Very nice professor, but this is his first time teaching this class and he definitely struggled. Goes thru powerpoint slides very fast. HWs are borderline impossible, but he posts videos of how to do them after the due date, exams look like the HWs and you get 5 hours to finish, but they are very difficult. Reading the book helps a little.
Definitely a tough class, three homeworks, two midterms and a final. The final was worth 57% of our grade. Has pre recorded lectures before class then you go over questions in class. Hemmer is a nice professor though and graded on a curve. Ask questions and he will be more than happy to help.
Good professor and very open to questions. However, homeworks are extremely difficult and time consuming. Tests are open book and similar to the homework questions with around 10 hours to complete
You will be learning this course by the textbook one way or another. I stopped attending class because he just read the textbook. Exam questions are either extremely easy or difficult no in between. Hope for a good TA you will learn much from lab.
Best professor so far. Very clear requirements with detailed feedback on assignments. Super easy grader with lots of partial credit
Started teaching stuff outside the syllabus, but the exams were online and from Zybooks.
The lectures are over the material from the textbook, if you read the zyBooks you will be successful in the class. The exams are online and open book, they can take a while but if you follow the zyBooks you should get an A. Overall, if you are prepared to read the zyBooks a lot you should be fine in his class.
This section of Circuit Theory was a bit odd, but I believe, besides a few unclear instructions on exams (which he will clarify in class), Prof. Hemmer gave all the resources for one to succeed in and learn this course. I wish there were more videos of worked out problems; however, even still this content is widely available online. Very self-paced
So, anything you hear about this class from Spring 2023, do not expect the same thing when you take the class. This class was a disaster this semester. Hemmer had a week to prepare for an entire semester. Hemmer seems like he loves what he does, but, after 2 weeks, I stopped going to class since everything was in Zybooks and lectures were useless.
I spent the entire semester not knowing where I stood since exam grading took FOREVER and it turned out he never graded the HWs. Lectures are boring and useless since it's just Zybooks, never learned anything from him and everything was self-taught. I learned more from the labs than his lectures. He does make this class pretty forgiving though.
Thinkers will have no problems with this professor. Gives open-note tests that were graded very generously. Doesn't grade homework, and easy ZyBooks assignments to boost grade. While the homework and tests are admittedly nigh impossible, Philip grades so leniently that you will almost certainly get an A writing only a few equations.
Philip Hemmer, a very kind man. Sometimes his patience was tested but he never faltered. He always showed up to class with a huge smile. Never took the elevator that's for people with short-term thinking. Phil encourages his students to have long-term goals, because that's when you make interesting discoveries in fields you may not be interested in
Ya boi Phil would show up to class, ramble on for an hour and 15 minutes about how to solve a problem, all while producing incomprehensible notes on the slides we're expected to follow, then acts surprised nobody knows what is going on or how to actually solve the original question
Hilarious professor, his first lecture made me laugh the entire time. His homework and tests are extremely difficult, but he doesn't even grade them so it evens out. Nonthinkers will struggle in this class, which he frequently pointed out.
Hemmer is an engineer at heart, he designs his homework so that it is very simple if you know how to think, but if you don't think they can be very hard. You must learn how to think if you want to do well in his classes, but it is SO worth it because he models his class after The Real World (TM).
Professor Hemmer is a famous physicist and his teaching is deep. I attended every lecture and learned much in this class.
His lectures are well organized and certainly more than sufficient to learn how to do the homework problems. Attending his lectures helps to succeed in the exams. There are many students in this class justifying their rather limited learning ability by rather low scores of this professor.
Hemmer is an awesome professor whose presentations capture the world's imagination. He often uses Mathematica to help him solve equations in class though, since he says he can't do algebra. The homework assignments can be tricky, however, once you become a thinker all the problems will collapse and become simple.
Unfortunately, Hemmer had to miss this week to share his knowledge of nitrogen vacancy with the world at a conference. However, because he cares about his students, he took time out of his day to pre-record lectures while also giving a homework assignment with the patented Hemmer "real life example" to prepare you for a real job.
Hemmer is a man who has selflessly dedicated his to life to the service of mankind. Hemmer has always held to the hope, belief, and conviction that there is a better world and future just beyond the horizon. His homework may seem hard, and his teaching may seem nebulous, but it is for the sole purpose of teaching his students how to think.
Dr. Hemmer is such an inspirational professor. His passion for transforming his students into thinkers is evident in his real life example homework assignments since your boss is not going to hand you a ZyBooks problem. Once you know how to think, Hemmer assures you that any problems will just collapse! Would highly recommend Hemmer.
I'm not sure what the thinking is about, but I thought Hemmer was alright. He just read zybooks, so you didn't have to go to class. Tests and homework could be a little confusing, but you had like 10 hours to complete them and they were take home. Hemmer also gave lots of partial credit.
Phillip Hemmer is the best professor in the ECEN department. He may seem intimidating at first when he compares a thinker and a nonthinker, but rest assured that he does care about his students, as evidenced by him modeling his class after the real world. He wants to set you up for success since no boss is just going to hand you a textbook problem.
Spring break is nice because we get a temporary break in assignments. However, this has an unfortunate consequence on several days without Hemmer's class. Thankfully, Hemmer's class will resume soon so we will get to learn how to think (Which we might have forgotten how to do over break)
I'm honestly just rating because the memes are worth the torture this class brings
So glad I took Hemmer. Left this class knowing how to think and make the problems of the world collapse right before my eyes
Philip Hemmer is GOAT professor. A lot of people genuinely don't know how to think his class. His homework and tests are not even that hard. Just use your brain and think a little!
