did well in class, but had to earn it

Not a good lecturer-stops mid-sentence, loses track of thought, has a hard time communicating himself. Most people in his class are always confused and lost.
Have had 2 psych classes with Dr Watkins- both were very educational. I enjoy his teaching- he does tend to meander through lecture, but keeps on track with power point. Enthusiastic about research- nice guy. I got 4.0's in both classes, but had to work.
Kind of talks about nothing during the class period...for the ENTIRE quarter. He grades pretty harshly, too.
Did not like him at all. He does not give study guides and the work/tests are extremely hard-lot of information to study. His teaching style is a little scattered. I wouldn't recommend him for a class.
Was not happy or positive! Teacher very difficult, had to work my tail off for a 2.0
Very tough exams. Teaches very well, but pulls questions out of his ass for tests. Very tough. He is a good guy though.
IF you do not like him it is mostly because you are not an effective studyier. Sure it's a lot of work but this is college--good luck in grad school.
He is a tough instructor and his tests are difficult, but I felt that he really tried to be fair in grading. He uses powerpoint for lecture and gives you a lecture guide to take notes on. Normally when he tells a story it is to help bring home a point.
While the tests were difficult, I always felt that he was there to help us students if we needed it. It was hard work, but that is expected, it's college. I also found him to be very friendly.
Hard class.
If you wish to pursue graduate school he is one of the few professors in the department that will prepair you. If you're willing to work hard in the class there is no reason you can't receive a 4.0.
He is an ****. Yeah he may be helpful if you want to go to grad school because he is really smart but he doesn't have to be so egotistical.
You should go into this class with the understanding that it is very difficult. And it is, but if you are going to graduate school as one apparently must to do anything in the field of psychology, Watkins' class is great preparation. As always, go to class evryday, get all extra credit he offers, and have a simple, yet enjoyable research study.
You already know the class is a big fat PITA, but this man is so degrading towards other faculty, insults students, picks favorites, and belittles anyone who isn't his pet, that its disgusting. All 10 weeks of him were listening to how great HE and HIS research is (happiness) and if you didn't have the right teacher for 309, then you will fail. I didn't come close to failing, and I did learn a lot, but his attitude makes him unbearable.
Happiness and Positive Psych is obviously Watkins' little baby.. so just take what he tells you about it, memorize it word for word, and you'll do fine on the tests. Do not try to be creative, just write what he says exactly or you won't get credit. Figure out his system and you'll get a 4.0.
has no concept of learning/testing. Teaches new concepts and expects you to function at graduate level instantly. Tests inconsistent format from one exam to the next, so you don't know how to prepare, or waht is expected of you. Lectures lack focus and clarity. Verbose.
Detail oriented. Superiority complex. Unclear when answering questions. Overall, I am unwilling to take ANY classes taught by him in the future.

This was the second class I had with Dr. Watkins, his Happiness and positive psychology class was just as tough as his emotion class. He is a challenging professor so I would not recommend taking his classes unless you are really interested in the subject or really want to challenge yourself.
He is a really, really bad teacher. He thinks he is GOD.
This professor is IMPOSSIBLE to get ahold of for my online class. I had to complain to the distance education office before getting any responses back from him. After the complaints, he had an almost rude reply. Would not recommend him as a professor to anyone
It's clear that he loves psychology and doing research, but he's a little too serious about it. The only way to get a good grade is so study freaking hard, and then its easy. Don't take him as a teacher if you don't plan on working hard.
Dr. Watkins tries to be friendly and makes jokes. He is however a tough grader, and the tests are pretty intense. He always refers to his gratitude and happiness studies which you will inevitably become sick of hearing about. Overall a fairly average Professor.
Go to class! He really likes people who go to class and you will be rewarded for it with what he calls "curve busters" (extra credit). The tests are hard, so study... mostly memorization. Memorize the lectures and read and you will do fine. He usually give a good layout of the test a day or two before he gives it. Overall the class was good.
Had him for 309, 313&340. Pretty tough. Go to class! You can get quite a few e.c. points. Plus if you copy lecture you've got a big portion of his tests down. NEED TO READ BOOK. His test questions on the book are hard! He assigns a lot of work and doesn't like complaining. Gratitude psych is his baby. You'll get sick of hearing about it.
