This Professor is the most hilarious teacher ever. He is more than willing to help you. Overall He is the best teacher I have had all together at loyola. The one thing I didn't like, was his amount of essays... He likes to challenge even the nerds of english. Which is good for every one i guess in the long run. I still recommend that you take him.
This professor is a funny guy. I liked going to class, but I felt like he rushed the essays. It is possible to do good in class, but you have to try hard in the essays. He is kind of geeky, which is cute.
Best prof I've had, ever. He's not in my major but I will go out of my way to take another one of his classes. Really funny, really down to earth and really, really smart. I can't say enough great things about him. Don't pass up a chance to take one of his classes, esp. since he isn't full time faculty.
By far the most amazing teaching I have ever had in my entire life.
Professor Sorenson was amazing. There were a lot of papers but they were 2 pages, tops. Readings are considered mandatory, however, he goes over all the important in class. Lots of extra credit. No tests. Final was only a 4-5 page paper. He was a hilarious teacher and the class was definitely not boring.
Sorenson is a good guy. He's keeps the class interesting with his discussions on the numerous interesting readings we worked on. Each reading requires a response paper as well as a final research paper on any topic we choose (by far the most fun I've ever had writing a paper). He's a very good teacher, decent grader, and approachable. Take him!
Professor Sorenson is awesome. Hi is by far the funniest most entertaining professor i have ever had. There are a lot of papers he does grade kind of harshly. If your motivated to be good at writing you should take his class.
He is an amazing professor who really cares about how you do in his class. He offers as much help as you need, but he doesn't just give you the answer. There are weekly reading responses (1-2 pages) and 4 big papers, including a research paper for the final (7-10 pages). This class is a lot of work, but it is very helpful in building writing skills
Great instructor. keeps you interested though out the course. His grading is hard, but its college and you need to learn to write good for the next couples of years. He is always willing to explain things further.
This one of the best professors. He likes to help students. Very knowledgable and give interesting lecture. He is an excellent teacher!
He is hilarious and keeps class very interesting. He made me want to go to class everyday, so take him! There is a lot of work, but it has improved my writing tremendously. Go to every class (there are random journaling points). He really wants everyone to do well, and he can tell when you aren't putting in the effort, so do the work and get an A.
Great professor! A little strange but he keeps your attention throughout the whole class. Be prepared to work but if you do all of the assignments and listen to his feedback, you should have no problem
Suuuch a great professor!!! The work isn't easy but he's very willing to help if you're willing to put in effort. He's extremely intelligent and the pieces you read in the class are interesting and challenging. If you are interested in improving your writing, definitely take a class with him.
Seriously one of the best educators I've ever had. If you get the chance to take one of his classes don't pass up the opportunity! Always willing to help and is really clear. Not to mention he is absolutely hilarious and keeps you interested. 100% would take him again.
If you want to be a better writer then take this class. He is funny and the class is anything but boring. However, be prepared to do more work than all other UCWR classes.
My favorite professor at Loyola. I got A's on all the papers but I love English; some friends said that he was challenging. He was always hilarious and entertaining though. You will not regret taking him. High use of books and the Reading Responses he assigns aren't that bad. Also took him for UCLR and he teaches the courses similarly.
VERY easy professor if you have an english background. He is very funny and sporadic. He bounces all over the place. He also cusses a LOT, so be warned. Do the work, and an A is very doable.
He's absolutely hilarious and one of the best professors I have ever had. With that being said, his class is in no way easy. His essay prompts are actually pretty hard and he grades pretty hash. Attending class is also necessary so you don't miss out on journals and other in class assignments.
I dreaded going to class. He requires you to do papers on every book you read. Harsh grader. Overall I would not recommend taking him if you're not an English major.
He's is extremely funny, intelligent, and a great teacher. However, he gives quizzes about once a week as well as a paper. He doesn't grade easy, you have to actually read in depth to do good on the quizzes also. I wish I took an easier teacher, but overall he's a really great guy and good teacher.
He wants you to write in his own format, and his way basically. And gives so much work that makes you less focused on your other classes. He always wrote "awk" on my papers which was really annoying. This class has an overload of work basically. He's funny though.
