He understands that the majority of the class is not a science major and he tries to make it as interesting and understandable as possible. He's really cool and laid back.
Dr. Murray was super helpful and grades you based on how hard you try! Sometimes my lab partner and I wouldn't get everything right but we stayed the majority of lab and asked a lot of questions and he gave us both 'A's
Dr. Murray likes to go on about some useless chemistry stuff. The class was pretty boring but it was easy. The only thing that got me through the class was his ridiculously hot body. He has the face of a troll but he looks so good in those colorful pollo shirts.
He was not helpful, exams were extremely difficult and he never gave study guides. class is always rushed and not informing. I worked my butt off the entire semester trying to teach myself. absolute terrible experience. I am by no means a bad student and chances are that i will have to retake this class because of his horrible teaching.
soooo hot
Murray is great. This semester he went out of his way by writing everything on the board instead of using PowerPoint just to make it easier for his students to understand.
Took him over the summer and he's still great with lectures, explanations, and keeping your attention. Takes the powerpoints and "dumbs" them down to make more understandable to an average student. He's always willing to help and adjust the class to make it better for his students. Loved him and wish I could take him again!
Dr Murray is kinda an ass. He does not the material very well and does problems straight from the textbook. His lectures are also all over the place. Your better off ditching class to go the library to read the textbook and study rather watching him sway back in forth in front of the class
Dr. Murray is a very good professor. He explains things really well and his tests are relatively easy if you put in the effort. He is very helpful with his office hours. He doesn't really assign textbook problems. Best way to do well on his exams are to do the end of chapter problems in the textbook and to show up to class.
Not the best teacher but he goes through everything step by step and he's super chill
He makes Chemistry as interesting as he can. Very good teacher, will explain things throughly. If you don't understand he is always there to help, and doesn't mind someone asking questions throughout the lecture. He encourages it. You can make A's on the exams but only if you actually study and do the HW that's assigned.
Dr. Murray is a really good professor. He teaches in a very laid back style and uses the whiteboard rather than powerpoint, which is awesome. He doesn't take attendance, but you probably want to show up. His tests are hard and he doesn't give out any study guides, just tells you to review the homework. He is a very fair grader though. I'd take him.
Don't expect to get much help from this professor. "Do I really need work this problem out?" is his favorite line during "exam reviews." He leaves a lot of information out when he teaches that you need to know for he's ridiculously long homework assignments. So ULTIMATELY I wouldn't take him again.
He gives you a lot of homework, but here here's the thing.... DO IT! His tests are hard, but not impossible. If you do the homework it boosts your grade in the end and helps A LOT. He's really helpful so go to the lectures.
He's a cool guy and makes chemistry interesting, his tests are tough but if you pay attention in class then it's not so bad. I would definitely take him again, he's great at teaching!
Dr. Murray is really a very good professor. He is always available to help students and answer their questions. Pay proper attention in class and you can get a good grade.
Class just kind of droned on and on. It was very boring and I wasn't interested at all whatsoever. He seemed like a nice guy though.
Dr. Murray is by far one of my favorite professors at UT. He is a super nice guy and his lectures are great because he does a ton of examples until you understand. There is quite a bit of homework but it is all participation and he goes over it in class which is helpful. His tests aren't bad and he drops your lowest grade which is great.
His lectures go on and on. He leaves out some information that you need to go back into the textbook to find. Seems like a good guy but not my type of professor
You'd be better off teaching yourself. Not to mention no extra credit. Quizzes and tests make up your entire grade. I love chemistry, I'm switching my major to chemistry but it's definitely not because of this professor. If my only experience in chemistry was this class, I'd hate it. For the love of med school, don't do it.
He's a nice guy! Just don't take his class. Only gives 2 of his own exams and the ACS final so if you do poorly on one you might not be able to fix it. The actual material is not bad. Other than that he teaches pretty alright but his grading was a deal breaker for me. I wouldn't recommend him for lecture but I hear he's great for lab.
I get the vibe that he enjoys making people feel stupid. He takes off more points for significant figures than any professor I have ever encountered. He seems miserable 24/7 and just looks for ways to screw over your grade.
