If you're bad at math, DON'T TAKE HER!!! Not a very fair grader either.
She really knows what she's doing. Will explain or help whenever needed!
Clear but tough-must go to class. Knows her stuff. not the most friendly.
EVIL!!! Hard, hard, hard!!!
Assigns way too much homework for a 200 level class
She grades super hard, but she makes learning fun, and cares about how you do
explains material well w/ handouts, likes to use tricky wording on quiz & exams
Worst Prof I've ever had.
Knows her stuff, no bell curve with her, she demands a lot for a 200 level class
She demands too much for a lower level class. She is not very helpful.
Good but tough teacher
Not difficult but alot of work. She's a good teacher, always willing to help.
Very hard, tons of work, hard grader, dont take her if you dont have to
sta 216 says 3 credits...try 5 with her! As much work as calc1
you have to be an expert to do well, very picky on grading.
very nice, very helpful. do all your work and you'll do good. try to get her
if your taking stats, try someone else.
She is a good prof, but gives tons of work, should be more than 3 credits the wa
If you have her, stab yourself in the neck now, save the torture.

GO TO HER OFFICE! She will help
HARD, picky grader, this is a difficult class, she tries her best
She's a great teacher you just have to visit her office to keep on track.
a TON of work for 215. Picky grader, but helpful and friendly.
Three words: GO TO CLASS!!!
She is great at explaining stats, but can be very boring. Watch out for exams!
i think she's one of those teachers that wants you to fail
Run for your life and GPA
Pretty good teacher but definately a pickey grader.
keep up and you will do fine, good at explaining, speaks english
Picky grader. . .nasal OK s. . . .she has intent to help you in stats

I have learned more with her than anyone else. Tough prof but worth it.
3 credit class? coulda fooled me...try 9 credits. be smart, don't ruin your
forgets that people take more than just her class!

This class will eat up hours of your week if you want to do well. HUGE time commitment, if you have other hard classes, get out of here while you still can.
Because of her I dropped out of college and pump gas at Shell station. Absolutely horrible.
We have a group project, individual programming project, and another separate homework due on the same day, which is the day after we have a major exam and a few days before our final exam...nuff said.
This semester I have four A's and one C, in her class. I now know LESS about statistics then I did at the start of the semester. She does do a good job of convining statistics majors to change programs though. Don't ever take her if at all possible.

Considers doing a group lab in a group of people cheating...how does that work?!? She piles on homework like we have 0 classes or life. The average amount of time I spent outside of school working on homework for this class was about 10 hours.
I didn't think the class was too tough. There was definately a time committment, but if you paid attention and took good notes, it was a breeze. She was willing to help out a lot if you just asked her! Lets you use note sheets on the exams.
I enjoy uncontrollable diarhea more than her class.
Phyllis is a tough prof, but one of the nicest you'll find. Prepare to do a lot of work, but also be ready to actually KNOW the stuff when you're done.
Mrs. Curtiss is a wonderful teacher! She expects her students to come to class and do a lot of work, but we're all adults and it's a reasonable request. Take her if you really want to learn the material. She is available for help all the time.
very hard prof. she expects a lot of work from you, she does make herself available a lot in order to help though. expect at least 2 hrs/hr of class for homework & projects. be sure to do good on the homeworks because the tests are very hard.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. That's all I can say.
She may be eye candy, but Statistics isn't my bag. Not a fun class-probably not her fault.
Took summer class-6 weeks!Tons of work!Do the work=get an'A'.Great handouts u can use on final!Take her and you'll learn this is a biased and inaccurate reflection of her teaching ability. Only whiners seem to rate her. I recommend her, but do homework!
Extremely hard class, but good prof. You'll learn a lot, but if you don't have 20+ hrs/week to spend on this, take another prof.
this prof sucks, if it delays you a year to drop her it is worth it
Not the best....nor the worst
She isn't that hard if you have a lot of time to spend on STATS, but if you are like me and realize STATS has nothing to do with your career, don't take her. Very unclear about what she wants and tries to trick students on exams.
Looks like she belongs in a bar. Love ya Momma P. from the 412 gang.
This class is very hard. She gives you a lot of ungraded homework, but you have to do it in order to know whats going on.There's projects and computer work in this class also. You'll get an assignment every class.
She is very helpful but gives a lot of homework. If you do the homework and attend class you will do fine.
She expects a lot out of you! But she is a very fair teacher who respects the students.
I think she's a good professor, I learned a great deal. As far as homework goes, yes you can expect it every class period, however for a class as complicated as this and for as much material is covered the homework, you will find is very useful.
