Philippe is fabulous! You will love studying French with him. He's Parisian, and adds his personal experience to make the classes more interesting. The focus is on speaking and understanding the language. Also covers grammar & vocabulary. Just keep up with the HW and participate and you'll have an A
You will learn some french, and he is the real thing (aka, a frenchman) but watch out for this guys moodiness. He can be a real jerk somedays, and downright mean other days. But... that isn't to say he's not an OK teacher. He's just a bit moody sometimes. Maybe that was just my semester.. dunno.
He is one if not the worst teachers i have ever come across, if you dont suck up to him or basically if he doesnt like you, you will not passs this class!HE is extremely unclear of the work at hand, and makes you feel stupid for asking questions!I suggest you take someone else!!! RUN!!!
Do not take this guy! He is the moodiest and worst french professors i have ever come across, i was geniunely interseted in learning french, but after patto, im not sure. He is very rude, and it is true, if you dont kiss his ass you will NOT pass, sum guy in my class got all f's on the quizes and passed becuz he took patto shopping! What the hell?!
All my other language classes I have passed easily, but this teacher basically told me that I have to be in his class to learn his language and would not take a medical excuse because I didn't take him shopping or buy him coffee, even though I already knew all of the material and passed his tests, he failed me.
This guy's an ass! He doesn't teach...he only likes superficial people and people who kisses his ass. He doesn't quantify grades...basically he gives you don't earn....****!
His homework assignments are often unclear. He was really moody and nasty with students because words weren't said or prononuced correctly. He would get upset because of low class participation. Students didn't participate because they're afraid of being ridiculed in front of the class! It's immensely obvious he favors other students more.

his hwk are unclear he gey mads you dont do the hwk but sometimes he doesnt even check he doesnt follow the book his test dont follow the study guide that he give you i spent hours memerize tons verbs that werenot on the test n the ones he didnt even mention were on test, this class its easy there no pressure if you r taking 18 unit.( has bad atitu
Patto can be a little moody - but I didn't see any kiss-up issues w/him. He was fair. If you keep up w/the assigns, pay attn, and participate in class you'll get a good grade, simple as that. I went to france shortly after the class was done and rec'd many compliments on my accent and basic conversation abilities, e/thing I learned from his class
hes a cool teacher i enjoy his class.
Mr. Patto is a very good teacher. He's enthusiastic, and loves to see students grow. He will get mad if people slack off, but will help you if you're making an effort. Loves to teach about the culture, not just the language. Wants everyone to be friends, so we have meetings at restaurants for some classes. I highly recommend his course.
Before taking him last semester I had read the posted comments on his class and the majority were negative... I'm glad I decided to form my own opinin of him and his teaching technique. Patto is a great professor, he makes his class fun and shares cute stories of his personal experience with a foreign language. TAKE HIS CLASS...YOU'LL LOVE IT!

He is a very nice guy but very unorganized! Half of the assignments he posts online and half are given in class. It isn't always clear what is expected of the students. You must study ALOT to succeed. Oh yeah it helps if bring a chocolate croisant to class.
I hated taking French 101 with Patto. He jeopardize my grade because he never said we were having a written final exam but an oral exam instead. But, guess what? He gave us the written test anyways without prior notice. And the oral exam was never given to the students. Beware, if you need to take this class never take it with him.
I looked forward to this class! Patto made it fun. He shared interesting things about French culture and encouraged everyone to talk in class. We used the book most classes, and he gave us fair warning about assignments and tests. If you do the Quia getting an "A" is EASY. I can only guess that those complainers were sleeping in class!
Beware, he told us in class that he leaves comments for himself. He suggested Quia (online workbook) as extra study work at first, then made it all required 3 days before the last day of class. At first you won't see how disorganized he is but it'll become apparent quickly. He's a good guy but a horrible teacher. I'm going to Mesa to avoid him.
Great professor! must admit was afraid from all the bad comments i read from here, but then after i started the class i realized he was a good teacher. All I advise is to be respectful, study for test, and do quia.
