Outstanding professor. An expert and very knowledgable in the material discussed in class.
He is really good, he made me look at things in a dif. way. Class is easy just have to do the work, dont really have to read the books as long as u take good notes. All u need really is 2 take notes and ur set. he goes everything very well. i would take him again 4 any other class.
The Best Professor. Not only a great professor but good friend too. He is young so he can relate to his students. Just go to class, listen to his lectures, and do your essays. Grades easy. VERy easy class
cool guy
hes a great guy but he talks super fast, and there's a lot of material to cover!
Phil is extremely friendly and very helpful, he also teaches AAS 201 (race, racism, and critical thinking)which is probably more eye-opening than AAS 220 (asian american literature) and fulfills the philosophy requirement. i would definitely recommend Phil's class if you are going to take AAS 220 or 201.
Phil is a cool ass guy. Really laid-back and very helpful. His class is fun and u'll learn alot
Great professor! Very nice and very knowledgeable. You'll learn a lot if you take his class. Just do all of the assignments and you'll most likely get an A.
very good professor
He is a great professor. He sometimes makes fun of himself. He's dorkie (good way). He is extremely helpful and really tires his best to help the class understand. Hard grader when it comes to essay and final group project. He is a reasonalbe grader and a fair grader. There is extra credit. He's laid back and chill. LEctures are fun!! I LOVE THEM!!
Phil is probably one of the nicest professors on campus. He memorizes everyone's name by the second week. He'll recognize you outside of class and make small talk. He is also still a graduate student, so he understands the difficulties. But don't let that student personality fool you; he's extremely intelligent and offers tons of help. A+ Professor
NICEST PROFESSOR EVER! DOESNT EVEN YELL WHEN YOU WALK IN LATE. BEST TEACHER I HAVE HAD AT NORTHRIDGE! WISH HE WAS TEACHING ALL MY CLASSES
simply best teacher ever !
He is a very smart guy. His class was very easy because I did all the hw and studied moderately for the tests. 8 journals, 2 tests and 1 group project. Not a bad grader at all. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!!!!
This teacher it the most helpful, most understanding teacher I know. He is truly a great professor. He makes the class fun.
He is a really good teacher and really loves what he does. He is always extremely helpful and caring. As long you pay attention and come to class than it's a really cool and fun class. Definitely one of the best professors that I've had at CSUN.
He is extremely fun and very talkeative. I learned so much in his class. He very helpful and loves hearing others opinions. I admit he is very easy teacher, but his midterm isn't. So definatly study hard for that, but everything else is easy as long as you put effort into it. I highly recommend talking his class. Take it !! BEST TEACHER EVER
Like everyone here says, he truly is one of the best CSUN has to offer. He's there when you need him before, after and inbetween classes. Just have him know your name and you're in! Do the work and you'll get an A. He's made my experience at CSUN that much better. Take him! Hands down one of the best!
One of the best professors at CSUN. Highly recommend.
One of the best teachers I've had ever at CSUN. He's fun, down to earth, and can relate to every student. I learned so much more about Asian Americans in the American culture thanks to him. It's easy, but its not a breeze, you will have to work for your grade and attend events. If I were to grade this guy, he gets an A+ in my book.He also likes GH3
This is one of the nicest teachers you could have! his class is interesting! overall the class is easy but the midterms can be a little challenging.
He is a awsome teacher one of the best always entertaines the class gives many hints to the test questions also dont miss class or you will miss a lot of material
He is the best =] u need to talk him. Had for eng to the best
Cool teacher, and taught a really interesting class. Encourages group work and group discussion, so if you're a people person you may like the class.
He's a really nice guy and he knows his stuff. The class is less critical thinking and more critical understanding. There are three tests, a final project at the end, and a collection of papers/exercises throughout. Overall, it's a good class taught by a good professor, in an environment that encourages openness & making friends. I recommend it! =)
Very interesting class, I learned a lot, and it was a lot of fun. It was an easy A for me. He says that his midterms are hard, but don't believe him. As long as you go to class you can A his midterms and finals. No book needed. :) A MR.H I know you are going to read this so guess who I am; I got the Highest grade and I can't spell.
