Nice Guy. Kind of dry at times, but I have talked with people who have taken him since, and they have said he is more lively now.
He is clear and straightforward on what he expects of the student. He teaches several very interesting classes and you learn quite a bit from them.
He is an awesome teacher. Always helpful in and out of class. He outlines what is expect from you. You always learn such interesting information in class. There will be a lot of reading, but it is necessary for history. I would consider taking him again.
He's very thorough with what he teaches and uses his time wisely, starting and ending at exactly the right time class starts and ends. With history as one of my weak subjects I've actually enjoyed the class.
he knows his stuff but is really boring. maybe it wouldn't be so in such a large class, but in a class of 200, its really easy to get distracted. the tests are pretty easy b/c he gives a lecture outline for each class. read the book and you're fine.
Easy class if you write notes and pay attention. It can be a little difficult to pay attention sometimes, but for the most part it's not too bad. I rarely read anything and made an A on the final by just studying my notes, but I did go almost every day.
I have taken numerous course with him. He is very knowledgeable and can be passionate about the material but has difficulty bringing the material "to life" for some students. All courses will include a class presentation, so be ready to teach y
Not the most inspiring speaker, but still very good. Knows his material and can mix in the occasional joke. You will learn a lot and I don't think anyone would ever regret taking his class. Very thoughtful and easy to talk to outside of class.
Hate his teaching style. I really hated a class I should have loved. He made the class painful. By the end of the class I hated the sight of the man. I would not take him again if he paid me to be there.
An excellent professor! He explains things well and has a good sense of humor. Nice person. Make sure you are on time to his class--he starts the second class is supposed to start.
Awesome teacher. Well not really teacher but lecturer. Explains things well enough that you'll easily be able to dish it out on a test.
If you have no interest in history then DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. It is quite a but of studying, and attendance is crucial. Take Core II it should be easier.

As a lecturer he attempted to be interesting, but was completely uneven and nonsensical in what he taught and what he left out. He also tends to go very fast and does not encourage talking to him at all.
Dr. K is great when he sticks to his topic. Trying to pander to a crowd of semi-literate would-be-Guevaras makes him tedious. He needs to become a professional and keep his almost thought out political views to himself. He is well travelled and well read. He's a great lecturer and PowerPoint master.
I was concerned because I had heard Dr. K was unreasonably difficult as a professor. Not true at all! He was an awesome lecturer, created a very enjoyable classroom environment, and motivated me to read and learn the material. If you want to really learn something about the topic, then sign up!
He is a nice guy but really doesn't understand how to teach an honors class. Discussions were bordering on pointless and the amount of work he pushed on us was unbelievable. About 5 papers total and a presentation, no exams though. Be prepared to work and throw back his own ideas to do well.
Lectures are unorganized. He didn't grade fairly on the presentation. There is a lot of reading. Tests are difficult. I wouldn't take any more of his classes.
I was really looking forward to this class, yet this teacher made it terrible. His notes were extremely unclear and unorganized and his exams were extremely hard (reguardless if you studied). He made me drop out of a class I was extremely interested in. Advice - DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Started the semester rigid and uptight, but loosened up in the end. The class wasn't impossible, but I won't be rushing to take another Kaplan class anytime soon.
The class is not that bad He does jump around a lot in lectures and I do have a border line B/C in the class but he grades extremly easy You have 3 little papers, a presentation and a big paper that are worth about nothing compared to the two test that carry most of your grade. must attend class!
If you attend class, take notes and do his assigned busy work, you'll do well in his class. He loves particpation on BB and in class. A lot of info is thrown at you, but he really knows what he's talking about. Tests reflect how well you take your notes and pay attention to what he says.
Best Professor at UNF
Fun class. Hard class but very fun. Dr. Kaplan is a thoughtful and engaging scholar. Connects with students well despite teaching subject matter that is not always easy to connect with.
He is tech-savvy and an improving lecturer.

