Loves to speak OVER class' head. Uses terms like at first blush and carte blanche alot (to add to the confusion. Needs to forget that he spoke at Oxford or Harvard (I forget which one) and speak to us in a language we can understand!
Mr. MacEwen is an alright prof, he tries hard to make the students understand the ideas and concepts, but at times can be quite confusing.

He is odd. There was a blackout in his class, and he didn't realize. He just continued teaching through it, oblivious. When asked why Elvis was on a book cover, upon mentioning women, he turned all red and began shaking. Nice guy and all, but very odd.
This guy is a terrible prof. I hated every Monday at 7:00 p.m. having to listen to this bore. He teaches Modes of Reasoning, yet he is the most unreasonable man I know. You suck Phil.
Phil is a very intelligent man. However, he is a tough marker for essays. No matter how good of a paper I wrote, I received a B+!
If i would have started university taking this class i would not have continued. He was not clear and i found him to judge answers on his interpretation not on fact. Avoid him if possible.
Absolutely the worst prof. Don't consider recieving any help or a bump in your mark
A really good Professor, who has a good grasp of the subject that he is teaching in a class.

A nice guy but extremely boring. In tutorial he likes to talk for 2 hours just to hear the sound of his own voice. Also an extremely tough marker. No matter what kind of essay you write, never expect more than a B. I got one A with him in 2 years I had him, and that was rare.
He is an alright prof. even though pretty boring. But overall he is a reasonable guy.
This man is the most arrogant prof I've ever encountered. He loves the sound of his voice, shuts down legitimate view points that conflict his and is hostile to students of different opinions. This man belongs in a religious institution as he doesn't provide an enviroment conducive to learning.
This course is about learning how to argue effectively or to critique arguments effectively. He is often late for class. Very good tutorials. However, essay questions need to be worded more clearly. Final exam has many unusual grammatical questions to bring the class average down. Very intelligent man - my least fav. course of the entire year.
This prof was great...i found modr to be really easy...most people i know finished with a B or higher. He gives take home tests, open book tests, and group essays. I didn't even read the book and i did pretty well in the course and i've recommended him to friends
Horrible professor. Does not understand his own concepts (I actually went to other profs and they concurred with me that he makes no sense), and he often completely misinterprets what he is teaching. He has a very formulaic way of teaching, much like "paint-by-numbers" only with professing. His only saving grace is that he marks easy.
Most terrible Pro. I have ever seen. He is a swellhead!!!!Also, he discriminates against people whose first language is not English. It is a truth, some people have experienced his discrimination already. So if you are ESL student, don't ever choose his course!!!!
techniques of persuasion...pretty easy class. Took it in the summer, people I know finished with at least a B or higher (I got a B+ . . . didn't really have to try.
phil is an alright prof. i like how he goes into a thesis regarding the texts read every week, however, there are rare occurrances where he can be confusing. my t.a. is a large help in understanding it all though. & on a final note, he honestly looks like kenny rogers.
Hes not a bad prof. Can keep you interested, easy-ish marker. Only he chooses favorites and is a bit intimidating becuase he seems judgemental.
had him as my TA for HUMA 1160, not sure about him as Prof, but as my TA he gave us ALL the answers before the tests and marked really well. One of the BEST TAs i have come across, I'm trying to find one of his classes to take next year.
TERRIBLE! Rude, pompous and incomprehensible. He was teaching his particular views as facts instead of the general foundations from the text based on logic. He would arbitrarily change his point of view in mid class and mid-sentence, as if he was learning while he taught. CONFUSING! I have NO RESPECT. He is CLOWN SHOES! An Inadequate teacher.
I liked him at first, but eventually he managed to confuse me every class. I will go into tutorial basically understanding everything and he just complicates EVERYTHING. Students will ask questions and he begins to answer it, but goes off topic and never answers the original question. If you re-ask the question, he does the same thing.

Not what I would consider a good prof. He never answered a question directly and often went off topic. He even argued against his OWN points! He tended to speak down at his students - I don't think he even wanted to be there, I know I didn't! His marking scheme is all over the map! Arrogant, rude. A complete waste of time!