One of my favorite professors at GVSU. Every department should have a professor like her. Really cares for her students. A MUST GET for any stats class. Thanks for the year Mama P
Very confusing exams and quizes, lots of hw, unclear teacher and goes fairly quick when doing examples on the board, I wish i had not taken her, and would not recommend taking her
Profesor Curtiss truely loves her field (which is good because no-body loves stat.) The pace of the class is challenging, but she is thourough. I am not a math peroson and just did fine, primarially because of Phyllis. Expect some serious homework.
After taking a five month vacation to do nothing important, she thinks she can just stroll back in here and run the show. We still lova ya' Mama P. Former STA 412&415 duo
She's not very nice, doesn't really attempt to get to know the students at all. Its crazy and I just farted
The class is very hard, and she does not know how to teach very well.
Interesting prof, If you can get someone else do it, otherwise she's not too bad, just brutally boring.
Take her, you'll learn your stuff and she has a very fare grading system.
Verry Good! Grades Hard, fun questions! Jokes are not funny tho.
STOP KISSING HER ASS SHE CANT HEAR U AND U DONT HAVE TO FEEL BAD FOR SAYING THAT SHE IS WAY TO PICKY WITH HER GRADING AND ABOUT THE ONLY HELPFUL THING SHE EVER DID WAS LET US DO GROUP PROJECTS WICH SUCKED IF UR PARTNER WAS A FLIPPIN IDIOT
Doesn't understand we don't all love Stats. Keeps stressing we should all be stats majors/minors, but meanwhile picks our homework and labs appart. "Lab time" is a joke, it's simply more lecture time where she jumps through stuff without actually teaching you, she just gives you examples.
Says she is willing to help, but when approached seems angry that you dared to ask a question. Can be rather rude in class to the poor souls who are obviously lost.
Way too much work for a 200 level course. Acts eager to help but when you go to her office she makes you feel like you're wasting her time. Expects perfection.
If your IS take STA 318 instead, they created it because profs like Curtiss make 216 WAY too hard. She expects more daily work than most 400 lvl courses and doesn't return the effort. Expects you to have memorized everything in 215 and then winds up going through the new stuff faster than the review stuff anyway.
VERY UNCLEAR. Way to hard for a 200 level class. She is very smart, but goes through the material way to fast. Picks apart homework/labs/tests for stupid little mistakes. DO NOT TAKE HER unless you are a stats major.
I liked Dr. Curtiss. I just finished the class today and it's the best I've ever done in any kind of math class. The tests were a bit hard but overall the assignments were easy and they helped weigh out the tests, so if your not good wtih tests, this is a good class. She's also easy to communicate with through email when you need help.
Like the others said, way too hard for a 200 level class. Way too much work, way too pickey over stupid stuff, and not clear at all.
She will not teach you. You are expected to teach yourself, and then after you struggle to turn in atime consuming assignment, she explains things-very backwards. Also, she has a grader, so she does not teach OR grade, what exactly is she getting paid for? The material is valuable but unless you can teach yourself a foreign it will very difficult
I really like her. She's one of those professors that spells out everything you need to know, so you can take good notes. Her tests make sure you know the material, but they're not hard. Only uses the book for practic homework problems, and she tells you which homework assignments are going to be graded, there aren't any surprises or pop-quizzes.
I really liked her. I thought she was extremely organized and usually spells out exactly what is important material to know. I really enjoy her class and I think she is a good professor to take for a Stats 215 class.
Gives very complete notes and really gives good detail in homework and tests for what she is expecting. A little bit of work, but you learn a lot, and its easy if you go to class.
Phyllis is a great professor. She's a tough grader and she expects a lot from you, but in the end you benefit from it. I would recommend her for any stat class. Easy to contact outside of class and is always willing to help if she can!
Professor Curtiss is a great Statistics Professor! She gives great notes and handouts that are easy to study from. She is very strict about make up tests though so don't plan on missing any. Overall great teacher especially if it's the first time you've ever taken a stats class.
She is one of the worst professors I have ever had, undergraduate or graduate. The students do not learn a thing from her. You could learn more if you were self taught.
Prof. Curtiss is a great teacher, as long as you understand the basics of 5th grade math you should do just fine. Exams and quizzes are a little tough, but if you go to class and study a little you should be just fine. She goes out of her way to help if you ask!
Homework and exams are pretty hard, and she can be a pretty picky grader, but it's worth it. She is definately a good professor and you'll learn a lot.
She is very helpful during office hours. Gives formula sheets to use during exams. Stickler for proper statistical notation, will dock points. Very clear lecture style. Great teacher.