He is definitely the most challenging teacher that I have ever had. IF you are going to take his 313 take 309 from him. i didn't do that and kinda was behind even though I 4.0 309 with Barnes. His tests are fairly easy if you study. He is very strict with the research paper though. But I learned a lot.
If you have ANY OTHER CHOICE do NOT take this class from him. This guy has a major ego problem and no matter how hard you work it will never be good enough. He will even mark you down for things you did and say you did not do it when you are standing right there showing him his mistake, and he wont fix it. Save yourselves! Take a Kolts class! :D
I took Watkins for Scientific Principles of Psychology. His lectures are clear and he is very strait-forward about what he expects his students to know (which I personally thought was helpful). He tests on the reading material he assigns so if it isn't read and read well tests scores show it. Overall he is a very good, challenging teacher.
I think that he is a good teacher, but he does expect alot form his students! so you have to be on the ball and be willing to put alot of work into his class to get an A but i have learned alot form him!
He is a jerk & joke. He doesn't grade papers forever, and then when you get all your papers back, they are marked down because he maybe preferred more elaboration on a point. Of course, you don't know this until it is too late. He is rude, doesn't return calls or e-mails, and expects way too much from each student. I'm a 4.0 student. Got a 2.1 here
He is a great teacher, and I learned a lot from him. I am interested in taking more classes from him in the future. He expects you to be in class and to do the reading, if you do that you will be fine. This guy knows what he is talking about and gets you interested in the things he is teaching you.
go to class and study. you actually have to work for a good grade! i still didn't get a great grade, but i could tried harder too. don't blow off the tests!
Watkins is a great professor. He is very clear about what he expects and teaches in a way that everyone can understand. He tests the domain very well so if you know the info 70% you are going to get a 70% on the test. Have great attendance and skim the book and you'll do great in his class. I highly recommend!
My 1st class I took with Watkins was his ONLINE ABNORMAL PSYCH 302. His participation is selfom & there are little slides. There is ALOT of work for this class. For each chapter there is a test & written paper required. There is also an INTENSE final at the end. He grades very HARSHLY. Finishing a paper you might think its an A & get back a C.
Do not take his Abnormal Psych class, you don't learn much of anything because you are so worried about getting the correct answers on tests! It's way too much work for a 5 credit class! His Psych313 was not nearly as bad, although the tests were hard, but he did grade fairly.
Do not take his online Abnormal Psych Class. Grades papers harshly. Tests are very hard. Final is ridiculous. (200 difficult questions in 2 hours.) You have to write a long paper and do a test every week. My GPA is 3.7. He brought down my GPA to 2.6! AVOID THIS GUY!
As noted to me by someone when i was enrolled only a few weeks in Dr. Watkins online Abnormal class, "this class is notoriously hard." I brushed this comment off thinking that the person was over exaggerating. However, this was not the case Dr. Watkins is notoriously hard. Do not take his online abnormal class if you dont have too.
I took Ab Pscy on line with Dr Watkins. I am a 4.0 student and I learned a great deal in his class. On the other hand, his involvement was minimal and when I did contact him for clarity on something very obviously wrong, he never responded. I worked hard, got results (A) and learned a great deal, but it was not presented in a repectful way.
Very opinionated and makes test very hard to pass. If you do not believe what he says then you also do not do well in his class.
material you have to learn isn't hard- it's actually very interesting. However, I've had computer issues with his online class and he showed no mercy and is very unwilling to help. He words questions on the test and modules to confuse students, I'm convinced. He doesn't seem like a professor who strives to see his students succeed.
Happiness and Positive Psych...wasn't very happy or positive about the class. From the get go I did not enjoy the way Watkins presented his info and taught the class. Lots of notes and lecturing. He also wouldn't post his slides online. If you study for his tests you should do alright but they are heavily weighted with little room for error.
Watkins' classes are hard, there is no doubt about that, but it's because he actually wants you to learn. If you are not willing to do the work, then you should not take his classes. I did very well, but I studied constantly. He is also willing to email you the slides if you ask. If you want to learn something, I highly recommend him.
