best professor
If you have any prior experience with intermediate, you should be fine. He's not a great teacher, but if remember any of the material from a prior class, he does a good job of helping you remember. He's a quiet guy though, so sit up front if you have trouble hearing.
Great teacher. Attend his class and follow what he taught. You will understand easily, and easy to prepare for tests.
I took this teacher for MAT 121 and 151. He gave homework, but it wasn't mandatory. I never did my homework, esp in 121. My class was monday-thurs, so we would have a quiz monday, notes tue/wed, and then group work/attendence on thursday. I got a B with never studying. Once you get used to his accent, his class is pretty easy.
Awesome teacher! he really is good at helping you understand the mechanisms in basic calc
Phong Chau is really nice and understanding. His class is pretty easy but if you have any questions he is really good about answering them promptly.
teaches the material very well so that students can understand. not technical like other instructors or the book. must understand material before taking test, but overall good prof
Test questions were very similar to reviews and he gave extra credit on almost all tests. The only difficult parts of the class were a take-home test that was very time consuming and the final exam (which he curved). Anyone that does the homework and puts the time into the class should get an A. Great professor.
Plain and simple...Chau effin rules
Extremely helpful and extremely intelligent. One of the greatest math teachers I have ever had the pleasure of having. Class material and test material very similar.
really helpful and a good teacher.
Dr.Chau, is a very patient man, very willing to help his students. He makes Calc approachable, I enjoyed his class
Excellent teacher. Made diff eq easy. He was very clear and gave you easy steps to follow. Only the take home test was challenging all the others weren't too hard. As long as you are good in math and do the suggested homework it will be an easy A.
Chau is one of the best professors at GCC. He is an excellent instructor, goes out of his way to be helpful , and made learning calculus a dream. If you want to learn calculus, then take Chau.
Dr. Chau is a fantastic teacher, with a very unique sense of humor. He explains hard concepts in a way that makes it easy to understand.
Took him this summer was a great course! Funny guy very helpful also curved a few tests, maybe just cause it was a summer course and we needed it but who knows. Passes with a B.. by the end of this class you'll hate the word derivative
He makes difficult subjects easy. He is very helpful and goes step by step. Strongly recommended
He is a very nice guy! He is very interested in his subject. He is also available for tutoring in the Math Solutions center. He also will give you partial credit for problems you get wrong on tests. He does not offer extra credit though, which a lot of the students in this class needed. He is willing to help everyone and offers a lot of review time
Dr Chau`s is great professor i am taking 212 i make the class so simple to understand, and he explain in so many way that will make the concept more simple great professor
Dr.Phong makes Calc understandable, and has a sense of humor. He is nice guy, will answer your questions, and make sure you ask questions on assignments you don't understand; don't fall be behind.
he makes calculus as easy as possible. he explains the topics very well and reviews before every test
He is the best math teacher I've ever had, makes calculus easy
Mr. Chau is really nice. I took him for Calc and even though I already had a background in calculus, he helped me understand topics that I didn't before. He'll say a joke from time to time making the class feel a little bit more comfortable. He isn't very personal. He won't try to remember your name which is fine with me.
This is a hybrid class and he is not really lecturing, but he is extremely helpful when I have questions. With his help, I pass the class with an A. Just to be aware that this is NOT a traditional class, don't expect lectures from him. Instead, be active and ask lots of questions, he will come to you and explain the concepts thoroughly.
I am taking this hybrid class with him. He is excellent when explaning a math concept that makes it easy for me to comprehend. Just grap him when you need, don't be afraid to ask him questions and you will succeed.
I took the course in the summer at GCC, so it was very fast paced. He is a very good teacher though, and is generous with his grading. I would recommend him.
Was very helpful, structures class based on notes and homework is a must! Fair with grading. Summer is VERY fast past. Not recommended unless you can keep up. SIT in the front if you want to be more active.
He is a nice guy and also a good teacher.. But the materials are extremely hard. I took his class during the summer and it was very difficult. I don't recommend taking this class over the summer unless you're willing to spend 5 hours doing the homework.
Dr Chau is great! I took his class last semester and I really enjoyed it. I was very scared to take calculus because I haven't taken math for so long. Dr chau made it very easy! He never gets mad when someone asks him a question.. He's always willing to help! My favorite professor of all time!
