Moves way too fast. Very boring- many people sleep. Bad at explaining things
Great lecturer, nice course support stuff, assignments and tests just right.
Philip Langill is very knowledgeable, but is brutally boring -- half the class is sleeping. He can waste an entire lecture and not cover any new ground. Doesn't go over enough in class to prepare you for exams. Take ASTR 205 from Alfredo Louro instead.
i dont understand him, he makes bad jokes and is boring
The previous person did not know what he is talking about. Dr. Langill is a great prof. He is quite interesting and fun.
ditto to fourth entry from bottom
I HATE physics and had to take it. However, Dr. Langill is the best physics prof I have ever had. He really made the class much more pleasant. He is always cheerful and awake, even at 8am, and tries his best to help us like physics.
Awesome prof. Charismatic, witty and energetic.
greatest teacher at the university so far. very good and entertaining teacher. thanks for a job well done.
i think it was the coureses fault and no the professors fault..
Anyone that can help me do ANY physics correctly is in my good books. Funny and quirky.
It is a boreing class but he helps make it interesting. I always had enough examples to complete the assignments.
Very good prof - although the lecture material is boring and it's really hard to make physics interesting, he does his very best. Prepares you well for exams, and gives tons of examples to do assignments/labs with. Very, very curteous to students and their questions.
Dr. Langil has made this course alot easier then you would think. His overhead notes are alittle sloppy; however, you can still follow along. He has the knowledge for this class. His office hours are quite flexible and is very helful. I suggest that you take this course with him only.
Very good at explaining things, but his notes are kind of erratic and not really helpful.
He is such a nice professor I can hardly forget although I did not take his lecture. I regret finding that point almost at the end of the semester. He helped me so much even though he knew I was not in his lecture. Good luck to Dr. Langill!
Truly a fantastic teacher. Very knowledgeable and able to teach. Also very professional and easy to respect. This is the type of person deserves the respect of being called a Professor.
He only substituted in my astr 205 class because the regular prf (Taylor) was out of town. He has a great sense of humor and explains concepts very well.
Good proff. Much better than Hicks. Explains concerpts well. Understanding.
Good lectures, but can't decipher my notes afterwards.
Good guy. Notes are very bad, they are not organized at all. However, he is a nice guy with a good sense of humour and willing to help at anytime. Cares about his students alot. If you pay attention in lecture and don't rely on notes, he is great.
Phil's a great guy. I can see why he's won awards. He is kind of all over the place but when you go to the RAO and when he's just explaining things, it just doesn't matter. You have fun because its interesting, not because you have to.
Great guy and very helpful.
Overall a good prof. But his notes organization are a little disorganized. Have a sense of humour.
Hands down, the best physics instructor at the university
He's hot and very nice
He is a nice & funny man but sometimes he irritated me. His notes are very disorganized, not cohesive. He is probably one of the better phys profs in the department. In general, the phys department is really disorganized out of all the faculties I'v encountered. Also, if you look very closely he's missing part of his finger. =) I was bored in class
Best Physics Prof I've ever had
He's SO great! He really respects his students and treats them like equals. Not at all arrogant, and funny in a cute way (oh man, chalk brush questions...) :) Very personable & charismatic. If you need organization, it is something his notes lack...but hey, he's interesting! His class is the only one I'm ever happy to go to. God bless Dr Langill!
He's the most amazing prof I've ever had. I though I hated physics and he changed my mind. He makes it easy to understand and even made the 8am class bearable. He's funny and enthusiastic, but not in an annoying way. Hes very helpful and always goes out of his way for his students. He gave us candy too... mmm
Perhaps the most stereotypical little physics nerd in history. Be patient with him. Great teacher and will go to AMAZING lengths to help people.
One of the best professors I have ever had. Very enthusiastic about the material and has a reason to be! Funnest class ever. We went out to the observatory to take pictures of stars and eat donuts. It really doesn't get much better than that. Super funny too. I totally agree with the stereotypical physics nerd comment.