Prof Hutchison is the greatest professor at CSUN! Very fun, easy, useful, willing to help with anything other classes also. There are a few essays, journals and final. Grades pretty easy, recommand you take class for 97 & 98.
Awesome professor. first i thought it will be a boring class but i was totally wrong. There were 2 midterms, 1 research paper, 2 small response papers & 1 event response but NO final exam. All are easy work. if you wants to have fun while learning something, take this professor. Make sure to take notes of the key terms. U need it for exams!!!!
Hands down this guy is the best professor at CSUN! Took him for my summer 097 class and in the fall for 098.All i can say is to take notes and do the work and you are set. He likes to show alot of shows and movies that relate to the work. .....Hutchison will you be my dad? :)
He is AWESOME. He is enthusiastic about the subject he teaches (took 2 classes with him this semester). Midterms are fairly easy as long as you take notes on the material (he's clear about everything). This is the only class I was never absent to even though attendance isn't mandatory AND I took it on a Friday afternoon. Yeap, that good.
BEST PROFESSOR AT CSUN! THIS CLASS IS VERY EASY. TESTS ARE NOT HARD AT ALL :) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!
class consists mostly of lectures which in turn is what your tests will be on. He makes the topic very interesting though and shaped a new way of thinking in myself. He is very knowledgeable in this subject and makes it fun! 3 tests 9 journals and a group project for your final. Very good class
pretty cool guy. go to class, pay attention, take notes, don't bs any papers, study, put some thought into the final and research paper and you'll do fine. professor gave me an A- even though i pulled a C- on one of his exams. i made up for the loss by doing a great job on the presentation.
One of the best professors ive ever had ! basically, go to class, do the essays, and do the assignments and you should do fine. overall I would most definitly take him again !!
Great Professor!! I would take him again...Test are right out of his lectures! His pace is good to take note and is clear! Makes class fun!!! You must take!
This professor is the GREATEST professor of ALL time! I've taken his class more than once! Just do the hw,study all his lectures(because all his exams are based on his lectures), and do the assignments and you'll be fine! He's very "clear" on his lectures and hes a very down to earth professor. I Highly reccomend him! Trust me!
He is a great teacher. He knows what he is doing. He is very intelligent, so if you ever need help he will be there to help you. He is funny !!! so its not boring attending class.
Pretty coo class just a lot of research and a big project also you will have to do a load of reading in his class
One of the best professors that I have taken in CSUN. The class is extremely interesting and I always looked forward to it every week. There are couple of journals, 3 midterms, and a final project. Best professor for the subject, take if possible.
He's a very nice guy and tries to be funny at times. He is a bit dorkie, however, he still makes class kind of interesting. There are a total of 9 journals, which he grades relatively easy. There are also 3 midterms, which are quite difficult, and finally there is a group project. He creates a very sociable environment. Overall, decent guy.
He is the best professor ever. He explains everything crystal clear. He knows what he is talking about.Make sure you take very good notes and pay extra attention to the small details.
Great Teacher. Hilarious, interesting and approachable. All u have to do is attend class and take note
easy A!! great professir enjoyed it. dont buy the book. study for exams.
Best professor ever
Best professor ever. Really cares about his ALL of his students, creates a social-friendly atmosphere, hilarious, and clear. If this class is open, add it before it fills up quick!
Great professor!! I learned a lot in his class, very helpful and kind, intelligent person!!
You have to write alot of case analysis. plus research paper. Great prof, very intelligent, lectures well, but the assignements are too much. and ahrd to handle.
Great professor. Very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. The class is not an easy A, but you'd have to be a dummy to get a C. An A is possible if you take good notes, ask questions and study for his midterms!
One of the best professors at CSUN in my opinion! His midterms can be very tricky, although he does tell you exactly what he wants you to study. LOTS OF WRITING INVOLVED! Minimum of 28 pages over the course of the semester. I used to be terrified of long papers, but after this class I can write an A+ 12pg research paper in less than 2 days! (:
One of those teachers that you actually teach you valuable info. I learn so much about why society looks at people in certain ways and how rules and laws cage certain races. Although its AAS you understand where all races are coming from. I loved this class. Hes funny and 100 percent upfront. If you get less than a B in this class its on you.TAKE!
