Good teacher

Not sure why he's in the teaching profession. He can be very sarcastic and it sounds mean-spirited, not a funny sarcasm. Comes across as down right nasty at times.
Yep, mean teacher who expects you remember EVERY little thing about math ever taught to you previous to his class.
He is very clear and exlains Pre-Calc very well. Yet he does seem to expect you to remember what you learned 5 quarters ago and if you dont he makes it sound as if you're dumb. But, as long as you pay attention- he's good.
Knows how to teach. Like with any math class as long as you practice it you will do fine. Just keep up with work cuz tests are usually very similiar to homework assignments. Recommended for anyone look to pursue math field.
Very solid teacher who teaches very well and is very well organized with his presentations and is also experienced. He expects you to work hard and learn the material. The grade you earn is the grade you earn, there is no wiggle room. Great instructor if you have to take more math.
he's a very good teacher who really cares about our grades

does not grade homework... explains math with clarity... Uses metaphors that really help you understand math... somewhat cynical when it comes to students not remembering material from prerequisites...The grade you get is the grade you deserve... I got a "D" in the class b/c I didn't do the homework, so undisciplined students beware, but highly recommend Mr. MacLean... Heck, he's in the commercials, so you know he is good.
Very helpful and understanding of not only the curriculum, but of the students as well. Highly recommended.
Family issues pulled me out of state for a few days and he was very difficult on me for this. School is life to him but if you work hard and don't ever miss class he's a good teacher.
MacLean is hardcore (aka intense). I did the homework three or four times a night, and left with an A. So, while it is possible to get an A in his class, it isn't easy. However, he is usually quite organized, clear, and precise. Don't take him just b/c he's on the commercials; that would make you stupid.
I had him for last quarter, However I got a D in the class. I am retaking the class, and have him again, I got a D because I did very little work, but this time around I've been doing the homework, and It's not too hard, and the tests are pretty much derived from the homework, so if you take MacLean, make sure you do the homework, should be smoot
very good teacher, very handsome as well
I took his class twice because his teaching sticks with you as you move on in lif. he is a masterpiece in teaching math and he takes pride in it. he encourage students to use any method that they wanted. However, if you want A grade, you need three cups of coffee to study all night. He gives hard questions and he expect perfected answers. Oh man!
A very helpful teacher, clear, concise, and yes, he knows when there are difficult questions that SHOULD be asked in the homework. If nobody asks anything remotely close, he knows nobody is doing it. Obviously, the tests and quizzes are derived from the homework, and often in the easy-middle ground of difficulty from those problems. Highly recommen
try this professor and you will not regret taking his class. i wish he can take math 151 class. remember, if you take his class, be prepared to study. as for course material, he knows it to his finger tips. this are his words " i take your silence to mean either you studied the home work and understood everthing or you did not studing at all"
Best teacher at CSCC
very good explainer.. has your best interest at heart
Probably the best math teacher I've ever had. Very clear, friendly, willing to help. However, his tests/quizzes are hard (easier if you do all the homework though). He expects a lot out of you, but he's very fair. And yes, he DOES give partial credit...whoever spread the rumor that he doesn't must have just really, really sucked on the tests.
Great teacher! Answers must be worded and written a specific way, but he makes you better.
This is by far the best math teacher at this school! This man knows math and he knows how to teach it so that you understand! He is extreamly fair on his grades, and if you put in the time and effort then you will be rewarded in learning math from one of GREATS!
This is by far the best math teacher at this school! This man knows math and he knows how to teach it so that you understand! He is extreamly fair on his grades, and if you put in the time and effort then you will be rewarded in learning math from one of GREATS!
very good instructor, i never missed a day and did 90% of the homework and the work i did not do was on the tests and exam. study and ask questions the man knows what he is talking about! and is very willing to help! gives partial credit on tests. the homework you do not understand will be on tests! so study that material over and over again!
Very smart and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend him or Ken Seidel for any Calc course.
He is helpful and is very clear. I recommend him.
Excellent communicator of concepts. Listens and answers questions. As a math major, I appreciated him. His class is challenging, but definitely possible to succeed.
AMAZING teacher! Highly reccommended! I wish I could have him for all my math classes. I had him for 151 and 152. I did all the homework and reviewed for each quiz and got A's both quarters. He's very clear and precise in his teaching. The tests are derived from homework problems, so do the homework! He cn also draw amazing perfect straight lines!