As many people said, probably the most friendly prof s at U of C, great guy who knows anything from quantum physics to cosmology. His final was one of the two finals I was actually sad when it finished, that's how much I loved the whole astronomy course and his lectures. Will remain friends with him for years, he is a great person. gem at U of C
he marks really hard and gives unfair exams. lots of assignments that are not from lecture material but from textbook. attending class is useless
AWFUL PROF! His notes were terrible and useless. We had to know everything out of the book. Test and assignments were based out of the book, not the lecture. The final and midterm were frickin hard! I pretty much had to teach myself this course..Such a shame too since, astro207 with plume (who could teach astronomy to a 2 year old!) was awesome..
Langill decided on exams to not give you marks for work shown, but only for the final answer. That REALLY sucks for students who are crunch on time, yet know very well how to do things, and thus punch wrong #'s into their calc.. ie. incorrect bracket usgage.. etc. Aside from that, his notes are a scatter, and txtbook reading is necessary to do well
After having taken the pre-requisite course Phys211/221.. it seems like Dr. Hicks was a better first yr physics coordinator. Much more organized, and responded quickly to physics inquiries.
Langil is a very nice person, however he has many flaws depending on the type of student you are. his notes are ALL OVER the place, as he doesnt use the convention blackboard or powerpoint but this weird notepad where he writes out stuff himself (his printing is ugly too). Also, as a coordinator he takes a VERY long time to respond to emails.
worst prof ever. would mislead student s cos he could n't even answer qs. and spent all lecture disussing football games never taught course material, or stuff that was on exam as a result i, a valedictorian and an +A student in high school physics failed one of his midterms.....do not chose him unless failing is something you like
Langil was clear, precise, and thorough. The "A" high school student should not blame his/her incapability to learn Uni-level Science. Sorry to say, if you sucked at Physics, especially 221, you're not University material. Those A's in high school and being a valedictorian mean absolutely nothing in University. Langill present everything clearly
He was quite helpful after class, but lectures were a bore. And coverage of course material was....insufficient to say the least. His notes were messy and unorganized and even attending his lectures was quite pointless. better luck learning the course on your own from the text.
Really interesting speaker and a nice guy but not that great at teaching. His notes are horrible (he just scribbles stuff on a tablet pc) get the text book because you'll need to teach yourself a lot of things. He is way more helpful outside of class but the lectures are boring and pretty much useless.
Terrible. He enjoys rambling & likes to make little jokes just so he can laugh at himself. The notes he scribbles are basically just examples from the textbook. It's best to go to class to see what he covers, and then relearn everything from the textbook. If you plan on teaching yourself from the textbook, purchase the solution manual=lifesaver.
Horrible prof do not go with him or you will end up confused and frustrated all semester!!!!!
Buy the textbook, its the only way you will pass. His notes consist of illegible scribbles on a tablet computer and examples irrelevant to the tests he writes. Make sure to check your test marks as he likely will screw them up. he is an incompetent teacher and even worse course coordinator, he didn't even finish the material. Dont take his class!
Very poor lecturing skills. Very poor notes, they consist of diagrams copied from the textbook. Your best bet is to study from the textbook. Not helpful outside of class. Takes an unreasonable amount of time to answer emails and such.
Nice guy, very willing to help; however, clarity is not always 100%. Notes are hand written rather than on power points, so not everybody likes it. It really depends on what method you learn best with. Overall not a bad prof, lectures were a bit dry though >.<
Compared to all my 300 level courses this is a joke. I did not go to many lectures (though he does do clickers) and I studied a few days before each midterm and did decently well. Langil is a good prof, he's enthusiastic, which is a plus. If you grasp Physics easily, take Langil for an easy lecture. If you don't I recommend Bill Willson.
Well, he is passionate and a really good prof but he is always behind compared to other profs. Because he goes off topic and wastes class time and later rushes to finish it. But he is helpful after class and he does lots of question in class so you will understand it easily. however, he never replied to email regrading marks!
Excited about teaching concepts but doesn't do problems in class often and when he does they are straight from the text. Tries to get you excited about learning physics. Intelligent prof. He likes challenging students on midterms and finals.
He's a super nice and funny guy, Enthusiastic when he teaches, and makes funny big bang theory and harry potter references.
Dr Phil is so nice and really enthusiastic. Although this isn't exactly an easy course, if you do the work there are lots of opportunities for easy marks. Favorite class of the semester.
The best professor ever. He is soo funny, and such a nice guy. I always find a good laugh in class. He tends to be a bit behind but that's only because he actually tries to make his classes interesting. He's absolutely fantastic!