Dr. Murray was a decent lab professor. He explained things well and made sure you knew his expectations. He always wanted his students to be prepared, so if you weren't you were automatically on his bad side. Gives pre-lab quiz before each lab, but were super easy and straight forward. Not a bad teacher, but somewhat of a tough grader. Good overall
So I had the worst experience with this professor. He is actually so mean and the attitude he brings into class is just horrible. It's a pretty basic class, not hard nor easy, but just the way that he handled stuff was horrible. Be ready for pop quizzes after he finishes a chapter. Only 3 tests(one being the final) and the quizzes. Don't take him.
I recommend to not take Dr. Murray for lab. I'm not sure how he is in lecture, but lab is the worst. Each lab has a pop quiz of 4/5 questions that are extremely random. He reads them aloud and only gives us a min to do the whole pop quiz. He takes a lot points off of tiny mistakes. I have a better grade in lecture, and lab should be an easy A.
Dr. Murray is incredible and so nice! Read the chapter before going into lecture, listen to his lecture and feel free to ask him any questions if you are confused. Dr. Murray wants his students to succeed. He has a quiz after every chapter, but drops the 2 lowest quiz grades, focus on the math, practice the problems and do the online homework.
Murray is a no-nonsense professor. He grades hard, but he prepares you well enough to match his expectations. His class is set up so he lectures for 2-3 days, and then you have a short quiz on the next day. He only gives 2 exams, so these regular quizzes kept my mind fresh and were excellent study guides.
He is the best chemistry professor that I have had. I barley passed chemistry 1 last semester but this semester I actually understand everything. His lectures are very organized and thorough. After every chapter we have a quiz which I love because it makes you need to understand each chapter before moving onto the next.
Hes great in lecture, but a nightmare in lab. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR LAB. Takes a lot of points off for small mistakes in lab, almost impossible to get a good grade. Chem 2 lab is easy to pass with an A with any other teacher
Class starts with a quiz about the prelab of the new lab, a quick lecture, then the new lab itself. The lecture is helpful. Murray is pretty chill and funny in class. He grades pretty hard. The labs are easy and quick, but the post-labs and calculations can get overwhelming. He is a pretty good professor.
DO NOT TAKE FOR LAB! RUNNNNNNN! He seems to completely hate his life and wants you to hate yours, too. He grades extremely harshly (it actually seems a bit unfair). I've never had a professor give a 70 just for sig figs on a few problems. There are pre-lab quizzes which is fine, however his are extremely random..
Not helpful unless he likes you. He is rude and will take off major points for stupid little mistakes. He has this major "I'm better than you" attitude and likes to make you feel stupid.
Ive never had a teacher be so hostile towards students. He avoids helping students, and has even laughed at some questions asked. He is the reason so many students are afraid to ask questions. Email correspondence with him has been impossible, and when possible is futile. Love the material, hate the professor.
Great professor. He lectures for 1-2 days per chapter and then gives you a quiz on that chapter. These quizzes were helpful because he made sure you understood the material before moving onto the next chapter. There are 3 exams (2 exams plus final exam) that in total make up 75% of your grade, so you need to study. He is easy if you pay attention.
Dr. Murray is by far the worst professor at Tampa. If you ask a question, not only does he make you feel stupid, but he makes you 10x more confused. If you question why you have points taken off, instead of clarifying, his face will get red and he will basically tell you "it is what it is". On top of this all, he does not give partial credit.
I had Dr. Murray for Chem 1 and 2 and he is a great professor. He explains the material well and always emphasizes the important concepts in each chapter. However, if you are unwilling to put in the time to study, you won't do well in this class. The majority of this course is based on 3 exams and a quiz after each chapter.
Totally delusional about summer class expectations. Expects us to learn 2 full chapters within 4 days & take an exam on the 5th. Class average for exams was so low and he basically was like work harder, on top of that no curve. Gives off a figure it out on your own type deal which is frustrating because its all online due to covid19. RIP gpa
Jeez, dude is making me want to change my major the first semester. Were in hybrid classes, and you cant see the board when on zoom. When we ask him about it he basically just says tough luck and moves on. Quizzes every almost twice a week on stuff he doesnt teach. Grades hard. If youre even slightly off with sig figs you get a zero. Withdraw
I hate this man. He teaches nothing and blames you if you have issues. I had covid and he refused to send me the zoom links anD lecture notes I missed. He gives you 0's on quizzes even if you have the right answer if your sig fig isnt perfect. He isn't easy to reach and when you reach out for help he says try harder. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
He wasn't flexible at all and every quiz and exam seemed to have topics or problems that we'd never gone over or were impossible.