Like everyone else has said, avoid Abn. Psych online. His "study guide" was basically a letter saying don't email me with any questions because I can't be bothered. Had a girl email me asking for clarification on the objective of an assignment because he would not clarify his directions when she asked him. Does not care about student success.
Watkins makes us learn the material; however, I did not know at the time that he is extremely unhelpful. If he cares about student success he does not show it. I worked hard in this class and earned my grade, but his teaching left a lot to be desired. I'm sure he's a lovely individual but should stick to research rather than teaching.
This was one of my first classes taken through EWU and to say disappointing is an understatement. I wrote between 8-10 pages papers weekly and would receive 27/30. When I would ask Dr. Watkins questions, his answers would be unclear or disrespectful. I will never take another class from this Professor.
Dr. Watkins is an amazing professor. I can't believe he has so many negative comments here. This is college, it isn't supposed to be easy. He challenges you and wants you to actually LEARN. I will walk away from his class remembering way more than I have any other psych class. I believe he has found his path in life, which is teaching others.
I have never had him for a traditional class setting but his online was CRAZY! 2 "quizzes" (30 detailed questions) as well as a 8-10 page paper every week. His lectures were about 10-15 min long. He gave little feedback if you didn't get a perfect on your paper. His midterm and final are cumulative so you have to study!
This professor is the worst professor I have had at Eastern. The tests are absolutely ridiculous, be sure to memorize EVERY SINGLE statistic and graph in lecture as well as the book. He quizzes on every single percentage. Also, everything he says is "correct" so don't expect to have your own opinion on the matter. I recommend NOT taking his course
Prepare to memorize every statistic and every name attached to every single study. Can't argue with him if you feel you were wrongly graded on something. MUST read the book, even if he downplays its importance on tests. I suggest attending every class because he sometimes gives "pop quizzes" which are basically free points.
In class work/lecture is about 10% review of 309 & 90% how he wants you to write the research paper. If you want to get anything more than a C on your 120 and 140 pt papers DONT miss class, he gives exactly what he expects in the paper during lectures, notes should be labeld by sect of paper. APA crucial, learn it, get manual, bad APA bad grade
Been in school now for 5 years 20 some classes 20 some professors. By far the hardest professor I have ever encountered. If you want a challenge he's the right professor, if you must take this class with him prioritize his assignments as #1! Be very thorough on your work or you won't pass, don't take your lit search lightly.
Poor online implementation. I am senior, 3.7+ GPA, & very happy with most EWU courses in-person & online. His test bank was provably riddled with many errors. Average 1-3+ errors in test bank per quiz, and 12% per mid-term & final each, & wouldn't fix many even proven. Outdated textbook. I love tough professors if logical & reasonable, he wasn't.
Dr. Watkins makes you work hard for your grade as all professors really should.
A ridiculous amount of reading for a 5 credit class. If you do not read the entire textbook, you will not pass. He asks questions in such a way to make sure you do not do well if you don't agree with everything he says. Does not help at all when you email him and replys are very rude. The final was insane. I believe he does not wish for you to pass
I felt that because I took this class from Dr. Watkins I actually learned something of value. It makes me wish I had taken more classes from him.
His lectures online are extremely dry and hard to listen to when taking an online class. There is a substantial amount of reading, you read the whole book over the quarter, that takes a lot of time. He gives plenty of filler material for clarity, because of that it's hard to know what he'll tear one.
Positive Psych: BRING FLASHCARDS EVERY DAY TO TAKE ALONG WITH NOTES. There will be lists and definitions to memorize for the test. If you put them on flashcards as you are learn them, it will make tests SO much easier. Do not snooze off when reading the book either, recall info after every page for recall practice. Challenging-but-rewarding class.
Consistent with other reviews it seems like this professor both didnt care and wanted students to fail. Pretty sure I was one of the only people with a decent grade. I do not recommend. Fortunately I graduated, unfortunately there seems to be a trend of not so good professors at this school. Everything is recycled from quizlet, tells you alot.