He was a fun professor I learned a lot
I hated this class!!!!!! he made up a lot of field trips that had nothing to do with the class and he almost gave me an F just because i didnt go to them they had nothing to do with the class he lost a lot of my homework and for that he also gave a low grade i would not take this techer
I really liked this class. He encouraged everyone to talk to each other and was big on pronounciation. I enjoyed this class. He is a little moody when no one is studying but if you do study its an easy A!
One of the best teachers I have ever had. Take him, he is passionate for life, you learn more than french in his class and he is a great person with a beautiful heart
im suspicious Patto may be writing comments for himself. If there is anyone in my french 101 class who really likes him ive never talked to them. most of us think hes not a very good teacher, he spends much too much time talking about himself(in english) and he like to email us homework assignments on saturday afternoon to be turned in on monday!
He has to be writing comments himself. The class was mostly spent with him talking about himself, in English. Also he made us go to a cafe because he wanted to bring business to his friend that owned it. We didn't do any French while there and he guilted people into buying food and drinks and leaving a tip. I would not recommend this teacher.
he is not a very nice teacher, he is unfair with grading, he talks mostly about himself instead of something that would benefit the class. there is a lot of favoritism going on specially with the male side of class. he's very negative and very rude. i would not reccomend this teacher, i say he should be replaced.
thank god we had a t.a.
Funny to see that people call him moody-to me and my friends his nickname was "Mr.Moody." Patto shows up late to class, interupts the T.A., leaves early, and loves to talk about his personal life. He WILL take you to a cafe and lead you to believe its french-ITS NOT!! Just an overpriced cafe. Overall, he's a nice guy with good intentions. BE Aware!
I took the class with some prior knowledge. I got 100% on all of the tests and did 100% of the quia (which turned out to be a waste of money) and extra credit, showed up every day and I ended up getting a B in the class because I didnt do these 3 assignments he emailed us because they seemed like a total waste of time. he wouldnt explain either
the last day of class, he told us that there were a lot of us who failed. he said that it wasn't just our class, but students in all of his classes. that is a really bad sign when all students are failing. in this case, it's the professor doing something wrong, not the students. he was very inconsistent which isn't ok when teaching a language!
I took him last spring for 101, I did pass the class thank god but I thought Patto was a very bad teacher, disrespectful to students, and really doesn't care very much to help students do well, always blames the student for not understanding the material instead of considering maybe he didn't teach it very well, maybe that's why no one understands
great professor... Dont know why people hate on him... take him and you be the judge...
I'm taking his class this semester, and I think he's really funny eventhough his class is so hard to understand. Lol
I thought he was a great teacher, and I don't understand all the complaints. No foreign language is going to be an easy subject. It will take a lot of work. As long as you keep up with the home and participate in class, you'll be fine. He only loses patience with people who deserve it by being too lazy to do the work. He's hilarious, too.
This is a language class, its not supposed to be easy, you are learning something completely new. He is a GREAT teacher, he explains France in depth, and makes a 3 hour class entertaining. If you attend class, participate and complete your assignments you will pass the class, its not rocket science, its an interactive language class.
Prof. Patto is a great teacher. He is always there for his students.
Wonderful teacher!!
He's a great teacher who expects his students act like what they are, ADULTS. If you're doing the homework and paying attention in class, you will succeed! :)
I would recomend taking a French class with Patto for anyone who is passionate about French. If you are interested in French culture, learning useful insights into the actual dialect and having an interesting prof, then attend the class, do the work and gain an expanded view while learning the language. He is truely a wonderful teacher.
Wonderful teacher with a wonderful heart. He is so polite and he cares his students. He loves what he teaches. If you want to learn French by not getting bored take his class. He is my best French teacher.....
Professor Patto is an excellent French professor. He teaches according to his own real life experience and makes the class interesting. It is a 5 credit course so there is some work involved, but you are learning a new language so that's a given. I really enjoyed his class and have learned a lot from him.