Phil is HILARIOUS. I look forward to going to his class every time. He may be a tough grader, but if you ask him for help, he will be very specific in what he wants from you. If you want to have a good time in class and improve your writing, take him.
Phil is the best professor I have had at Loyola. You have to read because he likes to give little quizes. But they're pretty easy as long as you read and know to pay attention to things that would be easy "One word answer questions" like "What did So-and-so drop at the door?" LOVE PHIL! Super funny and super helpful if you discuss in office hours!
Funniest, most engaging professor I've had yet. Material is moderate difficulty, but writing assignments are open ended (write about whatever you want based off the reading). Lots of extra credit so can be an easy A, but ONLY if you can read and write reasonably well.
Best lit professor ever, chose books and taught them in a was that actually helped you grow as a person and become more aware of the world around you. helped you make an education understanding and opinion of people and the world through literature
He's a tough grader! Make sure not to take him while taking any other hard classes because you have to devote a good amount of time to this class. I took Orgo while taking this class and was close to not passing UCLR.
Phil is my favorite professor. He is absolutely hilarious! He makes you really think out your papers and thesis statements but he will make you a better writer. You have to put in effort but you will leave this class knowing that you can critically analyze any text or piece of literature.
Phil is a great teacher overall. He really cares about improving your writing but he makes you work for a good grade. There are four major essays which you have to do well on to do well in the class. If you ask him for help he is more than happy to help you. Also he is HILARIOUS!! You will be fine if you take notes on readings and ask for help
Phil was hands down my favorite professor at Loyola so far. Make sure you read everything he assigns bc he gives quizzes. Short reading responses about once a week. Two 5 page papers. Offers like 60pts. (letter grade) worth of extra credit. His lectures are hysterical and he swears a lot. You won't want to miss class! Also very willing to help.
I can say that I have lost sleep over this class. Phil may be funny, but he is an extremely hard grader and if you want an A, be prepared to slave over your keyboard for hours just to get lousy 10 points on a reading response. Also if you plan on missing class, plan on missing a pop quiz on the reading from the night before. I do not recommend.
Prof. Sorenson is an amazing teacher and I strongly recommend him IF YOU ARE AN ENGLISH MAJOR who actually cares about an introductory writing class. If not (like me) and you're only taking the class as a core requirement-- run as fast as you can away from this guy. impossible 50 page readings every night and reading response essays to go with.
I thought we was a TA at first. Nope, he's the super young professor. He seems super strict at first, and has plenty of rules. As long as you show up prepared for class and don't miss, you should be fine. He grades tough, but he helps a lot. It's easy to pass if you follow his instruction and feedback. Would take a class with him again.
Professor Sorenson is by far one of my favorite professors at Loyola so far. He is very intelligent and also has a great sense of humor and makes the class laugh a lot. Definitely worth waiting until the second semester of my sophomore year in order to take his class.
Phil is the man. Students say he is a tough grader, but those are the students who are looking for a blow-off class. Phil will make you better at writing. If you are willing to put in the time and effort into reading and writing, i would HIGHLY encourage you to take him. Extremely funny and easy to apporach. 1010 Would take again.
Phil is an amazing lecturer. He treats you like an adult and tells you how it is. He gives 11 pop quizzes on the assigned readings so you have to keep up. He gives three optional assignments that can save your grade when making up for his tough grading. He is very fair and understands everyone sees things differently.
LOVE HIM! On top of his attractive looks, humor, and personality, he is a fantastic professor. His lit class is changed each semester so the content is always fresh. His insight to literature is inspiring. He gives 11 pop quizzes, 7 reading responses (2 are extra credit), 2 five page papers, and a group project. He is very helpful & clear /w grades
Readings every day sometimes you can sparknote the summary. All the books we read were really interesting and you had to write 5 1-2 page papers and 2 4-5 page papers through out the semester. Gives pop quizzes over the readings and he'll sometimes let you know ahead of time. He's very funny which saved me from dreading the class.
Phil is a great prof. He is clear on what he expects on his papers. Really chill and fun.
Although I do like and respect Phil, I found his class to be difficult. He is a really tough grader and there is a lot of work required outside of class. I was constantly worried about essays and it took time away from my other classes.