Good dude. Wants to see you succeed and is very insightful on issues of racism to be a white guy........i'll just leave it at that :) ROAD HOUSE!
Phillip is, first off, an insanely brilliant professor. But he is also a huge goofball, and although he takes the material very seriously, his humor adds a great flavor to the class that you won't get in many other courses. I learned so much from him and he truly changed my perspective on many things. Attend class, take good notes, and study hard!
Go to class and take good notes. Professor made a not so fun subject into something interesting and understandable. Loved the class. Highly recommended.
Wow. Professor Hutchinson is one of the best teachers I have every had. He made this class so fun and interesting. TAKE THIS CLASS if you actually want to learn. Not hard as long as you fill out the study guide before the midterms. 1 group project, 6 journals, 3 midterms. LOVED this class. best professor.
One of the most interesting and influential classes I have ever had the pleasure to be apart of. Yes, he gives papers, but, he gives good grades for effort, and if its late (no matte how long) you can still get a 90. The most rewarding easy class ever.
Come to class, take notes and I guarantee you, you'll pass the class with at least a B. And oh yea, HE IS FUNNYYYYY!
He was honestly the best professor I have had at CSUN! Theres work to do obviously but it was all fun to do and he made it so interesting that I wanted to study and did amazing on the tests! I wish i could take this class again!
One of my favorite professors. He's extremely entertaining and super brilliant! This class truly changed my view on society. TAKE NOTES! ITS A MUST. If he finds something hilarious, best believe it will be an extra-credit question. There's work to do of course.
I got a B, which was my fault that I didn't study for an exam which I got a D on. 3 exams (3rd exam is also the final-not cumulative), 6(?) journals & group presentation. You don't have to actually get up & present, you can record a video & just show the video as long as it has a clear point. Don't really need the book bcus he covers it in class.
He's an amazing professor, his lectures are dense and full of information. His book is an easy read, really eye opening course. There were 3 major exams, 6 journals (which are really easy) and a final group project. You wont regret taking this class he's a really helpful and nice professor.
So far, the best professor I have had at CSUN. He's really happy to help you with anything and really cares for his students. He's funny and his lectures are very interesting! Really changed the way I see and think about society and everything else. Take his class!!!
One of the best professors here at CSUN. He gives you a study guide that is exactly like the test. The homework assignments are straight forward. He makes the class interesting and easy to pass.
Prof. Hutchison is an amazing teacher. His lectures are very well constructed which makes you interested in what he is teaching and make sure you take very good notes especially on the small details because he gives you the answers for the extra credit on the tests.
One of the best professors I've ever had. The workload isn't too much, the papers he does give us are fairly easy, and the two midterms we have come with a study guide which is extremely helpful. Don't miss class because he teaches something important every class session, and it's honestly worth going to class and learning from this professor.
He really hits the mark with "critical thinking" for his class. Takes his time to go into depth with the concepts and overall lecture. Open to any questions and does his very best to help in any possible way. Very genuine and sweet professor, definitely supportive if you are struggling. BUT DON'T CHEAT! You'll be kicked out IMMEDIATELY (no joke)
One of the best at CSUN. He made the subject matter understandable and interesting. He is VERY clear about what you need to know for tests. The work isn't a breeze, but he gives you all the tools to do very well. That was key for me in his class. Take him for sure. Formula for an A in my case: show up to class, take notes, master the study guides!
Dopest eacher I've ever had.
He is amazing. I did not study much and only listened during lectures. His lectures are interactive and very interesting to listen to and you learn alot from it. There is a sufficient amount of writing in class which if you listen in class you are already done with half of the writing and the other half is some research. Easy and fun GE, take it!!!
The lectures are interesting! There are a few papers, but he's very lenient on the grading. The tests are easy if you take good notes and review the study guide. Pay careful attention to the hints he gives out, they helped me on the tests. He gave me a higher grade than I could have possibly earned! He is definitely one of my favorite professors.
Class is not hard, but you have to show up since most of the test material is covered in class. Many writing assignments, and a group project/presentation. Start your papers early so you can get feedback for a higher grade. Professor was extremely helpful and accessible .
