I consider Mrs. Elmore to be a tough professor but its college. It's to be expected. She doesn;t just assign papers and say,"Here go do!". She offers help and there is several prewriting assignments before the assignment sheet is actually given.
Dr. Elmore is probably one of the more difficult teachers at NL. She is an extremely smart woman and taught me a great deal about American and British literature. She was my favorite professor while I was at NL. 'Go Away!' ^_^
Tough tough tough...not fair on grading...she does not help at all and can lecture her own subject over and over again...very smart lady, but also unfair grading, I could have done a lot better and made and A with another English teacher...stay away..

Unfair when it comes to grading, and so unwilling to help. I have never gotten less than an A on any English paper, yet never managed above a B in her class. I had my papers re-graded by my old college professor, and even he noticed how unfair the grading was. Stay away...make her "go away."
Extremely hard professor, especially since I had her for composition 2. If it wasn't for her high demands and 8 papers, i would not have the great writing skills that I had today nor the patience to write 15 pg papers and prepare my grad portfolio. Thankyou Dr. Elmore.
Dr. Elmore, Means Bizzness-she really does not care about people's opinions. She corrected a lot of my papers-and I apprct'd. It! I was learning w/out even realizing it. Take a hint-If an instrctr tells you to put a timeline of the Fridge-so ur assgnments are not late-They mean bizness.
Very biased. Very opinionated. Has a real problem with anyone who disagrees with her ideas, even in a paper, no matter how well it is written. If she doesnt like you, no amount of writing skill or studying will help you. Even if you aren't on her bad list, look out for a painful semester.
Super rude. She critiqued our papers without giving them back. She just made comments via email. Her emails were so full of typing errors, spelling errors, and grammer errors, that it was difficult to comprehend at times. She is very brutal with her comments. I don't recommend her at all.
Simple enough: STAY AWAY, unless you are a suck-up with plenty of 'stupid,' questions to ask. If you are a decent writer and don't have any questions that make her feel superior...take another professor.
DR Elmore is very stuck in her ways. She challenges the student to do your best, but she can be very unclear and unfair at times. When you try to confront her abotu a problem she'll through her credentials at you. You have to have tuff skin to be in her class. I stayed just to prove I could pass. Keep a dictionary handy for her directions.
I agree with the comments of others. This is instructor was not clear. She even told me to buy the wrong book. The sylabus was a mess. It & her emails had typos & were confusing. Professors should practice what they teach. I also externally qualified the unfair grades/confusion, to make sure it was not just me. She was somewhat polite in email.

Never in my life have I had a problem with writing papers and getting good grades- until this class. Dr. Elmore picked apart every little thing in my paper, which is not bad unless you feel that they make it their goal to give you a bad grade. I got a C in
Incredibly rude and confrontational. Talks very quickly and always appears stressed out. Unforgiving, uncaring, and unmerciful. I doubt that she has any emotions other than anger.

this woman is unreal...she posts instructions for the same paper in 3 different places with different directions in each. and yes, she definitely has her own opinions and doesn't like it when you take a position that doesn't agree with her own. hard to take advice from a teacher that has spelling and grammatical errors in her own communications
Dr. Elmore has YRS. of experience but little patience. Highly recommend for English or History majors. Attendance and communication is BIG to her. Gives a lot of "busy work", but it allows her to grade & give students' papers back quickly which is nice. You will learn alot, but definitely not get an easy A.
Very difficult for a freshman english prof.
Ms. Elmore holds a chip on her shoulder. She teaches at a University level. She is a strickler when it comes to the 5:00 deadline for homework. I had to drop her class because I was going to fail it. I have never received less than a C in a class. I would advise anyone not to ever take her class.
She didn't treat this class like a freshman level class but more like an arena to prove something about her teaching. NEVER take her class via internet. She has multiple explanations for directions & doesn't really answer questions; she'll even take what you say/ask personally, for no good reason.
She hates everyone who breathes. Very hard and unreasonable and incredibly biased. Really dislikes all the white kids. Homework will keep you busy every night of the week with out taking any other classes. Should REALLY be fired.
The most difficult class I ever took. She expects us to perform at graduate class level. Didn't like this class at all.