Dr. Phil! Very nice guy and wants people to be interested in Physics but rambles a lot in lecture and then runs out of time to talk about course material. Found my textbook really useful in this course
Great Professor. Lots of examples and extra notes provided. He goes over many problems from past exams that showed up on his midterms and final. Hard to learn if you dont attend lectures but I found I enjoyed them thouroughly. Seems happy to be teaching and is always engaged. I would recommend him to fellow students.
Nice guy, ok prof. He doesn't really go through any detail, but you will be able to get general concepts during lecture. Does not reply to e-mail. and is late to his office hours.
Best prof out there. Always willing to help. Answered out of topic (science) questions.
Dr. Langill is not a great prof for this course especially for the optics part. When asked questions, you can tell he's not good with the topic (not sure why he's teaching it). To add on, his notes are useless. Will have to rely on the textbook for this one folks…. …. ….. .
Langill is a respectable prof: very knowledgeable and intelligent. He will explain concepts, but not solve problems. He spends some time rambling and did not teach some of the material that was on the exam. His notes and lectures were hard to follow (maybe because the material itself was more difficult). He cares for students as people.
Overall, the course is pretty easy (not as easy as 221, but close). If you take the time to read the textbook, actually work on the assignments (rather than Googling answers) and attend lecture, you'll have no problem. Dr. Langill is a great guy/ instructor. His notes are handwritten, but incomplete. If you understand the material you'll be fine.
The prof is a great guy. If you need some help go to him personally and he will explain everything well. Don't even bother going 2 the lectures. If u need to, get the labs from someone who has taken the class, and copy them. if doing this, do understand the labs for the final. Everyone fails the first test, second is better and third is the easiest
patience is a virtue in this class. u may feel overwhelmed but if u keep on top of everything, things will come together in the end. He's a super friendly prof and cares about students.
HILARIOUS if you like cheesy jokes, which I do. Sometimes gets sidetracked. Huge astronomy geek. VERY friendly. Sometimes for assignments you need to pull a formula out of the textbook. It's possible to learn from either the textbook alone I guess, but there's lots of content in the textbook that isn't covered. Old exams are posted. It's a blessing
Phil is passionate about physics, but he can't teach it very well. Exams are 95% math but he hardly solves any math problems. Most of class he talks about irrelevant material and writes out poor, unorganized notes. My section was 2 classes behind the others. Exams are tough, homework every week, labseasy. Buy the text, you'll need it to pass.
Read the text before lectures and labs. Ask (and learn to create) critical conceptual questions during and especially after lectures. Don't bother taking notes. Only look at examples. Do text questions or fail. Ask him 4 help! Memorizing will fail you. Expect tough final. Try hard and you WILL do well, even with 6 courses in 1st year!
Gives clear explanations of concepts, and is very engaged in helping students to learn.
A really cool professor. You won't get bored in his lecture if you pay attention. He makes difficult concepts easier to understand than reading them on your own. However, you'll have to attend every of his lecture because he doesn't post electronic notes for each lecture as often as most professors do. He's a very fun guy.
This is relevant for any class you might take with Dr. Langill. He's a funny guy, knows his stuff (mostly). But he is the physical embodiment of the phrase "Fly by the seat of your pants", projects undergo little to no testing to ensure they are doable, and exams are not usually completed in the given time frame.
He is an excellent prof. I thoroughly enjoyed his class. He makes the notes clear and is entertaining to listen to. The labs and exams that he wrote were reasonable and were not hard to do well on. I am hoping I have the opportunity to do another one of his classes! This would be good for someone that is scared to take a physics class.
His lectures are mainly consistent of him teaching through slides and not much hand-written notes. Good at conveying information but can be unclear sometimes, so a lot of the times there is mostly learning stuff outside of class.
Physics 259 is probably the hardest class youll take in first year and attending every single lecture did not help whatsoever. I was often left confused after lectures. He doesnt explain concepts clearly and reads off of slides which doesnt help when learning something this hard. Midterm and Final were crazy hard. Online assignments were bad too.