Very very hard! He starts with the hardest chapter( last chp in the book) first, my class had an average score of 60 on the first test!!The way he goes over the material can be hard to understand sometimes. He also based all of his tests off of the homework,so do the homework!
Very good communicator of concepts. Explains beginning calculus very well. highly recommended to anyone going into Engineering or other scientific majors. I only wish he would have a 152 class this quarter...
Test are very hard. I studied for hours during finals week. I got a 69.3 and needed a 70 to go on. Class average was below mine.
Great Instructor
Horrible!!! Do not take!!! Very tough grader!! Some people like him, I happen to be the one that does not. Kind of gets annoying.
I had to drop this class. I am taking it again next qtr. He is very knowledgable but he expects you to already understand most of it. If you catch on quick he should be good for ya. I dont like how he is sort of cocky and puts pressure on you. Good teacher but like I said, difficult. Work hard for your A.
Intellectual elitist of the worst sort. Teaches like 5th grade math, gives nothing but forms with no underlying concept. Takes points of for intermediate step errors even when you fix them before the final answer. Welcomes questions on proccess, gets very upset if you question that math itself. Almost worthless as a teacher, avoid like the plague!
I don't know what everyone is talking about. Most impressive math teacher I've ever had. Perfectly organized. He can clarify any question you may have. I can't say that about any other math prof at CSCC. People complaining about him being condescending are too sensitive. He's brilliant.
Awesome teacher. Does an excellent job leading you through the class, and presents everything clearly. Answers questions well, too. You DO need to do the work.
He is horrible. He was in the military and starts class and ends class on the exact minute. He is very weird!!
Gives you a sheet at the beginning of the class listing suggested homework problems for each chapter, which I LOVE because some chapters I do every odd-number problem, some I only want to do enough to practice. Also, he's a very tough grader. Doesn't matter if your final answer is right, he wants to see WORK. Test your critical numbers!
Excellent Professor. He is extremely organized. His lectures are very clear and thorough. When he is lecturing he goes through problems step by step explaining WHAT he is doing and WHY he is doing it. Writes everything on the board (doesn't skip steps or just say them out loud) no matter how basic. Probably the best math teacher I have had so far.
He was not my type of teacher he seemed to not care about you and is very stuck up. i did like the lectures he posted on the internet, but i stil just couldnt get why he would put the extreamly difficult problems on the homework and tests, i never really got to do an easy one to get started. i was not a fan of his teaching method!!!
Phil is super nice but just too difficult. he teaches like a textbook which is thorough but it is frustrating when you leave class frustrated and confused. I felt like i could never get ahead in his class it was impossible. Honestly if math isn't your natural ability find a different teacher.
Degrading, belittling and not interested in helping students learn. Would not answer any question if he thought we should know them.
Honestly, Professor MacLean has been my favorite teacher in college. Maybe some think he is tough because he holds the students accountable and challenges people do their best, but I think his teaching styling is awesome. He is very interactive with the class. If you aren't lazy and want to learn math, he's your guy!
Easily one of the best instructors I've ever had. I never left his class wondering about the material covered. He is extremely thorough in his lectures. He is a firm but fair instructor. I recommend him to anyone especially those who struggle with math.
great teacher but sometimes rushes class. doesnt answer all of questions directly. but very helpful during offices hours. he teachers and prepares you for his test. if you do your part you should have no problem. very strict when it comes to rules, cell phones, and tardiness. let class vote on when to take take before or after lecture.A++++
Maclean was a great teacher. He was very organized, and his lectures were helpful. He always made sure everyone understood the material. He never put anything surprising on the tests. If you go to class and do the optional homework for good practice you should be fine.
Waste of time and money! All he does is go over proofs. Tests are nothing like homework or probs from the book. Expects you to write out and explain the formulas used or gives no credit. Class avg on first test was 50% and he said, "that's what I look for on my tests." over 50% of the class dropped in 4wks, and lectures are a snooze fest! Stay Away
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. I fell that maybe if I had taken calculus before I would have understood the class better, but the information he gave me was just not enough for his tests and quizzes. He is a nice person and if you go for help to his office he will happily help you... Still I would not take him again...
He is one of the best math teachers I've ever had. He is very well-organized and very helpful. He knows what exactly the math is related with life and where exactly people are gonnause that. I always recommend him if u really want to learn.
Phil is a very clear teacher. He is extremely interested in how well students are doing on the homework to help you along. Also, he explicitly tells his class on what concepts they should prior understand for his class (doesn't assume you remember math from 2+ years ago). Great professor.