Great Professor Awesome lectures on BB, I didn’t even use the textbook that’s how good of lectures he provides. Go to class take good notes and you will get an A. His exams have 10 terms and you write about 5 include who, what, where, when, and 3 essay question you write about 1. 5 Papers outside class readings are a piece of cake. Take him.
He is excited about history and tries to involve students to make the subject come alive. You must read the book and study hard to do remotely well on his tests.
Awesome lecturer and knows almost everything about Ancient history. Requires a lot of work and studying for his midterm and final. Requires 1 five page paper, 2 tests, 1 ten minute presentation and three 2 page papers for the semester. take this Course if you like history, you will learn ridiculous amounts of knowledge
Dr. Kaplan is a good teacher. In order to do well in his classes, one must take notes, present well in front of class, and read all the assignments!
He is pretty straightforward. Tests come from notes, and a little bit is from reading. Go to class! He can be pretty funny and won't put you to sleep...sometimes! Testing is fair, essays are pretty easy. Go to class and take notes and this won't be hard for ya! Don't buy the books for the essays. Just google summaries of the books.
HARD CLASS but interesting.. DO NOT TAKE IT EARLY MORNING... Good professor though!
I liked this class. At first I thought I was going to hate it, but it is not as bad as I thought it was going to be. He makes history interesting. His grading breakdown is good - 3 exams, 3 essays and section work.
He's good eye candy. Plus he breaks everything down to where you can understand. Buy a tape recorder because he goes fast.
his lectures are full of information, but if you miss a lecture, its not that hard to catch up. Tests are really hard though, study!
lectures arent mandatory, but i would suggest them, section work one day a week is when the attendance is taken and where all the actual work is done, you dont have to go to lecture if you read the book and study before the test. the only book you need is the textbook. none of the outside reading books
this class was boring.i really hated this class but then again i hate history.if u find history interesting, then u may enjoy this class. but its not an easy A. the professor wasn't that exciting either. the t.a. and the professor do offer help in and out of class.i would not take this professor or class again if i had the chance.
I honestly don't understand why Dr. Kaplan has such a poor rating; he is a great lecture teacher who knows his material and seems passionate about what he speaks about. History can be boring for some but he tries to make it interesting; does not stress memorizing dates but rather why things are important/significance. Pray you get a good section.
I liked it because it didn't count if you showed up for class or not.. Kaplan is really passionate about the subject and when I really focused on his lectures, it was interesting. Sometimes i just couldn't find the motivation to go, but it really matters which TA you get. tests are very particular.. i had trouble studying the right info
Kaplan is very passionate and intelligent in the subject, it all depends on which TA you get. Do NOT get Jamie Greenmun. Tests are very hard to study for. 200-250 terms are given and only 8 are chosen for which you have to write half a page on each. Very broad information and not enough time to prepare.
I have mixed feelings about Dr. K. He is passionate about his work, however, I'd describe him as a sophist. His classes are very fast paced so if you are use to having a professor that lectures to a pace where you can jot down a lot of notes, you might want to pass on taking him.
Professor is very enthusiastic about his subject. Lectures are very fast paced so note taking can be a little difficult. Breakout sections were everything.
He knows what he is talking about, but had a few boring lectures. He uses blackboard, google earth, and powerpoint a whole lot. Plus, he puts all his powerpoints and section study guides on blackboard. He is not a hard grader, attendance is mandatory (sort of).2 exams, one group presentation. Really interested in students! Not a hard class - take him!
He's very difficult to follow at times. I am a note taker, but he only speaks the notes, powerpoints are all pictures. I like to have visual words and notes. Not my style of teacher. God for those with audible memory, or some kind of recording device. Class attendance not required. Breakout teacher was good.
Ancient Near East was a great class, very interesting. Most intelligent professor I know. Very Very helpful outside of class!
The professor seemed to have passion for his subject but not his students. He did not always read his e-mails and seemed to enjoy piling work on us even during exam weeks. Unless you really have an obsessive interest in Ancient Greece, don't take this class. I won't even order Greek salads anymore! Hated it. Run, run, run.
