Great teacher. I hate history completely but he made it very easy to grasp. I don't think I have had a better professor ever.
I expect more from my teachers.
Really bad teacher.
great class. well organized.
Energetic lecturer, does not sugar coat history.
great guy, really enjoyed his class. Better than average lecturer, he definitely won't bore you to death
Very well organized w/fair expectations. Just write the paper, attend class, read text and study your notes. My only complaint is his refusal to acknowledge the severity of non-White history and struggle. He almost makes excuses and downplay certain behaviors to alieve White guilt.
He tries to make the class interesting and also help you out, by showing you exactly what you need to know.
ive had him for 3 classes, and ive got to admit, hes one of the best. never had any complaints, if you have a question...GO BY HIS OFFICE>>>>
He's a good guy that seems to hold fast to his Southern roots. Some of the things he says can be found offensive and I'm a white male Southerner myself. However, he's very upfront with how he feels about most subjects and takes his work seriously and teaches a good class. His attendance policy is very kind as he allows you to miss 11 classes. However, his cell phone policy is a little too strict in that he means it when he says you can fail over that. Maybe he should lighten up just a tad.
Great teacher, almost all of his test and quiz material comes from lecture. Very strict on cell phones and turning assignments in on time. Will go out of his way to help you.
great professor. he definately knows what hes talking about. only problem is that he paces back and forth while lecturing and it gets dizifying (totally made up that word). NEED TO PAY ATTENTION in order to pass class
Very interested in the subject, makes you want to learn so you can participate in class discussions
Excellant teacher. You do actually learn in his class even if it does feel you have to teach yourself a lot of extra information. He just expects you to study. Use the handouts, book, and movies shown in class and you'll do fine. Takes a lot of studying but you'll feel rewarded from the class by the end of it.
he is so EXCITED about history. He is intelligent, thorough, and it helps that he gives a written copy of a TEST REVIEW for ALL tests. He makes sure you know all the test info. He is also, very charming, interesting and a fun teacher to have. He has a dry sense of humor and he makes history amazingly interesting and relative. he's also hot!
Really a great teacher. Made me wanna learn history. He's clear and loud. Enthusiastic and easy to understand. He was sick and really helped us because he was gone.
By far 1 of my favorite teachers! I had never learned more about US history in my life! He is loud and clear when he speaks and makes sure everyone is on the same page. Always gets you more than prepared for his tests. Just study! You get your moneys worth in this class
Great class, really challenging. He's really into it so classtime's interesting. BUT MAKE SURE YOU STUDY! 5 grades total: 2 quizes (add up to a test grade) and 3 tests. I failed the first test and had to work really hard to get my B, but it was worth it!
McCaskey rocks! Had no interest in history ever untill I had him. He's very passionate and knowledgable. Had him for 3 histories and highly recomend him. Pay attention in calss - good notes, study up for tests, multiple choice but tricky!!
GREAT teacher! Take him for what ever history you can!
this isnt the easyest class but he is hot
he was a horrible teacher. he only talks about **** things and doesnt care what words he uses to describe them. he does not help at all during any classes. we only had like three exams and they were useless and not easy at all. he was a horrible teacher and only talked about slavery and politics every day. he is horrible..do not take his class!!!
He's a good guy, but the class is horrible. He wrote the book for the class and its basically an outline, no glossary or index. tests are over 5-6 chapters at a time. He lectures an hour straight everyday. Extremely boring, and definitely not an easy class.
He is very interesting! He teaches very fast but his book is an outline to his lectures. He stars things that will be on the test. and his study guides are so helpful its like hes handing you an A. He was a great teacher!
Definitely not the case...He does give you a study guide...but it has terms from 5-6 chapters or approx 30 dif terms. Not to mention you have to label maps based on your own knowledge, no matching, gets a little trick when you have to knwo all the battles of the civil war. I studied for days and still got low mid 80s on tests.