It is not taught at a beginner level. He is nice sometimes, and then moody other times.
He's super enthusiastic about the French language and humorous about the culture. Homework's online, as are most tests. Skim the book before class to be prepared if he calls on you. Participate as much as you can, and be polite. He appreciates enthusiastic students who show signs that they are trying. Do so, and you will receive a good grade.
All-around great guy. His class moves a little too fast, and I think he assigns more assignments than what's necessary for learning the material. Other than that, he teaches a really fun class. Patto has a wonderful personality.
Great teacher and a really fun class! Looking forward to more semesters of french because of this professor :)
He's a really AWESOME professor & super enthusiastic about the French language. Homework's online, as well as most tests. Participate as much as you can. At first I wasn't sure if I wanted to take his class because of all the negative comments. They were TOTALLY WRONG! Please don't listen to the negative stuff people say, he truly is GREAT! :)
M. Patto is one of the best instructors I've ever had. The first day of class I knew nothing of the French language and thanks to his attention to detail and passion to teaching, I am able to understand French after only 2 semesters. I am a female student and I appreciate how respectful he is of all students. Honestly, top notch.
All he negative critics are right. My biggest compliant though is that he taught until Unit 5 and when I transfered to Mesa because I didn't wanna have him as an insructor I was 65 p. behind! I checked with all campuses around Cuyamaca, SWC,Grossmont, Mira Costa and they all stop after the Passe compose. He is not good and lazy!
Patto is an excellent teacher. He engages the class with humor and high energy. There is never a dull moment with Patto. I had him for French 101 this semester and I am glad I chose him! The class is easy if you pay attetion, participate, and are fond of the French language (and of course do all your work.) A+ for Patto!
Just do the work, be ontime to class, do not miss class, participate and you will do well. He gives you the tools to help you learn French. Use them and you will pass the class. I got an A in the class and I took it as Honors.
I had Patto for my first semester and all the negative comments are right. He is a horrible teacher, very desorganised, unclear, changes rules on you constently, talks about his personnal life in class, shows up late, unhelpfull, and asks for money for the club even if u dont wanna participate! Super lazy too & stopped at unit5 instead of 7.
Excellent professor. Very helpful, very entertaining, and very fun class. Show up, do the work (which isn’t hard!) use common sense and you'll be just fine. Patto is very friendly and always ready to help. He calls on EVERYONE so be prepared! I honestly don’t see how anyone can have a bad time in this class if they actually try.
I had a wonderful time learning. Foreign language took me time to learn but once I had the basics down (with practice & study) I have been able to actually communicate w/others. He inspires so many students and is passionate about teaching. He cares & that definitely conveys. I observed the students who won't study are the complainers. Grow up!!!
I read these reviews & took the class because there are more pos than neg reviews. Bad idea. He is very moody & would say "quit complaining" when I came to him with concerns about my grade. You wont find out the status of your grade til the class is over. He always talked about how more than half of the class will fail. Dont follow the hype.
Huge cultural barrier (despite the fact that hes lived in the U.S. for over 30 years). Tells you translate grammatically incorrect English sentences to French. The only people who seemed to be successful in the class were people who have taken a French, Italian, or Spanish class before.
Had an amazing time in this class. I will never forget Professeur Patto and the help he gave me. Any language is not easy, but with plenty of reading and online homework, you will at least have the confidence to answer questions on the exams. Participate, study, homework and passing your exams is all you need. Same rules apply to any course.
this teacher was not a good teacher at all. I do not reccomend it to anyone who wants to learn french we never had a structured agenda we did more partner verbal work than actual writing or reading which was needed when it came to the in class Midterm & Final. He is very moody and since french is his native language he expects everyone to understand
i took his 101 n 102 french class. I don't recommend this prof to anyone at all. he is too disorganized. if you are new at learning french, you are going to get C or F. ONLY people that ALREADY KNOW french would rate this prof as good.
