SoOoOo BORING!!! Thinks jokes about the balance sheet not balancing are funny.... He's consistant though.
While I didn't have this professor, the text that he co-authored was a required text. Riddled with spelling, grammatical and typographical errors, it was frustrating to use. You'd expect a book to be properly written and edited after spending 100+ bucks!
I really liked Dr. Olds. His presentation of the material was very logical, the tests were similiar to the homework, and I found most of his jokes to be funny, especially the ones in the slides.
I dont know about anyone else, but powerpoint presentations dont do anything for me. Something shared by Olds to my class, 16 out of approx. 180 students (last 3 semesters) have come out with A's.
His tests are exactly like the study guide he wrote, it is worthwhile to buy it. Otherwise the powerpoints aren't very helpful, and if no one answers his questions he just says "well I guess you didn't want to know the answer" and expects you to
he just expects you to know what you're doing by doing the homework...he doesn't explain a lot
smart man, dry sense of humor, monotone voice, boring power point presentations, hard tests that progressively get harder, can be inconsiderate of student's needs, homework doesn't always correspond to tests....i do not reccomend dr. olds

expected you to know how to do the material without being taught it first. will not review things that someone does not volunteer to do first. has a worse tardy/absence policy than the school. and basically everything that the last person said below.
Old sucks.. he's the nerdiest professor I have ever managed to meet. Do yourself a favor and take any other account professor before you take this guy... unless you are ready to withstand super boring jokes and a very self rightous nerdy presentation.
GO TO CLASS! attendance counts for SO many points and can drop your grade a lot. very monotone, but not too difficult.
This guy doesnt make sense when he teaches and he thinks he's so high and mighty because he co-wrote the book that he teaches out of
Acct is not an easy subject,so people naturally blame the teacher.Regardless of your professor you to have to read the chapters on time and have a general understanding of the material which makes it easier later on. If you do that you will likely get an A or B.Gives E.C. for HW and slight curve.
He is the worst teacher if you need to learn the principles of Acct he teaches the material as if you already know it. Complete A** hole when it comes to helping a student the damn man thinks we are suppose to know terms and equations when we are new to the subject
he's hard, but if you are an accounting major this is the stuff you MUST know and he teaches it all indept, if you get a C in his class you already know more then the students who got A's with other teachers
25 multiple choice questions for each test that seem to be nothing like the homework or his study guide. Do NOT take him. His tests are tricky. and I really believe he prides himself on how low the class average is. Last semester it was like 66. He should not teach. at all..
Enjoyed the class.
Recipe for getting an "A". (1) Read chapter before lecture. (2) Go to class and pay attention. (3) Do the recommended HW on time. (4) Buy the working papers from the bookstore to make the HW easier. (5) Study the power point handouts given in class. (6) Practice other problems since the working papers saved you time anyway. (7) Take responsibility.
AWFUL TEACHER!! He doesn't explain anything clearly...and he wrote the book. He is truly one of those teachers that doesn't give a sh** if you fail or not. I would recommend ANYONE else other than him!!
the hardest teacher. He expects too much! doesn't explain anything at all!
He's absolutely terrible. This class is seriously ruining my semester, and I'm trying to decide whether or not to withdraw tomorrow. If you want any chance of doing well in this class, don't fall even one class period's worth of work behind. You have to be completely on top of things. I got sick a couple times, and now I'm dying trying to catch up.
Wrote the book we use and teaches to us as if we are on his same level of understanding. Fairly helpful, but his tests arent what he goes over in class.
This class is hard, tests are usually very hard. He teaches very well, you just have to work hard in his class, his study guide helps ALOT!-even though it is 50 dollars
complete jerk ass teacher.doesnt compromise for ANYONE. I had an injury and it was hard for me to make it to class on time. Still marked me tardy for literally 3mins. You definitely need the non tardy/absence points to pass with atleast a C. Even in email's hes very cold and not understanding.DO NOT TAKE HIM. if u do ur an idiot
Dr. Olds is very intelligent and he assumes that all of his students are on his level. Sadly, most students aren't. If you are a math brained person, take his class. If you aren't, don't. He expects his students to come to class prepared, make sure you read the book and do the homework, if you don't you WILL NOT be able to follow his lectures.
pretty funny guy for an accountant. very good teacher. remembers what level course he's teaching and who he's teaching it to. good class to take for non accounting majors.
sucks ass. proud of how bad his students do. proud of how hard he makes his class. jackass
Very unaccomodating. FYI; I'm in his class right now, I'm an A/B student and right now I'm getting an F. His tests are rediculous! Don't take OLDS!!! He said to my class that in the past 2 years onlt 12 people have gotten an A in his class...consider the odds before you take OLDS.
dont take his class, plain and simple..Very monotone, puts you to sleep
More complaining students who wish to have life fed to them with a silver spoon. He is challenging, intelligent and very fair. He gives u TONS of opportunities to succeed, its ur choice to do em. His tests arent surprises, very similar to hw. You get what you deserve in his class, if u have an F u probably deserved it. Thanks Professor Olds!
if you can take someone else please do. i took him because his class time fit the best into my schedule, biggest mistake i could've made!