I went into Ancient Rome thinking that it was going to be my favorite class with already a general foreknowledge of much of the material. However, I know that I will be leaving the class severely disappointed as a result of of this professors grading. I am a mostly A student and have received only B's and C's from him on simple material and assgmts
Quirky humor and enthusiastic about the material. Tends to jump a few years or so from topics but still relevant. Exams are challanging but once you have the format down and know what to expect it's a matter of time and effort. I genuinely looked foward to each lecture.
He talks rather quickly and i had a hard time understanding what was important material to write down, kind of mono tone. His tests are impossible at first but talk to your breakout teacher and they should be able to help. Be prepared to spend hours studying, this class takes alot of memorization. do not take this class with an english lotsofwriting
Definately not an easy course. Lectures are not mandatory and I found them useless, mostly pictures. You do need to go to break out class. Three tests and six eassys. Three of the essays were in class and the other three were outside of class. LOTS of writing, you will need to read and STUDY. I got a B.
Due to his affinity for using Google Earth, his lectures are hard to follow. He's passionate about ancient history (and maps, annoyingly so), but is never perfectly clear. Thank God for my break out teacher Amanda Chapman. If you have to suffer through this class, choose her as your section leader. This class was not easy, just required.
Interesting class, mostly lectures, a few small papers and an option to do a research paper instead of Final Exam.
He does tend to overuse Google Earth but other than that, he is a fun professor who doesnt just lecture for an hour and fifteen minutes. Three small papers are a mix of creative historical writing and if you do well enough on the Midterm, you can do a small research paper instead of the Final. Overall a great teacher.
I'm not gonna lie, you need to go to every class and really listen to the lectures or else you won't have a clue about anything for the midterm and final. He posts his powerpoints but they don't help much. Definitley read the books, it will help on the exams.
He jumps around in the regions of the near east. He goes pretty fast, you definitely need to pay close attention to get all the information from lecture. Midterm, final, google earth project, short paper, long paper. He likes people who participate in class discussions, and it's part of the grade.
Kaplan conveys the material well, lectures are fun, but there aren't many ways to take notes because he uses pwrpt pics and google earth exclusively. The tests cover a lot of material but he tells you what to focus on. The google earth project sucked because I didn't feel like I was learning as much from students as what I could from his lectures.
I had Kaplan for Core 1. It is very essay driven. It can be overwhelming but if you take good notes in class, read the book, and attend the breakout (mandatory), you will do fine. I like Kaplan's lectures and I think his use of google earth is helpful in giving the topics perspective. He is very passionate about history and knowledgable.
Overall very good. He really knows his stuff and his exams are very fair. Uses technology extremely well in his teaching. I would definitely take him again
lecture are ok and are helpful at times. READ the text book and essay exams are easy! It really depends on your core instructor. Connolly was GREAT! Dropped an essay and mad a website for all the terms. Kaplan wants you to know 100 terms the other Professor narrows it down to 40. 2 Exams one final (not accumulative):5 vocab definitions and 1 essay
He knows his stuff. Just make sure you go to class so you can soak everything in. You don't even have to take extensive notes, just LISTEN! and get Connolly as your TA, you won't regret it. She's very lenient. Exams were EASY if you just read chapter summaries and memorize a few important dates. I got an A.
Very smart man, he knows his stuff. Make sure you attend lecture and soak everything in and get Connolly as your TA. She's very lenient and offers extra credit.I recieved an A.
I like Kaplan, for the most part. He's an incredibly smart man. I mean, this was a seminar so obviouly there is a lot of work invovled, but he is pretty great. I've taken multiple classes from him now, always learn a lot. If you like history, you'll like him.
very smart, knows his stuff. i would recommend attending lecutre, he will sometimes give hints to the test. must read the textbook because there is way too much info. get connolly as ta, you can bs everything and dont need to buy extra books beside textbook.
He was VERY helpful, as long as you go to lecture and take your own notes you're golden. His class has helped me learn how to listen to a lecture and rephrase the notes. He's great. Use notecards, you won't regret it. I recommend him.