Do not take patto! Dont take this classing thinking "oh if others failed it I'm sure I can pass it" only way of passing this class is to be in his fav list, lot of homework online and material is uncleared
Took the class as a filler. Not at all was I interested in French but wow, now I am! Loved this class and the professor. Online work amount is reasonable. We focus more on speaking than writing. While the tests do have some writing, it's all based off vocabulary words and the worksheets he gives out. Fun teacher, good positive energy, very helpful.
Very easy class, even by City College standards. Pronounces Chamonix incorrectly (as do many Parisians). Otherwise, good instructor. Had to ask him for supplemental materials to improve the text--- would have been nice if he had volunteered. If he could remember that he's teaching adults, not high school, the class might have even more value.
Took him for French 2 and he expects you to know EVERYTHING from previous textbook. If you took French 1 at a different campus or with different professor, DONT TAKE! He is very helpful to get you everyone in the class, but not easy at all!
Patto wastes the majority of class time talking about his personal life. He is useless at assisting students with pronunciation and answers his email during class (we all saw him doing this on the projection screen). I learned more French on my own.
I loved his class. His approach at teaching was quite entertaining and it had the students engaged. Had a great time in his class, learned a lot.
I loved Professuer Patto! He is excellent in helping students learn French and makes the class fun. He focuses more on learning how to speak French and aids students who need help with pronunciation. He makes the class fun with videos and he's funny. I recommend taking this class because he shows that he cares about students.
I love Professor Patto and how he helps his students that demonstrate that they enjoy the language. If you really enjoy learning French and put in the effort to take everything into use of the language in the future then you will do great in the class. Prof Patto will help you through the process of learning the materials very well.
Listen to me. Heed my warning. Do not skip class. DO NOT SKIP CLASS AT ALL! I mean -at all-. Maybe once is ok, other than that don't do it. He won't give you a C, he will give you an F. After trying my ass off and getting As on almost everything, he failed me for attendance. He's done it before, won't tell you he's going to do it. 3 skips-F.
In the beginning he was really funny but he changed. He gives quizzes regularly and does not grade them by points, you can have missed the exact same questions as the person next to you and you get a worse grade which isn't right to me. Don't assume you are passing, I did, because I did ALL of the work, yet I got an F for some reason.
I loved taking French with Prof. Philippe. Il est un professeur extraordinaire! He was always available to talk if you needed anything and he was always telling us stories about himself. You will do good if you volunteer even if you don't have a clue what we're doing, just try! I really wish he would teach 102!
He made French fun! No exams (except for an easy final), all homework is done online (and if you mess up, he resets it for you), speaks clearly and clarifies when students have questions. A very easy A and you learn a lot! The only thing that may be hard for some is participation and attendance. . .you must go to class.
He is all about making sure you know how to speak and not so much worried about your conjugation skills. Not big on tests. Show up, participate, do the homework online and you will pass. The end.
Professor Patto is unprofessional in class as he does not know how to control his mood. He becomes very frustrated with students who have not taken French before and has no patience that is required to teach a foreign language. He has his favorites who either speak French or have taken it before and the rest of you are left to fend for yourselves.
Be prepared to do a lot of homework online with Google/translate. Really you are pretty much on your own because you won't learn it in class! If you can work in a group on it. His syllabus says if you miss 3 classes you automatically fail well I missed 2 and failed despite doing the homework. He gets upset if the class isn't learning and pop quiz.
This professor's teaching methods are not for beginners. He rushes through a lot of material with little explainations. He is also very moody and lacks patience with those that aren't comprehending. He does not take well to constructive criticism. Be prepared to refer to google for nearly everything and possibly a tutor. Do not recommend!