The material covered in this class can be difficult, thus the professor plays a large part in the overall difficultly of the class. I felt that while his tests came directly from the homework, 7 questions per each chapter (2 chapters a test) were too few. He was extremely approachable and would talk to you for hours! Good guy, not so good teacher!
very bad!! hard to understand
Brilliant! It is obvious that he knows his stuff, and he does a great job of explaining how to do things different ways (not just the way he thinks it should be done). Yeah, it's a hard class, but he teaches well.
Used CPS clickers to award bonus points and check attendance. Do NOT miss this opportunity to raise your grade by a letter! He wrote the book and definately follows it. Tests are much like homework problems as he works them in class. Very clear lectures with important information for accounting majors and business majors alike.
I would definately not recommend this professor. He barely even reviewed the notes and HW and he even admitted that only six people in all his classes consistently got A's on their tests!!
BAD BAD BAD. Half of the class drop it. He is one of the hardest teachers i've ever had. He only really cares about getting through the power points. The test are very tricky. One upside is he lets you drop your lowest test grade. SIMPLY JUST PICK ANOTHER PROFESSOR. K?
HE is the WORST Prof. I have ever encountered. His tests are very confusing and MOST (not an exagerration) of the ppl in class where either taking him for the 2nd time and still not understanding or getting ready to withdrwal. Spare yourself the D or F. He flys through Hmwrk reviews & tests have like 14 questions, clickers only give you a % bonus.
He didn't teach very much. You basically have to learn everything on your own.
ACCT is pretty easy, if you keep up with the material. It is very possible to get an A in this class if you put forth the effort. Click points can help you grade a lot--cease every opportunity to gain them. You must read the material before coming to class, or the lecture will seem rushed, or wont make sense at all.
THIS GUY SUCKS I COULD LIST ALL HIS BAD QUALITIES BUT THAT WOULD TAKE AN ETERNITY. I MEAN I GOT A "B" IN THE CLASS BUT THAT WAS BECAUSE I READ EVERY ASSIGNED CHAPTER LIKE 3 TIMES(REAL PAIN BUT I NEEDED THAT GRADE) I DONT RECCOMEND HIM TO ANYONE. HONESTLY, IF U CAN TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER GO FOR IT.
as long as you do the homework and attend class its not that hard to pass, and he gives you alot of chances to improve your grade through clicker questions and you get to drop your lowest test score.
Wow..where to start for this class..to be honest, it is not hard if..big IF..you have a study guide because YOU will be teaching yourself through the study guide, but the study guide basically serves to help you pass the class, it helped me get a B...he's ok, not that great...the study guide will be more your teacher than him. Clicker points help.
The professor is very helpful. I took the course in Fall 2007 and got an A. I visited the professor many times during the office hours and got a good understanding on the Financial Accounting Concepts. I got 95 % in this class.
make sure you read your book because he finds random things out the book to ask you a question about on the exam. come to class to get clicker points and do your homework...if you can take another professor please do so
I took this course at another school and failed miserably. Old's is a pretty funny guy and he knows his stuff, clearly, since he wrote the book! Go to class for clicker points and do the homework.. I really felt like I learned a lot. Thanks Dr. Olds! It IS an intensive course, but thats no matter who you take. I got a solid B and it felt good!
Self taught class. He teaches the class as if no one else is in the room. I recommend that everyone abstains from taking this class because Olds makes it hard than it should be; my recommendation is to take the class with another professor.
He is a very good professor. He wrote the book used in class. Give u a lot of extra credit for doing clicker questions. But if you don't do the homework and keep up with class, forget about getting an A. If u keep up, the class should be relatively easy. Doing the HW is essential.
I was worried about taking this class, as I do not like math, but he made it very easy to follow, and the book explains things well. I will be taking 204 with him.
Extremely smart! Extremely helpful! Clicker points are a good help. Read the book and he'll explain it in class, and, yeah, do the homework - you help noone but yourself
horrible. the end.
Take this class with someone like holland or edmunds...olds teaches this class like everyone has a background in accounting. yeah. no. we don't. very hard. i read and attended and had no clue what was going on. take with someone else to actually learn something. i like accounting...just not with him.
Doesnt explain anything: Take with some one else.
Teacher is known as a tough teacher but if your motivated and come to class to earn his extra credit clicker points, you should have no problem getting a good grade in his class. I want to put emphasis on MOTIVATED.