This guy is the best math professor ever!! I enjoying attending his class!.. You want to lean calculus? Take his class!.. Thanks Dr Chau for being an amazing professor
Dr. Chau is one of the most qualified professors I've experienced..Dr. Chau enjoys what he does and it shows. I look forward to more classes from him.
Very clear and structured course. I was worried I wouldn't do so great because it's Calculus but Dr. Chau is an amazing instructor! He is very helpful aswell and willing to explain further. Take his class!
He is an amazing professor, and you can tell he loves his job!! He made an intimidating course understandable, and exciting!! Thank you Dr. Chau!
Dr. Chau is a great guy and an awesome professor. He is always willing to make sure that you understand what he is teaching. I wouldn't want to take the class with anyone else.
chau is the greatest. very clear but you must use the book
Dr.Chau is an excellent teacher. He uses powerpoint to assist, i.e. equations to know on the slides, and does the example on the board. HW is issued via book & doesn't use webassign; your grade falls on your test performance. Calc-2 is tough and don't expect to magically learn all the material overnight. FYI "Cal-1" IS NOTHING LIKE CAL-2; Ch 7&8 :/
Phong is the bomb. Not only is his name fun to say but he is seriously, SERIOUSLY, a nice teacher who wants you to do well! (Online anyways.)
Calc-2 is tough, but Dr. Chau is an excellent professor to prepare you for Diff EQ. Dr.Chau, uses a slide show, in addition to example on the board; will drop the lowest test score. Trust me if you have to take Diff EQ, take Dr.Chau for Calc-2
Before i took Calc 1, i was really scared by it, but having Dr. Chau as my professor, he really made it understandable, ironically, i enjoy this class more than i did with Trig. Lots of homework and i enjoyed taking the tests in the math solutions, giving me more time to study which has improved my grade in his class. He is fantastic!!!
This class is going to be hard no matter who you take it with. Mr Chau is a fantastic professor and makes this class worth taking under him, he will help you whenever you need it to make sure you understand the concepts, there are no curveballs on his tests, purely knowledge covered in class. Great professor.
when he teaches, he knows what he's talking about.
Mr.Chau is an amazing teacher, he puts everything in the simplest term.
good teacher, calc 2 is a hard class but he makes the class tolerable. his test are pretty hard but if you prepare yourself by doing the review sheet he gives not too bad. this class requires a lot of practice and hard work, chau is a good teacher I would recommend for anyone taking calc, calc 2 or higher
Professor Chau is a great math teacher. He clearly explains difficult concepts and always illustrates with good examples. Do the homework for practice. I would recommend him to anyone.
He's a good teacher. Some of my friends complained about his accent, but it's find for me. No notes allowed during the test. But his test will be easy if you worked hard in textbook homework. He will drop your lowest exam grade. So, try to do well on the first five ones and you don't have to take the final exam which will cover the whole course.
He is a good teacher. He is helpful and gives good reviews for the tests. He also gives some good opportunities to do some extra credit or adds some extra credit on the tests.
Great Teacher!
if you care about you GPA dont take this class online with him - he is no help and My grade was a 94% until i took my final(i was super sick when i took it and he doesnt give you a second chance to retake it. i ended up getting a 63% on my final which was unlike me in that class. my grade went to88% final grade but he gave me a C! Not cool!!!!!!
I took professor Chau's class for summer and it was fairly easy, you get 5 chances to the chapter, tests, and quizzes and it saves highest score. Midterm and final were proctored but the review (which you can do repeatedly) is very similar to both tests. Only down side is you have to get a 60% on the final in order to pass the class.
I took Dr. Chau's class over an 8 week summer course and although it is a lot of material to learn in only 8 weeks, his powerpoint lectures are clear and concise. Homework was not mandatory, but if you want to receive a good grade, it is best you do it. His tests are fair, you either know the material or you don't. Dr. Chau knows his math.
Cal 2 is tough, but Dr. Chau is an excellent professor to prepare you for Diff Eq. Dr. Chau, uses a slide show, in addition to example on the board;
horrible !!! doesn't explain good he doesn't let you take notes there is no text books he just solves problems on the board doesn't care if you fail or not doesn't care if you don't understand what he is teaching. is very rude stares at you like he is disgusted. never take his class if you wan to get to your degree hes class made me fall far
Calculus 2 has a lot of information to absorb in a short period of time. Dr. Chau is very thorough with the sections he teaches. Do not be afraid to ask questions or even give a wrong answer in class. Dr Chau was able to interpret how I got the answers I said and give positive correction. Do all of the homework, test reviews, and extras and excel!
do you all the test reviews in calculus two and you'll pass but he is a tough grader leaves you feeling like he doesn't want you to get a good grade
He is my best math professor I have ever had!