First if you plan to take a language class for the first time do not take a summer course. Prof. Patto is awesome, easy going and very funny, the thing is that there is too much material for a summer course and he just pushes you to learn it all, he gets frustrated if you have no common sense but who doesn't? do ur HW , be in class & participate
I have taken many classes at the san Diego community college which has great professors, but unfortunately, Professor Patto is not one of them. I have the sense to recognize my mistakes when I fail a class, which have never been due to a bad teacher but I passed this class due only to my own efforts and help from other students. Worst Professor.
I would not RECOMMEND this class to anyone in general! Especially if its your first French Class!!! He would just go on speaking french without no type of translations! Sometimes he would get frustrated when a student wont get the material. When a student would struggle he wouldn't bother to help him or her he would simply skip him.
Class is textbook exercises and practicing with classmates. Online HW mandatory, required constant FR dictionary. Skip a day and you'll be lost. He doesn't teach in traditional, methodical manner but plunges you in. You will feel confused if not on your game. Patto has a big heart and gets annoyed when people don't learn or are clearly being lazy.
I recommend you not to take this teacher unless you know French. This teacher teaches French very fast without English translation and has lack of patience. He seem to be fed up with students who are struggling with French and not learning. This is like an advanced French class as it is beginning French class.
I took Prof. Patto for Honors French 101 and he was the best teacher I have EVER had. As long as you do your part, you will do well.
Thourough, and always gives an opportunity for extra credit. ..... Don't listen to the negative reviews about his personality. He is awesome. I recommend him 100%.
Here goes.... Professor Patto is passionate, sincere, and fair. If you are still in pubescent mode, and you need someone to hold your hand, go ask Mommy to do your homework. A's are earned. I recommend Phillipe 300%.
He is fair and consistent. He did a good job of presenting the material. I hated the homework material. You can not pick up a language by talking about it for 2 hours a day, two days a week so you must study. He did get frustrated at times but a lot of students OBVIOUSLY did not study at all. It should not take 2 weeks to learn one verb.
Great Professor. Made me fall in love with France. Very passionate and enjoys teaching, best language professor yet!
Prof. Patto was definitely a great pleasure. he was very insightful about the French culture and the language. he expects participation from students and when that does not occur he either assumes every one knows the material and holds a pop quiz or he can get frustrated. great professor definitely pushed his students to better themselves.
He's a good professor, you will learn from this course
amazing teacher
Professor P is french and he really just wants to see you try. Participate in class even if your not saying it right he pushes you to correct it. At times it can feel in embarrassming push through it and try. I cant say that enough just show that you are trying. Do the homework online and do it on time. Thought Id pass with c but passed with an A
Personally I can learn new languages pretty easily but I felt by the end of the W drop date that I hadn't learned anything. I nearly had anxiety attacks almost every week because I felt like I was a failure and that I wasn't paying enough attention to the professor even though I did. I decided that I wouldn't take it again.
Awesome teacher! This class has been one of the best experiences Ive had and he made it so much fun. Highly recommended!
Fun, informational stories Lots of homework (online; HUGE portion of final grade) plus Several time-consuming projects; Both HIGHLY advised to complete ASAP Very helpful when you need it, good listener Very encouraging and understanding; He WANTS to see you succeed so much that you dont want to let him or yourself down
I really enjoyed this class with prof. Patto. He is amazing. Participating is a major role in learning. And there is alot of that in this class. 5 thumbs to my professor.
He is very caring for his students want you to suceed but you also have to do your part missing class more than 3 times gets a little difficult to catch up other than that its pretty good just show up and participate
You need to make sure you do all the online homework on time and make flash cards to be able to memorize the vocabulary. This class does require you to have good study skills and constant participation in class. The Professor is very funny and caring, but he will call you out if he feels you are not putting your part in the class. Group activities.
I really loved taking this class! He is a Parisian native, who makes this class amazing and intereting. First, this class is based on grammar, culture, conversation and speaking. Second, quizzes are mostly based on what you learned from handouts, so make sure you won't miss class. Finally, I'm pretty sure you won't regret about taking this class.