Unfortunately, Hemmer delivered some devastating news today. Although the semester still has 2.5 weeks, Phil only has 1 more week of class. He will be absent for the remaining 1.5 weeks, which makes me wonder if he has another Supreme Thinker conference. It is also possible that he just wants extra NV research time after a successful thinker class.
my homie philip hemmer! where do I start with this legend? hes so organized that he throws all of the class material on a google drive on the very first day. i also loooove how he uses mathematica and excel on his example problems instead of boring handwriting LOL. take this man yall bro is sooo fereee
Lectures were very confusing, but you can find lecture examples to complete the hw and exams. Exams are take home and open note. Grading is a little inconsistent, but he doesnt give graders an answer key. Said he might cancel the final. If you make friends in this class it becomes 10 times easier. Or you just gotta be a thinker to take this class.
The sole guardian of truth and sanity in a world of lies. While other professors have capitulated to the whims and wishes of their nonthinking students, Philip Hemmer remains a steadfast bulwark of the old ways. His labs are not difficult, but they do require you to think. The lab manuals do not hold your hand, like they do in other courses. Think!
Phil is such a kind guy. He knows that not every student possesses the thinking ability to make the homework collapse and become simple. To help these people, he assigned an additional homework. This assignment, which is purely extra credit, has the same weight as an entire regular assignment, although the questions did require you to really think!
Unfortunately today was the last day of the class, as he informed us he will be out of town for the remainder of the year. I came into this class as a basic nonthinker, but through his constant encouragement, I became a confident thinker, capable of making real world problems simply collapse. Highly recommend!
Philip helped me understand that I really do know how to think. He assigned our last test today, which was packed full of valuable thinker questions covering a wide range of topics. In a way, this was a continuation of 214, as many of these questions had topics initially covered, such as MOSFETs. However, this test covered the physics, not circuits
After being absent for a quarter of the semester due to having to lead the National Supreme Thinker Convention (NSTC), good ole Phil "The Thinkerator" Hemmer made a triumphant return, much to the relief of students who had been aimlessly wandering the academic wilderness without their philosophical GPS.
Ever since the advent of the No Child Left Behind Act, professors such as Philip Hemmer have noticed a precipitous decline in the thinking abilities of their students. These brave men weather an onslaught of slanderous reviews, and have to drag their students kicking and screaming into enlightenment. Your boss will never hand you a Zybooks problem.
It just isn't the same without Hemmer anymore. Unfortunately, we had the 370 final earlier in the week. Unless we want to venture into the world of experimental optics, it seems we will never have the opportunity to take Hemmer again. Despite this, I can still rest assured knowing that I'll always be a better thinker because of him.
Phil was by far the most amazing professor I have had in my college career. His constant encouragement to be the best thinker possible made the seemingly difficult material collapse and become simple. I feel that, after taking Hemmer, I am well prepared to successfully complete my college journey and graduate in to the real world.
Hemmer is the best professor to have ever lived! I learned so much about nitrogen vacancy and thinking during his 370 lectures that I could easily be hired for a senior researcher position tomorrow! He deserves his own Hemmer-tier on the ECEN professor tier list. My heart breaks for whoever isn't able to register for the GOAT.
It was a really rough class and lectures were difficult to follow due to the course work being difficult. While the professor is fine, I couldn't understand or follow anything. Exam are like homework but longer. The material is on the lecture, but often has material missing. Try to avoid, or have a really good background in quantum physics.
If you can not do algebra by hand, fear not, this is the class for you! Hemmer readily admits he can not do it either, so you get plenty of Mathematica examples so you too can become proficient, never again having to attempt algebra the old fashioned way!
Hemmer cares about your grade. He offered extra credit to the thinkers who attended class every day to learn much from his lectures. Phil also stated that he might boost your grade if you are close to a cutoff, knowing that every thinker wants the satisfaction of a good grade. Because they took time to show up to class, he wants to reward them
Philip Hemmer, one of the greatest thinkers in the ECEN department. Hemmer wisely tells his students that grades don't matter, but also gives them an A to reward them for taking him. Unlike Mark Weichold, who tells students that grades don't matter, but gives them a C.
Just a reminder that course evaluations are coming due. Make sure to let them know how much of an inspiration Hemmer was as well as how he was such an organized professor. He always showed up on time with his material posted ahead of time in a neatly organized Google Drive. This made it easy to review all material, both before and after class.
Hemmer was easily the worst professor I ever had. His lectures were absolutely useless. The grading of homework was confusing because he did not tell us what he took off points for. Exams were all take home and online, but each one took the entire day to complete so you better hope you don't have anything else that day.
Phil was the most motivational professor I had in my college journey. When I struggled with problems, he just told me I need to think a little, and sure enough, it worked! I was then able to take that simple advice and apply it to other classes and projects, making them all collapse and become simple as well!
Hemmer was simply one of the best professors I've had the honor of taking. His assignments were super easy if you knew how to think. My favorite part of his class was the heavy integration with the real world. Rather than assigning unrealistic textbook problems, Hemmer made us think a little, but his questions are more representative of a real job.
Philip Hemmer is an awesome professor! He frequently uses math software to help students who struggle with doing algebra by hand, which also has the added benefit of making his work easier to follow. Although his handwriting can be a bit hard to read, the code makes it so that it is very easy to follow his train of thought. He is super accessible!
For anyone who doubted Phil, just look at their GPA. Weichold, who is supposedly better than Hemmer, only achieved a 2.662. The Supreme Thinker, however, had a 3.337, 3.582, and 3.909. The results speak for themselves. Obviously P.R. Hemmer, the best Thinker and Mathematica expert, is the superior choice. He taught me much about the real world!