He teaches very good. And he gives very clear lectures
He clearly has a passion for astrophysics and knows a great deal. He does have a proclivity for going off topic and sometimes this can last for 20 minutes. I feel like he should focus on the subject matter 100% of the time so we are better prepared for the next midterm. He utilizes Tophat far too much, just keep it simple!
Make sure to review the text specifically for information, as he tends to gloss over details sometimes. His slides are taken directly from the book, so cross reference them. Also, it's taken nearly a week now to post grades for the midterm, which was done by Scantron. That should really take a day or two at most.
It's an introductory astronomy course, yet this guy places a heavy emphasis on calculations. At least 40% of the graded course material has been astrophysical calculations. You'll have to remember how to manipulate formulas. My advice is to avoid this course if it's taught by someone who usually teaches physics. Definitely not a GPA booster.
He likes to go on tangents frequently, which wastes a lot of time since what he talks about on those tangents aren't important at all. He is definitely passionate about astronomy, but it often got in the way of his teaching. His incessant use of Tophat is also really annoying, even going as far as to use it for a part 2 of the midterm.
Does not respond to emails and is very rude when he actually does reply. Obvious he does not plan very far ahead for lectures as he is often very unorganized. Does not like helping students.
Honestly, this class was horrendous. Phil is beyond disorganized and unprepared, he doesn't have the exams completed until RIGHT before the actual exam date, so cannot provide even the slightest direction for studying. He literally talks into space, and rambles on about nothing. Not to mention, makes the format of tests NOT user-friendly on student
Very disorganized, students haven't received emails in timely manner, grading was too harsh for a course that is designed for non majors. Exams were formatted in very non-user friendly way and not using the provided document could result in grade reduction.
Honest to god stay clear of this prof, I BEG of you. Phys303 is supposed to be an easy elective for non majors. This is not the case. Phil makes it 100x more complicated than it needs to be, and is so unorganized its painful. Pretty sure not one student completed the final exam. I literally am speechless
I'm going to have to disagree with the others - I really enjoyed this class. Lectures were interesting and complex concepts were simplified and explained clearly. However, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's not fairly comfortable with math and the final was on the long side. A ton of the grade was basically just participation though.
To be honest, I have nothing against his personality. He was pretty nice during his lectures. I gave this score because the lectures were disorganized, and he wouldn't permanently mute students in the zoom call, despite one individual being disruptive. Also, the course seemed to spike in difficulty near the end with a long, challenging final.
ATROCIOUS. Every semester the university allows him to teach in the future is an indictment on the university of Calgary. Struggling to rate him without the use of cuss words. Class was a disappointment from start to finish and the final was unbelievably difficult, harder than any O Chem, eng or tax accounting final that would be administered.
Langill seems like a passionate and kind guy, but he is a terrible prof. Everything was disorganized, from the bare bones syllabus to the poor lectures (which spent way too long on recap). His constant use of tophat is also really annoying. Terrible at responding to emails, and that final was absurdly long and unfair. Avoid this prof if you can!
He lacks communication skills and hates answering questions in class. He had no office hours, yet he refused to reply to students questions over email. He made the class harder than it needed to be with his very disorganized teaching approach. I would definitely avoid this guy!
A disgrace to the physics department at U of C. No clarity throughout the term, Unreachable and not helpful. Final exam was abhorrent and a deliberate attempt to to torture students. Wouldnt recommend any peer to take a class with him.
Was the final long? Absolutely. However it's level of difficulty was not any more challenging than the midterm or assignments. I think most students fell into the trap of online class / open book final / not putting the effort into studying and Langill got them (rightly so). Super interesting class with relatively easy to understand concepts.
Labs are interesting and make you think, he doesnt spoon feed you, tests are long but arent we here to learn? It was a difficult time for all transitioning to online learning, he remained upbeat and positive throughout, a genuinely nice person, and quit a bit more knowledgeable than he lets on. Very interested in Astronomy.
His lectures consisted mostly of example problems so youre going to want to read the textbook to make notes of the key concepts. He utilized TopHat a lot but the only one q was given at a time and w lots of notice. He made an effort to make zoom lectures fun & entertaining and utilized breakout rooms just so we could get to socializ
THE NICEST PROF EVER. But, I STRONGLY recommend reading and taking notes from the textbook and not just relying on his lectures. His lectures sometimes rushed over important concepts which left me confused.
