nice grading scale: >80=A! just make sure you do the practice tests, even if you never really study/read/go to class you can get an A or B
you do an open book practice test which helps. Plus there is a tutor session for his class. Also an extra credit paper you can turn in. I ended up with a B+, OK teach,
He reads right off the projector for the whole class...which doesnt make it very interesting.
This class was by far the easiest class I have taken. He is enthusiastic about science and about helping people learn. He was very helpful in any questions we had and asked us if we needed extensions for quizes and tests. Take him if you have a chance.
His lectures are hard to pay attention to, but all his notes are online so i didn't worry too much about it. He has homework tests that are before the tests, they are hard and take forever, but do them because they help your grade. Tests are hard but he curves!! Do good on the homework tests!
HIS VOICE IS TOO JACKED UP TO TEACH
he really does his best to help students out if u ever have questions or any kind of problems. his lecture can be dull, but he gives u every opportunity to get a good grade: online open book tests, class tests based on the online tests, an easy grading scale (80=A), and extra credit.
Do not by any means take a class with snider unless your major is in science. Insanly borring lectures and no one ever stays for class. He tends to be in a bad mood alot so forget about talking to him. Useless notes!!!! If your looking for an easy A forget it. take someone else.
You won't get far if you don't read the book. Like the others said, do the practice test. But they're HARD though. Don't sleep in his class (or in any class ^_^) he will call you out. You also won't understand his lectures unless you read. DO NOT slack. Easy A if you're smart.
Snider is very helpful. If you have any questions he responds to posts on his message board faithfully. Homework test are hard but they prepare u for class test (even have similar questions). Definitely work in groups and u should be able to pull a B.
Read the book & complete the homework tests! His lectures may not be fun, but he tries hard to get people to pass and will help you in any way possible. He curves the tests alot, on one test I made a 72 and it was considered an A! The others I made 80's and got an A in the course.
can b quite boring and class isnt that helpful but u got online notes and online test that last for about a week. he's very passionate about the subject. can be understanding and very willing to help. big bonus extra credit assignment that can help and not too bad to do.
Didn't care for him at first, but as the semester went on, I understood him more. He's old-school and conservative, but he knows his stuff. Just be sure to come to class (no matter how boring) and do the homework tests. 80s are an A, 70s are a B and so on.
no one shows up 2 class and its hard 2 hear him talk on his mic. take home test are hard & then the class test are different than take-home. he curves alot but the test are hard anyways. i fell asleep a lot in his class b/c it was boring. if u like 2 read a lot then it will be ok, if not forget it
people that gave him bad ratings didnt GO TO CLASS!he is awfully easy, multiple choice tests are too easy if you go to class and read assigned chapters.Online quizes are automatic 100's b/c you can do them 4 times.FINAL's just the last online test and old tests combined.GET THE MESSAGE(sniders line)
The stuff he teaches is hard and doesn't really make much sense when he explains it. On the bright side, with the homework tests and the extra credit you can get a high grade even with not so great test scores.
Snider is the worst kind of teacher. Snotty (sarcastic whenever someone asks questions), arrogant (yes, we get it, you went to Harvard), a PowerPoint reciter, hard of hearing (un-PC, but true), unable to admit mistakes. Only plus is that it's easy to make an A in his class due to his unique grading system. Take Williams instead!
I went to every class, I am NOT a science person at all and this class was majorly hard! I did not do well on tests even after studying online quizes and going over notes that he reads from in class. Very hard to hear and unclear. Take someone else if you have the choice!
Worst Prof I ever had at UOH. 1st test nobody got above a 60% 2nd test he said he expects even lower. NO CURVE! Tests are not represenative of lectures, readings, hw etc. He even gave a extra credit assignment that required 100 dollar payment to a bio conference. Im a a-b student and dont understant ne thing he teaches.
