Super nice guy! A bit dry! Very knowledge of subject matter. Not easy by any means but if you show up for class, read the assigned readings, and put effort into the class then you'll come out a much smarter more well rounded individual! Can't
he was a great teacher in my opinion. He made philosophy seem very clear. He does like to assign many writing assignments but coming from a guy who doesnt enjoy writing, it wasnt to bad. the assignments were fairly short and easy to write.
Class was interesting (for a phil. course), requires some homework but not bad at all.
He had some distracting habits, but it was an awesome class. I learned a lot and it wasn't very hard.
He gives essay tests, but gives you the essay a week in advance.
Very interesting class! Not difficult, do writing assignments and show up for class...you will learn a lot....he respects everyone's views!
He gives essay test only and grades pretty hard. I got an A but not without a lot of work that seems unnecessary for a general education class. There is a ton of writing assignments.
he is one of my favorite teachers!
Pay attention and take good notes. Try not to miss class. He gives several writing assignments, but as long as you read the assigned reading you should be good. Study hard for tests. The class is fun and interesting.
If you write well, you'll be ok in this class. He makes it very interesting and he's very willing to help if you just ask. Essay portions of the test are a little difficult, but not impossible. Overall, it's a good class
There are a lot of writing assignments, each worth 30 points but he gives opportunties for extra credit. Take notes during class for the objective portion of the test and you will be fine. Essays take some preparation but you can bring an outline to class. He is also very helpful and nice.
Professor Spivey is a very close minded, unprofessional, and overly judgmental teacher. He will count off for your honest opinion when he asked for you to be "subjective". DO NOT TAKE!!!
Professor spivey is a horrile teacher who gives A's to dunces and F's to the one's who really care about philosophy. And he is quite a smart ellic too.
Mr. Spivey really knows what he's talking about, but there are very few class discussions. There are mostly lectures, and he grades really hard. He tends to ask the class a question, and then answer himself.
It's not an easy class but it's not impossible. Lots of essays. I have never been counted off on my opinions as some other people are saying. He is open, he just challenges your opinions on purpose to make you think about what you're saying. If you're interested in philosophy, take Spivey.
LOVED this class! Very very interesting. Challenges your own ideas about issues. Greater understanding of both sides of things. Lots of writting, but i did well. End of semester had extra paper to replace bad essay test. extra credit for attending relevent functions at UCA and movies held in Doyne.
This class wasn't as bad as some others say (notice the one comment can't even spell horrible, which shows why they didn't do well) You're able to meet in his office and he helps you with your outlines for the essays and also explains why you got a certain grade on a paper. Just go and pay attention
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Spivey is a VERY hard teacher. his test are unfair and very hard to pass. its to much work for a Gen Ed class. I had to drop the class because it was to much to handle! Once again, do not take him!
He is okay. It is hard to get an A, but easy to get a B. He takes attendanced so seriously. He is serious about dropping your grade if you miss too much. He will write you letters letting you know that too if you miss to much. So come to class. Overall his class is okay. He is not too hard and not too easy.
At first he seems really hard and unreasonable, and the tests are REALLY hard, but I ended up looking foward to the class. A LOT of essays and writing, but he tells you exactly what he wants and gives great outlines.
he is a hard teacher, but if you do the work you will pass. he is no an oppinionated teacher, he is very neutral. i enjoyed his class. made a B.

Professor Spivey has gathered a vast amount of knowledge, and it shows. However; even he will tell you that there is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. While he remains neutral in class discussion, and is very enthusiastic and entertaining, he tends to slip into criticism mode occasionally and can become hilariously crude in language.
this class sucks! do not take this class if you are Christian. He bashes the Bible almost daily. I think he is a very miserable person. It would be in anyones best interest to not take this class given by him.
His classes are not a walk in the park, but I have learned much by taking his class. I have since graduated and after taking his class, can do independent studies. If you want to learn and challenge yourself to think, I would advise taking his class! I took it for fun, was not apart of my major/minor. He inspired me to dive deeper into the heart of the matters I was studying and to look at them from different perspectives. If you have an open mind you can lean much from him.
When I took this class I thought it would be very interesting. It was at first but this teacher turned into a total dick. It got to the point where he was talking to the whole class like we were in 5th grade. I dropped the class. I felt like he had favorites.