McCaskey is a cool guy personally. But the class is different. Test material is indirectly related to what is taught in class and the text is hard to follow. I like that he adds his opinion, but I would rather learn what is going to be on the test, considering that is where our grades comes from. ALL 3 test (25%ea) and 2 quizzes (12.5%ea).
I would highly recommend this teacher because his text book is exactly what his tests will be on. It is an outline of everything he talks about and he hands out a list of exactly what will be on each quiz or test at least a week prior to it. He emphasizes only the important aspects of history. =]
Do not take this class for an easy A. Take this class because he is a great teacher who love the subject he teachers. He is also a great guy, really funny, and will help you out! Two thumbs up.
Take his class because he is passionate about what he teaches and because he is super HOT! He is a very caring person and a laid back surfer. :) He'll clarify thing immediately.
Awesome dude pretty laid back great teaching style and give you clear study guides for all the quizes and test highly recommend
He's could lecture in his sleep word for word, I think. Just don't try the six week mini course. Too much info for the cranium to absorb in a short time.
Awesome dude taking him for the 3rd time this spring(different classes of course) but he knows what he is teaching and wants his students to succeed. Clear study guides are given for all test and quizzes HIGHLY recommend!!!
He covered everything on the study guides he gave for tests and quizzes. He gives you everything that is on there and discusses what is in the textbook. What he talks about is on the tests and study guides. Really helpful and wants to help his students suceed.
McCaskey is a great teacher. His test and quizzes are directly from the text book... well... its because he WROTE the text book. He is an awesome teacher and is willing to help anyone who needs it. Do the study guides, and you should be fine.
great lectures, interesting "selected topics in history", thoroughly prepare with the review sheets to get a good grade
McCaskey is really chill he likes to talk about surfing a lot. He gives you the study guides for all tests and quizzes in the very beginning of the semester. He likes to give exact page references when talking about things since he wrote his own text book. My advice is to write those pages down! It makes it a lot easier to study.
very cool teacher. his lectures are NOT boring, but I think he may have a touch of ADHD. lol
Great Professor! Very clear and helpful teacher. If you have trouble with his tests, he wants you to come see him for help. After going to see him, I went from a 72 on my first test to a 96 on my second. Ended the class with a B. Very chill as long as he doesn't catch you texting!
Best class ever! Extremely easy, very helpful, uses the book but also uses study guides, which are super similar to the test questions. If you hate history and really want to get an A, which i did, first time, take this class!
wrote the textbook--he knows ALOT about history. gives a study guide for each test and quiz--EACH QUESTION CORRELATES EXACTLY TO EACH ITEM ON THE GUIDES. questions are not all straightforward, however, some are slightly subjective and require analyzation of facts he has presented. fair amt of videos--some questions pulled from these. nice guy.
Mr. McCaskey is awesome! coolest teacher at cfcc! starts his class off talking about his crazy weekends d.j-ing and the spot he hit up to surf. he is totally laid back, just dont text!! he hates that. but other than that, his class is great and he knows his stuff very well.
awesome teacher, I was working 40+ hrs. a week and still managed to receive a B in the class. The test's are pretty hard, all our tests were take home but super hard. Had a blast in the class.
This class is basically story hour. He teaches us nothing and the tests are super hard. Luckily he spent like 5 weeks on one chapter and ended up having to give 2 tests and 1 quiz as take home in the last two weeks of the semester. He's laid back, but if you want to learn i wouldn't suggest this class.
Although he is a bit monotone and early in the morning that can provide difficulties he is a really funny guy. He is really passionate about what he does, which is refreshing at a community college. He has a bit of trouble staying on topic every once and awhile but that's not too big of a deal. I would definitely recommend him.
Mr. McCaskey is the best history teacher I have had. Laid back and entertaining. My only issue are the tea party type under tones he uses during lectures. DO YOUR RESEARCH.Right to work states doesn't "just" mean you don't have to join a union. It means you work for low wage, little or no benefits, and cannot be represented for better conditions.