He's one those teachers that expects you just to get it. The first day of class he'll tell you the avg. test grade is in the 60s. I know over 10 ppl who have taken this class and failed it not including myself. I took it in summer school with another teacher and past with flying colors.
Oldes is great. He has a sense of humor and really knows his stuff. I bet most of the people that are complaining NEVER do the HW and NEVER go to class, which are two huge ways to get a good grade. HW is not graded but used as extra credit. Replaces 1 low exam grade with final if u want, and is always willing to help. TRY and you will succeed.
RUNNNNNNNNNNNN!!! get an overide ,wait till next semester do not take this course! Theres cumalative exam, 60 avg. on tests, and he decided it was necessary to erase all the posted notes right before the final
Easy class if you do the homework! And study for the tests. The homework is really important though, because using that and the book you're pretty much set. It is self-motivated, but this is college. I would recommend the study guide, its very helpful!
Worst class I've ever had. Went to all classes, took notes, did the homework and studied for hours...to no avail. Doesn't curve at all and readily admits that his test average is a 65. Do not take this professor.
Excellent teacher. Clicker questions every class which isn't so bad because they were considered extra credit. Takes the average of your clicker and uses his own scale to add points to your grade. His examples in class are on point and makes things easy to understand. Most questions on his test are math applications that a middle schooler can do.
Very difficult to pay attention in class. Tests are only 14-15 questions so missing only a couple questions results in low grades.
Most of the people who are complaining about him probably never studied or went to class. This class starts off pretty quicky so make sure you get the basics down or you wont do well later on. He is an excellent professor and more than generous dropping your lowest exam grade and offering lots of extra credit.
This teacher makes you think outside of the box. What people don't understand is, this is college! It is supposed to be hard. Tests are difficult but the clicker system = awesome. I received an A in the class. Go to class study at least 2 nights before, know everything you can about the chapter and you will do fine! DO HOMEWORK help for clicker?'s.
Professor Olds is a hard professor that gives challenging tests. He is a fair guy though in the fact that he allows you to get bonus credit clicker question points to boost your poor exam scores. The bonus clicker question points are a real life saver. If you don't like to work and want an easy class DON'T take this!
I really struggled in this class but I recognize that Prof. Olds is a good teacher. If Accounting is not your forte, I'd recommend an easier teacher. If you do take Olds, be sure to go to all classes and do well on the clicker questions! They can really boost your grade. He is a fair teacher. Tends to drone on about how superior accountants are.
Boring, not interesting and exams only 14 questions.
Olds is the best. If you read every chapter and read it to understand it, I gaurantee an A. I passed with an A in both his 203 and 204 class.
He actually teaches the information and understands it enough to explain it well. You really have to read, do homework, and go to class, but he is a really good teacher. I had Holland for 203 before I had Olds, so I had zero comprehension of acct. but Olds explained things so much better.
There is no review for the exams. Makes tests sound easier than they actually are. Not very helpful and makes you feel stupid when asking a question
He's not married and has no children so accounting is his life! I'm sure he's a nice guy, but his class is tough! It moves at a very fast pace.
Professor Olds is good at what he does, but this class was by no means easy. If you go to lecture, do the homework & read the chapter beforehand you should be alright. The bonus clicker points will help your grade more than you think, so make sure to take advantage of them! Make sure to print the slides before lecture, as well.
A very intensive professor very hard as he expects the students to remember a lot and write just about everything down studying is difficult but if you want to learn all you need about accounting take him otherwise do not take him if you just need the course for a requirement.
run....just run.
Explains material very clearly. Just like any other class attendance and reading the book will help greatly. This is a tough subject but Olds explains it well its just hard to remember everything accounting is very detail oriented.
Explains material very clearly. Just like any other class attendance and reading the book will help greatly. This is a tough subject but Olds explains it well its just hard to remember everything accounting is very detail oriented.
Tells really lame jokes. His lectures will put you to sleep. Tests very hard, even if you understand the material. Besides knowing how to do the stuff, pay close attention to actual text in book! Wouldn't recommend him to bad test takers
Teaches as if students should know most of the Accounting material involved. Tests are beyond hard! Accounting is hard itself, but I would definitely recommend taking another professor.
Where to begin. He is an extremely intelligent and arrogant man, loves to hear himself talk. He makes it very clear that reading and studying are a most for accounting and it is ever bit of the truth. I am a great test taker and found his very hard. Accounting is tideous enough without his trick questions. Ill be taking Holland for 204!
Horible Professor. Not helpful, your always wrong and he is right. Tests are timed, you have 35mins. to complete a test. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!