The way he runs his class is insane, he doesnt follow the syllabus nor does he follow a lesson plan and he teaches all throughout the book sporadically. He gets very frustrated with people when they do not learn fast enough for his liking. He would also get into arguments with students in class making everyone uncomfortable.
Speaks French without translation. He is very nice but is not great at teaching.
He is a very nice person and excellent teacher. People that have a problem with him are always the ones that are failing. He cares about his students a lot and wants everyone to learn as much as possible about the culture and language. He does give a bit of homework but as long as you do all the homeworks youll pass.
He truly cares about the well being of his students. For example, he provides so many hand outs, premade flash cards and other helpful tools in order to ensure our success in his class. Overall, a very fun and interactive language class. I definitely recommend him, if youre tired of being bored to death by lectures and grammar drills.
Awesome professor! Very funny and caring.
Awesome professor! Very funny and caring. He is always willing to help you, his main goal is for his students to learn.
This Prof. really goes above to try to help you understand. He did get upse at the class once but it was for good reason we were in the last weeks of the class and the students had not been getting Être and thats because we werent doing our work so it was understandable. He welcomes mistakes and expects them because duh you are learning. Take Him!
Professor Patto is by far your best option for French. I took 101 and 102 with him. I only needed to buy 1 book for both courses. Attending is necessary, but he understands life happens. Do the hw and you will be fine. They are very easy and enjoyable there are like 7 hw only. Take him he is a sweetheart! try your best and he will appreciate it.
Great professor
Prof Patto did an excellent job of teaching beginning French 101, under difficult circumstances (fully virtual classes due to COVID-19 pandemic). He set expectations early, and gave everyone time to get their work done. He focused on communicating, not simply memorizing words and verb conjugations, and was always helpful. He made learning fun.
This was a summer 8 week class online and it was my first time taking a French class. I think that the professor did a great job adapting the class due to the Pandemic had to re-adjust the verbal lectures via zoom and it all worked out. The class is well structured and the projects are educational.
Geniune French professor with a passion for the topic and culture. Adapted well to online classes, clear instruction and work, and easy deadlines to meet.
I really enjoyed this class. I have such a passion for French and he really helped me. Always available outside of class. No tests or quizzes, just recordings with classmates. If you're a newbie French is tough! I suggest youtube videos too. Really nice guy and breaks through that French Stereotype. Take Him! Zoom isn't mandatory also ;-)
Don't listen to some of the negative posts, he is a good professor that tries his best to help you understand what is required for the class. I would definitely recommend this professor for people who do want to learn a new language because he will always be there for you and will help you beyond what is on the textbook if you are interested.
Professor Patto is great. He is very patient and helpful. You are expected to do the homework which prepares you for class. If you prepare for class, attend, and participate, you will do well and you will learn. He is understanding about life getting in the way sometimes and is available for answers. Overall the class is well organized.
I've taken French with Prof Patto both in person and remote, and they were both great courses I would recommend and take again. Patto is an effective and understanding teacher, genuinely interested in your growth.
Professor Patto was really caring. He will call you out in class but not intimidating. He takes time to go over the material. Pops in every breakout room in zoom. He is very caring and charismatic, really enjoyed the material and he always has a Parisian background in the zoom. Mostly homework, for the final it is speaking extra credit presentation
Professor Patto was really caring. He will call you out in class but not intimidating. He takes time to go over the material. Pops in every breakout room in zoom. He is very caring and charismatic, really enjoyed the material and he always has a Parisian background in the zoom. I have difficulty with languages and he really helped teach me French.
Monsieur Patto is an awesome professor who really cares about his students and makes class a fun experience. He often pops into breakout rooms to see if any one has any questions or are struggling, and corrects us politely. He has a lot of patience and makes class go smoothly every week.
Learning a new language is hard, but Prof. Patto turns the process into something fun and accessible, using lots of games and activities to take what can be frustrating and dry and turn it into something enjoyable. If you put in the time and study, attend class, and actively participate, you will do well in this class.