This class was not that hard. I really enjoyed it. If you like to voice your opinion you will have a lot of fun. Tests are MC and essay but you get to bring an outline to class. He will look over your outline if you ask. Some of the reading can get confusing but I still made an A.
knows his stuff, tough grader, bible-basher, decent class
First of all, HE DOES NOT BASH THE BIBLE. He offers different appraches to moral problems, some including bible, and some secular. Please stop saying this, because it's simply untrue. He's a fantastic professor! Do the reading and listen in class, you'll be fine. I made a 98 on the last test, it's really not hard if you support your responses.
This man is heartless and cold. I got sick and was in the hospital for 2 weeks and I turned in my dr. notes and he said thank you. At the end of the class he failed me because I had missed too many days! All the days were in that 2 week period. His reply was "If you check my syllabus, I don't take doctor or funeral excuses." jerk.
Spivey is a goo teacher. He doesn't have a bias toward any one religion or philosphy, he simply teaches all of them and gives different perspectives on life. If you go to class and take good notes you will do fine. He tells exactly how he wants his essays written and helps on outlines for every test that you are allowed to bring in for the tests.
HE DOES BASH THE BIBLE...incredibly smart man, but hard class and definite christianity slammer...don't take...not worth it for a gen ed class
he does NOT bash the Bible. Anyone who is that offended by the fact that the beloved Bible isn't the only way to explain things does not belong in a philosophy class in the first place.
the class is not worth it for a gen ed class

He is a really good teacher. He'll make you think and his passion for philosophy will make you interested. A LOT of questioning about God, but it is VERY interesting. About 6 papers, midterm and final are 40% objective and 60% essay. He gives you the essay topic and how you're supposed to write it. Show up for class and you'll do fine
Don't take. He grades EXTREMELY difficult, takes off points for tardiness or not following essay format. Made us write 5-7 essay which are graded very strictly. plus tests on top of that. He has no mercy. Beware. but lectures are interesting. bout the only thing good bout the class.
Easy class if you listen and take notes. Test are two parts (MC and Writing). Your first test grade will be an upset if you are used to making A's. First in-class writing will be a heart breaker if you are used to making A's as well. They get easier. Great teacher if you just take him for who he is and take everything he says with a grain of salt.
HORRIBLE class, hardest class i've taken at uca yet and i'm a jr. and it was a gen ed. DO NOT TAKE, so so hard, u won't have time to study like u need 2 make good grade. i'm an honors student and have taken hard classes (physics/chem major, psci/russian minor)&made all A's all 3 yrs so far; i made a C in his class.WAY WAY WAY too hard,do NOT take!!
As long as you pay attention in class you will be fine. Take notes and make sure you read the material. He likes to lecture and there is little discussion but the lectures are relevant. Writing assignments are easy but make sure you SPECIFY!
Spivey loves to lecture, which I find is helpful when it comes to writing assignments. He has a passion for teaching which makes it easier to learn. Show up to class and listen. Your grade is what you put into it.
He loves to have class discussion and LOVES to lecture the entire class period. He knows what he is talking about. As long as you listen and take really good notes in class...you'll have an A. He gives 40-50 pts. of bonus. I was honestly surprised with how much I've learned from him and how differently I view things.
it's a lot of essay writing. you have a couple in class essays and then quite a few out of class essays. just listen to the lectures and take good notes and you'll do good. and remember to give evidence when he asks for your opinion on the essays.
One of my all time favorite teachers. I had him for Judaism and I loved him. He really made class interesting and fun every time. Gave us extra credit for watching "The Hebrew Hammer". Plus he loves South Park and Team America. If you want to learn, be challenged and have a great time, take Spivey.
If you do not like to think, read, or challenge yourself, DON'T TAKE HIM! He was one of the best professors I had at UCA. He presented everything in a non-biased way, allowing you to form your own opinions. You write alot of essays, and make sure you support everything you say with evidence. I really really enjoyed him!

Omg...he reminds me of Mr. Mackey from South Park because he says "Ok" and "alright" afer every sentence. Anyway, he's fairly easy as long as you come to class and take good notes. You can definately tell he cares about what he's talking about. He's very enthusiastic.
If your not good at writing, do not take him! Essays are a huge part of the 3 tests he gives. There are also writing assignments. But I enjoyed the class, very interesting topics!