I was nervous to take him after reading reviews, but he really is not as bad as everyone makes him sound. The tests are hard and this is definitely not a class you can blow off. Accounting is hard because it is hard. If you read, do the clicker questions, and study hard YOU CAN PASS!! I ended up with an A in 203 and I'm doing well in his 204 also.
Biggest struggle with this class if that you have 35 minutes to answer 14 questions. Most are computational meaning you'll have to crunch numbers to get an answer. Tests typically cover 2 chapters. Go to class to earn clicker points which will help boost your grade in the end. Overall this professor is rather boring but work hard you'll pass.
Overall, the class was okay. Accounting is a very hard subject but if you attend class and read the chapters, you'll pass. Clicker questions are definitely a savior in this class. I had an F at first and ended the course with a B. It just requires more work than most courses.
Tough professor, very difficult tests, tough class, but if you read the book thoroughly and do all the homework problems, you will pass.
I don't know why he gets such harsh criticism on here. Is accounting fun? No. Is accounting easy? Not for some people, but if you study you'll do well. Dr. Olds is a super nice, helpful, and occasionally funny guy. I took Holland for 203 and liked Olds much better. The best advice I can give is DO THE HOMEWORK, do it twice if you need to.
Prof. Olds isn't a bad guy, but his teaching methods are really terrible. Accounting is a hard subject, and he teaches it as if we already know exactly what he's talking about. The subject and material is what it is, but I wouldn't recommend taking him unless you already have a basic understanding of the course.
you will NEED to read the book, there is no way around it. what he teaches in class reinforces what you learn on your own by reading the book. the tests weren't too bad, but they are timed which makes them much harder. he gives extra credit for clickers which are a HUGE boost to your grade. attend every class for this reason.
WORST TEACHER EVER. HE IS THE REASON I CHANGED MY MAJOR!!! HE WROTE THE TEXTBOOK WHICH GIVES CONFUSING INFORMATION, AND HE IS THE ONLY TEACHER THAT USES OUT BOOK BECAUSE HE WROTE IT JUST DONT TAKE!!! TEST ARE HARD AND THERE ARE MANY TRICK QUESTIONS. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!
Prof Olds wrote the textbook. I wish I had realized that before I signed up for his class. he gives very conflicting information and is primarily focused on examples of accounting instead of the principles that are important to LEARN accounting. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO!!!
He is a GREAT teacher and like everyone said STUDY the material. He is pretty straight forward and give you a huge extra credit opportunity (up to 10 pts added to your final grade for clicker questions). However go to class, and look at the slides and for god sakes GET THE TEXTBOOK, I didn't and it made it harder however I still worked through it
This professor is incredibly boring. You'll find yourself struggling to stay awake in his class! He has an incredibly monotone voice and he teaches as if the entire class already knows the subject of accounting. Basically you're on your own. His exams are hard. He loves trick questions. Basically, don't take him.
The hardest part of the class is trying to care. Beginning a class by explaining how he hates an Oscar Wilde quote he mistakenly attributes to Ogden Nash, Olds constantly makes unfunny jokes that will grate on you. He claims accounting is hard, but I've skipped most of his lectures and have yet to fail a test. Only take if you've no other options.
Took 7-9:40, had to withdraw. Very boring, makes you want to fall asleep. Not very good at explaining what he's teaching. You'll also have to buy HIS book which isn't a big deal but other professors use much better ones that are more helpful. Everything is out of the book & the tests are VERY HARD! JUST DON'T TAKE HIM GOODLUCK IF YOU DO! STUDY HARD
He obviously knows what he is talking about. However, it is hard to keep any interest in him or the subject. When he teaches, you want to fall asleep. I had to withdraw because his tests were hard, even if you study for 3 hours. Your grade is determinant on your test results. Hw doesn't matter. So study, HARD.
Took my freshman year (1st Semester). He is a smart and intelligent teacher but he is very boring and not very helpful. If you absolutely have to take, don't take in AM. Go to class every time. Go to tutoring. Go to him. Get book and go for clicker points. Very boring. I do not recommend.
Acct 203- Hard Teacher. He requires a lot of studying. There is 5 tests and a final. Tests are only on 2 chapters at a time. There is a Test every 2 weeks. He offers Clicker Questions for bonus points. I highly recommend using the clicker. If you study a lot then you should earn a good grade.
He is a good teacher. He knows what his talking about and good at clarifying things. I was expecting a really boring teacher after reading the reviews on here but his not. However you have to go to class every time and do the homework. otherwise you will fail the class. Clicker bonus points are very helpful.
I'm not sure why people have rated him so low. He is professional, helpful, clear, and is willing to help if you get behind. His 5 exam structure is great, and clicker extra credit points make the class an easy A.
He is a great professor! Offers bonus points for clicker questions. You do not have to buy the text book that he "requires", he even said it himself that you do not need it. Just come to class to answer the clicker questions, read the slides before hand and !VIOLA! an easy A!
