This guys a joke, NKU needs to fire him. He never talked about math and when he did, he was uniterested, boring, and didn't explain the information. I'm generally smart in math and still thought this class was hard. Yeah, he gives homework, which isn't hard, but he'll bore you to death and is very unclear.

i cannot stand this guy. why the hell does he recieve a paycheck for what he sees as "teaching". he is a complete idiot and his class never made any sense to me. he was a jerk and acted like i was stupid if i didn't understand something he was teaching. NKU will lose students because of this guy

You'll wish that somebody was driving a set of screw drivers into the back of your skull! If you have him drop the course, it is not worth the agonizing pain you'll sit through...I cannot tell you the number of times I would rather have listened to nails scraping down a chalk board!

Previous comments referring to screws in the skull being preferable to this prof are fairly accurate. You will do well if you are already knowledgeable in math. If you go in with limited skills, don't expect to gain more from this prof. Textbook sucks. Good luck.

he was the worst teacher i think i have ever had..all he talks about is stupid stuff that has nothing to do with math. he expects you to learn the material on your own. i even dropped the class since he was so bad. do not take him!!

horrible. he would teach you how to do a problem a way that didnt make sense. then you go home try to do the homework, and the the proble. but on test if you do it like the book does and not the way he does its wrong. Horrible teacher. He knows the material, just had no clue how to teach.

McCartney's knowledge pertaining to mathmatics is undeniable. However, you must show up to his lectures with somewhat of an understanding of the topic [read the chapters before they're explained!] NKU is lucky to have such an intelligent professor

Terrible teacher. Boring, can't explain things well, I had to teach myself EVERYTHING, teaches everything different than the textbook teaches it and doesn't use blackboard at all. Tests are terrible. He is a nice guy but he can't teach. Do not take.

The worst teacher I have ever had. I loved Calculus before he stomped all over it. He would write down the Calculus as if it was common knowledge and spend the ENTIRE rest of the class on Algebra simplification. I learned nothing from him. Had to teach myself. Tests were ridiculously difficult. Now have to retake the class.

This class is the worst I have taken at NKU. Not only does the professor not even grade the homework, but the whole grade is almost nothing but quizzes and tests (and one project). The one thing nice thing I can say about him is that he clearly knows his stuff. But thats the problem. He can't convey it to his students. Do NOT take him.

Horrible Teacher. Doesn't explain well, and is awful at trying to help put. I stopped by his office 4 times (with him knowing I was going to stop) and he was there only once.

Terrible teacher, only grades come from tests and quizzes. No one in the class was able to understand his method of lecturing. He clearly knows the subject well, but isn't clear about explaining it. There was no use for the text book, besides practice problems. Over half the class dropped the class, beware.

This professor was the worst that I had last semester. The class started with about 30 kids, I withdrew, but from what I heard, only about 8 finished the course. He only grades quizzes and tests, which is understandable, but he grades more minutely than a grammar Nazi in English class. I do not recommend him at all.

Absolutely terrible. I have gotten an A in every other math class I've taken easily. I have taken precal in high school and passed with an A yet managed to fail the exams with tutoring. He gives 2 question quizzes and grades hard!! So missing one means failing. He doesn't take homework grades and doesn't give notes. DO NOT TAKE.

Avoid him at all costs. He is extremely difficult. His class went from being full to practically empty after the first exam. He makes an already hard class a million times harder than it should be. Even if you do know the material, there is no way to finish his tests within the time allotted.

Extremely smart man but can not teach at all. You can take all the notes you want and do every homework assignment and if you are still questionable on any topic, you're screwed because he sure can't explain it in English at all. The only grades in this class are the 3 tests and final exam with about 10 quizzes.

Worst professor I have ever had. Calc 2 is an extremely difficult course, and a 5 hour course is a lot of work. This guy makes it nigh impossible to pass. He doesn't teach. AT ALL. He expects you to read the book and teach yourself, and gives tons of homework, which he doesn't collect, so you get no feedback. Avoid this guy at all costs.