If you are like me and physics doesn't come to you naturally, DO NOT CHOOSE LANGILL AS YOUR PROF. He is a phenomenal person but his lectures were very poor (NO notes, longwinded confusing examples). I only survived by watching a different professor's lectures. This class put a huge strain on my mental health and Langill's lectures were a factor.
Professor Langill is a very caring and enthusiastic prof. I found his lectures challenging to pay attention to because they were unstructured and did not have let lecture slides.
Does not give enough time to finish assignments. Wastes class time and gives many hours of tutorials that have to be watched outside of class. Worst teacher I have ever had. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
Big fan of his lectures and the way he explains certain complicated concepts. As I am an arts major this was very helpful. Midterm exam was conducted through TopHat, and locked you out if you left the exam window (even though the exam was "open book"). Assignments are the perfect length and not too difficult with plenty of time to finish them.
Nice guy but awful prof. We had to do a project in which he didn't include a certain requirement because he thought it was obvious, needless to say no one in the entire class had said requirement and therefore not only took off marks but we had to redo the project for a 25% bonus. Does not give enough time nor reply to emails. AVOID THIS PROF.
Really passionate guy and would totally recommend this class for someone who is good at math and physics. However, please think carefully if you aren't strong with math. I am not and the math components of this class have been a real struggle.
Very kind, accommodating professor. Very funny, light-hearted, cares a lot about his subject, but his lectures were a little unnecessary (lots of tangents). If you read the textbook and do well on the assignments, you'll be fine. But make sure you have good mathematical knowledge or you probably won't do well.
The lectures were often unnecessary and he likes to go on some tangents. There is more math than expected In the course so if you're an arts major looking for a science requirement beware. The textbook was really helpful and the main thing you need to do well. You have to purchase an extra online code for assignments.
Dr. Langill is a nice guy who tries to make class fun but his lectures weren't my cup of tea. Don't take this class if math isn't your strong suit, in-class Tophat questions will stress you out. He's very hit-or-miss when it comes to emails so go to office hours if you have a question. Tests were straightforward, read the text and you'll be good.
Phil is truly an enigma of a professor. On one hand, he's a real nice guy who is obviously knowledgeable and passionate about Astrophysics. On the other hand, his lectures are scatterbrained, and projects are large, difficult, and sometimes a bit confusing. However, lecture material and project info improved in quality over the semester a bit.
I took this class as a GPA booster, boy was I wrong. This was worst class I've taken in 4 years. The textbook was the only way to learn information because he lectured superficially about the topic. I've never had to read so much in my life. Gave little explanation of math so you had to figure it out yourself, hard even for someone good at math.
Dr. Langill was utterly disorganized. Although he had a goofy personality, his online learning experience was just awful. There was little to no explanation about the site used for textbooks and homework, and he had no answers when these concerns were brought up in class. Doesn't respond to emails and spends the majority of the lecture rambling.
His lectures are not great and you are having to figure out all of these things on your own. If you do take this class, make sure you study from the textbook since he doesn't actually teach you anything during lectures. He creates notes on the spot and doesn't follow a specific lesson plan. Do not take this course if it is not needed
Phil is the sweetest man ever, from bring your pet to class day to crazy hat day, he was so kind and funny. On the other hand as an actual prof he is not super great. Super unclear notes and I feel like I don't know how to do anything in this class.
Super nice guy tries to make online class fun, but lectures are extremely hard to follow and understand what he's trying to teach. Never had prepared notes and seemed all over the place trying to write out and explain different topics. The textbook is a lifesaver if you want to learn how to actually answer the test questions.
He's a sweet guy but he's really not a good prof. The textbook is also somewhat inadequate for the assignments at times, but it's all you've got unless you want to sit through his classes which are half an hour of tangents + 15 minutes of a rushed lecture full of mistakes. He often came up with practice problems that had mistakes and helped no one
Dr. Langill doesn't spoonfeed the content like in high school, so it requires active learning on the student's part (ie you can't just listen to the lectures or read his notes.) He loves using tophat (for marks) which is terrifying at first, but the questions are actually very helpful for studying! Overall, an enthusiastic, engaging, and fun prof!