I hate this man with everything I have. Never take his course. He is so rude and does not respect his students. I hope he gets fired.
This man does not care about his students. He is only there to get paid. I am contemplating emailing the school and putting in a formal complaint. If he even thinks you're cheating you will get an academic integrity violation. It does not matter if you were not. NEVER take this class. If you get put in it drop it.
Orgo Lab with Dr. Murray is the standard lab class. You are graded by prelab quizzes, an informal lab report every week, 1-2 formal lab reports, and a final exam. He is very laid back in lab and grades the informal labs pretty easily. The final exam wasn't too bad and it was open notes. He is not as bad as people make him out to be.
I was a bit confused about why he has such high ratings and then I realized that he has two accounts on here. If you would like to see more ratings look up "phillip murray" his rating is more appropriate there. Don't take him unless your goal is to make your GPA drop. He's a strict grader. Rather disrespectful when it comes to answering questions.
If I could rate Phil 0/5 I would. Honestly such a mean guy. Very hostile towards his students. He also believes covid is fake.... Do your mental health a favor and DO NOT TAKE PHILLIP MURRAYS CLASS.
Terrible, terrible, terrible. If you get placed in his class, I truly feel for you. Withdraw, switch, do whatever you can for your sanity. The worse professor ever at UT.
His ratings are honestly so inaccurate. His class is very straightforward, do what he says and how he says to do it and you'll get an easy A. He does a good job in lecture and is a pretty funny guy. Just do whats expected, like show up to class do your homework and read the lab manual before class and you'll get a very easy A.
Avoid him at all costs!! I was in the hospital and have numerous doctor notes... doesn't matter to him. He is truly mean and if you ask for help, he will be rude about it & not help. I feel sorry for anyone who has him! I took chem lab and got an A, had to retake it because I am a transfer student, got an F with him! He is the worst
I don't understand all the bad ratings on here, he is actually a really great professor and a great guy. If you need help, he is super easy to talk to and helpful. His lectures are really straight forward and he tells you what you need to know and don't know. Chem in general is hard but if you study, you'll do fine in his class.
He is a very tough grader and pushes to get the lab done as fast as possible. He lectures for the first 20mins than lets us do the lab. He grades the prelab video, pre lab quiz, lab notebook, and post lab quiz all in one grade. He is a stickler about doing things his way.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Literally the worst professor i have ever had. you cant make up anything. homework doesnt count for anything so theres no point in doing it. my roommate found out she needs glasses from this class BECAUSE HE WRITES SO TINY. he mumbles and slurs his words like dude speak english. just dont take him if you wanna pass a class.
I really dont relate to most of these reviews. He isnt the most passionate but teaches the class well. Homework isnt not worth much but prepares you so well for quizzes and tests. There are low impact quizzes for each chapter that lessen weight of large exams. Exams are all multiple choice and the whole class is very straightforward overall.
Honestly compared to other reviews i expected worse but i kinda liked Murray in lab as even though his grading was tough as long as you did the work he was pretty fair on it but i havent heard good from his lecture classes
Attendance isn't graded, but you need to go to class. I don't know why his reviews aren't that great. He's very clear with how the course is operated, and he does take time to answer questions- even thanks students for them. Very straightforward. lowest 2/3 quiz grades drop. Exams multiple choice. One of my favorite professors. encourages learning!
The only good thing about this man is NOTHING. I beg of you to get out while you still can!!!! He is an AWFUL professor and grades so hard, and doesn't round up 2 measly points in order for you to pass. He will make you SUFFER and want to set yourself on fire. BEWARE!!!!!!! You have been warned! :)
Could be worse but would I take him again, absolutely not. Would I recommend him to my worst enemy, absolutely not.