He's a knowledgeable professor. If you study hard, you will get a good grade. You will have to learn on your own sometimes because it's not easy to understand the concepts from the first time (preparing for the lecture by reading ahead helps). The study guide helps a lot, so it's definitely worth buying. It wasn't easy but I got an A. Recommended.
Gives you friday quizzes EVERY week... on top of being boring and having a bad attitude from the beginning. He loves when you come in late on tests days and slam the door. If you don't take Holland and end up with Olds, have fun ;) every friday and practically your grandpa teaching you accounting, yeah that fun.
test is exactly like homework. if you attend class this is an easy class.
Doing the homework is a MUST. I started out not doing it and could never catch up. I barely passed but he gives extra credit in the form of clicker questions so that's helpful. His lectures are boringggg but he's a nice guy if you go to his office hours and talk to him and he's very helpful.
Homework MUST BE DONE! If you take: Go to class, do clicker questions, and get in a study group and read book. Exams are copies of homework, except the last exam, which looked completely different! 5 exams, one final which replaces bad grade. Exams diffic. 10 topics to learn. Extremely boring lecture. Talks to the last second of class. Don't take!
only way to describe this class is brutal No the ONLY way to describe it is HELL and rough and brutal and stupid and boring very boring
Class is pretty straight forward. The topic is verrry dry, because it's accounting. Pretty much everything you need to know for each quiz are in his lecture powerpoints and lecture noteshomework (posted separately on blackboard). Not really difficult to get an A or B. Just STUDY the lecture notes and come to class for the extra clicker credit.
Not a super interesting professor, but he knows the subject is fairly dry so he just gets the point across with no bells and whistles. Clicker questions for extra credit. If you read the notes, you can do the homework. If you do the homework, you can do the practice problems. If you can do the practice problems you should ace the tests.
Professor Olds is a very smart professor. He's clearly very passionate about his field, and really knows what he's talking about. However, he is very bad at actually teaching the information and making sure that you completely understand. It's very hard to come back from a failed test. Does not grade homework, however not doing it you will fail it.
This class is very boring (duh, accounting). But, you have to work hard to get a good grade. 5 tests and he drops the lowest grade. You have a chance to earn 45 clicker points. You must get the clicker questions correct to get points. Some are easy, some are hard. Go to class. Do the practice problems before each test and you'll do well on them.
He told me that tutoring wouldn't help me. Not pleasant. Knows what he is talking about but cannot convey it to students. He says class average on tests are 60s, but doesn't change how he teaches, guess he assumes it's the students' fault. Extra credit points for answering clicker questions correctly. 6 tests, drops the lowest. Tests super hard.
Run away from this class and don't look back. Awful. If there is another professor, I suggest taking it with them. Only good thing is that he gives extra credit for correctly answering clicker questions in class. Attendance not mandatory. Extremely hard tests, unsympathetic to struggling students.
Not only he does not try to help struggling students in anyway, but he tries really hard really really hard to make everything harder.
Difficult class. Lectures weren't that helpful, but it pays to come to class for his inclass examples and clicker points. I suggest doing the practice problems from blackboard, because the answers are given there. exams are multiple choice based on application problems. Mess up one calculation and you'll miss 3 questions based off that problem
Alright so accounting sucks, Professor Olds is not a very good teacher. HOWEVER his handouts and study guides are extremely helpful! Just go to class sit on facebook or something else and DO THE CLICKER QUESTIONS THEY WILL SAVE YOUR ASS and just spend a good 3-4 hours a week studying his study guides HARD.
There isn't any graded homework. Olds will post handouts on blackboard that are really helpful and def way more helpful than his rushed lectures. BUT It isn't that hard to get a B, come to class for clicker points, study his blackboard calculation handouts and any class examples he writes in class. Exams are tricky, so read carefully! good luck!
Overall, not a terrible teacher, definitely knows the material well but can sometimes ramble on and is pretty boring to listen to. Do all of the homework assignments because they can be counted as extra credit for your overall score. Easy to fall behind so come to class often and try to focus while you're there.
Professor Olds will post all of his notes & power points on Blackboard. Have these printed out for class to take notes on & to use during clicker questions (receive bonus points that will be added to overall test avg). Also, the homework is not graded but he will go over it & it's helpful for studying. Tests are easy if you come to class & study.
Professor Olds posts great lecture notes. He is willing and able to answer questions! I wish I'd saved all his course docs to help me later in acct303. Olds is straight-forward, respectful, and explains concepts clearly. Read the topic notes before class, go to class, do the hw and self-study problems: you will do well! Take Olds!