Phil is a great professor. Truly cares about what he teaches and makes sure that you understand the material. Lots of reading and many papers. He grades quite hard. Reading was excessive and gives 11 pop quizzes throughout the course. One group project. 6-2 page papers, 2-4 page papers, 11 pop quizzes, 1 group project. Overall very funny guy!
STAY AWAY. For a core class that I just wanted to get out of the way, this was so much work. Phil is a really nice guy for the most part, but he's a ruthless grader and often goes off on tangents about weird things during class. You never knew when he would give a quiz so going to class was mandatory because he doesn't allow you to make them up.
Great guy. Although, he does make you work for your grade, he makes you a better writer. I feel as if I have become a better writer within these past couple of months. If you want to improve as a writer I definitely recommend him. Sometimes he even accommodates to his students by asking us how we want to be graded (you have to bring it up first).
He's really down to earth and honest with his student but he's very particular about citations and grammatical errors.
HE is a really cool guy but i do feel like we did more difficult work than some of the same classes taught by the different professors. He gives a lot of feedback on drafts and papers but still is a pretty decent grader. I'm not a very good writer so the class was difficult for me but I'm still doing pretty well in the class.
Phil is great! He has high expectations but is very helpful. 11 short quizzes, 5 1-2 pg papers, 2 4 pg papers. offers ec. books aren't long and they really make you think. not a lot of hw, but you need to put a lot of thought into your writing. definitely not an easy A, but asking for his input really helps. I learned a lot, he's super kind, 10/10
Phil is the best!! Super helpful and really wants his students to do well. 2 4-page papers, 10 reading quizzes (sometimes he will not warn you if there is a quiz), 5 2-page reading responses, 1 group project. I was never really good at English but if you read the books and really try on the essays then you will get the grade you want.
Took a J-term poetry class with Prof. Sorenson. One of the best professors I've had so far at Loyola. Definitely recommend!
Phil is one of the best professors I have ever had. If you do the reading, then everything else will be really easy. Quizzes are very simple, mindless questions. Reading responses are there to help you formulate your topic for you Formal Essay. He is absolutely hilarious and makes sure the whole class is engaged the entire time.
he's a lot of work and you will probably find someone much easier. i spent too much time stressing over essays. phil is an amazing guy but a very harsh grader. i would turn in essays that i thought were perfect but would get Bs. overall, i learned a lot from him but was it worth it?? not for me bc i took this class to fulfill a core.
Phil is an amazing professor b/c he's hilarious and 100% passionate about poetry. I will say his classes, for me, were a matter of recognizing a love for English. That being said, I was willing to read and write. If you do not enjoy writing, or a challenge perhaps choose an easy, but boring, professor.
Overall this class is somewhat challenging but on the other hand you really learn how to write well. The professor really knows his stuff and really wants you to succeed, going to his office hours really help. Only take this class if you are ready for the challenge and want to improve on your writing!
If you are thinking about taking Phil, don't hesitate and do it. He is an amazing and caring professor who is absolutely hilarious. It's like having your funny irresponsible uncle lead the class. The books you read are mindless and they translate as such to the quizzes. A couple reading response papers, but all in all, very easy.
All I have to say is that Phil is amazing. I hate writing, but his feedback motivates me and I actually enjoy coming to UCWR more than I thought I would. I came in expecting this to be a course I would have to trudge through and came out feeling like I learned something. He's such an amazing person, I highly recommend.
I have mix feeling about this professor. He clearly loves writing, very passionate about it, the guy dedicates his life to teaching and wants you to do well. I felt his class was way tougher than needed. He makes you work for your grade. Expects a lot from his students. Ok grader. Big challenge though and harsh with criticism, get's easily offended
Phil is great teacher and is really there for his students. If you have any issues outside of class that are effecting homework or attendance he goes out of his way to help. He is a tough grader, but not to the point where getting an A is impossible.
I love Phil. He's an amazing, inspirational poetry professor and really has a passion for the subject. It was a 2.5-hour meet once a week class but it flew by and I always looked forward to going. If you are between him and someone else PICK HIM. Always make the class laugh and truly cares about all of our personal lives.
tough grader for a core class. Nothing seems to please him.