He definitely knows his material and if you're not into history, then you'll probably find this class boring. Attendance is not mandatory in the class (but it is for the breakout sessions), but I recommend going to class. I like how he provides power-points without notes. He's smart not to rely on them. He is a great professor!
It was an amazing alternative to EUH and as long as you go to Friday sections it's easy to pass, he is a super nice guy
This class is really boring. You don't have to go to class being that the tests are identification terms, map, and passages and have nothing to do with his lectures. He's a nice guy and very knowledgeable but going to class is pointless. I never went but did attend break outs and walked out with an A
Kaplan is a very good professor and really knows his stuff. If you are interested in history then be sure to take one of his classes, you will learn a lot. If you pay attention in class, do the readings, and are willing to do research then you should do well in the class.
Good Professor. Extremely Knowledgeable. Goes the entire lecture without needing notes or skipping a beat. He's been to most of the places he lectures about in Ancient Greece. Didn't care for the Google Earth aspect that much, but I guess it helps some people. I'd take him for another history course.
the class is extremely boring!
Good Prof. A lot of reading and writing, but hey, you shouldn't be a History Major or Minor if you don't want to do that. Google Earth project was an easy A! I like that he threw something else in there besides always writing papers. It made you really examine and look at the areas that you picked.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT A HISTORY MAJOR. Definitely very knowledgeable, but unable to understand that some people have no background in history. Expects you to follow lectures intently. 2 short papers, a midterm, Google Earth project, long paper, and final. 4 absences are allowed before your grade drops. Reconsider before signing up.
Such a tough class. The main problem I have is I never got anything back. You submit everything online he grades it online you get the grade you have and there's no explanation as to why you got the grade that you did. Taking 3 other classes I don't have time to go to his office to find out.
Not a bad guy, class is pretty hard, even for a history major. But you will get a lot out of it
Very interested in what he teaches
Very passionate individual and very nice man. I personally did not care for his lecture style, but he knows his stuff!
Very passionate. Very knowledgeable. I recommend him.
Kaplan rocks. Class was boring for me until I started really following along with the readings. This guy knows a ton about his subject, and if you're attending college for more than just the degree than this class is one you should take. Read the textbook!!!
Do not take if you are going to be absent more than 4 times. It doesn't matter if you were hospitalized for the fifth absence he will not take a note. There is a lot of reading, typically in an unreasonable amount of time. He talks about how you have to know the history, but there is none because the Greeks made it all up. Very confusing.
Interesting class, Dr. Kaplan knows his stuff and after taking his class if you pay attention you will learn things. Some of the assignments I found a little hard because they were unclear. 1-Google Map, 2-Blogs, 1-Paper, Midterm, Final. Tests are in 4 parts: location, terms definition, passage identification, and essay. Prepare to work hard.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS IF YOU ARE NOT AN AUDITORY LEARNER! Dr. Kaplan does nothing but talk.. This would be great if what he said and any sort of organization to it. His power points are useless; picture with no words on them. Attendance policy is unreasonable. Lectures are boring and dry. Do not take unless you are extremely interested in the subject
BEWARE!!! This class is painful. If you have absolutely no other option and are forced to take this class then be ready to claw your eyes out. After a few weeks, going to lecture is worthless because his PPTS are just pictures. The only person that matters is your breakout leader, they are the ones who actually teach you. Avoid at all cost!!!!!!!
Second class with Dr. Kaplan, enjoy his lectures felt this class had too much in it. Long period and vast area. Using BB made it easier for the exams because he would allow student to post terms which he would choose for the exam, he also gave a map to study for the exam. Made it easier for the exam, participation is important in the class.
Kaplan is a pretty dry lecturer but he's specific in what he expects of you test-wise & will always answer your Q's after class or by email. You will read a LOT for this class & do class discussion boards. He offers extra credit on every test and there's short papers, 600-1700 words. Read everything & do the study guide & you can get at least a B+.