Homework tests were easy, and his tests are basically from those and the cd. He offers good help if you need it. Great grading scale 80+ is an A. But not really sure that is is really for non science majors, because it is hard and has a lot of hard concepts to understand.
sucks. old and can't hear him w/o mic. enthusiastic and is very knowledgeable. his tests are quite hard if you don't have good memory. he reads mostly from his own packet of notes that he sells. the packet of notes contain assortment of facts and info and can be difficult to understand. i found it very difficult to learn. this class is about memory
This class was insanely easy. Snider however is very disorganized and just distracts you from what you already know. I stopped coming to class for a while but I missed a test and had to take the makeup. I spent one night studying 3 weeks of material and made an 82. It was effortless. I attend class but I ignore him. BUY THE WORKBOOK- its important!
LOOKING FOR BIO CLASS, KEEP LOOKIN. LECTURES WERE POWER POINTS, GETS VERY EMOTIONAL OVER ATTENDANCE, IS VERY BORING AND THE CLASS AVERAGE BEFORE FINAL IS LOWER THEN 60. DOES THAT EXPLAIN ANYTHING? OH AND 100 FOR EXTRA CREDIT, CAN WE SAY NO. GOODLUCK

Terrible Professor, changes grading rules without notifying students.
He LOST my final exam and I received an incomplete in the class, which stayed on my record for almost 5 months - he was so unhelpful and did not respond to my emails I wrote him or attempts trying to resolve the issue. Finally I had to go to the dept. chair and he got really mad at Snider for being so irresponsible and nonrespondent...
His class is really easy. I didn't show up to class half of the time and made a B+ in the course. His class was a joke to me....LOL
People who complain about this course have to be seriously dumb; like "you-should-drop-out-of-college" dumb. It is a non-science majors science course so it's hella easy. Yeah he's old and emotional but he's also passionate and clear about the material. Take him before he dies.
I do agree that he is very passionate about biology, but by no means is his class easy. Unfortunately coming to class is helpful, boring but helpful. His grading scale is pretty good he makes it easy for someone to at least pass.
Look he is REALLYpassionate about what he teaches. Granted his lectures can be boring but if I had to take this course over again I would DEFENITELY take him again. He is always there to help anyone and takes his time explaining not like other teachers who just rush through.
he is a sweet old man, and loves biology, but his lectures are horrible. too much work for a non-science major class, and goes way to much into detail. i dont recommend him if you just want an easy science credit
HIS CLASS AVERAGE IS LOW, AND HE DOES NOT CURVE. IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOUR FAILING MAKE SURE TO DROP THIS CLASS!!!!!! MY FRIENDS TOOK THIS CLASS LAST SEMESTER AND TOLD ME IT WAS AN EASY A BUT THIS SEMESTER HE CHANGED EVERYTHING. THE TEST ARE KILLER HARD AND HE WILL NOT CURVE, NO CURVE, OK DID U GET THAT NO CURVE. NOT AN EASY CLASS
Very Boring Fell asleep half of the time...test extremely hard even if you did study and read the book and the power points, rambles on and on. try to avoid this one
I think professor Snider sets the bar reasonably for his liberal arts students, if somebody can't pass his class then they just aren't putting in any effort, as little efforts as the class really requires.
very very very boring class. he's always off topic. he's so old and pretty nice i guess. but easy class overall.
okay wow. he's the most oldest boring teacher ive had since ive been at UH. he doesnt talk on topic? we're learning about biology but he talks about WWI? i supposely failed his class, but my friend that took it with me made lower grades than I did BUT PASSED? impossible!? okay i do not recommened unless you are actually gonna come to class
It's a difficult subject. The class tests are variations of the homework. It does involve understanding the questions rather then memorizing the answers.
The material it self was very interesting, espcially for pre-meds. The lectures are extremely boring and pointless, he just reads the note packet. Test are hard! paper is easy.
Leave his class while you still can. If you have been awarded many scholarships and you want to save them, then my suggestion is to drop his class and pick someone else. This guy talks about random subjects that don't relate to the material. All I hear is blah blah blah HARVARD, blah blah WWI blahhhhh. I mean seriously, i try to pay attention !