Langill is a nice man, and he does care about his students, however he is not great at actually teaching. His notes and teaching method are very disorganized. He tends to gloss over important topics and has the habit of rambling about nothing. I relied entirely on the textbook in this class, thankfully the textbook is a VERY useful resource!
Very sweet guy, and lectures were decent when he was actually teaching, but this was rare as he was quite disorganized. Main reason for low rating is because he was awful at responding to emails and questions, tended to ignore emails. Did not prepare you fell for the quizzes, so I would suggest getting the textbook.
His classes are very disorganized, honestly I dont recommend. If I hadnt taken physics in highschool I would have failed
Dr. Langill is an extremely kind, funny, and quirky guy. However unfortunately his lectures are so disorganized and unclear. My notes were a constant mess and I always felt as though I had no idea what I was learning. The labs are the only reason I got a half decent mark.
great guy, stupendous energy but lectures are not teaching much. personality > teaching skills.
-Lectures are unorganized -Notes are messy -You will feel lost -A lit of the things he say is not related to the assignments -Have to rely on textbook cause he does teach -He scams you by having to pay and do homework for pearson -Exams are on tophat which is terrible
Langill was a nice and caring professor. His lectures could be slightly confusing but I blame it on his absolute passion for his field. He did have his exams on Tophat which were insanely confusing but would always try his best to support us. I would read the textbook more if you want to do well in this class but would take a class of his again!
Lectures are really heavy especially when math is involved, gets hard to listen to him for an hour and 15. Teaching style is talking at you and not really explaining. Assignments can be easy depends on your understanding, tophat questions in lectures that you can't make up and count for participation.
unless your passion is astronomy, do not take this class with this prof, he tends to lose track of what he is teaching and what is actually necessary.
The Lectures are an absolute waste of time, he spends a lot of time rambling however he is a rather nice guy. I would just recommend just treading the textbook to be honest. Way too much math for a Astronomy course.
Dr Langill has a lot of passion for the material he teaches. ...enough that he gets off topic sometimes. The class is really easy if you have high school physics. The in-class tophat questions for grades were stressful. His lectures did give me a good appreciation for the content, though, even if a hefty amount of self study was involved.
Phil is a mess. His grading is random and so are his teaching methods, Most of the content on the exams and assignments are seemingly unrelated to in-class content. He has very poor organizational skills.
Took 221 in the fall;Dr. Langill is a lovely man, but his teaching approach is just not it. His notes were rough notes written on the spot on word, and he frequently skipped major topics because we "are experts at that already". As someone who struggles with physics, I can't have a professor skip basics when explaining. Not accessible outside class
Langill is the worst prof I have ever had. He needs to retire because his old folk-sy , pseudo caring ways deceive how scatter brained and useless he is. To put it into perspective our class complained to the dean two times about him. The final was absolutely brutal because he threw a tantrum for not being allowed a two part final by the faculty.
Dr. Langill is very nice but he is not a good prof. I liked his lectures, but that doesn't make up for the fact that he was disorganized, clueless, and vague with his instructions. He did not stick to the outline and left us in the dark about important things until the last second often. His final exam was also unacceptable in my opinion.
It's really obvious that Dr. Langill loves his field. Did I retain everything that I learned? Probably not. But if I decided that I wanted to learn even more about space, I would happily go to Dr. Langill for another course. He wasn't the best prof I encountered, but he was pretty good!
Professor Langil is one of the worst profs I have had. Although he is quite nice, he is also very unorganized and did not follow the course outline properly. His final exam was brutal and unreasonable too. Do not take a course with this professor
decent guy, bad prof
Prof Langill definitely loves his work and has a strong understanding of the subject. He does often end up going off-topic. He is also not very tech oriented and does not post updates or reminders on D2L like other profs. he did orgnise a field trip for us:) HW quizzes are easy (answers on quizlet). Exams online, had to pay for mastering astronomy
Good teacher, loves physics, laugh at his physics jokes.
He is always late, disorganized, and struggling with technology. He makes every subject so much more complicated than it is. His notes are nearly illegible, and never uploaded on time. He intentionally ignores student feedback, don't expect him change anything. He skips fundamental knowledge, and cannot understand student questions.
Philip Langill was a very adorable professor, but his lectures were very random and useless.