Professor Olds is very clear about his expectations from day one. His test are exactly like the homework and the extra practice problems that he gives you. He puts everything on blackboard so make sure you print it and read it and be prepared for class. Do the homework so you can answer the clicker questions during class and get extra credit.
You are going to work hard for that A. Homework is not graded, but not doing it will really hurt you in the exams. There are optional clicker point questions that will help. Examples are done in class. Don't study powerpoint slides, but study the lecture/homework notes and you will pass. Exam questions are similar to what is posted online.
This is one of those classes that requires a lot of work to do well. If you're someone who thinks accounting is a dry subject, taking Olds may not be the best idea, because his lectures are very long and boring. You must do the homework and self study problems in order to do well on his exams. Most of the class always fails.
He is not a personable teacher at all, and tests are low on questions so you cannot miss many. Gives a lot of study materials which is nice. He rambles in his lectures, and is not afraid to call people out for not paying attention.
Dry topic with an even more dry professor. The topic of accounting is very boring and dry. His lectures are spent going over the homework's that are available to print through blackboard. He fills in the homework's VERY sloppily, you cant read them at all, and he gets mad when you ask what he wrote. Take another professor if you can please
Professor Olds types up his own notes, homework and study guides. There is a free, online textbook available for extra review. Bottom line, come to class prepared and participate, and you will get an A. Attending and looking at your phone will not cut it. If you demonstrate genuine interest, he is happy to help. He is a good professor.
Even though a lot my group mates were not happy about this course it was pretty easy for me! His lectures are very organized and clear, as long as you do homework and get clicker points on lectures you're to go. 5 exams, score great - don't take final! Prof. clear states his expectations on the first lecture. Material is not hard.
Homework is the hardest part about this class. He doesn't really teach you anything new, he just gives you advanced and more complex cost accounting problems and expects you to figure it out yourself. The tests aren't easy but are pale in comparison to his homework (I got an A on every test.) He just wants to make you think through things.
READ YOUR SYLLABUS! Every single thing you need to know to succeed is in the syllabus! Buy the clicker, & get to class a couple of minutes early. First bonus question in the first 2 minutes of class, last one is in the last 2 minutes. Each class is worth 3-5 bonus points and you will need them. Do the homework and you will earn points and pass.
This is a hard class but Old's types all the notes you need for class (no textbook), gives power points, homework problems, self study guides, and a bunch of extra credit points if you do the clicker questions. I formed a study group that met every week and got an A in the class. You will need to study to get an A, but it is manageable.
There is no required textbook for the class as Prof. Olds types the notes for each topic. Print them, read them, highlight important points. Do the hw (some of the clicker points come from the hw). The most helpful tool for me to achieve my A in the class was the self-study problems. I did them over & over before exam day.
Although this class may be extremely boring to sit through, Professor Olds gives you all the tools you need to succeed in his class. He posts a powerpoint, notes, and self study problems for every topic to help you complete the homework. Not to mention the HW is all for extra credit clicker points. Easy A if you do the study the material.
The only grades are 4 test and they are not easy. His lectures are long and boring. DEFINITELY DO NOT TAKE HIS 3 HOUR LONG CLASS. It was torture, actual torture. Good luck. VCU doesn't really have any good accounting professors IMO. I ended up just taking ACCT 204 at J Sarg. Much easier
Olds is a fantastic professor. He gives clear notes and makes it very clear what he expects from his students. Olds is always willing to help, so definitely don't hesitate to go to his office for extra help. That significantly helped me. The subject, class time, and Olds' personality is pretty unexciting but I learned a lot. Highly recommend!!
Olds is pretty straight forward. Guy knows what he's talking about, and will help if you reach out for him. Lectures are a bore, but thats because accounting is a bore/hard. On the bright side, if you use the materials he provides on blackboards (Self study problems, etc) youll be fine. they are Great help for the exams.
Very straight forward. Read his notes and do the homework and it's and easy A. Its worth it to go to class the extra clicker points will help you a lot in the end.
Professor Olds is fantastic! He provides you with so many notes and optional exercises, so there isn't any excuse for not doing well. I didn't even have to take any notes in class, everything is online. He gives extra credit and drops the lowest exam as well. No textbook required either. Go to class, study the material and you will be fine. Easy A
He puts all the notes online, so you don't have to go to class. Tests are tough bc only 18 q's, but if you do go to class and use your clicker then you can get an A. The language of accounting is hard and he is boring, but overall its common sense once you get past the jargon.
He knows the material frontwards and backwards. His homework, notes, and study guides are helpful but there is a lot to learn and the tests are tough. Also keeps night classes the entire time.
Clickers are extra credit so going to class is not mandatory but I highly advise getting those points since they can really help towards the final grade. 5 tests & if you do the self-study guides for each topic and understand the concepts you will get an easy A on them. I'm a science major and I got a 98 in the class so that says a lot.