You definitely need to go to class as the material is hard, but his test are easy. There's no word problems or anything on the tests all the questions are straightforward. He's really nice
He is amazing! I really enjoyed his class and his teaching style. I will say, that taking Calc 2 in a 7 week condensed course over summer is really hard! And I took another class, too, that made it very difficult for me to stay on top of everything. I wish I could have had him during a regular semester!
His notes are very precise and straight forward. His tests don't have word problems(and sometimes have extra credit)and are pretty easy if you review. He's a bit of a tough grader, so be careful. His homework is easy and can be redone to get a 100. While the material is pretty hard, he makes the class pretty simple and easy to follow.
he is the best professors i ever had
you can hardly understand him , he does the examples on the board too fast and he's a really tough grader even when the answer is correct because he wants heavy and specific work that needs to be shown on each equation even if its ( 2+6) he still wants you to show work .
Professor Chau is a great math teacher and he explains the topics well and his tests are fair. You must do the homework to succeed especially in a difficult class like calc 2. Attendance is graded too. I wish he taught Calc 3 too, I would definitively take his class again.
Hands down one of the best math professors I've ever had. Was always willing to work with students until the material and course work was well understood. You have to work for a good grade, but you will definitely earn it and walk away knowing calc 2 like the back of your hand.
Chau teaches Calc 2 in a concise yet effective way. His notes were extremely helpful, even to the point of not having to read the book that much. Calc 2 is hard, so expect to work hard for your grade. He is very knowledgeable on the subject and will gladly help outside of class. He is kind and funny too.
Chau is a really great teacher. He explains problems/examples good and if you have any questions while he is explaining he would be more than pleased to clear any confusions. He does have an accent but it is understandable. He tries his best to keep the class entertaining and fun. So far he is one of the best math teachers I had.
I had the pleasure of taking Mr. Chau class every weekday at 1000 for 16 weeks in the Spring of 2018. This class is hard, so if you do not understand something clarify it with Chau becuase the tutors in the math solution will not always to be able to help you.
Great teacher and has fair grading criteria. Study guides are usually harder than the test themselves. Will spend more time on difficult sections if necessary to explain concepts.
By far, Professor Chau is an awesome professor, He has a great teaching style. Professor Chau is willing to go above and beyond for his students to learn the materials. Professor Chau is one of the best individual I have seen so far.
Seems like a nice enough guy that knows his stuff and really likes math. Be aware however that if you take the class online he uses MyMathLab by Pearson. The 30+ hours you spend on mandatory course work and homework only counts for 10 points. The final can and will destroy your grade if you do poorly on it despite walking in with 90% or more.
I took his Calculus 2 class during the summer. The class moves very quickly, 2-3 different lessons/topics each day. He explains concepts very thoroughly using both examples and how formulas are derived. Both his notes and study guides reflected what would be on the exams on each unit.
Definitely one of the best math teachers Ive had in a while. He gives detailed lectures and doesnt make you feel dumb for asking questions. Its not an easy class but if you actually do the homework youll be okay.
STOP!!!!!. Take him, the way he introduces his chapters is 100X better than the others.( TRUST ME )He has an accent that doesnt matter when it comes to pronouncing mathematical terms . His Homework contains the exam questions .If you can do the HW with just a calculator, piece of paper and a pencil , then you can expect an A. THE MATERIAL IS HARD
Really good teacher.
This professor was awesome!! Always willing to answer questions in class and from the homework.
He is very knowledgeable and clearly cares about your education. He covered all of the necessary material in lectures, and the HW complements the material really well. He will work with you if you are having trouble understanding concepts, and will even drop the lowest test grade at the end. The content is difficult but will prepare for calc 2.
Probably the best math teacher I've had. Super clear. He covers things at the very basic level, so it's not as difficult on the larger scale.
Excellent professor, definitely explains to the best of his ability everything he can and breaks it down before introducing more complex examples.
Very great professor. He wants to explain the reasoning behind an idea or formula when he can which is very helpful but also gives great examples.