He seems very passionate about physics but forgets to teach basic concepts, often skipping over key ideas and going off on different tangents. He was late and was overall unorganized with concepts. His notes were even worse as it was all chicken scratch, if you wanted to go back through the notes goodluck because you cannot decipher his words.
Do not go to his lectures. Take any other prof if you can. If you are stuck in his class, go to Dr. Plume's lectures, Plume is really great! Dr. Langill is a really nice guy, but he isn't a good professor.
The professor is very sweet he makes jokes and tries to lighten up the mood. Overall as a person he is great. His lectures are not the best. If you take the course attend a different profs lectures. Reading the textbook will be your greatest Resource through as his lectures are not organized.
He's a very enthusiastic person about physics and math in his lectures which is appreciated. He was my favourite professor this semester, but that said he wasn't very effective at teaching course material. He often went on tangents about things that don't matter for the course and often missed covering even basic concepts that were tested on.
Confusing professor who does not follow any slides or readable notes. I ended up reading the slide of another professors because his notes were a) not readable b) does not have the question imbedded so you are deciphering random numbers. I went to his office hours quite a few times but there was so much people I had to wait 2 hours for other ppl
Dr. Langill is very engaging in his lectures. He cares about his students and does what he can to ensure their success. His notes are difficult to read, however, if you show up to lectures and read the sections in the textbook he advises you to, you should do just fine. Dr. Langill is also very accessible outside of class.
Snarky, disorganized prof who pretends he cares.
He is a very funny guy and seems very interested in physics. However, the lectures are very disorganized and you will have to spend a lot of time teaching yourself the course.
I leave class more confused than when I came in and I took physics 20/30 in highschool. Makes up equations on the spot that sometimes don't even have an answer, and relies on students to do the calculations for him. He doesn't base his lecture around powerpoints, his lecture notes on D2L are impossible to understand as it's random numbers/drawings
I am a Astrophysics major and tbh, I thought this class was going to be my favourite from the semester. Physics still is but, I don't like his lectures. Lack of material organization and basic concept reviews. Don't get me wrong, I like his energy a lot, very passionate guy for what he does but his teaching method is not really for me.
Don't waste your time going to lectures, he doesn't have a slideshow or anything that he teaches from. Instead, he spends all lecture jumping around topics and doing random questions that sometimes don't even have a solution. The only classes you should attend are the tophat ones, even then it's not super important as it's only 3% of the grade.
Dr.Langill is a very passionate and caring individual. However, his teaching method was not great in my opinion, other profs had much more organized slides. If you have the option, choose a different prof(even if the timings are worse). Notes are pretty all over the place.
Very nice guy and passionate about science. His teaching skills are very disorganized. I was so much more confused then needed and ended up going to phys 221 lectures since he was the only prof who taught 211 in fall He gets off topic quite a bit. I attended all classes for a month before deciding to try another prof and learnt absolulety nothing.
Funny and nice guy but I barely learned anything in his class. He doesn't use slides and just makes up practice problems on the spot, and doesn't introduce topics properly, making it very confusing. I stopped going to lectures halfway into the year because I wouldn't learn anything, had to use other professors notes to properly learn the content.
Dr. Langill is a very funny and nice guy, but I don't think he knows how to teach concepts very well. He explains things strictly through practice problems from the textbook or his own, which leaves out important information and explanations are often incomplete. You can still succeed through reading and practicing from the textbook, however.
Super nice dude but lectures were a waste of time, He's good at describing basic principles but the practice problems weren't helpful imo because 70% of the time he only used units instead of actual numbers. I would only suggest taking courses with this prof if you have the time and energy to teach yourself outside of class.
I really appreciated his enthusiasm for the subject and the way he involved students during the lecture time. However, I didn't find his teaching to be very useful. He didn't use any structured notes, which would have been very helpful. I wish he focused more on doing practice problems that more accurately reflected what would be on the tests.
An absolutely amazing professor who clearly has a passion for physics and cares about his students. I looked forward to his nerdy physics jokes and his lectures. My only complaint is most of my learning came from the textbook, but overall he was great. Also very helpful and accessible outside of class.
Really funny and nice guy, but the lectures are completely useless. I would rather not go, but there is a tophat quiz everyday for grades, so you have to. The lectures are just him talking about what he wants to, hardly ever relates to what we have to know. Really basic math that turns out to be hard because he doesn't teach it. Lots of reading!