Very overwhelming class altogether, but is doable. Be sure to read everything he assigns and watch all lectures. They will be on the midterm (100 q's) and the final (200 q's). Know the "vicious cycles." Don't skimp on the weekly essay questions. Mine were anywhere from 7-10 pages long. Flashcards were helpful!
Horrible professor. He does not care whether you pass or fail and he will not help you along the way. Keep up with slides. Class is based on four tests and two other assignments. He lets his TA watch over for tests and numeros people have phones out during exams. Brags about having hardest exams at EWU. Run away. No good teacher.
Definitely read the book and his assignments are difficult, i wouldn't recommend taking him for anything. I tried to do assignments to boost my grade but he wants you to fail. I know college is hard but DAMN!
Absurd amount of homework. Will give you bad grades to force you to do the ton of extra credit just to pass. Avoid like the plague if you can. Boring lectures.
This clown is pretty funny in a bad way. He takes all his quiz questions from the quizlet website because he is either too lazy or stupid to think of questions himself. When you take quizzes, just keep a window open to quizlet and you'll find the answers there, word for word! Eastern is great at keeping lame professors on the payroll.
Fairly consistent with other reviews - weekly quizzes can be found on quizlet - go in depth on the essay questions - Tests are pretty hard - seems like you get tested on the most minuscule details of the reading. I would take again if I HAD TO, but has fairly clear grading criteria.
WORST prof I've ever had. Test questions are worded poorly/confusing-grades the essays tough, but hardly gives feedback as to what you did wrong. Rude and unhelpful when you email him with questions. Gives little guidance for what is on midterm and final- and you have to pay $30 (each) to take the mid and final proctored on campus.
The class is doable, but it sucks. The teacher doesnt do much teaching. Its on you to read a massive textbook and write 7-10 pages every week about it. You also take two quizzes a week (answers on quizlet). The final and midterm are worth a ton and are very difficult. He also makes students pay 30 dollars just to take his bad tests. Bad class.
Uncaring, unsympathetic, will not assist you with any needs outside of classroom and does the bare minimum of meeting students needs in the class room setting. He does it for the pay check. He charges $30 to even take the final test. Run away!
took online unaware about having to go to campus for the final and midterm & had to pay 30 dollars for each. he had 2 quizzes a week each 30 questions over 2 chapters on top of that you have 4-9 essay questions that have to be very long for him to give you a good grade. Assignments are all due at 5 pm its terrible & overwhelming amount of work.
Watkins definitely makes you earn your grade in his classes, but he is a good lecturer and you will end class really knowing the material well which I think is the point of taking a class. He is tough and you absolutely need to be in class in order to do well in his classes which are based heavily on exam scores and the exams aren't easy.
Professor Watkins is rather rude and lacks empathy for his students. As for course material, what we learned about was great, but would have been better with ANYONE else. We were told not to ask questions about the material, as it's like "asking him to give us the answers". I needed clarification on some of the material and could not get any.
I LOVE psychology and was SO excited to take abnormal psych. Prof Watkins has made this such an unenjoyable experience. TONS of homework and 60+ pages of reading every 5-6 days, and he is an extremely tough grader. I put in HOURS of work on essay questions and barely got a B. Very unapproachable and I have not gotten ANY feedback from him.
Due to COVID, his class moved to an online format. Two PP lectures totaling less than 90 minutes together, and 34 pages of reading material, his first test was worth 170 points for 30 questions, with a majority of the points being in 5 short answer questions two being worth 24. His autobi...I mean psych book required for the course is a bad joke.
Poorly written tests. Often see a 6-12% bump just because half the class can't figure out what he's asking. Tests are insanely difficult. Impossible to get feedback from. He even admits on the regular that he has a hard time "staying on the trail" during lectures. Belongs in research, not in school.
He asks lots of lecture questions and never answers them. He doesn't know how to make an exam, he made 9 questions on one diagram, which he only explained for 2 minutes in lecture. He believes he is an amazing professor, he shouldn't even have the right to teach. He isn't willing to help, zoom meetings are one sided and pointless.

I am a third year student at EWU and I have never dropped a course before. I wrote 3 pages to answer his 4 questions he had and was given 11/40 and when asking for clarification he told me I just didnt understand. His extra credit is movies that are not available on any streaming service. He does not make any effort to help you understand.
