I hate math, but he was a really good teacher, so it made up for it. He assigned tons of homework, but it helped me learn. His test are very relevant to his lectures and the homework. I was able to get throught the class without an algebra II background.

I barely passed Calc in high school but now i actually understand it even though I just took it as a GE. Hes not an easy teacher but he explains things so well and he really cares about his students.always holds review sessions before tests and is SO helpful in office hours. Put in some effort and calc will easily become one of your best subjects

I have little intrest in math, but if you have to take a math GE, I would take him. He's very helpful and even would come in on the weekends before a test and have study sessions. He's a little hard to understand at times, but he's also rather funny too. His tests are hard if you don't study, but if you know the notes, you'll do well on the tests.

Class was difficult for me (I'm horrible at math) and most ppl I know in there, but from what I've heard Lau is one of the easier professors. He's really helpful and patient and a really nerdily cool guy. Demanding but also rewarding and you'll learn the stuff well.

Class consists of 5 reg exams, usually around 15 problems a night of homework, which is all due at the next test. Attempt all the homework and get 100%. Tells you exactly what's on the final.

This class is really hard, you have to study a lot for the tests. Philip will reschedule an exam for your needs, and he is really funny! Haha what a guy. Even though I hate math, it was still fun to listen to him and his jokes, which are usually unintentional

This is the best math teach i've had in 10 years! Hes funny and abhores calculators. He actually teaches rather than instructs. You're friends will be jealous of how easily you understand all the ins and outs of calculus. I'm taking him for calc II next semester.

Professor Lau is an amazing teacher. Definitely the best math teacher you can possibly find. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to learn and do well at the same time. Lau will also have you laughing out loud frequently. However, the class itself is extremely difficult. You cannot miss class, must do all the homework and study.

I took a course from this guy years ago. I was a great experience, and gave me a solid foundation. Going in, I wasn't that interested. Now I make my living (a very good living) with math, as an actuary.

I love math but would usually learn nothing in class. With most of my math teachers I would just read the book during their lecture because it was of no benefit to me. Attending his class everyday now saves me hours of time at home. I could not imagine their is a better math teacher out there A+++++.

I love Lau! He explains the concept, and gives example after example and if you still don't understand go to his office hours! He is very funny, in an awkward/corky way. If you're comfortable with math you'll do well, if you've always struggled with math, you probably won't do well.

High expectations. He explains the topics clearly and provides many examples. The Differential Equations part of the class is not that hard. The algebra is what makes this class more difficult. Lau is funny and really cares about his students. He is available during office hours to help with anything.

He is such an awesome math professor. Definitely my favorite that I've had here at USD. He is clear and makes the material seem very simple. He makes class entertaining. If you have to take 311 then you definitely want to take him for 310 so that you learn things the way he want you to know them.

He doesn't make class easy, but he also doesn't make it boring. He's a good professor and I would choose him over any math professor I've had at this school. Get ready for a lot of homework though. It was always due the day of the test, so try and spread it out.

Funny as hell and honestly the best math teacher I've ever had. He's super patient and great at explaining things slowly. Gives you lots of opportunities for easy points. A pretty easy A. However, if you never show up to class, ask for special treatment, act disrespectfully, he will not be as lenient! But, that's pretty much just human decency.

Has 3-5 exams a semester plus Final. He is reasonable with extra credit. Difficult material but he teaches it very well and is clear about what you should know. Not easy, but is the best professor in this department.

Excellent Teacher. Knows everything about Math. He sleeps and eats math. His expectations are extremely high. I recommend not taking his class if your not and an A or B student in previous math classes. He takes pride that his class is harder than all others. Hardest class I have taken in my college career. An absolute genius, but he expects you to keep up with his intelligence and speed. If you don't get the material, you're screwed. Office hours were SO helpful though. Hilarious, and he knows how to explain one topic eight different ways to appease all different styles of learning. Hard, but worth it.

Prof Lau is possibly one of the best professors I have taken at USD. He is so clear about his expectations, and although many students claim that his exams are difficult, they don't stray too much from the in-class examples and the homework. I loved Dr. Lau. I had him for Math 310 & Calc 2, and he's by far one of my favorite professors. The material was difficult given the content that needed to be covered, but he always made sure to explain it in a clear, effective way, answering any questions we had. He also went in more depth during office hours. He also had the best dry humor.

Prof. Lau is very clear in his grading, there is no curve at the end as with other professors. There is a lot of homework and the extra practice problems are necessary in order to do well on his exams. However, he will make sure that you do understand the material. This class requires a lot of work but you will have a better understanding of math.

Professor Lau has been 1 of my favorite math teachers ever. He's very welcoming and has great humor that keeps the class engaging. When he teaches provides many additional examples that help you complete the homework. He may pick random people to answer questions, but he is very reassuring even if you get the wrong answer.

Prof. Lau is a brilliant/funny professor however this isn't a class you can get by with doing the bare minimum. Hw load is heavy and effort is required but if you are ok with that he is a great professor. Tests/quizzes are worth 55% of the final grade so you really have to work to keep your average up. He is also easily accessible outside of class

His lectures are really helpful and he uses the book at times but his ways of doing math is much easier than the textbook. If you are willing to work, do all the homework, and attend office hours then I suggest you take this class. Professor Lau was a great teacher and knew the information well. He was entertaining and had a good attitude during class. I had a hard time keeping up with the pace of his lectures but, that doesn't change the fact he's a great teacher. Trust me Professor Lau is the person you want for Math 310. Put in the work and you will get a good grade. He is not an easy professor but he does a good job a helping students understand. Don't be afraid to ask questions even if he seems to be a little stern in his responses it will only benefit you. Stay quiet and you won't get much help.

I took this for my math requirement and tbh i suck at math but i do think Professor Lau is good at his job. If you score below a 70% on a test/quiz, you can do corrections to make up for some points (you can earn a 70% max after corrections on that test). This course was focused a lot on derivatives so if you dont get them, you will not pass!

Such a funny professor. I genuinely loved his class even though I hated math. He really understood the material and went over helpful notes and examples in class. As long as you pay attention in class, you will do well. He is also helpful when you ask for help. I recommend his class if you have the opportunity.

My man Philip Lau is the realest and most mature professor I had. Not only is he smooth at teaching math, his office hours, though the space is small, is filled with surprises. I recommend to always visit his office hours for help, test corrections, or getting to know him personally. Also, I was lowkey his favorite student, no offense.

Professor offers lots of extra credit opportunities and is a fair, and easy grader. He wants you to succeed in the lower division courses. He uses a good textbook that is easy to follow and he breaks down the topics well. Accessible during office hours and gives us a homework where we have to present in order to boost our grade. I'd take again!

For Calc 2: Very good professor, always clearly explained things and makes sure everyone understands. Tests and quizzes can be hard and frequent, but he prepares you well.