1. The lectures suck. He rambles every time and takes forever to actually teach. Which would be fine if 5% of the grade wasn't bound to it. 2. He has a very weird project involving AI (bing copilot, microsofts chatgpt ripoff), and iirc it was to see if it was a good idea to have in uni. It's not. I don't care. pro: its ez
great guy but terrible prof. Lectures are mandatory but for most of them, he teaches for maybe 15 minutes of it. The rest, he just rambles on about random things that he wants to talk about. Assignments were alright but took a month to get graded. No point in doing this class, just download the textbook, read through it and you'll know more than us
He's a nice guy, but his classes are so boring. He doesn't really teach us anything until the first hour of class passes. His slides also suck, and he doesn't answer questions in class. The only pro is that he actually teaches and answers questions in office hours.
I think some comments are unfair. He's animated and passionate about the topic, seems like a fair grader, and is more engaging than profs who just read off power point slides for an hour, because his lectures give real examples and demonstrations of the concepts from the (100% free) textbook. You just have to engage if you want to learn.
Lectures were pretty useless only taught for like the last 45min of the class just read the text book and take good notes. Participation on daily tophat mandatory. Group project was AI based, didnt really have anything to do with the class other then the prompts asked. Final exam was rough and some questions were never mentioned in class or book.
Prof Langilll was an amazing prof, we had 6 assignments total for this class, the class is textbook heavy but if you read the textbook you can keep up easily. It is an easy class just very material heavy as is any other class. Amazing and interesting lectures he tries to make the lectures very fun and informative
the content in the class itself is pretty easy considering i did highschool physics, topics are pretty much the same. i stopped showing up after a month, he gets sidetracked very easily. i can tell hes passionate about astronomy considering how much he would talk about it in class so maybe take that with him. hes still super approachable and nice.
Dr. Langill is a passionate professor, but his teaching style can be disorganized. I found the textbook and resources like unstuck AI more helpful for understanding the concepts than the lectures. If you're willing to put in the effort, the class is manageable, but a different professor might be better suited.
Condescending, poorly prepared and flaky in the extreme. Not a good prof, not a good person.
Professor Langill is a good prof, but his teaching style is not adequate. his way of teaching is throwing a slide up on the projector and just talks about, does not hand out notes prior to lecture times and often gets sidetracked while he speaks. The class is very textbook oriented as not a lot of teaching gets done in class.
Dr. Langill was a very good professor, I just struggled with the material. I will say that you can find the textbook he uses online for free at Anna's Archive. This course is pretty content heavy and he values attendance by having tophat worth 5% of your final grade, he also had weekly assessment that are together worth 35% to help.
Often during lectures the material is extremely hard to follow, as he jumps around and switches topics very fast. Clearly knows his stuff and is very interested in it, and keeps the mood alive during lectures, but again hard to follow. Exams are difficult but many questions come from the assignments.
This prof never responds to emails. His slides are very disorganized, and he made this course more about math than what the description of the course sought out to be. This was NOT a GPA booster as many claim to be, although, it was his first time teaching this. No excuse, however, as he was always very seclusive about the next group activity.
It's totally a different class compared to the Phys371 in last year, way tougher to study and this class suppose to be a booster at all. How could the class average for a mid-term is lower than 80However he might seem to be a funny guy sometimes but for me I just prefer staying at home at scrolling the tophat questions on my bed than going to class
Awesome dude! assignments are made to learn, not challenge and classes are fun
goes on irrelevant tangents during lectures doesn't actually go through the content, half of what is tested is from a website or things that aren't mentioned in class, never goes through calculations in class, does not give enough formulas on the exams nor are they given during lectures, terrible class
Don't take PHYS 371 with him. His lecture slides are disorganized making it hard to understand what material you actually need to study with most of the midterm and final questions coming from the online textbook and assignments. You can tell he's passionate about physics but he doesn't a good job in teaching this course
Get ready for group projects where your partners will be randomly chosen by d2L, but all you have to do is hand it in on time and you get a 100. Unlimited attempts on online quizzes, so do them till you get a 100. He does tophat everyday but he will boost your grade at the end of the semester. However, tests are hard…lectures slide are no help.
