Very light class, only three online exams and a final paper as well as a couple of online quizzes (you get two tries for each quiz). Pop Rock and Soul music is known to be the easiest class for a reason. Lectures are just read off of slides she posts online, so if you miss her class you can always just refer back to those. Attendance is not graded.
Super easy class, attendance is not mandatory at all. Really good choice if you need an easy A for an A credit.
Amazing class. Easy A credit. Easy A
Hughes was a really kind, funny professor who engaged with her class a lot. Lots of textbook reading but it was necessary for the online, open-book texts. One 5-7 page paper that wasn't bad if you planned ahead. A few listening journals & quizzes (all of which were online & open-book). Easy class for the A gen ed.
Professor Hughes is very kind and it is very easy to succeed in her class
Prof Hughes was kind and funny and it felt like learning from a friend during her lectures. The content was not hard so long as you went to class and most of the work (tests) are done online. There are frequent mini essays but she is not a harsh grader as long as you give effort.
queen lowkey but talks WAYYYY too much about taylor swift. like girl idgaf
She made the class super easy. All the exams are on Brightspace and open notes. The essays are a bit challenging but overall this class was super easy and I highly recommend you take it. Dr. Hughes can be pretty boring at times and she can also be slightly passive aggressive but overall she's pretty friendly.
class is super easy because all tests and quizzes are open book. prof hughes is extremely knowledgeable about music and you can tell she really loves teaching about it. be prepared to listen to a bunch of different music you might not be familiar with. if you need a class for the a attribute this is for sure one of the most manageable ones!!
Her exams and quizzes are very straightforward. They are all online and open-note and the answers can be found directly in her PowerPoints, which she posts on Brightspace. She is very lenient and accomodating with assignments, and is easy to reach by email.
She talks a lot in class and rambles on. Overall, the class is really easy with take home exams and quizzes, but there were 5 essays throughout the semester and 2 essays for each exam which were a little annoying to write because the prompts weren't always the best. And there is a qr code for attendance.
Took this class because I had an interest in music and how it evolved to where it is now. Turns out nothing was taught that I hadn't already known before. I felt that she skimmed over genres a lot and prioritized discussion of others in an undue manner. Manageable workload, fun personality, just don't procrastinate or get on her bad side.
Professor Hughes may be the worst professor I've had at Binghamton. So much work made worse by sometimes incorrect information and an inability to give clear instructions or prompts. Five "mini" essays, three three-part exams (including two essays each), and quizzes every other week. She also takes attendance with QR codes. Don't take this class!
Took as grade booster but liked the class. Everything is online but nonetheless was pretty easy. Professor Hughes seems nice but the lectures weren't really helpful for me personally. But overall, the class was super easy and non stressful, I highly recommend taking it if you want an easy class, especially if it fills a requirement for you!
Took Taylor Swift Univ with her. Shes a fine teachers obviously loves Swift and was knowledge on the music industry. However for this being a 2 credit course I found the workload too heavy. I also find that she is not great as giving clear instructions and many of me and my peers were often confused as to what she wanted from us in assignments
The UNIV portion was not as bad as the Taylor Swift part. She did not give clear instructions and was unable to explain them when asked. So much writing for 2 credits, take another UNIV because this one was so much work compared to others. She was also not open minded or understanding.
I found the class interesting, but her lectures are boring and disengaging. There is a "required" textbook, but it was never referred to in class or on exams, so save your money. There is a lot of writing assignments for a music class, but were graded leniently. All of the tests and quizzes are online and fairly easy if you set some time aside
A very easy Gen-Ed. She's very knowledgeable on the content and makes lectures more engaging by playing music. 5 essays throughout the semester and 3 (including final) take home exams. Sounds like a lot of work, but it was very manageable. I would definitely take her class again.
best gpa booster possible
dont take this. all quizes and test in class. long lecutres. u will fail.
The professor completely switched up on the online quiz and the laid-back style everyone was talking about. Everything is on paper and in person with a ta droning behind you the whole time. The professor was also pretty rude for no reason. She heard some chatter near my seat and just called me personally out to the whole lecture. DO NOT TAKE THIS.
Possibly one of the rudest people I have ever met. No longer gives take-home exams. Constantly berates the class, gives vague instructions, and is a very strict grader. Not to mention she is extremely condescending. Gets offended when referred to as professor and not a doctor. Literally has her pronouns as "she/her/dr" on the syllabus. AVOID!!!!!!!
- Huge Taylor Swift Fan - Uses texts full of "Scholary"/"Academic" Jargon - Assigns tons of these texts before each class - Not inviting for people who belong to marginalized groups I actually signed up for her MUS380F class and I think it should include that it is primarily focused on North American/Western culture. Title of course is misleading.