Very boring professor! Always rants about off topic subjects. His tests are broad, and hard! No curves. He does offer extra credit however. I do not recommend this professor at all. For the first test the average score was 53%!!! Stay away!!
He is old a boring and old. do not take him. drop while you can. he is old
Hard Prof. he is very smart and knows his stuff, but acts like he regrets having to teach a entry level class and expects you to know what he is talking about as a non science major, very confusing at times
The class material is very interesting. Going to class makes the tests a whole lot easier. He is very passionate about genetics so he comes off as a crazy person sometimes, but it's all good fun. I enjoyed the class once I got used to class taking forever to end!!!
Annoying hypocritical old fart. Preaches about how you must understand and not memorize but the final is all about memorizing 400+ questions from prior test and quizzes. No Curve. It’s not worth taking to satisfy core as a non science major. Lecture were boring confusing and non helpful, have to rely on book the entire time. Just stay away.
human genetics is one of the most interesting classes. you learn about all sorts of diseases. his notebook is all abbreviated so it looks like a foreign language, but if you go to class everything becomes clear. tests aren't that bad. 80+ is an A. he genuinely cares about his students. his best line is "now put that in your pipe and smoke it"
Dr. Snider teaches off of slides whcih don't even help study for the tests, talks a lot, really boring, take someone else, he does offer lots of extra credit, he is very old
Good news, you don't even need to go to his lecture(boring) but still can pass with an easy B+(=70%). If you read the end of the end chapters and do the practice test you should do very good. do the extra credit and you can get an A because and an A is 80%+. The book really helps, but lecture sucks.
Dont take this class if you dont have to. Study the old tests. The questions are the same. The paper is a blowoff its just the test that suck
Professor Snyder really knows his science, although he can be very boring at times. He does care about student learning and gives everyone a chance to improve. If you wanna learn BIOL, take his class, read the book, and study the notes, and you should do well.
Very easy class, study the book and notes and you will learn. Go to class and it will get confussing. Just stick to the book. He knows Biology, but can not teach. He has some funny remarks that has not been said for decades. He is old, but easy. Take come exams are easy. In class exams are just like the one you take home. Very easy class.
Cool grading scale. I actually thought going to class helped a lot so at least be somewhat invloved. If you memorize the homework tests and understand the concepts should get an A. The term paper is super easy and a lot of extra credit. He is old but he wants the best for his students and is very helpful. DONT BUY THE CLICKER
He is an interesting man who knows his stuff. His tests are hard to study for because of the way he words the questions. He uses his own grading scale which makes it difficult to figure out your grade. It is an interesting class and he is a very intelligent man, I'd recommend it if you are interested in genetic disorders.
Read the book. At the beginning he was kind of boring, but I got used to him over time. Will be taking next semester because - all other classes are booked. He is a very intelligent person and nice on a one on one basis. Read the book and you'll be fine. His test are word for word from the quizzes. Straight forward class.
Nice Man, but the class is hard as hell!! Betterf spend time studying than going to class!! I studied at least 3 hours a day for this class and did a great work on the term paper, but ended up with an A- which is not bad for a hard class like that!!!
Philip Snider, contrary to popular belief, is a great teacher. He's quite a character and older than most profs, but the experience he brings to the subject is immense. He knows what he's talking about, and he'll make you a better student by the end of the class. 80% and up is an A; there's no excuse not to do well if you study and pay attention.
Teaches the class like we are biology majors.
Besides the fact that this class is not very interesting, Dr. Snider is a good teacher who is passionate about Biology. It is not a blow off class, but is pretty easy to get an A. He talks about a curve being unfair, but.. a B is an A. If you can't figure your grade out in this class you are either lazy or not too smart.
Snyder knows his biology, but he rambles on and on about stuff that is insignificant to the class. He offers extra credit and one should take advantage of it. attending class is not mandatory, but if one does all extra credit available then an A should easily be attained.