You will learn nothing. He's incredibly confusing and will not answer any questions coherently. When you're given the exam answers, memorize everything he says and regurgitate it on the exam and you will get a decent mark (B range). If you attempt to answer the questions yourself and show that you learned something, he'll give you a bad mark.
He's very confusing, really don get him......he's a hard marker...he wants da students to thnk or write da way xactly wat he wants. nva take his class, he made the sub harder, thought of getting an A+ here but alas he ruined my whole grade...he's literally an idiot.
Incredibly difficult, in content and in style.
drop his class if the semester hasnt started yet, otherwise you'll hate yourself for not doing it
This guy is an absolute idiot! The first day of class seemed exciting because he is different but it is his differences which makes every class a living disaster! Dont bother asking questions cuz it will seem like hes B.Sing the answer right to your face and dont expect him to answer emails either. He lives in a cave!
I dont know why ppl are complaingin...he is really good real well thought out explanations and well structured lectures...sad we had to change half way throuhg the year. APPRECIATE HIM WHILE YOU CAN
He cannot explain things well or properly and makes you more confused. As well, I feel like a lot of the stuff he teaches, he doesn't even know it well himself! He also has very strict, pointless ways of setting up answers that students must follow for full marks.
This guy lacks clarity in explaining fallacies, and his criteria for evaluation often contradicts what is said during lecture, apathetic to students' concerns. The course itself is very interesting, so feel free to take this course, just stay away from this guy if you are looking for quality in your education.
this prof is hard.. no doubts.. however, if u attend his lectures and listen to him you will get an A for sure.. i ended up with an A in this course just by following his instructions. gives open book tests, exams and group work..
This prof is really nice. He tends to boost up marks if the average is low which is great but hes strict when it comes to marking. His tests are open book but the textbook doesn't help much. Its an easy A if you attend the class and catch up with the readings
I really enjoyed his class, although I did find him to be a bit unfair when it came to marking. He made it up to everyone by boosting marks, though. Very useful class!
very dull lectures: he didnt have slides prepared, his visual aids consisted of him typing in a word doc while speaking. followed the info in the textbook, but also covered a bunch of stuff that wasnt in the book. seems to favour people based on their seat choice (on the first day he even made a comment about people sitting front and centre)
He is really friendly. He taught everything clearly. (Though it's dull stuff.) His marking is fair only if you follow every little instruction he gives you. I liked him as a prof, very helpful and he did half of the assignments for us, just change it a little and you're good. Easy course overall.
He is very interested in what he teaches, but doesnt really capture the students attention. He is very intelligent, perhaps a little to intelligent for a 1000 level course
One of the best professors i have ever encountered in my first year. One word: Awesome!
I had him in the summer, pretty easy but he's not that interesting. He gives out sample tests/exams and they're almost identical to the actual ones. First essay's pretty easy as well, second is a bit harder but very possible to get an A in this class, you have to go to lecture though he doesn't use the textbooks much other than for sample questions
Lectures are very dull. Open book tests, but they are very tricky. He does't post anything online, but gives great notes in class that are helpful for the tests. The class isn't too bad if you keep interest in it.
If you ever have Phil just do as he says. If you dont you wont get the marks. I got an A in the Huma 1160 only by doing what he asked us to do on the exam and trust me you will get an A as well. Overall he's an OK TA, if anything he is way to intelligent for this class but the key is to do what he asks you to do.
WOW what a boring class was techniques of persuasion because of this guy. SUPER CONFUSING. you ask a question, he tries to answer for 5 minutes and when he is finally done talking youre left with more questions. terrible...
Does not post anything online, but he does type it all out while talking. he gets confusing at times and sometimes shouts. hard marker and likes to do group essays. 3 tests and 2 group essays. he is a nice guy, and is very helpful.
Makes all his notes in class so you have to go to copy them or else you won't get them. Test are just multiple choice/ true and false, but the questions leave you second guessing yourself so it gets kind of tricky. Easy course though, I wouldn't stress over it. Open book for all tests/exams. He's a good lecturer, keeps his classes short.
He is hard but fair marker. Class can be boring at times but I found him a rather interesting prof who is really helpful. He will give out the answers to exactly what needs to be included in your essay for an A IF you ask him to look over drafts. Tests contain some lecture exclusive material, best not to miss a class. Getting an A is very possible
His class is interesting and easy to attract me although I took it at summer. you don't need write paper at all, only two test+final exam. and for the final exam, he already give you topic for preparing, so it's easier to get mark. He also is a patience and friendly man, answer your question in details.