Where to begin. Class was changed from previous years, making it much more difficult. Very condescending and rude for no reason. Asks you to memorize dozens of songs playing random snippets during quizzes which are biweekly. Exams are harder than the quizzes. Avoid taking this class if you can!
Was told this class was easy and everything was online. She decided to change everything up this semester and make everything in-person. Adds a project to make the course even harder Expects us to memorize and remember 20 songs for the listening quizzes. Not to mention the professor was rude and condescending. Avoid this class for your gen-ed.
bro off the galaxy gas
jitt trippin fr
Don't listen to old reviews. She switched up. Her lectures are incredibly boring and take the fun out of music. Tests are entirely based on memorization, nothing to help you connect with the topic. Tests used to be open book/online, but people were "cheating" so now she makes it in-person torture. Just take theater or creative writing.
She needs to stop
boi what da hell boi
save yourself the trouble and drop
Quizzes are terrible. Workload is insanely heavy for a gen ed. Don't take this class.
Updating My Review From Last Month: Took this class last semester, it was manageable then. But from what I'm hearing from a friend in the course now, she's gone off the deep end. Avoid at all costs.
Dont Attend ,one of the worst class for a 100 level.
class structure changed
Dude I took this class in the Fall and it was the easiest class I've ever taken at bing but now she changed everything about it and made it so much harder. ALL tests and quizzes are in person, and attendance is mandatory. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU WANNA SIT AND MEMORIZE 20+ SONGS FROM A THOUSAND YEARS AGO!!! 🚨
Bruh this class can't be serious. Professor is an NPC. Took easiest class and ruined it. Don't take.
Professor Hughes acts like this gen ed is a major requirement at this point. For a 100-level course, she is simply overdoing it. Avoid it at all costs!!!!!!. You listen to her yap for an hour and half and you will listen to songs that will put you to sleep. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS NOW
she straight up dtm
No clue who hurt her, but she for sure takes it out on the class. Genuinely nasty and demands respect like a drill instructor. Instructions are very vague and does nothing to rectify this. Save yourself the trouble!
Writing this to counteract the 5 stars I gave her for Mus 110 2 years ago. I am in Mus 115 now and she is making me hate music. Idk why she had to change the class structure. Never in my life have I met someone as obnoxious and stupid as she is, avoid at all costs. This class is literally more work than orgo was. She's out of her mind istg.
Professor is so rude to everyone for no reason, even her TA who she yelled at in class. Took this for an easy A and is more work than my major classes. I wish I took theatre instead. She is clearly offended people considered this class an easy A and is now taking it out on students this semester. No one cares about your music research respectfully.
Words cannot describe the hatred I have for her. I have more work in this class than my major classes- for the record, I am double majoring in 2 stem majors. Such a waste of time. Extremely rude and puts everyone in a bad mood. Acts like she is the smartest person ever. genuinely- what does one do with a Phd in pop music? Like be so fr
Bruh I can't anymore guys I just can't. Save yourself.
do not take. straight dookie. idk what happened to her, heard her class would be an easy gen ed. makes me hate music. unnecessarily complicated for no reason. my hardest class this semester and all the other ones I'm taking are for my major.
shes out of her mind bro idk what happened. bro lost the twinkle in her eye
holy yap fest
Erm what the sigma...
Essentially, she changed everything from previous years, not only in this class but in her other classes also. The class moved from online to in-person without adapting the exams and quizzes for an in-person format, taking the difficulty of this class from beginner to PhD level. If you aren't proficient with musical decomposition, DO NOT TAKE!!!
This class is rough. The new format of the class makes the workload heavy. We are expected to memorize so much. Avoid this class at all costs.
Avoid at all costs. Took this for an easy A, instead I had a grade of 2 by February.
I tried to go to her office hours to ask a clarifying question about the journal assignment and she told me to pay attention better. I could tell she was about to call me an idiot but she managed to hold back. I dropped the class immediately.
Professor Hughes rated my professor of 4.5 when I signed up for this class. Now she is at a 2.1. Her class is more difficult than anything I've ever done in any of my Engineering Classes. Her tests are impossible, and she gives you hours of music listening per week.
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS , IT AFFECTED MY MENTAL HEALTH A LOT
rude and hard
YO, Too much work, heavy workload my friend said it was easier last year. The work load is so much more than my major required classes. Her tests are also weird. Her lectures don't make sense it is a snooze fest, she says um more than she teaches. ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. If you want a PHD in music take this class if not AVOID AT ALL COST.GPA TANKER
Do not take this class if you expect it to be an intro. The tests and quizzes are impossible because you're expected to identify everything taught about 1 out of the 20 assigned 5-10 minute listenings based on a 15 second sample, the tests are even worse. Her lectures are awful and she grades very harshly. The difficulty is awful for an intro.