Today, I was faced with the challenge of doing mechanical work. Being an electrical engineer, this is a foreign concept. However, I knew I had the most powerful weapon available: PR Hemmer's education. By simply thinking a little, I made this real-world problem collapse! I was able to complete the mechanical work, fixing an otherwise broken product
"It's okay if you don't know how to think" - Philip R. Hemmer, ECEN 214, sometime in Spring 2023
Philip Hemmer's emphasis on real life problems really serves me well, even outside of electrical problems. Today I encountered a problem in the real world where EE would not help. Luckily, because I had the supreme Hemmer, I was able to become a thinker and make the problem collapse! Even if you don't know how to think, Phil is still a great choice
P.R. Hemmer. Where to start? I came into this class very nervous as I did not have much of an electrical background. However, Phil constantly encouraged me to just think a little and seemingly difficult problems would collapse and become simple. Throughout the semester problems did start to become simple just due to the simple act of thinking some
It seems like RMP might be run by a nonthinker. After a 5/5 review was recently posted for Phil, his average dropped from a 4.9 to 4.5. I don't have to be a thinker to know that a 5/5 review should raise this, not lower it. Additionally the average now seems to be capped at 4.5/5. Phil's reviews should reflect his teaching, not artificially limited
Teaches an excellent optics course. During the first week of lab there is usually a lot of smoke coming from the lab, due to short circuiting. Hemmer designs the course such that it is very simple if you think, but if you don't think it can be very hard. Students learn to think about what they're doing, setting them up for success in their careers.
Learning how to think was the best part of this course, as I previously was not a confident thinker. However, Hemmer left out an important topic: the overthinker. I was stuck on a problem and just kept thinking, but too many details collapsed and it became too simple. Unfortunately I was lost because there was no guidance for this. Still recommend
Phil's thinker conversion saved the day again! When I encountered a mechanical issue, I was initially unable to resolve it as I am not in expert in mechanical work. However, I remembered that I had Phil and therefore knew how to solve real life problems. Upon thinking about the issue and potential solutions, I was able to make this problem collapse
When I first entered Hemmer's class, I unfortunately did not know how to think. This was evidenced by the fact that I would read the textbook and do Zybooks "nonthinker" problems. However, after 2 semesters of Hemmer, I can confidently say that I now know how to think. I don't do textbook problems, instead choosing the real-world "thinker" problems
P.R. Hemmer, also known as "The Thinkerator," was first introduced to us in this class. He seemed intimidating at first, making it very clear that we will have to know how to think. However, in reality, he is very patient with us because he truly wants us to think. He does this bely eliminating the Zybooks in favor of his famous real-world examples
Upon having problems in some of my other difficult classes, I was feeling quite discouraged. I went to the legend in the ECEN department, Hemmer, for advice as he is truly inspirational. He reminded me to simply think about complex problems, similar to his real life examples, and they would collapse and become simple. It worked! Thanks Phil.
For three decades, Mathematica has defined the state of the art in technical computing--and provided the principal computation environment for millions of educators, students and others around the world. For modern technical computing, there's no other choice. Mathematica has over 6,000 built-in functions covering all areas of technical computing.
Just remember that if you don't know how to think, you should read the Zybooks. Although the answers are staring you in the face, Phil will still encourage Zybooks over being a total nonthinker and not doing any problems. Phil still prefers the real world examples, but he does understand that not everyone can think and make these problems collapse.
After being inspired by the Supreme Thinker himself in ECEN 214, I decided to take him again for 370. Knowing that Phil is teaching ECEN 215, I look forward to the fact that a whole generation of non-ecen majors (Especially mechanical engineers) will be blessed by Hemmer. Philip will make any problem collapse, even if mechanical work is required.
If you don't know how to think, just read the Zybooks. However, it's okay if you don't know how to think. The problems just won't collapse and become simple. Mathematica is always an option, though, because I always make mistakes when doing algebra by hand. It's only the cost of roughly two textbooks, but it's definitely worth it. Hemmer said so
If you don't know how to use Mathematica, don't be discouraged. Despite using it for years, Phil is still learning how to use all the features. One day during class, Phil switched to the wrong browser tab. This revealed a Mathematica tutorial, proving that even the master Thinker himself has more to learn. Just remember not to do algebra by hand!
With the semester getting ready to start, it is crucial that you remember to obtain the nonthinker Zybooks. Although this seems like a normal textbook to most, this is a critical thinker conversion tool to Phil. He uses this powerful device to explain the issues with textbook problems and why your boss will never hand you one of these questions.
The worst things for Phil: Nonthinkers, Zybooks, and the Darlington Pair. Upon further investigation, however, these are all related. Phil first learned we don't know how to think when assigned a Darlington Pair problem. This is also when he discovered that the same nonthinkers always do the Zybooks. This upsets Hemmer. He needs real world problems
"In the beginning, there was a vacancy. And then there was a nitrogen. And from that nitrogen vacancy pair came light. And that light was the life of all mankind." Hemmer 1:1
It's a little less than 6.5 hours until other engineering majors get to experience greatness. After hearing about the mythical Hemmer, they're probably extremely eager to be in the presence of TAMU's greatest, the only Supreme Thinker around. They'll be blessed by Phil's real world examples, finally understanding what it's like to be able to think!
With the first day of class upon us, I am eager to arrive in ECEN 215 to experience a class taught by the legend himself. I have read so many reviews about his amazing ability to turn a non thinker into a strong thinker, so I am hoping to leave this class as a confident thinker. Will update as the semester goes on.
Just think a little and rest assured you will do just fine in the course. Now, if you don't know how to think..
These reviews, written by passionate Phil students, are 100% representative of his quality and our experience in his class. Phil would not bother writing reviews for himself for 2 reasons. 1: He's too busy with nitrogen vacancy research to write reviews. 2: His sections are already so popular, so why would he need to boost his popularity even more?
One of my favorite part's of Hemmer's class was that he designed the homework such that it was simple if you think a little. He made this clear the first day, noting that if you don't think it will be difficult. This is because it's modeled after the real world since Phil doesn't like giving Zybooks problems (Because your boss would never give one)
It is okay if you do not know how to think. Those words may seem intimidating to the new student not used to Phil and his teaching style. However, fear not as Phil will use this as an opportunity to teach you to think and explore the world in ways you would not have done before, thus allowing you to simply make problems collapse and be easy
The Thinkerator has one of the most unique teaching styles out of all the professors I've ever had. Most professors (which don't teach you how to think) would rather give only textbook problems which are simple and not representative of the real world. Hemmer is different, instead using more challenging but realistic "real-world (TM)" examples!