I thought Olds was a great professor. Organized, answered questions thoroughly, explained everything simply. If you struggle with the content, go to class and do the self study guide.
Boring teacher. Very monotone and reuses powerpoints from a decade ago. Only 5 exams plus the final as grades. He likes to throw trick questions and curve balls for exams. EXAMS ARE HARD. Uses clicker questions as extra credit. He does put everything online, which is nice. Be prepared to study a lot. He goes over everything insanely fast.
His notes and self-study problems help ALOT. I practically taught myself accounting through his notes. They're very concise and explain pretty much everything but the lectures definitely help reinforce a little bit. Often, he goes off on tangents during his lectures. Although, his clickers really help your grade so it's worth going to them.
Olds is a very reliable professor and knows his subject well. There was a lot of homework but it was very helpful in learning the material. Attendance is mandatory and he gives extra credit clicker questions. Follow along with the lecturws, do the homework, and come to class and you should do just fine.
I hear a lot of people think accounting is hard but as long as you come to class, get extra credit clicker points and are able to do the homework and self study you will be fine. Flexibility with grades is built into the EC and the final so don't count on asking him for anything because he won't offer it. I would definitely take him again
Olds can be condescending at times, but he actually does want you to pass. His voice makes the lectures boring. Tests are easy if you do the homework and listen to the lectures (he'll tell you the exact format of the test). Go to lectures to get extra credit, it really helps boost your grade. Final is optional, but is also an easy grade booster.
Olds isn't a bad guy. Boring, perhaps, and his accounting jokes are lame (not the funny kind of lame). But he provides a TON of relatively easy in-class clicker points which you definitely want to take advantage of. And his note packets that he sends out are comprehensive and fairly clear. He can be condescending though.
Does his own notes which are outstanding. The hw and study set questions are the best prep for tests. Class is key so attend them and look over the notes before class to get his e.c clicker questions right. Tests are not impossible but challenging. Good prof, very detailed and knows his stuff. TAKE! He is the acc goat.
Dr. Olds wrote his own notes, tests, homework, and self-study guides. He gives you every piece of material that he tests and it is up to you to put in the work for the grade that you want. Very easy class. Very easy concepts. Truly is an introductory class. You get your moneys worth.
the worst professor I've ever seen! No feedback. the way that he teaches is very boring and the tests are very hard. His grade method is so audit. No quizzes at all Just the tests.
Here's the thing I'm sure he's super helpful but during his lecture it is extremely hard to stay focused he's VERY monotoned and I just lost interest. Gives homework but it isn't graded. 5 exams 1 final optional replaces lowest grade. 18 questions on each exam, the final had around 25 questions.
He has the MOST DRYYYYY LECTURES it's impossible to stay awake. he is really boring but always gives practice tests before the test online. You only have 5 grades in the class all tests so if you do bad on two tests your screwed. i wouldn't recommend.
He is an alright teacher if you pay attention. If you don't pay attention/do the work/do the clicker questions, you will not pass.
Took him for 2hr40m class, only 40 minutes devoted to new material each class. Rest went over hw probs, but spent ages yelling at the class for not getting answers right. Felt more like self-guided study to me. Sold some of the necessary hw probs in a tiny spiral book for $40. The book had no learning material, just the hw. Graded participation.
Olds grading system is tough, if you find tests hard like I do. 5 tests, 18 questions each. No mercy on the grading policy for anything. If you screw up 1-2 tests your grade will be down next to the trash. I had to withdraw, my advice take another professor if you want a better grading policy.
Olds was in my opinion one of my best professors. He makes notes that are relatively easy to follow and really help you study for the tests as well as his study problems that you have the decision to do. The one thing I didnt like were that his tests have only 18 questions so you can only miss one to get an A on it. But the tests aren't too hard.
Honestly, Prof Olds is one of the worst professors I've had. Not only are his lectures extremely boring but, he is very condescending towards the entire class. The only times he addresses the class as a whole is before exams just to yell repetitvely for 20 minutes at people for not coming to his lectures which he himself makes incredibly dull.
Professor Olds is a great professor. He's straight forward about telling you what you need to know to pass the class and if you do the homework and study, you're almost guaranteed a decent grade. HW isn't graded but you should definitely do it. The only real issue is there are few tests with few questions so there's little room to mess up.
Class is boring!!! However if you're able to sit through his class, you'll come out retaining a lot of accounting knowledge. Very structured course with a test every two chapters. If you work on the homework and read through his lectures, you'll feel prepared for class that day as well as know the answers to extra credit clicker questions.