I hated her class. I took it online and she never clearly stated what she wanted, and when you returned your paper she tears it to shreads and doesn't tell you what you did wrong. She expects way to much out of an English 1 class.
Dr. Elmore is a hard but good professor who will take the time to help you if you are dedicated to your work. You can't slack off in her class. It's cool that she is opinionated because for god sakes, we are all in college and we should be able to take some criticism.
I would not recomend this teacher to anyone who is taking two or more classes. you will have enough work to do in a whole semester with this class. she is very hard. is you want to test your skills go with her... difficult class... but you learn from it...
Should be fired. I don't what grade you're in, this kind of behaviour is NOT acceptable. My son would get sent to time out for outbursts like she has.

I had a horrible time with this teacher. She is completely unhelpful. She has no concept of teaching. It's either her way or it's wrong. PERIOD. Take the advice of the other postings...stay away from this class if you'd like to keep a good GPA. I've always been an A+ writer, and I was barely able to manage an low B average.

Would never recomend her. She didn't even show up for final, made us email it to her and gave us the incorrect email address. Very ignorant as to how to TEACH!!She forgets her role in the class is to help not put down students of other nationalities!! And she is rude!!
Horrible teacher. She would give me nearly perfect grades on my rough drafts, then would give me a lower grade even though I fixed the problem areas. Whenever I'd ask her why she counted off, even though I did what she asked, she wouldn't give me a straight answer. It was like talking to a wall. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS WOMAN!!!
I totally lucked out that the winterterm class got dropped due to low enrollment (it seems that everyone but me knew to stay away); I found another lit class @ RLC. The grade breakdown on her class was 2% A's; the one at RLC was 97% A's --- whew, kept my 4.0 safe!

WOW my class started with 35 people and at the final there was only 10 of us left she is super hard, super into literature, and did i mention super hard!!! i busted my butt of in that class and i still only made a "B" till This has been the hardest class i have ever taken!!!

Makes alot of typos and grammatical errors for someone who likes to mention their doctorate. She's racially biased, and seems as though she expects Harvard English major writing from junior college freshmen and sophomores. I do not recommend her, unless you are just really gung-ho for a challenge.

Yes, she is amazingly hard. I got a B in my 1301 class and then an A in the 1302 class. If you study, ask questions and show genuine desire to write better, this woman will make you a fantastic student. Ever since taking her classes multiple Prof's have commented on my work, with many assignments which are now used as "example" papers.
Hey folks, it was my wrong judgement to take this american literature class with her. Really its useless taking this class with her. Please do find other teacher rather than this one. The top grade you would get is C. So beaware taking this class with her or you will regret later.
I took her class online. She is tough, but I actually feel like I learned something useful from her. If you meet with her and show interest, she will tell you what she wants. She will make you work for it though.
This woman is the devil, she rides her broom to work every day. Her teaching style is poor at best, her grading style in unrealistic. Lastly, she is the most **** person in the class. Avoid her like the plague.
The professor is extremely rude and condescending. Simple questions was brushed off and left unanswered. Many of the "comments" left on the graded essays were misspelled and incoherent in meaning. Double standard at best.
Ok, I failed, but she's really a great teacher. She grades hard. So I suggest that if you want an easy 'A' DO NOT TAKE HER!! BUT if you're actually willing to work hard, then take her class. I am an entering law student whose last class of undergraduate studies was ENGL 1301. This woman is absolutely ludicrous. I presented several drafts for each paper and still received poor marks. When I approached her for assistance, she recommended that I come see her in her office. She was completely unhelpful! Don't take her...
SHE SUCKS!! She'll send you the grade for your paper with absolutely NO explanation as to why you got that grade. HORRIBLE

I consider myself a good writer. I made an 85 on the first paper. I spent so much time in writing lab and with her. I'm in my 40's. Very difficult class. Seems difficult, if not impossible, to make and A. She exudes hatred, and is condescending. That's her style. I agree with other posts. DONT TAKE THIS TEACHER.