One of the best professors I've had at CSUN! Prof. Hutchison is hilarious, very passionate about his work and cares about his students. He gives a lot of good feedback on essays and encourages his students to ask questions. The tests are based on his lectures as long as you take good notes you'll pass. Great class overall!
This professor is by far the best professor I've had my three years of CSUN. He gives study guides before the tests. He has a good sense of humor and he is cute (IMO) so it helped make the material fun.
He is really good in his studies. If you need help he is there to support you. I took his class Asian American studies the class was really interesting and I learned alot. Overall he is funny and helpful to students. he is kind and nice to all his students. he cares all his students.
He cares for his students to do well. He caring and show love to his students. He is a really good professor. He knows his subject really well. He makes the class interesting to learned. He has a kind heart. He more likely to help you with your assignment if you don't understand.
He's a GREAT professor. He makes you work for a good grade, but he's very fair in his grading. His study guides are helpful. He's very funny. Tries to keep things entertaining. You'll learn a lot from him; he completely changed my understanding on the subject. Good man. Better teacher. Likes to get to know his students. Super chill.
Quirky, very kind, and amusing. He is very knowledgeable about the subject and his lectures are lengthy but very informative. All the journals (short papers) and test are very straight-forward. Overall, one of the best professors I have ever had. Highly recommend taking one of his classes.
Be ready for some lame jokes. Fairly easy class lectures sometimes feel long. A lot of writing but easy prompts. Not a hard grader do the work and you'll pass. Definitely knows what he's talking about so don't be afraid to ask questions. Really tries to get to know his students on a personal level.
Phil is great. You learn a lot and get a perspective that is helpful especially with our society these days. Hes very insightful and respected. His jokes arent too bad either.
Great professor! Made the class very enjoyable and I learned a lot! Had to do case journals, some reading journals, a powerpoint, and a 7 page case brief about anything we wanted. The 7 page paper was the hardest part because I had a 6 page paper for another class. But it wasn't THAT bad. Take him! He's great and wants his students to do well!
Professor Hutchison is so nice and helpful. As he says himself, his main purpose is for us to improve ourselves.
PROFESSOR HUTCHISON IS THE BEST OF THE BEST HERE AT CSUN I RECOMMEND 10/10 DO NOT HESITATE IN TAKING HIM HE 110% CARES FOR HIS STUDENTS AND WANTS THEM TO PASS HE IS VERY UNDERSTANDING AND WILL BE THERE FOR YOU NOT JUST AS A PROFESSOR BUT AS A FRIEND AS WELL, HE MAKES HIS LECTURES INTERESTING AND FUN AND SOMETIMES BRINGS SNACKS FOR THE STUDENTS3
I LOVE PROFESSOR HUTCH !!!! Hes is such a sweet person and understandable. He reminds students of there purpose and motivates them to push beyond there limits. He is very goofy and awkward but it makes the class have much more a living vibe.
If you took his 201 critical thinking class, this class should be no problem. His exams are intimidating but as long as you're studying, you should be fine. He has lame jokes, but he's a great guy. Maybe, the best Asian American study class I've taken. I've gotten the privilege to take him twice and did well in both. He does talk lot, but TAKE HIM
He is very nice and gives amazing lecture. Textbook is free to download from library website. 4 Journals, 1 research paper(7-9 page), 1 group presentation, 2 midterms. He would explain everything and give you study guide before each exam, basically no questions left before I took the exam. Do read the material, understand it, then no problem for A.
The Best !!!
Wow! He's one of my favorite professors at CSUN. I expected myself to have a difficult time in class considering the workload (Reading Responses, Group Presentation, 2 papers , 2 Exams). However, his lectures and required readings were interesting and helpful. Every lecture is important and he reviews each chapter of the textbook required.
One of the best professors I have ever taken. He is organized, he shows up on time, he will answer all your questions, and he is respectful. This class was over Zoom and he did a great job. The lectures are very interesting. In this class we talk a lot about race and other minority groups not just Asian-Americans.