Professor Patto is great, he really wants you to understand French and will give you all the tools needed, if you dont succeed is because you didnt put the effort. Wish all the language professors were like him.
Philippe is an incredible human being, who truly cares about his students. Now, this care / love he has is tough, and he will require you to work very hard, but then again you're here to learn a new language, so it comes with the territory. Thus, if you're serious about learning a new language to a high standard, than he's your man.
A wonderful teacher! Upon meeting him you know he loves teaching, loves the language, and is willing to make time for students. He has first-hand experience learning new languages himself which makes him very understanding when it takes time for students to grasps a concept. Also, very funny, I find myself always smiling at his comments in class.
Phillipe Patto is a great professor; he is knowledgeable, engaging, accessible and genuinely cares about his students and their learning experiences. He will go out of his way to help you through the entire process and is understanding and willing to work with you when life happens. If you want to learn to speak French and have fun, welcome.
His class is a lot of fun and you will really learn how to speak french properly. I highly recommend it.
Professor Patto is one of the best professors I've taken so far. He is funny, easy-going, and cares about his students. My french has gotten much better thanks to him. I wish more professors were like him. I recommend him 100%.
Great professor! Funny, patient and engaging. Keeps class entertaining with stories and games to help practice vocab. Be sure to do the hw! Its easy points and he gives you multiple attempts to get a good score. He notices who participates and provides lots of tools to practice your French outside of class as well. Overall great class!
Professor Patto is an excellent professor. He teaches more than just the language, incorporating french culture, personal stories and ect. creating a unique environment for learning. French is may be a difficult for English speakers, but Prof Patto teaches in a way that wont intimidate you to speak in class and hes always there to help. 10/10
If you show a genuine interest in learning French and are willing to put in the effort, he will reciprocate and be very helpful, even outside of class. He's competent with technology and uses a lot of web-based applications so the online experience was good.
Professor is really good at replying to emails and super understanding. If you have any concerns or questions he definitely makes himself available to reach out to. He asks a lot of questions in class but dont worry about having an accent or mispronunciation because he is very understanding and helps you to pronounce things better.
He responded very quickly to all my emails and questions. Very friendly teacher and very nice course.
Taking this Professor is a definite MUST! Fun, engaging, non-threatening interactive learning style. Always thinking of new dynamic approaches to learning w/ease. Takes student input seriously. Readily available for Office Hours/tutoring. Comfortable BEST class. Learning French w/Prof' Patto stress is thrown out of the window. GREAT class.
It is so wonderful to have a professor who is kind, well-versed, intelligent, culturally sensitive, and as witty as Professor Patto. His lessons are well organized and informative. He encourages learning, and brings the beauty of French culture, in Europe, and around the world, to each class. This has been an amazing journey. He is amazing.
It's a really good class, professor Patto is funny and do everything he can to teach you French in the easiest and coolest way possible.
He's an amazing professor and I recommend you take him if you want to improve your conversational French especially, or if you are the kind of person who gets anxious and doesn't do well on tests. Instead of big tests or quizzes we do homework that he creates to help us with conjugation and understanding spoken french in addition to VHL.
Lots of homework but allows wiggle room if schedule & life situations get in the way. Listens to suggestions and answers emails. Is ready to help. 100% interactive during online lessons. Innovative and fun lessons. Is very caring and wants you to succeed. He bends over backward to help you improve. Highly recommend him. Very caring and helpful.

I loved taking French 101 with him. Homework is always given with a week to complete it. If something is unclear he'll do his best to clarify. Listens and considers student feedback always. Lectures are engaging and he's really patient.
Very nice and understanding. My last professor spoke only french from day one. He was very easy going and the class was enjoyable.
Philippe Patto is nice and straight forward. He does give a lot of homework on promenade, but late assignment is accepted. And also he give practice quizzes before quiz. I will definitely take his class again and again.