I have to admit Dr. Elmore's class was easily the most difficult class I've taken; but one I appreciated. With her high expeectations, comes much hard work/effort. Enrolled in class enthusiatic and was immediately shot down. Her asgnmnt are clear as mud. When asked to expln she called me "PETULANT." I dropped class after 2nd week. The Dean supports her belittling of students. DON'T TAKE THIS PROF. Evil lives!
Glad you people think you have be black to pass her class, because I am black and she still ridiculed me, and after all my extremely hard work gave me a C that lowered my GPA tremendously:( It doesn't matter if your skin is red, white, blue, black, or green, she will treat you horrible and not allow you to get anything higher than a C. DROP NOW!
While I never do extremely well in English classes (though in my 1302 I got a B, even skipping the last paper) I was lucky to scrape by with my C. I spent almost two weeks on my final paper and I was given the worst grade of all of my papers. I found the less time I spent on my papers the better grade I got. This lady is hard, so run run run!
I have never failed an English Paper Till this class. Dr. Elmore sets out guidelines that she herself fails to follow. She wants you to fullfill one set of requirements only to condradict herself. AVOID CLASS like the plauge.

Dr. Elmore is very straight-forward about what she expects from her students. The work is somewhat challenging only because it requires a great deal of research. It is absolutely possible to pass this class with an "A" if you do the work!

Dr. Elmore is only hard for students who make little to no effort. I don't see how one of her students wouldn't be excited to write in her class. She is not a stuffy English teacher that asks you to write about your summer. I loved her class, and learned so much about being a better writer, as well as some history. Take her class and do the work!
I agree with the other post. Dr. Elmore is VERY straight forward about her expectations. I took a FasTrack class & BARELY passed. I am a very good writer and have always received compliments and nothing less than a B+ on a writing assignment until I took this class. If you're looking for an easy A, this is NOT the class for you!!!!

Her expectations are way too high. Gave her my paper before the assignment was due and she gave corrections. I changed every suggestion she had on the paper and after I turned it in, she totally picked it apart. She's awful. Please don't take her if you're trying to get an A...it's not going to happen.
Dr. Elmore needs to be removed from North Lake. By far one of the WORST teachers. She's not helpful and very mean. She only gives negative feedback and if your opinion differs from her you will fail that paper. She refuses to give people a good grade and does not appreciate her students efforts. VERY RUDE. INET class. Extremely high expectations for freshman comp. I SLAVE over papers, and the highest grade I've received is a B. Confusing! There's 3 directions/prompts and they all say diff things. Tons of typos in her notes. Hard to know if I've met the prompt or not. I'll be lucky to escape with a B! Even if I was an Eng major I wouldn't take her.
She is so rude. When I was trying to ask any help, she always cut my words. She thought she so proude of herself. Never take her class. You will get flustrated.
This teacher is not a teacher, but an instrument to fail students. The essay prompts differ from the textbook information, and the grading rubric. No matter how well written the assignment is you will still not get a good grade. Her feedback does not help, if you are lucky to get one. I do not recommend Dr. Elmore.

This was not an English course. She is not helpful and down right rude at times. The only thing that you will walk away with is that: Dr. Elmore cannot be intimidated (her words in her syllabus), she has been teaching for decades and that NOTHING you do will ever satisfy her, NOTHING!
Depressing, every essay was about starving people in other countries, black and white prejudice, stereotypes a black man percieved while walking home in New York, and other sad topics that were totally lame to even think about. shes rude and needs to see a therapist. dont take this course
Elmore is possibly the worst professor in the DCCCD area. She is rude and does not listen to the student's opinion. Do not try to email her with your own thoughts on your paper because she already has you figured out. Horrible horrible person and should not have the privilege of being called "professor".

All I can say is don't take her class. Because of her, I am about to fail a class I normally would not fail. This is the worst experience I have ever had with any class I have ever taken.
If you take this professor you will regret the day you signed up for this class. She is rude, disrespectful to students and bashes you for having an opinion or asking for feedback. Dr.Elmore does have tendency (most likely from reading these ratings) to demand respect but doesn't give it to you. she does not treat you as an adult she is rude and I believed I flashed back to high school English the 1st class with her. Her grading agreeably ridiculous, but will make you a better writer.Wouldn't take class again.
If you are looking for an easy class that does not require much effort, this is not the class for you. I have learned a great deal about literature as well as myself during this class. Dr. Elmore is straight forward and tries to prepare students for university level classes. She will help, but you have to reach out to her. Not a class for the lazy.

