a disorganized mess.
He would assign 8 quizzes and a test all due on the same day. The questions were hard, and the tests were monitored by a lockdown browser. There was way too much information in a single chapter and it was very difficult to remember everything.
This class definitely puts you to work. You're assigned a ton of tests along with an exam every month. There's no final because of the exams every month. However, you will spend HOURS doing notes. There is WAY too much in a single chapter to go over and memorize for the exam and tests. The quizzes are fairly simple, but he offers extra credit.
Save yourself. He only offers quizzes and exams. 4 exams a semester and 4 quizzes a month. It drops your grade horribly. Please take another professor. I would have a 3.9 if this class wasn't weighing down my GPA. The exams are ridiculously hard and you're recorded while you take them.
This is a tough class but he does give extra credit. Get ready to spend a lot of time studying.
All his tests are trick questions. He gives 4 lessons per chapter and lessons include around 40 different topics. 160 topics to memorize when a test has 60 questions. its impossible to study for a test. take a different class if you need a lab or science credit. the textbook is a mess the tests are worded horribly. you'll be lucky to pass with a c.
Dr. Heise was amazing! He made lectures really funny and easy to follow along, and his class was easy to pass because his tests went directly from his lectures. As long as you took notes, which were displayed right on the slides with the important terms highlighted, you would be good.
Take him for general biology. The class was super easy, I didn't even try. He drops your lowest test grade, including the final.
Pretty easy class you just have to study for six exams
This class is death by PowerPoint. Six exams and one final, and no other work. Aka- one bad grade and your grade drops significantly. Nothing in the notes will be on the test.
Dr.Heise was great for gen bio. Tests are exactly like the lectures. You have to make sure you take good notes and study. He drops the lowest test grade, can be the final.
The class is difficult due to the sheer amount of information that you are required to memorize. He gives out test study guides with an amount of information that is not realistic to memorize. The best strategy seems to be pouring over the book relentlessly. If you have a viable alternative to take this course at another university, do it.
Dr. Heise is a professor who fully grasps his subject area effectively teaches it to his students. His examples are creative, and his class is organized. His class consists of PowerPoint lectures, and 6 tests (1 of which can be dropped). He cares about student grades but expects you to put in the effort. After all, we are college students.
He was funny and honest. He LOVES animals and if you get him talking about reptiles after class he won't stop lol. His lectures are very note heavy and he doesn't post his PowerPoints so even though attendance isn't mandatory it's REALLY IMPORTANT.
Professor Heise's class is a good option for general biology. The lectures are organized, and he explains the material clearly. While the tests can be challenging, the ability to drop the lowest grade and use tools like unstuck study for study prep make this class manageable.
He will tell you in the online course that if you keep retaking the quiz you will be able to see all the questions on the exam. What a lie! I left with an A but I did NOT need to take each quiz 40 times for the exam to be completely different. Great and funny teacher but would not take as a professor again.
He breaks concepts down into their parts with understandable and not boring examples and doesn't go too fast. Open to questions and has absolutely no problem elaborating but doesn't really expect engagement from students. 6 exams and a final, the lowest of any of those is dropped. Tests are the only type of assignment. Go to his office, it's cool.