2 small papers & 1longer one, a map project, 2 tests & 1 group presentation. Overall, as long as you take notes & read the book, you can get at least a B+. He tells you EXACTLY what he expects for the tests and gives you extra credit opportunity. He's a dry lecturer sometimes so don't take this class during the midday slump time like I did (3-4:15)
He is really all over the place. Ancient Rome was so confusing. He would tandem jump and you would lose track of what was said. Skip him.
The class consisted mostly of class discussion with hardly any lecture. Personally, I would have liked more lecture where he was actually teaching, not just prompting class discussion. I just wish he would have given us more information and facts rather than just asking us what we thought of the material.
Dr. Kaplan is brilliant. Lectures are full of discussion. Lectures are picture powerpoint so you have to take good notes. He lets you know EXACTLY what is expected from him. 2 short 500 word papers, one 5 page paper, online map project, participation, midterm & final. Extremely helpful and he knows his material!! Took him twice this semester.
Professor Kaplan is laid back and knows exactly what he's talking about. The readings are sort of interesting. However, he doesn't actually lecture and tell you straightforward information, but rather talks about the readings and has class discussions. If you like that, the class is definitely for you. If you don't like speaking, class is awkward.
He knows a lot but is very pretentious. If you're not prepared to give it your all every single class, if you're 5 mins late every now and again, if you're the type of student who relies on your professor to be realistic with his expectations, this is not the professor for you. I usually pull B's at the worst, walked away from this class with a D.
I LOVED Dr. Kaplan's Ancient Rome class. I learned so much from him. To pass his classes and his exams you HAVE to do the readings. The few projects and papers in his class were pretty easy and straightforward, and he's a very fair grader. If you just read what he assigns, you'll pass his exam. Also? He's pretty handsome.
Dr. Kaplan thinks he's incredibly funny, which in turn makes him very endearing. He's very knowledgable, but more importantly unafraid to admit to not knowing a subject and asking for some time to research it so he can get back to you with correct information. My grade was because I missed the final and slacked a lot, he's truly excellent.
The reading in this class was incredibly excessive. I'm talking more than 100 pages per week. There's also a quiz, an assignment, discussion boards, hours of power-point lectures. Then there's a paper every few weeks. You will learn a lot but the workload is insane. Get ready to work. The grader isn't too harsh as long as the content is there.
He is really a great professor. Took two classes with him this semester, both were structured the same way. Midterm and final exam, two short essays, monument assignment and a primary source analysis paper. Tough grader but gives good feedback. Also uses every second of class time. Dont skip lectures though, powerpoint are not posted online
You can tell that Dr. Kaplan is both knowledgeable and passionate about what he's teaching, however, I found his lectures extremely boring and un-engaging. They lack the fascinating cultural elements that bring ancient civilizations to life and are more focused on military history. But if you have to take him, it's not the end of the world.
Kaplan is good at lecturing. He gives a midterm and a non-cumulative final exam. The Exams are normally broken up into four parts ( term identification, passage analysis, an essay, and a section that is based either on finding places on a map or a project done in class). He gives a project and paper in his courses as well.
How the class was organized in Spring '21 allowed for you to easily pass the weekly quizzes if you simply watched the lecture and take notes while you do. For the weekly discussions, I'd recommend reading ONE of the options and verse yourself in that. Not awful; is boring.
The class requires a lot of work and has essays back to back at times. The professor bashes Christianity at times and has very strong opinions which are made very clear. Books for the class are cheap which is good but I would not take this class again . Many dropped with good reason.
Dont take this class
This Professor was very annoying, not only did he think it was okay to bash Christianity, but he also made little slick comments about race. He grades very heavy, and despite all the work you have in other classes, he still adds ALOT on top of it. Especially the reading and commenting. Dont do it.
The workload is ridiculousssssss on top of that the professor has some very problematic opinions that are made VERY clear. I should have dropped, also class will not be canceled for anything even if the ac is out and the heat is unbearable. The class was NOTHING like I expected it to be!