This Teacher is impossible, with a bad attitude! Enough said. She is disrespectful, and unwilling to help when you come to her. I had to finish my statement. A five page paper, checked by the writting center shouldn't recieve an F...I don't give a care who she thinks she is, that's just wrong! Please pick a teacher who wants you to excel in you career field not try to tie you down with what's her passion and not yours. You can make an A with another teacher!
Really not all that great and grades terribly. Wrote some pretty decent essays, even gave them to someone i knew, who is a published author, and they said they were good, yet i receive a C. If youre trying to make an A, dont take this class. She also accusses you of plagiarism even though you didn't even use the internet once while writing the ess

So I decided to take this professor anyway, thinking that all the other commenters were just lazy and that's why they didn't do so well in her class. Boy, I was wrong. I submitted all of my assignments to the writing lab prior to submitting it and I still got a mediocre grade in this course. She is also very rude. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
I'm just going to say this, if you want to sleep at night and if you want to feel secure about your GPA, do not take this class. Regardless of her harsh grading, she's not very put together. She's funny, but she's not on track with her classes. She'd walk in and tell us to prepare for our presentations when she said we'd present next week. Beware.
This was probably one of the worst classes I've taken. I took this course Maymester, bad mistake. Her assignments were ridiculous. LONG ESSAYS due in like a day. Hard grader. Horrible assignments, be prepared to write, read, and breath african american history. the assignments and readings required are totally bias. Run away my friend, run away.
I am working on my bachelors degree and have taken many online courses. This was by far the Worst instructor I have encountered. Offers no real instruction or feedback on grades. If taking online - do not take. Find another option.
She is the worst professor in the dcccd. Heard she is being demoted.
Here's the deal. Her class is essential for preparation to a four year college. She doesn't expect perfect, but she has zero tolerance for slackers. I actually learned how to write in her class, and not only did it lead to higher grades in other classes, now I am inspired to write my own books. English and writing used to be my weak spot until now.
I really enjoyed Dr. Elmore's class. I found her topics refreshing. There is a lot of work and writing involved but its college, so..yea. I didn't find her rude at all; I think she just wants her students to push themselves and their ideas when doing their assignments. Which IS a good thing.

In the beginning seemed like if was going to be a great semester class seemed easy and as time went by she started getting serious, all she talked about is Martin Luther king there is nothing wrong with this but hearing too much of something is annoying. Grades as if she was teaching at Harvard, someone let her know she's never teaching there.
Dr. Elmore is not an easy course. Don't miss her classes, do all of the extra work she assigns, take notes, ask questions before you do the work not after you get a bad grade. She expects you to put a lot of effort into it. Its worth it. After this class essays will be a breeze in anyone else's class. An "A" is possible in this class but not easy.

I did not find the assignments difficult but I wish I knew about this site before I took the course. Her instructions are terribly unclear, her comments are contradictory, and the text book was useless. She told me I should elaborate on a topic in th rough Draft then told me i had to much in the final.
I wish I knew about this site before taking her class! For starters she says,"use of all cap's signals a tone of shouting and/or disrespect" but when she comments on any of your work ITS IN ALL CAPS! Her instructions are NOT clear and she doesn't communicate as a "professor" should.
Her class wasn't particularly hard, but she's not the best professor in the world. She's rude and unhelpful, not to mention the fact that she'll fail you for an assignment even if you get help from her on how it should be written, citing that there wasn't enough emphasis on how you the author felt.

One of the most difficult teachers I've ever had. Good luck trying to communicate with her for any reason. Would never recommend her to anyone.
This class was a big big biggest nightmare ........ She has lot of attitude . I even tried to meet her at school but she never at her office.... She replied emails with very hurtful words... To all, Please please stay away from her.... There are other professors who are very helpful. This class messed up My GPA.
She was the worst professor I've had. I'm decent at English and make about average grades on essays. She gives unclear instructions, offers no help, fail you, and insults you with terrible grammar. I asked her for help and she replied with big, bold red letters and incorrect grammar insulting my intelligence and work ethic. STAY AWAY FROM HER!!
Pretends to care about her students.