BIG FAT SIGH. BIGGER THAN THE LINE AT C4 BEFORE THEY OPEN UP LATE NIGHT.
Yap yap yap yap yap all she ever does is YAPPPP. This class feels like she just wants us to memorize as much stuff as possible, there is nothing to understand. Biweekly quizzes where we have to memorize 20 songs- artist, form, year, genre, etc. it's so much for a gen ed and is the most time consuming class I am taking this semester.
Tough grader.
I took this class thinking it would be an easy A, as mentioned by many people who took it in the previous semester. However, she decided to change everything up, and I will be lucky to end up with a B+ after putting in a ton of hours studying and doing the assignments—changing exams/quizzes to in-person without an adaption to the new environment.
I wish there was a way to rate her a zero because I would. This is the biggest waste of time ever, and the worst class I have taken by far. This class makes orgo feel enjoyable. Took it bc everyone said it'd be an easy Gen ed, but it is more difficult and time consuming than my stem classes. Avoid this at all costs.
By far the rudest professor and most awful class I have ever taken. Avoid!
Terrible class
Not a great teacher and gives very challenging exams for an Aesthetics gen-ed credit. Attendance is mandatory, and she can be rude.
This is the most annoying class I've taken and likely the worst of my college experience. The professor can't handle that this is a GenEd course. Passion is one thing, but her hyper-fixation and making the course unnecessarily difficult out of personal dissatisfaction are unacceptable. Avoid this class—any other A credit will be better.
the class is not that bad if you're not dumb. we get a cheat sheet for the exams where you can write every single slide down. the listening quiz random questions are annoying though. its definitely misleading since this class was completely online before but she's change the grade thresholds to make up for the transfer from online to in-person.
Worst class I've ever taken. Prof Hughes is so unbelievably disrespectful to everyone she talks to. Also cares wayyyy too much about Taylor Swift. Her quizzes are impossible and gives vague instructions for assignments that she refuses to clarify, and then gives you a bad grade for it. You will crumble if you're not good at memorization.
This professor went from hero to zero. Despite changing things to in person, I would say I put in a fair effort each week for her quizzes, papers, and exams. Yet, I am having trouble just trying to figure out WHAT IS GOING ON? Wish her slides and readings would be more consistent, if you can, please take something like THEA 101 for your A credit.
I put a lot of effort into this class regarding her listening quizzes and exams and its almost impossible to get a good grade. She completely changed up the course this semester and a lot of students are having a difficult time in this class. I would not recommend
I have no clue what she has against us students but damn. She had a decently high rating when I decided to take the class but now... She expects you to memorize everything and the tests are insanely extensive for absolutely no reason. Everything was supposed to be open book but she completely changed it. I rathered my 400 lvl class over this.
Very dull professor. Does not care about the wellbeing of her students and is very vague with instructions for assignments. Her quizzes are borderline impossible and she is quite frankly one of the most rude people I've ever met. I liked orgo and physics more than her class and honestly I did better in them. I'll be lucky to get a B+ here.
Terrible professor. Rude, unhelpful, and gave me a zero on a quiz even after saying I could make it up. Had to go to the department to appeal. Lectures are pointless but you're forced to go for the attendance code. Total waste for a gen ed. Avoid at all costs. no one cares about taylor swift, you make me hate music!!! DONT TAKE THIS CLASS
This class is great if you enjoy varying music. You are allowed a cheat sheet every test and to do well in the class you will have to try. If you don't like music, don't take this class because there's a lot of listening since it's a MUSIC class. She is a great professor who loves what she teaches and people are being negative because they're lazy.
never in my life have i met someone as unpleasant as this woman. started class on the first day by saying "i am DOCTOR hughes, not mrs hughes- mrs hughes is my mother" and has her pronouns listed as "she/her/dr" on the syllabus. she is out of her mind!!! she was not this insane when i took mus 110 two years ago with her.
Exams and quizzes are a lot more difficult than it should be. Super boring lectures, yet interesting material. Not the easy class I have heard it to be.
Dr. Hughes changed the format of the course making it a lot harder, but it is doable. Not a fun or engaging class and the assignments were a waste of time. I should still be getting an A in the course, but would not willingly put myself through this class or this professor again.
absolutely terrible teacher, disrespectuful and rude to her students. crazy how binghamton can proudly represent a teacher who does not care about mental health. do not take this class for a gen ed credit. there are so many better ones. save yourself and your gpa the trouble
run far far far away from this class before its to late!!! if your a freshman trust there are better classes for A credit!!