Dr. Spivey is a little too difficult for a Gen. Ed World Religions course, but it's completely worth it. If you're a freshman and would like a teacher to help you transition to college writing, he will! He is always willing to help with this course and will allow TONS of extra credit, and he will remember if you went and participated.
The BEST professor I ever had! You write a lot of essays, but he will help you in any way he can. If you attend class and try hard, he remembers at the end when your .5 points from getting an A. He's a very caring, knowledgable teacher who presents the material well and in a way that is interesting. Not an easy A, but I loved his class!
If you are a good writer, come to class and take good notes you will be fine. He's pretty entertaining too, with a LOT of mmmKAYYS
I loved World Religions with Mr.Spivey. He is quite a character and a very good teacher. He knows what he is talking about and if you take good notes, listen, and read the textbook homework, you will be fine. His grading on essays is the hardest, but the tests are fairly simple if you study well enough.
Spivey is an awesome professor, but do not take him lightly. His World Religions class is very challenging, but he makes it way more interesting than it should be. He gives you plenty of extra credit chances. Make sure you learn to adapt how he likes papers to be written. You'll write a ton of papers, but he's willing to proof read them for you.
Dr. Spivey has been one of my favorite professors thus far. I am a Religious studies major and he makes me want to continue. His class is a lot of work so pay attention and study hard!
Spivey is a great professor, his class is very difficult (he treats it like an upper level elective) but he gives you plenty of opportunity to get extra credit. I learned so much from this class that it almost made me want to take more religious studies classes. Highly recommended if you are a serious student and want to learn about religion.
He was a great teacher, extremely tough but he tells you in the beginning that this is not like any other gen ed class. I highly reccomend him if you want a challenge or you want to learn.
Awesome teacher! Really smart guy! Says "alright" and "mmkay" a lot. :)
He is tough, He is strict on writing, and he is going to take you to a new level of knowledge. He is an amazing guy, excellent teacher though tough. You will earn your grade and want to please him. He has funny sayings, looks, and an addiction saying Mkay and alright but it only adds to the spice. take him if you get a chance
His tests are 40% objective with fill in the blank and multiple choice and 60% essay, which is given to you a week before the test so you have time to prepare. He also lets you use an outline on the test. He provides extra credit opportunities, which are really easy. He grades fairly hard, but covers all the material on the test.
Hard hard teacher, because he expects you do your work. Which is legit. Lots of reading, keep up on it, and you will do fine. If you don't read, you don't pass, that's the reality of his class.
I didn't like him at first but he grew on me. He's tough but not unreasonable. Don't miss class unless you absolutely have to. Take good notes because most, if not all, quiz and test questions come from them.
This class gave me a lot of grief at first. The tests are extremely difficult, as are the writing assignments, but he gives enough extra credit opportunities to make up for missed points! Spivey is incredibly intelligent, and if you want to learn a lot about Philosophy and are willing to work hard for your grade, then hes definitely the guy to take
Spivey can be legit hard, but he's by far the best professor I've had at UCA. Some tips on doing well: do the reading, but don't dwell on it over the notes, GO TO CLASS, go to extra credit, participate and ask questions, study the essays, and be open minded. He'll make you question everything you believe in, but constructively.
I had him my freshmen year, so I didn't try as hard as I should have. But, he's a great teacher and I learned quite a bit from him. He'll challenge your beliefs quite a bit, even if you don't have any. Only complaint is that I got a D on a paper because I turned it in last because I walked in 1 minute after class started...annoying.
Spivey is a challenging professor. He has 2 in-class writing assignments, so don't miss as well as 2 take home, and 3 exams. Although he is challenging, you will learn a lot about how to write and critically think. I recommend him if you are not looking for a blow off class, rather, a class you will learn from.
I'm not a big fan of Spivey's. The 2 long answer questions on the tests have to be 2 pages each and then theres 25 multiple questions... its hard to do in an hour. He doesn't really help you when you go to his office either. He looks at the first sentence and tells you you made a mistake and dwells on the entire time.
Spivey, very challenging he knows his stuff and knows it well. He grades papers very hard and i would deffinatly suggest seeing him with a rough draft. His lectures are definately interesting and it will make you think. He is one of the hardest teachers read he book and figure out how to write a philosophy paper you are good. LECTURES ARE MANDATORY
Hard as hell. Knows what he's doing, LOVE his lecture. But he grades crazy. This class is very very hard.