I really didn't like his attitude and his way of teaching
He is a really good professor and the structure of the class makes it a lot easier to get through the course. There are quizzes after finishing each chapter and 2 exams in total. The quizzes are short, only taking about 30 minutes, and they are really helpful to stay on top of things and made the exams easier to study for overall.
This is a weed-out class for most people. Dr. Murray was always available for office hours. He was always pushed to really understand the material. Knowing the material really helped in lab. He was always ready to explain something in a different way if you didn't understand.
If you are a hard worker and put the time in, you will thrive in this class. Dr. M will help you if you help yourself and want to do well. He responds to emails in a timely manner, is flexible for extra help, and the quizzes help so much. He is tough, but only if you are not doing what you need to. His lectures are clear and is open for questions.
Murray is a good professor he's not too bad like what other people rate him. His lecture went pretty fast we were often 2 chapters ahead compared to other classes. There are 3 exams worth 80% of your course grade so better study for that. The third exam is the ACS, if you score 90 on that exam, he will take that for your whole semester grade.
Had to drop this class halfway through, his lecture goes so fast it is very hard to keep up, and he lacks in explaining chemistry concepts (he will put equations and numbers on the board expecting you to understand that with little explanation). I know many other people who also had to withdraw due to the challenging quizzes, exams, and pace.
I love chemistry and it has always made sense to me. Professor Murray made it so much more difficult. He went too fast and didn't provide a lot of examples. I tried studying and made worse grades than if I didn't. My major is Chemistry as well, so it really hurts my credit and my GPA. I went from Jackman semester 1 to him semester 2.
By far, he's the worst professor I've had in three years. Please don't take him. He's also rude and has a nasty attitude. He is the least bit helpful. Our class average was really low and he blamed it on us as if he ever helped us.
This professor doesn't communicate well with students in general. My child had such a rough time starting Freshman year because of his class. My child was doing perfect in Chemistry Lab, the same topics as this class, but this professor is very strict on grading quizzes and homeworks. This professor is disrespectful to my child's accomodations too.
save yourself, very rude and unhelpful. made this class 100 times harder than it had to be. wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy
doesn't give many opportunities to get your grade up. Grades are solely based on homework, weekly quizzes, and 3 exams.
He was an awful professor, I had to drop out of the class and retake it because of him. He does not care about his students; I tried reaching out to him, and he only advised me to drop out and give up. He doesn't help students, rarely does. If you visit him during his office hours, he's very unwelcoming. The way he teaches makes no sense.
Knows what he is talking about. The homework is from the book. Gives a quiz after each chapter but allows you to drop your lowest 3 grades. The exams are kind of hard but if you study you'll be fine. For the final. if you do better than your current grade in the class he'll make that your end-of-semester grade.
Dr. Murrays class is great. Well organized and thought out. Teaches from example problems and writing things out on the whiteboard, which is SO helpful. As long as you take notes and study, you should succeed. Has a quiz for each chapter which is so helpful when studying for tests (3 total). Homework for each chapter helps prepare for each quiz.
This was by far the worst professor I have ever had he is rude, not kind a tough grader, and take this if you want to be lost not knowing anything about chemistry and probably fail the standardized final and all of his tests that have nothing to do with what he teaches. Additionally,he will accuse kids around you in the class of cheating who are not.
Fast-paced course progressed really quickly. Weekly quizzes counted for almost a quarter of the final grade (but allowed to drop 3) and were kind of tricky, but feedback was provided by the next class period. Good review session before exams were helpful.
PLS DONT TAKE HIM! He does not even let you use your lab manual on exams like every other professor does. While I can tell he cares, he simply is the worst prof I've ever had. He has no idea how to actually teach. He literally brags about how low his class average is. SAVE YOURSELF
Philip Murray. I thought I would be fine with this professor after I got appointed him my first-year. I was not fine. He makes things so much more difficult than it needs to be and adds extra things that you wouldn't need to know in other classes. I get that I didn't put as much effort in as I could, but I felt like I was drowning in this class.
This is the second time I have taken Dr. Murray and I really enjoyed his class. His expectations are clear. Grade is based off of ten quizzes for each chapter (two get dropped), and three exams. He uses the whiteboard to teach doing example problems which are so helpful. He is also accessible outside of class and willing to help. Great experience!