Mr. McCaskey is a trip. He leads a pretty interesting life and tells you all about it... try to get him off topic as much as you can and he will literally spend no time on topic. It's great.. so then he has to give you take home tests because he realizes he spent the first half of the semester on one chapter. Super cool guy though.
He really knows what he is talking about, and if you pay attention you can make good grades. He gives study guides for his tests and quizzes, you just have to make sure that you actually do them because the tests are hard.
Mr. McCaskey is the most chill, laid back teacher I've ever had. Super nice guy and for someone who hates History, he made the class pretty interesting. He LOVES history and it shows in his teaching. Out of the 3 tests we had to take, 2 of them were take homes. Take him if you can!
most chill teacher ive ever had, he asks for respect but gives it in return! TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!!
He is an amazing teacher. You really feed off of his energy. He loves the subject and is very passionate about teaching it. I can't wait to take another class with him!
He rambles He talks about his personal life WAY too much His text book is more like a novel, and very hard to find things in He never covers everything on the test before you actually take the test
He spends way to much time talking about the parts of history that he enjoys and barely ever goes over what you need to know for your 11 tests. He is boring. Get ready to spend hours reading your textbook trying to figure out what to study. He is a really nice guy but not a good teacher. I would advise skipping him if you want a good grade.
He is a great teacher and definitely made it interesting!
I love this teacher. If I could have him for all my classes, school would be AMAZING. Take his classes you won't be sorry. If I could take his classes even for no credit just for the lectures I would.
History, my least favorite subject, and this was a three hour night class... He kept my attention the whole time and taught passionately! Loved his class, plan to take another class with him for fun! Give him a shot, he may change the way you look at history!
He's a cool guy but not a great teacher. He has a real passion for the subject so he tends to teach what he wants to teach rather than what he is required to teach. The problem with that is that what he is required to teach is what shows up on his test. Also he can be a little disorganized. He doesn't assign much work but you have to self teach.
Awesome class! Mr. McCaskey has an clear passion for history and it comes out in his lectures. While he does state his opinions pretty often in class, he does emphasize that they are opinions that are open for debate. The tests are very straight-forward, and he gives excellent study guides. Just be prepared to read the textbook (which he wrote).
Not an incredibly difficult class but make sure to attend because take home quizzes are given. The lectures were interesting and he's very enthusiastic about the material.
Great story teller. Gives testing material at the beginning, so as long as you look it up, attend class and pay attention you will pass, no problem. Read the material. He wrote the material, so he knows it. Drops lowest grade.
Really nice guy and extremely knowledgeable of the material he's teaching. The lectures were great and interesting. His tests are all multiple choice and some questions are tricky. He wrote the textbook and it's rather boring, but the lectures make up for it. Definitely read it though for tests. Also, he demands respect. Keep the phones turned off!
McCaskey is the best professor I've had. His class is informative and easy if you read what is needed. In this class, you take a total of 10 tests, and 1 extra test if you want to replace a low grade. He gives a study guide for the tests you will take and if you read about the topics for said test you will positively get an A. Great teacher!
He is so knowledgeable about this subject! Very willing to help you understand. He will answer any questions you may have. He is very clear on instructions for test. Come to class, take notes and you should do well in his class.
Definitely my favorite teacher of college so far! He's absolutely hilarious and makes class fun!
most tests were word for word in his book
Mr. McCaskey is a wonderful professor. His lectures are interesting and even though there are a lot of tests, he is very clear about what will be on the test. There are no makeups, quizzes, or homework and never anything on BlackBoard. You can tell that history is his passion and he truly wants to make it interesting for everyone.
Pretty good teacher but he teaches what he want's and not whats on the test. Not a hard class just make sure to read the textbook while studying. Tests are usually really short (12-15 questions) and usually use the same words in the textbook.
He is awesome and keeps you engaged, he will slow down if you are falling behind. He is available to his students all the time (unless he is DJ'ing) he will get back to you quickly. Dont let your phone ring in his class and definately don't use your phone in his class or you will fail. 11 tests taken and the lowest grade dropped.