Lectures were extremely boring and confusing, didn't learn very much from the course as it was difficult to understand his train of thought (as he often contradicted himself). The tests seemed easy with a few mctrue false questions however they were often tricky and not easy to do well. Group assignments torture in an already horrible class!
This guy is awful, clearly he made tenure and now couldn't care less. He sprung a test on us, and when we got results back we were apparently all mindless droves. Except for when we proved him wrong, then we were rude on top of that. If you see his name when taking this class, avoid it.
5 person group essay for 500 words. So vague, he just stands at the front of class and makes up an essay as he goes along. avoid at all costs.
I went in to go ask him what I can do to get a better grade in his class. He took it the complete wrong way ended up giving me a lecture on why he doesn't hand out A's. K thanks for the help.
Really boring lectures. Does not post any material on moodle so if you miss a class you missed the lecture. he expects really precise answers for the tests which most people dont get! Would not recommend it if you are trying to take a course to boost your gpa. definitely not a course about social issues.
Do not take this class. You have been warned. Choose something else!
He is absolutely horrible!! He is ill-prepared, bad-tempered and confusing. His tests are completely random, the right answer being what he thinks it is and not necessarily what you studied. Easily the worst professor I have ever had.
Took MODR 1730. EASY if you took high school philosophy. NOTHING to do with social issues. Finding fallacies, rules, arguments. No homework. 2 group essays. Will help you if you ask but can't understand regardless. Trick questions. Tests/20 & exams are open book/notes (not helpful). Small Class. Flip back attendance to sign in for past classes.
Terrible professor. Regularly contradicts himself, attempts to answer simple questions for minutes at a time only to end up tripping over his own words, and I constantly felt like I was being taught by someone who was no more knowledgeable on the subject than I.
Do not take his course, he has no idea what he is teaching. He went over the same concept multiple times, im guessing he forgot he taught something already. His tests, exams and assignments are VERY ambiguous and his marking is very inconsistent. I have A+'s in all my other courses except his. Would not recommend.
philip macewen is the worst professor i've ever had. he rambles on forever, he gives 5 examples for 1 question, which repeats what he says over and over again. his marking is arbitrary, he rambles for 90% of the lecture time, and although the form of tests is "easy", his teaching skills are terrible and it shows through that. my goodness, avoid him
Great prof. Passionate about his area of focus. Teaches well, and is enthusiastic. Loved taking this class. Answers questions, is approachable and is a fair marker.
Please avoid his classes as they are confusing, off-topic, and opinionated. Grading criteria/assistance for assignments were vague and unhelpful. He would return assignments in a week only for the class to receive roughly the same mark. If you did not write like him he wouldn't give you the marks. His feedback was harsh. I'm glad the class is done!
Please avoid his classes as they are confusing, off-topic, and opinionated. Grading criteria/assistance for assignments were vague and unhelpful. He would return assignments in a week only for the class to receive roughly the same mark. His feedback was harsh. However, if you actively participate and attend classes he would reward you in the end.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! He expects you to know things beyond the textbook and cuts your marks because of that. Took this course in my last year. Had to drop it because of him. When I asked him about my low marks he said A+ is for those who teach the prof new things. (P.S. I have done really well in all my other gen-eds. A & A+s) YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
This Professor is very good. I love his lectures. A must take
The worst prof ever. Very off topic and confusing. Does not know how to teach. Assignments are horrible and his feedback is no help either. Teaches himself the material while he is teaching the class. Also tends to randomly start shouting during his lecture (which is @ 8am btw!) Makes a simple and easy class so confusing. Would never take him again
Not a fan of his lecture styles and his classes are boring.
easy class but very tough grader
Philip was an overall great prof. In full honesty, his lectures are boring most of the time, but he gives great guidance for the assignments. I took the course fully online so it was 5 assignments 20% each, and he would have us (in groups) answer the assignment in one paragraph. Overall easy course, very respectable, but a little boring.