Shes messy, disorganized, she loves the power she wields over her students if u catch her in her contradictions shell change what she said online and then say you are crazy and misread! That's verbal and phsychological abuse! I am DISTRAUGHT about the fact that I couldn't find out about this sooner :'( my life is ruined!
I TRIED so haRd! You really have to BEG for help! Like a fish that's on dry land & about to suffocate!! People- if you take this class, you'll spend 50% of your time wondering WTH you're supposed to do & after she grades your paper- next 50% THANKING that school corporal punishment is outlawed..... I wouldn't put it past her if it was still legal.
I thought I was signing up for English but now I realize that this is just a journalism class in disguise. Honestly, we all should compare our grade assignments to check for favoritism and that her grading criteria is consistent (it's not; she takes off 1 point, piss her off, she takes 7). Let's take this teacher up with the board district!
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. I seriously think that she has mental issues or some kind of personality problem.
I really enjoyed her class and felt like it was effective and helped me get to the next level of writing.
She gives you a topic based on a documentary you write your paper in 4 stages. She isn't helpful, when she comments on your paper she contradicts herself all the time. For my paper in the first draft she said something wasn't clear so I cleared it up and then she said it was bad (I cleared it up using the "tools" she gave me).
Dr. Elmore provided the highest level of instruction one could ever hope to encounter. She is demanding and extremely helpful. She expects you to possess a certain level of writing and she challenges you to become better. I am a better writer because of her, and would recommend her to anyone who is interested in elevating their writing skills.
This teacher is not very nice and is very critical. If you are late she will call you out on it and if you are tardy, she will bring it up in class. Do NOT take this Proffessor. She took off of a paper, not because I was illiterate, but because I was late. I never write reviews but I feel so strongly about this one. I repeat, TAKE ANOTHER TEACHER.
She is a tough grader, but a very intelligent woman. She can be rude many time yet funny. During 1301, she was very easy going, but in 1302 she got tough as hell. Also, the 4 minimal papers are tough so it does not help when she says we don't do many papers. Very clear yet difficult at times.
She is very intelligent and is passionate about what she teaches but grades as though you have the same degrees as her. She has no filter. This class is a challenge. There's not a lot of reading but your paper have to be near perfect to get an A.
I took this class as a summer 1 course... let me tell you its not easy. She gave clear instructions and always replied to emails. She is a VERY VERY tough grader. You have 6 assignments that determine your whole grade Taking the class and getting a decent grade isn't impossible, you just turn in perfect papers and be on time. wouldn't recommend.
I took her class this spring and this was the worst class ever in my life. she is not student friendly. It's like she is there, not to teach us but to examine us and grade us only. Didn't get to learn anything new from her. She acts very strict and do not cooperate with students. She gives too much assignments. I don't recommend her. A big NO NO.
If a friend asked me to recommend an English teacher obviously I'd give the best recommendations I can. Well I wouldn't ever recommend this professor to a friend so I wouldn't to everyone on this site either. The only way you can get an A maaay be if you already make your living from writing professionally (yes for elementary 1301.)

Absolutely no learning occurred in Dr. Elmore's class, she had assignments to have students reflect on the history of our writing and had very racially bias assignments assigned to the class. If you have a conservative view point all the sudden your turned in assignments will disappear. I wish I would have read these reviews before enrolling!!!!
she is a good teacher, I enjoyed her. She is strict, if you're a writer, she'll challenge your writing skills. If you want an easy A, don't take her!... Knowledge is a key. Some assignments were a little bias, however It did challenge you from a "normal" classroom and "normal" assignments. you have to show up to class!!!

Dr. Elmore is amazing! Very helpful and simple in grading. The papers and readings are self explanatory. I love that she enjoys teaching and states that "I want to dance at your respective commencement exercises" and is there to assist whenever. Even sent out an email of good readings to help embark on a journey of growth. I would recommend her.

I took Dr. Elmore for a Winter class and it was by far the WORST MISTAKE OF MY ADULT COLLEGIATE LIFE! I've never had any issues writing papers; however, I BARELY passed this class with a C-. She's a TOUGH GRADER, NOT FRIENDLY & is very quick to let you know you're wasting her time if you ask a question SHE FEELS you should know the answer to. RUN!!
I had Phyllis for AP English in HS. Phyllis is a vindictive narcissist who called me (a child at the time) functionally illiterate every day. I went on to get a masters at University of Chicago and edit the MLA handbook she always drones on about. I can't attribute any of my success as a postdoc to her teaching, so definitely skip her class
I had the pleasure of taking Dr. Elmores class many years ago. It was not the class I expected but was so very pleased it wasnt writing about shallow topics (which my next professor wanted ��). She challenges her students to think and treats you like an adult (she wont coddle you). I miss her and the stimulating discussions we used to have.