Words cannot describe my anger. She directly misled the class by saying that if you got 100 on the rough draft for the paper, you don't and should not turn in a final one. Then, less than a week before the final paper is due, she says that not all 100s mean you don't need to do a final draft; some 100s were given just for completing the assignment.
Rude professor and very boring lectures. Hours of music to be memorized weekly plus textbook readings in addition to bi-weekly reports and two big concert reports per semester. Just way too much work for a level 100 gen ed.
This class was much more difficult than a Gen Ed should be. Frequent quizzes, tests, and writing/project work made it more tedious than many of my major courses. Lectures were also long and dull. This is unfortunate, as Prof. Hughes is passionate and knowledgeable about her subject; the class format just makes this hard for students to share in.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. I'D RATHER TAKE ORGO ON LSD THAN DO THIS.
no please no please
The class was way more work than a gen ed should be. That being said, she's an easy grader, and I currently only need a 60 on the final to get an A. Easy A, but there are definitely equally as easy gen eds out there with half the amount of work.
So many assignments and she gives such vague instructions. This is a GEN ED, not a 400s level honors seminar!!!! Hughes is also super disrespectful and doesn't have an ounce of empathy. It's a shame because it's evident she's passionate in what she's teaching. Also how can you teach a pop music class and not mention Freddie Mercury or Lady Gaga?!
She is terrible never take this class I took it for my A credit and was the worst possible choice for MUS 110. Her tests are so hard and her listening journals are busy work thats annoying to do, her attendance is only up for a few minutes and sometimes doesn't even work. Simply avoid her.
she said that if you liked a grade on your draft, no need to change the draft. I liked my grade n didnt do anything. then she said if it doesn't follow rubic u still need to change it but I didn't know that until I emailed her as I received a zero. she responds like 4 days later, and I fix it, then -40 for late penalty like wtf? u didn't explain.
Gave me a 0 on a quiz bc she said I didn't write my name on it but I literally did. This has happened to multiple other people as well and she refused to change the grade until we argued with her over email. Genuinely what is wrong with her?
Really easy material, but the class was set up to make students fail. She was blatantly rude and condescending to students in class. Lots of writing for no writing credit. The writing assignments were not clear in what to do. Take any other gen ed for the credit.
This class was not difficult. More work than expected, but the assignments were very simple if you can read directions. The content was interesting, and I didn't find her to be rude at all, just millennial if anything. My one issue with the course was that there was no mention of Lady Gaga or Nicki Minaj, and she barely talked about Ariana Grande
Artists she did not cover: Lady Gaga, Queen, Ariana Grande, Wham, Bruno Mars, My Chemical Romance, Cyndi Lauper, Katy Perry, etc Artists she did cover: literally don't even remember because they're not popular at all. The class is US Popular Music and she does not cover popular artists except for Taylor Swift- it's all she ever talks about.
Class was incredibly boring, everyone was on their phones. Professor could be snappy and not super approachable. An unnecessary amount of essays and quizzes every week with exams that were considerably difficult even with a cheat sheet. Only doable if you put in an absurd amount of effort for what should be an easy gen-ed. Had to put in long hours.
horrid class
Rude. Stay away from her.
Hard tests, allowed cheat sheets but impossible to actually study for them as the questions are so specific. Boring lectures too, hard to pay attention. Don't take this class if you don't have to.
people are saying she's awful, but all you need to do is pay attention and you'll do fine. Just listen to lectures and the work is easy! The professor is also very nice if you are nice to her.
There are way too many quizzes, tests, and papers for this class. Boring lectures, hard to sit through. Tests ask super specific questions that makes it hard to prepare for even with a cheat sheet.
Her lectures are insufferable to sit through although you can do whatever during class. Her assignments never have a clear rubric and even if you approach her after class the instructions are never clear. Her test are easy, you get a cheat sheet.
She's not as bad as people say. Yes the lectures are boring and long, but you get a one page cheat-sheet on every exam. The writing assignments aren't bad either, just have good time management skills.
Her lectures were insufferable. Content had nothing to do with the papers. Her exams were unnecessarily long. Music should've been a fun class but somehow she managed to make it so boring. Her lectures were useless, she just played different songs and asked us to guess what they were. Never thought a gen ed could be this lame.
Not as bad as people are saying. She was always nice when I spoke to her in person and responded to emails fast. Her lectures can be long, but can be pretty interesting. Imagine how frustrated you would be if people were doing other work, talking over you, and packing up early. I'm not saying she's perfect, but I think she gives what she gets.
Really not bad. Boring lectures. About 3 essays (which were easy, just once again, boring). Tests weren't terribly difficult, but you do have to study for them (look at slides). As a person, she's fine, responds to emails, and is helpful outside of class. In class, she can get annoyed easily (ppl loudly talking, packing up early), nothing crazy.