He is a tough grader and you can definitely find someone much easier and more caring.
First of all, Phil is the man. He picks genuinely interesting books for us to read over the course, and the homework assignments were never too difficult to keep up with. He did a great job explaining to us what he wanted us to take away from the class and what he expected us to write like. He also likes to push back due dates, which is a big plus.
Honestly was not a fan. The feedback he gives on papers seems to only be marginally helpful. theres probably, SO MANY things id rather do than sit through another one of Phils lectures.
I took Phil's UCRW class in my first year at Loyola. Someone said above, "he's the man" and that's so true. He's a great guy. I feel compelled to come on here and defend him. He was a hard grader but he made my writing way better.
Could not have asked for a better ucwr prof. I had a lot of things going on in my life outside of school and if you let him know you're struggling he will give you options on how else to complete an assignment. Tough grader and grammar heavy; he makes you work for your grade. Not an easy A but you get satisfaction after all your hard work.
Don't take Dr. Sorenson unless you want to greatly improve as a writer. He gives specific feedback and is very helpful and kind in office hours. As long as you abide by his comments on first drafts, you'll do well on the final draft. 4 papers and 3 small writing assignments. Not impossible but this class isn't a blowoff either.
Professor Sorenson is not going to be the easiest Core instructor you'll ever have, but if you're looking for someone who is passionate about literature and goes beyond just rehashing the writing of old white men, he's your guy. The books you cover will be interesting and he cares a lot about students. Don't get me wrong though, he is quite strict.
I was confused the whole time and he talked too much and went on tangents.
He was a really harsh grader!! It was good feedback but it was unnecessary to mark down the tiniest things. Also, there were so many papers and not enough time!! If you are planning on taking him, DON'T!!!
Phil is exactly what a professor should be. He cares so much about his students and it shows. He is fair and approachable (and super funny). I absolutely love him and highly recommend taking any of his classes.
Created an account here just to review Phil. So, so, so wonderful. Really made me a better poet and made me feel more confident in my poetry. Super understanding about life situations too. Looked forward to his class EVERY WEEK. It didn't feel like a class, just a really relaxing time writing and discussing poetry; much needed after days of zoom
Funny guy gave lots of extra credit, actually took interest in how students were doing. Honestly, if you're a half-decent writer and ask for help you'll be fine.
He grades essays kinda hard. He expects you to explain so much in a short essay.
Phil is great! He makes UCWR 110 enjoyable with his quirky lectures and energy. Definitely not the easiest core professor, but his class is SO worth it. He seems to care about his students and wants people to do well in his course. He's not a hard grader and gives lots of feedback. If you're a decent writer, you'll be fine!
I couldn't recommend someone more for UCWR than Phil. He makes you work for your grade but also gives tremendous amounts of feedback as well as good lectures. He is also extremely funny and cares deeply about his students.
The class was very lecture heavy and a lot of lectures felt repeated. He is a very caring teacher and obviously has a passion for writing; however, he is a very tough grader. He critiques every small thing and can be quite harsh. A lot of the times he wouldnt show us how to do something or teach us something until after he graded papers.
Phil is so nice and funny, he's super engaging in class and accessible outside. There are a few papers that he gives a ton of feedback on. He is a very very tough grader and expects a lot. He really just wants you to grow as a writer but it can be very discouraging.
Phil is a wonderful instructor. He is hilarious and really cares about his students. His lectures are great and I learned so much in his class! He gives great feedback on papers and I definitely became a stronger writer by taking his class. I highly recommend Phil for UCWR!
Phils a cool guy. Can be a little abstract in his expectations before big essays, but he gives a ton of feedback after. Feedback can be harsh, but its clear and helpful for the next assignment. Grades slightly hard but you just gotta put in the work. Also adds a lot of buffer grades to help. Wants his students to become better writers
I loved Phil as a professor. You can tell that he genuinely cares for his students and wants them to become better writers. If you feel that you didn't receive the grade you deserve, you can talk to him about it and you can get a few points back. He is hilarious as well. Though Phil is awesome, he is a tough grader so you need to work hard.