My favorite teacher at Cape Fear. Takes 11 tests and drops lowest test grade. Super funny and nice. Amazing story telling and interesting lectures. Don't let your phone ring though.
McCaskey is a wonderful teacher and a great lecturer. He gives 11 tests and the lowest is dropped. Most of the material is in the study guide he provides at the beginning of the year or in the text book if you miss a class.
Very good professor! Actually love listening to his lectures. He tells you interesting facts that are not really known. He definitely knows his history. Be respectful while he is teaching and just go ahead and turn your phone off before class. Test are fairly easy and short (approx 15 questions average). Drops lowest grade. Highly recommend.
Amazing instructor, very passionate about History and knows his stuff! You do have to work in his class but he will help those who ask for help. Due to the fact that I loved his class so much, I am taking his second history class as an elective. Be respectful, leave your phone in your book bag on silent, and study... you should do well.
This was one of my first CFCC classes and I loved it! Professor McCasksy is great! He makes his classroom atmosphere very casual and laid back. In order to pass you have to listen to the lectures, study your textbook and show up. It's simple. I noticed that he also made a point to learn everyone by their first name and ask them how they were doing!
If you have to take a history class, TAKE IT WITH MCCASKEY. i honestly hate history sooo much but he was the nicest guy, whatever he puts on a test, he writes it on the board during lecture. and the study guides he hands out on the first day is exactly whats on his tests. he's the best, he tries so hard to make sure everyone gets an A. so worth it
Good luck!
Most amazing instructor at CFCC! Very passionate about his what he teaches and Very knowledgeable! Learned a lot in this class.
Great teacher. He made the class enjoyable.
Professor McCaskey is incredible. He really knows what he's talking about and always makes history interestingboth in his characterization of historical events and of how it's all relevant today. His lectures are rarely boring and I genuinely enjoyed his class. The tests are also extremely easy if you study from the study guide.
Professor McCaskey made my more my love for History that much greater. Although, if you don't study, you may be in trouble. Bu I highly recommend this guy as a history professor because he knows what he is talking about!
I didn't buy the book, but it's helpful to have it. There are 11 mini test through out the semester and he drops one. I took 10 and pass all of them so I didn't come on the last day to take the test. I always went to the library and rented his book instead of buying it. Overall, I enjoyed him as a teacher. Easy and no homework!
Very clear on what is needed to be known for his tests. As long as you study from the study guide, read the textbook, and take notes in class, you will get an A in his class.
I hate history, and thought I'd fail, but Mr. McCaskey made it easy for me to get a B in this class! If you don't at least get a B, then you're not trying. He makes study guides that are exatctly what's on the tests, and the notes on the board with stars next to them will always be on the test!
BEST TEACHER EVER. He wrote the textbook so everything you need to know for the tests come straight from the text word for word. He gives you a study guide and with the exact questions that he will ask and theres only like 10 questions on the test. Such a nice guy and will do anything to help you succeed. And no homework
Professor McCaskey was a solid choice for American History. As long as you take notes and review the study guide you will do fine.
This class is simple, show up and listen. No intense study sesh is needed to pass unless you aren't actively listening in class. He generally cares about his student and has a passion for what he teaches.
I liked him a lot! He has 11 mini-tests and he drops the lowest one. The only bad thing I would say is he his tests aren't consistent in the number of questions he askes on a test. This can be a problem if there are only 8 questions on a test. There is no extra credit. I would totally take him again if I had to. I would recommend him to anyone.
I LOVE Mr. McCaskey! The class is lectures and tests. He gives you a packet with every study guide to all 11 tests, some you even take home. He also wrote the textbook! You go to class & even if you miss a class - it's in his book! You reach out to him & he gets back to you within 24 hours. He really wants you to succeed! He's just a great guy! :)
Okay I had him 3 years ago and he would always say a little phrase after lecture to make sure everyone was on the same page but i cant remember what it was someone please tell me.