"So 1st I want to talk about motivation. So I always have long-term goals. Most people have short-term goals, and sometimes mid-term, but not many people have long-term goals. And uh, long-term goal is what forces me to go into fields I wouldn't go into ordinarily, and that's how you make interesting advances and interesting discoveries." - 2/12/20
"I design the tests such that it doesn't help you to use the textbook, they will make you think. And a lot of people have trouble with what that is, since your other courses don't ask you to do that, and you'll see the homework is designed to be very simple if you think, if you don't think they can be very hard. So you have to learn to think"
Welcome to the introductory course on the famous Nitrogen Vacancy Diamond! Taught by the NV expert himself, Hemmer wants to ensure each student's success as this is a topic he is very passionate about. Just rest assured that if you think a little and pay attention to this very valuable information, Phil will reward you with a great grade!
Everyone complaining about the extreme amounts of homework just doesn't know how to think! If you learn to think, like Hemmer wants from students, the homework, which is modeled after the real world (tm), will be really easy. Hemmer does this to prepare you for your real job since your boss isn't just going to hand you a textbook problem. Think!
Today, while walking around on the 7th floor of the CHEN building, I suddenly thought to myself, "Wow, it seems like some serious thinking happens up here." Upon reading the labels on the door, it all made sense. Directly in front of where I was standing was a door to a lab labeled "Dr Philip Hemmer. Academic Optics Lab." Suddenly it all made sense
Just think a little. These words are intimidating, but just know that if you take this advice seriously, the class will all of a sudden become simple. Phil just simply requires that his students think. Once they learn to do this, the problems just start to collapse before your eyes. However, if you don't know how to think, like a nonthinker, beware
I was super excited to learn about nitrogen vacancy from the expert himself! I know Phil is one of the leading nitrogen vacancy researchers as evidenced by his numerous YouTube videos and research papers on this topic. Although Rusty briefly mentioned vacancies, it is not the same "learning" about it from someone other than Hemmer. I recommend Phil
Philip Hemmer's obsession with NV got me thinking. NV is heavily based on quantum mechanics. There happens to be another legendary professor who also likes quantum mechanics: Winfried Teizer! What if these two combined forces and made some of the most powerful quantum diamond research ever! The world might not be able to handle this much thinking!
The other day I was at Wisenbaker praying to the Gods of the Great Urinal at WEB 072, but then Phil walked in, and destroyed the false idol. He told me that I can only find enlightenment and find out who the true God is inside of a nitrogen vacancy crystal.
Phil wants his students to know how to think to be better prepared for the real world. As such, he can sometimes be a difficult grader. If he spots a nonthinker mistake, he will make sure to correct it. After all, how can you learn to think if you never know what your mistakes are. In the real world, mistakes can be disastrous and should be avoided
I saw Phil today. He looked happy. Phil was being nice at the crosswalk and letting people go. Phil was smiling. I think he was going to do some research in the Wisenbaker basement, as he was heading that way. Phil wouldn't wave at me though
Phil is the most amazing professor I've had in school. He not only teaches the material required for the course, his long term life lessons are beyond valuable. He teaches you how to think, how to make problems collapse, and how to effortlessly use Mathematica. These skills have all been extremely useful, especially today!! Highly recommend.
Philip Hemmer is the professor of all time. No one is more than him. He is, while others isn't. Before I met this man, I was just a simple plebian with no thoughts whatsoever. Professor Hemmer told me that all I needed to do was think, then it all became clear. The secrets of the universe were unveiled to me. Thank you, Professor Hemmer.
Merry Christmas Hemmer. It's been years now, but I still get flashbacks to the days when I first got Hemmered. sometimes I question if I'm still the thinker I once was. But then I remember, it's not the thoughts that make the thinker, but the nonthinker who dares to think, becomes thinker. The nonthinker who dreams…
Merry Christmas Robert! Thanks to your emphasis on learning how to think, I've successfully graduated from this esteemed institution and am now officially a grad student. I only hope that I can now teach others how to think and have long term goals too!
With the new semester upon us, a brand new set of 370 students get to experience the mythical Phil himself (Assuming they choose not to take Honest Harlan). As a former Phil student, I always look our for him, and got hopeful there might be a sighting when I learned I have class in the Wisenbaker basement. Unfortunately, this has not yet happened.
From the course description: "...real world comprehension on how to successfully engage in sustainable business development...." Luckily, because I had Hemmer and his real-world examples, I was able to make this class collapse and become simple. Hemmer's collapsing lessons are obviously useful in all classes, not just those within ECEN department
P. Robert Oppenhemmer
Just think! In doing so, by listening to P Robert Hemmer's wise words, you will begin to see the problems of the world collapse right before your eyes, while setting long term goals. These goals allow you to venture out and make discoveries in fields you wouldn't otherwise be interested in. 10/10 would recommend.
I don't think you're truly an EE until you've gotten to experience the full complement of amazing professors: Philip Hemmer, Weiping Shi, Xi Zhang, Rusty Harris, Gwan Choi, Winfried Teizer, Linda Katehi, Ken McFarland, and Aydin Karsilayan!
I was a bit disappointed to see that Phil only had research assigned to him next semester. How will nonthinkers get converted if P.R Hemmer isn't teaching. However, I was delighted to see that 215 still had no assigned instructor. Maybe the Supreme Thinker will volunteer to take over, rescuing the non-ECEN students eagerly awaiting their instructor
Looks like I was a nonthinker in the previous review. "How will nonthinkers get converted if P.R Hemmer isn't teaching." should end in a question mark, not a period. Luckily, this sentence is corrected in this review. Use your imagination to substitute this into the other review: "How will nonthinkers get converted if P.R Hemmer isn't teaching?"