He's definitely not easy but I really enjoyed his class. His lectures are extremely interesting and he makes you think. Hardest part are the papers, but if you do well on them you should be fine in the class.
If you are a freshmen please dont take this class! If all your other classes are blowoffs then fine he could be worth it. Warning, this class is no joke!
This class will make you think! would not recommend for a freshman class. Very hard grader when it comes to papers, and very critical on the writing parts on tests. Gives alot of bonus opportunities, but is still a difficult class. I've learned so much but the course work is anything but easy and simple.
Great Professor! Knows his material. However, he is a very difficult when it comes to grades. Marks off for simple errors. Will not be taking his courses in the future.
Extremely knowledgeable, but ridiculously hard. Papers will make you want to scream. Not helpful with emergencies outside of class. Very arrogant and you can see that in the way he grades papers. No one in my class ever got above a B, and most got Cs and lower. Don't take. Too much for a Gen Ed.
Started out hating him, very high expectations of students. You'll work hard and only do ok, but very good lectures. Very hard grader, you can't blow off or bs your way through this class. Very challenging, half my class hated him but can't leave the class without being a better writer/critical thinker. Be prepared to work hard, revise and bonus.
Hardest grader I've ever had, but greatest teacher I've ever had. Amazing lectures. You learn so much. But you WILL work hard for a good grade. He will work with you and revise your paper as many times as needed to help. I went to his office all the time and he helped me to bring my D at midterm to a B at final. Very kind, helpful, & approachable!
His lectures are really interesting. You can really learn a lot from them! But, his tests are crazy difficult and he only gives 4 100 point quizzes and the final. He does offer extra credit in the form of going to films on campus. However, if you work like I do and it's on a work night, he doesn't really care and says he can't do anything about it.
Not that hard, have to actually take notes and pay attention to lecture. Not many grades so have to do well, really interesting and not nearly as hard as philosophy with him. Bonus opportunities available. Very knowledgeable professor and will help if you ask for it.
Overall, he is an excellent professor, and is passionate about the topics, but do not miss class and go to every extra credit assignment. This is not an easy class so you will need it. Writing assignments/test are alway done in class under the clock so be sure you know what you want to write before you get to class.
Difficult unless you study thoroughly. Great teacher with interesting lectures and material. Extra credit opportunities are easy.
I had Professor Spivey for Judaism and it was incredible. I loved going to class. He is hysterical if you really listen to him and delivers great lectures. I would take his classes again and again if I could. However, he is no push-over. He will make your papers bleed red ink. If you are up to the challenge, you will not regret taking his class.
Hardest class my freshman year. Don't take it as a frosh, for sure. I was sick for a week, had to go to ER, and he didn't take my doctor's notes. Make sure you go to every class. Stand firm in your beliefs because he will challenge everything you believed. However, it was a fascinating course. I learnt a lot!
great class, helpful teacher
Spivey is great. He lectures the whole class, so don't take it if you miss a lot. All tests are straight from his lectures. He gives quizzes after each religion covered, then the midterm & final are essay tests. Lots of bonus opportunities. Pay attention & make comments/ask questions often. He likes that & you get a participation grade.
Very nice teacher, but hard class. If you are a slacker and do not study much, you will NOT pass this class. Lots of extra credit opportunities, but they will not hold your grade up. All fill in the blank and short answer questions. Very very very hard class, but interesting. He's a good teacher.
Spivey can be a little too much to handle at points but he is really helpful and you will learn a lot. Not advised for your freshman year. Only take if you are a decent writer. And go to his office if you need help! He always wants to help students who go the extra mile.
Spivey is a great teacher, but very hard. He challenges his students to think in ways that they've never thought before. He is incredibly helpful and offers many cool extra credit opportunities. His lectures are always fun and makes the information relatable to current day. Again, HE IS HARD. But a fantastic teacher!
He is very passionate about this subject and really explains it in a way that is easy to understand as long as you are willing to put in the effort to learn it. If your taking this class as a filler and are not really interested in it then you may want to find a different class. But if you are interested in the subject then get ready to learn a lot
Don't take
Do not take him! His tests are mostly fill in the blank with no word bank. For our midterm we had to 2 "short" answer questions that we had to answer with a page each. If he sees you aren't gonna pass the class hell do everything in his power to get you out of the class(his exact words). He can be nice but he takes his class WAY too seriously.