Do not take this class! He gets off subject a lot and is not helpful. He can be very rude too. The class was extremely boring.
loves what he is teaching! do all the sample test because there is alot of the same questions on the real test! compare notes with other people to get all the test!
I got an A in both 1310 and 1320 and rarely went to class (not recommended but it worked for me).Print out all of his slides (4-6 slides per page) and the homework tests will be so much easier! You can even work in groups for these tests. Study the answer pool for the homework + the slides and class tests will be easy! He also gives plenty of time
I wouldn't advise anyone to take his class. Not only was he the most annoying teacher, in my mind, but he's the rudest I've ever encountered.Don't ask a question or he will tell you how stupid you are.
I like Dr.SNider, he loves to teach. Although the class can get pretty boring, he gives you a lot of help and assist you. OF course if the information is told over and over again on the course content of webct & on the syllabus, he will get upset about repeating stuff over and over again!! Just do your work and you will be fine!!!!
I AGREE WITH LAST STATEMENT. JUST DO YOUR WORK AND HE HELPS YOU A LOT. WE ARE IN COLLEGE AND WE NEED TO ACT LIKE IT.
Dr. Snider is a very nice professor, he is old but he cares about the students. The tests are a little tricky but there are a lot of ?s from the homework tests. The extra credit paper is easy, should do it. Lecture can be boring but he knows what he's talking about. 4 tests and 4 homework tests.
save your GPA and get away from him.despite the fact that he's old and mean.his bio class is SUPER hard for a nonmajor class.i dont care how smart or how nice he is.he cant teach a bunch of business and pysch majors how to love biology.btw he also tells us to change our major to biology. i HATE HIS CLASSSSSSSSSSS
Dr. Snider knows alot about Biology but he should stick to research. Class was pointless since he reads word for word from the notebook. I got a B by busting my ass for the class. A word of advice do not take this class if you don't have to. Its a really interesting class don't get me wrong but Dr. Snider will make you hate the class.
Dr.Snider is a nice person,he knows a lot biology.i went to class about 4,5 times to pick up my tests mostly.Bombed all 3 of the in class tests, studied really hard for the final which was surprisingly super easy, did the extra credit paper, and magically made an A-.Not easy but not hard, dont go to class its useless but def keep up with the book =)
I agree with the previous comment. First 3 class test were extremly difficult, but the last 2 (inlcuding the final) were easy. Offers several extra credit opportunities. Ended up with an A-. Ok Class. Stick with it.
Attending class isn't necessary and beyond boring (he goes off tangent a lot). Focus on answering homework tests. The first 3 tests were killer, but the curve in the class makes it easier (50 is a D, 60+ C, 73+ B-...) and the final was really easy. I studied last minute, did the simple extra credit paper and got a B. It's hard but not impossible.
Don't do it! Lectures are tedious and incomprehensible, especially if you are liberal arts minded. I could never understand anything he was talking about. This class caused me endless stress. The test questions are impossible. The curve means that you will probably pass the course, but this class might ruin your entire semester.
Do not take his class! It was the most frustrating college experience ever! His tests are extremely difficult and does not go over the material well at all. If you don't like putting yourself through torture then I strongly suggest not taking his classes!
Im in his class its the first day. i just dropped it now. Take Knapp everyone says hes the best. Really im just sitting here on facebook. this guy is old, outdated, or obsolete however you wanna say it he is not interesting at all. Incomprehensible the first day it sounds like he doesnt like school. Its not his fault he just cant capture interest.
Ok Here's the deal with Dr. Snider, He is older and absent minded at times. His knowledge of Biology is VAST, but sometimes he is hard to follow. Most test material is out of the textbook. DO THE HOMEWORK TESTS and you should be fine. It's pretty much the level of difficulty a college level natural science course should be.
Dr. Snider is older, and he comes off as being cranky sometimes, but he's just angry about peoples lack of concern about our planet etc.. You would likely be as well if you knew as much about it as he did. He's extremely smart, and despite his stern demeanor he really is a nice guy. Biology is not supposed to be easy, and it isn't a blow off class.