Phil is funny but he is a perfectionist. Your best is probably not good enough. Much of your grade is participation/credit for submission, but you will probably do poorly on the essays (there are a ton) if you aren't an English major. If you are taking this class just for core, take another teacher. He is nitpicky and condescending in his feedback.
Its been some time now and I still get nightmares about this guy. No matter how much effort I put in, it still wasnt good enough. He was picky about the words I would use, excepting me to write in the same format as him. Tough grader for a core class. Avoid taking him if you can.
He is a tough grader, and when I say tough I mean tough you're not gonna pass your papers no matter how good you do.
Don't take him, your best is literally never enough for him. His expectations are way too high for a core class. Every conversation I have had with him, he has talked down to me. Spent hours on each paper and never received anything higher than a B, after having countless people proofread it.
Sorenson is tough. However, he completely changed the way I write and I credit him greatly for that. He was the first professor to really push me. He's tough but so understanding and helpful if you meet with him. I came into college having no idea how to write and Sorenson whipped me into shape fast. I love him but be prepared to work hard.
The best teacher I have EVER had. This mans hilarious, smart asf, and such a great teacher. He picked out the best books I've ever read and randomly drops all these philosophical quotes and connections. I feel like I went up 4 IQ points being in this class, if you can TAKE HIM.
I really liked Phil as a person and I enjoyed his personality, I just really did not like his class. It felt a lot more difficult than an entry-level UCWR should be and he is a VERY VERY hard and nit-picky grader.
Phil is easily one of, if not the best, humanities professor/teacher I have ever had. He is very caring of all of his students, and he wants you to succeed. He makes time for every student in class to give them proper feedback on their assignments, and he pushes us to do better. He is the best and I cannot recommend him enough! We love Phil!
I really enjoyed having Phil as a professor. Although he is a very tough grader, you can tell that he truly cares about his students and the subject that he teaches. I never felt like I couldn't go to him for help. I really improved my writing over the course of the semester. It is very hard to get a 100% on a paper, but he provides extra credit.
I really liked this professor. He does have high standards for our papers, but he does a good job explaining what he expects, and his feedback on old papers will be useful for the later ones. It is obvious that he cares about his students and encourages them to come to his office hours if there are any questions or if they need help with papers.
He's a great person, but it's overshadowed by how difficult this class is. I'm an English major and I still heavily struggled to even get a B+ on papers. You never know how to please him and he will always find something wrong in your work. Plus the articles you write about are impossible to interpret. WAY too hard for an entry level course.
Phil is a very nice person and is very enthusiastic about class, and always has a positive attitude. He is a very difficult grader, and will often find critiques within your writing. For an entry level class he makes the class difficult, and the texts he makes us read are VERY hard to comprehend. He assigns little homework, work is done in class.
I'm currently taking this class and love Phil as a person but his class is very difficult. There are essays due almost every week and his standards are EXTREMELY high, especially for a core class. He's hilarious and has a great, positive attitude, he just expects far too much from his students.
for a writing intensive class this was very easy. I genuinely feel smarter after taking this class. The books we read were very good and didn't feel like homework. He is a very fair grader and a super fun prof.
I cannot stress how amazing Phil is! He is very knowledgeable and has definitely changed my writing for the better. The writing and class content itself can be daunting but he truly cares about each of his students and helps out in any way he can. Minimal homework because he often gives class time to do writing. Take him!! You won't regret it!!!
My cousin died from cancer during the semster I had him and so obviously I had to miss a few days of class. He made me send my dead cousins obituary to him THE day he died since I would not be in class. No boundaries, lacks compassion.
I can tell Phil loves the English language, and he truly cares about the work each of his students puts forth. The class is structured in a way where each essay's topic builds upon the next. Phil has been nothing but accessible, helpful, and fair when it comes to due dates and time given to complete an assignment. Take him.
Super funny and passionate! I will say his class can be hard because he is a bit of a tough grader for a core class but it will teach you to be a better writer and learn to cite things properly. He is strict on attendance but overall is a very lovely guy and I am so happy I got to be in his class this semester. I would recommend him!!