He's so passionate about what he teaches! You must understand that taking notes, reading a bit, and simply listening, applying yourself, and opening your mind is essential in this class. HE IS THERE FOR YOU, but you need to make the effort of going to his office. He's a bit intimidating and seems angry a lot of the time, but he's nice! No worries!
4 in-class writing assignments, but let's you have a topic outline. Still grades strictly. If you're having trouble, definitely stop by his office. He is more than willing to help.
Get ready to take notes and pay attention. He is helpful but you have to put forth effort. Quizes are diffucult becaues he is a strict grader and the majority of quizes are fill in the blank with no word bank. However, you will learn so much while being entertained by the material. You will definitely work for an A!
GO TO CLASS! The majority of your points are from your tests, which are long essays which he will explain. 100 other points are your participation points. There are a few extra credit events which are going on a Monday night to watch & discuss a movie of his choice. USE HIS OFFICE HOURS, AND READ!!! This class will change your life if you let it.
I hoped things would get better, but from day one the lecture method is a fire and brimstone pastoral sermon with no real guided discussion for students. The centralized theme of this course is to make incoming freshmen FEAR being in college if they dont sacrifice the entirety of their being to school work. Save yourself the misery - don't take
He is an amazing instructor but expects his students to not just show up for class, but be present during lecture. 3-4 pages of notes each class. Everything he says is relevant. He is tough but fair, expects you to do the reading. If you want to learn, take his class because he will make you think. Tests are difficult but possible to pass.
Professor Spivey is a wonderful lecturer. I have him for an 8 am and he makes me excited to go to class. He counts attendance every day and will drop you if you miss more than 4 classes. His tests are difficult, but you can easily pass them if you take notes on everything he says. Everything he says is game on tests. Offers 3 bonus opportunities.
There are a few 2 page in class writing assignments that you can use your textbook on. The rest of your grade will come from tests and class participation. Tests are mostly fill in the blank and short answer - but don't be intimidated! it's easy if you know your stuff. The class is really interesting but don't bother taking it if you're closeminded
Judaism with Professor Spivey is great because he's Jewish. Lectures were very informative and easy to follow. Coarse load is a little on the heavy side but well worth the effort
Although Spivey is a difficult teacher, he is very good at what he does. I've learned a lot in his class. If you just pay attention and write down every word he says, you'll be fine in his class. I would recommend going to his class everyday.
I had him for an online class and had an F in the class until I dropped it. I would email him and ask him what I needed to do different but he still told me my responses were not good enough. I would write what the book told me about the religions, and he would tell me my information was WRONG. So moral of this complaint, just don't take him. Ever.
I had his class my first semester of my freshman year. I stayed in his class for 3 months and had to drop because it would've been impossible to raise my grade. There was no homework in the class just reading. We would have to write a two page essay in 50 minutes and he expects everything to be perfectly explained. DON'T TAKE HIM
Dr. Spivey gives interesting lectures and has a good sense of humor, but it is very hard to do well in his class. The grades come from in-class written essays and exams, both of which he grades very tough. If you are wanting to make an A in your humanities class, I would not recommend taking philosophy with Spivey.
Loved professor spivey, every class was a lecture and honesty his class is easy, as long as you study. I made flash cards for all of his quizzes and always made As, however, dont slack or miss even one term because I somehow lost a couple flash cards so on my midterm I made a C and even though I had As on everything else, I still made a B :(
As a freshmen, this was the worst professor I ever had. He repeats himself a lot and also contradicts himself constantly. He will say one thing and go back and say another, very confusing! He also is such a tough grader! Having him in class and online was very frustrating.
I am currently taking Professor Spivey's World Religions class, and all I can say is beware. The expectations and guidelines that he sets are contradictory, and unreasonable. I feel that there has been a lot of teaching myself in this class, and when I do look to him for guidance, it is met with unclear instructions rather than helpful information.
I was warned by other students that had him to be careful taking this course. I loved this class. You gain so much knowledge about other world religions and really makes you think. You HAVE to read your book and make sure you do his discussions every day. Also, be humble when he critiques your responses. Overall, good class and would take again!
I loved Mr. Spivey! He really cares about what he teaches and you can tell he is very passionate about it. Tests and quizzes were easy as long as you listen in class and take notes.
