He is very good at working with students; each and every one gets attention. He puts a lot of comments on papers and they are helpful. We have a great teacher and a great class too.
I think he is really great. Anyone who is complaining probably isn't doing the assigned work and maybe theyre to blame
I hope I can take more classes from...the best teacher ever.
He is a very nice guy. Willing to help and wants to help. Not very organized though. Fairly easy grader. I liked him, but I do not think I could handle another semester that is this unorganized. He likes discussion. If you like to talk in class, you should definately take his class.
really good teacher, he grades easy, but id have to agree hes pretty unorganized..though he gives lengthy articles to read
He is very considerate and helpful. He goes the extra mile and puts students first. His classes make us think. I think he managed to educate us, get me interested, and be clear about expectations. Then the class "feels" easy. The course is well-organized. My guess is that some students are lazy (and can't spell, see below) and blame him.
I think it was a few weeks in when I realized that this guy blew my mind. I find it challenging and fun. He gives a range of assignments, different readings, something for everyone - especially those who appreciate genius.
I'm glad this professor is teaching a class I can take next semester. That should sum up what I think of how well he did this semester.
The class was interesting, the teacher is fair. Sometimes the readings and work are heavy, but he balances it out.
This is a very tough class! He is also helping a lot and we are learning a lot.
He is really helpful and dare I say O so hot!
I didn't get a great grade from this course but that doesn't mean i didn't enjoy being in it. I deserved the grades that i got because i didnt do anything. But he still gave me a grade that didnt really harm me too badly. I greatly respect him and he has a lot of great insight. "Who would Jesus bomb?"
This is a very fun and challenging and educational course. We owe that to the work that he puts in, his amazing knowledge, support, and enthusiasm.
good guy, horrible teacher.
I am getting so much more out of this idea of daring truths than I imagined. His class is both fun and educational, serious but not cruel.
I am learning about all things apocalypse in this class. He is considerate and dedicated to teaching.
this guy taught me so much. I know MLA. that matters and it was hell. but he is very cool and we learned so much.
I didn't know MLA and now I could cite this entry if I needed to. He taught us both grammar and the difficult material and I feel prepared for my other classes.
He is a very good and very hard teacher. He is also nice. I'm glad I took his English 161! Best English class ever!
Hard grader but wants perfection from his students. Tries to be nice.
I didn't know how much I would learn when I signed up for this course. Now that I'm done, I feel completely prepared for my future classes. And inspired.
The class is tough, no doubt, but it's a good thing. Go to class, participate, write all your assignments and journals to length, and it's an easy A. His methods aren't always orthodox, but play along and use the concepts he preaches in your writing. He'll notice it. Also, the smallest things count-READ THE SYLLABUS!
I didn't think I liked Literature, certainly didn't think I liked poetry but the way he teaches it is different. He understood us and he showed me meaning
He brought me and others to a new level of understanding. I am in that class too. Most of us are doing well in that class. Most of us did not drop. And that's because he listens and works with students. Expect to be treated like you are in college, an adult. Respected.
I thought I was going to take another college class. Instead, this teacher expanded my understanding of the subject matter and he improved my writing skills. Plus, I think he made it all fun.
He handled a really hard class. One student was especially difficult. If you do your work and participate, you do well I think.he is not easy but he is fair and interesting. Glad to be done glad I took this clss
If at the end of a class, I want to no if a teacher is teaching any more classes I figure that says something. He's great in this class. I imagine him as good or better in an advanced class.
I had the honor of taking one of his classes my freshman year, and even though it was college required and the participation was dry at times, he made the best of it. I enjoyed my time so well in 160, that I proceeded to take 161, and 101 with him in the following semesters. He's a very interesting professor, very understanding, and always helpful.
I hated going to his class. Rude at times.
When people write dismissive junk like "I hated going to his class. Rude at times" you always know they are the actual culprits to their own lack of imagination. Great class. Great professor. Passionate. Smart. People who don't appreciate his class, probably complain about most of the teachers who actually challenge them to think.