How to be a successful Hemmer student: Just think a little
Don't let the course name deceive you. Hemmer will not nuke your grade. It is simply a warning that some professors in the department (A____ K_________) are out to nuke your grade, but Hemmer is here to save it!
Here is an example of why being a thinker is important. Just look at the DC-10 (Death Cruiser 10), where are bunch of nonthinkers were tasked with creating an airplane. It liked to crash, hence the name. This would never happen under Phil's watch! He would personally ensure there are no nonthinkers on such an important project. Thanks Philip!
I was highly inspired to learn about the importance of long-term goals. Without them, Philip wouldn't want to make interesting discoveries in fields he would not ordinarily go into. How would we get all this groundbreaking vacancy research without the help of the P.R Hemmer himself. Most people would not make these discoveries with short term goals
“It's OK if you don't know how to think.” This here is the most inspirational quote for the nonthinker. Not wanting to be told that again, this motivated the nonthinker to just think to make the problems collapse and ultimately become simple. This simple quote was the pivotal moment for a nonthinker to begin the conversion into a strong thinker!
Unfortunately, the semester is starting to wind down. This is bad news for Hemmer's current students, because that means their thinking experience will soon be over. Unfortunately, it still seems that the Supreme Thinker will not be teaching anything next semester, so there is no option for another round of thinking. This could still change, though
One of Hemmer's priorities is making sure you know how to think. Recently, he switched to in-person tests so he can personally monitor the Thinker conversion. With the old take home tests, Phil cannot observe the level of thinking that is taking place, so he does not know if he is doing a good job. Phil knew this needed to change, so he took action
As a thinker-in-conversion, you'll enter the "valley of despair" as you realize problems are much too difficult to collapse. At this point, you think you know nothing, which isn't entirely false. The Supreme Thinker has his PhD from MIT, but you're still a nonthinker as one of his students. Over time, the conversion process will take effect
From this point, you enter the "slope of enlightenment" as the thinker conversion process expands your knowledge. You begin to realize that you, in fact, did not know anything as a nonthinker, while massively overestimating your abilities. As a somewhat converted thinker, you begin to feel more confident with your knowledge due to Phil's teachings
Although you will never reach the level of the Supreme Thinker, eventually your knowledge will reach its maximum. There is only so much that Phil can share with you. To learn the rest, you need to set long term goals to make interesting discoveries in fields you wouldn't ordinarily be interested in, which helps in becoming a full-fledged thinker!
Nonthinker Continued: The key identifier of a Nonthinker is that they choose to do the Zybooks questions rather than the real life examples! As Hemmer pointed out, the primary reason for this decision is that the Zybooks answer is staring you in the face! Zybooks is not by choice, but Nonthinkers simply lack the ability to comprehend the Real World
Nonthinker: This is the starting point for anyone who has never had Hemmer before! Phil will try to begin the conversion process to become a Thinker, however, he will lose interest in you if you make no significant progress in the conversion. Due to this, Nonthinkers typically give Hemmer a low rating, claiming that he cannot convey material well!
Semithinker Continued: Unlike a Thinker, they are unable to cause the problem to collapse, which makes them unnecessarily complicated and may discourage the Semithinker! Unlike the Nonthinker, which tends to give Hemmer a low rating (Explained below), the Semithinker will still leave Phil a favorable rating for the immense effort put into teaching!
Semithinker: This is the transitional phase from Nonthinker to Thinker! Under the instruction of a Supreme Thinker, the conversion process will begin almost immediately, but the entire transition takes time. Semithinkers put in the effort to attempt to comprehend the Real World and the real life example problems, however they struggle to do this!
Thinker: This is the end goal for Hemmer's students. The Thinker is able to effortlessly complete the real world examples by causing the problems to collapse and become simple. Notably, this sets a Thinker up for success at a job, as your boss will never hand you a Zybooks problem to complete. Thinker conversion typically takes several months!
Supreme Thinker Continued: Supreme Thinkers fully comprehend the Real World, and are capable of designing thorough real life example problems to impart their wisdom on less privileged or capable individuals. Supreme Thinkers also possess the ability to convert Nonthinkers into Thinkers through a rigorous several month long instructional process!!
The hierarchy from best to worst is as follows: Supreme Thinker, Thinker, Semithinker, and Nonthinker. Each category is defined below. Although Hemmer doesn't intentionally segregate his students, there tends to be a direct correlation between letter grade and location on the thinker hierarchy primarily due to the class being designed for Thinkers!
Supreme Thinker: Unattainable by most, Hemmer is the only known Supreme Thinker. The Supreme Thinker demonstrates mastery of Kirchhoff's Laws, nitrogen vacancy, Zybooks photo editing, and above all, Mathematica. Supreme Thinkers also understand the importance of long-term goals to make interesting discoveries in fields not typically interested in!!
Before signing up for Hemmer, it is important to understand the student hierarchy in the class. Unlike a normal class where your performance is based on your letter grade from A to F, your performance in Phil's class is based on the thinker hierarchy. Phil could care less about your letter grade, only caring about how much you know how to think!!
"You cannot lose your ability to think. If you learn one thing from engineering school, it's how to think. When you answer a question, you have to really think. You won't get an A if you cannot demonstrate how to think." - Professor Raffaella Righetti, ECEN 412, April 12, 2025 at 12:48 PM
"You have an advantage over other students because you're trained to think. You should not take advantage of technology because it will take away your ability to think. Ignorance is a prison. If you have knowledge, you have freedom. Use that brain!" - Raffaella Righetti, ECEN 412 at 2:01pm
If only I knew how to think, I would be able to make all of life's problems collapse and become simple. Luckily, I know just the guy who can help with that. The Supreme Thinker, also known as P.R. Hemmer, specializes in converting basic nonthinkers into the thinker they desire to be. With this newly discovered knowledge, no problem will be too hard
Philip Hemmer is a great guy whose motivational speeches not only encouraged me think, but allowed me to graduate yesterday. Unfortunately, he did not speak at graduation, but I don't think the vast majority of the audience could handle being in his presence, let alone hearing from the Supreme Thinker!