Dr. Snider is very smart and knows what he is talking about when it comes to biology but it is often difficult to follow what he is saying if you aren't familiar with the material. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR FIRST YEAR STUDENTS. If you are going to take this class, read the chapters BEFORE class and pay attention to the lectures. You have been warned.
The exams (for human genetics, at least) were easy, but I often found his opinions offensive, and his lectures were not all that helpful in understanding the material. He was also not very clear about what was on the exams and what wasn't.
He is sometimes a little confusing to understand, but he cares about education and does his best to accomodate. The class tests were a bit difficult for me, but if you fail his class, that's your own fault. He offers an extra credit paper, & if you work with others on the homework tests, you should be fine. But he's very monotone in my opinion.
There are 3 exams total. The final is not cumulative. There is a short term paper - each student is assigned a different disease to research. For the exams you have to memorize everything in his notebook since he is vague on what is on the exams. But he gives plenty of extra credit opportunities for you to bring up your grade. Good luck!
He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities during class, there is also an extra credit term paper which helps out a lot.
Professor Snyders class was not that hard at all considering its a natural sciences course. If you work with others on the homework tests and read the book for his class tests you should make an A in his class. He gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Extra cred questions in class along with a extra cred paper. These really helped me out. Not t
do not take him, his tests are ridiculous!!!! He gives a review of a 100 questions..... and when you take the test your feel totally UNPREPARED, because the review does not have anything to do with the test!! He thinks he knows everything and will get under your skin because he is not helpful what so ever when you ask for help!
HE IS THE MAN!! PEOPLE SAY BAD THINGS BC THEY DO BAD IN HIS CLASS. PAY ATTENTION! IT'S COLLEGE THIS IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EASY!!VERY INTELLIGENT AND MOST IMPORTANTLY VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT BIOLOGY WHICH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF A TEACHER. ARE THEY PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE TEACHING AND DR. SNIDER IS. HE CAN'T HEAR BUT I THINK IT'S FUNNY!
Please, for the love of God, do not take him. I studied my @ss off for this class and still got a C. My sister is a Biology major and I got a tutor. He is so unclear in his teachings and he's rude. I went to his office multiple times for help and he never helped me. He is incredibly boring. The only good thing though is he gives away EC in class.
Dr S is so passionate about what he teaches. Although his lectures will put you to sleep, they can sometimes be really interesting. Genetics affects us all, which is why the course can be captivating at times. His exams reflected the review, and he always makes sure he is clear and answers your questions. i would recommend him!
This man insists on talking the ENTIRE CLASS. This is not an exaggeration. He goes through the material at a fast pace and won't stop talking or pause until the end of class. If you finish a section, he will keep going and claim he still has 3 minutes left. His voice is pretty annoying too.
im a non-science major and took him. super hard tests but he gives you a crap ton of opportunities for extrac redit. got a C on test 1, another C on test 2, and a high B and just did all the extra credit and pulled out with an A. You never have to go to his class either!
I learned more from reading the textbook than attending class. He lectures the entire time, which would be fine if I could understand him. He never used blackboard correctly and didn't post lectures on time. I was very glad when this was over
This is for human genetics. He is a nice, passionate man, but does not understand what or how students of 2012 learn or care about. He should stick to research as he seems to be exceptional at that. With that being said I made an A by reading his notebook and the book. Never went to class. Very nice man though
Truly the best professor at UH. He actually loves teaching and is passionate about genetics. Just read and know what is in the notebook and skim through the book. I got an A! Do extra credit it adds up :D
Lectures do not match up with the textbook reading. Tests are ridiculously hard, and he is so difficult to comprehend. Never uses Blackboard site correctly or efficiently. Talks the ENTIRE class period, mostly over things that don't make any sense whatsoever; then will call you out if you fall asleep. Just an awful class.
the professor was nice but his test is hard and not easy to comprehend do not take him he give out alot of extra credit though
When he speaks he gets passionate enough to where he is understandable and interesting ; but when he goes over his powerpoints he gets boring. Sometimes cracks a joke to wake everyone up, funny guy, but hard tests.