Doesn't actually know how to teach presents chapters upon chapters of information without really giving you an idea of what the test will look like, then complains that the students aren't working hard when the median grade is failing for his four tests. Course is far too tough for a soft science, where half the definitions are unique to his class.
This professor is the worst I've had the displeasure of dealing with. I usually get really good grades, but I honestly thought I might fail this class. He gives awful, or no feedback. Nothing I could write on his many essay questions was good enough. He never said ONE positive thing to me. I would NEVER take a class from him again.
best way to describe his teaching is he tells you what to learn then you teach yourself by reading it in the booking you are having trouble teaching yourself & clearly struggling he just tells you to do more in-depth when reading. dont take the class he is aware many people do not like him & write terrible reviews but he does nothing to fix that
Worst class I have taken. Has a hard time getting information across in his *dry* lectures. He gave the class a 30 page research paper and tested us on it without teaching us what it meant. He researches/publishes papers on happiness. He had every student write a paper on that topic. Students essentially do research FOR HIM while paying tuition
Dr. Watkins was an awesome professor. In class, you were only graded on tests and research participation (which had alternatives if you wanted). However, his lectures are highly comprehensive. So honestly just show up to class and study a little bit and you're golden. He's funny, and just a really nice professor. I would absolutely take him again.
Total tool. Forces you to buy his book and then he quotes himself. No emphasis on any research outside of his own microcosm.
This guy only gives test in this class and nothing else. You have to read his own book and it very religious heavy. You have multiply Listing items on the test were you have to write out 4+ things for each. This class is hard to pass and I will never take him again. Oh did I mention their is no notes either!
Professor is nice, will just have to work hard for your grade. It is based all on quizzes/tests, most of which are not open book or open note so be prepared to study a lot! No papers or assignments. He does offer up to 60 points extra credit. He curves quiz/test grades and he curved my final grade. I earned a B+ but he gave me an A for the class
Philip Watkins provided little to no guidance on what to learn for the course, and instead required us to read from the textbook for most of the information we needed for the tests. The amount of detail and understanding he expected us to know was completely absurd. Philip would typically post 1 video lecture per week that was around 10 minutes.
Do yourself a favor and avoid him at all cost. He only posts a 5-10 min video per chapter, he then leaves you learn 99.99% of the material from the textbook which he wrote... Ive never left a review on a teacher but i have to warn you about this one. Be prepared to have a no social life and a horrible quarter if you take his class.
Super chill professor! At first I thought he would be hard due to other ratings, but he is actually really nice and easygoing. He is funny in class and gives good lectures! be prepared to study hard, his exams are tough-ish! Textbook required, a lot from textbook on exams.
Right now I am barely passing and honestly might have to withdraw from this class and lose my scholarships. He expects you to memorize EVERYTHING from the lecture and textbook and you can't use any notes. If you want your GPA to drop, to cry after every test, and to contemplate dropping out then this is the course for you!
Professor Watkins's lectures were organized, interesting, and slower-paced, making everything understandable which was extremely beneficial for later studying. The class load had 5 tests (one every other week), research participation, and extra credit. I highly recommend this class unless you have a hard time with attendance or studying.
Just don't. This professor is horrible. Avoid this professor at all costs unless you are okay with failing.
He wasn't really caring of his students. I can tell he was just someone who posted lectures and if you didn't do well then it was on you. Like he was not willing to help you out. I had an online class with him and he would literally post 12 lectures in one week or 5 or 6. I suggest to anyone who is wanting an online class to not take it from him.
I really liked professor Watkins as a person. He was very kind and helpful but as a professor not the best I have ever had. The entire class you have 5 tests and that's it. No other way to get points do poorly and you're screwed. The class is interesting but it's hard to get an A or B if you do bad on a test or two. Good guy okay professor.
I'm glad he retired. This professor was awful and his lectures were simply just reading slides. It's like he was yapping to yap. I do not recommend it. He was also not helpful.
Professor Watkins can be hit-or-miss. Lectures are decent, but exams are tough and heavily textbook-based. Attendance is a must. Unstuck AI helped me prepare and stay on top of the material when I struggled.