Professor MacLean was a great teacher for Math 116/Math for Liberal Arts. It is a very different course from algebra with very different thinking. Some of the concepts are harder, but he gives great, extremely clear lectures with notes. Answers questions without making you feel stupid. Available for office hours. Really recommend for Math 116
Best Math teacher I have ever had! He is so patient and very easy to approach with questions. BEST part- he types out ALL notes and gives you a packet of notes and examples at beginning of class! So you dont have to even write your own notes the entire time! The note packets are great study tool for final too! DEFINITELY RECCOMEND HIM FOR MATH 116!
Great professor. I took two classes with him and I would take one more. He is really good and helpful. I understand everything. Provides 30 mins before each test to ask questions.
He is a tough grader, but he explains everything well. He gives you easy-to-understand notes for all chapters. Although he is tough grader, it will better prepare you for future courses. He was accessible whenever I need him to help with homework or review.
Very arrogant and makes you feel stupid if you don't understand concepts. He often say's it's "child play." I have never gotten below a C in any college course and I failed this class. His "study guides" are worthless and tests are nothing like the HW. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Nice guy in person, but not a great teacher. If you don't understand something, he explains it again but only in the same way. He doesn't teach to your needs. And tests and homeworks are not similar at all. He says the book isn't mandatory, which is nice, but unless you have it, you will struggle in the class.
Answers email quickly. Doesn't give packets of notes anymore. Leaves out Algebra steps of problem and won't tell you how to solve that part of it. Gives 60 math problems due day of test. Puts problems on tests and quizzes that are unlike homework and study guide. Most of the class had trouble with homework and tests. Take home quiz was hard.
I had Phil in SP14 and I'm warning you to stay away like the plague. Online hw is really time consuming for only 3 pts. He's not the easiest grader, he'll easily take off points for the simplest mistake. Lots of quizzes. Not to mention his final seem nothing similar to our exams. If you have the opportunity to get another professor, do it.
Can be snarky when someone doesn't understand a topic& then give you a blank stare. His test qs. are typically based off "lets think out of the box" so if you're not that type of thinker, switch. He's not a fan of extra credit, so don't expect much from him. OSU math 1149 exams are a complete joke compared to his exams, don't say I didn't warn you.
I had him for MATH 1030 - typically a beginner course. His teaching style catered to me because in every new concept, he explained how it was practical in real world terms, which made it easier to understand. He does expect alot from his students, but he is a very clear, VERY helpful teacher if you need help. It can be tough, but it's worth it.
Go to class and pay attention, ask questions if you don't understand he is amazing at explaining things and gives great examples!
I took Phil's 1151 class my first semester of college. He is an outstanding professor. Intelligent, helpful, and really cares about his students. I worked hard for a C in his class, but am not a great math student. Simply stated; Phil is the man, any serious student should take math with him.
He is great. hands down.
Really cares about his students and really wants them to succeed. However, the class is insanely difficult and it's worth 6 credit hours. Mr. Maclean is the best at his job, when it comes to lecturing. He is a positive individual and gives real life examples. He turns a boring subject into an interesting subject. He is an extremely hard grader
Best, most understandable math teacher/professor I think I've ever had. Really starts from the ground-up as far as math goes, builds on simple concepts and answers questions clearly. Tough class, though - takes effort, but he is there for all the help one could need.
He knows what he's teaching and whatever level you are at, he will teach you in most simple terms. He Passes out lecture notes and posts them online, He grades what you deserve and it's nice to be in class. Can not stress how helpful he is, multiple office hours to walk in for any questions .Happy to help from the heart. Take it. Enjoy it!
Class was difficult to begin with as 2 courses in one semester, and he did not hand out grades. But he was extremely helpful and made sure you understood what was going on. He gave some credit on tests just for trying. even if it was just a point or two, if you wrote something down, he would probably give you something. excellent professor.
MacLean is an extremely effectual teacher. If you show up and pay attention you will have complete understanding of your subject matter. That being said you will be expected to demonstrate that understanding. Awesome dude. Take his class,
Great teacher!!!!! He cares about all of his students and wants to see them do their best. He is super super friendly and doesnt take bull at the same time. He is everything you want in a teacher. GIVE THIS DUDE A RAISE!!!
Tough professor dont be fooled
Mr. Maclean is a good professor, he is caring and he will answer everyone's question patiently, I learned a lot from his class. I would take my other two math classes With him if I could.