His class was definitely the most rigorous class I've ever taken. However, he was extremely understanding when I was having trouble and truly cared about each and every student in his class. He didn't stick to the syllubus at all and he was consistently late for class but he made up for it by leading interesting discussions and grading fairly
A very understanding teacher but be prepared to get docked a lot of points if you don't follow minute details. MLA is like his religion and he will take points off if you don't staple. Seriously. I would recommend his class.
Jenks is really easy going and very passionate in reading and writing. That passion carries over well into his teaching methods. I enjoyed being in his class. At times I actually looked forward to going to it.
Definitely one of my favorite professors. The final paper was supposed to be around 20 pgs long and it definitely made future papers in other classes seem like a breeze. Very helpful and caring. If you talk to him on a personal level, he's an awesome guy with amazing taste in music ;) Definitely got me into some awesome stuff.
Definitely, the teacher with the most amount of work i've ever done yet he has a vast amount of knowledge. His class opened me to many new things and changed the way I feel and think about our society. I definitely recommend his class it was a great experience.
I just took this class because it fit my schedule but it is so good I want to take his English 101! he is caring and always gets me thinking of new stuff. He really helped on the assignment three. His feedback is the best I have ever got.
Awesome teacher!!
Great teacher! Highly recommended
He is really caring and understanding. He loves his job and loves to help. I failed the class because I was late everyday so I dropped it mid-semester. But I did like the class. The readings he gives are thought provoking. He is big on participation so if you don't like to talk then skip his class. A lot of reading! But its all interesting.
Expects you to read the textbook to learn much of what he grades for. Also very opinionated. It seemed to me like his biases got the better of him sometimes and he graded some of us down for disagreeing with him but hey, this is coming from quite literally the only conservative in his ultra-liberal class about animal rights.....
I am so glad I took this. I didn't know at first, but he is so helpful and puts 100% into assisting us in our writing. And, he made me feel comfortable at UIC.
Jenks is very helpful, but he doesnt let you voice your opinion. if you dont agree with him he'll make you feel horrible, and it will also effect you when he grades your papers
I didnt know anything about the topic or the teacher when I came in. I really think he is the best teacher I've ever had. He is supportive and fair. He challenged me to think and provided counters to my opinions, but that was done in a helpful way. I don't agree with everything we read, but I am doing well on the papers.
I like this teacher. He is tough and just at the right times flexible. I feel better prepared in all my classes because of this class. I never felt shut down. He will challenge you to support your claims. Also, a fair grader.
He's funny and nice. He made boring stuff cool. And i thought it was real tough for a while but in the end I thought he learning become easy. Now I know how to write a solid research paper. Plus he cares about his students. Organized from summary to research. I didn't want to stop coming to class. Chic academe.
He makes you work, but he is extremely helpful and an amazing teacher. He definitely improved my writing and taught me to think in ways I never did before. He is very fair. He makes you work hard and grades hard at some points, but he does give breaks and a change to take a breath during the course. One of my favorite professors...
Amazing! A lot of fun, chill.
he is very funny and helps a lot at the same time. Knows when to be serious too. He spends a lot of time with feedback. That got me more interested in responding and writing. I'm actually not into writing but it was great to have him. He held my interest in doing better.
Philip is the most understanding and helpful professor I've had at UIC. He really cares about the students and does him best to help out in any way he can. Class was nice, dry at times but I enjoyed it! I recommend this class, he's awesome
Excellent teacher. Made English a fun class to go to. Highly recommend trying to get Professor Jenks as a teacher.
He is a nice professor who actually cares about the students. His class gets boring at times but you can miss few classes so it's OK.His feedback was very helpful and I feel like my writing has improved thanks to him.Overall,he is a decent prof and is a very fair grader.
Considerate, intelligent, responsive to student needs. He is pretty flexible, but values participation. I felt comfortable in his class and recommend it. Cool guy. Plus he's hot in his own way ;)
I think he was a great professor. He showed patient with a batch of students that was dull. Despite challenges, he brought in great speakers from syllabus and was enthusiastic. I can't wait to take another course with Jenks. highly recommend.
Jenks is a beautiful human being. He is a professor that genuinely cares for his students, and he is always open to help students with their papers if they have questions. There are open discussions, and he's pretty cool making the readings (some of which are very dense) understandable. Students should definitely take him if they have a chance.