With the semester now over, I'm so glad I made the decision to take a class with Phil. Not only did I learn the required course material, I learned valuable life lessons about long term goals and the importance of thinking. I will take these lessons with me throughout the remainder of my life and professional career. Thanks Phil!
Even though it's summer, don't forget to think! You wouldn't want to loose those fine thinking skills you learned from Philip Hemmer! Those are invaluable skills that will help you throughout the rest of your life and professional career.
I recently received my diploma which came with a long list of instructions on how to unpack it. Evidently, these were made for nonthinkers, as only a few hundred people a year get to experience Phil. Luckily, I had Phil. This meant I was able to open the packaging without using the nonthinker-focused directions! Hemmer is amazing!
Collapse that problem!
Clear mind, high grade distribution, and always comes to class with a smile. Not sure what more people could ask for.
Freedom from pain, the pain of being a nonthinker. That is what you emerge from this class with. P. Robert Hemmer emphasizes this (thinking) as the basic necessity of the modern engineer through his real world examples that don't have answers staring you in the face (looking at you, ZyBooks problems). Just listen to his advice and you'll succeed
Unlike some professors in the political science department, good ol' Phil will never accuse you of cheating. This is because everything is allowed since his class is a reflection of the real world, where collaboration with others is encouraged. However, Phil usually doesn't recommend this, since 10 nonthinkers isn't much better than 1.
Phil is a great guy, who, above all else, wants his students to succeed in the real world. Phil's dedication to teaching is unmatched in the department. Other professors would rather rely on curves to make their students pass, but not Phil! He will guarantee every student has the necessary material to succeed, as long as they are willing to think!
The Ballad of Philip Hemmer: ♪♫♪ If you're confused and you know it, think some more...If you're confused and you know it, think some more...If you're confused and you know it, then your grade will surely show it...If you're confused and you know it, think some more. ♪♫♪
Just think! You never know, that thinking may lead you to make interesting discoveries like the NV diamond!!
Phil is such a famous lecturer that he has been featured on the A&M Reddit page as well as other professors' reviews. Hemmer's class was instantly recognizable from a single picture due to his very profound notes and clear annotations. Additionally, Mathematica code is built into the notes, since Hemmer still cannot do algebra by hand.
Although nonthinkers will certainly struggle with Phil due to the class being designed with thinkers in mind (Phil openly states the assignments are hard if you don't know how to think), his class is still a great choice for the nonthinkers! Phil will make sure to convert all nonthinkers into successful thinkers through the power of his physics PhD
Sorry Phil for the therapy we likely caused you to require due to the trauma inflicted upon learning our class doesn't know how to think. We entered your class as a non-thinker due to never having been in the presence of a MIT physics PhD super-thinker. Well try to prevent the nonthinker-ness from requiring and additional therapy when we take 370!
Philip Hemmer, the world's top researcher on nitrogen vacancy, earned his degree from MIT. As a side project, hes determined to make nonthinkers a thing of the past through his rigorous curriculum. Most notably, Phil designs real world examples, rather than use textbook problems that have answers staring you in the face, to aid thinker conversion
When searching for professors, the choice is clear. Philip Hemmer cares about your thinking potential in ways that other professors cannot match. Other professors may be the "easy" choice, but Phil never claims to be easy. Thinking won't always come naturally, especially to those leaning towards a nonthinker, but rest assured, it's well worth it!
"I would have lived in peace (researching NV). But my enemies (nonthinkers) brought me war (departmental complaints)"
In the land of Philip Hemmer, one thing is important. Phil doesn't want you to do algebra or work as a group. Hemmer only wants you to think, as this is what will prepare you for the real world. In a job, it will not matter if you can solve a Zybooks problem, as you will never encounter these outside of school. Make sure to think think think!
In a last minute surprise before the semester starts, we have received the best gift yet! Hemmer's desire to teach about real world examples culminates with him teaching ECEN capstone. We will now get to directly apply out Hemmer knowledge to actual real world examples with problems your boss would, in fact, hand you. Definitely no Zybooks here!
There is only one thing that's worse than a nonthinker, something so scary that even Phil is afraid to mention. Introducing the Anti-Thinker! The Anti-Thinker is the complete opposite of a Supreme Thinker. Rather than converting Nonthinkers into Thinkers, the Anti-Thinker completely reverses this process, turning them back into Nonthinkers!
Just don't be an Anti-Thinker. They take the thinking skills completely out of the room when they arrive! Everyone dreads the Anti-Thinker showing up. 10/10 would take again
"Now I am their Supreme Thinker, and I do not forgive. I do not forget." - Phil when he receives a complaint against him for trying to better prepare us for the real world, knowing that he'll get the last laugh when test time rolls around.
Philip Hemmer possesses some immense thinking power, power so great that a thinker can only dream of being able to collapse problems as efficiently as Phil. As long as there is no manual algebra involved (meaning he's equipped with Mathematica), there is no problem too great for the Supreme Thinker to collapse.
Where should I start with the Supreme Thinker? He is one of the most caring professors I've ever had. He's willing to risk his immaculate reputation to prepare us for the real world by expanding the scope of his class to cover topics that most of the other professors ignore. Why simplify the class when the information is important in the real world
"If everyone's thinking alike, someone isn't thinking" - This is a good quote explaining why, although Phil allows group work on his assignments, the thinking potential might not actually increase. Supreme Thinker Hemmer wants everyone to think to their fullest potential. He doesn't want a nonthinker leeching off the success of a true thinker!