Very organized and excellent professor. He is available to reply emails and set up office hours outside of class. Always gives detailed feedback and tries his best to help students with questions or issues. I would had loved to take a 16 week class with him instead of the 8 week, that did make it slightly difficult to keep up with the course.
Loved learning every second within the class. The professor makes the lectures engaging, funny, and memorable so the language sticks within your head. Prounciation is always difficult, but he does his best to give back clear feedback on how to improve. You will learn many small facts & the nature of the French from him, besides the language itself.
Professor Patto's class was intense. I took the 8 week summer class. Professor is strict but in a good way. He means business. Highly professional and passionate. If you want to learn take his class. I wish he was teaching 2nd course in French.
Too many "group discussions" that were not organized well. He knows his French obviously but could greatly benefit from a little course restructuring as it feels redundant and tedious going to class and always doing the same thing.
Great prof and a very easy and straightforward class. Helps if you took French in high school as the course moves at a fast pace.
The most caring professor I've ever had the pleasure to learn with. Philippe is an incredible communicator and clearly explains the lessons, homework, and tests well in advance of due dates. Simply put, Philippe is the best teacher, ever!
Professor Patto is an incredible communicator. His class can be intense, but he explains things clearly and is very helpful. I found unstuckstudy great for prep - it really complemented the lessons.
He is very kind, caring, and even funny. However, he gives SO MUCH homework, and it's super tedious. It's really hard to get your grade up, and it's easy to let it plummet. I was excited to learn French, now I just feel drained. His 101 is rigorous. Don't recommend the course if you're taking four classes or not familiar with the language already.
Great teacher. A native French speaker who knows how to explain grammar and give you suggestions. I would take a class with this professor again.
Ive taken spanish & Portuguese through HS and college, I can definitely say Prof. Philippe is by far one of the best language professors I have ever taken and can not stress that enough. He's funny & always finds ways to seamlessly interconnect the lessons while presenting them in very simple ways. would rate 11/10. Very accessible out of classtoo
He made the class very enjoyable, interesting and challenging.
M. Patto provides a well structure course for learning french, and makes it fun. He uses a variety of materials online to ensure that you practice listening, speaking, reading and writing. I especially appreciated the in-person component of the class and the "games" used for learning. He provides "real world" information about French culture.
If you want to learn French this professor will move you along on that journey. Well organized, clear instructions very welcoming/accepting/appreciative to all students. Heavy on engagement and participation. Makes learning fun. He employs many different methods and tools to help the learning process. I very much recommend taking his classes.
He made learning French interesting and fun. Great professor.
instructions are unclear, and you will have to record videos of yourself. He will deduct points left and right if he believes your French accent is off. He will respond to your emails up to a point, but after that, you're on your own with 13 video assignments per week. Phillipe will grade you as if he taught you something. awful experience.
No exams, only homework! You can retry the homework as many times as you like. At the beginning, you do nearly 10-13 assignments per week; however, after week 12, the homework is reduced to help give you more time for your other classes. If it's your first time taking French, it will probably take you 10 hours a week for the first 12 weeks.
His lecture is great, and his sense of humor is awesome. Very heavy on the homework, with 10+ assignments to complete, although they are not that hard. You also need to record yourself talking. As long as you make a real effort and turn in everything on time, you can easily pass the class with an A.
Mr. Philippe is a great French teacher. His lectures are clear and engaging. He explains grammar and vocabulary in a way that's easy to follow. Although the weekly homework can be a bit heavy, the assignments themselves are not difficult. If you keep up with the work and put in effort, it's very manageable to get an A.
Took class for French 101. By assignment #3, all instructions were in French. Had to google translate the instructions alone. Teacher expects students to be fluent in French just to do the assignments in week 1. Its beginning French, not literature.
I took his French 101 class last semester at city and was pleasantly surprised by his teaching methods! I feel that he has taught me more french in four months than my high school spanish teacher managed to teach me in two YEARS. Philippe grades fairly and replies to emails quickly with great feedback. As long as you participate, you are golden!