This is the easiest WI course to take! Phil is super cool and understanding. Expect to write a journal on the reading every other day. The journal prompts are generally very easy. There are a few single-page and three-page essays assigned. As a bio major, this was totally doable with other classes.
Phil honestly chill. Big part of the grade is the in class journals so you can't really be missing class. He don't play about being late. He explains the prompts and the requirements for the essays in depth and if you still don't understand he encourages you to go to office hours. Gives good commentary so you know what to work on. Great teacher.
The class was okay (a bit boring) but Phil is really nice and chill. There wasn't much homework outside of class until we started writing the essays. The last essay is over 3000 words so be ready to write that.
Professor Sorenson helped my writing incredibly. This class prepared me for college writing immensely, and the professor is amazing at his job. He is always there for your questions and gives amazing feedback on your work. In class, there are four writing assignments and many other journal entries that boost your grade. I recommend this professor!
The class itself wasn't too hard but the readings are confusing and there are a lot of them. Only graded on around 4 papers and journals entries with opportunites for extra credit. The professor is kind of wack tho. He's a lot to handle. But he definitely cares for his students and wants them to succeed.
Phil is amazing! His passion for poetry and literature is so clear and he does an amazing job sharing that with the class. He is very open-minded and accepting while still being able to provide constructive feedback. I wanted to write about some sensitive subjects in class and he was more than supportive!
One of the best professors at Loyola. If you can take him please do. He genuinely cares so much about his students and he is determined to make sure you actually learn something from his class. I feel so much better prepared for the rest of college thanks to him. Also I met my boyfriend in his class so he's also a great wingman.
He's so goated, TAKE HIMMMMM. He's very fun and have engaging lectures making the material a lot easier to learn. Has very clear criteria for his work so you know exactly what to aim for in you writing assignments. Understanding with attendance, you can miss 5 classes with no penalty. He wants all students to do well, and is a great professor!
One of my favorite professors I've had so far as a freshman. Super caring, passionate about wanting you to do better, and a very energetic lecturer. You will need to write 4 essays, with a progressively more demanding word count each time. He offers critical feedback that he wants you to take to heart. Demanding class but well worth it.
This class is challenging for one reason: the professor. Nothing more, nothing less. As time moves on throughout the semester, you will soon realize, "Why did I take this professor?" Please save your GPA and do not take him for UCWR.
If you want the easy A, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Chill dude but a tough grader for the four papers throughout the semester. Lots of in-class journals to help boost your grade, but hard to get above a B on the papers. Be ready to use up all your print funds because he is very against technology, and to be writing about boring topics.
do not take. horrible. 0/10
No technology paper for everything (except essays). In class journals, so make sure you get the book and read it. Helped his students with grammar and gave wonderful feedback. Invites speakers from the books we read, which helps with your work for the course. Lots of the work is given full credit if you do it, SO make the effort, GREAT guy+kind!
Do not take this class! He gives pop quizzes. The worst part of this class is if you don't pass the reading quizzes with above 70%, then you can't do the assignments for that reading. That is unfair to all students, especially those who struggle to understand 50 pages of a book in 2 days. He has no moral values and is not fit to teach this class.
He is very kind, and a very entertaining person. However, the papers are difficult and you have to fit into what he considers "good writing". He will make you a better writer but if you do not stay on top of this class, it's very hard to pass. His readings are tough but to be honest, he is a fantastic way to learn how to write better.
energetic, caring, and knowledgable. I'd say he's more of strict and particular grader than a hard one but will sometimes give indecisive feedback where it's hard to tell what he means. class is based around 3 hardish readings with a correlating essay for each with an increasing word count. Office hours are early so if you have an 9am you cant go.
Very passionate, funny, and caring person. Though his standards are high in terms of his essays, he sets his expectations very clearly. English is not my strong suit, but his office hours and just asking questions in class really helped me and my grade. Definitely had to put in a lot of effort.
Sorenson is honestly one of the best I've taken. He is kind and understanding as long as you treat him the same way. I took his poetry class and while it took time and work, it was very rewarding. At the end of the day, he is an amazing professor, poet, and person. I wish I could take all of my classes with him.