He is so horrible professor. he is so fast when he teach. I took his class in fall 16 , but felt like i was taking summer class. his tests and quizzes are very difficult and not similar to homework or lectures . very tough grader, you won't get any credit for trying in the test unless u got the real solution. makes joke of students with low results
Phil is an excellent professor. Be prepared to work hard in and out of class. If you keep up with the online homework, and study before any quiz/test, you will pass! The class is easy at first, then the middle martial is though, if you can grit your teeth and get through week 10 you will make it! Also, KNOW HOW TO WORK WITH FRACTIONS!! :)
Took this class over a compressed summer course, which added to the challenge. But the way Maclean has the course structured and the way he teaches the material makes it very possible for even the math-challenged to get their heads around the material. He provides and incentivizes the use of all the tools necessary to pass, but doesn't hand it out.
Great teacher. Makes the subject easy to understand. Teaches the hardest stuff first, then it gets easier as the semester goes on. Do your homework; daily points ("pop quizzes) can come from the "optional" homework (you copy onto the quiz paper directly from your finished homework).
I'm upset that it's taken me 13 years of schooling to find a math teacher that I like. This guy is awesome. I would take another class with him in a heartbeat. Only rough part is that he has 2 point activities each class which I always super easy but if you miss a class you can't make it up (so attendance isn't MANDATORY but it's complicated.
Great Professor! Good at making math simpler than it is. Also really good at responding to emails and giving good feedback. I would take him any day if I had a chance!
NEVER HAVE I EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS CLASS! the professor is so rude!! The class moves so quickly and there were so many tests/quizzes that I felt like I couldn't breathe. We had hw twice every week with each hw section having 30 questions for 3 points only. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS!
Ehhh. No paper reviews before tests or quizzes. Doesn't really go over the formulas and stuff properly. He's a good man at heart, very caring, and a nice guy, but I'm not a fan of his teaching. Quizzes every week. The smart kid in the class shouts out the answer so he just writes it down but doesn't show how he got it.
Best professor I ever had! Would take him again if I had the chance. You must spend several hours a week outside class though.
I took this class after already taking calc one at a different university. Hard is an understatement. I took a summer course and our class average on tests never got about 65%. No curves or anything like that.
Professor Maclean was one of the best teachers I've had. He is great at answering questions if material is unclear or confusing. He does expect his students to act like adults and pay attention and is much more eager to help students who help themselves. If you do the homework and participate in class, you should have no problem passing his class.
He was literally one of the best math professors I've had! He has such good lectures and gives lots of homework that helps you for the quizzes and tests. Would definitely take his class again!
workload was AWFUL 1-2 homework sets due before each class, a set could contain up to 30questions and each hw was worth 3pts. there were so many quizzes it was suffocating. his exam "review" sheets were worthless, so much that i could've written it myself. he was really condescending as well. i regret not dropping this class while i had the chance.
I do like the way he lectures by not using a power point. Is willing to take office time for students who have questions. The online homework is very time consuming. Was a little annoyed when he wouldn't let me make up a quiz I missed due to having surgery. Just made it the quiz he would take off which he does for everyone at the end.
My first college math class I have ever took. Come to class and pay attention, do the homework and notes should prepare you enough for the course. He is very understanding with situations that might come up in your left, just talk to him before hand and he will get it worked out for you.
Beware of this professor's teaching style, one must be very prepared for whatever course he is teaching. He also tends to be nitpicky about the student's answers on the exams. He is not approachable by email and sometimes thinks too highly of himself. So, be prepared for hard homework, a lot of quizzes, and some exams with no study guide.
I now understand why some people think Calc 1 is hard because there is a lot to memorize but the material itself is not difficult at all. This class however was flawed because 660/775 points were from tests/quizzes so the HW's and discussion boards cannot save your grade if you bomb a test. He answers questions beautifully. Great Prof!
I took this class and was confident it would be okay. WRONG! He is a tough grader and the discussion boards are worth the same about of points for the 90 questions of homework!(only 3points!) Very test and quiz heavy so I recommend not taking it with him if you struggle with tests and such. Very nice notes but some questions on tests are not found.
This class was not an easy class but the materials of the class were very helpful. If you practice well then it is an easy A. Don't skip the HW as it is very important to check that you understand the material. Don't use the cheating sites like Chegg as he is going to check if anyone has copied.