Professor requires a lot of work, he is a tough grader, and the class is not what it seems. I do not recommend, if you have all A's trust this will be a GPA killer.
TLDR: go to all classes, read a lot, & write multiple essays Attendance and participation is 30% of the overall grade, don't miss class or forget to comment on discussions. Readings are assigned bi-weekly and are about 10 chapters each nearing the end of the course, which is very heavy during the final few weeks with finals (should be reduced).
Class ain't it
He definitely knows what he's talking about and his lectures are fine, but its easy to struggle. There are very few graded assignments, there is lots of reading every week. The lax attendance policy bc of covid meant that all lectures were easily accessible on zoom, which made it easier to skip class. Don't take if you are weak-willed like me lol
Kaplan is clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about his subject; that is an attribute I highly appreciate in professors. I would just caution those taking his class to be organized and self-motivating. He does not assign a lot of graded assignments, so each count! He assigns a lot of reading--a lot--and greatly appreciates insight in class.
Worst class I’ve ever taken. I’d rather watch paint dry. Nothing was interesting about this class. It’s literally a Bible class not art history and get ready to read. He assigns way too much reading.
He is a nice and knowledgeable enough guy, but his curriculum is so hard to follow. I was excited for this course, but I haven't really learned anything from him because there is no rhyme or reason to his lectures and he only covers the least exciting parts of ancient Greece. Not a ton of assignments though.
I took Ancient Egypt with Professor Kaplan. I definitely struggled at times but if you do the readings and attend lectures you gain a lot from the class. I learned a lot and at the end of the semester, I felt like I learned a lot about the history of Ancient Egypt.
I used to have a passion for this subject since childhood. This class killed it. To manage this class you need to dedicate time every day of the week to it. I just finished 5 Final exams for this class on top of quizzes and discussions. This class made me so sad. The professor is very knowledgeable in his subject at least. Sadness and sorrow.
Bro literally speaks way too fast and only talks about himself the whole lectures. He pretty mcuh only shows slides of himself and where he has been in greece and tells us about it and why that we should learn about it. Gives us no time to actually pause and take notes, he pretty much just talks from bell to bell. Is not a good professor. Trust me.
Difficult if you have a full load. Uses teaching assistant for almost all grading, the TA grades all assignments extremely harsh. If you want a good grade, you have to be the kind of student who answers every question in class and pretty much write a short essay for each discussion post on top of assigned reading. Few assignments to fix a bad grade
This professors gives out A LOT of homework, most of it is just busy work honestly and most of the work is not graded just used for discussions. Unless you really want to take this class/professor, I wouldn't recommend it, he's a tough grader and this class could be a GPA killer.
If you are not a fan of history and have a lot of time to read, I would not recommend this class. We are expected to read a bunch of books and articles. The grader of the class is very tough and expects a lot of details. I do my best but of course I don't remember every detail. There are 2 exams, a paper, and discussions. he speaks really fast.
Be prepared to read! If you're not a student that can keep up with heavy reading (like me) his classes probably arent for you. However he is incredibly helpful outside of class, and he's is INSANELY knowledgeable on his topics. I was afraid of him at first, for no reason, but hes a great prof. Just be prepared to study. lots of content, be prepared
He's nice but expect to be called on every class and read a lot of assignments every week. He expects you to read 100 pages before every class when assigned the book which isn't possible. He assigns a Lot of work and never grades them questioning whether you're doing good or bad and will just have to wait until the semester is over.
If you are taking Ancient Greece, know these things to pass. He gives you a lump-sum participation grade for the Perusall readings and raising your hand in class. Do both. The Midterm is just a test on the starred terms on canvas for every lecture. He gives 2 short writing assignments. He assigns 1 big paper. Mid-term and Final. Thats all.
I wouldn't recommend this professor to anyone. He gives feedback, but whenever you use the feedback he's given in the next assignment he still gives you points off. His lectures are drawn out and you don't gather any information from them. He only outs two grades in the book and then grades drops everything else in the last week.