I would rather harm a unicorn than take him again. He doesn't allow us to work the problems ourselves he just does it and expects us to learn. I put in hours of work outside of class and had an AP Chem background so this class wasn't insane. His tests are 40 mcq but in 80 mins. The first time I ran out of time and had to guess completely.
V further more to what I said it's absolutely insane how a professor can threaten students like that, I can't take no further action because he's threatening for an F and just to even go to his office to talk about it, completely inappropriate and disrespectful.
Worst prof ever. Accused whole class of using ChatGPT over basic dimensional analysis. I had an A until the last lab when he dropped everyone to a C. When we asked to talk, he said we could go to office hours “with consequences” accept the C or risk an F if we pursued it further.
This was one of the worst professors I've had by far. Talked about how he failed more than half of his students for a summer course. He threatened to drop the class average after accusing everyone of using chat gpt when the equation we used came from simple dimensional analysis!
I'd rather be trapped in a porta-potty at Coachella in August than retake his class. He teaches like he's being paid per student mental breakdown. If I ever had nightmares, they were about Dr. Murray.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR even if he's the only one to choose from just take it another semester!!! Trust me I didn't listen to theses reviews and he is genuinely the worst threatened to fail the whole class and dropped everyone's overall grade by 10 points after the last day of class!
AVOID THIS PROFFESOR AT ALL COSTS! He won't answer simple questions during the lab when asking for confirmation about the procedural steps, is the only proff that doesn't allow open notes and has failed multiple students openly!
I took lab with him and lecture with another proff (thank god) and half the people in my lecture were all retaking the course because of Murray!!! He was awful as a lab proff so i couldn't imagine having him for lecture too! I'd genuinely drop out!!
Literally terrible, laughed in multiple peoples faces after asking for help. Not understanding and you will pretty much have to teach everything to yourself bc he doesn't teach or explain anything clearly.
i took him a few semesters ago, but i just have to come back. genuinely the worst professor ive had during my time here. i would rather get struck by lightning than take him again. he was never any help, laughed at you when you didn't know what to do, and was so rude all the time. it was a miserable time and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy
I'm not finished with this class yet but I'm on track to get a B or higher. Attendance isn't mandatory but you would need to put the work in outside of class to learn the material because he goes over most of it in the lectures. There is a quiz almost every week on Thursdays and homework is due on Wednesdays. Good if you know what you're doing.
Best chem teacher I ever had. Has hw and a quiz every week but they are easy and go over what he taught, can drop 3 grades at the end. probably saw the bad reviews and upgraded himself, cause he is respectful and goes at a really good pace, explaining anything that seems difficult. I wasn't good at chem before him and now I'm on track for an A.
Avoid at all cost, genuinely. Never failed a class ever but he is my first. Should have dropped when I had the option. His class has made me so academically discouraged and even hindered my other classes trying to keep up with his. He has laughed in multiple of my classmates faces when asked for help, and then doesn't. Brags abt being poorly rated.
We had weekly quizzes, at first it was very stressful and intimidating, but Dr. Murray is always available for office hours and wants to help his students learn. His teaching style doesn't work for everyone but he is a good professor who prepares you extremely well for exams. The quizzes help you keep up with the material, just show up to class.
this mans class made me rethink my entire life choices. really not that helpful and you have weekly pearsons homework and quizzes that will throw you for such a loop. unless if you want to spend 5 hours studying after each class because he doesn't know what he's saving take another professor and save yourself
Not writing this out of spite, genuinely just don't take his class. So rude and passive aggressive. A terrible teacher and thinks he is Jesus himself resurrected. There's a quiz every class to “prepare” you for the exams but then he says anything that WASN'T on the quiz WILL be on the exam. He'll also laugh in ur face if u ask any question at all.
No. Just no.
I have heard that he is not good in lecture, but for lab, he was great! The lab consisted of pre-lab quizzes, post-lab questions, and a simple lab report for every lab. There was also an open-notebook final exam. There were no formal lab reports, which made him the best Orgo I Lab Professor! He wasn't the most delightful guy, but the lab was easy.