He is an excellent professor, and the course theme is more interesting than some of the alternatives. He is a hard grader on drafts, but is overall very fair in terms of grading, as long as you back up your arguments with strong evidence. He is very critical if your views do not match his own, so be sure to agree with him as much as possible!
He is very fair and challenging. It's all about claims being supported by evidence. He doesn't care if you agree with him - if anything perhaps he finds the suck-ups to be transparent. Compassionate. Actually cares about each student.
Dr. Jenks issues a challenge. He encouraged us to make the best class ever. Balancing humor and dead seriousness, grammar/form and critical thinking, and an interesting topic made for a great class. It's the best one I've had yet.
He is a great professor that really cares about the students. He does not only talk about animal rights, and he has you read interesting yet challenging pieces that he goes over in class. Participate in his class and go to his office hours, he always has interesting stories/things to say!
Amazing. There is hope for this university after all. Most profs suck here. he is fun and tough but in a good way. perfect? well, pretty close!
Docta Jenks is the bomb. hes funny, hot, and helpful. go D.J.!
Jenks knows his stuff and that made the class great. I can't belive I took a writing class where I learned about animal rights and about myself. He is very clear about his expectations so there's no way to do poorly. Still, some students do. The load is heavy in the begining but it's worth it. Take this guy! You'll get an A!
This guy is a genius. Jenks makes class fun. I realize now how much I learned from him. I wish there were more classes with him. He's also hot and highly intelligent.
Do not take him for an easy A. He is very picky and not clear. He is very moody. He will refer you to books instead of helping you. HE IS NOT HOT!!!
He is going to make you work. Also known as learning. I felt I understood material better when going to class and discussing them. Assignments and reading are clear. He also cares about students, which is what I find attractive. Some don't pay attention and do nothing, expecting an A. That's not how it goes either. Show up and do the work.
Definitely helpful and enthusiastic about his work. This guy is a genius. He's very down to earth, makes him that much more approachable. Super caring about his students. He wants you to succeed and will help you in any way possible. I never thought animal rights would be so much fun and such a great learning experience. Easy if you apply yourself.
Great Professor. You will def. need to make sure you read the readings and take time to write your papers, BUT if you clearly put in the work on paper and in class, the your final grade will be in your favor. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS. Readings will provide useful information, you may even learn something new!
Get to know him. He's gone through a lot of stuff so if you are struggling in any way GO TALK TO HIM. About life, about school, about anything in general. He wants to be a friend and know you on a personal level. Participate; he wants to know what you have to say. Hard class, but you will learn SO MUCH. He da bomb.
Jenks is a pretty cool dude. At times there is a large amount of work, but the class is generally relaxed.
He actually cares about his students. Although he does give a lot of work, they all fit into the course topic. His humor always attract our attention like when he claim the noise from the ceiling to be "cold evil" which was the name of an article/essay we read. Just make sure you "always" fix your grammar because he grades heavy on it. Good Luck
One of the most interesting professors on the UIC Campus. He made a boring topic fun, he made class worthwhile with his sarcasm. I enjoyed his class very much even though I HATE English. It isn't an easy A though, but worth the challenge!
He is a decent teacher. I don't really think I learned much from him mostly due to my lack of interest in the subject, but the information given is very sufficient in order to pass the class. His syllabus is very well written and thorough. Word of caution though, if you ask him questions that you could have figured out by yourself, he will yell.
Jenks is an amazinggggg professor! He really strives to help his students understand writing and analyzing texts! He also is so funny and great to be around in class and out of class if you need extra help. At the end of the semester you actually feel like you learned something. Great guy, good heart, dont piss him off!
He's super helpful, great to talk to, and good to work with. Doesn't change assignments, but does remind people. Is not overly demanding. Textbook use, normal for college as far as I can tell. Requires evidence connecting to claims in a very well designed course. isn't teaching opinions.
Take him! You will not regret it!!!!!!
He helps a lot! Also he is different from many teachers because he actually teachers you in more than one way, such as movies, field trips, lectures, and peer reviews.