Notes are very hard to comprehend, he makes his own curriculum and tests compared to the rest of the accounting department. he means well but teaches horribly and does not know how to explain to anyone of a beginner level accounting student. I would go as far as to say material is extra for no good reason, other profs are much more pleasant.
Definitely a tough grader. I like the structure of his class since you know what to expect going in but his tests are hard since they're only 18 questions so if you miss a couple you're already in the C range. He definitely will help you retain some accounting but if you aren't willing to work hard for it, don't take his class.
Olds is a really good teacher. If you want to do well you have to work for it. His lectures are pretty boring but its worth it to sit through them. He has a lot of tests which is nice because it's a small amount of material to study each test (two chapters). Only thing that sucks is the tests are 18 questions so if you miss 5 questions you get a C
Professor Olds has a good deal of experience in the field. He also doesn't use a textbook and instead gives very instructional notes, HOWEVER as others have said his tests are heavily graded with no curve, and in class he doesn't necessarily yell but rather just waits for someone to answer his questions from prior assigned reading (not graded). GL
Get ready to teach yourself. The class was 5 exams (18 questions each) at 100 points each and 11 super easy BB quizzes at 9/10 points each. You have to do well on every test to even try to get a B. Doesn't curve grades. I went to tutoring every week and still got a C. High withdrawal rate and most people got Cs or Ds in my class. No final exam.
Prepare to teach yourself accounting. His lectures are beyond boring and he makes little to no effort to make the course interesting.
Professor was the toughest teacher I've ever had. His lectures are almost unbearable and he has a tendency to repeat what he said when someone asks a question rather than explaining it in another way.
Time to teach yourself accounting! Dont expect an A unless you WORK! Olds tends to ramble during lectures and gets frustrated easily if nobody answers questions. He made all the notes for the class, reviews homework problems in class. 18 question exams make little room for error. He def isnt for everyone but if you tough it out youll be okay.
Professor olds is a great teacher. He is very old school. There arent many exams. He gives quizzes that can help your grade. Id say his class is pretty tough for many people. Be sure to read his outlines and look at examples because they are what will be on the exams. I never went to class, but that would help too.
I highly recommended avoiding this professor. He gives no extra credit options, does not give credit for homework, and basically acts like he does not care about whether you pass or fail. The exams are very short, so if you get a small amount of questions wrong, you're already doomed.
Lol never again
Show up, listen, and read his notes, do the HW and you will get an A or B. Grading consists of 4 exams and 10 homework assignments. Exams are 18 questions but they are similar to the notes and practice problems he gives you. Seriously just read his notes and come to class to get extra credit. You will pass easily. The dude knows his stuff.
He writes his own notes so there is no textbook. In my eyes the notes are the most important thing. If you read and understand them there should be no reason you should not get an A or B in the class. Make sure you understand the first couple of topics as you build on the knowledge throughout the semester. Offered extra credit this semester!!
Be ready to teach yourself. If you already have a busy schedule I would not recommend taking this class. Personally, I did not like the format of his class. His notes are a bit difficult to understand. He leaves no room for error. His exams are only 18 questions. He gives no extra credit, the homework is not graded, so your grade is test/quiz heavy
Makes you work for your grade, but you end up getting the grade that you deserve. Although I received a C in the class I really did earn that grade. He makes amazing notes & if I spent more time reading his notes I would have done much better. gives great lectures as well. He gives five 18 q. exams and drops your lowest score. don't fall behind!
Avoid at all costs. You will be bombarded by huge passive-aggressive emails & guilted for skipping optional assignments. This professor is throughly technologically illiterate, causing outdated/incorrect quizzes & unfair grades. Too many supplemental materials, too many emails, bad course policies, & terrible class format. Stay away!
When I was having mental issues I reached out to him and his only advice was to drop the course, rather than work with me and help me succeed. Even my advisor acknowledged he was bad about accommodations. Only grades are quizzes and tests. Avoid him if you have any difficulty learning from a book or mental health, because he will NOT help you!
Yeah stay away from this dude you will almost certainly fail. First day in his class he seemed as if he was proud that so many students fail his class. His class is ridiculously hard. Will not accommodate or compromise with students, so do not expect a shred of empathy or understanding.
The course was outlined very clearly (10 unit quizzes, 5 tests), however you dont get any feedback on tests/ quizzes so there is no way to know what to work on or how to improve. His lectures are incredibly condescending, repeatedly saying if you dont have it by now, withdraw.
Horrible. I tried So so hard with this class. He makes you waste a whole tree worth of paper by making you print out endless notes and you are basically teaching yourself unless you are already familiar with some material. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS! He doesnt care about his students!
If you listen to his lectures he goes over every single example you will have for the homework. Simply follow his instructions and there is no reason you should not get an A. Homework is exactly like the exams, no surprises. Great professor if you want a strong foundation for accounting. Take this class.