The Jeweler
As an aspiring jeweler, there is no better professor in the department than Philip Hemmer. Not only is he a top researcher in the department, P.R.H. has firsthand experience with fabricating some of the world's most advanced diamonds. I can rest assured knowing that there is no better mentor for my startup jewelry business. I feel like a thinker
Hemmer's experimental optics class is easily the most restricted class in all of ECEN. Given that Phil is in high demand, they limit the class to being taught only once every four years. This poses a challenge. The prerequisites are fairly high level classes. If it's taught your first year at A&M, you'll never be able to take this legendary class!
As someone who loves to do puzzles, P. Robert Hemmer's thinking skills are an invaluable asset. Even with 1,000 piece puzzles where the pieces look very similar, I have been able to successfully make all my puzzle projects collapse and become simply! Thanks Phil
Just think! As long as you know how to do that, you will be just fine in this class. Phil makes sure to let you know early on that the key to success is the ability to think and then all problems will just start to collapse!
Honestly, I don't know why people would even want to skip a Hemmer lecture. Although attendance was not mandatory, his real-world examples are an extremely valuable tool that the other professors simply will not teach you. He is a huge inspiration, showing me what a truly talented researcher is able to create in his secret lab. He is the NV master!
"Introduction to Quantum Computing." What a fascinating class that I would love to take. Unfortunately, it seems like it hasn't been taught for 10+ years, at least according to the public class search. It would be amazing if the quantum expert Philip Hemmer decided to revive the course and teach it next semester! I could only hope this will happen.
Philip Hemmer for university president! It's time to get a Supreme Thinker back in leadership. Nobody would understand the needs of the students better than one of the university's most sought after professors and researchers. It's time to end the reign of presidents lasting
Philip Hemmer for university president! It's time to get a Supreme Thinker back in leadership. Nobody would understand the needs of the students better than one of the university's most sought after professors and researchers.
Philip Hemmer for university president! It's time to get a Supreme Thinker back in leadership. Nobody would understand the needs of the students better than one of the university's most sought after professors and researchers. It's time to end the reign of presidents lasting only 2-3 years. Bring in the Supreme Thinker for a president that'll last!
How to solve a problem as a Hemmer student: Step 1, just think. Step 2, solve the newly collapsed simple problem, knowing no complex algebra should be involved.
Experimental optics is a very important topic, one that Philip R. Hemmer takes very seriously. This highly prestigious class is only offered once every four years, something Phil does to keep the class valuable. He doesn't want anyone to be able to take it (it might be overrun by nonthinkers), so he uses limited numbers to maximize the thinkers!

Just a weekly reminder to never loose those thinking skills Hemmer holds so dearly. Always remember that thinkers shape the world, making any problem, no matter how difficult, collapse right before everyone's eyes. Not only that, they hold the special skill of inventing new devices to make the future easier for all people. Thanks, Robert!
Days until discovery: 1
Potential day of discovery!
I'm so glad I'll get to learn how to think about quantum computing!
So glad I now have the opportunity to take quantum computing with the ECEN legend, PR Hemmer. I know by taking this class, I will not only will have a strong foundation in quantum computing, but I will also be able to sharpen my skills in the important area of thinking! Maybe, since it's a grad class, the scope of the thinking skills will broaden!
They call me the Supreme Thinker. That star by which Zybooks-users and nonthinkers navigate the wastes in the dark months of ignorance. The last star that disappears when thinkers leave in the summer.
Felt so prepared to enter the Real World (TM). Thanks Phil
Philip Hemmer, a living saint and a man of the people. Nonthinkers will complain about the lack of a syllabus or canvas course, but thinkers realize that this is because Hemmer has taken a lot of time out his schedule to help us when the university did not! Hemmer is the most compassionate professor I've ever had.
Just be a good thinker and you'll do fine. Just don't do the Zybooks exams, as you do not get partial credit since the answers are staring you right in the face. Phil wants to encourage thinking by granting partial credit for the thinker questions!
Philip Hemmer is the Earth's premier researcher and expert on fluorescent diamonds. No one else has a deeper understanding of the physics of diamonds than this man. If you ask so called "jewelers" about nitrogen vacancy, they will not even know what you are talking about. They meddle with things they do not understand. Just take Hemmer!
Hemmer tells us that it's okay if we don't know how to think. However, he still recommends that we do his thinker questions, since nonthinker questions have answers staring us in the face and he won't give partial credit for them!
Philip Hemmer is always looking to help both the nonthinkers and thinkers who cannot do algebra by hand (Similar to Hemmer himself). As evidenced by 214, Hemmer is extremely passionate about using Mathematica to solve problems. However, he elected to learn Sagemath, a free alternative, so that his students do not have to pay to easily do algebra!
Phil Hemmer is one of the university's greatest professors of all time. I don't know how one professor is so capable of inspiring so many people to just learn how to think. Although it may seem daunting at first, Hemmer has shown time and time again that becoming an independent Thinker is the most beneficial thing to prepare you for the Real World!
THINK! That's all
Quite a bit of homework for the class. So glad I had plenty of time in microwave daycare to complete it.
Philip Hemmer would make a great nuclear engineering professor. Due to the small size of the department, he could probably achieve a 100% Thinker conversion rate in that department. I also think he would do a good job at operating the reactor. I would trust nobody else more than Phil to try
So glad registration is opening this week. Hopefully I can sign up for Hemmer's 674 course before his sections fill up. He is so well known and respected I'm afraid the spots will be taken before my time slot opens.
Think, think, think. Just know, you need to use that brain and think. The modern engineer must know how to think.
There is no better time to think than the moment one enters Philip Hemmer's classroom. Although you may survive being a nonthinker outside of class, Hemmer specifically designs his homework such that you must think. The choice is still yours, though. Either think and complete the assignments quickly, or nonthink and waste 12 hours on an assignment.