He marks unnecessarily hard. He will literally say "great job on this, I like this, this, this - 12/20" like ??? picky for the sake of being picky
This is my second class with Philip Macewan. The first one was MODR 1760. In both of those he was extremely harsh on the marking. His lectures are also pointless because he just reads off of his slides/notes which are already online. The group project set up is also pathetic. Overall, take the class with a different prof if you must.
The marking scheme is based on making it difficult to get an A in their class with C to C+ being the average grade. The TA is strict when marking and provide no help even when you reach out to them. They tend to insult you in their "helpful correction" comments. The assignments seem easy(5 group members and 1 question worth 20% times 5) but are not.
Want to drop ur gpa? Take this course because the TA's could care less about ur grade. As long as they follow MacEwen's instruction to give low marks while teaching their students poorly, because he does not believe in giving A's.
The overall course content was not very useful. I did not like the overall setup of the course. The worst part of this course was the prof who was extremely boring, rude, and unprofessional. My experience at York has been nothing but positive until I took this course. I would never take a course with this prof again.
Philip is pretty awful. Can't say much more than that because he lacks any sort of depth that would allow for a greater explanation of his personality. Avoid if you can!
I read the rate my prof reviews before the deadline to drop the course and I thought people were exaggerating how bad of a prof he is. It's only 5 writing assignments how bad could it be right? DO NOT make the same mistake I did and drop the course immediately. My guess is he has a superiority complex and gets a thrill by giving students bad grades
RUN! DO NOT WALK, RUN! JUST RUN! PLEASE DO NOT BE FOOLED BY HAVING 5 ASSIGNMENTS!! RUN AWAY AND DON'T LOOK BACK!!!!
if you see this prof's name RUN. we were three groupmates and end up dropping this course. RUNN
This guy is a harsh marks. Do not take this course with him by all means. This is for your own good
This class was nothing like the description. lt's essentially 5 writing assignments that have nothing to do with social justice and are only focused on a specific sentence structure the professor tries to teach, and are marked harshly with feedback that makes no sense at all. I would never take a course with this instructor again.
This course's grade was determined entirely by five group assignments, which might seem straightforward, but Philip made it unnecessarily challenging. He provided little to no support, graded unreasonably harshly, and spoke in such a slow and monotonous way that staying focused during lectures was nearly impossible.
Run away Don't Don't take this class
Rude, boring, unfair and extremely harsh marker. You stand a better chance of improving your GPA by taking a physics course.
doesn't give anything above a b+ on anything no matter how perfect you are
Out of all the courses I have taken over my 4 years at York this is by far the most challenging course. I have had 4th year courses that are even easier. I do not reccommend this course at all.
This professor is genuinely one of the worst professors I've had. He does not give grades higher than 65 and it is all group projects. It's basically just 5-8 sentences that have barely anything to do with the actual course. If I read the reviews on rate my prof before taking the course, I would not have taken it. Don't take this course !
The feedback provided on assignments lacks any real substance, absolutely useless. Expecting anything above a 70% is unrealistic. Attempts to seek clarification or more constructive feedback via email have been met with unhelpful or rude responses. Avoid this man at all costs!
If you are considering taking this course because you think it's an easy way to get six credits, that is wrong. For this course, you have five short group writing assignments that one would think would be easy, but this man grades extremely hard. You would probably have better luck in any other gen ed course cause this one will just drop your GPA.
don't take this class. its almost like they dont want you to succeed you'll rarely see an 80, even if you ask TAs for help, nothing you do will be up to their standards. im an A + student, i kept up to date with the lessons & was luckily put with a very good group but its too risky to only have 5 assignments worth 20%. save yourself the stress
Lectures did not really clarify information – chapter/lecture sheets are read verbatim with some simple examples provided, but the content is easy to follow on your own. Assignment instructions are straightforward, but grading is very strict, so be prepared to write with very precise and intentional sentence structure and diction.
He grades very strictly and makes the course incredibly challenging. He does not provide a clear rubric or explain what he expects from students.
EXTREMELY TOUGH MARKER. DO NOT TAKE. Don't listen to anyone saying its "easy" or "average booster" DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE.
The lectures are boring, fortunately lecture notes are provided and it's easy to catch up on material. However, the biggest and worst problem is the grading. The prof's grading system is unfair and overly strict, and he purposely screws over your grade so you don't get over an 80%. Don't take this class.