Terrible teacher. Doesn't explain well, then takes off points for signs. All universities should require that Blackboard be used for at least syllabus and grades. He doesn't use it at all, so you never know your grade. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PROFESSOR. Over half class dropped, and the rest averaged about a 68. Can't pass with him no matter what.

This guy is awful, he will ramble all class about nothing to do with a problem. He takes an hour and 15 minutes for a topic that can be discussed in 10 minutes. And if you try to ask a question in class he will not answer it, but rather go off about some story from his past that has no correlation with the problem. Do not take this professor ever.

DO NOT TAKE HIM. The worst professor I have ever taken. Very intelligent, can't express the concepts. Found out after the class he had been banned from teaching this class for a year.

Here's the tea sis, I had to drop because this professor was not very good at explaining things and you can try and go to tutoring but for me it was an everyday thing. I was so overwhelmed with the low grade I had that I had to drop and re take it next semester. I would avoid.

Learned more from Youtube than this proffesor. This guy will take the simplest thing and turn into something extremely complex. He is one of the math teachers that knows math but cant teach it.

McCartney is the worst Professor I have ever had. Im an A-B student and failing this class, he teaches the opposite of the textbook half of the time so you cant use that for help, homework is all optional so you dont get grades for that, and he grades his quizzes/tests so harshly by taking off points for the littlest things. One of the worst professors I have taken. I learned more from Youtube than any of his lectures. The textbook is very poorly setup. Grades very harshly and takes off for anything. I was forced to drop this class. I would not recommend him to anyone

I took Calc. AB and got a 4 on the ap exam and even then he would do things in a more difficult way. You only get 5 grades in the semester 3 exams one final and you're added up quiz. so you better do good on all the exams. Also, have fun when your class goes from 33 to 10 students cause everyone drops it

Youtube will be your bestfriend for this class. He will not go over topics that the whole class struggles with. He will not tell you what the homework problems are. Instead, you must flip through the textbook looking for problems that correlate to what you are working on in class. Much more i could say but not enough space . DON'T TAKE THIS PROF.!!

Im an A-B student and this is the first math class Ive ever struggled in. Grades very harshly, doesnt explain very well. By mid semester half the class dropped. Your final grade grade will only consist of quizzes, 3 test, and the final. Had to use YouTube and read the book to learn the concepts. Overall very exam based and not good at explaining

I have never struggled in math, I have always ranked top of my classes. This professor, however, was not helpful at all. He never explains where he is at in the textbook, consistently tells random stories, and does not find different ways to explain the material. Exams are the only things graded(4 exams). Doesn't tell you what you did wrong.

Since COVID, this class was online and this teacher doesn't know anything about technology. If this class where in person I think it would be easier to understand what he wants from us. His lectures become tedious and boring not keeping class engaged and very easy to doze off.

Terrible. No other teacher has given me so much grief and trouble than this one. Class average was a 45% on a good day. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR

I have always enjoyed math, but professor McCartney made it horrible. I wish I would have changed classes from the beginning to not go thought this. I ended up having to drop the class because I had a really bad grade.

Horrible at teaching. Terrible with technology. Made life harder than it needed to be.

I'm currently in this class and if I could rate him a number lower than zero I would. Save yourselves and avoid taking him for this class. For one, the assignments don't have anything to do with the quizzes and tests. Two, he doesn't know how to use technology and being everything is online, it makes it harder. The list could honestly go on.

Horrible professor I have no idea how this can be tolerated, he literally does not explain questions very well that are asked by other class members. He has no idea how to use technology. The worst part is his quizzes have nothing to do with the homework!!!! Avoid this class like the plague.