Professor Curtiss is one of the best professors I've ever had! She expects you to know your stuff but if you get used to "Curtiss standards" you will always do well in other stats classes. Not just a blow off class, you are expected to work but it's all worth it in the end. Take her if you can!
She is a really difficult professor, I probably could have learned a lot but we had soo many assignments and quizzes that it made me hate the class.
312 can be difficult at times, but phyllis has lots of handouts and examples. She can be incredibly picky on exams...like if you choose to integrate to find E(x) when you could have used another shorter formula, you lose points, even if you get the correct answer. she expects everything to be done like she would do it when ther are other ways!
Prof. Curtiss is probably one of the most clear and organized professors that I've had. You will learn a lot in this class.
Very picky but great professor. Organized and clear
Excellent professor! She presents the material very, very well. Highly recommended for Design of Experiments.
OMG expect to be having mutiple homeworks assigned every class that you will spend hours on. i have never had to work so much for one class in my life. its also extremly hard to find how to do things when you are out of class and if u make one mistake she will notice. the take home exam she gave worth like 1/4 of the final took me roughly 6-8 hours
Strict but great. Lot's of homework though
DO NOT TAKE HER FOR 216! I can see why she would be good for higher level stats, but not for 216! She tries to separate the statistic majors from the non. She is unorganized and does not explain things clearly AT ALL!
Loved having her for 216! I thought her class was enjoyable, but expect to do a lot of work every week...it's really the only way you can learn the material. If you come to class, take notes, and do the all the assigned work, you'll do well. BIggest advice: don't skip.
If you go to class, take good notes, do the homework, make your formula sheets for exams, you'll not only learn a lot, but also get a good grade! Take her.
She is an amazing professor. Minimal graded assignments and they help boost your grade. Her exams are very fair and you get a large cheat sheet from her. Take her if your willing to go to class you will get a good grade!
I thought that she made things very easy to understand. She basically gives you a sheet for the exams with everything that you need on it. One of the best professors I've had here at GV.
I've been a student at Grand Valley for 7 years now. I have taken a class with almost every senior stats prof in the department. Dr. Curtiss is hands down the most inspiring prof I have ever had while at GV. I walked out her class miles ahead of where I was previously. She works harder than anyone else in regards to prepping for her lectures.
She makes statistics very easy to understand. Not a lot of homework. Very good teacher. Always willing to help and meet during office hours. Highly recommend. You will learn. Grades fair. Tests and quizes are always announced before. Extra credit. Great class.
Was a very helpful and organized professor. Announced dates for everything and always had exams graded by the next class period. She is very clear and easy to follow when she is teaching. Take her whenever you have the chance!
She grades pretty strict. However, she gives out a ton of extra credit because she is very aware of how rigid her grading is. Try not to skip because even though she gives out a lot of handouts, they're almost always incomplete because she writes notes on the board. You get a note sheet for each exam(3 sheets for final).
Prof Curtiss is extremely under-rated. She is a great prof. She is very helpful and want to see her students succeed. As long as you show up to class on a consistent basis, there is no excuse to get less than an A.
I feel that Professor Curtiss is a very underrated professor, she is very helpful, offers a ton of extra credit and really wants you to do well in the class. The class was really not that hard, I would recommend her again.
Very confident and challenging professor. STA 315 is challenging class so be prepared to put some work in and attend class. Professor Curtiss is a tough, picky grader but thoroughly teaches the material. Weekly assignments are just like handouts and tests are reasonable if you prepare. WOULD TAKE HER AGAIN!
Curtiss is a really confident professor, but is a very picky grader. I'm an A student and had to work for this grade. Weekly hw assignments using SAS and SPSS take a few hours and must be very specific. Her tests are tough but she lets you bring a cheat sheet. DON'T SKIP; you won't pass.
Dr. Curtiss definitely makes you work for an A, doesn't cut much slack. She's a VERY picky grader, so your grade might suffer at first until you get used to it. Cheat sheets for the exams, but exams are LONG so you have to know what you're doing. Homework takes hours. If you don't have any real interest in stats, don't take her. You learn a lot.
She knows stats in and out and can teach it really well. She expects you do know it really well too and due to that she can be a very strict and picky grader. She has an open door policy - stop by and she'll give you all the help you need. Expect to work really hard and do all the extra credit opportunities because she doesn't curve anything.
She is a very nice professor but makes the work very confusing at times if you don't have a background in Statistics. I highly recommend going to class everyday because she goes over a lot of material in every lecture. Very knowledgeable in statistics, great for stats majors.
This professor is an extremely hard grader. Although she may be very knowledgeable of statistics, she is very particular and grades harshly. Expect a lot of homework. There are a few quizzes and a few tests; however, they are tough. I really worked hard for my grade in this class. I was not a fan of this prof, and would not choose her again.