Dr. Snider is veryyyyy nice. I do not recommend this class if you are not willing to work hard. This class was quite difficult.
This class is not as hard as majority of the people said it was on here. 85 is an A, TONS of extra credits, roughly 40 to 50% of the questions on the reviews were on the tests. The questions from the tests are directly from his lecture notes. Just do a lot of extra credits and you will get an A.
Very intelligent professor, interesting lectures. Exams were from notebook and text. attending class is not required but can make the difference between an A and B
If you have the chance to learn from Dr. Snider- do it! Enroll in his course. You will learn so much and his course will remind you why you decided to major in biology. Tip: Pay for the notebook ASAP because the copy center messes up and you will get an incomplete. Take active notes and review!! Tip: 80% of everything is SGD.
THIS PROFESSOR IS RIDICULOUS. Not a single thing he rambles on about in class has anything to do with what the tests are over. He jumps from one topic to another with no direction for the class. The tests questions are out of the blue and don't corroborate with ANY of the material learned in class or even in the book. Worst professor at UH.
OMG professor Snider is just awful! He tests are brutal. His class requires tons of time and effort. He is unclear of what he wants us to study and what he doesn't.
Exams are very hard but try to memorize EVERYTHING about the disorders. Start studying 2 weeks before the exam. Make sure you read all of the parallel readings and textbook chapters assigned and you will be fine. I was making B's on every exam but I did EVERY SINGLE extra credit question he gave us and I ended up with an A. He is very kind.
Dr. Snider is an amazing professor. His lectures are super boring but sometimes his lectures get really interesting. His exams are tough because there is A LOT of memorization involved. If you hate memorizing or don''t have a good memory.. tough luck. I made an A in this class because I started studying weeks ahead and did a lot of the extra credit.
For the love of your GPA, PLEASE do not take BIOL 1310 with him. Tests are incredibly hard and he is unclear of what he will test you on. He lectures to the last second of class and to top it off, his hearing aid does not work properly so don't even try asking anything as it will take you up to 6-7 repeats for him to understand.
The material is not hard, but there is way too much of it. Sometimes when your taking an exam the disorders get mixed up in your memory. Study weeks before exams, & read about the disorder before class. He asked questions from assigned chapters, & outside readings, but most students didnt read. You probably should, but the textbook is not the best.
This course is better entitled "clinical disorder descriptions" -- not too difficult but does take time to memorize the material. Around half of the test questions come from the practice exams, and the rest require direct memorization of statistics. He's extremely nice, but his lectures are very boring since he reads directly from the notebook.
Human Genetics was a very interesting class. Dr. Snider is very passionate about the subject and made his own notebook for the class that you must buy! This notebook is the secret to an A. Book not actually needed. Do study ahead to memorize the disorders and do the practice tests. One easy paper and three tests.
The curriculum is much harder than what a basic non-science major should have to take. The tests are quite hard and having nothing to do with what he teaches. would not recommend him!!!
I would not call this class easy. He lectures for 80 minutes straight, so definitely pay attention to the powerpoints slides and you absolutely need the book for reference since his lectures are difficult to understand. His hearing isn't good so asking questions can become an ordeal. The tests are difficult so make sure you read the book.
I originally thought this class would be easy. Everything that will be on the test is all in the book. Just memorize, memorize, memorize! I honestly didn't think I did bad after finishing a test until I got the grade back. The class average for the first and second tests were 60 and 62, if I remember correctly. Topics aren't hard, the tests are!
Puts grades in last minute and just reads off the power points. Power points have some questions relevant to the test; otherwise, you're better off reading the book. Extremely difficult for a non-science major class.
Ok, so I got an A on all my other classes this semester but a B- in this one!! I would not recommend taking him. He put in the final course grades two days after course grades were due, he doesn't usually post grades online, and the tests are tough! Not a good professor in my opinion... It's possible to pass this class but you have to work for it.