He does not do a good job teaching the material. I would attend each class and ask questions, but still have to do hours of research outside of class to understand what he was trying to teach. He is old, and has a hard time understanding how to use any software. If you have him online, it sounds like he is falling asleep while trying to teach.

due to covid this class was taken online. he did not seem to tweak his quizzes at all for online. He could care less if your lock down browser froze or if it takes you longer than 5 minutes to update the pdf of the quiz because of phone problems you get a 0 either way. When you try to reason he tells you to contact helpdesk and you get a 0. AVOID!

He is the worst professor. I was in his online class and he spent the entire class period with his camera off writing out problems that are already given in the book. His canvas is not set up to calculate final grades you may think youre going to pass the class based on your grade in canvas but he goes back and does his own calculations.

His classes are basically just him going over homework, so you have to read the material outside of class if you don't understand.

His class is just him giving you homework and test/quizzes that are not like the homework. He only cares about getting paid, and not his students.

Don't be like me and read these ratings and still think you'll still be okay. Worst semester ever. The tests are completely different from the problems you work on in the book and in class. It's a miracle that this guy still has a job. The last math professor I had was a million times better. He doesn't know how to teach and he doesn't care either.

DO NOT TAKE!! I wish I could give 0/5 for him. He teaches only off of homework questions, no real lecture. You teach yourself 100%. His exams are much harder than the homework or examples you see in the book. Unless you are a math wiz, his class will only hurt your GPA.

Had As in Algebra 1&2, Geometry, and PreCalc in high school, placed into the class by test over the summer and BUCKLE UP if you have him. Doesn't teach the material in class and wants you to read hours and hours of the ebook outside of class. You teach yourself everything. Seriously don't know how he has a teaching license. Don't take, drop ASAP!!!

Has to be the worst math teacher I've ever had, you literally teach yourself everything while he "goes over homework problems." We don't learn anything other than to read the book. You can ONLY do if his way or it's the highway, if you can test out of this class or drop his class then definitely do so. Terrible experience.

I have never had to withdrawal from a class before & I had to withdrawal from his class bc I would not have passed. You have to purchase an online textbook with assignments attached. He has you do the online assignments for hw but then gives quizzes & exams that are NOTHING like the homework. He rambles the entire lecture. DO NOT take his class.

Doesn't teach the concepts and spends all the class time only solving problems.

Don't take this class. He takes points off for the tiniest of details on quiz, doesn't do retakes or extra credit. Only posts homework grades, not test grades, so no clue what actual grades are till they're permanent. If you have to take his class, take notes and go to tutoring, and don't miss any classes. He will tank your GPA. Avoid taking him.

Do not take his class. He spends the entire class rambling and does not explain how he solves the problems or effective methods to solve them. He grades very harshly and does not put in exam or quiz grades so you have no clue what you have in the class. He does post notes but they are extremely unorganized and difficult to follow along with.

The dude is just straight bad at teaching, the entire class got a 50 or less on an exam worth like 30%, his lectures are hard to follow and have zero energy. worst of all is that he teaches in a way that isn't taught anywhere else so you can't even go to Youtube for help because you get points off if you don't do it his way

Do not take this class. Lectures are 100% of class time and are very boring. Professor does not teach what is on the test. This professor made me lose my interest in math. If you are reading this drop the class, for your own sanity and your GPA.

One of the worst professors I have ever had. Please do not take any of his courses. He will not teach how to actually do the problems, rather he just writes out the solutions and expects us to know how to do it. Why am I paying $500 for this class if I have to just teach myself from YouTube...

First time I've had to drop a class. This professor makes attendance mandatory only to teach nothing throughout the lectures. Had to go home and watch a guy on YouTube teach the material to me because this professor couldn't. Most of the classes consisted of him solving a problem without breaking it down to explain what he did.

Homework is worth nothing grade wise what is taught in class is not what is on the quiz, you will be teaching yourself if you take this course

Absolutely horrible. I had no clue on what was going on and resorted to dropping. He truly needs to be fired however he has tenure. I ended up retaking the class with Michael Waters and did much better.