Extremely rude with students. We get homework assignments that are worth max 3 points for 30-60 questions and you must get above 90% on hw to get those 3 points. Likes to blame EVERYONE on cheating every quiz and writes up students just on speculation. Is not willing to help during office hours, will just tell you how bad youre doing.
Extremely tough grader. Is rude and reliant on quizzes every week. Good luck getting help on anything.
This professor isnt good. He will assign 30 hw questions for 3 pts and you must get 90% of those hw qs right before you get the 3 pts. He likes saying people cheat on quizzes and will write them up on speculation. Also found out how much of a picky grader he is. Dont take him unless your major is engineering or math. Hes unnecessarily hard.
I used to be pretty ok at algebra, but taking this so far has made me think I am the worst. He grades SUPER hard and it's nit-picky about EVERYTHING so you could lose all points even if you did work correctly. Quizzes every week and the study guides are the most useless.
He is such a petty point taker, he likes to sit there each class and say people are cheating. You can still get an answer completely right and he will take points because he cant read your handwriting. Dont take him unless you are a math or engineering major as it seems he likes those majors better, and will be more willing to work with them.
You will have a lot of homework and quizzes to do, the professor is a tough grader I felt so bad, I will be solving all my problems and showing all my work and I still lose points just because. He is also very rude when you ask him or send him an email. This class was horrible to me, he made me cry so many times feeling unfair about his grades
Maclean was a great professor. He is fast at responding outside of class and easy to access before class. There is a lot of homework and quizzes, but I think that is true for all professors teaching this section.
I missed the 1st week of class due to military service (which we communicated about outside of school). The 1st day that I was back he gave me a quiz. I failed. I went to all of his office hours to work things out. He said it isn't that hard and that I should understand it. Got a D on the next quiz and dropped the class.
Do not take this professor! Very intimidating and makes petty remarks. He calls you out during class, makes you feel dumb for asking questions. Went to office hours and he was no help. Lots of homework, only worth 3 points which does nothing to improve your grade. Very tough grader and will take away points for small mistakes on tests and quizzes.
WORST TEACHER I EVER HAD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. AVOID AT ANY COST. STAY AWAY. WORST DECISION IN MY LIFE TO TAKE THIS CLASS. PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE
He is very nice and helps when needed. He will help you see your mistakes and see how to improve for next time. if i could take him for calculus I would. #macleanrules
Professor MacLin is my least favorite professor I've had. It was very difficult for me to learn and succeed academically in his class. He gave homework that was extremely difficult and had nothing to do with what we were learning. The tests often would have equations that we didn't have the skills to solve. I would not take his class if I were you.
Professor MacLean is the worst professors I've had. This class was very difficult succeed in. The tests & HW weren't over things covered in class. The HW took me +7 hours a week. He's a harsh grader with an unfair grading system. He was intimidating and moved too fast for the class to follow. I would STRONGLY advise against taking this class.
Grades super heavy, the things you see on the test you never did before , stay away
My best advice is to stay away from him. He makes the course extremely difficult. He runs through the material soo fast, it's unbearable. His homeworks are really long. With barely enough points. Better off not do them, becuase you can barely get the same questions on the tests or quizes. An absolute GPA killer. Stay away!!!!
The worst professor I had. If you care about your own mental health I wouldn't recommend taking one of his classes.
Homework due every class, nothing too crazy. The lectures he had were very easy to follow and were inviting to participate in.
Basically as close as you can get to the ideal professor, very good at explaining during lectures, tests cover what he goes through in class, if you just sit there for 2 hours and pay attention you'll pass the tests. Each homework assignment takes about 1-2 hours to complete and there are 2 per week, so make sure you make time to complete them.
An amazing professor, and I would recommend him to anyone who likes traditional professors.
He's definitely a tough grader, but if you take them time to email him or meet during office hours he is very helpful explaining mistakes and what you can do differently. Lectures cover a lot of material and go by very fast, but that's because it's calculus and not anything to do with him
He is very good at his Job and does not mind anything else.
Loved this Professor as a person individually. Very hard on the class for not understanding and was harsh about it. Went to multiple office hours, tutoring, support, spent hours studying and still couldn't understand. Homework system is horrible. Uses Aleks, which is horrid, and tests worth 60 percent of overall grade. Nice guy, but save the stress
Professor MacLean is a very good professor. If you like traditional teaching, I would recommend taking him. There are 3 tests and a final. There are also 6 quizzes, but only your top 5 scores count (he drops the lowest).