Dr. Jenks is an outstanding professor! As long as you're willing to put the effort and come to class I guarantee you will do great. He is enthusiastic about his class and knows how to get everyone on that same level. If you have any trouble go to his office hours and he will help you and answer any questions. He seeks student success.Take him!
This professor in general is boring. He's a tough grader and I really mean it. He will grade your rough drafts which I find it outrageous because you know drafts are meant to be for mistakes but he taking it serious like if he was grading final drafts. If I was you, I would take someone else. His lectures are pointless and a lot of reading, A LOT.
He's tough, but things ease up. I like the feedback and grades I get on each draft. Also, he does inspire. Probably because he cares!
He seems tough, but things ease up. I like the feedback and help I get on each draft. Also, he does inspire. Probably because he cares!
I had Dr. Jenks my first semester of college and LOVED his class! He's a wonderful, caring and very smart professor. Go to his office hours. He's genuinely interested in learning about YOU and helping you develop a writing style that caters to you. He's funny, too. Down-to-earth dude; knows mistakes happen. Engage in class and read! Be original.
Jenks is an awesome professor. I barely spoke in class, but I went to his office hours and talked to him there. He's so understanding, and he's legitimately a realist. He's changed the syllabus like 20 times and extended due dates for big assignments. You need to put forth effort, but he helps you along the way. His feedback is awesome on essays!
Professor Jenks is a really nice guy. He has some issues in teaching (he veers off on tangents a lot), so the class time seems like a waste. BUT you have to option of taking the class where you want. He is very open to discuss almost anything. In terms of work--easy grader, not too much work, and very helpful.
I took Jenks's class my first semester when the subject was "Animal Cruelty". It was honestly the most memorable class I have taken at UIC. He has so much passion for the topic and goes out of his way to find something to do or show that helps connect the readings to real life. He gives you plenty of time, great feedback and meets with you to help!
He's intense, funny, and even makes composition fun. His race, class, and gender class challenged me and helped me more than I knew. I'm seeing now how much I learned from him. Also, he cares about each student. I recommend his class.
He was the bombdotcom. He genuinely cares about the topics and student he teaches. If you keep with the curriculum, an A is easily accessible. We also take cool field trips, FOR EXTRA CREDIT. He is awesome.
He's an extremely nice guy and very approachable. Will help you out whenever you need it. If you put the effort into his class you'll get an A. Only bad thing about him is he's VERY liberal, to an annoying extent, can barely make it through a class without pushing liberal ideologies. Overall good professor though.
so glad i took him for 161. super nice, caring, and understanding. just do the work on time and you will get a good grade
Super nice professor, so glad I took him. Go to his office hours and you will be fine. If you put in a bit effort, the class is easy.
Topic was Race/Class/Gender, which is so broad you could basically write about whatever you wanted. Class was mostly discussion based. Lenient grader, great class. Any problem you could probably work out with him. Dont use phones in class (unless it's for reading/research) because it pisses him off.
Jenks is an extremely talented individual who actually cares about both writing and his students while also maintaining a tendency to roast students and critique capitalism in the same class. Attendance is the ENGL 161 policy (5 absences) and his late grading is fairly harsh (30% off) but his comments are VERY useful and class is discussion-based.
He is an easy grader and allows 6 absences before grade deduction. If you follow the syllabus, the class is an easy A. I personally got 99% in his class. There are numerous extra credit opportunities. He's fairly liberal. He talked about communism is a positive sense, but if you can tolerate liberal rants, take him for an easy A.
Professor Jenks is an amazing professor, and he genuinely cares about the success of his students. His feedback on essays is very detailed and individualized, and because he grades the rough drafts the toughest but also makes them worth the least number of points, there is room for improvement and you can end with a good grade.
Jenks taught me so much about critical thinking, writing, and the topics. I found the classes to be engaging and he knows how to challenge students. Awesome.
He wasn't horrible, but he was the only English teacher at the time who graded rough drafts harshly. I did not like how he graded them so hard, especially since they are very rough. Also, there was a point when he did not like my research topic, and discussed it out loud to the entire class in order to get a laugh. Hard grader, and a bit strict
I really value how he gave a lot of attention to rough drafts while the grade on them would not sink you. He made me think about how language matters well beyond what I anticipated. Plus he was fun. Excellent professor!