Would NOT take again. Attendance was mandatory you were grading on it. Every major assignment was either worth 5 points or 50. One five page essay was worth 10 points. There was lots of little weekly assignments that weren't graded. He expected you to memorize when where who and significance of over 20 terms structures and people. Class sucked.
The professor gives a lot of busy work, and the class is a real GPA killer. The workload is ridiculous, with frequent readings and essays. Though unstuck study helped me prepare, I wouldn't recommend this class unless you're really committed.
Dr. Kaplan is a good professor, knows his subject matter. On the other hand, the class was easy to follow but having to write four essays a week on top of other readings made the class more difficult. His lectures are great, but NEVER miss a class as you fall behind fast. Would take again, but will be transferring to UCF in early June.
took one of my history seminars with Kaplan, greatly enjoyed it. his lectures were amazing and he's a tough grader but has great feedback
Lectures were amazing, but you NEED to pay attention and take notes, if you don't, you are cooked. He goes fast and covers a lot every class. There are few actual graded assignments and the final paper and exam together make up 45% of your grade. He gives extra credit opportunities of up to 6 points extra on mid term and final exams, TAKE ADVANTAGE
Dr. Philip Kaplan is a solid professor; when hearing him talk about his lectures, you can tell he has a strong passion for his work, wanting to share that passion with his students. But even with all that passion, he is a tough grader. Exams require you to remember specific time periods for alot of key terms, just for there are 5 of them needed.
I have had Dr. Kaplan for Ancient Rome and Egypt now and I can safely say that I do not want to take another class of his, even though I love history and am taking it as my minor. I do not mind lecture heavy classes or reading for a history class- that makes sense. What I do not like is how he grades assignments and gives "feedback". Not helpful.
He is very knowledgeable about his topics. However, he expects the students to match his level of knowledge which was acquired over years in just a few months. He wants us to be able to identify a piece of literature and its author out of 15+ possible historians. He does not respond to emails and he seems to always think the student are wrong.
Dr. Kaplan is knowledge but HARD. 2 exams (40% of grade). Extremely detailed! One five page paper (that is graded harshly-25% of grade). Weekly readings (80+ pages) and discussion post. Not accessible outside of class. Attendance matters. A know it all. A TA grades all your work. Other small assignments. I would not recommend his class to anyone.
History is my minor and it is something I have been passionate about for many years. I love the ancient civilizations like the Greeks and Romans, and how we are still influenced by them today. I found Dr Kaplan to be very scattered at times, even when utilizing a textbook and other literature. it was hard to keep up and memorize a lot of material.
If a lot of his other ratings scare you, I recommend taking his class online. Yes you still have a lot of reading and writing to do, but the lectures are easier to take notes on. Some assignments are actually very engaging and creative. Word counts for essays ranged from 500-800, and its very easy to go over that with the information provided.
This man is very knowledgeable, but his lectures are impossible to learn from. He uses personal photos and very little text on his slides. He does not grade any of the participation work until the end. I had to withdraw from this course because of how much work I was putting into a class that wasn't even necessary for my major. GPA killer, for sure
Don't have bro. Dont even go here. Bf has him, read him the ratemyprofessor stuff, said it's too accurate. Rip yall. Good luck
Unless you have extreme prior knowledge on Ancient Greece, do not take this class. He expects an unreasonable amount of prior knowledge and without it you will be unable to follow his lessons as he jumps around often. Additionally, his presentation slides are lacking any information so you cannot miss any notes, which he gives a lot of per class.
This seminar course was focused on the Hellenistic period that followed Alexander the Great's death. While the course material was interesting and complex, given its antiquity, it was often difficult to analyze and interpret. Professor Kaplan does a fair job engaging the class and allowing for open discussion.
He is a decent professor; you can tell he knows what he is talking about, but his lectures are hard to sit through due to the fact that his slides have little information to take note of. His Testing is questionable due to the fact that he gives useless study guides and the tests are heavy on percentage for the final grade.