COVID19 This was the most absent professor I've ever had. You're given two books to figure out and interpret yourself for the weekly assignments. No lectures, no powerpoints. You'd be lucky to have a video attached with the weekly assignments to help you understand the content you are supposedly learning. Am I really paying full tuition for this?
This teacher would be great if I saw him. But the class itself is difficult, so you need to work for your grade. Great option though. I am not one to learn as much but this teacher makes you learn haha Good Luck!
You'd expect most professors to be more lenient now that covid has hit and affects every student in different ways. However, it does not seem like this professor cares at all. He uploads lecture videos about twice a month and doesn't send any announcements to anything. an extreme amount of homework, papers, and three exams.
Really phenomenal professor. Handled our transition to online learning quite well. His lectures are some of the best I've ever experienced. This class has a lot of difficult material and he handles it all with honesty. His grading is very fair, but be prepared to know the material well.
3 non-cumulative exams, 12 weekly responses, 2 case researches, 2 reading responses, final paper. I'd say he's pretty picky about points, but it's asynchronous so I didn't want to be a burden and ask a lot of questions. Prepare to write a lot, but you'll learn a lot. He responded quick, I just wish he graded faster. Taking him again next semester.
Overall it was a difficult semester because of not meeting in person but, the instructor manages to do an excellent job teaching. I gave professor Hutchison a five star because he is caring and knows the lecture material very well. You will learn a lot in this class just by the lectures alone. Thank you, professor!
Prof. Hutchison is a good professor. His class is very thorough and interesting. His tests basically consist of his lectures so pay attention during class. He is a tough grader but as long as you try you will do fine.
Phil is dope! But you will have to pay attention in order to pass the class. He lectures a lot and you have to read! His quiz/exam are intense so make sure you take notes and keep up with him when he lectures. Other than that he is nice, respectful, and communicates really well! If you looking for an easy class his aint it, respectfully.
Super nice, organized, and understanding! Very passionate and I truly learnt a lot from his lectures, and you can tell he's super well-versed on the topics. Textbook can be found online. Do the study guides because they help SO much! Easy A if you put in effort and show up to class. Take good notes and pay attention, it's worth it
Amazing professor! Two exams and a good amount of papers. Definitely requires your attention to pass, but easy if you do. He knows what he's talking about and replies quickly. Gives a study guide and even offered extra credit, which isn't usual for him. One of my favorites, but not an easy A if you don't try. He was even one of my references!
Prof H is not only knowledgeable but passionate about he does. His class hard asf ngl, brains gotta be husky. If you are more about easily earned good grades than learning, this aint for you dawg. Recommend pre-writing your exams as he gives you the study guides prior, takes off some pressure,yk. Workload is doable but gotta put your mind to it.
Prof. H really enjoys what he teaches. The class is not hard but it is a lot of work. There are 4 journals (3-5pgs), a research paper (7-10pgs), two midterms (short answer), and a group presentation. The course is also lecture-heavy, so if you don't go to class you are going to struggle. Make sure you read the book too!
Professor H is one of the best professors I have ever had. SO knowledgeable about the subject. What I have learned in this class will stay with me for the rest of my life. If you would like to understand how law and politics have impacted race, you will come out with a firm understanding. 1 group pres, 4x (3-5pg paper), 1 research paper, 2 midterms
I really enojyed this class and the lectures, learned a lot from it! Gives 4 essays, two exams, & final paper. You have to make sure to take notes & review cause without that, you won't pass his exams. Also essays are based on readings, but u can get a free pdf online! Overall though, really reccommend this class
I really enjoyed Hutchison's class. The lectures were interesting and I never felt lost as Hutchison really made all the concepts very clear. There are two midterms, a group projects, 4 three page papers, and a final research paper. The work was a lot and you definitly have to study a lot in order to pass the class, but I think it was all worth it.
I learned a lot in this class. The lectures are fast paced so take notes and come to class. Be prepared to write a lot (2x journal entries, 2x case analysis papers, 2x midterms, and a 7-9 page research paper)
I absolutely love this professor. He is difficult if you don't pay attention but I happen to like the subject so it was good. He is super helpful and makes a lot of jokes. He makes it a point to know everyone's names and has good feedback. Take him if you're smart because you will not pass if you don't care about school.