Dr. Curtiss is an excellent professor. She knows the material inside and out and will do everything to ensure you get as much from the class as possible. She expects you to work for your grade- which I appreciate. Tough grading and high expectations are what have shaped me into the statistician I am. I have had her for STA315 & STA317.
Curtiss is a wonderful stats teacher and always willing to help out if you're stuck, but she teaches like a grizzled vet of some stats-based war. She is VERY tough and expects you to put in the effort. She is strict when it comes to homework and effort.
I enjoyed having Dr. Curtiss as a professor. She knows statistics like the back of her hand. She can be a bit of a tough grader but once you understand what she wants, then you should be able to meet her criteria. She offers A LOT of extra credit so take advantage. As long as you go to class, pay attention, & make an effort, you will succeed.
I loved this class! The median grade for our class at the end was a 90%. This class was very challenging, but she provides every possible opportunity to help you succeed. Expect to get a similar grade that you have in most tough math classes like Calc 1 and 2. Go to the study sessions! Start your HW early! You will be fine, I promise.
Curtiss will do her best to help you succeed. You can tell she really has a passion for teaching.
There was a lot of material covered each class so it would be tough to skip any classes. Prof Curtiss is a tough grader but she does a good job explaining everything. The class was fairly tough as a whole but I would recommend
Tough material for this class but she does a good job of explaining things. She can be kind of boring at times but yet again it is stats. Very particular on her grading but if you put the effort in you should be okay. I'd recommend her
As a math major, I have encountered many good and bad professors. Specifically in the stats department, there are mostly bad. However, if you want a great professor that teaches the material well, cares for her students, and offers lots of extra credit(TAKE HER)! You do need to attend class regularly to do well, but that is like any other class.
This woman is an angel. I always looked forward to her class. I only have good things to say. She loves her students and is clearly passionate about educating and is not authoritarian like a lot of the professors I had this year. She really wants to make sure her students understand the material. She is very personable and engaging.
Curtiss does not mess around. This content is difficult and she works it. She keeps everything well organized and teaches thoroughly. She genuinely cares whether or not EVERY student is understanding the material. Had a classmate fall behind and SHE reached out to all of us to support said student. Warms my heart. She is exemplary. Nothing but good
Professor Curtiss is an outstanding instructor for STA412/15. This goes to say that the material is no joke. There will be HOURS going over lecture and material. New material is constant and it is crucial to stay on course. Dr. Curtiss helps explains any questions concisely and takes her own time for those struggling - including myself. A real gem.
Prof Curtiss is truly the best professor I have had at GV. Thats to say though this class is no joke. Its very hard, but she truly cares and wants you to learn the material. She's very thorough and teaches really tough material in the best way possible. Whatever you do, go to class, take the notes, and study study study!
Prof Curtis is clear in lectures and gives lots of examples to help you understand the material. She knows all the information like the back of her hand and is willing to answer any of your questions. Although she is a tough grader, she gives lots of extra credit chances. She truly cares about you succeeding in her class. I highly Recommend!!
TAKE PROFESSOR CURTISS. The content is hard, but she is an incredible teacher. She is very educated and very passionate about what she is teaching, if it wasn't for her I wouldn't have passed this class. There is a few exams, but just make sure you attend class and you'll be just fine, she also offers lots of extra credit if you fall behind.
Fantastic job teaching this material
Dr Curtiss is a fantastic professor and a wonderful person
Professor Curtiss really knows the material she teaches, which is more than I can say for other professors. While there may be quite a bit of homework assignments, the class is not too difficult, overall. She provides great feedback and offers extra credit a few times throughout the year. I would highly suggest her class.
Professor Curtiss is very smart and caring in her classes! She really knows her stuff, and she's very fluent in teaching the content. She can be a little blunt sometimes, but overall she's a nice lady and very respected! Attendance isn't mandatory, but I suggest going as there are quizzes almost every week. She cares about her students a lot:)
Dr. Curtiss is a brilliant mind and an even better teacher. The content is difficult, but she takes the time to give out handouts with fill in the blanks and many examples. If you go to class, you will succeed, but this class requires you to put in the effort to get the results. She can be harsh, but she wants the best for each student!!
Dr. Curtiss is a brilliant professor who really knows her stuff. The class is challenging, but she provides great support and resources. Attending lectures and using tools like unstuck study are key to succeeding. I'd highly recommend this course.
Decent overall teacher, just be sure to take any extra credit she gives you and to study your worksheets extra hard, most of the lecture has an attached work sheet to fill out during class - tough but fair