Mr. Chau seems like a good professor but Stay away from this course! Youll have to use MymathLab to do all the tests and homework. Homework is excessive. 20-30 problems is ok. Not 40-70. The proctored exams are tough and you can only use a scientific calculator. Save your GPA and take another MAT 151 course
Dr. Chau is a competent professor and he doesn't have any glaring faults as a lecturer or teacher. He'll answer your questions to the best of his ability and I never walked out of class feeling like I couldn't do any of the problems we'd gone over. It's possible to pass this class without doing much of the homework, but I don't recommend it.
Professor Chau is awesome! Just do your part as a student such as homework and studying. BTW take your homework seriously, it could possibly be the difference between a letter grade at the end of the semester.
Great professor
Very great professor, lectures are completely necessary to attend, and by doing that your good to go.
Teacher takes half a week to respond to any questions, his responses are unhelpful. The syllabus had a lot of errors. Dr. Chau seems sloppy and uncommitted, and when he makes a mistake, he tends to attempt to sweep the problem under the rug.
The final exam had NOTHING to do with the practice review. The math lab was okay because you had available resources, such as the e-book, tutors, and the internet. It was a very difficult course, and him not replying to his students, made the experience so much more worse that it already was. He does not communicate or make the effort.
GIVES THOROUGH EXPLANTATIONS ON PROBLEMS SO YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT
I like it!
It's true that if you don't pass the final you won't pass the class. It's also true that the practice final isn't a carbon copy of the final exam. You'll pass as long as you really understand all of the material and concepts that were covered in the homework and other tests. The final was like a mish-mash of all of the topics together.
For those who need more explanation in math, he's such a good professor. He's super innocent & sweet (people take advantage of that). His classes are 5 credits, so you'll have to show up. He grades extremely fairly; if you show work you will ALWAYS get partial credit. Test & quiz heavy, but as an anxious test-taker, they're nothing to worry about.
I did not enjoy this professor seeing as he never answered any of my emails, which were very important. Why instruct an online class if you're not going to reply to your students?
Highly recommended professor. Don't skip class. Make sure you take care of all your hw on time, It really helps to stay on track and that way you have time to study for the tests.
This professor is very nice. Although the class was a bit challenging for me, as long as you do your homework and pay attention you should be fine. Not many tests but we do have weekly quizzes. Make sure you study because they will catch up to you.
Class lectures were clear and in-depth. Dr. Chau made difficult concepts easy to understand. He provided the most effective and practical methods to get solutions.
The material is challenging. However, if you go to class and do the homework you should be fine. Dr. Chau makes difficult concepts easy to understand and presents material in a clear way. I always left class feeling capable in solving the problems we went over in class.
If you want to challenge yourself and understand the material, this is your teacher. He is all about understanding the concept of mathematics. Be prepared to do 900 plus problems with a ti89, pencil and lots of paper. His lecture is clear and effective, homework problems are hard and test problems are slightly less harder than the homework.
Save yourself from taking his online course for Mat 121. Doesnt matter how well you do on homework and other test, if you do not pass the final you will not pass the class. Save you GPA, and sanity and stay as far away as you can.
Hes great at teaching the material, but not so good at replying to emails.
I've taken Dr. Chau for Calc 2 and 3. He's one of the best math teachers at GCC. He lectures in a way that makes you understand the material. His grading criteria is very fair, just expect to study a lot if you want that A.
Professor Chau in person is great. However, when the class was switched to an online format I saw a drop in the quality of instructing I was forced to learn things on my own and despite getting a 99% in my homework average I still didn't do well. He wont bump up any grades so you get what you get. Also his email replies were slow. Challenging class
Hes a really tough grader. Have to show work on all tests. Grade is based on the proof of work not correct answers. Doesnt communicate quickly and sometimes not at all.
I took this course online due to COVID-19. His response to doing online was that he didn't have to teach. We only needed the textbook and homework assignments. He never offered a schedule or a clear grading policy, and trying to reach out was impossible. He changed the testing software every test and if something breaks on the software, Good Luck.
This professor is a good professor, but He is a TOUGH teacher! I would suggest taking him if you want to succeed in dif-eq, but if this is your last class or second to last math class, don't take, find someone better. I like him because he is available in his office and is willing to talk to you and help you if you get stuck. engineers should take!
He is a nice teacher, it's just the subject. I heard other teachers on the campus were chill, and you got to do better on the test, but he did well for me, i just didn't pay attention.