Professor Hutchison is first of all hilarious. Great lectures, make sure to take notes and pay attention. Cares about what he teaches, a decent amount of homework. Make sure to do all assignments and study the study guide for midterms. I would recommend the class and would take it again.
quite a few assignments imo, a lot of writing journals and reflection type assignments one group project that was straightforward and didn't take a ton of work prof is attentive and makes an effort to get to know the students 2 exams, a midterm and a final, around 1/2 of each is writing so you have to pay attention to the lecture to do well
You do have one textbook but it's not the main focus of the class, very few journal assignments, one group project, two exams, and no final exam. Very passionate about the subject and is easy to talk to. DON'T skip class because he gives you the notes necessary to pass the midterms. One of my favorite professors at CSUN.
One of the best professors I have had, straightforward with everything, concepts are easy to grasp, and he is easy to talk to and ask questions. Some homework/journals, very easy to do. Took one group project. He is a very caring professor, and great at communicating. Classes are easy, and note taking is suggested.
Very kind and funny. Professor Hutchison's lectures were easy to follow and fun to listen to. He makes lots of jokes so class is more engaging. Assignments are mainly essays but they aren't hard. As long as you attend his lectures and take good notes, you'll pass the class!
He is very funny, nice and caring professor! attend class and you will be fine
Class is extremely loaded. Assignments have no clear rubric, feedback is lacking. Taking detailed notes helps a lot because random things become extra credit qs on exams. Many classes were canceled in my semester, instead of leaving things out, he crammed everything in while continuously apologizing to the class as if that made it any better
He is good and understanding but tough grader
Professor Hutchison makes this class engaging with his humor and clear explanations. Assignments can be heavy, but attending lectures and taking good notes goes a long way. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
Prof. Hutchison is an amazing educator. The workload is average, but not difficult. Also, his grading criteria is clear and he is an overall very fair grader. One group presentation which isn't too bad, and as long as you show up to lectures and pay attention the midterm and final should be fairly easy. He is a great lecturer and very engaging.
The professor's class is interesting. Many interesting topics relating to AAS are discussed. The entire class requires reading and listening to the professor. The class relies on understanding lectures and expressive writing. This class is heavy on writing in tests. You won't do well without writing enough details. Deadlines are strict.
He was a laid back, well-minded, and overall outstanding professor. He would take complicated race/class issues and explain them in ways that were easy to understand, and even showed us a Dave Chappell skit for an assignment. Exams were few and far between and were super easy. Just make sure to read the book, he'll appreciate it.
Very chill and understanding guy, made class enjoyable, really wants students to learn. Does have a group project/presentation but gives a lot of time to complete. Does have a midterm and final that were decently hard but not bad if you pay attention in class and take good notes and keep up with the minimal hw you'll only have to study a little.
He is super engaging and passionate. As someone who was very burnt out from school, it was nice going to a lecture that I enjoyed. Whilst attendance isn't mandatory, going to class is likely the only actual way to get an A because he is very specific with his concepts and the way he conveys them.
Professor Hutchison was a super funny professor and throughout the academic year, I can say that I did laugh a few times. His lectures are essential to success but attendance is not mandatory. He is an equal mix of saying things once or a thousand times where there were days he was just repeating information. Overall, I enjoyed his class :)
This is such a difficult class. The professor himself is just a really endearing guy so it's easy to engage, and he has a clear love of the craft (both law and teaching). I remember going through the midterm study guide and panicking before realizing all of the information I needed was in my notes and all I had to do was ctrl F them.
There isn't any slides uploaded to canvas so it's important to attend lecture for the actual information. His class was very engaging and he explained the concepts very thoroughly. All of the assignments involve writing so I wouldn't recommend if you don't like writing that much. There's 2 midterms and no final. Overall a great professor/experience
Very passionate about his lectures and ensures his students feel supported. Exams and quizzes are easy, and the material is easy to understand—a reading and writing abundant course. Syllabus is concise, so it's easy to catch up if you miss a lecture. Only issue my peers and I had was he talks about himself a lot and spends time going on tangents.