Philip Hemmer is the textbook (not that he recommends using textbooks) definition of generous. Hemmer understands that you may have activities outside of class, potentially on a test day. This complicates things, because his tests are at home. Luckily, if you are unable to turn in the test, P.R. Hemmer will surprise you with the class average!
I don't know how one professor can be so organized. Most professors post a syllabus with the class schedule that you are expected to follow. Hemmer is so good at communicating that he can largely skip the syllabus step. Through the power of thinking, Phil transfers the course schedule directly to your brain, eliminating the need for the computer
He also made it extremely easy to find a class recording if you missed class. Because he started off his recordings with a face cam, every thumbnail is of his face. You just have to click on the different Phils until you find the correct one. He did provide transcripts, though, so you could always use those and CTRL+F
Hemmer is Thinker
Hemmer is leader
Hands down the best ECEN professor.
when they say this is the professor to take if you want to learn good thinking skillz, they do be right. learned amazing problem collapsing methods from mr phil
The level of thinking that goes on here is simply unmatched! There are no other professors that can even come close to Dr. Hemmer in thinking capacity
my homie philip hemmer is the ecen legend. if yo thinking skills are low, he tha man to help you fix that. mr phils life lessons from the real world (tm) are priceless
That Philip Hemmer, man was somethin' else! Talk about a legend in the lab, a powerhouse in NV research. You ain't gonna find nobody else in the field touchin' his level. And you know those folks who just don't get it, those nonthinkers? They are big mad and jealous of the knowledge and the sheer power that man held.
Ooh, you talkin' 'bout Professor Philip Hemmer? He one of the bestest teachers and them nitrogen hole science folk. His skills is way high, ain't nobody got skills like that in the research. Them dumb ones who don't think good, they just hatin' on his power. No other teacher can even wish they was as smart as him. He the king of the smarts!
I want you to just be able to look at the problem, think about it, then have the solution become obvious. It hasn't worked with my previous students, but maybe you will be the exception
mista phil is tha man. best professor hands down.
man, idk where to start. mista phil the best professor at the school. he care about each student, wants them to learn, and grades very generously with great feedback. i recommend all my homies take phil if they get da chance
Similarly, only 4,072 until Hemmer's (presumably) in-person Thinker final. That is where his students will get to prove that they have become capable Thinkers, and are able to collapse any real-world (TM) example that Hemmer throws at them. I just know everyone will do great about it, considering they learned from the best Supreme Thinker!
Couldn't be happier that I decided to take 370 with Phil. The class was amazing and P.R. really takes the time to ensure that his students understand the material and know how to think problems through. Highly, highly recommend.
Keep in mind, there is only one Supreme Thinker. You might see all these other professors, but none of them are up to the level of the Supreme Thinker. You'll never be able to collapse problems in the real world (TM) if you don't first learn how to think. Hemmer is eager to take time out of his busy research schedule, as long is it makes Thinkers!
Two words.... The Thinker. By taking this class you will learn how to think from the one and only master Thinker. You must think, and you think about how to think better. The Thinker will teach you a lot.
Now is the time to think. Not tomorrow, not in a week, but now! You never know when you will be blessed with a Supreme Thinker again so take advantage of the opportunity. Do you want to be successful at a real job, able to collapse any problem your boss gives you? Or do you want to live off the textbook examples, unable to solve real world problems
the thinker is the goat
I chose this class because it is a business course. If you own a business, you'll need to collapse a lot of problems each day. You need to be able to Think for that, and there is none better than the Supreme Thinker Philip Hemmer. Although he likes to teach ECEN, his concepts are equally applicable to business. Phil can do it all
It's always a great day when a live Hemmer sighting happens. That exact thing occurred this week when I got to see Phil in lot 47 heading to the mysterious Hemmermobile! He was smiling, but that's not really unusual. Phil is just such a happy guy, delighted knowing that he gets to teach a fresh bunch of people how to think!
It's always time to think. And when the next semester starts, everyone will get to experience this firsthand. You may want to be lazy, but Phil's room is not the place for this! Thinking collapses problems, which allows you to easily solve it without doing algebra by hand! Nonthinkers will definitely struggle, though, as they're difficult problems!
A very troubling discovery was made today: Phil now has competition for ECEN214. The competition is none other than Katehi, from the famous microwave daycare. Students are potentially loosing the ability to become Hemmer trained thinkers. It is concerning that some up and coming engineers may not get to experience Hemmer in a critical class.
Oppenhemmer taught me much in his class. I think someone needs to convert his class recordings into a complete length movie. It would destroy Oppenheimer at the box office
As the semester ends, I'm so glad I signed up to take Phil's class. The material was interesting, Phil is a fantastic lecturer, and his strong emphasis on applying those thinking skills really carried me through the class and made it a lot easier. Anyone should sign up and take Phil if they have the opportunity.
The thinking continues onto the next episode! As he went up the ETB, he made a startling discovery: the Hemmer Operator. In one moment, I was a clueless doer, but his operation linearly transformed me into a full-on thinker. I could not escape, I could only watch him smile and wave. I could never return to being a non-thinker because of his aura!
Hemmer's lectures are amazing. He is effortlessly able to convert even the most stubborn Nonthinker into a capable Thinker, though Phil will have to develop a rigorous curriculum to do this. To demonstrate your Thinking proficiency, Phil recently switched to in-person Thinker tests, but this is really to help you think (Hemmer doesn't want AI used)
I can't believe Linda Pisti Basile Katehi Tseregounis of trying to take over the class from Robby!
The most powerful gift you can give this Christmas is the gift of thought. You know what they say: "it's the thought that counts." Teach your family how to think, and they will be gifted for the rest of their lives. Tell them to audit this professor's course, they only have to pay for parking, and it will pay dividends for generations. Think!
man, mr. phils thinking skills really helping make my gaming problems collapse
think! that is all. mista phil approves this message.
